- Abstract
Teaching History of Dentistry and Medicine in dental curricula has declined over the past half century. The cause of this decline is a lack of expertise, time in a crowded curriculum and a decline in interest in the humanities among dental students. The current paper describes a model of teaching History of Dentistry and Medicine at New York University College of Dentistry, a model that could be replicated at other schools., (Copyright 2023 © American Academy of the History of Dentistry.)

George Washington's dentures are well known but understudied. This article examines the first president's extant dentures along with medical texts, satirical prints, portraits, novels, and elocution manuals that circulated around the Atlantic to argue that, by concealing his tooth loss, Washington's dentures enabled him to perform republican virtue. Inserting Washington's false teeth into early Americans' larger cultural interest in deception, made evident in trompe l'oeil painting, reveals the ways that these new citizens accepted some amount of dissimilation in their republic in the name of politeness. Finally, considering the fact that Washington paid slaves for teeth that were then probably used in his dentures, the article examines his prostheses from the perspective of both the presidential wearer and the men and women he enslaved. Objective This study aimed to establish the current situation, intellectual base, hotspots, development trends, and frontiers of oral health literacy (OHL) from the literature. Methods We analyzed 1505 bibliographic records dated between January 1990 and December 2020 retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection and the Scopus database. We used CiteSpace for word frequency analysis, co-occurrence analysis, co-citation analysis, clustering analysis, and burst analysis. Results The total number of publications increased year-on-year, with the majority of publications coming from the USA. Most studies focused on the relationship between (oral) health literacy and oral health, and the development of OHL instruments. The top 10 keywords by frequency were “health literacy”, “oral health”, “attitude to health”, “dental caries”, “adult”, “children”, “dental care”, “knowledge”, “questionnaire”, and “adolescent”. The keyword with the highest burst intensity was “dental health education”. Conclusions OHL research is a thriving field. The field is focused on the development of an OHL instrument and health promotion practice. Strategic cooperation among countries, institutions, authors, hospitals, and communities will be important to encourage further OHL research and address oral health problems.

The article explores the historical chronicle of endodontics. It mentions that endodontics was referred to as pathodontia or root canal therapy in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the twentieth century's first part. It states that Dr. Harry B. Johnston, a lecturer and clinician in the early twentieth century, developed the term endodontics from the Greek word "en" which means in or within, and "odous" which means tooth.

Focusing on the period from the close of the 19th century to the 1930s, the article reveals the interplay between the establishment of a particular field of knowledge - in this case, dentistry - and regulatory legislation in Argentina. The analysis explores professional associations and their relations with degree-granting institutions, the regulation of dental practice, and the social and legal legitimization of the field. Emphasizing issues of social construction, the article examines sociological, anthropological, and historical aspects of the process of professionalization and endeavors to identify the actors and models of knowledge involved. Above all, the article looks at the dynamics entailed in defining an area that had to overcome obstacles to gain monopoly of a practice. In so doing, other health-care practitioners were shut out while relations between the medical field and the State were governed by ambivalence.

- Abstract
Numerous attempts have been made in the periodical publications on the history of «Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry named after A.I. Evdokimov» to trace its roots back to the First Moscow Dentistry School. founded by I.M. Kovarsky in 1892, as the State Institute of Dentistry (which, as a result of various reorganizations had been renamed as MSMSU) was established in the school building. This reasoning does not seem entirely convincing, however, after analyzing some facts from the history of the First Moscow School of Dentistry and biography of its founder I.M. Kovarsky, the authors conclude that there is a historical connection between these educational institutions.

Equine dentistry has been practiced for almost 3000 years, making it one of the oldest areas of equine health care. Progress has been slow and mirrored changes seen in human medical care. Many horsemen practiced equine dentistry during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Most of what was known then concentrated on sharp enamel points and abnormal dental occlusal wear. This changed slowly in the late twentieth century as research in equine dentistry increased. Today, veterinarians performing equine dentistry focus on detailed oral examination and base treatment for proper diagnosis of orthodontic, endodontic, periodontal, or other forms of dental disease.

The rationale that underpins volunteering has long fascinated behavioral scientists. James Meyrick Croker's personal life, professional career and community engagement conform to the classic twentieth century model for professional behavior. Accordingly, the authors use historical methods of investigation to evaluate the influences on and the legacies from a remarkable contribution to the professions and the community. The narrative demonstrates elements of altruism, collaboration, conviction, compassion, drive, entrepreneurialism, familial and grammar school influence, leadership, pragmatism and vision. Croker's professional and community service was multi-organizational. Concurrent demands on his time warranted discipline, energy and expertise. For the behavioral scientist, achievement, affiliation, nature and nurture appear relevant to the outcome. Available archives provide no evidence of ego-driven motivation. Leadership style was transformational not transactional. Major legacies to the national and state Australian Dental Associations are

Dental modification is a cultural based display of personal adornment and social status with a long history, widely practiced. Among Australian Aboriginal cultures dental modification appears to have been limited to exarticulation. Although it is not known if the practice was introduced to Australian or arose in isolation the archaeological record hints at Australian contexts that predate those elsewhere. Exarticulation, along with many aspects of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle, was abandoned after European colonization.

Abstract: Projected in several stages, the building of the School of Dentistry was inaugurated in 1940, fulfilling one of the wishes of the community of dentists in Uruguay. The construction made transparent its functional and structural logic, used industrialized elements and opted for abstraction in its finishes. In addition, it practically lacked elements of classics, which denoted once again its claim to objectivity. This, with its inescapable aesthetic load, referred to the world of machines, the scientific revolution and precision, a world of which dentistry, as a discipline, was not alien. However, the different projects of the building show that its designer did not always support these ideas and played with more expressive projects, with allusions to other architectural traditions.

Anatomy, comparative anatomy and embryology are fundamental to taxonomy and evolutionary biology. In the mid-nineteenth century many anatomists and zoologists made major contributions to more than one of these disciplines and a surprising number of them were also histologists. Historical accounts of discoveries and developments in anatomy, and in particular dental histology, rarely consider broader contributions and have tended to be concerned with establishing historical priority about who discovered or described what first. The period 1830 to 1840 saw new developments in light microscopy that enabled studies of histology, cellular pathology and embryology. It also saw a shift away from older ideas such as Naturphilosophie and vitalism towards a more rigorous experimental approach to scientific investigation. Many scientists with diverse research interests were working in parallel on comparative dental histology and were in many cases largely unaware of each other's work. One researcher, Anders Retzius, travelled widely across Europe, corresponded regularly with his scientific colleagues and, probably unbeknownst to himself in his own lifetime, made a lasting contribution to dental histology. Anders Retzius was a clinician, an anatomist, a comparative anatomist, a histologist and latterly an anthropologist. His life and career spanned the whole of this fast-moving period in the history of anatomy and histology.

Charles Octavius Vidgen was the Superintendent of the Brisbane Dental Hospital, c1917-1945. Hitherto, commentators' reviews rely on imposing but narrow streams of evidence to either ignore Vidgen's influence on the dental profession or portray it as both peripheral and controversial. In this account, the authors use historical method to provide a revisionist account of Vidgen's professional profile and, to a lesser extent, a character resurrection. Vidgen was probably introverted. His orientation relating to dental education became obsolete, inappropriate and disruptive. Vidgen's actions, beliefs and values incurred sustained and organized opposition from academe, the Australian Dental Association Queensland Branch, the Odontological Society of Queensland and some private practitioners. The sociopolitical context, namely the Great Depression and affiliated reconstruction, the community's demand for government-administered dental services, World War II, twenty-five years of continuous Australian Labor Party government in Queensland, Edward Hanlon's authoritarianism and the emergence of a welfare state were also relevant to Vidgen's becoming a nonconformist, nonjoiner and an outcast. However, the authors posit that, for the socially disadvantaged and the regionally and remotely domiciled, Vidgen was a humanitarian and a quiet social reformer who, under Hanlon's authority and tutelage, pioneered enduring changes to the delivery of dental services across Queensland.

Vikings with artificially modified teeth have previously been documented in the south-eastern parts of Scandinavia and in England. In a project dealing with life in the Mälaren Valley in Sweden during the period ad 750-1100, new cases of people with modified maxillary teeth were observed. The hypothesis that the practice was entirely associated with adult men dating to the Viking Age was tested. The new cases demonstrate that the habit extended to eastern-central Sweden, including the proto-town of Birka, perhaps as early as in the middle of the eighth century. Additionally, cases from Sigtuna show that the practice may have ended as late as the beginning of the twelfth century. A microanalysis, using a scanning electron microscope, showed the heterogeneous character of the modifications. The affected individuals were all adult men, similar to previously published cases. Some of the men are associated with weapons and violent acts and the cases from Sigtuna were all from cemeteries with a possible association with lower social strata. However, discrepancies in archaeological contexts and in the characteristics of the modifications suggest temporal and spatial variation in the social meaning of the modifications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The most original contribution made by the kalian School to the study of caries aetiology is undoubtedly the "trophomicrobic theory" proposed by Arturo Beretta, the first teacher of dentistry at the University of Bologna in 1918. This article brings biographical and bibliographical notes about Beretta (who was, among other things, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Bologna and Senator), and summarises the principles of his theory, which adds to Miller's "chemical-parasitic" theory of caries-predisposing properties of the enamel and host saliva. It also recalls the work of major Italian and non-Italian researchers who have used or modified Beretta's idea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Minimally invasive periodontal procedures have been reported to produce excellent clinical results. Visualization during minimally invasive procedures has traditionally been obtained by the use of surgical telescopes, surgical microscopes, glass fibre endoscopes or a combination of these devices. All of these methods for visualization are less than fully satisfactory due to problems with access, magnification and blurred imaging. Clinical Innovation A videoscope for use with minimally invasive periodontal procedures has been developed to overcome some of the difficulties that exist with current visualization approaches. This videoscope incorporates a gas shielding technology that eliminates the problems of fogging and fouling of the optics of the videoscope that has previously prevented the successful application of endoscopic visualization to periodontal surgery. In addition, as part of the gas shielding technology the videoscope also includes a moveable retractor specifically adapted for minimally invasive surgery. Discussion The clinical use of the videoscope during minimally invasive periodontal surgery is demonstrated and discussed. Conclusion The videoscope with gas shielding alleviates many of the difficulties associated with visualization during minimally invasive periodontal surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Materials used in the body, especially the materials used in various oral cavity regions should be stable and passive without any interactions with the body tissues or fluids. Dental amalgam, composite resins and dental cements are the materials of choice with such properties. The first attempts to produce active materials, which could interact with the human body tissues and fluids were prompted by the concept that fluoride-releasing materials exert useful effects in the body. The concept of using the "smart" materials in dentistry has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. Conventional glass-ionomer (GI) cements have a large number of applications in dentistry. They are biocompatible with the dental pulp to some extent. GI is predominantly used as cements in dentistry; however, they have some disadvantages, the most important of which is lack of adequate strength and toughness. In an attempt to improve the mechanical properties of the conventional GI, resin-modified glass-ionomers have been marketed, with hydrophilic monomers, such as hydroxyethyl methacrylated (HEMA). Some recent studies have evaluated GI with bioactive glass in its structure to validate the claims that such a combination will improve tooth bioactivity, regeneration capacity and restoration. There is ever-increasing interest in the application of bioactive materials in the dental field in an attempt to remineralize affected dentin. The aim of this review article is to evaluate these materials and their characteristics and applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Discussions regarding the use of hypnotism in dentistry featured prominently in dental journals and society proceedings during the decades around the turn of the twentieth century. Many dentists used hypnotic suggestion either as the sole anesthetic for extractions or in conjunction with local and general anesthetics for excavation and cavity filling. With the heralding of humanitarian dentistry and improved local anesthesia around 1905, a number of dentists advocated using suggestion psychology to calm nervous patients and increase their comfort and satisfaction levels while undergoing dental procedures. The practice of hypnotic suggestion with local and general anesthesia in providing patients with increasingly painless procedures constituted the earliest variety of behavioral dentistry, a discipline not fully developed until the closing decades of the twentieth century. Hypnosis and suggestion became driving forces for psychological applications in the formative years of behavioral dentistry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dental historian is fortunate to have Charles Allen and his Treatise of 1685/6. His value lies less in the practical content of the work but more in his knowledge of general and dental anatomy, and in the evidence of an enquiring mind. The author tackles developmental anatomy, physiology and pathology in his chosen subject. Without its unassailable provenance it would be difficult to believe that it was written in the 17th century. - Abstract
The history of dentistry and medicine has a deep and ancient bond with the history of anatomy. From the ancient times to the present, the study of the human body represents the basis for research and clinical therapy. The historical contribution of anatomists to the development of dental medicine also helped in its characterization as an integrated but special and independent branch of medicine. From Galen's studies on animals to the discoveries of dental hard tissues characteristics using a microscope, this paper provides a brief literature review of how anatomy broadly contributed to the development of the dental sciences and how it still allows us to direct critical and fundamental anatomical-clinical paths for modern patient care. The history of the anatomy of teeth, description of skull bones, maxillary sinus characterization, the salivary glands, the tongue and labial musculature, and the microscopic anatomy of dental hard tissues will be examined. Historical research on the understanding of and progress in the oral field is of utmost importance in current clinical practice, thus inducing a future orientation in research. Most of the research especially that connected to the more distant historical periods has seen as main characters great personalities of morphological sciences, which contributes constituted fundamental basis for dental clinical aspects. Through a punctual and continuous historical assay, the ancient insights are reconnected to more recent knowledge and distinct research, thus permitting a detailed reconstruction of the historical-anatomical course in the progress of knowledge regarding the oral cavity and related anatomical structures., (© 2022 American Association for Clinical Anatomists and the British Association for Clinical Anatomists.)

The author comments on traits related to the article "The X-RAY in Dental Practice," by C. Edmund Kells. His commentary focuses on Kells, who was among the pioneers of modern health care. He also suggests that the article provides a window into a segment of medical and dental thinking and practice of the time and often repeats his commitment to the preservation of oral health and the dentition. It also states that much of the article deals with the "crime," as he put it, of focal infection.
