102. Enclosure and exposure : locating the 'house without walls'
- Author
-
Sutherland, Annie and Sutherland, Annie
- Abstract
This chapter explores medieval exegetical and affective characterizations of the birthplace of Christ. It focuses in particular on evocations of this birthplace as an exposed, liminal location and argues that the radical exposure endured by Christ at the moment of his birth was crucial to medieval understandings of the significance of the Incarnation. But it also points out that its condition of openness is always in a dialectical relationship with its capacity to enclose and protect.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
Simon Lee examines Jesus'transfiguration story found in the narrative account of Mark, tracing the development of its multiple readings through the first two centuries of the Christian era. The transfiguration story is especially interesting for the study of early Christianity, since the story reveals Jesus'divine glory in his lifetime. This study pays special attention to texts in which Peter is described as being the main witness to the event - the Synoptic Gospels, 2 Peter, Apocalypse of Peter and Acts of Peter. It also analyzes 2 Corinthians 3, where Paul explains believers'transformation on the basis of the comparison between Jesus'glory and Moses'glory. In comparing Paul's account with that of Mark, this study shows that there are some common theological patterns or ideas behind their accounts and that both inherited certain views from early Jesus traditions.

ENGLISH: The following article addresses three exegetical impulses which should be understood as food for thought to religious education. The first concentrates on the relation between exegesis and religious education because of the importance of reflecting on the concrete design of this special relation. The second centers what is indeed the centre of exegesis and religious education: the biblical text itself and the question of its real role and ways to handle it. Finally follows the presentation of a model of interaction with texts trying to equally respect all participants of this process. Simultaneously, this approach arranges a scope for the concrete biblical text allowing it to speak. This model is composed of three central steps: analysis (an exactly methodic procedure), interpretation (based on analysis, posing the question of meaning) and appropriation (individually existential meaning).

This chapter examines the meaning of the term aperire (to open) in the schools of the twelfth century and within early scholastic thought. It argues for a shift from a traditional understanding of opening as a revelation received from God, towards a more technical definition of opening as applying dialectical logic to a text. The act of opening was employed polemically, both in debates between scholastic masters and to distinguish Christian from Jewish exegetical practices. 110.

- Abstract
The theme of this article is the two narratives of the Flood of the Hebrew Bible, which, despite having been sewn into a composition, can be relatively easily separated and recovered. The purpose of the article is therefore to recover the two flood narratives of the Hebrew Bible, to demonstrate its completeness and to propose historical-social interpretation for each one of them. The text of Gn 6,5-9,17 was translated, the editorial glosses were identified, each narrative was reconstituted and considered complete and ready for the hermeneutical procedure. It is concluded that, written at the end of the sixth century, the first narrative, here called "Elohist monarchical narrative of the flood", had as its function the refoundation of the government of the golah, on his return from Babylon, while, written in the mid-fifth century, the second narrative, here called "Yahwist priestly narrative of the flood", served to introduce the expiatory sacrifice in Jerusalem, then ruled by the priestly body. This article aims to perform an exegetical analysis of Isaiah 47.1-11, revealing the poetic criticism of the Jewish prophet against the domination and power misuse of the Babylonian empire along with the announcement of its final fall. First, the literary analysis examines the structure of the text and rhetorical aspects of author's speech in Isaiah 47. Then the historical context explains the socio-religious environment of the audience to which the prophet addresses, in which a large group of Jews felt drawn to follow the gods of their rulers, instead of relying on Yahweh, the nation's divinity. Finally, the content analysis investigates, in detail, the message proclaimed by the Jewish prophet, revealing both the belief in the universal sovereignty of Yahweh as the transitory aspect of self-confident Chaldean empire. CHRISTIAN spirituality , *BIBLICAL figures , *DEMONOLOGY , *MIRACLES (Christianity) , *CANAANITES - Abstract
This article presents a rereading of the drama lived out by a mother who passed through all the social and spiritual barriers imposed on her in order to attain, in Jesus, the miracle for her daughter who lived oppressed by a demon. After having passed over all the barriers: geographic, political, economic, ethnic and religious, the Canaanite woman still had to break the gender barriers to reach Jesus. Finally, arriving desperately to Jesus, she implored for a miracle, but he did not answer a word. Received by the silence of Jesus and his „apparent" insensitivity, the woman still had to support the prejudice of the disciples and an „apparently" particularist word from Jesus. However, on her knees she demonstrated faith and debated with Jesus in a wise and intelligent way finally conquering victory. This text is more than a report of a miracle, since Matthew preserved it to show Christ's position and that of the apostles with the Gentiles, and especially with the woman. In this way, based on bibliographic review, the goal is to show how the text ressignifies the place of the Gentiles within the Christian community, equally giving a new place to the woman in the community of faith. Since the final question is: „faced with all the cultivated prejudice against the woman in the world of Jesus' time, what was Jesus' attitude toward women in his ministry?". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

113. A Bíblia começou em Israel Norte - Gênesis 49,13-(18)24a.

- Abstract
Extrabiblical references, such as the Steles of Nimrud, Mesa and Dan, prove the greatness of Northern Israel. However, neither archaeology nor literary studies of the Bible have been able to prove sufficiently the existence of texts written in Northern Israel. On the one hand, we have not found complex texts in tablets, steles or walls that could prove the existence of a body of scribes in the court of Samaria or in some royal sanctuary, such as Bethel. On the other hand, if they existed, they were incorporated into the biblical literature of Judah in such a way that they lost their identity. Uncovering these writings of Israel North remaining in the Bible is still a task to be done. One among these writings we believe to be Gen 49:13-(18)24a. Here, not only Judah was included in the great unity (Gn 49:1-28), formerly absent, but also Ephraim was excluded and replaced by Joseph. Thus a text which formerly served to give identity to Northern Israel with praises to Ephraim, was decharacterized to exalt Judah. This is what this article, through exegesis, purports to demonstrate. This task is relevant because Northern Israel hides a more heterogeneous culture than Judah in the south, closer to the history of peoples of Latin America and Caribbean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The commentary on the epistle to the Romans by Origen, completely involved with Paul's theology, is the result of the controversies that surrounded him and it is at the same time an attempt to systematize Paul's writings, since it was believed that Pauline texts contained gaps that needed to be filled and interpreted, in order to make them clearer and more intelligible for any reader. Controversial topics such as the comparison between natural law and mosaic law; literal or spiritual and mystical exegesis; free will and God's omniscience; the pre-existence of the soul, which contributed to Origin's later reputation as a heretic author, highlighted the great moment of the Alexandrine, already in his maturity. Exposed Word and the source of theology: Pierre Coton’s combatant exegesis (1600-1620). The source of theology is biblical, but exegesitcal works do not originate only in teaching in Sacred Scripture classes. It is tried in controversies between confessions, and it is also in this context that theological expertise plays a decisive role and draws part of its legitimacy, all the more so since it is based on philology. The case of the Protestant vernacular Bibles attacked by Pierre Coton is emblematic of theological practice outside classroom. Coton’s exegetical works have been neglected by historiography, even though they can considerably help renew the image of Henry IV's famous confessor. Moreover, these publications bear witness to a major tension within the very publicization of the theological exercise, which takes scholars as witnesses and opens up a space for discussion that at least in part escapes the magisterium.

International audience; If the figures arranged in a circle evoke the exchange, a legacy of Roman assemblies, the gesture of speech or the word of authority are rarely depicted in the images of assemblies, councils and synods gathered in this study (Utrecht, Unisersiteitsbibliotheek, Ms Bibl. Rhenotraiectinae I Nr 3, Fol 90v); Vercelli, Biblioteca Capitolare, ms. 165, fol. 2v-5r), but also that the handing over of the Bile to Charles the Bald, attended by an assembly of clergymen (Paris, BnF, ms. Lat. 1, fol. 432r). This images emphasize yhe importance of the written word: the scribes write, record. The word is well represented but in a written and sacred form, like "the word of Christ thought as word and, at the same time, transmitted in writing".; Si les personnages disposés en cercle évoquent l'échange, héritage des assemblées romaines, le geste d'allocution ou la parole d'autorité sont rarement figurées dans les images des assemblées, des conciles et des synodes réunies dans cette étude (synodes [Utrecht, Unisersiteitsbibliotheek, Ms Bibl. Rhenotraiectinae I Nr 3, Fol 90v) ; Verceil, Biblioteca Capitolare, ms. 165, fol.

In the last part of Confessions of the Flesh, Michel Foucault offers a careful analysis of the libido theory as “the stigma of the involuntary in after-fault sex” according to Saint Augustine. This subject is closely linked to the patristic and Augustinian exegesis of the book of Genesis 1:28 (“Increase and multiply”), more specifically on the question of the possible or hypothetical existence of sexual intercourse in paradise. This article intends to study the texts of Saint Augustine and their analysis by Foucault alongside the subsequent philosophical and theological interpretations that arose concerning the thoughts of the Bishop of Hippo and the French philosopher. Did Augustine (and Foucault as the reader of Saint Augustine) declare that our ancestors made love in the Garden of Eden? Is Augustinian theology of marriage and sexuality, as Foucault put it, the foundation of “the morals of the Christian West”? Can we, indeed, speak of Augustinian theology or even Christianity as a “foundation” while respecting the “genealogical” method, as Foucault developed it?

International audience; In accordance with the traditional rhetorical theory of aptum, Augustine of Hippo knows that a speaker must adapt his speech to his audience (cat. rud. 23). How does he deal with the internal diversity of the congregation, especially when the Bible verses he comments on concern one group of listeners or another? This article highlights three exegetical processes by which he applies the same scriptural text to different categories of listeners (rich and poor people, young and old people, men and women...), so that each one can respond personally to the one Word heard by all: first, offering each group a specific biblical model; second, commenting on the same biblical verse in different ways; third, assuming the differences while moving them towards a new identity, shared by all. The usual hermeneutical devices, notably tropology and typology, then take on a pragmatic function, the significance of which is highlighted by the communicative situation proper to the homily.; Conformément à la théorie rhétorique classique de l’aptum, Augustin d’Hippone sait qu’un orateur doit adapter son discours à son audience (cat. rud. 23).

Ce sens permet une lecture actualisée de l’Écriture, ecclésiale et politique., In the 16th century, Martin Bucer set out to rethink the medieval quadriga. Allegory is the meaning most questioned because of a suspicion of arbitrariness inherited from patristic exegesis. In several of his commentaries, including those on John and Zephaniah, Bucer attempts to redefine allegory. In order to marginalise it, he elaborates a new typological meaning, based on similarity of proportion, with a prophetic aim. This meaning allows an updated reading of Scripture, both ecclesial and political.

- Abstract
The renowned religious historian “preaches the gospel truth... explaining how the spiritual guide... came into being and evolved over the centuries” (Vanity Fair). As the single work at the heart of Christianity, the world's largest organized religion, the Bible is the spiritual guide for one out of every three people in the world. It is also the world's most widely distributed book and its bestselling, with an estimated six billion copies sold in the last two hundred years. But the Bible is a complex work with a complicated and obscure history. Its contents have changed over the centuries, it has been transformed by translation, and, through interpretation, has developed manifold meanings to various religions, denominations, and sects. In this seminal account, acclaimed historian Karen Armstrong discusses the conception, gestation, life, and afterlife of history's most powerful book. Armstrong analyzes the social and political situation in which oral history turned into written scripture, how this all-pervasive scripture was collected into one work, how it became accepted as Christianity's sacred text, and how its interpretation changed over time. Armstrong's history of the Bible is a brilliant, captivating book, crucial in an age of declining faith and rising fundamentalism. “Vintage Armstrong: sweeping, bold, incisive, and insightful. In eight chapters it covers the history of the writing, canonizing, and reading of the Bible... Her choice of topics is impeccable... and her brief, 23-page discussion on the rise of the Talmud is masterful.” —Choice “An excellent précis of the writing and compiling of the Bible and the ensuing centuries of biblical interpretation... one terrific little book.” —Booklist

AbstractIn this article, our task will be study the literary strategy used in composition of the narrative of meeting among Jesus and the Samaritan woman, famous episode of fourth chapter of John’s Gospel. We’ll defending the hypothesis that the author made, for to construct this narrative about Jesus, use of a master-plot, a standard scene of the Old Testament that was used all times when someone wished to tell a marriage store. We’ll see the compositional elements of this standard plot and some textual examples, and then, we can to analyze the John’s Gospel and show how the evangelist manipulated the popular literary genre for reach your own objectives. Methodologically speaking, the narrative analysis (or narratology) going to drive our reflections and exegetical analysis, keeping the focus of this research always in “implicit reader” of biblical narrative, who would to feel the surprise through to see the text driving Jesus to the own marriage, until the creative author’s turnaround at the end.Key words: Exegesis; Narratology; Bible; Primitive Christianity; John’s Gospel.

AbstractThis article offers an interpretation of Matthew 6, 19-34 starting from the analysis of forms. The poetic structure of this textual unit is highlighted so that the texts can be read according to their own stylistic framework. Besides that text, which deals specifically with economic problems in Matthew's group, the structure of the Sermon on the Mountain (Mt 5-7) is also evidence of the formal care typical of Matthew. This little sample of texts aims to delineate some images in order to know Matthew's group, in social and economic terms, within the urban environment in Galilee by the end of the 1st century, a milieu that distinguished the group from the first generation of Christians, all of them poor farmers transformed into wandering prophets. Finally, the exegesis leads to the hypothesis that, given its personal characteristics, Matthew's group is forced into a re-reading of Christian traditions in a new perspective, in which poverty is a mandatory option to this new Jewish-Christian urban movement.Key words: Gospel of Matthew; Exegesis; Primitive Phristianity; Economy; Sermon of the Mountain.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Lázara Divina Coelho.pdf: 1336936 bytes, checksum: a68843f7444e39d5da0f338b135db921 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2021-12-15 The object of this thesis is the Historical-Grammatical Method in two aspects: first, its formulation, then its applicability to a specific biblical text. It aims to demonstrate the scientific character of the Method and prove its applicability. The working hypothesis is that the Historical-Grammatical Method has a theoretical and methodological instrument capable of developing the interpretation of the biblical text. The theoretical framework is integrated by Bunge's epistemology, Augustine's principle of biblical selfinterpretation and Ernesti's historical-grammatical reading. The research has a basic and applied purpose, and is developed through a qualitative approach to the problem through bibliographic research. It demonstrates the scientific character of the Method, by reconstructing its history, from its very genesis, in the practices of biblical reading of the first Christians, through its formulation in the philological and historiographical studies of the 18th century, to the current configuration. In this path, the contribution of different areas of knowledge is identified, with the transfer of their principles and lights, for the formulation and development of the Method. The historical-grammatical sense is emphasized as the essence of the Method itself and the historical-grammatical exegesis as its realization. The first chapter applies epistemological assumptions to the Method, and demonstrates its scientific character. It uses the state of the matter to highlight the principle of biblical self-interpretation, as a formal criterion of grammaticalhistorical interpretation. By placing the Method historically, it defines it as a set of doctrinal assumptions and interpretive principles that materialize in special rules and techniques to arrive at the meaning of the text. And he describes it as endowed with considerable theoretical and methodological tools. In the second chapter, the Method is applied in the interpretation of the passage of Luke 4:16-21. The presuppositions, principles and rules then identified are taken as theoretical basis. The text is interpreted grammatically and historically. The meaning of the passage is identified as messianic, its character as the Messiah and its program as extending to humanity in all ethnicities, places and times. The formulation and scientific relevance of the Historic-Grammatical Method is confirmed, as well as its applicability to the interpretation of the biblical text O objeto desta tese é o Método Histórico-Gramatical em dois aspectos: primeiro, sua formulação, em seguida, sua aplicabilidade a um texto bíblico específico.

The objective of this dissertation is to show that Eve, as a metaphor of the lack and as a desiring subject-woman, is related to the desire for God. To do this, we will begin by pointing out that what we know of the character of Eve in the story of Genesis 3 is the result of the perception of what we will define as “The Tradition” and of her interpretation of this text. This perception, on the side of the “woman-as-an-objet”, is a reality based on the gaze of men who believe that the woman is weaker by nature, because she is incomplete, a miss, and therefore missing. By exploring how the interpretations of the Gn 3 narrative stage the figures of an Eve, sometimes dangerous, sometimes inferior, sometimes erased by the idealized figure of the Virgin Mary, we will see how the cultural a priori of an androcentric reading have deeply marked the very way of rereading the text, of hearing and understanding it. By taking in account the way this Tradition has both heard and masked the sexual difference between man and woman, our own discursive analysis of the story of Gn 3 unfolds how the figure of Eve can also become the representative of the lack that God himself desires. The lack that God desires, of which Eve is the metaphor, appears both as the necessary ingredient for life, word and desire, and as the burden that Eve must bear in order to walk the paths of her own destiny, as a woman who cannot escape the question of motherhood either. Our axis of rereading, which takes into account the dimension of the speaking subject, leads us to identify Eve’s active role. From her “not-all” posture, she takes her place in the creation of the adam as the one to whom the snake from elsewhere talks. It is with the serpent that the first dialogue is established and that Eve experiences herself as a speaking and desiring subject. Because she speaks, Eve overflows. Once the forbidden has been spoken, it becomes the place of the "inter-dit", where, between the lines, something of Eve's singular desire becomes transmissible to the adam. The transgression in act then makes it possible to look at sexual difference, making also possible the transmission of human life as an act of creation. At this point in the narration, Eve becomes a subject, a subject of desire, a woman-as-a-subject, at bay from what man wants her to be, a woman intrinsically and experientially inhabited by the question of the maternal and the motherhood. If for both men and women, motherhood is the first access to the woman, the narrative shows that a woman’s speech is dependent on this subjective structure, which makes each woman singular. Her subjectivity of being a woman with a hole in her body necessarily tends her being to the world, to the Other and to others, bringing into play both her responsibility and her ethics, of which Eve is the figure that represents them all. This dissertation therefore aims to participate in a reflection and a discussion on being a woman, no longer considered as an object to be submitted, possessed, or whose body could be reduced to procreate, but as the experience of a singular subject, a subject of desire, a being of flesh and blood whose words and desire are to be taken into account at bay from the universal discourse. We hope that our thesis will make a significant contribution to the recognition of women in their singular and subjective enunciation as participants in the becoming of the world, and that they are recognized as the breath that emerges from the lack and which breaks through the fantasy of the One.

This study presents the exegesis of the Ancients in V, 1 [10], 8-9, showing that Plotinus establishes an agreement between the mentioned authorities; all the Ancients alluded by him already knew, though implicitly and inaccurately, the doctrine of the three natures. In general, the inaccuracy of his predecessors consisted in mistaking the One for the Intellect. Following Plotinus's argument step by step, we especially try to understand the role of three philosophers among the ones mentioned. First, Plato, who is considered the most accurate certification of the former doctrines. Then, Aristotle, against whom Plotinus polemicizes, although he seems to serve as a model for the exegesis of some philosophers before Plato. Finally, Pherekydes, who alludes to the Pythagorean doctrine and perhaps to the mythical tradition as well.

- Abstract
The article highlights the presence of iconic and aniconic material worship in the Old Israel, usually taken as a religion of concepts and ideas by the advent of the "objectbook". Thus, an exegetical, iconographic and archaeological analysis of the remains of the ancient religion of biblical Israel is carried out, especially regarding these items: worship stones or mașșebot; high places or bamoth; ăšērah; and Ark of the Covenant. We intend to comprehend what the perception of materiality in the pre-exilic worship was. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The text of the Hebrew Bible as instrument of rhetorical projection of political and theological conflicts in the horizon of its production. The objective is to analyze rhetorically Ex 33:18-23, applying at the pericope hermeneutical procedures of social-historical approach and rhetoric analysis, and intending to identify possible relationships between the narrative and the historical and social horizon of its production. As methodological steps, it was translated the Hebrew text from Ex 33:18-23, it was compared with the versions in Portuguese, it was analyzed rhetorically each section of the pericope and sought to identify the elements of contact between the narrative and the historical and social worldthat produced it and serves as its semantic context. It was concluded that this is a critical and sarcastic text to priestly prerogatives that marked the political and social transformation of Judah after the Babylonian captivity. The narrative rhetorical strategy is, in the form of a request to the deity, to isolate the priestly postulated in v. 18, confronting it in v. 19-23 through three categorical denials by Yahweh. SUNNITES , *CALIPHATE , *CANONIZATION , *POLITICAL science ,QUR'ANIC criticism - Abstract
This paper studies how medieval Sunnite Muslim exegetes from al-Ṭabarī (d. 310/923) to Ibn Kaṯīr (d. 774/1373) understood the Qurʾānic term ḫalīfa and other Ḫ.L.F-derived terms. While previous scholarship has examined how exegetes generally understood the term, this paper scrutinizes the exegetical commentaries (tafsīr) chronologically in order to discern the semantic and terminological shifts accompanying different commentaries over time. It demonstrates the importance of an intertextual approach in placing tafsīr literature in dialogue with writings on the caliphate in works of theology (kalām) and law ( fiqh). Overall, the paper argues that the legal and theological development of the Sunnite theory of the caliphate provided exegetes with new clusters of terminology associated with the caliphate to enrich their commentaries on the Ḫ.L.F verses. This process was in turn catalyzed by the systematization of the caliphate discourse and the canonization of the four-caliphs thesis during the Sunnite Revival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
With the arrival of Jesus together at the humanity a new age of grace and reconciliation starts to take place. This is signaled in the first gospel ever written, especially through the cures performed by Jesus. In the healing of the paralytic (Mk 2,1-12), the forgiveness of sins precedes the healing. That because the man could have somatized the guilt of something (sin) and gotten paralytic. Mark highlights details that put in order the way of thinking of that time which attributed to God the illness' source as a sign of punishment. Still, the idea that the forgiveness of sin must be given by God alone or by accomplishment of rites deserves correction. In a house, the place of the family relations opened by Jesus, is where everything takes place. The cure is unleashed by the faith of four men who overcome barriers to get to Jesus who will only declare the forgiveness of that man's sins. The human being, the four men in this case, restores lives when forgives those unable to walk with their own legs; or even better: those who have friends are not left at the mercy of their own lot, paralyzed. Taking it as a starting point this article intends to make an exegetical study of the text of Mark that narrates the cure of the paralytic, making use of at least some historical-critical method's steps. In doing so we intend to show how the biblical text points to the consequences of forgiveness prompt by faith: the full healing (corporal and spiritual) of the person!. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Recent studies are challenging the hypothesis that NT writers mis-interpreted earlier Biblical writings, taking them out of context, and using interpretational techniques which are today considered “eisegesis”. However, biblical research is now confirming that the NT writers used the OT contextually, in continuity with the meaning found in the OT passages. It is the thesis of this article that the later Bible writers were exegetes in their biblical hermeneutics, remaining true to the Messianic meaning of those earlier biblical passages seen in their original context. I organize my discussion of “Christ in all Scripture” following Hasel’s synthesis of approaches, and under each of them I provide examples of how this approach has been utilized by Jesus and NT writers to see Christ in all OT Scripture. In light of the indicators of Christ in the Old Testament, Jesus’ sweeping claim in Luke 24 needs to be taken seriously., Recent studies are challenging the hypothesis that NT writers mis-interpreted earlier Biblical writings, taking them out of context, and using interpretational techniques which are today considered “eisegesis”.
