HOREJŠOVÁ, Martina: George Gershwin: Concerto in F for piano and orchestra [Diploma thesis]. Charles University in Prague. Faculty of Arts. Institute of Musicology. Supervisor: prof. PhDr. Jarmila Gabrielová, CSc. Prague 2016. The main theme of the diploma thesis is a musical analysis of Concerto in F - the only Gershwin's piano concert from 1925. This diploma thesis also contains information about composer's life, contemporary historical context with relation to American cultural, social and political climate. As well text includes contemporary musical production, which influenced Gershwin's compositional technique. There will also be a comparison between George Gershwin and two other composers (Sergei Rachmaninoff and Maurice Ravel) who also created concert for piano and orchestra in the early 20th century.

Pod pojęciem „styl” kryje się zarówno sposób funkcjonowania człowieka w mieście, jak i wizerunek, który chce wytworzyć sobą – ubiorem, zachowaniem, przedmiotami, którymi się otacza. Właściwie każdy szczegół „stylizowania” staje się współcześnie niezwykle istotny a styl pełni rolę projektu estetycznego. Moda nie dotyczy wyłącznie stroju i ciała, ale jest zjawiskiem szerszym, procesem, który podporządkowuje sobie życie w mieście. Moda silnie skorelowana jest z nowoczesnością, miejski styl życia dotyczy nowoczesnych miast, szybkiego tempa, w jakim się w nich żyje i permanentnych zmian. Cechy te są zarazem atrybutami mody jako zjawiska, którego jedyną stałą własnością jest zmiana. Moda jest najprostszą reprezentacją nowoczesności i tym samym nośnikiem współczesnych wartości kulturowych: demokratyzacji, wolności, pluralizmu. Staje się ona spektaklem, który odgrywa się nie tylko na pokazach i okładkach czasopism, ale również na ulicach miast.

This diploma thesis entitled The caricature in the Dikobraz Magazine 1945 - 1968 deals with the artistic creation of the only satirical magazine in Czechoslovakia since its founding until the crucial year 1968. The thesis explores how caricatures deal with domestic and foreign events. It covers the work of selected cartoonists for the journal, as well as their free production. The thesis also focuses on the editors of the magazine due to their importance for its artistic production. Nevertheless, this part of the thesis is limited due to the limited amount of trustworthy sources.

The work describes a formation of the new style, a gradual development and signs in the public interior charasteristic for Steampunk. It analyzes public interiors, describes basic types of furniture, each accessories and characteristic composition of materials. It includes selected public spaces, which are located around the world and their typical signs and equipment. Photographs of public spaces are included.

The diploma thesis focuses on representation of protest in the official periodical of Czech Anarchist federation. It looks into the protest strategies which influence the level of personal lifestyle of an individual. This practice is connected to the issue of devaluation of the anarchist programme and more prominent emphasis on the form of the activities rather than the content. On the example of anarchist review Existence the thesis investigates how the practice is treated at the discursive level in Czech context. It poses a question whether the accent of a particular lifestyle results in shaping a required normative ideal of social identity. At the theoretical level, the thesis reflects how mainstream media tend to represent protest events. Simultaneously, it describes alternative media as the instrument to oppose the dominant media practice. Using the method of discourse analysis based on Norman Fairclough's linguistic approach, the text looks into the similarities between the mainstream and the alternative. The analysis focuses especially on modern tactics of the anarchist movement, politicization of everyday life, reflection of these phenomena within the movement and possible above-mentioned impact on the anarchist programme.

This thesis is one of the first works in the Czech language dealing with the personality and work of Marcus Cornelius Fronto, Roman rhetor of 2. century A. D. and teacher of Marcus Aurelius. After the palimpsest with the correspondence of Fronto was found in early 19th century, the reputation of this man suffered greatly. The man had been seen for many decades as superficial and flat archaisator, whose letters have no or only very little value for us. The aim of this tesis is to examinate the most problematical questions connected with Fronto, firstly his attitude to philosophy and the opinion, that archaism is the main and ubiquitous characteristic of his style. This theoretical treatise is accompanied with translation of several selected texts.

The aim of the thesis is to provide linguistic and stylistic analysis of selected works written by Irena Dousková with focus on use of instruments of nonstandard language. A key criterion for the selection of individual texts was the presence of nonstandard language instruments in given prose. The following works were selected: a novel Hrdý Budžes (1998), a novella Někdo s nožem (2000) and a series of small proses O bílých slonech (2008). The thesis introduces Irena Dousková as a present author of both sophisticated and popular literature, summarizes the themes and critical reception of the selected works, which are further subject of linguistic and stylistic analysis. Based on the analysis results the thesis presents conclusions on trends in proses of Irena Dousková, and thus characterizes the individual style of the artist, whose main feature is a stylization of spoken communication.

The aim of my diploma thesis called "Language and Style of Hana Bělohradská" is the linguistic analysis of Hana Bělohradská's works. I will focus mainly on her early works, ie the books which were published especially in the 60's of the 20th century. I will try to compare these texts to the works that were published in the 90's. The thesis will be devided into the theoretical and the practical part. The theoretical part will outline the author's life and the poetics of her works. Then I will briefly define the functional style of her literature. In the practical part I will focus on the analysis of the given works in terms of different language levels. These are the phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic levels. For greater transparency, the given phenomena will be explained on the specific parts from the texts examined. In conclusion, I will try to point at the development of language and style in Bělohradská's works.

The presented bachelor thesis, titled Czech speleologists speech, is focused on the language expressions of the amateur speleologists throughout the Czech Republic. It contains a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part outlines issues of the examining of the slang and describes the ways of the slang vocabulary enrichment. In the practical part the theoretical knowledge is aplied on the language material acquired by a questionnaire method from the active members of Czech Speleological Society. The bachelor thesis also draws from the Internet, and magazine articles. As a part of the thesis, there is a small dictionary of slang of this interest group.

The master thesis titled Ideologization and fragmentation of Skinhead subculture deals with historical background of Skinhead subculture genesis and with cleavages, that determinated its ideologization and fragmentation. Simultaneously it pays close attention to analysis of various branches of the Skinhead subculture. The first chapter of the thesis builds theoretical foundations of the research. In this chapter the terms culture, subculture and counterculture are explained. Accentutation is placed on common denominators as well as on differences in the definition of these terms. The second chapter of the master thesis deals equally with historical background of Skinhead subculture genesis and with subcultures with a significant impact on the formation of the Skinhead subculture. In this chapter the attention is focused on historical facts of political development in Great Britain after The Second World War, on subcultures popular at that time and on foundation of the Skinhead subculture. The third chapter of this thesis analyzes infiltration of the political ideologies inside the subculture and the following fragmentation of Skinheads. Tematem niniejszej monografii jest kategoria potoczności w tekstach dramatycznych Stanisława Wyspiańskiego. Sama potoczność ukazana jest szeroko, jako złożona kategoria, którą można interpretować wieloaspektowo. Prowadzone badania wychodzą poza analizę ściśle językową, potoczność przedstawiona zostaje jako model postawy światopoglądowej, a jednocześnie jako sposób odbierania i rozumienia rzeczywistości. Zasadnicze podsumowanie stanowi słownik potocyzmów i ekspresywizmów, który gromadzi leksemy i formy niemieszczące się w normie polszczyzny ogólnej zprzełomu XIX i XX wieku. Opracowanie łączy badania lingwistyczne z analizą teoretyczno-historyczno-literacką i może okazać się przydatne nie tylko dla językoznawców, ale także teatrologów i historyków literatury.

The present bachelor thesis comprises of the translation and the commentary on it. The source text comes from "Comparative European Politics" and deals with political parties and elections both in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The commentary begins with the profile of the target text and the source text analysis of extratextual and intratextual factors. The remaining chapters describe the translation method and discuss encountered translation problems as well as translation shifts.

This work deals with ideological trends in Czech hardcore scene. In the theoretical part it reflects the historical development of concept of subcultures from the beginning until now. Following with an explanation why it is preferable to describe hardcore with the concept of the scene. The next chapter is dedicated to the history of hardcore and tries to explain the specific ethos of the times in which hardcore was born. It also serves as a contextualization of the whole phenomena. The empirical part focuses on specific themes of hardcore ideology in Czech environment without losing sight of their roles in the past. This method tries to present hardcore more like a process than some closed phenomena stuck in time. The evolution and reflection of individual themes is important if hardcore should still be considered relevant, and thus critical and able to perceive social processes. Hardcore has started as a certain reaction to reflect the era and these characteristics are considered its roots. It was not a homogenous movement, and still is not to this day. We need to be well versed in hardcore to see its potential as a critique of the society, and the concept of "the little underground" provides a good starting point. This diploma thesis deals with Karel Schulz's novel Kámen a Bolest. In particular, it analyses its language, stylistic devices and scene composition. It also focuses on portrayal of characters and their life in Schulz's textual world. The conclusion suggests an overall interpretation of the signification of this novel, thus offerings a deeper insight into the work. It elucidates its peculiar emotional appeal and narrative strategy with which the author has created his fictional world. The methodology of this thesis is based on Přemysl Blažíček's literary-scientific and interpretative approach.

The article analyses the style of James Joyce’s interior monologue in ULYSSES and shows the degree of difficulty faced by translators, connected with the blending of third person narrative and free indirect speech exploiting features of colloquial spoken language in a written text. The resultant inexplicitness due to associative gaps and sparse punctuation affects interpretation of the text, as revealed in some problems identified in Maciej Słomczyński’s translation of ULYSSES into Polish. Due to morphosyntactic, lexical, and orthographic contrasts between the language of the original text, English, and the language of the translation, Polish, many nuanced meanings of the original text are ironed out in translation.

The bachelor thesis comprises of two main parts - the translation and the commentary on it. In the first part, a chapter from the book The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn by the British historian Eric Ives is translated. The source text deals with the marriage of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn and some of its aspects. The second part begins with the analysis of the source text based on Christiane Nord's model and the determination of the text's functions and the translation method. In the next chapters, the major translation problems are discussed along with the translation shifts that took place during the translation process.

(in English): This work deals with the use of condensed and abbreviated expressions in journalism. Based on the literature and compiled corpus of texts a research was conducted and a list of expressions was compiled. Expressions were compared with material from the Czech National Corpus and analyzed in terms of the way of formation, semantic groups, frequency of occurrence, stylistic characteristics and predicted addressee. The paper examines generic and stylistic relations between the novel Pharaoh by Bolesław Prus and the 19th century writings devoted to the ancient Egypt. Monographs, handbooks, reportages, newspaper articles are considered not so much the sources of the knowledge as the sort of generic matrix elaborated for people of the West to write and read on the Egyptian civilisation. The author discusses several connections between Pharaoh and the content of “Tygodnik Ilustrowany”, a weekly where the novel was published. The 19th century press is considered here not a merely medium for a novel in serial nor even a simple source of ideology, but also a network of generic and thus cognitive instruments necessary for a novelist. Artykuł dotyczy gatunkowych i stylistycznych związków między powieścią Faraon Bolesława Prusa a dziewiętnastowiecznym piśmiennictwem poświęconym starożytnemu Egiptowi Monografie, podręczniki, reportaże, artykuły gazetowe występują tu nie tyle jako źródła wiedzy, ile jako gatunkowa matryca wypracowana przez i dla człowieka Zachodu, umożliwiająca mu pisanie i czytanie o staroegipskiej cywilizacji. Szczególną uwagę poświęca autor roli prasy, zwłaszcza „Tygodnika Ilustrowanego”, gdzie Prus publikował swą powieść. Dziewiętnastowieczne czasopismo, zdaniem autora, nie jest wyłącznie miejscem publikacji utworu literackiego. Zawarte w nim teksty wchodzą z nim w rozmaite relacje stylistyczne, gatunkowe i poznawcze. „Tygodnik Ilustrowany” pośredniczył między Faraonem a piśmiennictwem egiptologicznym poprzez szereg artykułów popularyzujących.

In this paper, the author presents a critical edition of three chapters on rhetorical de-vices excerpted from the treatise O wymowie i stylu (On Eloquence and Style, Warsaw 1815) written by Stanisław Kostka Potocki (1755-1821), an enlightened man of letters. He begins with a brief introduction to a reading of Potocki’s text on some figurative uses of language. The author explains the circumstances in which Potocki wrote his rhetorical manual (the request of the Warsaw Society of Friends of Learning) and discusses its most important sources, both classic (Aristotle’s On Rhetoric, Cicero’s On the Ideal Orator, Quintilian’s Institutions of Oratory) and modern (César Chesneau Dumarsais’ Traité des Tropes, Paris 1730, Hugh Blair’s Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres, Dublin, Edinburgh 1783). With a few explanatory remarks on the three chapters presenting the nature of figurative language (in particular metaphor, personification, hyperbole and apostrophe) the author examines the connection between the rhetorical considerations on style and the Enlightenment philosophy of language. According to Stanisław Kostka Potocki, the tropes and rhetorical figures, being almost natural expressions of emotions, passions and imagination, should be regarded as the primordial origin of the human language. Thus the Enlightenment, the triumph of analytical (‘pure’) reason over imagination tinged with emotionality, is a period when authors intentionally limited the use of figurative language (although never totally rejected it) in order to reach the simplicity of the linguistic expression.

This thesis consists of two main parts. The first part contains a Czech translation of the introduction and following two chapters of the book Un cheval chez soi en 10 leçons. The chapters are called Acheter son cheval and Son environnement. The second part includes a commentary of the translation, describing a translation analysis of the original text. It also deals with problems of the translation and their solutions as well as methods and shifts used during the process of translation.

The article discusses the presence of mass culture, and especially of proper names derived from it, in the latest Polish prose. A special attention has been paid to the function of propria, whereas an analysis of numerous fragments of Ignacy Karpowicz’s novel — Balladyny i romanse — served to answer the question about the place of popular culture in literature. Furthermore, the idea of literary “remix” of formatives, which regards their creative alteration, and which results in the revitalisation of proper names by providing them with new meaning, has been proposed.

The image of a man in popular gay literature, which has been analysed in the present article, confirms the specific character of this type of writing. Addressed to the mass audience, and referring to the clichè phenomenon, black‑and‑white vision of reality, and hyperblization, the popular literary works unequivocally profile and emphasise these aspects of reality which the audience may consider interesting. A man is perceived mostly as a sexual object, as his physical appearance, sexual activity, etc. are being highlighted. His personality and character features are peripherial. The reasons for such a state of affairs may be numerous, yet two of them seem to be most important. One is a desire to draw the attention of the mass audience who expects a text of culture to abound with bold pictures of sex and corporeality (here, additionally, it is sex of a minority, evoking outrage, and for a long time absent from Polish writings). Moreover, in such an image of the world, one should discern another strong, scandalous and provocative emancipating act of the representatives of sexual minorities.

Pudelek? Polityka? Przybora? Selecting texts for analysis on linguistics classes The article describes three spheres of culture which can be used as sources of texts for linguistics classes, evoked by the nicknames mentioned in the title: Pudelek.pl (a gossip website) as a source of mass culture texts, Polityka (a widely-read opinion weekly) as an example of the political discourse, and finally Jeremi Przybora (a perfectionist lord of the Polish language) as an example of the highbrow culture texts. The article results from author’s own teaching experience. She introduces vocabulary of the public discourse, distinguishing between the “flagship” words, the winged words, and the words that changed their due to the influence of political correctness (i.e. words which were “turned inside out”). Particularly important here seem to be the winged words which, characterized by their condensed form, are able to built both cultural continuity and group identity. The present thesis deals with two present-day English translations of the Bible - New American Standard Bible, which represents a conservative biblical translation, and Good News Bible, a more liberal translation, written in a way to be readable and accessible to the modern reader. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the two translations in terms of style, focusing on the syntactic and lexical levels. The research is based on a sample of 100 corresponding biblical verses drawn from each of the translations (altogether 200 verses), representing five different narrative parts of the Bible. The analysis of the lexical level is a qualitative one, comparing the nature of the vocabulary used in the two translations; the syntactic level is examined both qualitatively and quantitatively. The thesis attempts not only to describe the findings but also account for them, where possible, in terms of reader reception.

This thesis is aimed to create template for the theses preparation in DocBook using XSL stylesheet. Template is in accordance with the rules for creating theses of the Faculty of Business and Economics, Mendel University. Thesis also includes selecting an appropriate processor to convert the source files into the PDF output and detailed guide to template.

The following bachelor's thesis concerns the remake, in the context of its use in the history of cinema and in film theory. I discuss the various definitions and possible forms of the remake, which has existed since the inception of film. Each theoretical consideration of the remake brings about a different choice of perspective and method of examination. Thus, the main part of the thesis is comprised of an effort to acquire a new apparatus through which one can think of the remake as a variant interpretation of the original work. In this regard, I transpose approaches from literary theory to film discourse, mainly referencing the theoretical methods of Gérard Genette, Julia Kristeva, Seymour Chatman, Umberto Eco and the concepts of intertextuality and interpretation. The last chapter analyzes two specific films, positioning Takashi Miike's Visitor Q as a remake of Pier Paolo Pasolini's Teorema. The relationship between remake and original develops new readings of both works. A remake is, in fact, based on the filmmaker's unique reading of an original work. This reading marks the transition between the filmmaker's experience as a viewer of the original and their position as creator of the remake.

Tekst przedstawia genezę, inspiracje, podstawowe założenia, pola zainteresowania, kluczowe pojęcia Krytycznej Analizy Dyskursu (w skrócie KAD) w ujęciu jej prekursora Normana Fairclougha. KAD to rozwijająca się, także u nas, metoda analizy dyskursu, poruszająca się na szerokim pograniczu nauk humanistycznych i społecznych. Akcentuje ona społeczny kontekst „języka w użyciu” i jego relacje z rzeczywistością społeczną. Metodologiczna i interdyscyplinarna otwartość tego podejścia stanowi odpowiedź na multimodalne, złożone i często nieprzejrzyste zjawiska i struktury społeczno-kulturowe, w których przeplatają się wątki pochodzące z różnych domen, a które wymykają się tradycyjnym dyscyplinarnym klasyfikacjom. Chodzi między innymi o życie polityczne, religię, gospodarkę, media, kulturę promocyjną czy przemysł rozrywkowy. The bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of a fable, a unique genre of literature. More specifically, it analyses Hana Vrbová's translations of fables written by Krylov .The paper is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part is focused on fable in general, its history, tradition in Russian literature, and particularity of I. A. Krylov's work. The paper also provides a variety of idioms, phrases and aphorisms which are contained in the writer's fables and also became commonly used in Russian. Final chapter of the theoretical part is focused on translations of Krylov's fables in connection with the history of translation from Russian literature into Czech from the period of the Czech National Liberation period to the present time. The practical part analyses translations of the most defining characteristics in the fables such as idioms, geographic names, titles, names of animals and people, rhythm and metre. Those are further compared with their original forms. Moreover, the final part compares older translations by Hana Vrbová with the 2011 work made by Milan Dvořák. W artykule rozważam problem norm i wartości, jakimi kierują się obecnie przedstawiciele subkultury punk. Chcąc uchwycić przemianę, jakiej uległy subkultury, wyszedłem z baumanowskiej koncepcji ponowoczesności. Przedstawiam obraz współczesnych punków z punktu widzenia Davida Muggletona, twórcy pojęcia „postsubkutury”, oraz staram się udowodnić, że zaproponowana przez niego koncepcja zbyt krytycznie i jednostronnie postrzega problem współczesnych grup o charakterze subkulturowym. Proponuję, aby analiza zjawiska subkultury punk uwzględniała pojęcie „ekskorporacji” Johna Fiske oraz „taktyk” i „strategii” działania opisywanych przez Michela de Certeau.

(in English): The goal of this bachelor thesis is to study particularities in field of contemporary Czech indie music subculture. In the theoretical part, it defines the indie idea and proposes different optics how to describe this modern trend of alternative culture. It is also a method of social differentiation among other trends. I have gathered data and analyzed them according to qualitative methodology. Contemporary Czech indie culture is percepted as a field of restricted artistic production consisted of relations and interactions between constituent institutions and actors. This thesis points out that origins of indie are associated with music tradition of United States of America and Great Britain. It is unoriginal trend in Czech Republic. This work analyzes local interpretations of indie idea and particularitis of this field. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to translate selected chapters of the first part of the book How to Choose Wine by Vincent Gasnier, and then to write a commentary to the translation. The commentary includes translation analysis of the source text, the description of the applied translation method, main translation problems and their solutions, and finally it describes translation shifts which have occurred in the translation. In this thesis I work with four books by Ota Pavel. These are following titles, in chronological order according to a date of publication: Dukla mezi mrakodrapy (Dukla between Skyscrapers), Plná bedna šampaňského (A Carton Full of Champagne), Syn celerového krále (The Celery King's Son) and Pohádka o Raškovi (The Fairy Tale about Raška). Their common characteristic is that - according to a classification of The Institute of Czech Literature - they all represent Pavel's journalistic sports books. I inspect them from two points of view. The first one is the content itself: there at first I analyse Pavel's attitude to a narration and then a character of the text in terms of language, which includes, among others, elements of journalistic and artistic style and stylistic devices. The second view of Pavel's sport reportages issue are their historical and later media response (reviews, studies...). Those will complete a picture of analysed material and serve as an factor to compare gained results with reactions of the expert and media public. My aim is to sum up findings of the narrative and language analyses in the first part and assess the outputs of comparative analysis in the part two.

Ústav pro dějiny umění Diplomová práce Dana Christianová Relations of Fine Art and Design in interwar Czechoslovakia Abstract (in English) The work deals with relations of Fine Arts and Design in the context of the First Republic, when marked a fundamental transformation not only in art in general, but just in handicraft and design. This work demonstrates changes that have occurred in the perception, classification and finally democratization of design, by the example of textile art and personality of Marie Teinitzerová, who was at the interface of fine art, handicraft and design and significantly contributed to the promotion of new aesthetic values in all of these areas.

This thesis Baroque as a Style in the Concept of Vojtěch Birnbaum is dealing with the formulation of an important theoretical work Baroque Principle in History of Art (1924) of Czech art historian Vojtěch Birnbaum (1877-1934). In five chapters it deals with this exceptional work of Czech art history. After a brief introduction of Vojtěch Birnbaum it looks into the formulation of Baroque Principle in History of Art. It then sets this work into the historical context of Czech art history in the beginning of the 20th century. The thesis also sets this work into theoretical range of thinking about baroque from its origins up to this day. At last but not least it interprets Birnbaum's concept of baroque style in history of art.

This bachelor thesis contains a translation of Calvin Thomas's article "Last Laughs: Batman, Masculinity and Technology of Abjection", which was published in a gender- oriented magazine Men and Masculinities. The second part of this thesis is a commentary on the translation. The commentary includes a translation analysis; it focuses according to relevance on extratextual and intratextual factors and on various translation problems that occurred in the process. The commentary describes strategies for dealing with the problems as well as the typology of translation shifts that occurs in the target text.
