During the 1910s and 1920s, two nautical clubs and one regatta club were opened in Florianópolis – capital of the state of Santa Catarina, in Brazil. Rowing, as a sport, began to be encouraged among the native youth. Newspapers and magazines started to interact with the public by promoting competitions and rewarding the winners of the regattas with the publication of colored photos. Poems and plays that paid tribute to both rowers and maritime disputes were written by local artists. The Clubs, which did not have the financial support of the Brazilian Confederation, promoted dancing dinners organized by the young uniformed fans. In the first half of the 20th century, in Florianópolis, rowing helped to improve sociability and created heroes who exhibited strength, beauty and discipline. So a question arises: “Why has rowing become a trend in florianopolitan society at this particular time?”. Starting from this unpretentious question and from the analysis of selected sources that reproduce countless silences, especially those concerning the theater and the women, this study was conceived in the form of short essays that narrate some of the activities that derived from the practice of rowing in Florianópolis.

À partir d'une revue exhaustive des études d'exposition humaine à des échappements diesel choisis comme modèles de polluants liés au trafic, les auteurs concluent qu'elles ont permis de faire progresser les connaissances sur les impacts sanitaires, en complément des nombreuses études épidémiologiques, et ont pu fournir des éléments de causalité. Elles présentent cependant des limites et n'ont pas pu mettre en évidence des marqueurs spécifiques d'exposition. The Journal for New Testament Studies and the Study of the Early Church published several articles in its latest issue. In Biblica, topics such as inheritance, inclusion, and identity in Tobit and the Jewish diaspora, the vocabulary of the Gospel of Mark and the Greek language at the time, Paul and dangerous pious women in the Acts of the Apostles, as well as current questions regarding the Letter to the Philippians were addressed. In the Biblical Journal, articles on salvation in Jesus Christ, the resurrection account in the Gospel of John, and the Beatitudes of the New Testament were published. In the journal Early Christianity, topics such as the classification of early Christian writings, the evil eye and the cross, as well as freedom and intellect in the First Letter of Peter were discussed. Additional articles were published in the journals Evangelische Theologie, Filologia Neotestamentaria, Kerygma et Dogma, New Testament Studies, Revue Biblique, Revue de Théologie et de Philosophie, and Zeitschrift für Neues Testament. The purpose of the article is to identify the main trends in the influence of jazz and music forms on pop culture. The research methodology involves recourse to an interdisciplinary approach, as well as the use of comparative, historical, and logical methods of analysis and culturological approach in the study of these issues. The scientific novelty of the work is to generalize the problems of interaction and influence of jazz features of vocals on the development of pop vocals, expanding knowledge about the development of pop and song culture in general. Conclusions. The formation of pop singing is inextricably linked with the widespread of music halls, variety shows, cabaret, pop theaters, and more. By the end of the twentieth century, the media, the Internet, and screen culture led to the spread of pop vocals on a new level and pop singing became an integral part of everyday life. All these aspects and features of the jazz genre-style system had an indirect impact on the work of composers who turned to songwriting in the pop sphere, considered jazz as a mediator between "serious" and light musical forms while giving jazz techniques creative and methodological potential. Understanding the music culture of specific pop-jazz types (genres) of modern music influences the understanding of pop, pop vocals, and pop-jazz music as a phenomenon of art. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1934 was a pivotal year for Yves Simon. He then accepted to be codirector of the collection “Cours et Documents de philosophie” (Philosophical Classes and Documents) entrusted to him by Jacques Maritain; he returned to his studies on Proudhon undertaken after his licentiate at the Sorbonne ; he committed himself to the study of social questions, distancing himsself from Abbé Daniel Lallement who had accompanied him for almost ten years; he also accepted the function of editing secretary of the Revue de philosophie of the faculty of Philosophy of the Institut catholique of Paris where Jacques Maritain was teaching. Then, precious collaborator of Jacques Maritain for a “living Thomism”, Yves Simon worked on questions of epistemology in the line of thought of the Degrés du savoir (Degrees of Knowledge), published articles on work, the federalism of Proudhon, and a work reflecting politically on the Ethiopian Campaign in the collection directed by Maritain, all the while being associated with the reflexions of his master who was in the process of preparing Humanisme integral (1936) and who took position concerning the Spanish Civil War (1937). His project of writing on “The Political Philosophy of M. Jacques Martain” was never realised, for he was invited in 1938 to take up a position teaching Thomistic metaphysics at Notre Dame University in the United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stylometric analysis of medieval vernacular texts is still a significant challenge: the importance of scribal variation, be it spelling or more substantial, as well as the variants and errors introduced in the tradition, complicate the task of the would-be stylometrist, by inducing noise and perhaps even interferences in the authorship signal. Basing the analysis on the study of the copy from a single hand of several texts can partially mitigate these issues (Camps and Cafiero, 2013, Setting bounds in a homogeneous corpus: a methodological study applied to medieval literature. In this article, we use a workflow combining handwritten text recognition and stylometric analysis, applied to the case of the hagiographic works contained in MS BnF, fr. 412. We seek to evaluate Paul Meyer's hypothesis about the constitution of groups of hagiographic works, as well as to examine potential authorial groupings in a vastly anonymous corpus. In the historical context of the development and modernization of the press, of an increasingly intense transnational circulation of ideas and of editorial styles, this essay sets out to analyze the reasons why reading rooms specialized in the foreign-language press, especially in English—for which the market was narrow—were successful in Paris during the first half of the nineteenth century. It examines the consequences of the circulation of the normally difficult to access British periodicals and newspapers, such as the Edinburgh Review, the Quarterly Review and the Westminster Review present in these reading rooms, on the transformation of the French media system. In the 1850s and 1860s, the wind started to change direction. By then, on the other side of the Channel, Alexander Macmillan and Mathew Arnold had become fervent admirers of the famous Revue des deux mondes. This turnabout testifies to the complexity of the mechanisms at work behind transnational cultural transfers and media innovation in France and in Britain at the time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cet article propose une synthèse des recherches ayant mobilisé le concept de distance psychologique autour des questions liées aux comportements prosociaux du consommateur, à la digitalisation de la consommation et aux pratiques marketing. Ce travail s'appuie sur une méta-synthèse de 584 articles issus de revues en psychologie et en marketing. Il permet une consolidation et une validation des connaissances du concept de distance psychologique dans ces différentes thématiques du marketing. Il montre également comment la distance psychologique peut être actionnée par les managers afin d'améliorer les réponses du consommateur. Les managers peuvent agir directement sur la distance en la réduisant ou l'augmentant pour profiter des bienfaits de la proximité ou de l'éloignement psychologique. Ils peuvent également ajuster les variables du marketing-mix en fonction de la distance psychologique expérimentée par le consommateur pour fluidifier le traitement de l'information et, in fine, améliorer les réponses de ce dernier. Résumé: Devant les nombreuses évolutions organisationnelles des pharmacies à usage intérieur (PUI), le recours à la gestion de projet semble être une solution adéquate afin de répondre à ces évolutions. Cette méthode offre notamment la possibilité de fédérer les équipes autour de projet commun, de travailler de manière décloisonnée et de conduire le changement. Mais la gestion de projet est une méthode à part entière qui nécessite des connaissances solides et des formations pour être appliquée au mieux. Cette revue de la littérature présente successivement l'histoire de la gestion de projet, puis le fonctionnement théorique de cette méthode en s'appuyant notamment sur deux normes ISO. Le pharmacien hospitalier bénéficie d'une place de choix pour conduire des projets transversaux grâce à sa position à l'interface des unités de soins, des plateaux médicaux techniques pour une prise en charge globalisée des patients. Aujourd'hui, il doit se positionner comme manager et être à même de conduire le changement mais il ne bénéficie pas encore de ces apports théoriques au cours de sa formation initiale. Faced with the many organizational changes in hospital pharmacies, project management seems to be an adequate solution in order to respond to these evolutions. This method offers in particular the possibility to federate the teams around a common project, to work in an open-ended manner and to lead the change. But project management is a method which requires solid knowledge and training to be applied in the best possible way. This review of the literature presents successively the history of project management, then the theoretical functioning of this method, relying in particular on the two ISO standards. The hospital pharmacist have a special position at the interface of many care processes or patient clinical pathways to lead transversal projects. Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) remain a major risk to patients, despite level 1 evidence for screening to prevent rupture events and decrease mortality. In 2007, the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery (CSVS) published a review and position statement for AAA screening in Canada. Since that publication, there have been a number of updates in the published literature affecting screening recommendations. In this paper, we present a review of some of the controversies in the AAA screening literature to help elucidate differences in the various published screening guidelines. This article represents a review of the data and updated recommendations for AAA screening in the Canadian population on behalf of the CSVS. Les anévrismes de l'aorte abdominale (AAA) continuent de poser un risque majeur pour les patients, malgré des données probantes de niveau 1 à l'appui du dépistage pour prévenir les ruptures et réduire la mortalité. En 2007, la Société canadienne de chirurgie vasculaire (SCCV) a publié une revue et un énoncé de position sur le dépistage de l'AAA au Canada. Depuis lors, plusieurs mises à jour ont paru dans la littérature et elles ont un impact sur les recommandations relatives au dépistage. Dans le présent article, nous présentons une synthèse de quelques controverses soulevées dans la littérature sur le dépistage de l'AAA afin d'expliquer les différences entre les diverses lignes directrices publiées à ce sujet. Previous studies have raised the hypothesis that laboratory‐reared insects may lose their ability to induce plant defenses because induction‐associated gut bacteria may be eliminated by antibiotics used in artificial diets. The present study was conducted to determine whether maize (Zea mays L., Poaceae) responses to Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) differ when field‐collected vs. laboratory‐reared insects are feeding. One fifth instar from the laboratory or field was released onto a resistant or a susceptible landrace variety at vegetative stages 4 and 6 (V4 and V6), or plants remained uninfested. Five days later, damage was estimated and sections of maize leaves were fed to forth instars in a Petri dish assay to assess the effects of previous feeding on weight gain, leaf consumption, and nutritional indices of conspecifics. Initially, field‐collected larvae caused more damage on V4, but not on V6 maize plants, than laboratory‐reared larvae. In V6 plants, the resistant variety showed less leaf damage than the susceptible variety. In a Petri dish assay, there were no differences between effects of laboratory‐reared and field‐collected larvae on the measured parameters, but larvae from both sources promoted increased susceptibility in maize plants at the V4, but not the V6 stage. This was characterized by higher weight gain and higher efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) (on both maize varieties), and lower metabolic cost (MC) (on one variety) when S. frugiperda larvae fed on leaves pre‐infested with laboratory‐reared larvae compared to leaves of uninfested plants. Conversely, S. frugiperda larvae fed on leaves pre‐infested with field‐collected larvae consumed a greater amount of leaf tissue (on both varieties) compared to leaves of uninfested plants. A similar experiment with neonates showed no effects of landrace variety or previous infestation on insect weight and survival, but insects obtained a higher body weight when fed on V4 compared to V6 plants. In conclusion, S. frugiperda laboratory‐reared larvae were equally able as field‐collected larvae to induce susceptibility in V4 maize plants, and maize plants were more resistant to the pest at the V6 than at the V4 stage. There is increasing need to understand physiological mechanisms of warm‐season turfgrass species for potential use in salt‐affected soils due to increased use of recycled water for irrigation in arid and semi‐arid regions. Greenhouse screenings previously conducted during 2014 and 2015 at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, and determined relative salinity tolerance among 45 experimental genotypes representing four warm‐season turfgrass species under salinity levels ranging from 2.5 to 45 dS m−1. From that study, eight genotypes (two genotypes representing the highest and lowest relative salinity tolerance from each of four species) were advanced for additional evaluations aimed at characterizing physiological responses to salinity in this study. Genotypes included 'Celebration®' and 'UGB79' bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.), 'DALZ1313' and 'Zeon' zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.), 'UGP3' and 'UGP38' seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum), and 'Floratam' and 'Palmetto' St. Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze]. Grasses were grown in the greenhouse and sub‐irrigated daily for 4 weeks at salinity levels of 2.5, 15 and 30 dS m−1. Responses including visual turf quality, shoot growth rates, salt excretion rates, root and shoot tissue nutrient concentrations, as well as root and shoot Na:K were characterized. Results showed that all grasses adjusted osmotically under increasing salinity levels. However, differences in Na:K were noted among species, with bermudagrass and seashore paspalum genotypes maintaining proportionally lower Na:K in roots and shoots than zoysiagrass and St. Augustinegrass under salinity stress. Salt excretion rates also increased at increasing salinity in zoysiagrass and bermudagrass, with greater salt excretion observed in the salinity‐tolerant genotypes of each species. We show that limit varieties of monoids recently discovered by Gusev, Zhang and Luo and their subvarieties are generated by monoids of the form M τ (W) for certain congruences τ on the free monoid. The construction M τ (W) is a generalization of widely used Dilworth–Perkins construction. Using this construction, we find explicit generators for Gusev limit varieties and give a short reproof to the fact that Zhang–Luo limit variety is non-finitely based. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present results based on |${2{^{\prime \prime}_{.}}5}$| -resolution observations using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillmeter Array (ALMA) of the Galactic center molecular cloud G−0.02−0.07, or the 50 km s−1 molecular cloud (50 MC), in the SO (NJ = 22–11) line and 86 GHz continuum emission, the combination of which is considered to trace "hot molecular core candidates" (HMCCs) appearing in the early stage of massive-star formation. In the 86 GHz continuum image, we identified nine dust cores in the central part of the 50 MC, in which four famous compact H  ii regions are located. No new ultra-compact H  ii regions were found. We also identified 28 HMCCs in the 50 MC with the SO line. The overall SO distribution had no clear positional correlation with the identified H  ii regions. The HMCCs in the 50 MC showed a variety of association and non-association with dust and Class I CH3OH maser emissions. The variety suggests that they are not in a single evolutionary stage or environment. Nevertheless, the masses of the identified HMCCs were found to be well approximated by a single power law of their radii, M LTE/(M⊙) = 5.44 × 105 [ r /(pc)]2.17 at T ex = 50–100 K. The derived HMCC masses were larger than those of the molecular cores with the same radii in the 50 MC, and also than those of the molecular clumps in the Galactic disk. The purpose of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) approach of mathematics teachers for empirical studies published on the Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, and Scielo databases from the years 2018 until 2020. There are two defined objectives: 1) to characterize empirical research developed within the framework of the TPACK model for math teachers and 2) to describe the approaches used to identify the TPACK of math teacher. The databases searches were performed in September 2020. The following search criteria were used: 1) articles with empirical findings on quantitative and/or qualitative analysis of the TPACK of math teachers and 2) articles that use the TPACK framework for the analysis of pedagogical experiences. The results show a variety of approaches for examining the teacher's TPACK. In conclusion, identifying the teacher's TPACK through performance evaluations is more frequent in research than in self-reports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a computational inverse design method for a new class of surface-based inflatable structure. Our deployable structures are fabricated by fusing together two layers of inextensible sheet material along carefully selected curves. The fusing curves form a network of tubular channels that can be inflated with air or other fluids. When fully inflated, the initially flat surface assumes a programmed double-curved shape and becomes stiff and load-bearing. We present a method that solves for the layout of air channels that, when inflated, best approximate a given input design. For this purpose, we integrate a forward simulation method for inflation with a gradient-based optimization algorithm that continuously adapts the geometry of the air channels to improve the design objectives. To initialize this non-linear optimization, we propose a novel surface flattening algorithm. When a channel is inflated, it approximately maintains its length, but contracts transversally to its main direction. Our algorithm approximates this deformation behavior by computing a mapping from the 3D design surface to the plane that allows for anisotropic metric scaling within the bounds realizable by the physical system. We show a wide variety of inflatable designs and fabricate several prototypes to validate our approach and highlight potential applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En s’appuyant sur la revue G-Material zur elementaren Gestaltung, publiée par Hans Richter à Berlin entre 1923 et 1926, l’article montre que les avant-gardes historiques ont d’emblée pensé leur rapport à l’art comme radical, dans la mesure où elles entendaient transformer les moyens artistiques – et à travers eux – les pratiques culturelles et les représentations sociales de leur époque.

In its cinematographic dimension, Soviet Constructivism turns the city into a stage upon which amazing deeds, burlesque situations and acrobatics are performed. The circus, music-hall and variety shows are the new genres that are incorporated first into the theatre, advocated by the Left Front of the Arts (LEF), and shortly afterwards into the cinema. At the same time, the urban space becomes the epitome of the technology propelled by the Soviet state, which drove the industrialisation of the country: factories, machines and engines, road traffic, telecommunications and, of course, the cinema. The present paper addresses these questions – the 'technification' and the eccentric view of the city of the Soviet cinema-makers – through the analysis of three period-defining works. The first of these is Glumov's Diary (S. M. Eisenstein, 1923), a satirical short film integrated in the mise-en-scene of Enough Simplicity for Every Wise Man, a play by Aleksander Ostrovski; the second is The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr West in the Land of the Bolsheviks (Lev Kuleshov, 1924); and the third work studied is The Adventures of Oktiabrina (Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg, 1924), the first film by the FEKS group. Heavy metals are hazardous pollutants for humans, animals and plants, when their threshold concentration exceeds. Tobacco can accumulate higher concentrations of heavy metals, and the genotypic differences of tobacco in heavy metal uptake and their growth responses have not been clearly examined. In this study, the effects of nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) on phytoremediation capabilities were tested in four local Oriental tobacco cultivars (Basma, Akhisar, Sarıbağlar and Dibek). In two pot experiments, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (P) were applied in fıxed doses, while Pb and Ni were applied at 4 different doses (10, 50, 100 and 150 mg kg-1). Plants were harvested after 50 days of growing period, and separated into roots, stems, leaves. The biomass values were measured, and Pb and Ni concentrations were quantified in plant organs. Results revealed that Basma cultivar had the highest total biomass value with 16.63 and 15.92 g pot-1 for Ni and Pb contents, respectively. While, the lowest total biomass was recorded in Dibek cultivar with 7.09 and 5.71 g pot-1 for Ni and Pb, respectively. The biomass, Ni and Pb uptake and accumulation capabilities remained in the following order of cultivars Basma > Akhisar > Sarıbağlar > Dibek. Depending on the application doses, Ni and Pb concentrations of different plant parts (roots, stems and leaves) of all varieties showed significant (p < 0.01) increases compared to the control treatments. All of the plant parts of Basma variety had higher Ni and Pb concentrations than the Akhisar, Sarıbağlar and Dibek variety. Nickel concentrations in the roots, stems and leaves of different cultivars were determined to be the least in the control application and the highest in the NPK+150 mg kg-1 Ni (Ni4) application. Lead concentrations in the roots, stems and leaves of different cultivars were determined to be the least in the control application and the highest in the NPK+150 mg kg-1 Pb (Pb4) application. Basma variety with higher enrichment factor (EF) and bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values were also found to be more effective than the other varieties for phytoremediation of Ni and Pb. The objective of this study was to examine the Ni and Pb uptake, transport and accumulation properties of oriental tobacco with special emphasis on its different varieties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the nutritional quality of different rice varieties (Taichung-176, Khumal-4 rice, and Black rice) with Jumli Marsi rice. The highest nutritional factors and phytochemical components were found in the Marsi rice (RR) and Black rice (BR). The highest amount of antioxidant property and phenolic content was found in Black rice which was 61.58 ± 0.02% and 22.75 ± 0.02GAE/100g respectively. The reducing sugar was found to be highest in the TR rice variety, which was 2.74±0.01%. The results also highlight the cooking and physicochemical properties of rice depending on the amylose content of rice varieties. The qualitative analysis of the phytochemical content in different rice varieties showed the presence of tannin, flavonoid, alkaloid, and terpenoid in Marsi and BR. While anthraquinone and saponin were negative for all the rice varieties, protein and glycoside were found to be present in all the rice varieties. Also, the pigmented rice varieties were found to have high nutritional components compared to the non-pigmented rice varieties. The fifth part of the cycle is devoted to the presentation of the main Parisian musical critics' opinions on the Tannhäuser's performance at Palais Garnier on May 13th, 1895, conducted by Paul Taffanel and directed by Alexander Lapissida. If these journalists - such as Jacques Weber of Le Temps, Catulle Mendès of La Revue de Paris, Hippolyte Fierens-Gevaert of Journal des débats, Paul Dukas of La Revue hebdomadaire, Ferdinand Le Borne of Le Monde artiste, Henry Gauthier-Villars of L'Écho de Paris, Alfred Bruneau of Gil Blas, and some others that are recalled in the article, were not unanimous on various aspects of this production, all of them considered Ernest Van Dyck, interpreting the title role, as the principle triumphator of the evening. While teasing can sometimes cause offence, the limits of what counts as acceptable teasing is a function of the localised sequential environment and broader sociocultural context in which it occurs. In this article, we examine the sequential and moral implications of claims to non-serious intent in teasing sequences arising in television talk shows. Drawing from an analysis of over 28 hours of variety shows broadcast in Mainland China and Taiwan, we examined 25 sequences involving claims by participants to be 'kidding' (kaiwanxiao). From this analysis it emerged that claims to be 'kidding' are used in these contexts to: (1) disclaim any (potential) offence caused through teasing, (2) signal a return to serious talk following teasing, (3) reproach the other for teasing that is construed as going too far, (4) and boost the humorous impact of self-boasting in response to teasing. While the first two are consistent with the usage of equivalent expressions in other languages, the latter two have not been identified in studies to date, thereby underscoring the importance of studying jocular forms of teasing in different linguistic and sociocultural contexts. We investigate how the motive of hyper-Kähler varieties is controlled by weight-2 (or surface-like) motives via tensor operations. In the first part, we study the Voevodsky motive of singular moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on K3 and abelian surfaces as well as the Chow motive of their crepant resolutions, when they exist. We show that these motives are in the tensor subcategory generated by the motive of the surface, provided that a crepant resolution exists. This extends a recent result of Bülles to the O'Grady-10 situation. In the non-commutative setting, similar results are proved for the Chow motive of moduli spaces of (semi-)stable objects of the K3 category of a cubic fourfold. As a consequence, we provide abundant examples of hyper-Kähler varieties of O'Grady-10 deformation type satisfying the standard conjectures. In the second part, we study the André motive of projective hyper-Kähler varieties. We attach to any such variety its defect group, an algebraic group which acts on the cohomology and measures the difference between the full motive and its weight-2 part. When the second Betti number is not 3, we show that the defect group is a natural complement of the Mumford–Tate group inside the motivic Galois group, and that it is deformation invariant. We prove the triviality of this group for all known examples of projective hyper-Kähler varieties, so that in each case the full motive is controlled by its weight-2 part. As applications, we show that for any variety motivated by a product of known hyper-Kähler varieties, all Hodge and Tate classes are motivated, the motivated Mumford–Tate conjecture 7.3 holds, and the André motive is abelian. This study was conducted under the conditions of Nineveh Governorate, Iraq on the nature of the inheritance of some growth traits and the yield of four varieties of remnants viz., Aguadulce, Habas, Monarch and Rico, under the influence of two planting dates during the autumn growth season during 2019-20 at College of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Mosul, Iraq. Aguadulce variety showed it's significant superiority over the rest of the varieties for the green pods yield and seed yield. The first planting date (15th November) significantly outperformed compared to the second planting date (30th November) for the average weight of pods, green pods yield and biological yield. The phenotypic, genotypic and environmental variations were high for the plant height, 100 seed weight, green pods yield, seed yield and biological yield. Broad sense heritability was high for pod length, green pods yield and seed yield, and this was reflected in the high values of the expected genetic advance for the green pods yield and seed yield. Research shows that viewers evaluate politicians more critically after exposure to parody programing. How do viewers evaluate journalistic content when a popular variety program parodies news programing? Analyzing data from a controlled experiment (N = 342; September 2019), the research considers the added effect of exposure to parody from the US variety show, Saturday Night Live (SNL), on evaluations of The View, focusing on assessments of the political talk program's perceived entertainment value, perceived informativeness, and appropriateness as a source of political news. The results suggest that being parodied is not the sincerest form of flattery for political talk programing but rather, exposure to SNL parody primes participants to rate The View as less entertaining, informative, and appropriate as a source of political news. The added effect of viewing original content from The View directly followed by SNL parody is minimal when compared against exposure to SNL alone. The intertextual take or affective context effect on The View that results from exposure to SNL parody is discussed along with the reality that rather than act as simply comic relief, satire may actually be doing more to engage viewers in a more thoughtful assessment of contemporary journalism and political talk programing. Iturin A with cyclic peptide and fatty acid chain isolated from Bacillus subtilis fermentation shows a variety of biological activities. Among them, the anticancer activity attracted much attention. However, the molecular mechanism of its inhibitory effect on hepatocellular carcinoma was still unclear. Thus its effect on hepatocellular carcinoma was tested in this research. It was found that iturin A could enter HepG2 cells immediately and cause reactive oxygen species burst, disrupt cell cycle and induce apoptosis, paraptosis and autophagy in vitro. The iturin A without fatty acid chain showed no antitumor activity. Amphiphilic is critical to the activity of iturin A. The anticancer activity of iturin A to hepatocellular carcinoma was also verified in mice models carrying xenograft tumors constructed by HepG2 cells. At a dosage of 3 mg/kg/day, iturin A significantly inhibited the further increase of the tumor weight by 58.55%, and reduced the expression of Ki67 in tumor. In the tumor treated with iturin A, lymphocyte infiltration was found, and the expressions of TGF-β1and PD-L1 were decreased, which indicated that the tumor immune microenvironment was improved. Besides, iturin A showed no significant harm on the health of mice except slight disturbance of liver function. These results suggested that iturin A had significant antitumor effect in vitro and vivo, and provide a basis for the application of iturin A as anticancer agent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the growing role of think tank experts in Chinese media coverage on international issues and determines the degree to which voices in this spectrum diverge from each other as well as the official line espoused by China's central media organs. It combines a large-sample sentiment analysis of commentaries published by three major institutes that have developed significant public profiles with an in-depth discussion of selected pieces written by especially prolific experts. Based on the results, I argue that Chinese expert commenters sometimes enrich media coverage and show a substantial variety in opinions among them, but prevailing political constraints, skewed incentives, and a slanted media environment keep them from realizing their full potential as public intellectuals. We present a novel temporally coherent stylized rendering technique working entirely at the compositing stage. We first generate a distribution of 3D anchor points using an implicit grid based on the local object positions stored in a G‐buffer, hence following object motion. We then draw splats in screen space anchored to these points so as to be motion coherent. To increase the perceived flatness of the style, we adjust the anchor points density using a fractalization mechanism. Sudden changes are prevented by controlling the anchor points opacity and introducing a new order‐independent blending function. We demonstrate the versatility of our method by showing a large variety of styles thanks to the freedom offered by the splats content and their attributes that can be controlled by any G‐buffer. Complex-valued quadratic maps either converge to fixed points, enter into periodic cycles, show aperiodic behavior, or diverge to infinity. Which of these scenarios takes place depends on the map's complex-valued parameter c and the initial conditions. The Mandelbrot set is defined by the set of c values for which the map remains bounded when initiated at the origin of the complex plane. In this study, we analyze the dynamics of a coupled network of two pairs of two quadratic maps in dependence on the parameter c. Across the four maps, c is kept the same whereby the maps are identical. In analogy to the behavior of individual maps, the network iterates either diverge to infinity or remain bounded. The bounded solutions settle into different stable states, including full synchronization and desynchronization of all maps. Furthermore, symmetric partially synchronized states of within-pair synchronization and across-pair synchronization as well as a symmetry broken chimera state are found. The boundaries between bounded and divergent solutions in the domain of c are fractals showing a rich variety of intriguingly esthetic patterns. Moreover, the set of bounded solutions is divided into countless subsets throughout all length scales in the complex plane. • Conformism affects intrinsic demands for products. • Lower conformism reduces demand for each variety. • Lower conformism forces firms with the lower demand and quality to exit. • Lower conformism raises average quality and diminishes product diversity. • The home consumption bias is amplified with a lower degree of conformism. This paper discusses the effect of conformism on the demand for products that differ in quality and studies its implications for firm selection, entry, average quality, and trade patterns. Demand for each variety is shown to fall when consumers have a lower degree of conformism or when the distribution of conformism becomes more concentrated. This induces firms facing lower demand and of lower quality to exit the market, which raises average quality and diminishes product diversity. In an international trade context, home consumption bias is amplified when there is a lower degree of conformism. The Japanese all-female musical theater company, Takarazuka Revue, uses stylized performance patterns (kata) to depict gender and character onstage. This artificial method, descended from Japan's all-male Kabuki theater, differs from the assumed realism of contemporary Broadway method acting. Through a study of Takarazuka Revue's adaptation of the Hollywood film Ocean's 11, this article argues that Takarazuka Revue's performance method complements the inherent artificiality of musical theater song and dance and encourages the creation of new works that expand the traditions of the early to mid-twentieth-century Broadway musical. Key-value store based on a log-structured merge-tree (LSM-tree) is preferable to hash-based key-value store, because an LSM-tree can support a wider variety of operations and show better performance, especially for writes. However, LSM-tree is difficult to implement in the resource constrained environment of a key-value SSD (KV-SSD), and, consequently, KV-SSDs typically use hash-based schemes. We present PinK, a design and implementation of an LSM-tree-based KV-SSD, which compared to a hash-based KV-SSD, reduces 99th percentile tail latency by 73%, improves average read latency by 42%, and shows 37% higher throughput. The key idea in improving the performance of an LSM-tree in a resource constrained environment is to avoid the use of Bloom filters and instead, use a small amount of DRAM to keep/pin the top levels of the LSM-tree. We also find that PinK is able to provide a flexible design space for a wide range of KV workloads by leveraging the read-write tradeoff in LSM-trees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay focuses on Gadda's readings dedicated to pre-Freudian psychology, particularly Ribot's and Fechner's studies. The main objective of this work is to re-appraise Gadda's background in order to re-evaluate his theory of the prose, from the Meditazione until the end of the 1940s (the essay "Psicanalisi e letteratura" and the Pasticciaccio). The methodology followed is two-folded: from an analytical point of view, the essay will evaluate the psychological readings of Gadda; from the interpretative point of view, these readings will be evaluated in the light of Gadda's theory of the prose. The hypothesis of the essay is that Gadda's literature is based on a mutual relationship between physical and inner world that we can also find in Fechner and in the authors of the Revue Philosophique, as well as in Aristotle, Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant and Freud.
