This paper critically examines the notion of working time flexibility of platform takeaway riders and its impact on them in China. Drawing on 25 interviews with platform and takeaway delivery company managers and takeaway riders as well as secondary data, the study finds that the management model adopted by the platform companies and their agency companies often encourages riders to extend their working hours by being designed into the rider's earning system, status level and various incentive schemes. Driven by profits, takeaway delivery platform companies pursue speed and impose harsh punishments for poor customer reviews. Severe competition and the platforms' aggressive pricing and commissioning practices mean that takeaway riders' remuneration is tightly squeezed, with no subsidies or overtime payment, and with rules for bonuses that make it increasingly difficult to earn. Working excessively long and intense hours is the only way that riders can increase their income, which suggests that rider-oriented working time flexibility is virtually non-existent. We propose the notion of fragmented employment relationships and fragmented working time to conceptualise working time flexibility in the takeaway delivery context in China. We accentuate the need to examine the quality of working time flexibility when examining this practice. We call for state interventions to provide a greater level of social protection than the takeaway riders are currently experiencing to advance the decent work agenda as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. Overtime, choosing not to have children has become a more common phenomenon. Alongside this change, studies have found that women without children are just as fulfilled, if not more so, in their lives as those who have had children. These studies, in the context of theories of second-wave feminism, psychosocial theory, and stigma theory, are reviewed. This study presents a dissatisfied older woman who has not had children to examine the differences in such cases. As a product of thematic analysis, five themes stand out during Holly's interview: focus on the past, stigma, fear, relationships with younger generations, and regret. Results are discussed in the context of what they may mean for future research and practice with the suggestion that perhaps an over-focus on the past, in lieu of present and future circumstances, may be a factor in childless women's dissatisfaction in life. Background: Scientific investigation of how to sustain the implementation of evidence-based interventions (EBI) is emerging. Sustaining the implementation of EBIs helps ensure their effects on improving health endure. External policy or practice agencies, such as government health departments, are often tasked with supporting individual organisations with sustaining their delivery of EBIs, for example, through financing, training or the provision of other supports. However, to our knowledge, the approaches taken by policy and practice agencies to support the sustainment of EBIs have not been consolidated, categorised and described as a typology. Main body: To improve conceptual clarity and support both research and practice, we developed an initial working typology of the practical approaches to sustain implementation of EBIs (i.e. sustainment) in order to improve long term health from the perspective of these agencies. The working typology includes three broad approaches. The first, termed 'Self-Sustainment', is when implementation of the EBI by an organisation (e.g. hospital, clinic, school) is expected to continue (sustain) in the absence of external (agency) support. The second, termed 'Static Sustainment Support', involves the provision of pre-defined external (agency) support to assist organisations to continue implementation of an EBI. The final approach is termed 'Dynamic Sustainment Support', whereby support provided by an external agency is dynamic (continues to be adapted) overtime to assist organisations continue implementation of an intervention which may itself also evolve. Conclusions: We describe the contexts and circumstances where each may be most appropriate in achieving sustained implementation and discuss their research and practice implications. This article provides a first assessment of the causal impact of the 2018–2021 reform in Korea meant to combat its long working‐hour culture. The reform consists of lowering the statutory limit on total weekly working hours from 68 to 52. We apply a difference‐in‐difference approach in which we take advantage of the stepwise implementation of the reform by firm size using individual‐level data. We present three main findings. First, the introduction of the 52‐h limit reduced but far from eliminated the incidence of working more than 52 h. Second, there is some evidence that the introduction led to a reallocation of working hours, with more employees shifting from working fulltime to working overtime within the new limit (41–52 h). Third, and more tentatively, this reallocation more likely took place within firms to account for fewer overtime hours worked by their employees, rather than within households to compensate for any income effects. Overall, our results show that a lower statutory limit can help to lessen a long working‐hour culture, but is an insufficient measure by itself to fully eradicate it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The mental burdens of general practitioners (GPs) and practice assistants (PrAs) during the COVID-19 pandemic are well investigated. Work-related conditions like overtime are known to contribute to perceived chronic stress and burnout symptoms. However, there is limited evidence regarding the specific mechanisms, which link pandemic-related overtime, chronic stress and burnout symptoms. This study used data from the IMPROVEjob trial to improve psychological well-being in general practice personnel. Methods: This prospective study with 226 German GPs and PrAs used the baseline (pre-pandemic: October 2019 to March 2020) and follow-up data (pandemic: October 2020 to April 2021) of the IMPROVEjob trial. Overtime was self-reported as hours above the regular work time. Perceived chronic stress was assessed using the Trier Inventory for the Assessment of Chronic Stress Screening Scale (TICS-SSCS), while burnout symptoms were evaluated using a short version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). A mediation analysis investigated the differences of the three main variables between pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. Results: Burnout symptoms increased significantly from baseline to follow-up (p = 0.003). Overtime correlated positively with burnout symptoms (Total Effect: 0.13; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.23). Decomposition of the total effect revealed a significant indirect effect over perceived chronic stress (0.11; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.18) and no significant direct effect (0.02; 95% CI: −0.08, 0.12), indicating a full mediation. Conclusion: In this large longitudinal study, pandemic-related overtime led to significantly higher levels of burnout symptoms, linked by a pathway through perceived chronic stress. Prolonged heat exposure may cause various physiological responses to outdoor workers. This will result in economic and productivity losses for a company and also may affect the sustainable development speed of cities. To avoid the above adverse effects, an alerting system is designed for outdoor workers to prevent them from overtime working in high-temperature scenarios. In the system, multiple sensors embedded micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) wearable device is used for real-time working status data collection, and a hybrid deep learning model is adopted to recognise the working status of outdoor workers. This hybrid model, called C-LSTM, combines the advantages of convolutional neural networks (CNN) and long short-term memory networks (LSTM) to extract useful spatial and temporal features of working status efficiently. Experimental results show that the performance on the inference time and accuracy of the C-LSTM model is better than that of conventional ones. The working status recognition accuracy of the C-LSTM model reaches 97.91%, and the inference time of the model reduces to less than 51 ms. In addition, the C-LSTM model has the best stability. The designed system can not only be used in outdoor high-temperature environment but also applied to medical and industrial scenarios, which further extends the application fields. CEATECSOFT E.I.R.L. faces a challenge that requires an evaluation. Through the analysis of stakeholders in the organisation, a decrease in economic profitability has been detected. This situation is linked to several factors, such as labour costs and overtime for technical staff, licence invoicing and expenses associated with desktop system upgrades. The objective of this research was to determine to what extent the implementation of multi-tenant architecture in software as a service (SaaS) increases its usability in MSEs in the commerce sector of North Eastern Peru. For this purpose, pre-experimental research was carried out with a sample of 32 MSEs to whom a questionnaire was applied to measure the degree of usability of the software put into production. On average, 92 % of the respondents recognised improvements in the proposed solution, which significantly differs between the pre-and post-test. In conclusion, the software as a service (SaaS) developed under the multi-tenant architecture has increased the implemented system's usability, generating significant profitability benefits for the CEATECSOFT E.I.R.L. company. Firstly, technical staff costs have been reduced by eliminating the need to manage multiple versions and minimising the costs associated with technical visits to customers, and the costs associated with registering new customers. Objective: The symptoms of insomnia are defined as difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, and early awakening. Although also a symptom of insomnia, nonrestorative sleep (NRS) is clearly more associated with objective indices than other insomnia symptoms. However, the link between NRS and overtime work duration is poorly understood. Methods: The results of a single year's medical examinations were investigated for 26,144 Japanese office workers who were 30 to 59 years old. NRS status and lifestyle were collected through a computer-assisted medical interview. The subjects were asked about the presence or absence of NRS and their lifestyles in the most recent two to three months. The subjects were asked about their sleep times and average overtime durations per month (< 20 h/month, ≥ 20 but < 40 h/month, ≥ 40 but < 60 h/month, and ≥ 60 h/month). The relationships between NRS and overtime work duration adjusted for sleep time were also analyzed. Results: The proportion of subjects with NRS showed a stepwise increase as overtime work hours increased. A logistic regression analysis was performed using NRS as an objective variable. The multivariate analysis demonstrated that overtime work duration (OR, 1.13; 95% CI 1.10–1.17; P < 0.001; per one-category increase) was an independent determinant of NRS. We argue that reconceptualizing social bond theory (SBT) through incorporation of dual agency and change can identify unique causal change sequences, improve its ability to explain offending, and generate new questions about it. The reconceptualization recognizes that individuals and those with whom they interact play an ongoing role in contributing to the bond. It shows that changes in the bond can contribute to changes in delinquency through three sequences, each with a unique over-time pattern that depends on how bond agents respond to delinquency. We identify implications for SBT—highlighting that theoretical arguments about static effects do not necessarily equate to straightforward predictions about change effects—and, more broadly, efforts to advance theories of offending. By employing the unique data related to employee overtime complaints about the firms listed in the financial industry of Taiwan Stock Exchange, we explore whether firm performance would be affected by several overtime complaints issues including complaints of maximum working hours exceeded, overtime without pay, and overtime without records. We then reveal the following essential findings. First, the firms with employee overtime complaints would not enhance firm performance. Second, complaints of maximum working hours exceeded would have significant negative impacts on firm performance as compared with firm performance affected by either complaints of overtime without records or complaints of overtime without pay, indicating that employee's complaints about overtime should not be neglected by enterprises. Third, we still show that the firm with better financial performance such as higher net profit ratio and well-functioned board structure like small board size would have better firm performance. This paper studies the assignment problem of multi product assembly jobs to days. The problem aims to minimize the amount of overtime while avoiding assembly delays for jobs that can be fragmented into smaller sub-tasks. When sequencedependent setup times are negligible, the problem considered transforms into the bin packing problem with restricted item fragmentation where jobs represent items and days stand for bins. We present a mixed integer programming model of the problem by extending earlier formulations in the literature. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) promote flexible forms of work. Based on analyses of data from the German BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey 2018, this article shows that ICT (computer/internet) use is associated with both overtime and better temporal alignment of work and private life. Additional analyses show that these associations differ by gender and parenthood. Especially if also working from home, men with and without children do more overtime when they use ICTs than women with and without children. Better temporal alignment is found only among men without children who use ICTs and work from home compared to women without children.
