This simplification has been based on principles of mechanical equilibrium together with a series of applied filters, which guarantee compliance with these principles and improve the results obtained. This project includes an experimental part carried out in the biomaterials laboratory of the EEBE and a computational part to process the experimental results obtained in the experiments. The experimental part consists of fabricating polyacrylamide gels with fluorescent beads, on which cells are seeded to extract microscopic images before and after cell force relaxation. The computational part consists of writing a MATLAB programme used as an analysis tool. This part accounts for the largest part of the work carried out in this project and presents a new algorithm that, from the traction forces exerted on substrate by a cell, deduces a set of mechanically equilibrated contractile dipoles that best matches the measured traction forces. The resulting network of dipoles, which is obtained through an iterative filtering process, provides information on the plausible cytoskeletal structure compatible with the traction field.

- Abstract
This exploratory and descriptive article diagnoses the general state of teaching and re-search in university master programmes in Spain. Taking this approach as starting point, this study analyzes to what extent the dissertations developed in these master degrees are more research-orien-ted or just produced for professional purposes according to their syllabus and the profile of their teaching staff. To this end, a comprehensive collection of data from the eight universities that offered master programmes in sports journalism between 2017 and 2019 was required. Thus, this study examines the volume, the topics and typologies of dissertations that were defended within those last two academic years. The data collection has been accompanied by questionnaires and inquiries sent to the head professors and supervisors of these degrees. Given that all master programmes on sports journalism except for one are non-official and that a high percentage of their teaching staff work in media outlets, the findings confirm that dissertations are scarcely focused on theories nor research methods, and the addressed issues can hardly open new ways to increase the scientific production in this specific field., Este artículo, de carácter exploratorio y descriptivo, realiza un diagnóstico general sobre el estado de la docencia y la investigación en periodismo deportivo dentro de los másteres de la especialidad que ofertan las universidades españolas.

- Abstract
For the purposes of developing a multi material 3D printer, hybrid to the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and Direct Ink Writing (DIW) technologies, to mimic living tissues, the 3D printing of soft Thermoplastic Polyurethanes (TPU) by DIW is studied to reach a hardness scale so far not crossed with the filament technology. The creation of several pieces through CAD lets a pressurized syringe to be fixed to the printer’s head upon which is also mounted two UV lights to cure the liquid polymer, solidifying on the bed. The soft polyurethanes at the outcome must match their numerical model with the best accuracy since the objective of the main project QuirofAM is to create prototypes of organs to train surgeons to prepare their complex surgical operations. For this matter, the different printing parameters (pressure, extrusion speed, layer thickness or UV light power), specific to each sample, must be identified with precision. Finally, the successful printed TPUs are compared to homologous cast ones by Shore hardness trials and Warner-Bratzler cuttings, as well as organ tissues. The results are various. On the one hand, the printing method can give softer tissues than casting, and getting similar hardness to living tissues is achievable, though it is observed an increasing printing difficulty with softness. On the other hand, the Warner-Bratzler cutting is not conclusive and, at equal hardness, it requires much more force to cut a printed TPU than an organ tissue. Other tests such as Dynamical Mechanical Analysis (DMA) should be conducted in the future to enhance the characterization of the soft polyurethanes., Incoming

TFM (Total Focusing Method) is an advanced post-processing imaging algorithm of ultrasonic array data that shows great potential in defect detection and characterization. This technique can be performed using several propagation modes (direct or over skip imaging) and several types of waves (longitudinal or transverse) allowing the imaging of extended defects of complex geometry. However, non physical indications can be observed, leading to misinterpretation. These imaging artifacts are due to the coexistence of several contributions involving several mode of propagation and interactions with possible defects and / or the geometry of the part. In several configurations, a simple time of flight criterion is not sufficient for their identification. This paper presents tools based on the forward CIVA UT models which allow to analyze and to filter these artifacts, without any tuning parameters. The performances achieved are compared to those of conventional TFM on simulated and experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A simulation suite, cueMAP, has been developed to facilitate the design of inspection processes and sparse 2D array configurations. At the core of cueMAP is a Total Focusing Method (TFM) imaging algorithm that enables computer assisted design of ultrasonic inspection scenarios, including the design of bespoke array configurations to match the inspection criteria. This in-house developed TFM code allows for interactive evaluation of image quality indicators of ultrasonic imaging performance when utilizing a 2D phased array working in FMC/TFM mode. The cueMAP software uses a series of TFM images to build a map of resolution, contrast and sensitivity of imaging performance of a simulated reflector, swept across the inspection volume. The software takes into account probe properties, wedge or water standoff, and effects of specimen curvature. In the validation process of this new software package, two 2D arrays have been evaluated on 304n stainless steel samples, typical of the primary circuit in nuclear plants. Thick section samples have been inspected using a 1MHz 2D matrix array. Due to the processing efficiency of the software, the data collected from these array configurations has been used to investigate the influence sub-aperture operation on inspection performance. Parts with concave surfaces are especially difficult to inspect using ultrasound. This interface distorts the ultrasonic beam leading to image artefacts and poor ultrasound penetration. In this context, the present work demonstrates how to enhance the transmission of ultrasonic waves through concave surfaces. The proposed method consists of a beamforming strategy that compensates the refraction by using sub-apertures to focus on points on the specimen's surface. An aluminum specimen with a sinusoidal concave top surface was analyzed using a 64-element phased array in an immersion tank. On average, the beam computation showed a gain of 12 dB per transmission when the strategy proposed was compared to the Full Matrix Capture (FMC). Also, the Total Focusing Method (TFM) image quality of the proposed emission strategy was verified. The imaging of a side drilled hole (SDH) of 1 mm in diameter presented an improvement of approximately 11 dB in signal-to-noise ratio. Finally, fewer transmission events than the FMC were necessary to achieve a better TFM quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary Cytoskeletal actin dynamics is essential for T cell activation. Here, we show evidence that the binding kinetics of the antigen engaging the T cell receptor influences the nanoscale actin organization and mechanics of the immune synapse. Using an engineered T cell system expressing a specific T cell receptor and stimulated by a range of antigens, we found that the peak force experienced by the T cell receptor during activation was independent of the unbinding kinetics of the stimulating antigen. Conversely, quantification of the actin retrograde flow velocity at the synapse revealed a striking dependence on the antigen unbinding kinetics. These findings suggest that the dynamics of the actin cytoskeleton actively adjusted to normalize the force experienced by the T cell receptor in an antigen-specific manner. Consequently, tuning actin dynamics in response to antigen kinetics may thus be a mechanism that allows T cells to adjust the lengthscale and timescale of T cell receptor signaling., Graphical Abstract, Highlights • Mechanical force experienced by the TCR at the immune synapse is actin dependent • Peak forces experienced by the TCR are independent of the antigen unbinding kinetics • Actin velocity at the immune synapse is dependent on the stimulating antigen, T cell activation relies on a dynamic actin cytoskeleton. Here, Colin-York et al. show how the kinetics of the stimulating antigen influence the dynamics of actin. This feedback mechanism influences the mechanics at the immune synapse, allowing T cells to orchestrate the length scale and timescale of signaling.

• A TFM-DEM hybrid model is developed to study biomass fluidized-bed pyrolysis. • A detailed multi-component and multi-step pyrolysis scheme is also implemented. • Gas-solid flow pattern and bubble characteristics are systematically analyzed. • Biomass conversion behavior and product distributions are examined. • The differences among four operation parameters are highlighted. A hybrid model, which combines two-fluid model with discrete element method as well as a multi-component and multi-step pyrolysis scheme, has been developed to simulate biomass pyrolysis in a fluidized-bed reactor. Gas-solid flow pattern, bubble characteristics, biomass conversion behavior and pyrolysis products are systematically analyzed. Moreover, the differences among four operation parameters are highlighted. Results show that increasing gas velocity and operating pressure or decreasing bed material size reduces solid holdup in central region but increases solid rising and falling velocities. Raising gas velocity elongates the bubbles and improves their rising velocities. Increasing operating temperature or pressure accelerates particle mass loss and shrinkage. Additionally, a higher gas velocity and operating pressure are unfavorable to light gas and tar yields. A higher temperature is beneficial for energy recovery coefficient of light gas, while that of tar achieves its highest values at 773 K. All these observations help understand biomass fluidized-bed pyrolysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electric ship propulsion system has been drawing attention as a solution for savings in energy and maintenance costs. The system is mainly composed of motor, converter and gearbox and required for high torque at low speed. In this situation, transverse flux motors (TFMs) have been proposed to fulfill the low-speed high-torque characteristic due to suitable for short pole pitch and large number of poles to increase torque output. In this trend, we have proposed C-core type motors taking advantage of TFMs’ structure. In this manuscript, a simple design method based on the magnetic-circuit theory and simple modeling of the motor is proposed to search a design parameter for maximizing torque as a pre-process of numerical study. The method takes into consideration the effects of magnetic leakage flux, magnetic saturation and pole-core combination in accordance with the systematic theory. The simple modeling is conducted based on a dense armature structure in previous axial flux motors (AFMs) applied to the new motor design. The validity of the method is verified by 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) and relative error is at most 20%. The minimalist design is shown to be advantageous for effective use in 3-D FEA. As a detailed design by the FEA, high torque density and low cogging to output ratio can be achieved simultaneously in the proposed machine.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Simulations of granular flows in spouted beds are carried out following two main approaches: two-fluid model (TFM) and CFD-DEM coupling (Computational Fluid Dynamics/Discrete Element Method). Moreover, the fluid dynamics of conical spouted beds with 3.20 mm grain sorghum were evaluated through experiments, TFM simulations (2D, and 3D), and CFD-DEM simulations. The gas-solid heat transfer was evaluated by experiments and through CFD-DEM simulations. To determine the input parameters of the CFD-DEM simulations, the direct measurement approach was used. Hence, devices were built to measure the restitution, static friction, and rolling friction coefficients to account for particle-particle and particle-wall interactions. First, the simulations were conducted from operational conditions, and experimental data to validate the model obtained from the literature. Subsequently, an experimental unit was constructed and fluid dynamic and heat transfer tests were performed. The simulations were conducted using the FLUENT® software. The geometries were built in DesignModeler and the computational grids generated in Meshing from the ANSYS® package, student version 19.1. With the experimental devices and employed methodologies, it was possible to obtain the material and interaction properties, which were essential to obtain satisfactory results in the CFD-DEM simulations. The behavior of the spouted bed was predicted with the CFD-DEM coupling, such as the transition stages from static bed to stable spouting conditions. In addition, the fluid dynamic characteristic curve was successfully simulated for both experimental units analyzed. For 2D and 3D TFM simulations, the pressure drop data as a function of air velocity (fluid dynamic characteristic curve) did not show the typical behavior of spouted bed. Through CFD-DEM simulations, the effect of six cone angles (28°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°) on the spouted bed fluid dynamics was also evaluated, in order to determine the configuration that favors the drying process. Smaller cone angles provide better solids circulation with higher mass flow rate, and shorter cycle times. Consistent results were also verified for the heat transfer. After reaching the steady-state, there were no dead zones in the spouted bed, and the particles temperature was homogeneous, which is evidence of the efficient gas-solid contact with this drying equipment. Other tests such as Dynamical Mechanical Analysis (DMA) should be conducted in the future to enhance the characterization of the soft polyurethanes. Incoming

The present study evaluated the risk of 12-h exposures of the lampricide 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM) to multiple life stages of the federally endangered snuffbox ( Epioblasma triquetra) and its primary host fish the common logperch ( Percina caprodes) as well as a surrogate to the snuffbox, the ellipse ( Venustaconcha ellipsiformis). Life stages examined included free glochidia, 1-wk juveniles, and adults of the ellipse; free glochidia, glochidia on host fish, and 1-wk juveniles of the snuffbox; and adult logperch. Larval sea lampreys were also tested alongside adult ellipse and logperch for direct comparison. Survival exceeded 82% among all life stages in both mussel species at levels up to 1.8 times what would be applied during treatments, suggesting that routine sea lamprey control operations would not adversely affect mussels. However, substantial mortality of adult logperch was observed at TFM concentrations typically applied to streams, and loss of host fish could adversely affect snuffbox reproduction. In addition, TFM had no significant effect on the number of glochidia that metamorphosed on adult logperch. Although the snuffbox is not likely to be acutely affected from sea lamprey control operations, mitigation efforts to minimize impacts to the host fish should be considered. The ability of the two fluid method (TFM) to predict the gas-solid flow phenomenon in conical spouted beds operated with high density (6050 kg m−3) particles simulating the nuclear fuel coating conditions is investigated. The effects of geometric and operational factors, such as conical angle and static bed height, are also assessed. The results show that TFM predicts the time-averaged bed pressure drop quite well. The qualitative variation of the particle velocity, solids volume fraction, and axial particle flux with axial height are captured by the simulations. The simulated trends observed in the investigation of the effects of static bed height and conical angle on the particle velocity, solids volume fraction, and axial particle flux agree well with those of the experimental measurements. To reduce the time of recording echo signals by an antenna array that operates in the double-scanning mode, it was proposed to use a set of pseudo-orthogonal coding signals. As the coding signals, it is possible to use frequency-modulated signals or phase-manipulated signals according to the Kasami code by analogy to the FDMA or CDMA techniques for multichannel communication. The use of the maximum-entropy method for decoding echo signals made it possible to reduce the noise level and increase the longitudinal resolution of reflector images in comparison to the case of using matched filtering. If an image is formed as the coherent sum of several partial images that are reconstructed using the C-SAFT method for various positions of the antenna array, it is proposed to use several sets of Kasami codes in order to additionally reduce the noise level by more than 6 dB. Numerical experiments show the efficiency of the proposed approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is proposed to use the inverse C-SAFT (invC-SAFT) method to provide spatial-sensitivity equalization (SSE), which takes not only the delay times of the arrival of echo signals but also their amplitudes and phase nonuniformities into account. The invC-SAFT method reconstructs images of reflectors with a uniform scattering indicatrix in the form of reflections whose amplitudes change within ±2 dB; thus, the invC-SAFT method possesses the property of 'inborn' spatial-sensitivity leveling. Numerical and model experiments at longitudinal and transverse waves confirm the efficiency of the proposed SSE method for nondirectional reflectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The two-fluid model (TFM) coupled with the kinetic theory of granular flow (KTGF) permits detailed simulations of fluidisation at industrial scales in practicable computational time. However, the TFM requires several assumptions regarding the particle-fluid and particle-particle interaction. These models require validation using experimental measurements before the simulations can be used to design industrial fluidised beds. In this paper we present experimental measurements using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and compare these with TFM simulations. However, from these experimental comparisons alone, it is difficult to identify whether errors in the TFM arise from the particle-fluid or particle-particle interaction, or both. We therefore explore the origins of any inaccuracies in TFM simulations of fluidised beds using a recently-developed Discrete Element Model coupled with volume averaged Computational Fluid Dynamics (DEM-CFD). The DEM-CFD model is shown to provide accurate predictions of the time averaged velocity of the particulate phase. A comparison of the TFM and DEM-CFD results demonstrates that modelling the particulate phase using an ideal KTGF does not accurately represent the fluidisation behaviour. These errors are attributed to the lack of rotational friction effects in the KTGF. However, by introducing an apparent coefficient of restitution to account for rotation, TFM simulations of the voidage and time-averaged particle velocity agree with the experimental and DEM-CFD results more closely. - Abstract

- Abstract

The two-fluid model (TFM) has been widely applied in simulation of various multiphase flow systems. In particular, for fine-particle circulating fluidization, the drag force plays a critical role whereas the classic drag models based on empirical correlations of homogeneous fluidization are found inadequate. Therefore, various approaches have been proposed in recent years to account for the effects of meso-scale structure on the drag force, in which the energy-minimization multi-scale model (EMMS) has received rapidly growing applications. However, the relationship between the TFM and EMMS has not been clarified to enable their combination. To solve this problem, we present a structure-dependent analysis of mass, momentum and energy conservation equations. This analysis is rooted in the structure-dependent multi-fluid model (SFM), which details the composition of drag forces and energy consumptions and their relationships with consideration of meso-structures. With assumption of homogeneous structures, it reduces to the TFM equations; for steady-state systems with structures, it restores the force balance equations, equal pressure drop relation and energy relationship of the EMMS. In future, the scale dependence of this analysis deserves more efforts to understand the applicability of the EMMS stability condition on different scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Although the lampricide 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM) has been used for over 60 years to control sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus in the Laurentian Great Lakes, its potential non-lethal impacts on non-target species have not been fully evaluated. We exposed juveniles of two species of fish (lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss) and one adult fish species (fathead minnows Pimephales promelas) to various concentrations of TFM (0.25-7.5 mg/L) in three sets of experiments examining TFM effects on growth, avoidance of TFM treated water, and predation susceptibility. Lake sturgeon and rainbow trout were monitored for two weeks after a 12 hour exposure to TFM to observe differences in instantaneous growth among four treatment levels (0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 mg/L TFM). Growth rates did not differ significantly among control and treated fish of either species. Next, potential avoidance of TFM by rainbow trout was evaluated in a test tank where half the water was contaminated with TFM (0, 0.25, or 2.5 mg/L). No avoidance behavior was observed as rainbow trout spent equal amounts of time in TFM and control water. Finally, fathead minnows were exposed at three different concentrations of TFM (0, 2.5, and 7.5 mg/L) and placed in mesocosms with a non-exposed largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides predator. Two separate trials were performed, both with no significant differences due to treatments. In summary, results indicate that for the conditions tested, TFM has no detectable sub-lethal effects on growth, avoidance behavior, or predation mortality on the fish species tested. - Abstract
Total Focusing Method (TFM) ultrasound imaging has many advantages in terms of flexibility and accuracy in comparison with traditional imaging techniques. However, one major drawback is the high number of data acquisition and computing requirements for this imaging technique. Due to those constraints, the TFM algorithm was earlier classified in the field of post-processing tasks. Real-time imaging is a key aspect in Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) using ultrasound techniques. In this context, fast and precise control evaluation should be implemented on a variety of pieces. This paper describes a dedicated architecture for real-time TFM imaging using the Full Matrix Capture (FMC). In the acquisition process, data are sequentially acquired from phased arrays and temporally stored in order to be processed with synthetic focusing techniques such as the TFM algorithm. The FMC-TFM architecture consists of a set of interconnected functional blocs and integrated in an embedded system. Initially, this acoustic measurement system was dedicated to the parallel data acquisition from phased arrays. The architecture was entirely described using VHDL language, synthesized and implemented on a V5FX70T Xilinx FPGA for the control part and a V5SX95T Xilinx FPGA for the acquisition part. The maximum operating frequency is 147.3 MHz for the control part and 161.3 MHz for the acquisition part. The architecture is able to perform real-time FMC-TFM imaging at a maximum frame rate of 73 frames/s and a maximum resolution of 128×128 pixels, which is sufficient as a performance for a real-time imaging with a good characterization of defects. Time of flight diffraction (TOFD) is considered a reliable non-destructive testing method for the inspection of welds using a pair of single-element probes. On the other hand, ultrasonic phased array imaging has been continuously developed over the last couple of decades, and now features powerful algorithms, such as the total focusing method (TFM) and its multi-view approach to rendering detailed images of inspected parts. This article focuses on a different implementation of the TFM algorithm, relying on the coherent summation of the instantaneous signal phase. This approach presents a wide range of benefits, such as removing the need for calibration, and is highly sensitive to defect tips. This study compares the sizing and localization capabilities of the proposed method with the well-known TOFD. Both instantaneous phase algorithm and TOFD do not take advantage of the signal amplitude. Experimental tests were performed on a ¾, &Prime, thick steel sample with crack-like defects at different angles. Phase-based imaging techniques showed similar characterization capabilities as the standard TOFD method. However, the proposed method adds the benefit of generating an easy-to-interpret image that can help in localizing the defect. These results pave the way for a new characterization approach, especially in the field of automated ultrasonic testing (AUT).

TFM - Abstract

Advances in computational methods have given rise to the study and simulation of different aspects of reactor behavior. As such, topics associated with high computational costs become feasible candidates for further investigation and one of them is reactor space-time kinetics (STK). Until recently, STK simulation and point kinetics approximation were limited to deterministic codes, with Monte Carlo codes being too costly to start with. However, recent developments in this area have allowed the use of certain methods in stochastic codes. One such technique is based on the Transient Fission Matrix (TFM) model, a hybrid method that uses a system response obtained through Monte Carlo and stored in fission and time matrices as input for deterministic calculations. The result enables a view of the STK in terms of neutron propagation probability and propagation time across the system. The TFM method was applied to a simple coupled core configuration to generate a numerical benchmark. The Serpent 2 Monte Carlo code was used for the stochastic part of the calculation. The configuration consists of two fuel assemblies placed in a light water tank, with a water blade of varying width between them. TFM, flux and fission results were obtained for varying water blade widths, ranging between 0 cm and 20 cm. The data is then used to analyze the behavior of the system, as well as the effects of the coupling between the two assemblies. As the assemblies move further apart, the system slowly transitions from two tightly coupled assemblies that essentially form a single core, to two almost independent cores. This study enables to produce a benchmark for future calculations and predefine an innovative way of designing high dominant ratio configurations, required for tackling Monte Carlo residual problems. An actual experimental program could be led in ad hoc zero power reactor (ZPR), such as the KUCA reactor of Kyoto University.

- Abstract
A 5MW direct drive offshore wind turbine generator was designed and simulated using Vector Fields OPERA. This software allows calculation of the flux density, force, torque, and eddy currents in the machine at different rotor positions. Based on the data obtained from the model, initial assumptions could be validated. The selection of the type of generator was based on comparing different types of synchronous generators. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed with respect to the specified requirements, as well as different materials which will define the different parts of the generator. Arguments for the suitable machine are listed and the modelling process presented. The model of the generator is improved by changing designing parameters (position of the magnets or adding additional I-Cores) and analyse the effect of it. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Aimed at improving the imaging performance of the classical total focusing method (TFM), which is an effective post-processing technique for Lamb wave phased array based damage imaging, a waveform correlation factor (WCF) weighted TFM imaging algorithm is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, besides the signal amplitude used in the classical TFM, the waveform correlation coefficients between any two waveforms after dispersion compensation are also utilized for damage imaging. Waveform correlation coefficients will be large if the wave packets are caused by the same imaging point, or they will be small due to the change in waveform shape arising from dispersion. For each imaging point, dispersion compensation for all collected signals is respectively implemented so that the scattering waveforms can be extracted. Then the waveform correlation coefficients between any two scattering waveforms are calculated and weighted on the corresponding amplitude used in the TFM. By comparing the imaging results of the proposed algorithm with that of the classical TFM algorithm, it is found that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the background noise and thus improve the imaging performance. • A new damage imaging algorithm to improve imaging performance of the classical TFM. • Fusion of signal amplitudes and waveform correlation coefficients for imaging. • Remarkable reduction in background noise of imaging results. • Experimental validations using linear and circular arrays.

The possibility for the application of an elastic organosilicon polymer (aquapolymer) as an immersion medium for providing a stable acoustic contact between a tested object with a rough surface and an antenna array in automated ultrasonic testing is considered. If the form of the surface is known, it can be accounted for in the C-SAFT method for the reconstruction of a reflector image using echo signals. A surface profile can be obtained by either direct measurement using a profilometer or by analysis of the reconstructed surface image. An algorithm for processing a surface that was reconstructed using the C-SAFT method is proposed for automatic acquisition of information on the profile of the surface. The operability of the proposed method of reflector-image acquisition with consideration of the rough surface of a tested object is demonstrated in model experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method that is proposed for calibrating an antenna array that is installed on a wedge provides refinement of the coordinates of the centers of piezoelectric elements. Precise knowledge of the coordinates will make it possible to obtain images in which reflections from reflectors will coincide with their actual positions with an accuracy no worse than a half wavelength. The calibration principle involves the minimization of the objective function that describes the difference between the antenna-array-measured echo signals from a 2-mm-diameter side drilled hole (SDH) at a depth of 12 mm and the calculated echo signals from the same hole. The algorithm operation was tested for echo signals calculated in the CIVA program. The calibration results for several antenna arrays on wedges and images of an SDH are presented, which were obtained using the method for digital antenna-array focusing (DAAF) for various acoustic systems. The application of the digital image focusing (DFA) method to the determination of the types of detected reflectors is considered. For this purpose two antenna arrays (AAs) are used, which are placed on opposite sides of the reflector and using which echo signals are recorded in three acoustic channels in the double-scanning mode. The first and second acoustic channels transmit and receive echo signals using the first and second AA, respectively, and the third channel is tuned so that the first AA transmits pulses and the second AA receives echo signals. Using signals in each channel, many partial images can be reconstructed in a common coordinate system according to different acoustic schemes with allowance for both multiple reflections from irregular boundaries of a tested object and effects of transformation of the wave types. Combining partial images makes it possible to obtain a high-quality image, in which the entire boundary of the reflector is seen and using which an attempt to automate the procedure of evaluating the reflector size and determining its type was made. Such an approach allows one to reduce the subjective influence of an operator on the testing results. It is shown that in order to increase the image resolution, the spectrum of echo signals can be extrapolated by the spectrum splitting method jointly with the construction of an AR model of their spectrum. The results of model experiments that confirm the possibility of determining the reflector type are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
