Technical Features of the Architecture of an Electronic Trilingual Dictionary This article is devoted to the development of the software system used to create an English-Russian-Ukrainian terminological dictionary. Scanned and recognized documents in MSWord format were the input data for the dictionary. Issues which appeared during the parsing of the input data are analyzed and solutions using regular expressions are identified. This article also describes the scheme of the dictionary’s lexicographical database, and its classes of models, views and view models. In addition, a detailed description of the software system from a user’s perspective is included, the prospects for the usage of the dictionary are discussed, and the methods used during the development of the system are described. The software system is built using the design pattern Model-View-View-Model. Through the use of this pattern, internal logic is separated from user interface, thus changes made in different parts of the software may be independent. The developed software system allows users to edit, to fill, and thus to create new thematic transferable electronic dictionaries. The main advantage of the system is the equality of languages, i.e. each user can decide which language is to be major. Equivalent Culture-Anchored Units Translation? The Phraseological Units IssueThis article examines a question that has been of long-standing interest to linguists working in the fields of cross-linguistic phraseology and the translation of idiosyncratic language units, such as phraseological units (PUs). The challenge of translating PUs, which are understood as "patterns sanctioned by a given culture", involves the translation of culturemes. Therefore, a good translator must be able to assess the importance of the elements containing cultural references in the source language while "moving" them to the target language. When translating PUs, it is desirable that interlingual (cross-linguistic) equivalence be achieved. The fact that translations of a PU can be very different (the translator can paraphrase the text, creatively change it, or simply eliminate the PU) implies that the translational equivalence of PUs must be functional. While a cross-linguistic comparison (and the achievement of translational equivalence) of PUs can be made by omitting the form parameter, it is desirable to preserve the extension and semantic structure, the connotative-pragmatic component, and the phrase combinatorics. Wyzwaniem podczas tłumaczenia JF, rozumianych jako "wzorce sankcjonowane przez daną kulturę", jawi się konieczność tłumaczenia kulturemów. Tłumacz zatem stoi w obliczu konieczności prawidłowej oceny danego elementu pod względem jego odniesień kulturowych w języku źródłowym podczas przekładania JF na język docelowy. Podczas tłumaczenia JF pożądane jest osiągnięcie międzyjęzykowej (cross-linguistic) ekwiwalencji. Fakt, że tłumaczenie JF może być wielorakie (tłumacz może parafrazować tekst, twórczo go zmienić lub po prostu wyeliminować JF), oznacza, że ekwiwalencja przekładu JF musi być funkcjonalna. Chociaż podczas międzyjęzykowego porównania (mającego na celu osiągnięcie translacyjnej równoważności) JF ich forma jest rzeczą drugorzędną, to wskazane jest, aby zachować ich rozszerzenie znaczeniowe i strukturę semantyczną, aspekt konotacyjno-pragmatyczny oraz łączliwość.

On the Dictionary of Semantic Equivalents in Polish, Bulgarian and Russian Leksykon odpowiedniości semantycznych w jezyku polskim, bulgarskim i rosyjskim [ The Dictionary of Semantic Equivalents in Polish, Bulgarian and Russian ] is the first Polish dictionary which compares semantic equivalents in the largest languages of each Slavic subgroup: The West Slavic group (Polish), the South Slavic group (Bulgarian) and the East Slavic group (Russian). The content of the dictionary reflects the social processes, changes and trends which have taken place over recent years. The dictionary consists of 5 volumes, with approximately 5000 entries for each language. What sets it apart from other dictionaries is that it ventures beyond the standard vocabulary one might expect from a dictionary of this sort. Leksykon also contains neologisms as well as realogisms - words which do not often have perfect equivalents in other languages because they are so deeply embedded in a nation’s culture. Each entry in the dictionary offers state-of-the-art semantic and syntactic categorisers, developed by Polish experts in Slavic semantics and aspectology. We consider the dictionary to be an innovation in lexicography, because its open structure enables more languages to be added in the future, including non-Slavic languages. Developed with the use of the most recent methodologies available, the dictionary will constitute a sound basis for lexicographic research in the future, in particular for the development of multilingual electronic dictionaries. In the 21st century, we face two great challenges: to make academic research more interdisciplinary and to build an integrated multinational European community. We hope that our dictionary will help address these challenges by promoting multilingualism and facilitating intercultural communication.The primary language of the dictionary is Polish - the largest Slavic language in the European Union. During the Polish presidency of the EU, a conference entitled Multilingual Competences for Professional and Social Success in Europe was held. It concluded with the following declaration: "Multilingualism is not only part of European heritage, but also a chance to develop a society which is open, respectful of cultural diversity and ready for cooperation". However, the chief obstacles that prevents the EU from attaining the full integration of its economies and societies are language barriers. This dictionary will help overcome these barriers by promoting Slavic languages. The One Form/One Meaning Principle. The Case for Case. Part IThe main topic of the paper is the problem of validating linguistic procedures aimed at representing the meaning of cases as they are employed in two invariant-oriented approaches to language and grammar: in Roman Jakobson’s ‘feature-based’ framework and in Gustave Guillaume’s Psychomechanics of Language. Also taken into account are trends within the cognitively-oriented approach to grammar, whose proponents object to procedures based on the structuralist principle: one form/one meaning. Ultimately, by invoking the methodological prerequisites of cognitive linguistics, as introduced in Ronald Langacker’s version of cognitive grammar, the author claims that, inasmuch as cases are concerned, there seems to be, in principle, no contradiction between introducing a stable relationship between the linguistic sign and its meaning, and positing the prototype-centered and network-based structuring of a linguistic category, as advocated in cognitive linguistics. The conclusion is that any of these three linguistic traditions could benefit by taking into account the findings of the other two approaches. Zasada jednej formy/jednego znaczenia. W toku wywodu autor analizuje teoretyczne uwarunkowania konstruktów służących badaniu i reprezentowaniu znaczeniowych inwariantów kategorii przypadkowych oraz form będących ich tekstowymi realizacjami. Autor bierze też pod uwagę wątpliwości przedstawicieli kognitywnie zorientowanaych badań nad kategorią przypadka dotyczące wartości wyjaśnień uzyskiwanych za pomocą modeli odwołujących się do strukturalistycznej zasady jedna forma/jedno znaczenie. Odwołując się do ustaleń gramatyki kognitywnej Ronalda Langackera i jej zwolenników, autor konfrontuje je z ustaleniami przywołanych wcześniej badaczy i stwierdza, że w kwestii semantyki form przypadkowych nie ma zasadniczej sprzeczności między strukturalno–funkcjonalnym postulowaniem ustabilizowanej relacji między znakiem językowym i jego znaczeniem a prototypowo–sieciową organizacją kategorii językowej proponowaną przez zwolenników ujęć kognitywnych. Ponadto autor konstatuje, że pochodzące z trzech różnych tradycji językoznawczych wyjaśnienia kwestii znaczenia form przypadkowych wzajemnie się dopełniają, odsłaniając wieloaspektową naturę tego zjawiska.

Towards Recognition of Spatial Relations between Entities for PolishIn this paper, the problem of spatial relation recognition in Polish is examined. We present the different ways of distributing spatial information throughout a sentence by reviewing the lexical and grammatical signals of various relations between objects. We focus on the spatial usage of prepositions and their meaning, determined by the ‘conceptual’ schemes they constitute. We also discuss the feasibility of a comprehensive recognition of spatial relations between objects expressed in different ways by reviewing the existing tools and resources for text processing in Polish. As a result, we propose a heuristic method for the recognition of spatial relations expressed in various phrase structures called spatial expressions. We propose a definition of spatial expressions by taking into account the limitations of the available tools for the Polish language. A set of rules is used to generate candidates of spatial expressions which are later tested against a set of semantic constraints.The results of our work on recognition of spatial expressions in Polish texts were partially presented in (Marcińczuk, Oleksy, & Wieczorek, 2016). In that paper we focused on a detailed analysis of errors obtained using a set of basic morphosyntactic patterns for generating spatial expression candidates - we identified and described the most common sources of errors, i.e. incorrectly recognized or unrecognized expressions. In this paper we focused mainly on the preliminary stages of spatial expression recognition. We presented an extensive review on how the spatial information can be encoded in the text, types of spatial triggers in Polish and a detailed evaluation of morphosyntactic patterns which can be used to generate spatial expression candidates. Rozpoznawanie relacji przestrzennych między obiektami fizycznymi w języku polskimArtykuł dotyczy zagadnienia rozpoznawania relacji przestrzennych w języku polskim. Autorzy przedstawili różne sposoby przekazywania w tekstach informacji na temat relacji przestrzennych między obiektami fizycznymi, uwzględniając sygnały o charakterze leksykalnym i gramatycznym. Istotną częścią artykułu jest omówienie znaczenia przyimków użytych w celu wyrażenia relacji przestrzennych. Znaczenie to kształtowane jest przez schematy konceptualne współtworzone przez poszczególne przyimki. Omówiono również możliwości kompleksowego rozpoznawania relacji przestrzennych wyrażonych za pomocą różnych środków językowych. Służy temu przegląd istniejących zasobów i narzędzi przetwarzania języka polskiego.Jako rezultat autorzy proponują heurystyczną metodę rozpoznawania relacji przestrzennych realizowanych językowo za pomocą struktur składniowych określonych jako wyrażenia przestrzenne. W artykule zaprezentowano definicję wyrażeń przestrzennych uwzględniającą specyfikę narzędzi dostępnych do przetwarzania języka polskiego. Zestaw reguł składniowych umożliwia wytypowanie fraz – kandydatów kwalifikujących się jako wyrażenia przestrzenne, które następnie zostają porównane z adekwatnym zestawem ograniczeń semantycznych.

Mention Detection for Coreference Resolution in Polish. Development of the Formal GrammarThis paper presents the results of an improvement and extension of the Shallow Grammar of Polish, designed for the needs of the Computer-based Methods for Coreference Resolution in Polish Texts (CORE) project. The role of the Grammar was to detect nominal groups (i.e. multi-level nested phrases) that could be considered as mentions in coreference resolution tasks. In this article, the reorganization and changes to the Grammar are described, as well as the results of an evaluation of the Polish Coreference Corpus with manual annotations of mentions and coreferential expressions. A comparison of the second version of the Grammar with an evaluation of the first version reveals an improvement to the recall and F1 measures. Parsing płytki relacji koreferencji w języku polskim. Rozwój gramatyki formalnejCelem artykułu jest przedstawienie rezultatów prac zmierzających do rozszerzenia gramatyki powierzchniowej języka polskiego, stworzonej na potrzeby projektu "Komputerowe metody identyfikacji nawiązań w tekstach polskich" (grant NCN nr 6505/B/T02/2011/40), oraz poprawy wyników jej działania. Rolą gramatyki powierzchniowej jest wykrywanie grup nominalnych, które mogą wchodzić w relację koreferencji z innymi wyrażeniami w tekście. Nowa gramatyka została przetestowana z użyciem Polskiego Korpusu Koreferencyjnego, w którym grupy nominalne oraz relacje koreferencji między nimi zostały oznaczone ręcznie. Porównanie nowej wersji gramatyki z wersją poprzednią wykazało poprawę zarówno skuteczności wykrywania odpowiednich grup, jak i wzrost miary F1.

The Problems of Semantic Equivalence in Different Types of Ukrainian-Polish and Polish-Ukrainian DictionariesThis article deals with the problems of semantic equivalence that authors of various types of dictionaries, including bilingual ones, are faced with. Words and phraseological units of common Polish and Ukrainian origin separately developed their systems of meanings in both languages, making it difficult to identify analogues that adequately reflect the semantic structure of linguistic units. In general, the author’s assumptions are based on experience of publishing Polish-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Polish dictionaries of various types. Ontologized Lexicographical Systems in Modern TerminographyThe principles of the construction and use of the Virtual Terminographical Laboratory "Welding" are described. Wirtualne Laboratorium Terminograficzne zapewnia wsparcie w zestawieniu elektronicznych, multimedialnych słowników terminograficznych w dziedzinie spawalnictwa i powiązanych procesów.

The multifaceted and intermediary nature of lexical blending has been discussed from various theoretical perspectives in the last decades [Kubozono 1990; Kelly 1998; Dressler 2000; Kemmer 2003; Gries 2006; Fandrych 2008]. Corpus linguistic studies have contributed to a growing body of empirical data demonstrating significant patterns of blend formation [e.g. Gries 2004b, 2006; Beliaeva 2014]. These more recent findings are particularly important as they illustrate that lexical blending is not as irregular and unsystematic as it has often been assumed in the past [Lehrer 1996; Kelly 1998; Kemmer 2003; López Rúa 2004; Beliaeva 2014]. Because blends are often short-lived [Cannon 1986; Lehrer 1996] and informal [Bauer 1983; López Rúa 2010; Bauer 2012], making predictions about their nature is a complex task. Systematic analysis involves therefore a number of challenges. One such challenge is how to detect and collect these unspecified and un-tagged lexical items in a corpus. It is a well-known fact that conventional dictionaries are poor sources [Cannon 1986], and alternative methodologies are therefore required. Another challenge is how to ensure that the collected data is representative of all lexical blends within a selected set of limitations. Besides addressing these challenges, semantic aspects of ambiguity were investigated from a Cognitive Linguistics (CL) perspective [Geeraerts 2006a]. The patterns of ambiguity in the data are explained as instantiations of multistable perception, which is understood as a phenomenon in which “our perceptual system fails to produce a stable unambiguous percept” [Kornmeier et al. 2009: 138]. From a linguistic perspective, this means that aspects such as phonology, orthography, and semantics constitute variables holding a potential for functionally employed lexical ambiguity [Renner 2015]. At various stages, the study employed both automated processes and manual analyses, which means that workload limitations applied to the scope of the data. A central aim of the study was, however, to develop systematic approaches to the collection of lexical blends, precisely because it is considered necessary in the development of blend research in general. La nature variée et le rôle intermédiaire de l’amalgame lexical ont été abordés selon diverses perspectives théoriques ces dernières décennies [Kubozono 1990 ; Kelly 1998 ; Dressler 2000; Kemmer 2003 ; Gries 2006 ; Fandrych 2008]. Les études en linguistique de corpus ont permis la constitution d’un ensemble grandissant de données empiriques qui mettent au jour des patrons productifs de formation des amalgames [Gries 2004b, 2006 ; Beliaeva 2014]. Ces découvertes récentes sont particulièrement intéressantes en ce qu’elles illustrent le fait que l’amalgame lexical n’est pas aussi irrégulier et asystématique qu’on l’a souvent présupposé par le passé [Lehrer 1996 ; Kelly 1998 ; Kemmer 2003 ; López Rúa 2004 ; Beliaeva 2014]. En raison du caractère généralement éphémère [Cannon 1986 ; Lehrer 1996] et informel [Bauer 1983 ; López Rúa 2010 ; Bauer 2012] des amalgames, il est compliqué de faire des prédictions quant à leur nature. Leur analyse systématique présente donc un certain nombre de défis. Un de ces défis est de savoir comment détecter et recueillir ces lexèmes non spécifiés et non étiquetés dans les corpus. Il est bien connu que les dictionnaires conventionnels sont une source insuffisante [Cannon 1986], et des méthodologies autres sont ainsi nécessaires. Un autre défi est de savoir comment s’assurer que des données recueillies sont représentatives de l’intégralité des amalgames lexicaux à l’intérieur d’un ensemble limité. La prise en considération de ces défis a été complétée par des études sur l’ambiguïté sémantique dans une perspective cognitive (Linguistique Cognitive) [Geeraerts 2006a]. Ces modèles d’ambiguité dans les données s’expliquent comme des instanciations d’une perception multistable, qui doit s’entendre comme un phénomène par lequel « our perceptual system fails to produce a stable unambiguous percept » [Kornmeier et al. 2009 : 138]. D’un point de vue linguistique, cela signifie que des aspects tels que la phonologie, l’orthographe et la sémantique constituent des variables à fort potentiel d’ambigüité lexicale utilisée de façon fonctionnelle [cf. Renner 2015]. À plusieurs reprises, cette étude a eu recours aussi bien à des procédés automatisés qu’à des analyses manuelles, ce qui signifie que des limitations quantitatives s’appliquent au champ des données recueillies. Cependant, un objectif principal de cette étude a été de développer une approche systématique en ce qui concerne la collecte des amalgames, précisément car cette question est considérée comme fondamentale dans le développement général des études sur les amalgames.

The use of archimetaphor as an evaluative device of persuasion in the genre of journalistic commentaryThe present study explores the cognitive use of archimetaphor belonging to the evaluative devices of persuasion in emotional argumentation. The corpus consists of forty editorials taken from the Internet French newspapers and magazines. The subject matter of the gathered texts includes two thematic groups of reforms concerning the higher education system and the special retirement plan for public sector employees. Thanks to the archimetaphor the addresser may highlight or hide chosen aspects of the described problem in order to activate vital values concerning our life and existence. Therefore, the concept of “conflict” described in the analysed textes is conceptualised by means of four natural forces (elements) such as fire, air (wind), water and earth (soil) which leads both to the mechanism of naturalisation and axiological polarisation of the presented reality. The mechanism itself stems from two opposing relations: identification and differentiation, allowing the grouping of presented facts to the class of US (protagonists) and THEM (antagonists). In consequence, such axiological persuasion aims at influencing the addressees’ will and decisions and allows for nearly absolute acceptance of the opinions presented by the addresser. Dzięki archimetaforyzacji nadawca może odpowiednio uwypuklić lub ukryć wybrane aspekty opisywanego zagadnienia w celu aktywowania wartości witalnych związanych z naszym życiem i egzystencją. To właśnie dlatego konceptualizacja pojęcia „konfliktu” poruszanego w analizowanym materiale odnosi się do czterech sił natury (żywiołów), takich jak: ogień, powietrze (wiatr), woda i ziemia (gleba), co z kolei prowadzi do naturalizowania i aksjologicznej polaryzacji opisywanej rzeczywistości. Cet article analyse les relations entre l’expérience de la douleur mentale, les sensations et les émotions qu’elle entraîne et les représentations qui en sont faites dans des écrits autobiographiques. L’étude du verbe lexical feel dans les constructions feel like + SN, feel like / as if + contenu propositionnel permet de montrer que la douleur mentale est conceptualisée comme ce qu’elle n’est pas, dans l’irréel. En mobilisant un élément de comparaison, l’énonciateur rend saillant un aspect important de la douleur mentale. In this article, I am interested in the relationship between the experience of mental pain, the sensations and emotions it engenders and its verbal representations in autobiographical writings. I have attempted to provide an account of the verbalization of mental pain by analyzing the constructions feel like + NP, feel like / as if + propositional content. These constructions enable the subject to represent his or her experience in terms of an irreal experience and, by mobilizing a comparison, to highlight an important aspect of mental pain.

The data-driven Bulgarian WordNet: BTBWNThe paper presents our work towards the simultaneous creation of a data-driven WordNet for Bulgarian and a manually annotated treebank with semantic information. Such an approach requires synchronization of the word senses in both - syntactic and lexical resources, without limiting the WordNet senses to the corpus or vice versa. Our strategy focuses on the identification of senses used in BulTreeBank, but the missing senses of a lemma also have been covered through exploration of bigger corpora. The identified senses have been organized in synsets for the Bulgarian WordNet. Then they have been aligned to the Princeton WordNet synsets. Various types of mappings are considered between both resources in a cross-lingual aspect and with respect to ensuring maximum connectivity and potential for incorporating the language specific concepts. The mapping between the two WordNets (English and Bulgarian) is a basis for applications such as machine translation and multilingual information retrieval. Oparty na danych WordNet bułgarski: BTBWNW artykule przedstawiono naszą pracę na rzecz jednoczesnej budowy opartego na danych wordnetu dla języka bułgarskiego oraz ręcznie oznaczonego informacjami semantycznymi banku drzew. Takie podejście wymaga uzgodnienia znaczeń słów zarówno w zasobach składniowych, jak i leksykalnych, bez ograniczania znaczeń umieszczanych w wordnecie do tych obecnych w korpusie, jak i odwrotnie. Nasza strategia koncentruje się na identyfikacji znaczeń stosowanych w BulTreeBank, przy czym brakujące znaczenia lematu zostały również zbadane przez zgłębienie większych korpusów. Zidentyfikowane znaczenia zostały zorganizowane w synsety bułgarskiego wordnetu, a następnie powiązane z synsetami Princeton WordNet. Rozmaite rodzaje rzutowań są rozpatrywane pomiędzy obydwoma zasobami w kontekście międzyjęzykowym, a także w odniesieniu do zapewnienia maksymalnej łączności i możliwości uwzględnienia pojęć specyficznych dla języka bułgarskiego. Rzutowanie między dwoma wordnetami (angielskim i bułgarskim) jest podstawą dla aplikacji, takich jak tłumaczenie maszynowe i wielojęzyczne wyszukiwanie informacji.

The semantic classification of adjectives in the Bulgarian Wordnet: Towards a multiclass approachThe paper presents an attempt at semantic classification of adjectives in the Bulgarian wordnet. Although designed for the Bulgarian wordnet, the classification can be applied to other wordnets which are developed in parallel to the Princeton WordNet. The classification relies on information that is already available in WordNet from other synsets (noun, verb, and other adjective synsets) that are linked to the adjective synsets via lexico-semantic relations - including their semantic classes, as well as definitions and usage examples. The first stage of the work was already presented at the workshop "Challenges for WordNets" within the conference "Language, Data and Knowledge 2017". The continuation of the effort as described in this article, covers a proposal for introducing additional semantic classes to the adjective synsets (if applicable). Chociaż została ona zaprojektowana dla wordnetu bułgarskiego, klasyfikacja może być zastosowana w innych wordnetach, które są rozwijane równolegle do Princeton WordNet. Klasyfikacja opiera się na informacjach, które są już dostępne w bułgarskim wordnecie pozyskanych z innych synsetów (rzeczownikowych, czasownikowych i innych przymiotnikowych), powiązanych z synsetami przymiotnikowymi poprzez relacje leksykalno-semantyczne, w tym ich klasy semantyczne, a także definicje i przykłady użycia. Pierwszy etap pracy został już przedstawiony, a kolejny obejmuje propozycję wprowadzenia dodatkowych klas semantycznych w synsetach przymiotnikowych (w stosownych przypadkach).

The coral of your lips, the stars of your eyes – the function of the genitive case in a particular kind of genitive metaphor compared to other semantic functions of this case (based on examples in the Polish language) This paper attempts to explicate the meanings of expressions representing a specific type of genitive metaphor – binding two notions by the rule of conventional, surface sameness. This article aims to prove that the genitive function that appears in this kind of expression is part of a general pattern modelling the semantic roles of this case. This pattern presents the genitive as a lingual indicator of the relation between a "smaller range" object and a "larger range" object and explains the essence of the semantic function appearing not only in this particular type of genitive metaphor, but also in structures such as genetivus definitivus . Sustainable long-term WordNet development and maintenance: Case study of the Czech WordNetCzech WordNet represents one of the first national wordnets created during the EuroWordNet and BalkaNet projects. However, the data contains various issues that affect the use of Czech WordNet in NLP applications. Since the publication of the first CzWN version, the semantic network was augmented in several phases, however, complex final editing and publishing process has not been finished. In 2017, we have started a project to evaluate and update the Czech WordNet, followed by a connection to the Collaborative Interlingual Index. In this paper, we provide an overview of Czech WordNet data updates and extensions, and present the roadmap to publish a revised version of the Czech WordNet under open license. Moreover, we introduce a developed concept for long-term updates and maintenance of the data based on crowdsourcing activities. Zrównoważony i długafalowy proces rozwoju i utrzymania wordnetu na przykładzie wordnetu czeskiegoCzeski WordNet jest jednym z pierwszych narodowych wordnetów powstałych podczas projektów EuroWordNet i BalkaNet. Jednakże dane zawierają błędy, które wpływają na używanie czeskiego wordnetu w aplikacjach NLP. Od momentu opublikowania pierwszej wersji czeskiego wordnetu sieć semantyczna została rozszerzona w kilku etapach, jednak złożony proces końcowej edycji i publikacji nie został jeszcze zakończony. W roku 2017 zaczęliśmy projekt mający na celu ocenę i aktualizację czeskiego wordnetu, a następnie połączenie go z Collaborative Interlingual Index. W danym artykule przedstawiamy ogólny zarys uaktualnień i rozszerzeń zawartości czeskiego wordnetu, a także prezentujemy plan działania, który doprowadzi do publikacji udoskonalonej wersji czeskiego wordnetu na otwartej licencji. Ponadto prezentujemy opracowaną koncepcję długoterminowych uaktualnień i utrzymania danych w oparciu o działania crowdsourcingowe.

This diachronic lexicographic study aims to analyze the morpho-semantic behaviour of ‑age forms in the OED3. The objective is to provide evidence of the diachronic processes which enabled a loan form to become an independent productive pattern of derivation in English. Using the OED3 as a corpus, a list of all the words ending in ‑age were generated and then filtered to exclude all those that did not undoubtedly carry the ‑age ending. This filtering removed many false results, such as compounds carrying the noun age and the combining form ‑phage, as well as a multitude of derivatives of existing ‑age nouns, leaving a total of 921 definitive ‑age nominal derivatives. A classification of these forms from a morpho-semantic perspective was then carried out with a view to determining the patterns of formation. The classification is based on historical attestation date, on word origin or base word analysis (LOAN, LOAN BLEND, DEVERBAL OR DENOMINAL DERIVATIVE, BLEND, or UNKNOWN) and finally on semantic features (ACTION / RESULT, PAYMENT, QUANTITY, COLLECTIVE). The distribution of these factors over time then allowed me to attempt to answer the following questions. When do language internal derivatives begin? Are the ‑age forms stable over time or do they evolve, and if so in which direction?The findings of this initial morpho-semantic analysis showed that the pattern of ‑age derivation has remained remarkably stable since its beginnings around 1200 until today, with a slight preference for denominal ‑age nouns over deverbal ‑age nouns. While these results tend to confirm pre-existing findings in historical lexical morphology, the following step involved assessing the productivity of ‑age words over time. The novel part of this study was twofold; first focusing on whether ‑age forms are susceptible to semantic change, and secondly focusing on error forms and transmission errors which enabled me to consider the evidence of historical productivity. In the final section these productivity concerns were extended to contemporary English via a Web Crawler corpus so as to investigate whether ‑age forms continue to exhibit similar behaviour or whether new patterns can be determined. Three major findings stand out.1) So-called obsolete vage forms in the OED3 are not obsolete after all, showing the remarkable productivity and adaptability of ‑age forms over the centuries;2) ‑age words follow a reliable semantic pattern, fitting into four main categories of ACTION / RESULT, TAX / RIGHTS / PAYMENT, STATUS / POSITION, COLLECTIVE / QUANTITY. There is a predictable relation between base word and derivative, which may explain the continued success of ‑age forms, in that they can be used in slang, technical usage, etc. Their remarkable adaptability allows for a sense to be directly dependent on a context, as exemplified by the usage of ownage, or rakeage in English Web 2013; 3) ‑age forms are not very polysemous, they remain transparent in their relation to the base word. They also appear to be less likely to be lexicalized given this transparency. This low rate of lexicalization is a sign of high productivity and may also explain the high rates of obsolescence of historical ‑age words in the OED3. Cette étude diachronique lexicographique vise à étudier le comportement morphosémantique des mots en ‑age du lexique de l’anglais. L’objectif est de mieux comprendre les mécanismes historiques qui ont permis le passage d’une forme empruntée au latin et au français pour devenir un mécanisme de dérivation productif de l’anglais. À partir du dictionnaire OED en ligne, l’ensemble des mots se terminant en ‑age ont été relevés, pour ensuite trier et supprimer ceux qui ne sont pas porteurs du morphème lié ‑age (tels que toutes les lexies contenant le morphème libre nominal ‑age) ainsi que toutes les formes qui sont dérivées de formes en ‑age. Ces exclusions permettent de réduire le nombre de lexies à l’étude de plus de 1200 à un peu plus de 900 lexies. Plusieurs étapes motivent le travail de classement et d’observation des lexies : un classement diachronique par année d’attestation, un classement morphologique selon la forme de la lexie (emprunt, forme hybride modelée sur le français ou le latin, dérivé, ou encore amalgame), un classement sémantique des formes selon des grands types sémantiques récurrents : ACTION, RESULTAT, COLLECTIF, QUANTITÉ, STATUT.À partir de ces données, une analyse diachronique de la répartition des lexies en ‑age à travers le temps devient possible. Les questions posées sont les suivantes : les lexies en ‑age ont-elles suivi une courbe stable au fil du temps, ou bien y a-t-il des périodes de changement ? La répartition des lexies déverbales et dénominales est-elle stable ? À quel moment la dérivation a-t-elle pris le dessus sur l’emprunt ? Quelle est la productivité actuelle des lexies en ‑age et que nous apprennent les nombreuses formes obsolètes du corpus ?Cette étude permet de montrer la remarquable stabilité de production des lexies en ‑age au fil du temps, avec une prépondérance de lexies dénominales sur les lexies déverbales. Les courbes de croissance des lexies déverbales et nominales s’avèrent relativement stables et parallèles, sans grand bouleversement des tendances. Plusieurs périodes fastes de création de lexies en ‑age sont confirmées par les données. Alors que ces résultats tendent à confirmer les études existantes sur la question des emprunts et des dérivés, la dernière partie de ce travail sur la productivité actuelle des lexies en ‑age de l’anglais, ainsi que la confrontation entre dérivés en ‑ing et dérivés en ‑age permet d’observer des caractéristiques fondamentales. 1) Les lexies obsolètes en ‑age du dictionnaire ne le sont pas ou plus véritablement, ce qui montre la capacité d’adaptation remarquable de ces formes (ce qui les différencie des dérivés en ‑ity et ‑ment en particulier ;2) Les lexies en ‑age ont un comportement sémantique cohérent qui correspond aux quatre types sémantiques définis (ACTION / RESULT, TAXE / DROIT / PAIEMENT, STATUT / DROIT, COLLECTIF / QUANTITÉ). Le sens du dérivé reste prévisible à partir du sens de la base, ce qui explique en partie leur remarquable succès, en particulier dans des registres variés allant de l’argot aux registres techniques. On note aussi une adaptation exceptionnelle, rendant le sens motivé par son contexte socioculturel (comme le montrent les emplois des lexies ownage, ou encore rakeage dans le corpus contemporain English Web 2013) ;3) Les dérivés en ‑age ne sont pas polysémiques : c’est le sens de la base qui explique le sens du dérivé. Cet article présente l’analyse sémantique et la diffusion de néologismes genrés en anglais que l’on appellera « man-neologisms » tels que man bun, mancation (man + vacation) et manspread. Notre étude (basée sur Foubert [2018]) montre que l’usage de man dans ces néologismes ne se réfère que très peu à son sens générique (les êtres humains en général, comme dans Homme) mais se réfère plutôt au sens spécifique (homme). Notre analyse sémantique des néologismes avec ce sens spécifique montre qu’ils sont spécifiques par le fait qu’ils désignent majoritairement des domaines typiquement associés aux femmes. De plus, notre étude révèle quatre motivations à l’origine de ces néologismes : (i) se réapproprier des domaines typiquement associés aux femmes, tel que man purse (un sac à main pour les hommes), (ii) cultiver les différences, tel que man cave (une pièce réservée aux hommes), (iii) conforter les stéréotypes, tel que man science (des connaissances qui ne sont disponibles qu’aux hommes), et (iv) nommer des comportements masculins indésirables, en ayant pour but de les changer, tel que mansplain (man + explain, ou mecspliquer : quand un homme explique quelque chose de façon condescendante). L’analyse portant sur la diffusion étudie la fréquence des occurrences des néologismes ; les résultats montrent que les néologismes qui visent à se réapproprier des domaines et plus particulièrement ceux qui visent à nommer des comportements masculins sont numériquement peu représentés dans les formations nouvelles, mais utilisés fréquemment, à l’inverse des néologismes qui cultivent les différences et confortent les stéréotypes. This article presents a semantic and frequency-based diffusion analysis of one specific type of gendered coinages that we will refer to as “man-neologisms” such as man bun, mancation (man + vacation) or manspread. Our study (based on Foubert [2018]) reveals that man in these coinages only rarely carries a generic meaning (referring to human beings in general, as in man is mortal) but mostly have a gender-specific meaning (“of, or related to, men”). Our analysis of the meanings of these man-specific neologisms shows that they are gender specific and mainly concern domains which are typically associated with women. Moreover, our analysis reveals four motivations behind the coinages of man-neologisms: (i) the reappropriation of domains which are typically associated with women, as in man purse (a purse for men), (ii) the reinforcement of differences, such as man cave (a room for men only), (iii) the confirmation of stereotypes, as in man science (a branch of knowledge available to men only), (iv) and naming undesirable male behaviours, mainly in an attempt to change them, such as mansplain (man + explain; men explaining things to women in a condescending way). The diffusion analysis observing the frequency of occurrences of man-neologisms reveals that neologisms aiming at the reappropriation of domains and particularly those naming undesirable male behaviours are less numerous in the list of coinages themselves, but more inclined to be diffused, contrary to neologisms reinforcing differences and confirming stereotypes.

Since taste seems to be an ideal candidate for a universal, biologically determined source of metaphors, the authors seek to verify the hypothesis of metaphor embodiment. The corpus-based analysis of nominal phrases with basic Polish and English taste adjectives indicates that cultural influences on the metaphorical mapping, as well as the importance of the target conceptual domains, must be taken into account. Celem pracy jest weryfikacja kognitywnej teorii o metaforze ucieleśnionej oraz sprawdzenie, w jakim stopniu na proces metaforyzacji wplywają czynniki kulturowe.

According to Allan & Burridge [1991: 11], “[a] euphemism is used as an alternative to a dispreferred expression, in order to avoid possible loss of face: either one’s own face or, through giving offence, that of the audience, or some third party.” The word “alternative” seems to imply that there is always a choice for speakers, according to the situation of utterance, the interlocutor(s), the register, etc. Yet, in some cases, there does not seem to be much choice, and some euphemisms are completely lexicalized as they have imposed themselves as the only acceptable ways to refer to a given referent or a given notion. This may be the case for politically-correct terms for instance, or for euphemisms referring to notions that are deemed too shocking or painful to be directly mentioned, such as diseases. This article aims to discuss the aspects of word-formation process in the euphemistic lexicon of physical and mental illnesses in English and in French, by resorting to a comparative analysis. I will try and show that if some euphemistic neologisms are generated to circumvent the taboo surrounding diseases and illnesses, some others act as real terminological creations and enable to play a role in structuring the domain. Le terme « alternative » semble impliquer qu’il existe toujours un choix pour les locuteurs, selon la situation d’énonciation, les interlocuteurs, le registre, etc. Cependant, dans plusieurs cas, il ne semble pas y avoir de réel choix, et certains euphémismes sont totalement lexicalisés dans le sens où ils se sont imposés comme les uniques façons de dénoter tel ou tel référent ou telle ou telle notion. C’est ainsi le cas des termes issus du politiquement correct, par exemple, ou des euphémismes utilisés dans la dénomination de notions jugées trop choquantes ou douloureuses pour être mentionnées directement, comme les maladies. Cet article se propose de mettre au jour les aspects de la création néologique dans le domaine du lexique d’origine euphémique des maladies physiques et mentales en anglais et en français. Je montrerai que si certains néologismes euphémiques sont générés pour court-circuiter le tabou autour de la maladie, d’autres agissent tels de réels néologismes terminologiques en ce qu’ils permettent de structurer le domaine.

The role of conceptual integration and simple dynamic scenarios in the meaning construction of the mapping in mathematicsOver the last two decades the impact of conceptual metaphor and conceptual blending on mathematics has been extensively researched (Lakoff & Núñez, 2000; Fauconnier & Turner, 2002; Turner, 2005; Núñez, 2006; Alexander, 2011; Turner, 2012; Danesi, 2016; Woźny, 2018). This paper examines the manner in which simple dynamic scenarios allow, through the process of conceptual integration, for multiple ways of constructing the meaning of a mathematical mapping. The paper analyses selected fragments extracted from two popular academic mathematics textbooks to ascertain how the authors use a number of simple dynamic scenarios to explain the concept. The paper then demonstrates how these dynamic scenarios help to avoid the problem of circularity of the (static) formal definition of the mapping. The results of the study indicate that conceptual blending may account for the flexibility of mathematics and its effectiveness in modelling the world around us. W tym artykule badany jest sposób, w jaki proste scenariusze dynamiczne wpływają, poprzez proces integracji pojęciowej, na konstruowanie wielu znaczeń odwzorowania (funkcji) w matematyce. Badane są fragmenty dwóch popularnych podręczników matematyki, w których autorzy wyjaśniają pojęcie odwzorowania poprzez proste scenariusze dynamiczne, unikając w ten sposób błędu logicznego „nieznane przez nieznane", którym obarczona jest statyczna definicja odwzorowania. Wyniki analizy mogą sugerować, że elastyczność matematyki – jej niezmienna skuteczność w modelowaniu otaczającego nas świata – jest efektem procesów integracji pojęciowej.

The usage and meaning of mentioned ( wspomniany ) and described ( opisany ) metatext markers in Polish scientific texts Metatext markers (MMs) are defined as expressions used in a text to inform readers of its structure or relations between its elements (Fraser, 1999; Goldman & Rakestraw, 2000; Schiffrin, 1988). In this paper the usage of two MMs "mentioned" ("wspomniany") and "described" ("opisany") in scientific texts is described and the relation between their meaning and usage is analysed. In Study 1, the frequency, scope and direction of the MM is analysed in a corpus of peer-reviewed scientific texts in Polish. In Experiment 2, participants decided whether to use the aforementioned MMs to fill gaps in short scientific texts. The results of both experiments suggest that while the meaning of an MM may influence its usage, this relation may be affected by the size of the whole text. W ponizszej pracy zostalo opisane uzycie dwoch OM wspomniany i opisany w tekstach naukowych, przeanalizowano takze relacje pomiedzy ich znaczeniem i uzywaniem. W badaniu 1 zostaly przeanalizowane czestośc uzycia, zakres i ukierunkowanie OM w tekstach naukowych pisanych po polsku. W badaniu 2 czytelnicy decydowali o tym, czy umieścic dodatkowy OM w krotkim tekście naukowym. Wyniku obydwu badan wskazują, ze znaczenie OM moze wplywac na sposob jego uzywania, ale wplyw ten zmienia sie wraz z wielkością tekstu.

Persistent semantic identity in WordNetAlthough rarely studied, the persistence of semantic identity in the WordNet lexical database is crucial for the interoperability of all the resources that use WordNet data. The present study investigates the stability of the two primary entities of the WordNet database (the word senses and the synonym sets), by following their respective identifiers (the sense keys and the synset offsets) across all the versions released between 1995 and 2012, while also considering "drifts" of identical definitions and semantic relations. Contrary to expectations, 94.4% of the WordNet 1.5 synsets still persisted in the latest 2012 version, compared to only 89.1% of the corresponding sense keys. Meanwhile, the splits and merges between synonym sets remained few and simple. These results are presented in tables that allow to estimate the lexicographic effort needed for updating WordNet-based resources to newer WordNet versions. We discuss the specific challenges faced by both the dominant synset-based mapping paradigm (a moderate amount of split synsets), and the recommended sense key-based approach (very few identity violations), and conclude that stable synset identifiers are viable, but need to be complemented by stable sense keys in order to adequately handle the split synonym sets. W niniejszej pracy zbadano stabilność dwóch podstawowych elementów bazy danych WordNet (jednostek leksykalnych i synsetów – zbiorów synonimicznych jednostek leksykalnych), poprzez prześledzenie ich identyfikatorów (tj. identyfikatorów jednostek i identyfikatorów synsetów) we wszystkich wersjach wydanych w latach 1995-2012. Wzięto również pod uwagę przesunięcia identycznych definicji i relacji semantycznych. Wbrew oczekiwaniom, 94,4% synsetów WordNetu 1.5 zachowało się w najnowszej wersji z 2012 r., w porównaniu do 89,1% odpowiadających im identyfikatorów jednostek. Tymczasem podziały i połączenia pomiędzy synsetami pozostały proste i nieliczne. Wyniki te przedstawiono w tabelach, które pozwalają oszacować wysiłek leksykograficzny potrzebny do aktualizacji zasobów opartych o WordNet do nowszych wersji WordNetu. Omawiamy konkretne wyzwania, przed którymi stoi zarówno dominujący paradygmat rzutowania synsetów (umiarkowana liczba podzielonych synsetów), jak i zalecane podejście oparte na identyfikatorach jednostek (bardzo niewiele naruszeń tożsamości) i stwierdzamy, że można stworzyć stabilne identyfikatory synsetów, ale muszą one iść w parze ze stabilnymi identyfikatorami jednostek, aby odpowiednio zająć się podzielonymi synsetami.

Aspects of gestural alignment in task-oriented dialoguesInterlocutors in a conversation influence each other in a number of dimensions. This process may lead to observable changes in their communicative behaviour. The directions and profiles of these changes are often correlated with the quality of interaction and may predict its success. In the present study, the gestural component of communication is scrutinised for changes that may reflect the process of alignment. Two types of task-oriented dialogues between teenagers are recorded and annotated for gestures and their features. We hypothesize that the dialogue task type (collaborative vs. competitive), as well as certain culture-specific properties of alignment that differ between German and Polish pairs, may significantly influence the process of communication. In order to explore the data and detect tendencies in gestural behaviour, automatised annotation mining and statistical exploration have been used, including a moving frame approach aimed at the investigation of co-occurring strokes as well as re-occurring strokes and their features. Significant differences between German and Polish speakers, as well as between the two dialogue types, have been found in the number of gestures, stroke duration and amplitude. Celem niniejszego badania jest eksploracja gestowego składnika komunikacji pod kątem zjawisk, które mogą odzwierciedlać zjawisko wzajemnego dopasowania uczestników. Zarejestrowano dwa typy dialogów zadaniowych z udziałem nastolatków. Nagrania anotowano pod kątem gestów i ich cech. W badaniu postawiono hipotezę, iż typ zadania dialogowego (ukierunkowane na współpracę vs. na konkurencję), jak również pewne specyficzne cechy kulturowe dopasowania komunikacyjnego, które różnicują polskie i niemieckie pary rozmówców, mogą oddziaływać na proces komunikacji. W celu eksploracji danych oraz wykrycia tendencji cechujących zachowania gestowe, wykorzystano zautomatyzowane metody analizy anotacji oraz techniki statystyczne. Uwzględniono podejście oparte na ruchomych oknach czasowych, umożliwiające analizę współwystępowania jak i powtarzania gestów właściwych i ich właściwości. Wykazano istotne różnice między rozmówcami polskimi i niemieckimi oraz między typami zadań dialogowych w zakresie liczby gestów, czasu trwania oraz amplitudy gestu właściwego.

Dynamic verbs in the Wordnet of PolishThe paper presents patterns of co-occurrences of wordnet relations involving verb lexical units in plWordNet - a large wordnet of Polish. The discovered patterns reveal tendencies of selected synset and lexical relations to form regular circular structures of clear semantic meanings. They involve several types of relations, e.g., presupposition, cause, processuality and antonymy, do not have a necessary character (there are exceptions), but can be used in wordnet diagnostics and guidelines for wordnet editors. The analysis is illustrated with numerous positive and negative examples, as well as statistics for verb relations in plWordNet 4.0 emo. Some attempts to a more general, linguistic explanation of the observed phenomena are also made. As a background, plWordNet model of linguistic character is briefly recollected. A special attention is given to the verb part. In addition the description of dynamic verbs by relations and features is discussed in details including relation definitions and substitution tests. Tłem obserwacji jest Słowosieć 4.0 emo, dla której omówiono skrótowo system relacji czasownikowych wraz ze statystykami. Szczególną uwagę autorzy poświęcili czasownikom dynamicznym i ich typowym relacjom, dla których przedstawiono testy substytucji z wytycznych do relacyjnego opisu czasownika, zdefiniowanych na potrzeby edycji Słowosieci przez lingwistów. The cognitive nature of Ukrainian nickname constructionThis article is devoted to the study of the cognitive nature of the informal anthroponym creation mechanisms in the everyday communication of Ukrainian speakers. The article traces the role of the associative factors, nominational motives, and cultural, historical and social circumstances that play a direct role in the emergence of informal naming. The article also examines the wide variations in unofficial anthroponyms in spoken Ukrainian, their uniqueness, and their temporal and local character. On one hand, nicknames are not codified. They are prone to variation and susceptible to temporality. On the other hand, they are regulated by certain lexical and word-building norms, as well as custom. It is observed that nicknames reveal both a direct and an indirect (metaphorical) nomination. The article emphasises the cognitive nature of informal names, which is based on a direct or metaphorical resemblance to well-known public figures from the past or present: politicians, actors, artists, musicians, athletes, artists, writers, television characters, etc. Occupations and professions are also analysed as sources of semantic associations which give rise to informal names. It has been revealed that there is a large number of teacher nicknames based on internal associative connections, in which sarcasm is especially expressive. The article also examines the cognitive-axiological mechanisms of nicknames, the emergence of which is associated with an unusual event or a special situation in the life of the named individual. Autorzy przedstawiają rolę czynników asocjacyjnych, przyczyny nominacji, uwarunkowania kulturalno-historyczne i społeczne, które bezpośrednio wpływają na pojawienie się potocznego nazewnictwa. Autorzy wskazują również na szeroką różnorodność nieoficjalnych antroponimów w ukraińskim języku mówionym, ich szczególny koloryt, charakter okolicznościowy i lokalny. Z jednej strony przezwiska nie są skodyfikowane, nie podlegają zmianom, nie są podatne na upływ czasu, z drugiej strony są regulowane przez pewne normy leksykalne i słowotwórcze, prawo zwyczajowe. Należy zauważyć, że przezwiska wykazują zarówno bezpośrednią, jak i pośrednią (metaforyczną) nominację. Autorzy podkreślają poznawczą naturę nieoficjalnych nazw, które powstały w oparciu o bezpośrednie lub metaforyczne podobieństwo do innych znanych osób w życiu publicznym kiedyś i obecnie: polityków, aktorów, artystów, muzyków, sportowców, artystów, pisarzy, bohaterów telewizyjnych itp. Przeanalizowano również korzenie i związki semantyczne w nieoficjalnym nazewnictwie, motywowane zajęciem lub profesją ludzi. Stwierdzono, że istnieje duża liczba przydomków nauczycieli, które pojawiły się poprzez wewnętrzną asocjację, w której delikatna natura i sarkazm są szczególnie wyraziste. Zwrócono również uwagę na poznawczo-aksjologiczne mechanizmy pseudonimów, których pojawienie się wiąże się z nietypowym zdarzeniem lub szczególnym przypadkiem w życiu osoby go noszącej.

Inside Baseball: Coverage, quality, and culture in the Global WordNetThe Global WordNet is succeeding in producing relatively open linguistic data that is coordinated to a degree among numerous languages. The project has grown organically, with no overall plan or direction. The result is a certain amount of incoherence in determining what items should be treated in wordnets, and how the various wordnets should aspire to consistent quality. Using the example of terms related to baseball, which constitute a non-trivial portion of the Princeton WordNet, this paper discusses problems of coverage selection both for English and for other languages, as well as methods to improve quality and depth through public review of current content, and contribution of missing terms and definitions. It is proposed that proper names be removed entirely from WordNet and treated as a separate project, and that individual languages produce annexes of indigenous concepts that can be readily considered within sister projects as a supplement to the Anglo-American weighting of the current endeavor. To produce a consistent product that transmits inter-intelligible understanding at a high level across languages, it is proposed that an open committee of interested stakeholders convene to consider the project's goals and develop a roadmap for how to achieve them. Proponuje się, aby nazwy własne zostały całkowicie usunięte z WordNetu i potraktowane jako odrębny projekt, a w ramach poszczególnych języków utworzone zostały aneksy rodzimych pojęć, które można wziąć pod uwagę w ramach siostrzanych projektów jako uzupełnienie obecnego anglo-amerykańskiego przedsięwzięcia. Towards a unified, socio-cognitive approach to language-mediated intercultural competenceVery few intercultural competence (IC) models include language, and those that do so portray the notion in an inconsonant manner. Nonetheless, research shows that language assures successful intercultural communication. Thus, this article stresses the need for a unified socio-cognitive approach which will introduce common and solid foundations for the role and nature of both language and IC. The article demonstrates that such an integrated framework, built on a reappraised notion of language, helps to overcome numerous dichotomies within IC models and leads to the emergence of a unified approach to language-mediated IC. New Bulgarian, Polish, and Ukrainian phraseology and language corporaThis article examines phraseological innovations in the Bulgarian, Polish and Ukrainian languages. Particular attention is paid to trends in the development of phraseology and to the sources of the enrichment of the phraseology of the three studied languages. The role of corpus technologies in research on language dynamics is described. W artykule została przedstawiona rola technologii korpusowych w dziedzinie badania dynamiki rozwoju języka.

Les noms de marque représentent des atouts linguistiques indéniables et remplissent de multiples fonctions, de la différentiation du produit jusqu’à la création et/ou le renforcement de l’image de marque de la société. La créativité linguistique et les jeux de mots sont convoqués lors de la création d’un nom de marque, qui prend fréquemment la forme d’amalgames. Bien que le rôle du phénomène d’amalgamation ait été depuis longtemps reconnu comme une caractéristique dominante du discours publicitaire et du discours du marketing, quasiment aucune recherche n’a été consacrée jusqu’à présent au rôle des amalgames dans les noms de marque, d’où l’objectif de cet article, qui consiste à analyser les quelque 600 noms de marque trouvés dans le Portmanteau Dictionary [Thurner 1993]. Après avoir étudié les motivations phonologiques, graphiques, stylistiques et sémantiques, nous concluons que les traits distinctifs des amalgames dans les noms de marque résident dans le chevauchement de mots entiers et de jeux de mots. En ce qui concerne les types de produits concernés, il semble que les amalgames s’infiltrent aussi bien dans les noms de boissons et nourritures, d’appareils électriques et scientifiques, de jouets et de matériels sportifs que dans les noms de cosmétiques et d’articles ménagers. Brand names represent valuable linguistic assets. They serve a variety of purposes, from product differentiation to corporate identity. Creativity and wit are employed in brand naming practices, frequently resulting in the formation of blends. Although blending has long been recognized as a prominent feature of advertising and marketing discourse, next to no research has hitherto been devoted to blends in brand names. Hence, the aim of this paper is to analyze approximately 600 brand names excerpted from the Portmanteau Dictionary [Thurner 1993]. Having examined the phonological, graphological, stylistic and semantic motivations, we conclude that the distinguishing features of blends in brand names are the overlap of full words and word play. In terms of particular classes of goods, blends seem to permeate the names of foods and beverages, electrical and scientific devices, toys and sporting equipment, as well as stationery, cosmetics and houseware.

Les langues spécialisées, comme on le sait, utilisent certains traits des langues naturelles afin de répondre aux besoins communicationnels des communautés spécialisées. Une façon d’identifier les caractéristiques récurrentes qui, a priori, reflètent ces utilisations particulières, consiste à compiler et analyser des corpus. Il est ainsi possible d’entreprendre de dresser une liste des caractéristiques linguistiques propres à une langue spécialisée donnée, comme l’utilisation d’un lexique particulier ou bien de traits lexico-grammaticaux spécifiques. Certaines de ces caractéristiques sont si singulières par rapport à d’autres variétés de langues, qu’elles soient spécialisées ou non, qu’on les identifiera comme étant typiques, par exemple, de l’anglais juridique, de l’anglais économique, etc. C’est pourquoi le lexique et, dans une certaine mesure, la grammaire, semblent distincts d’une langue spécialisée à l’autre, ou bien des langues non spécialisées aux langues spécialisées. On pourrait en conclure, dès lors, que lexique et grammaire font partie de ce qui définit le spécialisé d’une langue. Pourtant, comme nous le montrerons, la langue juridique partage une partie conséquente de son lexique avec d’autres langues, notamment la langue générale. Il en ressort que le lexique juridique est en grande partie polysémique. Dans quelle mesure, par conséquent, le lexique juridique est-il « juridique » ? Autrement dit, quels sont les éléments qui permettent de le qualifier ainsi ? Peut-on considérer le lexique juridique comme une caractéristique de la langue juridique ? Nous nous proposons de décrire et d’expliquer certains des emprunts lexicaux propres à l’anglais juridique, puis de nous pencher sur les difficultés d’interprétation que posent certaines lexies qui ne semblent pas spécialement « juridiques » mais qui, pourtant, sont utilisées régulièrement dans les documents juridiques et figurent, pour certaines, dans les dictionnaires juridiques. It is common knowledge that specialised languages use some aspects of “languages” to express the communicative objectives of specialised communities. Compiling and analysing specialised corpora is one way of identifying recurrent features that tend to shed light on these special uses. As a result, it is possible to draw a list of the linguistic characteristics specific to a given specialised language, such as the use of a special lexicon or special lexico-grammatical features. Some of these features are so specific compared to other varieties of languages, whether specialised or not, that they will naturally be identified as typical of, say, legal English, economic English and so on. Therefore, lexis – and, to some extent, grammar – appears to be distinct from one specialised language to another, or from non-specialised languages to specialised languages, which would tend to show that specialised lexicons, together with some grammatical features, are a defining feature of specialised languages. Yet, as we will show, much of legal lexis is shared by other types of language, in particular everyday, non-specialised language, which implies that legal lexis is necessarily polysemous. Therefore the question is: how legal/specialised is legal lexis? Or, put differently: what makes legal lexis legal? Can legal lexis be considered as a characteristic of legal language? This article will first focus on some of the borrowings that characterise legal lexis in English and then look at some of the interpretation difficulties posed by a number of lexical units that do not stand out as being “legal” but yet consistently appear in legal messages and feature, for some of them, in legal dictionaries.

L’objectif de cet article est de présenter une démarche exploratoire ayant eu lieu dans un Département LEA et prenant appui sur les descripteurs du CECR récemment développés pour la médiation linguistique. Cette démarche vise la dynamique de la combinaison des activités et des stratégies de médiation en cours de langue de spécialité avec des activités de traduction spécialisée en vue d’une amélioration de l’acquisition du lexique spécialisé. Nous nous intéresserons d’abord au statut de la traduction pédagogique en cours de langue de spécialité afin de montrer que l’introduction de la médiation linguistique en tant qu’aspect de la traduction pédagogique constitue une approche progressive et différenciée des activités de traduction et revisite le rôle de la traduction en didactique des langues. Nous procéderons ensuite à une proposition didactique en émettant l’hypothèse que les activités de médiation dans un cours de langue de spécialité fonctionnent en complémentarité avec le cours de traduction spécialisée, renforçant la compréhension et l’acquisition du lexique spécialisé. The purpose of this article is to present an exploratory approach which took place in an Applied Foreign Languages Department, based on the recently developed CEFR descriptors for cross-linguistic mediation. This approach focuses on the dynamics of the combination of activities and mediation strategies in a specialized language class with activities of specialized translation in order to improve the acquisition of the specialized vocabulary. We will first focus on the status of pedagogical translation in the specialized language class in order to show that the introduction of linguistic mediation as an aspect of pedagogical translation is a progressive and differentiated approach to translation activities and revisits the role of translation into language teaching. We will then proceed to a didactic proposal by hypothesizing that the mediation activities in a specialized language course work in complementarity with the specialized translation course reinforcing the understanding and acquisition of specialized vocabulary.

Le lexique spécialisé des militaires américains comprend un technolecte officiel, des nomenclatures techniques, des codes tactiques, ainsi qu’un jargon riche et diversifié. Créé spontanément au sein des unités de combat, ce dernier procède de multiples matrices lexicogéniques, dont cette étude propose une nouvelle typologie. Métaphores et abréviations représentent une proportion importante au sein d’une liste de 190 items lexicaux emblématiques du jargon militaire américain ; ce dernier est doté de plusieurs rôles institutionnels : instrument de cohésion sociale, souvent porteur d’une charge humoristique, il peut aussi receler des récits implicites, porter des jugements négatifs sur l’institution militaire, ou des stéréotypes liés à la condition de soldat, mais aussi servir de code verbal et de signe de reconnaissance entre membres d’une même communauté militaire. L’élaboration de « diagrammes de rôles » permet de visualiser la part respective de ces six fonctions pour un même item lexical. Specialized lexis used by American military personnel includes an official technolect, technical nomenclatures, tactical codes, as well as an abundant, diversified jargon. The latter is spontaneously created by the members of military units, and relies on several lexicogenic matrices, which we attempt to classify in this study by reformulating available descriptions of lexicogenic mechanisms. Metaphors and abbreviations account for a significant proportion of the 190 items in our dataset. An analysis of the institutional roles played by U.S. military jargon was also carried out: alongside bonding, humor and encryption, this lexical material also serves to recount implicit narratives, express negative stance about the military, and formulate stereotypes about the constraints of military life. Building “role diagrams” allows to visualize the balance between these six roles for an individual lexical item.

International audience; We have been studying the professional and scientific discourse of speech and language therapists (SLTs) for more than ten years. One of our projects currently focuses on the identification of what we will refer to as central terms among French speech therapists. These lexical units are used in a particular way by SLTs. They may be considered as very typical in that they tend to contribute to the characterisation of SLT practice. The aim of our study is first to establish a reproducible method for selecting terms that are useful for the characterisation of SLT practice, and then to contribute to the definition of its terminology.A list of 21 lexical units was drawn up by one of the authors (who is also a SLT), and submitted to a panel of other SLT experts. Concurrently, we developed a corpus-based method in order to identify and describe the use of central terms in SLT discourse. Usual analyses on concordances were conducted, as well as frequency measures and examination of regular expressions. We used a corpus built during the OrthoCorpus project. The corpus contains 850 scientific articles which were published between 1997 and 2014 in the French SLT journal entitled Rééducation Orthophonique.In this article, we describe each additional step we took and the results we found for eight of the examined lexical units. Our results are consistent for four units. We then conclude on the consequences these results may have on the future of our work.; Nous nous intéressons depuis une dizaine d’années au discours professionnel et scientifique des orthophonistes. Un de nos projets actuels porte sur l’identification de ce que nous appellerons désormais des termes centraux appartenant au français de l’orthophonie. Il s’agit d’unités lexicales (UL) dont l’usage est particulier dans le discours des orthophonistes et qui sont considérées comme révélatrices des pratiques de ces professionnels et chercheurs. L’objectif est la mise au point d’une méthode reproductible de sélection de termes révélateurs des pratiques de cette profession de santé, afin de nourrir la réflexion terminologique du domaine.Une liste de 21 UL a été établie par l’une des auteures (orthophoniste) et soumise à une validation par un panel d’autres experts orthophonistes. En parallèle, nous avons développé une méthodologie issue de la linguistique de corpus pour repérer et caractériser l’usage des termes centraux dans le discours des orthophonistes. Cette méthodologie se fonde sur des analyses habituelles de concordances, de fréquences et applique une forme d’étude des segments répétés. Elle s’appuie sur le corpus du projet OrthoCorpus, constitué de 850 articles scientifiques provenant de la revue Rééducation Orthophonique sur une période allant de 1997 à 2014.Le présent article expose les étapes complémentaires que nous avons mises en œuvre, ainsi que les résultats pour huit des UL examinées en détail. Les résultats sont concordants pour quatre de ces UL. Nous présentons ensuite les conséquences de ces résultats pour la suite de nos analyses.

Cette étude s’inscrit au sein d’une réflexion plus générale que nous menons depuis quelques années sur la mise en discours des perceptions. Elle cherche à remplir un double objectif : (i) déterminer comment les sujets parviennent à faire usage de la langue française dans l’expression de leurs perceptions d’une part, et (ii) comprendre comment les phénomènes sensibles ainsi décrits s’organisent en morphologies qui les configurent en structures signifiantes, d’autre part. Pour mener à bien cette entreprise, nous nous sommes tournée vers la pratique de la dégustation œnologique dont le principe consiste à interpréter, décrire et évaluer les perceptions des propriétés organoleptiques d’un vin. Nous avons ainsi collecté des commentaires de dégustation publiés dans cinq revues « œnologiques » françaises vendues en kiosque dans le but d’identifier les dispositifs communicationnels engagés par le dégustateur professionnel dans l’expression de la complexité des vins dégustés. Nous nous sommes plus particulièrement concentrée sur le lexique de la dégustation dont nous avons mesuré la pertinence grâce à une étude des parcours interprétatifs qu’ils suscitent. L’usage conjoint de la sémantique interprétative de François Rastier et de la théorie de l’iconicité de Jean-François Bordron nous a ainsi permis de soulever l’existence d’une communauté d’organisation entre la perception (qualités organoleptiques du vin) et le langage (propriétés sémantiques de la terminologie œnologique). En effet, nous constatons que ce lexique, parfois considéré comme fortement imagé, traduit sémantiquement des correspondances entre expériences perceptives relevant d’ordres sensoriels distincts. This paper is part of a wider study on the discourse on perception I have conducted in the past few years. I had two goals: (i) on the one hand, I tried to determine how people use the French language in order to talk about their perceptions; (ii) on the other hand, I wanted to understand how the perceived phenomena thus described are organized into morphological forms and become significant. To carry out this study, I decided to work on wine tasting to identify, describe and evaluate how the organoleptic qualities of a wine are perceived. I built a corpus comprising tasting notes published in five French “oenological” magazines sold in newsstands. I aimed to identify communication devices used by professional tasters to describe the complexity of the wines tasted. I particularly focused on the lexicon of taste and thus evaluated the relevance of this terminology by studying the interpretive pathways it induces. Both the interpretive semantics developed by François Rastier and Jean-François Bordron’s theory of iconicity allowed me to find the common organization between perception (the organoleptic qualities of a wine) and language (the semantic properties of the wine terminology). Indeed, I noticed that this wine terminology, sometimes considered “metaphorical”, is similar to the terminology relating to perceptions deriving from different senses.

Ces dernières années ont vu l’émergence du terme « post-vérité » pour décrire la scène politique. Ce concept renvoie à une situation dans laquelle les faits ont moins d’importance et un plus faible impact que les émotions et les croyances personnelles pour influencer l’opinion publique. Dans notre ère caractérisée de post-vérité, dans quelle mesure peut-on constater la prédominance des émotions dans les discours politiques récents ? Plus précisément, comment le lexique participe-t-il à des stratégies visant à éveiller la peur ou susciter la pitié de l’auditeur ? À travers l’étude d’un corpus portant sur la réforme des substances psychoactives aux États-Unis, l’auteur examine le rôle du lexique dans les appels aux émotions. The last few years have seen the emergence of the term “post-truth” to characterize the political scene. This concept refers to a situation where the objective facts have far less importance and impact than appeals to emotion and personal belief in order to influence public opinion. In this so-called post-truth era, to what extent can this prevalence of emotions be observed in recent political speeches? More precisely, is lexicon prone to arouse emotions? Through the study of a corpus on the topic of drug reform in the United States, the author examines the participation of loaded words to fearmongering strategies and appeals to pity.

Le figement représente un aspect fondamental du fonctionnement des langues et reste le meilleur témoin de leur vitalité. Il constitue un phénomène essentiel dans le fonctionnement du langage au point qu’on peut se demander s’il existe des assemblages réellement libres. Le nombre d’unités polylexicales dépasse largement celui des unités monolexicales appartenant à la même partie du discours. Le phénomène du figement ne se restreint pas au lexique puisqu'il a pratiquement le monopole de la grammaticalisation : il touche à la fois les domaines de la syntaxe, de la sémantique, du lexique et de la pragmatique. Dans cet article, nous allons nous intéresser au figement dans le cadre des verbes de perception en français et en japonais. Ces verbes sont très courants et importants dans le langage, en raison des phénomènes perceptifs qu’ils expriment. L’objet linguistique est ici restreint à l’étude des verbes de perception visuelle (voir, regarder, etc. ; miru, mieru, etc.). D’un point de vue extralinguistique, la vue est notre première source d’information – considérée comme objective – sur la réalité perçue. La majorité des informations que nous recevons passent par nos yeux. On comprend donc l’intérêt que présente la perception visuelle du point de vue linguistique. Le champ lexical relatif à la vue est significativement plus abondant que celui des autres sens. Frozenness is a fundamental aspect of how languages function and remains the best indicator of their vitality. It is such an essential phenomenon in language functioning that one can wonder if free strings do exist. Polylexical units largely outnumber monolexical units belonging to the same parts of speech. The phenomenon of fixedness cannot be restricted to the lexicon since it has practically the monopoly of grammaticalization: it also concerns the domains of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. In this article, we are interested in fixedness within the context of perception verbs both in French and in Japanese. Such verbs are very frequent and important in language because of the perceptual phenomena they express. The linguistic object is here restricted to the study of visual perception verbs (voir, regarder, etc.; miru, mieru, etc.). From an extralinguistic point of view, sight is man’s primary source of information - considered as objective - on perceived reality. The eyes are the main sensory organs providing information on the real, which explains why visual perception is highly interesting from a linguistic viewpoint. The lexical field relating to sight is significantly richer than that of the other senses.

Empirical Verification of the Polish Formula of Text DifficultyThe aim of the study was to verify the accuracy of the formula for assessing the difficulty of texts written in Polish (Pisarek 1969). The study involved 1,309 persons aged between 15 and 84. 15 texts were used, each approximately 300 words long, representing different subjects and varied difficulty level. Text comprehension was checked with multiple choice tests, the cloze procedure and open-ended questions. Significant correlations between the difficulty of a text and its comprehension were found (rmc(15) = -0.529, p = 0.043; ropen = -0.519, p = 0.047; rcloze = -0.656, p = 0.008). The results confirmed relative accuracy and usefulness of Pisarek's readability formula. The discussion includes proposed ways of improving the current form of the formula.

On Redundancy in Describing Linguistic SystemsThe notion of system of linguistic elements figures prominently in most post-Saussurian linguistics up to the present. A “system” is the network of the contrastive (or, distinctive) features each element in the system bears to the remaining elements. The meaning (valeur) of each element in the system is the set of features that are necessary and jointly sufficient to distinguish this element from all others. The paper addresses the problems of “redundancy”, i.e. the occurrence of features that are not strictly necessary in describing an element in a system. Redundancy is shown to smuggle into the description of linguistic systems, this infelicitous practice illustrated with some examples from the literature (e.g. the classical phonemic analysis of Russian by Cherry, Halle, and Jakobson, 1953). The logic and psychology of the occurrence of redundancy are briefly sketched and it is shown that, in addition to some other problems, redundancy leads to a huge and unresolvable ambiguity of descriptions of linguistic systems (the Buridan’s ass problem).

Lexical Means in Communicating Emotion in Suicide Notes - on the Basis of the Polish Corpus of Suicide NotesPolish Corpus of Suicide Notes (PCSN) is a relatively large set of authentic suicide notes that are linguistically annotated on several levels. In order to identify features characteristic for this genre we compared PCSN with the collected subcorpus of counterfeited suicide notes. In this paper we focus on the lexical means of expressing emotions. Our goal was to analyse ways of expressing emotions in this specific genre. Our initial list of lexical markers was based on Markowski’s list of the lexis common for different genres. The list was next expanded with the help of the plWordNet 2.0 — a lexico-semantic network. The expansion was based on the manually selected noun and verb hypernymy branches according to their correspondence to the elements of the initial list. For words from the extended list, a quantitative analysis was performed for both authentic and fake suicide notes. We have also analysed the use of the lexical markers of emotions, feelings and emotional states, as well as emotion operators, and ways of expressing personal evaluation, affection and hate.

Digital Lexicographic Systems and Traditional Paper Dictionaries (From Traditional Paper Dictionaries to Digital Lexicographic Systems)Main problems of modern lexicography are under analysis. The theory of lexicographical systems is presented as well as its applications for the description of the structure of lexicographical systems for new digital Ukrainian Explanatory Dictionary and Etymological Dictionary of Ukrainian Language. The concept of virtual lexicographical laboratories is presented. The implementation of two virtual lexicographical laboratories is given (the first for Ukrainian Explanatory Dictionary and next for Etymological Dictionary of Ukrainian Language).

Digital Corpora and their Applications in Semantic Studies and LexicographyThe paper describes the first Bulgarian-Polish digital resources — parallel and comparable corpora, and their applications in the semantic studies and lexicography for creation of Bulgarian-Polish digital dictionary, a significant part of these bilingual resources. Some examples show how valuable the links between the bilingual aligned corpus and the digital dictionary are. The first Bulgarian-Polish digital resources are the main result of collaborative work between the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI-BAS) and the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (ISS-PAS), established for the first time in 2006.
