Current understandings of the archaeology of second-millennium B.C.E. central western Anatolia are enriched by ongoing research at Kaymakci, located in the Marmara Lake basin of the middle Gediz River valley in western Turkey. Discovered during regional survey in 2001, the site offers a critical node of exploration for understanding a previously unexamined period in a well-traversed geography thought to be the core of the Late Bronze Age Seha River Land known from I finite texts. Here we present results from the first three seasons of excavation on the citadel of Kaymakci plus a study season (2014-2017), introducing the site's chronology, historical and regional context, and significance through presentation of excavation areas as well as material and subsistence economies. Mining is one of the key industries in the world and mine water pollution is a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems. Historical monitoring data on the pollution history and impacts in aquatic ecosystems, however, are rarely available, so paleolimnological methods are required to explore the consequences of past pollution. We studied the history of cladoceran community dynamics in Lake Kirkkojarvi, southern Finland, including the periods before, during and after mining. We analyzed the geochemical composition and cladoceran subfossil remains in a Pb-210-dated sediment core to evaluate the magnitude, rate, and direction of cladoceran community changes through time. The cladoceran community was altered significantly by mining activity that occurred during the mid-twentieth century. During more recent times, however, eutrophication effects have overridden the impacts of mining. After mining ceased, the cladoceran community underwent an abrupt regime shift towards taxa that reflect more eutrophic conditions. This change was caused by intensive farming activity and fertilizer use over the past few decades. The recent history of Lake Kirkkojarvi is a textbook example of a regime shift triggered by multiple human-caused stressors. Our findings also highlight the utility of cladocerans as bio-indicators in pollution research and illustrate the sensitivity of aquatic ecosystems to anthropogenic modification.

Cet essai aborde une thématique dont les premières approches sont intervenues voici près d’un siècle, et qu’un récent colloque vient de remettre à l’ordre du jour. Les publications advenues dans l’intervalle en avaient fourni beaucoup d’éclairages ponctuels, mais en ne tentant que rarement de donner une vision synthétique du phénomène. Sans prétendre à l’exhaustivité, on s’attache ici à distinguer trois orientations majeures : il s’agit d’abord d’envisager ce qui, dans la production médiévale, témoigne d’une conscience de l’histoire ancienne et de la survie de valeurs culturelles fondamentales ; ce sont ensuite les attitudes des hommes du Moyen Âge envers les vestiges matériels de l’Antiquité qui se trouvent évoqués ; enfin, on s’intéresse aux impacts de ce legs sur la création aux temps considérés. Il s’en dégage, au-delà des nuances à apporter aux théories qui privilégiaient de manière excessive la « renaissance » carolingienne et celle des xiie-xiiie siècles, la notion d’un ascendant à peu près continu de l’héritage antique ; cela sous des formes variables, certes, et parfois en alternance d’un milieu à l’autre. Mais la reconnaissance de cette réalité s’avère bien essentielle pour la juste appréhension de l’art d’une période trop longtemps perçue comme en rupture avec les idéaux du classicisme. This essay explores a theme addressed from a variety of different standpoints for almost a century, and which a recent conference has brought to the forefront of current academic debate. Work published subsequently has shed valuable new light on specific aspects of the question, but there has so far been no attempt to provide a synthetic overview. While not claiming to be exhaustive, the present study identifies three main areas of enquiry: first, the evocation of those aspects of medieval artistic production testifying to an awareness of ancient history and the survival of the fundamental cultural values of Antiquity; second, medieval attitudes to the physical vestiges of the Antique world; and third, the impact of the legacy of classical Antiquity on the creative life of the period. What emerges – above and beyond the necessary qualification of theories according excessive importance to the Carolingian « renaissance » and the renaissance of the 12th and 13th centuries – is the notion of a more or less continuous ascendance of the heritage of Antiquity, albeit in varying forms, and often alternating between one milieu and another. The acknowledgment of this is essential to a correct understanding of the art of a period which has for too long been perceived as the product of a complete break with classical ideals. Der Aufsatz greift eine Thematik auf, die bereits vor fast hundert Jahren in den Blick genommen wurde, nun aber dank eines kürzlich abgehaltenen Kolloquiums unter neuen Gesichtspunkten betrachtet werden kann. Die in der Zwischenzeit erschienenen Veröffentlichungen haben zahlreiche punktuelle Klärungen erbracht, allerdings nur selten eine zusammenfassende Sicht auf dieses Phänomen geboten. Ohne Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit wird hier der Versuch unternommen, drei wesentliche Fragestellungen innerhalb der Forschung zu unterscheiden: zum einen geht es darum zu untersuchen, was in der mittelalterlichen Produktion auf ein Bewusstsein für die Geschichte des Altertums und das Überdauern von fundamentalen kulturellen Werten verweist; zum anderen wird die Haltung der Menschen im Mittelalter gegenüber den sichtbaren materiellen Resten der Antike untersucht; und schließlich interessiert man sich für den Einfluß dieses Erbes auf das Kunstschaffen in dem behandelten Zeitraum. Dieser Ansatz führt nicht nur zur Differenzierung jener Theorien, die in ganz einseitiger Weise die karolingische « Renaissance » und jene « Renaissancen » des 12. und 13. Jhs. betonten. Er bestärkt vielmehr die Auffassung, daß die Bedeutung des antiken Erbes fast stetig zu genommen hat, wenn auch in unterschiedlicher Form und manchmal von einem Gebiet zum anderen wechselnd. Die Anerkennung dieser Tatsache ist von grundsätzlicher Wichtigkeit, um die Kunst einer Zeit gerechter einschätzen zu können, bei zu lange nur der vermeintliche Bruch mit den Idealen der Klassik wahrgenommen wurde. Questo saggio affronta un tema che ha cominciato ad essere preso in esame circa un secolo fa e che un recente convegno ha messo nuovamente all’ordine del giorno. Le pubblicazioni edite in questi anni, pur offrendo molti chiarimenti puntuali, hanno però raramente fornito una visione sintetica del fenomeno. Senza aver la pretesa di essere esaustivi, si cerca qui di specificare tre orientamenti più rilevanti: in primo luogo si tratta di considerare ciò che, nella produzione medievale, testimonia di una coscienza della storia antica e della sopravvivenza di valori culturali fondamentali; in secondo luogo si propone di richiamare all’attenzione l’atteggiamento dell’uomo del medioevo nei confronti dei resti dell’Antichità; ci si interessa infine all’impatto provocato da quest’eredità sulla creazione artistica nel periodo preso in esame. Ne emerge, nonostante sia necessario mitigare le teorie che hanno privilegiato in maniera eccessiva la “rinascita” carolingia e quella del XII-XIII secolo, la nozione di un ascendente quasi ininterrotto dell’eredità antica; tutto ciò, certo, sotto forme mutevoli e spesso in maniera discontinua da un ambiente all’altro. Il riconoscimento di questa realtà si rivela tuttavia essenziale per la giusta comprensione dell’arte di un periodo che è stato troppo a lungo considerato in rottura con gli ideali del classicismo. Este ensayo aborda una temática cuyos primeros enfoques se produjeron hace casi un siglo, y que un coloquio reciente acaba de volver a poner al orden del día. Las publicaciones ocurridas entretanto habían proporcionado muchos puntos de vista específicos, pero escasas veces intentaban dar una visión sintética del fenómeno. Sin pretender a la exhaustividad, se procura aquí distinguir tres orientaciones principales : se trata primero de contemplar lo que, dentro de la producción medieval, da prueba de una conciencia de la historia antigua y la supervivencia de valores culturales fundamentales ; a continuación son las actitudes de los hombres de la Edad media hacia los vestigios materiales de la Antigüedad las que se mencionan ; por último, el ensayo se interesa por los impactos de esta herencia sobre la creación de dicha época. Más allá de los matices que aplicar a las teorías que favorecían de manera excesiva el « renacimiento » carolingio y el de los siglos XII y XIII, se destaca de ello el concepto de un ascendiente más o menos continuo de la herencia clásica ; eso bajo formas variables, cierto es, y a veces en alternancia de un medio al otro. Pero el reconocimiento de esta realidad bien resulta esencial para la justa aprehensión del arte de un período que durante demasiado tiempo fue percibido como en ruptura con los ideales del clasicismo.

Deux livres qui viennent de paraître à trois ans d’intervalle contribuent à renouveler notre intelligence de la relation au passé, et particulièrement aux vestiges des architectures anciennes, des hommes du Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance. Crustacean community structure and dynamics are very well studied in lakes, rivers and oceanic systems but wetlands, where moisture conditions fluctuate, have not received equal attention in research. For example, cladoceran communities in peatland systems in the subarctic region have not been fully investigated. We used paleolimnological and paleoecological methods to study plant and cladoceran assemblages and the community dynamics in two subarctic peatlands, which differ in their hydrological characteristics. At the first site, Iitto, river floods introduce planktonic species to fen pools and the steep topography of the catchment induces rapid but relatively short flooding periods. Fluctuating environmental conditions result in a high amount of cladoceran resting stages in the samples. At the other site, Kaamanen, the cladoceran assemblage goes through clear directional changes, which could be attributed to changes in fen hydrology and ultimately to climatic changes during the past two millennia.

Sergio Raimondi’s Civil poetry (2001) proposes a new articulation of the public/ private distinction: the attention paid to domestic situations fosters a way of looking at social phenomena that transforms rather ordinary or trivial circumstances into small illuminations. This article intends to analyze the way in which Raimondi uses both urban cartography (railroad lines, warehouses and factories, worn-out walls…) and inscriptions that can be still found in public spaces of a frozen-in-time Bahia Blanca (remainders of street signs, advertisements, library cards…) to weave an intimate space in texts that entwine these “common places” with more erudite or scholar readings. The idea is to fathom the way in which Raimondi “reads”, in his own personal way, an aged urban scene while proposing a retrospective regard on the whole progress of urbanization and, at the same time, suggests a critical regard on the present of enunciation. It is through the deciphering of these traces and residues from the past, as well as the unraveling of multiple layers of urban cartography, that his poetry reveals itself as a means of resistance, inasmuch as his “civil poetry” functions both as an archive for collective memory and as a powerful protest against the ravages of post-industrial society, in particular economic neoliberalism policies in place during the 1990’s., En su poemario Poesía civil (2001), Sergio Raimondi plantea una nueva articulación entre lo público y lo privado: a través de una mirada detallista y doméstica de lo social, transforma las circunstancias más banales o microscópicas de la vida cotidiana en pequeñas iluminaciones. La propuesta consiste en analizar el modo en que Raimondi se sirve tanto de la cartografía urbana (vías de ferrocarril, fábricas, muros desgastados…) como de las inscripciones de los espacios públicos de una Bahía Blanca que parece como detenida en el tiempo (restos de carteles, afiches publicitarios, carnets de biblioteca…) para tejer un espacio íntimo en textos que enlazan estos “lugares comunes” con lecturas eruditas. Se intentará desentrañar el modo en que, a través de una mirada personal, Raimondi “lee” una envejecida trama urbana para proponer simultáneamente una mirada retrospectiva sobre el avance de la urbanización y una mirada crítica sobre el presente de su escritura y construye, a través de las huellas y residuos del pasado y de las capas del tejido urbano que esta misma mirada va revelando, una poesía “de resistencia”; una “poesía civil” que funciona a la vez como archivo de la memoria colectiva y como potente denuncia de los estragos de la modernidad postindustrial, en particular del neoliberalismo económico de los años noventa.

Artykuł podejmuje dyskusję z dwoma najważniejszymi modelami pamięci o polskim teatrze: paradygmatem romantycznym uniwersalizującym polską peryferyjność, zaproponowanym przez Leszka Kolankiewicza w Dziadach. Teatrze święta zmarłych (1999) oraz modelem opartym na ustanowieniu równoległości między nowoczesnością a Zagładą, przedstawionym przez Grzegorza Niziołka w Polskim teatrze Zagłady (2013). Wychodząc z założenia, że swoista rywalizacja obu wielkich narracji o polskiej wspólnocie teatralnej prowadzi do przesłaniania innych doświadczeń historycznych, autorka proponuje analizę obecności I wojny światowej w polskiej pamięci kulturowej poprzez uwypuklenie znaczenia materialności rzekomo efemerycznego ciała. Negocjowanie znaczeń między historiozofią teatralną, antropologią i współczesnymi teoriami performatywności archiwów prowadzi autorkę do przedstawienia koncepcji opartej nie na paradygmacie świadectwa, lecz dowodu – resztki, śladu, pozostałości. Dla tej koncepcji kluczowe okazują się pozostające ze sobą w głębokiej korelacji pojęcia: ciało-archiwum i nekroperformans jako kategorie problematyzujące również stosunek badacza do materii archiwalnej, określające jednocześnie konkretną strategię i praktykę pisania historii kultury. Sajewska enters into dialogue with the two principal models of memory in Polish theatre: the Romantic paradigm that universalizes Poland’s peripheral status a proposed by Leszek Kolankiewicz in Dziady: Teatr święta zmarłych [Dziady: Theatre of the Feast of the Dead, 1999], and the model based on the parallelism between modernity and the Holocaust as established by Grzegorz Niziołek in Polski teatr zagłady [Polish Holocaust Theatre, 2013]. According to Sajewska, the rivalry between these two grand narratives about the Polish theatre community obscures other historical experiences. Her analysis of the presence of World War I in Polish cultural memory emphasizes the materiality of the allegedly ephemeral body. Negotiating meanings between theatrical historiosophy, anthropology and contemporary theories on the performativity of archives, Sajewska proposes a concept that draws not on the paradigm of the testimony but that of evidence – remains, traces, vestiges. Key to these concepts are the correlated notions of the body-archive and necro-performance. These notions problematize the relationship between the researcher and the archive material, while also suggesting a concrete strategy and practice of writing cultural history.

Given the paucity of archaeogenetic data available for medieval European populations in comparison to other historical periods, the genetic landscape of this age appears as a puzzle of dispersed, small, known pieces. In particular, Southeastern Europe has been scarcely investigated to date. In this paper, we report the study of mitochondrial DNA in 10th century AD human samples from Capidava necropolis, located in Dobruja (Southeastern Romania, Southeastern Europe). This geographical region is particularly interesting because of the extensive population flux following diverse migration routes, and the complex interactions between distinct population groups during the medieval period. We successfully amplified and typed the mitochondrial control region of 10 individuals. For five of them, we also reconstructed the complete mitochondrial genomes using hybridization-based DNA capture combined with Next Generation Sequencing. We have portrayed the genetic structure of the Capidava medieval population, represented by 10 individuals displaying 8 haplotypes (U5a1c2a, V1a, R0a2'3, H1, U3a, N9a9, H5e1a1, and H13a1a3). Remarkable for this site is the presence of both Central Asiatic (N9a) and common European mtDNA haplotypes, establishing Capidava as a point of convergence between East and West. The distribution of mtDNA lineages in the necropolis highlighted the existence of two groups of two individuals with close maternal relationships as they share the same haplotypes. We also sketch, using comparative statistical and population genetic analyses, the genetic relationships between the investigated dataset and other medieval and modern Eurasian populations. Archaeological evidence from the submerged North Sea landscape has established the rich diversity of Pleistocene and Early Holocene ecosystems and their importance to hunter-gatherer subsistence strategies. Comparatively little of this evidence, however, dates to the Late Glacial, the period when Northern Europe was repopulated by colonising foragers. A human parietal bone and a decorated bovid metatarsus recently recovered from the floor of the North Sea have been dated to this crucial transitional period. They are set against the background of significant climatic and environmental changes and a major technological and sociocultural transformation. These discoveries also reaffirm the importance of continental shelves as archaeological archives.

Restaurants to prepare and serve their daily buffet produce large amounts of waste food, that can be used in many ways. With the full utilization of food there are ways to reverse the situation that the country is facing, people starving and tonnes of food being thrown in the garbage. This work aims to show that there are ways to use the food in its totality, by decreasing the impacts that it causes in the environment and and turning it into nutritious food. For that, a research was carried out in a commercial restaurant in the southwestern state of Paraná, in order to monitor the quantity of barks, weeds, stalks and seeds that are discarded for lack of information or training who will manipulate them. For demonstration of complete use, two preparations were developed using food peels that would be discarded, banana peel cake and pineapple peel cake. In order to verify their acceptability, some tasting and evaluation were conducted from the Nutrition and Gastronomy academics of a private College in the southwest of Paraná, where in the evaluative paper, they should indicate if they liked or disliked the cakes and the possible development of the recipe in their daily routine. Both cakes had good acceptance, but with some points of improvement. Los restaurantes, al preparar y servir su buffet diario, generan una gran cantidad de residuos, que pueden gestionarse de varias formas. Con el aprovechamiento integral de los alimentos, es posible revertir la situación que vive el país, con gente pasando hambre y toneladas de alimentos tirados a la basura. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo mostrar que existen formas de aprovechar los alimentos en su totalidad, reduciendo los impactos sobre el medio ambiente y transformándolos en alimentos nutritivos. Para ello, se realizó una investigación en un restaurante comercial del sudoeste de Paraná con el objetivo de monitorear la cantidad de cascarilla, cascarilla, tallos y semillas que se desechan por falta de información o capacitación de quienes las manipulan. Para demostrar el uso completo, se desarrollaron dos preparaciones utilizando cáscaras de alimentos que se desecharían, siendo la torta de cáscara de plátano y la torta de cáscara de piña. Per questo, è stata condotta una ricerca in un ristorante commerciale nel sud-ovest del Paraná al fine di monitorare la quantità di bucce, bucce interne, steli e semi che vengono scartati per mancanza di informazioni o formazione di coloro che li gestiscono. Entrambe le torte sono state ben accolte, ma con alcuni punti da migliorare. Çalışmada Burdur'un Gölhisar ilçesinde bulunan Kibyra Antik Kentindeki arkeolojik kazılardan ortaya çıkarılan koyun iskeleti kalıntılarının osteometrik olarak incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmada Kibyra Antik Kenti'nin Bouleuterion-Odeion, Stadion, Agora ve Dış Cephe arkeolojik kazılarında ortaya çıkarılan ölçü alınabilir nitelikte toplam 370 adet kemik kalıntısı kullanıldı. Bu kemiklerden osteometrik ölçüler alındı. Ayrıca elde edilen veriler kullanılarak koyunların cidago yüksekliği ve ebatları ile ilgili tahminde bulunuldu. Buna göre Kibyra koyunlarının ortalama cidago yüksekliği 59.8 cm olarak tespit edildi. Sonuç olarak çalışmada elde edilen sayısal verilerin Ülkemizde sınırlı sayıdaki zooarkeolojik çalışmalara katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir. The aim of the study was to investigate the osteometric investigation of the remains of sheep skeleton from archaeological excavations in Kibyra Antique City located in Golhisar district of Burdur. In the study, the remains of the totally measurable 370 bones revealed in the archaeological excavations of Bouleuterion-Odeion, Stadion, Agora and Facade of the ancient city of Kibyra were used. The osteometric measuraments were obtained from these bones. Moreover, the shoulder height and dimensions were estimated by using obtained data. According to this, the average of shoulder height of Kibyra sheep was determined as 59.8 cm.
