In this article we examine the notion of aphorization (Maingueneau, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012) in printed magazines of wide circulation in Brazil and in France. By aphorization we should understand an utterance that, detached from a text, is (re)used as a title, an intertitle or a photo caption. The aphorizations can be both by strong highlighting, in which the detached utterances break with the source text, and by weak highlighting, in which the highlighted utterances come close to the source text. It is weak highlighting that interests us here, since the proximity with the source text greatly facilitates the work of checking the fidelity of the detached utterance. Our hypothesis is that the use of aphorization in printed media is a resource to manipulate the readers, especially through the changes that this kind of utterance undergoes in the process of highlighting. Thus, it is our main goal to investigate the different changes that occur when a detached utterance is turned into aphorisation, as well to discuss the meaning effects produced in such a process. From the theoretical viewpoint, we base our research on French Discourse Analysis, articulating it, sometimes, with contributions from French Semiotics (in its standard and tensive “versions”)., Neste artigo, examinamos o fenômeno da aforização (Maingueneau, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012) em revistas impressas de grande circulação no Brasil e na França. Por aforização devemos entender um enunciado que, destacado de um texto, é (re)utilizado como legenda de foto, título ou intertítulo. As aforizações podem ser por destacamento forte, quando perdem o elo com o texto fonte, e por destacamento fraco, quando se encontram no mesmo espaço do texto fonte. É esse segundo tipo de aforizações que nos interessa aqui, tendo em vista que a proximidade com o texto fonte permite conferir a fidedignidade do recorte feito. Isso porque nossa hipótese é a de que a utilização da aforização na mídia impressa é um recurso para manipular os leitores, tendo vista que os aforizadores, no processo de destacamento, podem alterar o que foi efetivamente dito, de modo a aumentar a curiosidade ou o interesse desses leitores. É, pois, nosso objetivo apreender as diferentes formas de alteração que ocorrem no processo de destacamento em revistas brasileiras e francesas, buscando evidenciar os efeitos de sentido produzidos. Do ponto de vista teórico, fundamentamo-nos na análise do discurso francesa, fazendo-a dialogar, em alguns momentos, com a semiótica francesa (nas “versões” standard e tensiva).

This paper reports findings from a study on the discourse functions of basic wh-clefts such as what our brains do is complicated information processing in 160 lectures drawn from the British Academic Spoken English (BASE) corpus. Like much linguistic research on this academic genre, the investigation is motivated by the need to gain a better understanding of language use in lectures to aid effective English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course design. To this end, the composition of the wh-clauses was analysed for its main constituents (subjects, verb phrases and modality) and the clefts were grouped according to their apparent main function and subfunction within the lecture discourse. The results show that basic wh-clefts mostly serve to highlight aspects of content information and there was also disciplinary variation in their use. Implications for EAP course design are discussed.

The advent of multimedia provides new and untested tools for improving team training. Specifically, technologies now allow for easy application of visual augmentation to computer displays that may enhance performance and learning. However, not enough is known about the implementation of display augmentation techniques which lead to enhanced team performance. An approach receiving attention is highlighting display elements. The objective of the current study was to determine if the use of display augmentation, specifically highlighting important display characteristics, during a training intervention could improve performance on a team task. It was hypothesized that participants in the highlighted condition would perform better than those in the other two conditions.

Bakalářská práce se zabývá metodami zviditelnění původního austenitického zrna v ocelích. Cílem bylo popsat základní metody a prakticky je demonstrovat na vzorcích. Teoretická část se zabývá významem austenitického zrna a jeho velikosti, základními metodami zviditelnění austenitických zrn a v krátkosti i metodami počítání velikosti zrna. Praktická část obsahuje fotografie a komentáře ke vzorkům, které byly připraveny vybranými metodami popsanými v teoretické části. V závěru práce je uvedeno srovnání našich výsledků s externími zdroji, případně rozšiřující komentáře k použitelnosti jednotlivých metod., This thesis deals with methods of revealing prior austenite grains in steels. The objective was to describe and demonstrate these basic methods on samples. The theoretical part deals with the importance of austenite grain and its size, with description of base methods of revealing austenite grains, and with methods of determination of grain size. The practical part consists of pictures and commentary of samples wich were made with some of the base methods described in the theoretical part. Conclusion consists of comparison of our and external results and also expanding commentary on individual methods.
