This research aims to analyze the role of Sharia economics in alleviating poverty in Indonesia. The method used in this research is a literature study, which is a series of activities relating to methods of collecting library data, reading and taking notes, as well as processing reading material into research data. Some of the literature that researchers use as data sources are books, journal articles, and news related to the role of Sharia economics in reducing poverty rates in Indonesia. One of the goals of religion is to encourage people from being left behind economically. Poverty is a serious problem that must be sought immediately for a solution because it can have very dangerous impacts, including disturbing one's faith or it could even disappear and that person becomes a disbeliever. The potential for ziswaf in Indonesia is extraordinary. If it can be managed professionally, it will have an impact on the welfare of society. How to overcome poverty can be done with various steps and strategies. The thing that must be done from the start to overcome the poverty that grips our society is to create an economic order that allows for a fair distribution system to be born, encouraging the birth of concern from people who have (aghniya') toward the needy, poor, dhu'afa' and mustard 'affine. This study identifies the effectiveness of South Sumatra Provincial Government's financial assistance budget transfer on Poverty Levels and the Human Development Index. This fiscal transfer from the Provincial Government is to assist and support the Regency/City Governments' budget for their development program. The problem of this study is to identify the effect of this fiscal transfer to support the Regency/City Government in reducing poverty level and increasing Human Development Index. A coefficient of determination analysis is applied to assess the effect of the provincial financial assistance to reduce poverty rates and increase the Human Development Index. Analysis is also conducted to identify opportunities for the implementation of Ecological Fiscal Transfer model for the allocation of financial assistance budget. The study analyzes data from the Regional Budget of South Sumatra Province for the last 10 years. Coefficient of determination analysis shows that the fiscal transfer in the form of financial assistance fails to explain the variation of poverty rates and the Human Development Index in the area. The United Nations claims that education is a crucial element in reducing poverty rates in any country if it is accessible, adaptable, acceptable, and affordable; known as the 4A's of education, which are considered within the national education policy. This paper analyzes the effect of the 4A's of education on multidimensional moderate-income poverty and extreme income poverty in Mexico in the years 2010 and 2020. This is achieved with the analysis of microdata from the Module of Socioeconomic Conditions of the National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure (MCS - ENIGH) 2010 and 2020 and with dichotomous logit models. The results indicate that the 4A's have a greater effect on the reduction of multidimensional extreme income poverty than on moderate, even over different periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we evaluate the role of the high speed railway (HSR) project, one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects in the world, in poverty alleviation in China. This study combines county-level data from the China County Statistical Yearbooks with HSR data from the China Railway Yearbooks. The method of difference-in-differences is applied to examine the HSR connection effect on government expenditure in poverty alleviation across Chinese poverty counties over the period of 2010-2018. The results show that the HSR connection has a significantly positive impact on reducing government expenditure in poverty alleviation. Our results, which are based on alternative measurement of poverty alleviation and possible bias arising from endogeneity issue, are robust. This paper highlights that HSR can help achieve accessibility of rural area and poverty alleviation simultaneously. A growing body of literature suggests that access to electricity has a positive impact on household's living standards and social welfare. This paper sheds new light on this discussion. Using expenditure dependent equivalence scales, this paper examines the impact of electricity access on food consumption economies of scale (FCES) and thereby the poverty measurements of households with and without access to electricity in Sri Lanka during 1990-2016. Results indicate that a low-income household of four adults with access to electricity spends about 20% less on food compared to a similar household without access to electricity. The results also reveal that although the incorporation of FCES into poverty measurements reduces the overall poverty levels considerably, the reduction in poverty levels is about 1.2% higher for households with electricity at the national level. Regional poverty is one of the most serious challenges facing the world today. Poverty, antipoverty, and poverty alleviation are the focus of the attention of scholars and the public. This paper takes China's counties as the research unit, selects the influencing factors of poverty from natural and socio-economic factors, establishes an evaluation index system, simulates the natural poverty index and socio-economic poverty eradication index of each county, and clarifies the distribution characteristics of spatial poverty using GIS spatial analysis and BP artificial neural network. The results indicate that natural factors are the main cause of poverty in Chinese counties, with 710 counties having a high natural poverty index, accounting for nearly 30% of the total number of counties in the country. The national county-level natural poverty index shows a clear strip distribution pattern along latitude and longitude, with a strip distribution from north to south and from west to east; socio-economic factors have played a certain role in poverty alleviation, with as many as 1521 counties with low socio-economic poverty alleviation indices, accounting for approximately 64% of the total number of counties in the country. The spatial distribution of the county-level socio-economic poverty alleviation index is relatively fragmented. Through spatial scanning statistics, a total of 44 county poverty pressure index risk clusters reached a statistical significance level, involving 243 counties and districts. In poverty reduction practice, the internal counties and districts of contiguous poverty-stricken areas should strengthen cooperation and exchange. In the process of poverty alleviation and development, targeted poverty alleviation and economic development should be carried out based on the poverty-dominant type and self-development ability of the county, in order to improve efficiency. Regions that are relatively prosperous and have taken the lead in poverty reduction should play a leading and exemplary role in strengthening the radiation power of regional central cities. The prominent feature of this study is the comprehensive utilization of multisource data and the use of new spatial analysis methods (flexible spatial scanning method is widely used in the field of infectious disease prevention and control research). By constructing a multidimensional poverty measurement system that includes natural and social factors, it distinguishes the differences between the factors that cause poverty and the factors that eliminate poverty in regional poverty. Background: The accessibility of pharmacies has been associated with overall health and wellbeing. Past studies have suggested that low income and racial minority communities are underserved by pharmacies. However, the literature is inconsistent in finding links between area-level income or racial and ethnic composition and access to pharmacies. Here we aim to assess area-level spatial access to pharmacies across New York State (NYS), hypothesizing that Census Tracts with higher poverty rates and higher percentages of Black and Hispanic residents would have lower spatial access. Methods: The population weighted mean shortest road network distance (PWMSD) to a pharmacy in 2018 was calculated for each Census Tract in NYS. This statistic was calculated from the shortest road network distance to a pharmacy from the centroid of each Census block within a tract, with the mean across census blocks weighted by the population of the census block. Cross-sectional analyses were conducted to assess links between Tract-level socio demographic characteristics and Tract-level PWMSD to a pharmacy. Results: Overall the mean PWMSD to a pharmacy across Census tracts in NYS was 2.07 Km (SD = 3.35, median 0.85 Km). Shorter PWMSD to a pharmacy were associated with higher Tract-level % poverty, % Black/African American (AA) residents, and % Hispanic/Latino residents and with lower Tract-level % of residents with a college degree. Compared to tracts in the lowest quartile of % Black/AA residents, tracts in the highest quartile had a 70.7% (95% CI 68.3–72.9%) shorter PWMSD to a pharmacy. Similarly, tracts in the highest quartile of % poverty had a 61.3% (95% CI 58.0-64.4%) shorter PWMSD to a pharmacy than tracts in the lowest quartile. Conclusion: The analyses show that tracts in NYS with higher racial and ethnic minority populations and higher poverty rates have higher spatial access to pharmacies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the causal impact of export growth on Chilean local economic development during 2000-2006 by exploiting spatial and temporal variations in local exposure stemming from the interaction of past differences in industry specialization across local labor markets and the evolution of tariffs cuts and exports across industries. We find that growing exports implied a significant reduction in labor informality and labor income gains in more exposed local markets, driven by job creation and wage growth in the formal sector. Reducing multidimensional relative poverty is one of the important issues in the current global poverty governance field. This article takes 12 ethnic regions in China as the research object and constructs a multidimensional relative poverty measurement system. The calculated multidimensional relative poverty index is decomposed according to provinces, cities, dimensions, and indicators. Then, the Dagum Gini coefficient and convergence analysis are used to analyze spatiotemporal heterogeneity and convergence characteristics. The results show that the multi-dimensional relative poverty situation of various provinces in ethnic minority areas has improved from 2012 to 2021, among which Tibet province is the most serious and Shaanxi is the best. According to the analysis of convergence, it was observed that there is no σ-convergence of multidimensional relative poverty in ethnic areas in general, and there is absolute β-convergence in general and in the southwest and northwest regions, and there is no absolute β-convergence in the northeast region. Based on this, policy recommendations for reducing multidimensional relative poverty are proposed at the end of the article. This study aims to comprehensively examine the determinants of household poverty in Brazil, placing a specific emphasis on the heads of households as the primary unit of analysis. Household poverty is a critical and multifaceted issue in developing countries, a reality that holds true for Brazil as well. Understanding the intricate web of factors that contribute to household poverty is of paramount importance to policymakers, researchers, and advocates dedicated to poverty alleviation and socioeconomic development. Household poverty remains a persistent challenge in Brazil, with far-reaching social and economic consequences. To address this issue effectively, it is essential to identify the factors that contribute to poverty among households, particularly those led by individuals who are the primary income earners. These households often face unique economic and social challenges that demand targeted interventions. To analyze household poverty determinants, this study utilizes data from the "Pesquisa Nacional por Amostras de Domicílios Contínua" (Continuous National Household Sample Survey) (PNADC). The dataset provides comprehensive information on the individual characteristics of the household head and household-level attributes, offering a nuanced view of the factors at play. A probit model is employed to estimate the probability of a household head experiencing poverty, allowing for a examination of various factors. The research findings reveal several significant determinants of household poverty in Brazil. Firstly, households led by men are found to be less likely to be in a situation of poverty, shedding light on gender-related disparities in income and opportunities. Secondly, households with heads who have attained higher levels of education exhibit a lower probability of being in poverty, underscoring the importance of education as a pathway out of poverty. Moreover, urban households are found to be less prone to poverty compared to their rural counterparts, since households led by individuals who work in agricultural-related activities are more likely to experience poverty. This emphasizes the need for targeted rural development strategies. Additionally, households located in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil face a higher likelihood of poverty, possibly due to regional economic disparities that require specific policy attention. These findings have important policy implications for poverty alleviation efforts in Brazil. Policymakers should consider targeted interventions that focus on improving access to education, particularly in regions with higher poverty rates, as education is a powerful tool for poverty reduction. Efforts to promote gender equality and enhance economic opportunities in rural areas are also essential to address the diverse causes of poverty. Additionally, regional disparities in poverty should be addressed through comprehensive regional development initiatives that take into account the unique challenges faced by different areas of the country. Our results also highlight the importance of community-specific social programs, including conditional-cash transfers and incentives for childhood education, which can play a pivotal role in breaking the cycle of poverty in Brazil's diverse communities. The purpose of this paper is to provide an update on the development of the long‐term relative poverty rate in Europe. We use European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions data (EU‐SILC) for 26 European countries between 2009 and 2018. In addition to describing the development of long‐term poverty, we also analyse the drivers of poverty on the country level via fixed effects panel regression analysis. We are particularly interested in how economic growth, employment rates, social expenditure, and short‐term poverty rates are related to long‐term poverty. Overall, the results show that long‐term poverty has increased in 13 out of 26 countries, but was unchanged or decreased in 13 countries. Gross domestic product growth is not related to the development of long‐term poverty. However, we find that male employment and social welfare expenditure reduce poverty rates. Furthermore, short‐term poverty is negatively associated with long‐term poverty. Hence, short‐term poverty and long‐term poverty rather substitute than complement each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spain has one of the highest in-work poverty rates in Europe and a high degree of job instability. Reducing in-work poverty requires an understanding of the entry and exit mechanisms specific to this situation, as well as the protective and risk factors involved. Based on data from the Spanish Living Conditions Survey (2017- 2020), this paper shows that households with children are more likely to experience in-work poverty, and that in-work poverty is more persistent in these cases. That said, entry into and exit from poverty is mostly associated with employment-related events, and to a lesser extent, with changes in household composition. The concentration of in-work poverty in households with children results from a process of erosion and accumulated risks, whereby wage losses have a greater effect on the risk of poverty, and the social protection system appears to be insufficient. This article examines the social disparities and resource allocation challenges faced by rural and urban communities in the United States, particularly in the context of emergency management and healthcare. It presents two perspectives on whether rural or urban communities should receive more funding for emergency management. The policy point argues that rural communities should receive more funding due to their lack of resources, limited healthcare access, and higher vulnerability during disasters. The policy counterpoint argues that urban communities, with their larger populations, also require significant funding for emergency management programs. The article provides case studies and examples to support both perspectives. It also discusses the disparities in healthcare resource allocation between urban and rural communities, highlighting the need for more resources in urban areas to meet the healthcare needs of diverse populations, while also addressing the challenges faced by rural communities such as limited access to healthcare facilities. The article suggests solutions such as telehealth services for rural areas and community-led economic initiatives for urban areas to address these disparities. It emphasizes the importance of collaboration between government agencies, healthcare providers, and community organizations to ensure equitable access to resources and services for all populations. The article analyzes the relationship between macroeconomics and (labor) poverty between 2005 and 2022. Three scenarios were considered: 1) income, inflation, interest rate and labor poverty, while scenarios 2) and 3) considered labor income and inflation of lines of poverty and extreme poverty in relation to income, respectively. An impulse response function and its cointegrating relationship are estimated for each scenario. The results suggest that the interest rate does indeed have an impact on poverty: a monetary policy that prioritizes low and stable inflation corresponds to a lower poverty rate, as well as higher income. It is hardly contentious to assert that measuring concepts is an important aspect of scientific and practical research. However, there seems to be some degree of confusion nowadays regarding what is meant by measurement in poverty research. It is obvious from these exchanges that different notions of central terms in the debate are being held (reliability, validity, measurement error, measurement model) to the detriment of common understanding. To move the literature forward, this paper falls back on the epistemology of measurement to bridge the apparent conceptual gap in the debate. This article invites more discussion and constructive exchange of views regarding the meaning of measurement in poverty research and how to assess the relative success of different efforts. This paper provides evidence on the effect of local prescription opioid use on academic achievement of 3rd–8th graders between 2009 and 2018. Using county fixed effects models, I find that when counties have higher levels of prescription opioid use, students score lower on standardized assessments two to three years later, with variation by student subgroups and magnitudes comparable to effective interventions. I find the largest magnitudes in counties with higher poverty rates and states with below-median state education spending. As test score effects predict adult outcomes, these findings point to economic and public health challenges when affected children become adults. Highlights I examine the relationship between local prescription opioid use and academic achievement of 3rd to 8th graders in Math and English Language Arts (ELA). Using county-fixed effects models, I find that when counties have higher prescription opioid use, lower levels of academic achievement in Math and ELA emerge two to three years later. Among white and economically disadvantaged students, this effect is similar in magnitude to other effective academic interventions and detrimental factors. This brief report provides an overview of the state of families in Vermont. The data used in this report is from the American Community Survey (ACS) conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, Vermont Department of Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among others. Key findings include demographic data on families, including family size, family composition, ethnic and racial diversity, income, and poverty rates. The report also detailed challenges faced by Vermont families and programs offered to help families navigate these challenges. This paper reviews the different approaches and policies that are most used in the literature to measure the level of poverty with tools of fuzzy logic. These policies are based on the integrated measurement method (IM), which combines poverty line methods and unmet basic needs. Community gardens are more popular than ever, yet we know little about how leadership structure and neighborhood characteristics relate to programming. Hence, this paper analyzes how the racial/ethnic backgrounds of the community garden leaders are related to the activities the garden undertakes. What types of initiatives do gardens undertake to reduce food insecurity? The paper analyzes how the location of the garden impacts what it does. The article presents novel findings on the impact of leadership and neighborhood characteristics on community garden operations and outcomes. Hence, the essay examines how the race/ethnicity of garden managers and their sex and neighborhood characteristics, such as poverty rate, household income, and racial composition, are related to garden initiatives. Finally, the paper examines how community gardens responded to increased demands for food and services during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic. We studied 53 community gardens in Michigan from the summer 2020 through the winter 2021. Whites manage 66% (35) of the gardens, while People of Color manage 34% (18). Roughly half of the gardens are managed by males and the remainder by females. The gardens, which lack paid staff, rely heavily on volunteers. Almost 53% of the gardens are in low-income census tracts (with median income of $40,000 or less). During the pandemic, 31% of the gardens reduced their staff, 51.4% had fewer volunteers than in pre-pandemic times, and 51.9% had increased amounts of people seeking food. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Consumption taxes are a policy tool that shape the income distribution and potentially thwart the redistributive goals of social policy. Different household types might be affected differently due to diverging income positions and consumption levels. This study examines the change in poverty across household types when accounting for consumption tax payments. To this end, the study draws on harmonised data from eleven OECD countries in the Luxembourg Income Study (LIS). Implicit indirect tax rates are estimated from national accounts and poverty rates before and after subtracting consumption taxes are investigated. The results indicate significant variation across household types. In most countries, large family and single parent households experience the highest poverty increase. Over the past decades, many European welfare states failed to reduce poverty. We examine two coinciding trends: the inability to lower poverty rates, and the growth of immigrant populations. Immigrants have become the main contributor to population growth in Europe and have higher poverty risks than natives. This contribution quantifies to what extent national poverty rates were driven by population change. We present a Kitagawa–Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition of national poverty rates in 17 western European countries between 2005 and 2019 using EU-SILC data. The effect of shifting EU and non-EU immigrant populations on poverty rates is heterogeneous: while poverty in some countries increased substantially due to compositional changes, for the majority the effect was small or negligible, including in countries with above-average growth of foreign-born populations. Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act envisages livelihood and social security by providing at least 100 days guaranteed wage employment to every rural households whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. In this study, implementing efficiency was compared in different states of India during 2006-07 to 2016-17. The efficiency of states in implementation of the scheme was measured using secondary data with different parameters like number of households provided employment, the number of households who demanded employment, households with total women-person days, the total number of person days of employment generated, total number of completed assets, total expenditure on wages, number of households availed 100 days of employment, total available funds, overall pure efficiencies scores and their ranking was obtained for respective states. The findings revealed the efficiency score of 1 was considered as efficient, which was observed in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Tripura, therefore they were considered as best performing states, whereas Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh, were least performing states as their efficiency score was less than 1. As per census 2011, Kerala and Tamil Nadu states have showed lowest poverty index and high literacy rates which was positive indicator in efficient states. Therefore, implementation of scheme in richer states was efficient. In contrast, Bihar state has showed the highest poverty ratio and low literacy rates among male and female which is negative indicator resulted in poor demand for work, causes the inefficiency in poor implementation of the scheme. Thus, poverty and literacy rates were important factor which plays major role in better implementation of the scheme. Because poverty and literacy rates are vital developmental indicators as they are key variables of measure of development for quality of life, awareness level, skills of people in the society resulted in higher demand for work, as such more and more rural people are expected to exercise their right to work as enshrined in the Act. Poverty, particularly in developing regions, is a complex, multifaceted issue deeply embedded in various interrelated factors. It extends beyond mere financial insufficiency, encompassing limited access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and overall living standards. This study examines both the unidimensional and multidimensional aspects of rural poverty in Suri Sadar Sub-Division, located in Eastern India. For the unidimensional aspect, this study employs the poverty headcount ratio and the Poverty Gap Index to gauge the incidence and intensity of poverty. In contrast, the multidimensional approach utilized three dimensions and 12 indicators to assess the incidence, severity, and multidimensional poverty index utilizing the Alkire–Foster (AF) methodology. The unidimensional analysis, focusing on income and consumption, highlights significant economic disparities, particularly in the western Community Development Blocks, namely, Khoyrasole, Md. Bazar, and Rajnagar. The highest levels of multidimensional poverty are generally consistent with the unidimensional findings, particularly in the western blocks. These results underscore the need for comprehensive poverty reduction strategies that address both economic and broader aspects of poverty. In areas like the western blocks, where both income-based and multidimensional poverty rates are high, strategies should integrate economic development, improved healthcare access, enhanced educational quality, and living standards improvement. Therefore, this study serves not only as an academic endeavor but also as a vital tool for informed policymaking in poverty alleviation, providing planners, administrative officials, and researchers with essential insights to develop effective, localized, and sustainable poverty reduction strategies. Given Canada's increasingly diverse population, a better understanding of the representation of different groups among Canadian workers and their economic characteristics is needed. This study analyzes the diversity, economic characteristics, and retention of workers in Canada's early learning and child care (ELCC) sector. Using census data, diversity characteristics (e.g. sex, visible minority status such as race and ethnicity, language, and activity limitations) were compared between ELCC and non-ELCC workers. The study also examines whether ELCC workers' economic characteristics, such as self-employment rate, full-time work status, employment income, and poverty rates, varied by diversity groups. It then investigates whether diversity characteristics were associated with workers' retention in ELCC occupations. Findings showed an over-representation of women, visible minorities, and non-native speakers of Canadian official languages in the ELCC workforce. Generally, non-White ELCC workers were more likely than their White counterparts to be paid employees, work full-time, and earn less than $40,000 annually. Variations in ELCC workers' economic characteristics and retention rates were also found across visible minority groups. Findings from this study provide greater insight into the representation and retention of different groups within ELCC occupations, which can contribute to higher quality early learning and child care for Canada's multicultural population. Addressing South Asia's poverty, this research presents an exhaustive case study of Pakistan, exploring poverty dynamics at national and provincial levels, emphasizing the urban–rural divide. The study uses the most recent income and expenditure surveys from 2013 and 2015 and applies the Cost of Basic Needs methodology based on strong theoretical and empirical grounds. The research adjusts for price variation within and among provinces. It uses traditional Foster-Greer-Thorbecke measures and innovative measures like the Watts and Sen indices. Findings reveal a poverty decline in Pakistan between 2013 and 2015, with significant provincial variations in this decline. Despite a minor decline in the headcount ratio of the larger provinces, their poverty shares increased in 2013–15, showing a regional convergence trend with growing disparities in poverty headcount and depth. Using indices like Watts and Sen gives a more complete, nuanced poverty understanding, highlighting the need for their adoption alongside traditional measures. Mainstream poverty analysis currently renders certain people and degrees of privation more socially legible than others across high-income countries. This article examines how these hierarchies carry through to and corrupt wider social scientific analysis, inscribing differential value to actors and phenomena in ways that undermine social understanding and explanation. First, conventional approaches to poverty analysis and measurement obscure the de facto prevalence of deep poverty, as well as those most subject to its violence. Second, a growing number of hyper-marginalised groups are missing from population income surveys, undermining the accuracy of (deep) poverty estimates and public understanding of both its determinants and dynamics. Third, the inferential and external validity of income surveys is significantly diminished by problems surrounding data quality and coverage. Attempts to address this have principally focused on improving data quality, but as demonstrated in this article, these strategies exacerbate poor representation of the lowest-income groups in distributional analysis. Much more than merely technical or pragmatic, these are theoretical and normative judgements about who counts in welfare policy and politics. Overall, I demonstrate how current data practices occlude some the most violent forms of denigration and exploitation that structure advanced marginality, particularly the gendered, racialised, bordering and ableist practices underpinning state–citizen dynamics. Focusing principally on the UK context, I argue that the epistemic erasure committed features in and systematises a policy blindness to deep poverty for some of the most marginalised social groups making it harder to evidence its effects and address its causes across high-income countries. Climate change is increasingly impacting both environments and human communities. Coastal regions in Thailand are experiencing more severe impacts, which vary based on the unique physical and socio-economic characteristics of each area. To assess the vulnerability of coastal regions in Thailand, this study focused on two provinces, Nakhon Si Thammarat (NST) and Krabi, each representing distinct coastal environments. NST, situated on the Gulf of Thailand's east coast, has an agriculture-based economy, while Krabi, on the Andaman Sea's west coast, relies heavily on tourism. The study utilized a multi-criteria decision analysis approach (MCDA) and GIS to analyze the Coastal Vulnerability Index at the sub-district level. The results revealed that, although NST was more vulnerable than Krabi to socio-economic factors such as the poverty rate and the number of fishery households, Krabi was much more vulnerable in the physical environment, including wave height, tidal level, coastal erosion, and slope. However, overall, Krabi exhibited high to the highest levels of coastal vulnerability, while NST displayed moderate to high levels. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and government agencies, aiding in the development of strategies to mitigate vulnerability and enhance the quality of life for local residents in both provinces. Household consumption surveys do not typically offer poverty estimates for refugees. We test the performance of a recently developed cross-survey imputation method to estimate poverty for a sample of refugees in Chad, combining survey and administrative data collected by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). We find the imputed poverty rates are not statistically different from the poverty rates obtained directly from the survey consumption data. This result is robust to different model specifications, varying poverty lines, and assumptions of the error terms. Targeting results based on the imputed poverty estimates also outperform common targeting methods, such as proxy means tests and the current targeting method used by humanitarian organizations in Chad. Replicating this approach in at least some of the 122 other countries currently using UNHCR administrative data could help address data gaps and provide much-needed estimates to effectively respond to forcibly displaced crises. Fifty years after Feagin's pioneering 1972 study, we present a systematic review of the measurement of attributions for poverty and economic inequality. We conducted a search for articles published from 1972 to 2023 in APA PsycArticles, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, APA PsycInfo, PSYNDEX Literature with PSYNDEX Tests, and Google Scholar. We used the following English keywords: "poor", "poverty", "inequality", "attribution", and "attributions" and their equivalents in Spanish. Applying our inclusion and exclusion criteria led to a final sample of 74 articles. We report three main findings. First, the majority of studies classify attributions on the dimensions of individualistic vs. structural. Second, there is a clear tendency to measure attributions for domestic poverty without considering supranational factors or poverty as a global challenge. Third, studies focus almost exclusively on poverty rather than (economic) inequality. We identify potential for future development within the literature, namely, from a domestic to a global perspective, from locus to controllability, and from poverty to inequality. In this paper, we develop a three-period gender-based Overlapping Generations (OLG) model of economic growth for Côte d'Ivoire in which life expectancy is endogenized and the rate of change of the poverty rate is linked to the growth rate of output per capita. We then calibrate the model using the country-specific calibration data to illustrate the role of public policies in the model, and its implications for long-term growth, gender equality, and poverty in Côte d'Ivoire. To this end, we discuss three sets of quantitative experiments: broad-based development policies (increase in education spending and infrastructure investment, and governance reform), gender-based policies (reduction in gender bias in the market place, increase in women's bargaining power, and reduction in family bias against girls' education), and a composite reform program (combination of pro-growth, pro-gender policies). Overall, our findings suggest that Côte d'Ivoire could achieve better growth and poverty outcomes if the country could implement a composite reform program that includes comprehensive development and gender-based policies. Our study aims to investigate the effect of government expenditure on the poverty rate and detect the moderating role of the unemployment rate in the functional relationship between the two variables. Using a panel data set of 24 provinces in Indonesia during 2005-2018, we use the dynamic model of the Generalized Methods of Moment to estimate the functional relationships. Our findings discovered that government expenditure on goods, services, and capital significantly reduces poverty. Conversely, grant and social aid expenditures have a positive and significant effect. The unemployment rate substantially increases the poverty rate and moderates the impact of the three types of public spending on the poverty rate. The higher the unemployment rate, the smaller the poverty reduction effect of government expenditure. These findings imply that the government budgetary allocation for a particular spending component should consider the unemployment rate as the primary consideration. We examine the association between woman farmers and community well‐being using U.S. county‐level data. We address modeling uncertainty around three measures of community well‐being by using a spatial Bayesian model averaging approach and find that a higher share of farms operated or owned by women in a county is associated with higher rates of new business formation, longer life expectancies, and lower poverty rates. Since 2017, the existence of 140 BUM Desa in East Sumba Regency has not shown good performance as pillars of the people's economy. This is reflected in the still high poverty rate and weak production sectors which can stimulate village economic growth. The aim of the research is to analyze how much influence interpersonal skills and current skills have on organizational performance through good corporate governance. The research method uses quantitative descriptive analysis techniques based on secondary and primary data obtained through questionnaires with a Likert scale approach. The results of the analysis of 144 respondents in 30 active BUM Desa using SEM analysis and smart pls 4 show that hypothesis H1 is accepted, namely that interpersonal skills have a positive and significant effect on the implementation of good corporate governance with a t-value of 6.678 and a pvalue of 0.000. H2 is accepted, namely that current skills have a positive and significant effect on the implementation of good corporate governance with a t-value of 4.823 and a pvalue of 0.000. H3 is accepted, namely the implementation of good corporate governance has a positive and significant effect on performance with a t-value of 3.986 and a p-value of 0.000. H4 is accepted, namely interpersonal skills have a positive and significant effect on performance with a t-value of 3.665 and a p-value of 0.000. H5 is rejected because it has a tvalue of 0.345 which is smaller than 1.96 and a p-value of 0.730 with a significance of 5%, namely that current skills have no effect on performance. The results of this study recommend the need for concrete efforts to improve the interpersonal abilities and skills of current administrators. Apart from that, it is necessary to better implement the principles of transparency and accountability to improve the performance of BUM Desa by prioritizing the economic independence of local communities. Widely, 12-month or 4-quarter average indicators, such as monetary poverty rates, are computed from repeated cross sections of household surveys and interpreted as annual. This is a valid interpretation only when individuals do not change their status within the year; for instance, those observed as poor in the month they are interviewed stay poor the other 11 months. First, we demonstrate that such misinterpretation affects the calculation of several labor market, inequality, and monetary poverty measures. Then, we propose several methods to accurately annualize sub-annual data. Some methods rely on ancillary questions often included in household surveys while others require econometric techniques such as predictive mean matching. Using data for Colombia, we apply the methods to compute annual measures of labor participation, occupation, per capita labor income, average per capita household income, the Gini coefficients of labor income and per-capita household income, and moderate and extreme monetary poverty indices (headcount, gap, and severity). The study examined the impact of trade openness on poverty rate in South Africa. The ARDL bounds testing approach was used with annual data covering the period from 1990 to 2021. The study estimated four models, that is, an income-based model and a consumption-based model using two measures of trade openness which are total trade and exports as a percentage of GDP. For the income-based model 1, the findings confirmed that trade openness has a long-run negative impact on the poverty rate, while it has no significant impact in the short run. For model 3, it was found to be insignificant in the long run while in the short run, it was found that exports lead to a decrease in poverty rates. The finding confirmed that for the consumption-based model 2, trade openness leads to a decrease in the poverty rate in the long and short run. For model 4, in which exports are used as a measure for trade openness, it was found that it leads to a decrease in household consumption in the long run. Based on the results the study recommends that governments in developing countries should engage with other countries to increase their export capacity and in turn reduce their respective poverty levels.

The purpose of this work is to study the impact of demographic and socio-economic factors affecting the level of poverty in the regions of Kazakhstan. The research examined the regions of Atyrau, Turkestan, Mangystau, and Akmola regions, where the poverty rate is higher than the average for Kazakhstan. The main factors influencing poverty are divided into four groups: economic, demographic, social and geographical. The current study focuses on the analysis of the general dynamics of poverty in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Accordingly, the study aims to examine the impact of three factors (economic, demographic and social) on absolute poverty. The period under review included ten years, 2011-2021. Five hypotheses were put forward. The SPSS program was used for data analysis, and a correlation-regression analysis was carried out. The results of the study showed that average monthly salary, gross regional product, living wage, number of students at higher educational institutions, number of people who receive state pension payments, number of people who receive assigned state social payments have a significant influence on the poverty rate in Turkestan region. Poverty eradication is one of the biggest and most important tasks of society. This is the main mission of the World Bank and the primary goal in the field of sustainable development, which reflects the agreement of 193 countries on key socio-economic priorities. The results of the study can be used both at the state and local levels to develop programs and strategies to combat poverty in the regions of Kazakhstan.

This paper used the micro panel data from 2016 to 2019 of 2031 registered poor households in B Town, W County, Lu'an City of Anhui Province in China to analyze the diversified patterns and poverty alleviation effect of paired assistance based on the PSM-DID model. The empirical results show that paired assistance provided by social forces can significantly contribute to the poverty alleviation of poor households, promoting the poverty alleviation rate by 7.8%, which can be concluded through sample matching and control of relevant variables. Furthermore, based on the subsample of poor households with social assistance, we found that external social assistance subject to paired assistance can significantly improve the poverty alleviation rate of poor households by 14.26%, mainly hung on their economic base and strength of poverty alleviation. It is widely believed that China's socialist economy had relatively high rates of extreme poverty while the capitalist reforms of the 1980s and 1990s delivered rapid progress. This narrative relies on World Bank estimates of the share of people living on less than $1.90 a day (2011 PPP), which show a sharp decline from 88 per cent in 1981 to zero by 2018. However, the World Bank's poverty line has been critiqued for ignoring variations in the actual cost of meeting basic needs. In this paper we review data published by the OECD on the share of people unable to afford a subsistence basket. These estimates indicate that from 1981 to 1990, when most of China's socialist provisioning systems were still in place, the country's extreme poverty rate was on average only 5.6 per cent, substantially lower than in capitalist economies of comparable size and income at the time: 51 per cent in India, 36.5 per cent in Indonesia, and 29.5 per cent in Brazil. China's comparatively strong performance is corroborated by data on other social indicators. Moreover, extreme poverty in China increased during the capitalist reforms of the 1990s, reaching a peak of 68 per cent, as privatisation inflated the prices of essential goods and thus deflated the incomes of the working classes. These results indicate that socialist provisioning policies can be effective at preventing extreme poverty, while market reforms may threaten people's ability to meet basic needs. This article analyses the persistence of informal settlements in the city of Santiago, Chile, between 1990 and 2018, a period of democratic governments characterised by falling poverty rates and – paradoxically – state efforts to reduce informality by increasing the provision of housing for low-income groups. Based on a qualitative study that includes document analysis and interviews with poor urban residents and governmental actors, I describe one mechanism of informal housing reproduction: the cyclical repopulation of informal urbanisations, that is, the intertwined processes of relocation of informal residents and the reoccupation of settlement sites by new families. In contrast to dichotomous understandings of informality that explain informal housing as produced by residents' poverty, the article shows that repopulation cycles respond to a regime of government structured around what I call a 'politics of poverty', a framework that labels informal settlements as 'spatial concentrations of poverty', therefore creating spatial zones of intervention. While this helps the state to target informal settlements as subjects of poverty policies, residents mobilise the policy's categories to legitimate informal practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
