This document is a systematic review titled "Differences in Photoprotective Behaviours Based on Immigration Status." The review examines the variations in photoprotective behaviors, such as sunscreen application and use of sun-protective clothing, between immigrants (naturalized citizens) and nonimmigrants (natural-born citizens). The review includes six studies with a total of 6,658 participants. The findings indicate that naturalized citizens primarily engage in photoprotection through the use of sun-protective accessories, while natural-born citizens primarily rely on sunscreen application. These differences may be influenced by cultural and traditional practices related to sun protection. However, the review acknowledges limitations, such as potential selection bias and the observational nature of the studies, and suggests the need for larger-scale studies. Globally, cutaneous melanoma (CM) incidence is increasing, with sun exposure identified as a key modifiable risk factor. The Atlantic provinces of Canada display varied CM incidence rates: New Brunswick aligns with the national average, while Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island exceed it, and Newfoundland and Labrador fall below this benchmark. We investigated the relationship between sun exposure and CM in these provinces. Twenty-two focus groups encompassing 95 Atlantic Canada residents were conducted and transcribed. A thematic analysis was conducted in MAXQDA using the social–ecological model as a framework. Residents of high-CM incidence provinces demonstrated greater sun exposure awareness, consulting UV indices, and using sunscreen and sun-protective clothing. However, they received greater UV exposure due to warmer climates and outdoor work and cultural activities. Conversely, those in low-incidence provinces used sunscreen and sun-protective clothing less often, engaged in occupations and hobbies affording less sun exposure, and lived in cooler climates. Our data supports a possible “sunscreen paradox”, whereby increased sunscreen use is correlated with augmented sun exposure, leading to a deceptive sense of security. Public health initiatives in Atlantic Canada promoting sun safety must address this paradox while integrating community-specific behaviors and norms in order to develop tailored campaigns.

Background: The incidence of cutaneous melanoma (CM) is increasing at an alarming rate in Canada and elsewhere around the world. Significant regional differences in CM incidence have been identified in Atlantic provinces. The goal of this study is to compare ultraviolet exposure, sun protective behaviours, level of worry and baseline CM knowledge in provinces with a high versus low incidence of CM as well, as between various demographic groups. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted in Atlantic provinces between July 2020 and August 2022. All participants aged ≥ 16 years with a completed survey were eligible. Survey responses were summarized using frequency counts, percentages, and means. Two-sided Z-tests for equality of proportions and logistic regression models were used to compare the survey results between geographic and demographic groups. Results: In total, 7861 participants were included (28.0% men; mean age 61.3 years; response rate 28%). Our results (gender- and age-adjusted odds ratio, 95% confidence interval) show that high-incidence provinces for CM (Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia) had significantly more sunburns (OR 2.00, 1.72–2.31), total sun exposure (OR 2.05, 1.68–2.50), recreational sun exposure (OR 1.95, 1.61–2.35) and tans (OR 1.77, 1.53–2.05) than individuals in low-incidence provinces (Newfoundland and Labrador). However, individuals in high-incidence provinces displayed more protective behaviors: there were less tanning bed users (OR 0.82, 0.71–0.95), they checked their skin more frequently for new moles (OR 1.26, 1.06–1.51) and practiced more sun protection overall. Additional analyses are presented based on education, income, sexual orientation and gender. Discussion: These findings suggest that future efforts aimed at reducing the CM burden in Atlantic Canada should be tailored for target geographic and/or demographic groups. Limitations: the study participants are not representative of the population in Atlantic Canada due to recruitment strategies.

Because YouTube is one of the most popular search engines, it is an instrumental tool to stay up to date on the most relevant dermatology trends and content in order to better direct patients and improve health outcomes. Twelve select terms (i.e. Dermatology, Sun protection, Skin cancer awareness, Skin cancer, Skin condition, Sun safety, Tanning, Melanoma, Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma, Skin cancer treatment, Skin cancer prevention) were searched on YouTube. Overall, the results included 240 videos with over 160 million views. Educational content was most prevalent at 35% of the total search results. Of the total videos, 42% were uploaded by or featured a medical health professional (MD, DO, PhD, RN, ND), with 28% involving a board-certified dermatologist. Trends in content type have changed: educational and personal videos have increased, while advocacy and advertising have decreased. Most search terms are moving in a positive, informative direction, specifically the term "tanning." Other search terms such as "skin condition" and "skin cancer treatment" should be more closely monitored for misleading and perhaps harmful information. Therefore, dermatologists and other medical personnel should keep pace with relevant and popular dermatology content on YouTube in order to understand, advise, market, educate, and address patients' questions and concerns.

Aim: This study was conducted cross-sectional to determine the level of knowledge and behavior of university students about skin cancer and sun protection. Method: The population of the study consisted of 44,763 students studying at a university in 2015-2016. In the sample was used the technique G-power with low effect size (0.10) 95 % power and 80 % confidence and 1634 students joined the research. As a data collection tool; Questionnaire Form, Skin Cancer and Sun Knowledge Scale and Sun Protection Behavior Scale developed by researchers in line with the literature were used. The data of the study was evaluated with the SPSS statistics package program (Version 15.00 Chicago IL, USA) Results: In our study, 74.9% of the students (n=1244) were female and % 25.1(n=410) were male and the mean age was 20.26±2.12. Gender, economic status, educational status of parents, hair color, sun allergy, skin disease, sunspots, having sunburn at any time of life, believing that it can be protected from Skin Cancer and Skin Cancer And Sun İnformation Scale Scores; gender, place of residence and region, economic status, mother and father education level, hair color, number of mole, believing that they can be protected from skin cancer and the Sun Protection Behavior Scale scores were found to be different. Conclusions: According to these results, it was concluded that there was a difference between the personal characteristics of the students and their level of skin cancer, sun knowledge and sun protection.

Abstract Objective: To inform skin cancer prevention policies and campaigns, we investigated changes over time in sun protection behaviours, sunburn, sun exposure and shade availability in public spaces among people living in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, between 2003 and 2016. Methods: We analysed cross‐sectional data from the NSW Population Health Survey collected in 2003, 2007, 2014 and 2016, which included approximately 15,000 respondents of all ages in each year. Logistic regression models were used to analyse overall changes over time and for different age, sex and sociodemographic groups. Results: The use of sunscreen and protective clothing and the availability of shade increased between 2003 and 2016, but sunburn and sun exposure during peak times of ultraviolet radiation also increased. In subgroup analyses, there was no improvement in sun protection behaviours among adolescents and increases in sunburn and sun exposure were observed only among adults, particularly women and in areas with less social disadvantage. Conclusions: Sun protection behaviours have improved over time among some population subgroups, but over‐exposure to ultraviolet radiation remains prevalent. Implications for public health: Skin cancer prevention initiatives that specifically target adolescents and sun exposure during peak times are needed to help reduce population skin cancer risk.

A substantial proportion of all reported occupational illnesses are constituted by skin cancer, making this disease a serious public health issue. Solar ultra-violet radiation (UVR) exposure is the most significant external factor in the development of skin cancer, for which the broad occupational category of outdoor workers has already been identified as high-risk group. Sun protection by deploying adequate technical, organizational, and person-related measures has to be understood as a functional aspect of workplace safety. To prevent skin cancers brought on by—typically cumulative—solar UVR exposure, outdoor workers must considerably lower their occupationally acquired solar UVR doses. Estimating cumulative sun exposure in outdoor workers requires consideration of the level of solar UVR exposure, the tasks to be done in the sun, and the employees' solar UVR preventive measures. Recent studies have highlighted the necessity for measures to enhance outdoor workers' sun protection behavior. In the coming decades, occupational dermatology is expected to pay increasing attention to sun protection at work. Also, the field of dermato-oncology will likely be concerned with sky-rocketing incidences of occupational skin cancers. The complete range of available alternatives should be utilized in terms of preventive actions, which seems pivotal to handle the present and future challenges in a purposeful manner. This will almost definitely only be possible if politicians' support is effectively combined with communal and individual preventive actions in order to spur long-term transformation.

Prevention of skin cancer involves decreasing exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and avoiding sunburn, especially early in life. Individuals living in urban versus rural areas, as defined by the Rural Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) code classification, have different risks for skin cancer, likely due to differing patterns of outdoor activities and preventive behaviors employed when outdoors. However, few studies have examined differences in outdoor activities between rural and urban individuals and examined this among both adults and children. This study compared the outdoor activities, sun protection strategies, tanning behaviors, and sunburn occurrence of adults and children (n = 97 dyads) in rural versus urban settings in a Western region of the United States. The relationships between outdoor activities and sunburn occurrence were examined in both groups. Analyses employed Barnard’s Exact Test and logistic generalized estimating equations models. Individuals in rural and urban areas reported differences in sun protection strategies used, tanning behaviors, and outdoor activities. Individuals in urban areas more commonly reported use of certain forms of sun protection, such as sunscreen and shade, whereas long pants and skirt wearing were more common for children in rural areas. Individuals in rural areas were more likely than those in urban areas to engage in farm work, yard work, and youth sports. Gender differences in these outcomes were also identified. Skin cancer preventive interventions could be tailored for rural and urban families to target sun protection strategies to outdoor activities and to situations in which sunburns are likely to occur.

The objective of the present study was to assess the awareness level of individuals on the use of sunscreen products, and pharmacists' perception of sunscreen safety. A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Participants involved included 224 female undergraduates of Ajman University (aged 18-25 years old), 234 patients visiting numerous pharmacies, and 58 pharmacists from the private sector in Dubai. Questionnaires were designed and distributed to all participants. Data entry and analysis were performed using SPSS (Statistical Program for Social Sciences) version 20. Among female undergraduate students, 94.7% used sun protection, 81.1% understood what is meant by SPF (Sun Protection Factor) Value, and 70.2% used the optimal SPF (15-20). Additionally, 95.2% reported that sunscreens do not have any side effects. Out of the 234 patients who participated in the study, 86.8% used sun protection, 56.8% understood what is meant by SPF, and 43.2% used the optimal SPF. Furthermore, 93.2% stated that sunscreens do not have any side effects. Female patients were found to use sunscreens with higher SPF values (above 50) as compared to male patients (P ≤ 0.024). Patients above the age of 40 also used sunscreens with high SPF (P ≤ 0.001). As for pharmacists, they all agreed that sunscreens have a marked safety profile, with no side effects, and that the optimal SPF for use is 15-20. Most pharmacists (80%) reported that consumers are in fact aware and knowledgeable about the proper use and application of sunscreens. Background: Biases inherent in self‐assessment of sun exposure and sun‐safe behavior may lead to inaccurate conclusions about the effectiveness of sun‐safety educational programs. Objectives: We aimed to compare self‐reports to objective measures of sun exposure, when examining the effectiveness of passive versus active educational interventions. Methods: From May to June 2018, 73 participants recruited at a dermatology clinic were sequentially assigned to receive sun‐safety education through one of 3 modes: interactive online module, video, or no education. A baseline Sun Exposure and Behavior Inventory (SEBI) questionnaire was administered, and spectrophotometric measurements of sun‐exposed and sun‐protected areas were taken and reported in the CIE L*a*b* color space. Participants were followed 4–8 and 16 weeks after the initial visit where the SEBI was re‐administered, and serial measurements of skin color were taken. The change in SEBI scores and L*a*b values, as calculated by the individual typology angle (ITA°), was analyzed. Results: There was a significant increase in skin darkening in all the groups at 4–8 and 16 weeks follow‐up. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in the magnitude of color change. However, subjectively at 4‐8 weeks post‐intervention, participants in the interactive module and video groups had significantly improved self‐reported SEBI scores compared to control (p <.05, Kruskal‐Wallis). By 16 weeks, only the interactive module group showed significant improvement in SEBI scores compared to control (p <.05, ANOVA). Conclusion: In determining the effectiveness of sun‐safety programs, spectrophotometric evaluation of sun‐induced skin pigmentation can allow for a more complete evaluation of self‐reported sun exposure and sun‐protective behavior. Introduction: Public health awareness on sun-protection practices especially sunscreen use is established in developed countries compared with some other tropical African countries. Open-market traders in Nigeria, who typically have black skin, spend up to 8 hours in daylight with unprotected sun exposure. Aim: To determine prevalence of the knowledge of sunscreen use and to discover if adequate and appropriate sunscreen use is practiced by market traders. Methods: Cross-sectional study on 307 consenting traders at Sandgrouse Market in Lagos, Nigeria. Demographic data and responses to questions on sun exposure and its effects, knowledge and use of sunscreen, source of knowledge, and frequency of application were documented with a predesigned study questionnaire. Data were analyzed with SPSS 22. Results: More females (207; 67.4%) were observed and the mean age was 42.7 ± 12.8 years, though most were within the 35- to 39-year age range. One-third (102; 33.2%) were unaware that sun exposure could damage the skin and only 30 (9.8%) were aware of or knew what sunscreen meant. Commercials or advertisements were the most common source of knowledge and females were significantly more aware of sunscreens (P= 0.018). Conclusion: There is poor knowledge and awareness of the use of sunscreen among urban market traders in Nigeria who have prolonged unprotected exposure during their daily activities. Background: Melanoma is the second most common cancer in young adults. Social media may be a means to conduct interventions to increase sun safety in young adults.Purpose: We conducted a randomized proof-of-concept pilot trial to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a dissonance-based social media intervention designed to promote sun safety in young adult tanners.Methods: Young adult tanners (N = 66) were randomized into two 4-week interventions in which participants were incentivized to create content for a social media campaign on healthy skin or healthy lifestyle. Feasibility outcomes included retention, participation, acceptability, and contamination. We also examined the impact of participation on motivation to engage in the target health behaviors and outdoor tanning intentions.Results: Retention was 100%. Most Healthy Skin (88%) and Healthy Lifestyle participants (91%) created ≥1 post. Acceptability was high with 94% and 97% of participants in Healthy Skin and Healthy Lifestyle conditions, respectively, agreeing they would recommend the campaign to a friend. At 4 weeks, Healthy Skin participants reported greater declines in motivation to tan indoors (p = .0017) and outdoors (p = .0003), and greater increases in motivation to wear sunscreen (p = .0009) and protective clothing (p = .0342). Healthy Skin participants reported greater declines in intentions to tan outdoors in the next year (p = .0286).Conclusions: A dissonance-based, social media sun safety intervention was feasible and acceptable. Background: Identifying the characteristics of persons who benefit more from behavioral interventions can help health care providers decide which individuals should be offered particular interventions because this is the subgroup of persons who are more likely to derive greater benefit from the intervention and refine the underlying constructs of the model guiding the intervention.Purpose: This study evaluated possible demographic, medical, knowledge and attitudinal, and psychosocial variables that may moderate the impact of an online intervention, called mySmartSkin (MSS), on engagement in skin self-examination (SSE) and sun protection behaviors among melanoma survivors.Methods: Participants completed a baseline survey and were then randomized to the MSS condition or usual care. Follow-up surveys were completed by participants at 8-, 24-, and 48-week postrandomization.Results: A greater impact of MSS on SSE was illustrated among participants with more phenotypic skin cancer risk factors and participants reporting lower baseline self-efficacy in conducting SSE. A more favorable response of MSS on sun protection behaviors was shown when initial knowledge about abnormal lesions and sun protection barriers were high. Greater use of MSS and more favorable evaluations of it were also associated with higher intervention response.Conclusions: Future studies seeking to improve SSE and sun protection among melanoma survivors might benefit from focusing on survivors who report more skin cancer risk factors, lower self-efficacy in conducting SSE, less knowledge about what abnormal skin lesions look like, more perceived barriers to sun protection behaviors, and less worry about recurrence and cancer-related distress. Background: In the past 2 decades, melanoma incidence among Hispanic individuals has risen by 20%. The mortality rate of Hispanic individuals is higher than that for non-Hispanic White individuals. Skin cancer can largely be prevented with regular sun protection, and skin cancer outcomes can be improved through early detection, for example, by skin self-examination. Alarmingly, Hispanic individuals are less aware of the symptoms and harms of skin cancers, tend to have misperceptions regarding the risks and benefits of skin cancer prevention behaviors, and engage in less sun protection behaviors than non-Hispanic White individuals., Objective: This study aimed to use a community-engaged approach and conduct both group and individual interviews among Hispanic individuals and relevant key stakeholders to explore the potential design of a mobile-based skin cancer prevention intervention for Hispanic individuals., Methods: This study used a qualitative design (focus groups and individual interviews). Participants were recruited from local community organizations' social media, local events, and contact lists (eg, email). Zoom interviews were conducted to examine whether Hispanic individuals would be interested in a mobile-based skin cancer intervention and to explore their preferences and suggestions to inform skin cancer prevention intervention design., Results: Five focus groups (2 in Spanish and 3 in English) among self-identified Hispanic individuals (n=34) and 15 semistructured, in-depth individual interviews among key stakeholders (health care providers and community leaders; eg, dermatologist, nurse practitioner, licensed social worker, and church leader) were conducted. The main themes and subthemes emerging from the group discussions and individual interviews were organized into the following categories: intervention platform, delivery frequency and format, message design, engagement plan, and activities. WhatsApp and Facebook were identified as suitable platforms for the intervention. Messages including short videos, visuals (eg, images and photographs), and simple texts messages were preferred. Recommendations for message design included personalized messages, personal stories and narratives, culturally relevant design (eg, incorporating family values), and community-trusted sources. Potential engagement and retention recommendations were also discussed. Additional details and exemplar quotes of each theme and subtheme are described., Conclusions: This study provides important insights and directions for the design of a mobile, digital skin cancer intervention to modify Hispanic individuals' sun protection and skin self-examination behaviors to help improve skin cancer outcomes. Insights gathered from community leaders and health care providers provided valuable additions to the community-derived data. Leveraging popular digital platforms among Hispanic individuals such as WhatsApp or Facebook could be a promising approach to skin cancer prevention. Background: Young adults engage in behaviors that place them at risk for skin cancer. Dissemination of digital health promotion interventions via social media is a potentially promising strategy to modify skin cancer risk behaviors by increasing UV radiation (UVR) protection and skin cancer examinations., Objective: This study aimed to compare 3 digital interventions designed to modify UVR exposure, sun protection, and skin cancer detection behaviors among young adults at moderate to high risk of skin cancer., Methods: This study was a hybrid type II effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial of 2 active interventions, a digital skin cancer risk reduction intervention (UV4.me [basic]) compared with an enhanced version (UV4.me2 [enhanced]), and an electronic pamphlet (e-pamphlet). Intervention effects were assessed over the course of a year among 1369 US young adults recruited primarily via Facebook and Instagram. Enhancements to encourage intervention engagement and behavior change included more comprehensive goal-setting activities, ongoing proactive messaging related to previously established mediators (eg, self-efficacy) of UVR exposure and protection, embedded incentives for module completion, and ongoing news and video updates. Primary outcome effects assessed via linear regression were UVR exposure and sun protection and protection habits. Secondary outcome effects assessed via logistic regression were skin self-exams, physician skin exams, sunscreen use, indoor tanning, and sunburn., Results: The active interventions increased sun protection (basic: P=.02; enhanced: P<.001) and habitual sun protection (basic: P=.04; enhanced P=.01) compared with the e-pamphlet. The enhanced intervention increased sun protection more than the basic one. Each active intervention increased sunscreen use at the 3-month follow-up (basic: P=.03; enhanced: P=.01) and skin self-exam at 1 year (basic: P=.04; enhanced: P=.004), compared with the e-pamphlet. Other intervention effects and differences between the Basic and Enhanced Intervention effects were nonsignificant., Conclusions: The active interventions were effective in improving several skin cancer risk and skin cancer prevention behaviors. Compared with the basic intervention, the enhanced intervention added to the improvement in sun protection but not other behaviors. We assessed outplanting performance of N. glauca in two trials. In Trial 1, provenances from Pre- Andean (Linares, Longaví) and Coastal (Curanipe, Empedrado) origins were planted in a common garden under two sun protection treatments (i.e., black mesh shelter, and kaolin at 6% concentration), and a control treatment at full sun. In Trial 2, a local provenance was established under two site preparation treatments (i.e., old subsoiling from 4 years ago versus no-subsoiling). Growth, survival, gas exchange, and Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured one year after outplanting. In Trial 1 survival was similar among treatments but larger seedlings were found under kaolin and in the local provenance Empedrado. The provenances varied by sun protection treatment in survival, and the Pre Andean provenance Linares tended to show the lowest survival at full sun. At the leaf-level physiology, provenances responded similarly in gas exchange and fluorescence parameters. In the sun protection treatments seedlings under kaolin increased stomatal conductance and electron transport, but decreased photosynthesis, water use efficiency, and efficiency of PSII. Provenances also varied by treatment in physiology. The Empedrado provenance exhibited the highest transpiration and stomatal conductance under kaolin whereas the Pre Andean provenance of Longaví showed the lowest photosynthesis and efficiency of PSII in the kaolin treatment. In Trial 2, root collar diameter, intercellular CO2 and water use efficiency were higher in the old-subsoiling treatment. As a potential adaptation tool, seed sources from Pre Andean origins can be established in Coastal origins with no detriments on seedling survival.

The sale of sunscreen products is lucrative for pharmacies, and many people buy sunscreen in pharmacies because they expect to receive good advice on sunscreen use and sun protection. However, little is known about the knowledge level of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the field of skin cancer prevention. By conducting a qualitative study in Germany, we aimed to explore what pharmacy personnel know about sun protection and the proper use of sunscreens, where they get their information from, and where they see deficits concerning these topics. We found that there is a need for education regarding the terms skin type and sun protection factor, both of which can be helpful tools when advising customers on sun protection. In addition, participants wished for more independent information from health authorities because sunscreen manufacturing companies, which offer product-specific information, are often the only source of information. Overall, it seems reasonable that pharmacy staff should be educated more about sun protection behavior and the proper use of sunscreen to be able to advise their customers correctly. Our findings offer a starting point for strengthening the role of pharmacies in skin cancer prevention. It seems to make sense to develop and offer tailored handouts for customer counseling. Since sunscreen products are perceived as seasonal products, an educational leaflet can help refresh knowledge about the use of sunscreen and the concepts of skin type and sun protection factor in early summer.

Skin cancers are the most common malignancy in Australia. Regular sunscreen use can reduce the incidence of cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas and actinic keratoses and has been associated with reducing the incidence of basal cell carcinomas and melanomas. However, sunscreen effectiveness is limited by the failure of the population to use it routinely. Interventions that promote the daily application of sunscreen may reduce the morbidity, mortality, and economic burden associated with skin malignancies. We reviewed the literature that examines the effectiveness of interventions to increase routine sunscreen use and found that no one strategy has been shown to be clearly effective in adults and that relatively few studies have aimed to increase routine use in groups at extreme skin cancer risk. Future research should consider how interventions can be best designed and how sunscreen use is measured so that cost-effective, feasible strategies that result in improved sunscreen use in adults can be established. Background: Adequate sun safety during childhood is crucial for decreasing skin cancer risk in later life. Although parents are an essential target group in applying sun protection measures for their children, insight into the determinants associated with their sun protection behaviors is limited. Aims: This study aims to identify the most relevant determinants in predicting multiple parental sun protection intentions and behaviors in different sun exposure situations. Method: A longitudinal survey study with two measurements was conducted among Dutch parents (N = 670) of children (4–12 years old). Twenty-seven sociocognitive determinants were examined in terms of relevance regarding four parental sun protection behaviors in different sun exposure situations. The Confidence Interval-Based Estimation of Relevance approach was used to visualize room for improvement (sample means) on all determinants and their association strengths (correlations) with sun protection intentions and behaviors. Results: Behavior-specific rather than generic determinants were most relevant in explaining all sun protection behaviors. Of these determinants, attitude, self-efficacy and action planning, and especially parental feelings of difficulty in performing sun protection behaviors, were most relevant. Altogether, the explained variance of all sociocognitive determinants was highest for shade-seeking behavior (R 2 =.41 and.43) and lowest for supportive behavior (R 2 =.19 and.29) in both planned and incidental sun exposure situations, respectively. Discussion: This study provides detailed insight into relevant sociocognitive determinants of parental sun protection behaviors in various sun exposure situations and directions for composing parental skin cancer prevention interventions. Conclusions: Future composition of sun safety interventions should emphasize on enhancing parental feelings of self-efficacy, especially for shade-seeking and clothing behaviors. Sun exposure in childhood is a major risk factor for the development of skin cancer as an adult. School children spend much of their time outdoors exposed to ultraviolet radiation during recreational and sports activities. Skin cancer incidence tripled from 1978 to 2002 in Spain. Andalusia, the largest and sunniest region of Spain, lacks data on the sun protection measures taken in schools. To address this deficit, the aim of this study was to determine photoprotection practices and policies in preschools and primary schools in Andalusia. This descriptive study involved the administration of an online questionnaire completed by principals regarding school sun protection policies and practices. Preschool and primary schools were selected from the database of the Ministry of Education of the Andalusian Regional Government. Information of interest included photoprotection policies, students' sun protection knowledge, sun protection measures, relevant curricular content, and availability of shade at the school. A total of 2425 schools were contacted. Of them, 420 schools responded (17.31%), with the highest number of responses received from Malaga (23.8%) and Seville (19.5%) provinces. Of those responding, 67.1% of the schools did not have written sun protection policies. The photoprotection measures reported included mandatory use of a cap or hat (3.3%), use of sunglasses in outdoor areas (30%), and active encouragement of students to use sunscreen (50.7%). Roughly 24% of schools evaluated their shaded areas, with 52.9% reporting insufficient protection for most activities. The study results showed that photoprotection policies and practices in Andalusian schools were mostly insufficient. Given that skin cancer incidence has increased considerably over the last decade, it is important to concentrate on improving primary prevention practices. Additionally, photoprotection programs in schools have been shown to improve children's knowledge, attitudes, and habits regarding photoprotection. Kitesurfing is one of many water sports that are growing in popularity throughout the world. In such sports, practitioners are exposed not only to direct sunlight but also to reflection from the water surface, which aggravates the impact of solar radiation on the skin. This study sought to analyse the photoprotection and photoexposure habits and knowledge of elite kitesurfers and their beliefs and attitudes in this respect. A sample of convenience of 72 male kitesurfers completed a validated questionnaire in full. By Fitzpatrick phototype, the most common classes were types I and II (69.4%). On average, kitesurfers had been practising their sport for 10.93 years, at a rate of 13.93 h per week. During the last sports season, 84.7% of respondents had suffered at least one sunburn, while 43.1% had been sunburned at least three times. The sun protection practice most commonly adopted was the use of sunscreen cream, which was used by 79.2% of respondents. Although 43.2% of respondents recognized to be worried about they might get skin cancer from the sun, 31.9% does not like using sunscreen and 44.4% like sunbathing. Regarding the respondents' knowledge of facts about sun exposure, the average rate of correct answers for the items evaluated was 66.9%. In conclusion, elite kitesurfers are potentially exposed to dangerous levels of UV radiation, which caused numerous sunburn episodes during the last sports season. It is necessary to raise these athletes' awareness of their risk of developing skin cancer and of the need to improve their sun protection and skin surveillance practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Background: Sunscreens are widely used to protect the skin against the harmful effects of solar radiation. It is not known whether solar protection factor of a sunscreen is altered by the concomitant use of other cosmetic products. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze changes in the protective effect of different commercial and ISO standards sunscreens with high SPF applied shortly before and after application of non‐sunscreens galenic formulas type moisturizing creams. Methods: ISO 24444:2019 standard sunscreens, which claimed SPF 16 and 63, as well as 4 different claimed SPF 50 and 50+ commercial sunscreens were prepared and applied in different sequential order to the back of 25 volunteers and compared with different commercial moisturizing formulas. Ultraviolet (UV) reflectance photography followed by image analysis was used to compare untreated skin and skin treated with moisturizing creams alone and combined with sunscreens. Results: The UV reflectance analysis showed no significant changes of the skin color reflectance treated with moisturizing cream compared with untreated skin. Application of the sunscreen formulations were associated with a 35% ‐ 70% decrease in color related to the in vivo expected SPF, indicating significant UV absorption for all sunscreen formulas. All standard and commercial sunscreens showed no significant differences in UV reflection color level when combined with the different moisturizing creams applied before or after the sunscreen. Conclusions: Effectiveness of low‐ and high‐protection sunscreens were not altered by the concomitant use of a moisturizing creams applied shortly before and after the sunscreens. Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is genetic autosomal recessive disorder with photosensitivity on exposure to sun and also presents with various malignancies such as squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. A 22-year-old female visited our outpatient clinic with 18 months history of pigmented nodule on her nose. She was diagnosed with XP since she was 2 years old. Physical examination revealed a waxy, blackish-brown nodule on her nose. Incisional biopsy was performed. The histological findings revealed multiple, palisaded basophilic tumor masses surrounded by prominent infiltrating lymphocytes confirming our clinical diagnosis. She was advised sun protection with the use of protective clothing and glasses. XP leads to chances of various malignancies. Early diagnosis, proper clinical examination, histopathological examination for the diagnosis of condition is must to come to proper diagnosis. This research aims to develop eye cosmeceutical formulations with roasted coffee oil. Oil is used in form and microencapsulated forms. A preliminary stability study is performed, and base formulation (BF) is used for comparison. All formulations are stable and firm. Formulations with oil in free (OF) or microencapsulated (MOF) form show color and aroma of coffee. Initially, MOF is the most acid, and BF shows the highest peroxide value (PV) and the lowest sun protection factor (SPF) values and no antioxidant activity (AA). OF and MOF show AA and high SPF ; these parameters are little affected by storage, and an increase in PV is observed only for BF. Cosmeceutical formulations with roasted coffee oil present stability and good potential for dermocosmetic products. Practical Applications: Coffee oil is known for its AA and protection against sunlight UV radiation, so it fits the interest of cosmetics and personal care producers for bioactive ingredients from natural sources. The cosmetics industry uses green coffee oil; however, roasted coffee oil is of more interest since it is a coproduct of the soluble coffee industry. Abstract Background Rural populations in Uganda rely heavily on medicinal plants for the treatment of bacterial skin infections. However, the efficacy of these medicinal plants for their pharmacological action is not known. The study aimed at evaluating the antibacterial, antioxidant, and sun protection potential of Spermacoce princeae, Psorospermum febrifugum, Plectranthus caespitosus, and Erlangea tomentosa extracts. Methods The plant samples were extracted by maceration sequentially using hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and distilled water. Antibacterial activity of each extract was carried out using an agar well diffusion assay against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonie, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Salmonella typhi. Acute dermal toxicity of the aqueous extract of S. princeae and P. febrifugum, and E. tomentosa was assessed in young adult healthy Wistar albino rats at a dose of 8000 and 10,000 mg/kg body weight. The antioxidant activity of each extract was carried out using a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. The sun protection factor was determined using Shimadzu UltraViolet-Visible double beam spectrophotometer between 290 and 320 nm. Results The plant extracts showed good antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial strains with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging between 3.12 and 12.5 mg/ml. There was no significant change in the levels of creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase in the rats even at a higher dose of 10,000 mg/kg, which was related to the results of biochemical analysis of the blood samples from the treated and control groups. The aqueous and methanol extracts of S. princeae showed potential antioxidant properties, with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 59.82 and 61.20 μg/ml respectively. The organic and aqueous extracts of P. caespitosus showed high levels of protection against Ultraviolet light with sun protection potential values ranging between 30.67 and 37.84. Conclusions The study demonstrated that the selected medicinal plants possessed good antibacterial, antioxidant, and sun protection properties. Therefore, the plants are alternative sources of antibacterial, antioxidant, and sun protection agents in managing bacterial skin infections.

Abstract Background Rates of skin cancer in Australia are amongst the highest in the world, with Western New South Wales (NSW) exhibiting very high prevalence. There is a large proportion of outdoor workers, including farmers, in Western NSW who have high levels of sun exposure and hence are at greater risk of developing skin cancer. Aims To characterise the current sun safety practices of farmers in Western NSW and explore their knowledge, attitudes and perceived barriers towards sun safety and its implementation. Methods A cross-sectional survey study was conducted using a self-directed questionnaire. Participants were recruited at field days held in Western NSW and through surveys distributed at general practices, local stores and online. Eligibility criteria were aged 18 years and over and currently working on a farm in the study region. Results Of the 144 participants, 89 (61.8%) were male with a mean age of 49 years. Knowledge of sun safety was relatively high with most questions answered correctly by greater than 80% of participants. Risk of developing skin cancer was underestimated in 58 (40.3%) participants. Of all participants, 89 (62.2%) identified one or more barriers to practicing sun safety. The most common barrier was forgetfulness in 62 (43.4%) participants. The identification of barriers was significantly associated with reduced engagement of sun safety practices (p = 0.009). Conclusions Knowledge of sun safety among farmers was high. There was, however, underestimation of risk of developing skin cancer. Addressing perceived barriers to implementing sun safety could improve sun safety practices in this cohort.

Öz Background: It is important to identify the risks that may cause skin cancer development in adolescents and the factors affecting sun protection behaviors. Objectives: This study was carried out in a descriptive and cross-sectional design to determine the effect of high school students’ self-efficacy and perceptions for sun protection on their sun protection behaviors. Methods: The study was conducted from February to April 2019 with 846 students from two high schools in Turkey. The data of the study were collected using a personal information form, the Sun Protection Behavior Scale (SPBS), the Decisional Balance Scale (DBS) for Sun Protection, and the Self-Efficacy Scale for Sun Protection (SES). The data were analyzed through SPSS and AMOS software packages using Pearson’s correlation analysis, the linear regression analysis, and the structural equation model. Results: In the multiple regression analysis, a model was created according to the relationship between the variables. In the model, high school students’ self-efficacy and perceptions for sun protection explained 33.6% of their sun protection behaviors. It was found that all the factors except for DBS cons perception (p> .05) had a statistically significant effect on students’ sun protection behavior. According to the structural equation model, the fit indices of the model were found to be greater than .91. Conclusion: As adolescents’ self-efficacy levels and perceptions of the pros and cons increase, their likelihood of exhibiting sun protection behaviors increases as well. In adolescent training, it is important to design and disseminate educational programs consisting of interventions that will increase adolescents’ self-efficacy and perceptions of decision-making.

Although social media ubiquitously supplementstraditional information sources such as newspapers,magazines, radio, and television, investigation of onlinehealth information related to sun protection and skincancer prevention has been scarce and largely limitedto English language sources. Using the search terms“sun protection,” “sunscreen,” “skin cancer prevention,”“tanning bed” and “vitamin D,” we investigated 281YouTube videos presented in 6 languages: English,German, French, Spanish, Swedish, and Danish. Foreach video, we used a four-sectioned checklist toassess general information, popularity, expert drivenmeasures, and heuristic driven measures. Differencesbetween languages were detected: English languagevideos were most frequently viewed (median numberof views: 5488 compared to 248 -1591 in otherlanguages). Approximately 60% of videos revealednegative effects of solar ultraviolet (UV)-exposure.The majority of videos (75%) targeted adults. Videoson tanning beds and sunscreen contained false ormisleading information 40% and 20% of the time,respectively. We confirm observations made withrespect to other medical disciplines that the generalquality of YouTube contributions is often inferiorand does not deliver sustainable information. Othersources of information should be included whensearching for health information online.

We establish a strong, positive relationship between the Ultraviolet Index and Google search engine activity for sunburn-related terms in the United States. Using the Google Trends utility and data available from the National Weather service, we combine data from a twelve-year period to produce panel data for each state. We fit a time-series regression model of search activity and perform statistical tests on the resulting parameter estimates. This study lays the groundwork for using search-related data to assess the prevalence of, and attitudes about sunburn. By tracking the frequency of searches about preventative measures like “sunscreen” or “protective clothing” versus treatment measures like “sunburn relief,” researchers could measure the effectiveness of awareness and prevention programs.

The skin cancer incidence rate has been rising, and digital health interventions can promote skin cancer prevention and detection behaviors. A systematic review was conducted to investigate the outcomes of digital interventions that promote sun protection and skin self-examination (SSE). This review examined studies that utilized randomized controlled designs or quasi-experiments, included outcomes related to sun safety or SSE, employed at least one digital platform, and were published in English from January 2000 to October 2020. A total of 62 studies were included in the review. Digital modalities included web-based (e.g., websites) alone (n = 29), mobile-based (e.g., mobile apps) alone (n = 12), game-based (n = 1), emails or text messages alone (n = 8), videos alone (n = 6), social media (n = 3), both text messages and mobile apps (n = 2), or both text messages and video (n = 1). Most studies (n = 44) only evaluated sun protection-related outcomes, seven studies assessed SSE outcomes only, nine studies examined both, and two assessed other related outcomes. Digital interventions are effective compared to non-intervention control conditions in promoting sun safety or SSE. Almost all studies found digital interventions to be equally or more effective compared to non-digital interventions. This review suggests that although the digital interventions varied, they showed promising effects on improving sun protection or SSE outcomes. Future research should include more sophisticated phase-based and rigorous longitudinal research designs, additional investigation of social media and other newer technologies, as well as more detailed reporting of methods and results.

Background and Design: Melanoma is a serious type of cancer. Patients previously diagnosed with melanoma are at an increased risk of a second melanoma. Therefore, it is important to know and apply preventive measures. This study aimed to examine melanoma patients’ behaviors of sun protection and skin self-examination (SSE), knowledge on risk factors, and communication with their physicians about the disease. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 65 melanoma patients to assess knowledge of melanoma and sun protection and determine SSE attitudes and patient-physician communication. Results: Sun exposure was a well-known melanoma risk factor (67.7%), but the knowledge level on other risk factors, especially regarding skin, hair, and eye color phenotypes, was low (between, 21.5% and 36.9%). Sunscreen use practice was insufficient (33.8%) and mostly inadequate. The most commonly reported reason for not using sunscreen was not having a habit of sunscreen use (83.7%). Compliance with other sun protection behaviors was variable. Half (50.8%) of the melanoma patients reported that they perform SSE. The most commonly reported reasons for not performing SSE was not knowing its necessity (71.8%). More than one-third (35%) of patients stated that they did not receive information about melanoma from their physicians. Almost all patients who received information from their physicians were informed verbally, and only 4% received written information. Conclusion: Our study highlights the need for a comprehensive education for patients about all aspects of melanoma and strategies to improve patient-physician communication. Barriers to preventive behaviors in melanoma patients may be determined in more detail in larger future studies and the content of education may be planned accordingly.

Resumen: Antecedentes y objetivos: El cáncer cutáneo está aumentando su incidencia de forma alarmante en nuestra sociedad, debido a la sobreexposición a la radiación ultravioleta solar (RUV), ya sea por motivos laborales o por ocio.El objetivo del presente estudio es valorar los conocimientos, actitudes y hábitos sobre la exposición solar y la fotoprotección en corredores participantes en una ultramaratón de montaña, así como estimar los factores de riesgo para sufrir quemadura solar. Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal, prospectivo descriptivo a los participantes de la «Gran Trail Aneto-Posets» (GTTAP). Se evaluaron las características sociodemográficas, la experiencia como corredor, la historia de quemadura solar en el verano previo y los hábitos y prácticas de exposición solar mediante una encuesta validada. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo, bivariado y multivariante, tomando como variable principal de resultado la presencia de quemadura solar, estableciendo un nivel de significación en p < 0,05. Resultados: Se incluyeron 657 corredores, 72,1% fueron hombres, con una media de edad de 39,71 años. El 45,1% de los encuestados reconocían haberse quemado en el último año. Las gafas fue el método fotoprotector más utilizado (74,7%), seguido del fotoprotector (factor de protección solar [FPS] > 15) (61,9%), el gorro/a (52,2%), y por último, la ropa (7,4%). Mientras que tener menos edad, fototipo bajo (I y II), correr durante tres o más horas al día y resguardarse a la sombra como medida de fotoprotección se comportaron como factores de riesgo para haber sufrido quemadura solar; las actitudes favorables al uso de cremas y a la búsqueda de la sombra al mediodía, en vez de estar al sol, se comportaron como factores protectores (p < 0,001). Conclusión: La incidencia de quemaduras solares es alta entre los corredores de trails de larga distancia en montaña, pese a que sus conocimientos y hábitos parecen adecuados. Se necesita diseñar estrategias para mejorar los hábitos de fotoprotección adaptados a su práctica deportiva. Abstract: Background and objectives: The incidence of skin cancer in our society is growing at an alarming rate due to overexposure to solar UV radiation in recreational and occupational settings. The aim of this study was to evaluate sun exposure and protection attitudes, behaviors, and knowledge among mountain ultramarathon runners and to assess risk factors for sunburn in this population. Material and methods: Cross-sectional survey of runners who participated in the «Gran Trail Aneto-Posets» race in Aragon, Spain. Using a validated questionnaire, we collected data on sociodemographic characteristics, running experience, sunburn in the previous summer, and sun exposure and protection behaviors. We calculated descriptive statistics and performed bivariate and multivariate analyses of associations using history of sunburn as the primary outcome. Statistical significance was set at a p level of less than 0.05. Results: We surveyed 657 runners (72.1% men) with a mean age of 39.71 years; 45.1% reported sunburn in the past year. The most common protective measures used were sunglasses (74.7%), sunscreen (sun protection factor ≥ 15) (61.9%), a hat (52.2%), and other protective clothing (7.4%). Risk factors for sunburn were younger age, low Fitzpatrick skin type (I and II), running for three or more hours a day, and staying in the shade as a protective measure. By contrast, protective factors were use of sunscreen and seeking shade rather than sun at midday (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Sunburn is common among long-distance mountain runners, despite what appears to be adequate sun protection knowledge and behaviors. Targeted strategies are needed to improve sun protection behaviors among mountain runners.

Numerous pigmented moles are associated with sun exposure and melanomarisk. This cluster randomized controlled trial aimed to determine if sun-protective clothing could prevent a significant proportion of the moles developing in young children (ACTRN12617000621314; Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry. Twenty-five childcare centers in Townsville (19.25° S), Australia, were matched on shade provision and socioeconomic status. One center from each pair was randomized to the intervention arm and the other to the control arm. Children at 13 intervention centers wore study garments and legionnaire hats at childcare and received sun-protective swimwear and hats for home use, while children at the 12 control centers did not. The 1–35-month-old children (334 intervention; 210 control) were examined for moles at baseline (1999–2002) and were re-examined annually for up to 4 years. Both groups were similar at baseline. Children at intervention centers acquired fewer new moles overall (median 12.5 versus 16, p = 0.02; 0.46 versus 0.68 moles/month, p = 0.001) and fewer new moles on clothing-protected skin (6 vs. 8; p = 0.021 adjusted for confounding and cluster sampling) than controls. Intervention children had 24.3% fewer new moles overall (26.5 versus 35) and 31.6% (13 versus 19) fewer moles on clothing-protected skin than controls after 3.5 years. Sunlight’s influence on nevogenesis is mitigated when children regularly wear UPF 30-50+ clothing covering half their body, implying that increased clothing cover reduces melanoma risk. Sun-protective clothing standards should mandate reporting of the percentage of garment coverage for childrenswear.

Introduction: Due to the increasing incidence of skin cancer in the last decades a wide promotion of proper sun protection is needed. Mothers and their children commonly spending time outdoors are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of sunlight. Aim: To assess health awareness and behaviours connected to sun protection in the group of mothers of children under 6 years of age. Material and methods: An online survey containing 23 questions (19 closed and 4 open) was carried out between July and August 2019. One hundred and seven women (mean age: 30.7 ±4.3years) participated in the study. The mean age of children was 1.9 ±1.6years (range: 0-6 years). Results: One hundred and five (98.1%) mothers declared using sunscreen. Of them, 36 women used sunscreen only in summer, while 14 women applied sunscreen all year. Mothers of younger children used sunscreen all year round significantly more often (p = 0.041) compared to mothers of older children. Mothers of children under the age of 1 used sunscreen when staying in the shade more often (p = 0.025) than mothers of older children. Only 14 (13.3%) women declared applying sunscreen on their children during cloudy weather. Conclusions: A good photoprotection awareness of mothers, especially with respect to the youngest children was observed. However, a need for further education regarding certain photoprotection aspects (proper application and damaging effect of UVA) is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The incidence of skin cancer has been increasing in Puerto Rico in recent years. Sun protection behaviors are suboptimal among Puerto Ricans. However, there are limited data regarding major factors associated with Puerto Rican adults' sun protection behaviors. To examine factors associated with Puerto Rican adults' sun protection behaviors, a survey study was conducted in Puerto Rico. Method: A population-based sample of 667 Puerto Rican adults completed a telephone survey in 2016. Survey items addressed potential correlates of sun protection behaviors. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses examining correlates of the sun protection behaviors index were conducted. Results: Higher levels of sun protection behaviors were found among English language acculturated compared to Spanish language acculturated individuals (p <.05) and among individuals with private versus no health insurance (p <.05). Higher levels of sun protection behaviors were found among individuals with greater skin cancer knowledge (p <.001), fewer sun protection barriers (p <.01), and greater sun protection self-efficacy (p <.001). Conclusion: By identifying correlates of Puerto Rican adults' sun protection behaviors, this timely study provides insight on factors to target in future skin cancer interventions in this understudied population. Background: The substantial growth rate of skin cancer has necessitated adequate protection from solar radiation. Consequently, analyzing sun protection practices is an imperative research area in dermatology and pharmacology. Aims: This paper aims to analyze public sun‐protection manners in the Arabian Peninsula regions. Methods: A simple random survey was conducted to assess public sun protection manners. Artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) were selected from several machine learning algorithms to create the models for predicting public sun protection measures based on the prediction accuracy. Model performances were evaluated based on several performance indicators depending on the confusion matrices and receiver operating characteristic curves. Results: 51% of the respondents have a low level, and 49% have a high level of sun protection practices. The results showed that the SVM performed considerably amended than the ANN for predicting the response. The relative importance of the predictors for the best predictive SVM model was also analyzed. The predictors are ranked as: the number of times having sunburnt >gender > use seat belt while driving/riding a vehicle >considers the UV index for personal sun exposure >income based on the expenses >sports/exercise activities >consciousness of the chance for having sunburnt on extended exposure to the sun >age > having any skin problem >nationality > skin type. Conclusion: These identified significant predictors might be considered for developing an effective policy to increase public consciousness using proper protection from solar radiation's detrimental effect to rule out skin diseases. Sun protection has become crucial due to the effects of climate change that has resulted in effects such as extremely high temperatures. Early exposure of children to ultraviolet rays (UVR) makes them vulnerable to developing sun-related diseases later in life. Sun protection through clothing is the most affordable option to use for many people. The study assessed the awareness of sun protection for pre-school children among parents, and awareness of retailers about children's clothing with sun-protective finishes. This exploratory and descriptive study was conducted to describe the prevailing awareness of sun-protective clothing using a questionnaire that was hand-delivered by children to their parents. A target convenience sample was selected with 20 children in each of four pre-schools from the four administrative regions of Eswatini. A research assistant interviewed managers of purposefully selected retail outlets on whether managers are aware of clothing for children with sun-protective finishes. Results showed that a majority of parents were not aware of the need to protect their children against sun exposure. Those parents who were aware mainly used clothing as a preventative measure against sun exposure. Parents, who viewed sun exposure as a health hazard, were likely to be aware of sun-protective clothing and accessories. Thus, these parents generally selected garments made from light-coloured cotton fabric. Only one retail outlet stocked merchandise with specialised tags for sun-protective clothing. In conclusion, most parents were not aware of the effects of sun exposure and the hazards associated with prolonged exposure to the sun. Only one retail outlet stocked merchandise with sun-protective finishes. Background and Objective:A person’s putting every behavior into practice after they receive information on health may mean that the person can exhibit the appropriate health behavior and protect his health within the context of their level of health literacy. This study was aimed at determining university students’ health literacy levels and the effects of their health literacy on their knowledge of, and attitudes and behaviors towards skin cancer prevention strategies. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study included 800 university students in the Aegean Region of Turkey. The data were collected by the researchers between March 01, 2019 and March 30, 2019. The research data were collected using the Descriptive Characteristics Form including 3 parts (the Participants' Socio-Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, Information-Attitude-Behavior Questionnaire, Risk Factors Questionnaire) and the "Turkish Health Literacy Scale". The association between the sociodemographic characteristics of the students and their scores for protective behavior, knowledge levels and risk factors and Health Literacy was analyzed using the linear regression model (the ‘Enter’ method). The relationship between health literacy and knowledge/ attitude / behavior scores was evaluated with the Pearson’s correlation. p Results: The mean age of the participating students was 21.0 ± 1.8 (18-36) years. Of them, 63.8% were women. The study results demonstrated that the participating university students’ knowledge levels regarding the harmful effects of sunshine and skin cancer prevention were inadequate. There is a positive correlation between health literacy and sun protection attitudes and behaviors. Of the participating students, those whose health literacy levels were high and those who had high knowledge / attitude scores about sun protection displayed better sun protection behaviors (p
