Abstract: The PICOSEC Micromegas detector is a precise-timing gaseous detector based on a Cherenkov radiator coupled with a semi-transparent photocathode and a Micromegas amplifying structure, targeting a time resolution of tens of picoseconds for minimum ionising particles. Initial single-pad prototypes have demonstrated a time resolution below 25 ps, prompting ongoing developments to adapt the concept for applications. The achieved performance is being transferred to robust multi-channel detector modules suitable for large-area detection systems requiring excellent timing precision. To enhance the robustness and stability of the PICOSEC Micromegas detector, research on robust carbon-based photocathodes, including Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) and Boron Carbide (B4C), is pursued. Results from prototypes equipped with DLC and B4C photocathodes exhibited a time resolution of approximately 32 ps and 34.5 ps, respectively. Efforts dedicated to improve detector robustness and stability enhance the feasibility of the PICOSEC Micromegas concept for large experiments, ensuring sustained performance while maintaining excellent timing precision.

103. Verificarlo CI: continuous integration for numerical optimization and debugging

Abstract: Floating-point accuracy is an important concern when developing numerical simulations or other compute-intensive codes. Tracking the introduction of numerical regression is often delayed until it provokes unexpected bug for the end-user. In this paper, we introduce Verificarlo CI, a continuous integration workflow for the numerical optimization and debugging of a code over the course of its development. We demonstrate applicability of Verificarlo CI on two test-case applications.

104. Pilot-Based SFO Estimation for Bistatic Integrated Sensing and Communication

Abstract: Enabling bistatic radar sensing within the context of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) for future sixth generation mobile networks demands strict synchronization accuracy, which is particularly challenging to be achieved with over-the-air synchronization. Existing algorithms handle time and frequency offsets adequately, but provide insufficiently accurate sampling frequency offset (SFO) estimates that result in degradation of obtained radar images in the form of signal-to-noise ratio loss and migration of range and Doppler shift. This article introduces an SFO estimation algorithm named tilt inference of time offset (TITO) for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based ISAC. Using available pilot subcarriers, TITO obtains channel impulse response estimates and extracts information on the SFO-induced delay migration to a dominant reference path with constant range, Doppler shift, and angle between transmit and receive ISAC nodes. TITO then adaptively selects the delay estimates that are only negligibly impaired by SFO-induced intersymbol interference, ultimately employing them to estimate the SFO. Assuming a scenario without a direct line-of-sight (LoS) between the aforementioned transmitting and receiving ISAC nodes, a system concept with a relay reflective intelligent surface (RIS) is used to create the aforementioned reference path is proposed. Besides a mathematical derivation of accuracy bounds, simulation and measurements at 26.2 GHz are presented to demonstrate TITO's superiority over existing methods in terms of SFO estimation accuracy and robustness., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

105. An implementable proximal-type method for computing critical points to minimization problems with a nonsmooth and nonconvex constraint

Abstract: This work proposes an implementable proximal-type method for a broad class of optimization problems involving nonsmooth and nonconvex objective and constraint functions. In contrast to existing methods that rely on an ad hoc model approximating the nonconvex functions, our approach can work with a nonconvex model constructed by the pointwise minimum of finitely many convex models. The latter can be chosen with reasonable flexibility to better fit the underlying functions' structure. We provide a unifying framework and analysis covering several subclasses of composite optimization problems and show that our method computes points satisfying certain necessary optimality conditions, which we will call model criticality. Depending on the specific model being used, our general concept of criticality boils down to standard necessary optimality conditions. Numerical experiments on some stochastic reliability-based optimization problems illustrate the practical performance of the method.

Abstract: The generation of propagating acoustic waves is essential for telecommunication applications, quantum technologies, and sensing. Up to now, the electrical generation has been at the core of most implementations, but is technologically limited to a few gigahertz. Overcoming this frequency limit holds the prospect of faster modulators, quantum acoustics at higher working temperatures, nanoacoustic sensing from smaller volumes. Alternatively, the optical excitation of acoustic resonators has unlocked frequencies up to 1 THz, but in most cases, the acoustic energy cannot be efficiently extracted from the resonator into a propagating wave. Here, we demonstrate a quasi-continuous and coherent source of 20 GHz acoustic phonons, based on a ridge waveguide, structured in the vertical direction as a high-Q acousto-optic resonator. The high frequency phonons propagate up to 20 $\mu$m away from the source, with a decay rate of $\sim$1.14 dB/$\mu$m. We demonstrate the coherence between acoustic phonons generated from two distant sources through spatio-temporal interference. This concept could be scaled up to a larger number of sources, which enable a new generation of optically programmed, reconfigurable nanoacoustic devices and applications.

107. On the Morse index of free-boundary CMC hypersurfaces in the upper hemisphere

Abstract: We prove results for free-boundary hypersurfaces in the upper unit hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}_{+}$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$. First we show that if the norm squared of the second fundamental form is constant, the Morse index of a free-boundary minimal hypersurface $\Sigma\subset \mathbb{S}^{n+1}_{+}$ equals: $1$ if $\Sigma$ is a totally geodesic equator, $n+1$ if $\Sigma$ is half of the Clifford torus, or it is at least $2(n+1)$ when $\Sigma$ is not totally geodesic. Next we prove an estimate for the first eigenvalue $\lambda_1$ of the second variation's Jacobi operator, and show that $\lambda_1 \leq -2n$ if $\Sigma$ is not totally geodesic, with equality iff $\Sigma$ is half of the minimal Clifford torus. Furthermore, $\lambda_1 = -n$ iff $\Sigma$ is totally geodesic. Finally, if $\Sigma$ is not totally umbilical the Morse index is at least $n+1$, with equality precisely when $\Sigma$ is the upper $\mathrm{H}$-torus. For totally umbilical hypersurfaces the Morse index is $1$. We also prove an upper bound for the first eigenvalue of free-boundary $\mathrm{CMC}$ hypersurfaces, where equality corresponds to totally umbilical hypersurfaces.

108. Polarization-controlled Brillouin scattering in elliptical optophononic resonators

Abstract: The fast-growing development of optomechanical applications has motivated advancements in Brillouin scattering research. In particular, the study of high frequency acoustic phonons at the nanoscale is interesting due to large range of interactions with other excitations in matter. However, standard Brillouin spectroscopy schemes rely on fixed wavelength filtering, which limits the usefulness for the study of tunable optophononic resonators. It has been recently demonstrated that elliptical optophononic micropillar resonators induce different energy-dependent polarization states for the Brillouin and the elastic Rayleigh scattering, and that a polarization filtering setup could be implemented to increase the contrast between the inelastic and elastic scattering of the light. An optimal filtering configuration can be reached when the polarization states of the laser and the Brillouin signal are orthogonal from each other. In this work, we theoretically investigate the parameters of such polarization-based filtering technique to enhance the efficiency of Brillouin scattering detection. For the filtering optimization, we explore the initial wavelength and polarization state of the incident laser, as well as in the ellipticity of the micropillars, and reach an almost optimal configuration for nearly background-free Brillouin detection. Our findings are one step forward on the efficient detection of Brillouin scattering in nanostructures for potential applications in fields such as optomechanics and quantum communication.

Abstract: Our main goal is to investigate supercritical Hardy-Sobolev type inequalities with a logarithmic term and their corresponding variational problem. We prove the existence of extremal functions for the associated variational problem, despite the loss of compactness. As an application, we show the existence of weak solution to a general class of related elliptic partial differential equations with a logarithmic term.

110. Evidence of thermodynamics and magnetic monopole plasma formation by photon-magnon interaction in artificial spin ice

Abstract: Artificial spin ices (ASI), containing magnetic monopole quasi-particles emerging at room temperature, have been investigated as a promising system to be applied in alternative low-power information technology devices. However, restrictions associated with the intrinsic energetic connections between opposing magnetic monopoles in conventional ASI need to be overcome to achieve this purpose. Here, photon-magnon scattering in nanomagnets is examined as an approach to locally activate the collective dynamics of interacting magnetic systems at the nanoscale. Low-power white and polarized light were employed as a new tool to manipulate magnetic monopole intensity, leading to tuning on the particles response to external magnetic field and spontaneous magnetization flipping without external field (thermodynamics). Our findings showing evidence of magnetic monopole plasma formation in a regular square ASI system are explained by an analytical model of photon-magnon conversion acting directly on the ASI nanomagnet dipole. Micromagnetic simulations based on the samples parameters and values obtained from the model present a very good qualitative correspondence between theory and observations for the investigated ASI system.

Abstract: The radiative decays $\chi_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow\psi(2S)\gamma$ and $\chi_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow J/\psi\gamma$ are used to probe the~nature of the~$\chi_{c1}(3872)$ state using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an~integrated luminosity of~9fb$^{-1}$. Using the~$B^+\rightarrow \chi_{c1}(3872)K^+$decay, the $\chi_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow \psi(2S)\gamma$ process is observed for the first time and the ratio of its partial width to that of the $\chi_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow J/\psi\gamma$ decay is measured to be $$ \frac{\Gamma_{\chi_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow \psi(2S)\gamma}} {\Gamma_{\chi_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow J/\psi\gamma}} = 1.67 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.12 \pm0.04 , $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the $\psi(2S)$ and $J/\psi$ mesons. The measured ratio makes the interpretation of the $\chi_{c1}(3872)$ state as a~pure $D^0\bar{D}^{*0}+\bar{D}^0D^{*0}$ molecule questionable and strongly indicates a sizeable compact charmonium or tetraquark component within the $\chi_{c1}(3872)$ state., Comment: 31 pages, 2 figures. 112. Rational eigenfunctions of the Hecke operators

Abstract: We study the action of the Hecke operators $U_n$ on the space $\mathcal R$ of rational functions in one variable, over $\mathbb C$. The main goal is to give a complete classification of the eigenfunctions of $U_n$. We accomplish this by introducing certain number-theoretic directed graphs, called Zolotarev Graphs, which extend the well-known permutations due to Zolotarev. We develop the theory of these Zolotarev graphs, using them to decompose the eigenfunctions of $U_n$ into certain natural finite-dimensional vector spaces of rational functions, which we call the eigenspaces. In this context, we prove that the dimension of each eigenspace is equal to the number of nodes of a cycle that belongs to its corresponding Zolotarev graph. We prove that the number of leaves of this Zolotarev graph equals the dimension of the kernel of $U_n$. We then give a novel number-theoretic formula for the number of cycles of fixed length, in each Zolotarev graph. We also study the simultaneous eigenfunctions for all of the $U_n$, and give explicit bases for all of them. In the process, we answer many questions that were set out in the work of Gil and Robins (2005). We also discover certain strong relations between these graphs and the kernel of $U_n$ acting on a subspace of $\mathcal R$; in particular, we give several equivalent conditions for the diagonalizibility of $U_n$. Finally, we prove that the classical Artin Conjecture on primitive roots is equivalent to a new conjecture here, that infinitely many of these eigenspaces have dimension $1$., Comment: 37 pages, 9 figures

113. Galaxy evolution in compact groups II. Witnessing the influence of major structures in their evolution

Abstract: Compact groups (CGs) of galaxies are extreme environments for morphological transformations and the cessation of star formation. Our objective is to understand the dynamics of CGs and how their surrounding environment impacts galaxy properties. We selected a sample of 340 CGs in the Stripe 82 region, totaling 1083 galaxies, and a control sample of 2281 field galaxies. We find that at least 27\% of our sample of CGs are part of major structures, i.e. non-isolated CGs. We find a bimodality in the effective radius ($R_e$)-S\'ersic index ($n$) plane for all transition galaxies (those with $(u-r) > 2.3$ and $n<2.5$) in CGs. Additionally, transition galaxies in isolated CGs populate more densely the $R_e-n$ plane for $n < 1.75$. In contrast, transition galaxies in non-isolated CGs have smoothly increasing $n$ values, suggesting these galaxies have already suffered morphological transformation, and primarily contribute to the distribution of more compact galaxies in the $R_e-n$ plane for all transition galaxies in CGs. We also find significant differences in the specific star-formation rate (sSFR) distribution between the late-type galaxies (LTGs) ($(u-r)<2.3$ and $n< 2.5$) in non-isolated CGs and the same type of galaxies in the control sample, suggesting that the evolution of LTGs differs in non-isolated CGs. Early-type galaxies ($(u-r)>2.3$ and $n>2.5$) and transition galaxies in non-isolated CGs have lower sSFR values and a higher fraction of quenched galaxies, compared to those in isolated CGs. Based on our results, we propose an evolutionary scenario where the major structures in which the CGs are embedded accelerate the morphological transformations of their members. Abstract: Understanding the intricate quantum spin dynamics of radical pair reactions is crucial for unraveling the underlying nature of chemical processes across diverse scientific domains. In this work, we leverage Trotterization to map coherent radical pair spin dynamics onto a digital gate-based quantum simulation. Our results demonstrated agreement between the idealized noiseless quantum circuit simulation and established master equation approaches for homogeneous radical pair recombination, identifying approximately 15 Trotter steps to be sufficient for faithfully reproducing the coupled spin dynamics of a prototypical system. By utilizing this computational technique to study the dynamics of spin systems of biological relevance, our findings underscore the potential of digital quantum simulation (DQS) of complex radical pair reactions and builds the groundwork towards more utilitarian investigations into their intricate reaction dynamics. We further investigate the effect of realistic error models on our DQS approach, and provide an upper limit for the number of Trotter steps that can currently be applied in the absence of error mitigation techniques before losing simulation accuracy to deleterious noise effects., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

115. Feasibility of Non-Line-of-Sight Integrated Sensing and Communication at mmWave

Abstract: One rarely addressed direction in the context of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) is non-line-of-sight (NLOS) sensing, with the potential to enable use cases like intrusion detection and to increase the value that wireless networks can bring. However, ISAC networks impose challenges for sensing due to their communication-oriented design. For instance, time division duplex transmission creates spectral holes in time, resulting in spectral replicas in the radar image. To counteract this, we evaluate different channel state information processing strategies and discuss their tradeoffs. We further propose an ensemble of techniques to detect targets in NLOS conditions. Our approaches are validated with experiments using a millimeter wave ISAC proof of concept in a factory-like environment. 116. Building Collaborative Learning: Exploring Social Annotation in Introductory Programming

Abstract: The increasing demand for software engineering education presents learning challenges in courses due to the diverse range of topics that require practical applications, such as programming or software design, all of which are supported by group work and interaction. Social Annotation (SA) is an approach to teaching that can enhance collaborative learning among students. In SA, both students and teachers utilize platforms like Feedback Fruits, Perusall, and Diigo to collaboratively annotate and discuss course materials. This approach encourages students to share their thoughts and answers with their peers, fostering a more interactive learning environment. We share our experience of implementing social annotation via Perusall as a preparatory tool for lectures in an introductory programming course aimed at undergraduate students in Software Engineering. We report the impact of Perusall on the examination results of 112 students. Our results show that 81% of students engaged in meaningful social annotation successfully passed the course. Notably, the proportion of students passing the exam tends to rise as they complete more Perusall assignments. In contrast, only 56% of students who did not participate in Perusall discussions managed to pass the exam. We did not enforce mandatory Perusall participation in the course. Yet, the feedback from our course evaluation questionnaire reveals that most students ranked Perusall among their favorite components of the course and that their interest in the subject has increased.

Abstract: A sample of $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb$^{-1}$ and collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Run 2, is used to measure the ratio of the lifetime of the $\Xi^-_b$ baryon to that of the $\Lambda^0_b$ baryon, $r_{\tau}\equiv\tau_{\Xi^-_b}/\tau_{\Lambda^0_b}$. The value ${r_{\tau}=1.076\pm0.013\pm0.006}$ is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This value is averaged with the corresponding value from Run 1 to obtain ${r_{\tau}^{\rm Run\,1,2} = 1.078\pm0.012\pm0.007}$. Multiplying by the world-average value of the $\Lambda^0_b$ lifetime yields $\tau_{\Xi^-_b}^{\rm Run~1,2} = 1.578\pm0.018\pm0.010\pm0.011$ ps, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the limited knowledge of the $\Lambda^0_b$ lifetime. This measurement improves the precision of the current world average of the $\Xi^-_b$ lifetime by about a factor of two, and is in good agreement with the most recent theoretical predictions., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. 118. Unveiling Assumptions: Exploring the Decisions of AI Chatbots and Human Testers

Abstract: The integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) and chatbots introduces new challenges and opportunities for decision-making in software testing. Decision-making relies on a variety of information, including code, requirements specifications, and other software artifacts that are often unclear or exist solely in the developer's mind. To fill in the gaps left by unclear information, we often rely on assumptions, intuition, or previous experiences to make decisions. This paper explores the potential of LLM-based chatbots like Bard, Copilot, and ChatGPT, to support software testers in test decisions such as prioritizing test cases effectively. We investigate whether LLM-based chatbots and human testers share similar "assumptions" or intuition in prohibitive testing scenarios where exhaustive execution of test cases is often impractical. Preliminary results from a survey of 127 testers indicate a preference for diverse test scenarios, with a significant majority (96%) favoring dissimilar test sets. Interestingly, two out of four chatbots mirrored this preference, aligning with human intuition, while the others opted for similar test scenarios, chosen by only 3.9% of testers. Abstract: Let $\Sigma$ denote a closed surface with constant mean curvature in $\mathbb{G}^3$, a 3-dimensional Lie group equipped with a bi-invariant metric. For such surfaces, there is a harmonic Gauss map which maps values to the unit sphere within the Lie algebra of $\mathbb{G}$. 120. Measurement and assignment of J = 5 to 9 rotational energy levels in the 9070-9370 cm$^{-1}$ range of methane using optical frequency comb double-resonance spectroscopy

Abstract: We use optical-optical double-resonance (OODR) spectroscopy with a continuous wave (CW) pump and a cavity-enhanced frequency comb probe to measure high rotational energy levels of methane in the upper part of the triacontad polyad (P6). A high-power CW optical parametric oscillator, tunable around 3000 cm$^{-1}$, is consecutively locked to the P(7, A$_2$), Q(7, A$_2$), R(7, A$_2$), and Q(6, F$_2$) transitions in the ${\nu}$$_3$ band, and a comb covering the 5800-6100 cm$^{-1}$ range probes sub-Doppler ladder-type transitions from the pumped levels with J' = 6 to 8, respectively. We report 118 probe transitions in the 3${\nu}$$_3$ $\leftarrow$ ${\nu}$$_3$ spectral range with uncertainties down to 300 kHz (1 x 10$^{-5}$ cm$^{-1}$), reaching 84 unique final states in the 9070-9370 cm$^{-1}$ range with rotational quantum numbers J between 5 and 9. We assign these states using combination differences and by comparison to theoretical predictions from a new ab initio-based effective Hamiltonian and dipole moment operator. This is the first line-by-line experimental verification of theoretical predictions for these hot-band transitions, and we find a better agreement of transition wavenumbers with the new calculations compared to the TheoReTS/HITEMP and ExoMol databases. We also compare the relative intensities and find an overall good agreement with all three sets of predictions. Finally, we report the wavenumbers of 27 transitions in the 2${\nu}$$_3$ spectral range, observed as V-type transitions from the ground state, and compare them to the new Hamiltonian, HITRAN2020, ExoMol and the WKMLC line lists.

121. Bridging Resource Theory and Quantum Key Distribution: Geometric Analysis and Statistical Testing

Abstract: Discerning between quantum and classical correlations is of great importance. Bell polytopes are well established as a fundamental tool. In this paper, we extend this line of inquiry by applying resource theory within the context of Network scenarios, to a Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocol. To achieve this, we consider the causal structure $P3$ that can describe the protocol, and we aim to develop useful statistical tests to assess it. More concretely, our objectives are twofold: firstly, to utilise the underlying causal structure of the QKD protocol to obtain a geometrical analysis of the resulting non-convex polytope, with a focus on the classical behaviours. Second, we devise a test within this framework to evaluate the distance between any two behaviours within the generated polytope. This approach offers a unique perspective, linking deviations from expected behaviour directly to the quality of the quantum resource or the residual nonclassicality in protocol execution.

122. Regularizing Numerical Extremals Along Singular Arcs: A Lie-Theoretic Approach

Abstract: Numerical ``direct'' approaches to time-optimal control often fail to find solutions that are singular in the sense of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, performing better when searching for saturated (bang-bang) solutions. In previous work by one of the authors, singular solutions were shown to exist for the time-optimal control problem for fully actuated mechanical systems under hard torque constraints. Explicit formulas, based on a Lie theoretic analysis of the problem, were given for singular segments of trajectories, but the global structure of solutions remains unknown. In this work, we review the aforementioned framework, and show how to effectively combine these formulas with the use of general-purpose optimal control software packages. By using the explicit formula given by the theory in the intervals where the numerical solution enters a singular arc, we not only obtain an algebraic expression for the control in that interval but we are also able to remove artifacts present in the numerical solution. In this way, the best features of numerical algorithms and theory complement each other and provide a better picture of the global optimal structure. We illustrate the technique on a two degree of freedom robotic arm example, using two distinct optimal control numerical software packages running on different programming languages.

Abstract: The Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV), a proposed consequence of certain quantum gravity (QG) scenarios, could instigate an energy-dependent group velocity for ultra-relativistic particles. This energy dependence, although suppressed by the massive QG energy scale $E_\mathrm{QG}$, expected to be on the level of the Planck energy $1.22 \times 10^{19}$ GeV, is potentially detectable in astrophysical observations. In this scenario, the cosmological distances traversed by photons act as an amplifier for this effect. By leveraging the observation of a remarkable flare from the blazar Mrk\,421, recorded at energies above 100 GeV by the MAGIC telescopes on the night of April 25 to 26, 2014, we look for time delays scaling linearly and quadratically with the photon energies. Using for the first time in LIV studies a binned-likelihood approach we set constraints on the QG energy scale. For the linear scenario, we set $95\%$ lower limits $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.7\times10^{17}$ GeV for the subluminal case and $E_\mathrm{QG}> 3.6 \times10^{17}$ GeV for the superluminal case. For the quadratic scenario, the $95\%$ lower limits for the subluminal and superluminal cases are $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.6 \times10^{10}$ GeV and $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.5\times10^{10}$ GeV, respectively.

124. Systematic analysis of jellyfish galaxy candidates in Fornax, Antlia, and Hydra from the S-PLUS survey: A self-supervised visual identification aid

Abstract: We study 51 jellyfish galaxy candidates in the Fornax, Antlia, and Hydra clusters. These candidates are identified using the JClass scheme based on the visual classification of wide-field, twelve-band optical images obtained from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey. A comprehensive astrophysical analysis of the jellyfish (JClass > 0), non-jellyfish (JClass = 0), and independently organized control samples is undertaken. We develop a semi-automated pipeline using self-supervised learning and similarity search to detect jellyfish galaxies. The proposed framework is designed to assist visual classifiers by providing more reliable JClasses for galaxies. We find that jellyfish candidates exhibit a lower Gini coefficient, higher entropy, and a lower 2D S\'ersic index as the jellyfish features in these galaxies become more pronounced. Jellyfish candidates show elevated star formation rates (including contributions from the main body and tails) by $\sim$1.75 dex, suggesting a significant increase in the SFR caused by the ram-pressure stripping phenomenon. Galaxies in the Antlia and Fornax clusters preferentially fall towards the cluster's centre, whereas only a mild preference is observed for Hydra galaxies. Our self-supervised pipeline, applied in visually challenging cases, offers two main advantages: it reduces human visual biases and scales effectively for large datasets. 125. The PESQetarian: On the Relevance of Goodhart's Law for Speech Enhancement

Abstract: To obtain improved speech enhancement models, researchers often focus on increasing performance according to specific instrumental metrics. However, when the same metric is used in a loss function to optimize models, it may be detrimental to aspects that the given metric does not see. The goal of this paper is to illustrate the risk of overfitting a speech enhancement model to the metric used for evaluation. For this, we introduce enhancement models that exploit the widely used PESQ measure. Our "PESQetarian" model achieves 3.82 PESQ on VB-DMD while scoring very poorly in a listening experiment. While the obtained PESQ value of 3.82 would imply "state-of-the-art" PESQ-performance on the VB-DMD benchmark, our examples show that when optimizing w.r.t. a metric, an isolated evaluation on the same metric may be misleading. Abstract: The branching fraction ratios of $\overline{B}^0\to D^+\tau^-\overline{\nu}_{\tau}$ and $\overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}\tau^-\overline{\nu}_{\tau}$ decays are measured with respect to their muonic counterparts, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. The reconstructed final states are formed by combining $D^+$ mesons with $\tau^-\to\mu^-\overline{\nu}_{\mu}\nu_{\tau}$ candidates, where the $D^+$ is reconstructed via the $D^+\to K^-\pi^+\pi^+$ decay. The results are \begin{align*} R(D^{+}) &= 0.249 \pm 0.043 \pm 0.047, R(D^{*+}) &= 0.402 \pm 0.081\pm 0.085, \end{align*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Abstract: This paper is focused on the segregation of FGK dwarf and giant stars through narrow-band photometric data using the Spanish Virtual Observatory (SVO) Filter Profile Service and associated photometric tools. We selected spectra from the MILES, STELIB, and ELODIE stellar libraries, and used SVO photometric tools to derive the synthetic photometry in 15 J-PAS narrow filters, which were especially selected to cover spectral features sensitive to gravity changes. Using machine-learning techniques as the Gaussian mixture model and the support vector machine, we defined several criteria based on J-PAS colours to discriminate between dwarf and giant stars. We selected five colour-colour diagrams that presented the most promising separation between both samples. Our results show an overall accuracy in the studied sample of $\sim$0.97 for FGK stars, although a dependence on the luminosity type and the stellar effective temperature was found. We also defined a colour-temperature relation for dwarf stars with effective temperatures between 4\,000 and 7\,000\,K, which allows one to estimate the stellar effective temperature from four J-PAS filters ($J0450$, $J0510$, $J0550$, and $J0620$). Abstract: Microfluidic devices are gaining attention for their small size and ability to handle tiny fluid volumes. Mixing fluids efficiently at this scale, known as micromixing, is crucial. This article builds upon previous research by introducing a novel optimization approach in microfluidics, combining Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with Machine Learning (ML) techniques. The research focuses on improving global optimization while reducing computational expenses. It draws inspiration from a Y-type micromixer, initially featuring cylindrical grooves on the main channel's surface and internal obstructions. Simulations, conducted using OpenFOAM software, evaluate the impact of circular obstructions on mixing percentage and pressure drop, considering variations in obstruction diameter and offset. A Gaussian Process (GP) was utilized to model the data, providing model uncertainty. Thus, this study optimizes geometries by using genetic algorithm (GA) and least-square optimization based on the reduced order model provided by GP. Results align with previous research, showing that medium-sized obstructions (137 mm diameter, 10 mm offset) near the channel wall are optimal. This approach not only provides efficient microfluidic optimization with uncertainty quantification but also highlights the effectiveness of combining CFD and ML techniques in achieving desired outcomes., Comment: 13 pages, 21 figures

Abstract: It is notorious that researches related to electrochemical sensors increased significantly due the promising characteristics that these devices present such as the possibility of obtaining information, with minimum manipulation of the studied system, in real time, and with low environmental impact. This article covers the carbon nanomaterials, presenting important aspects such as main properties, synthesis methods, and the application of these materials in the development of electrochemical sensors for the analysis of drugs and compounds of clinical interest. In this context, drug analysis is extremely important for quality control, to ensure that the medicine fulfills its role effectively without possible complications that could compromise the patient’s health and quality of life. In addition, analytical methods capable of determining compounds of clinical interest in biological fluids are extremely important for the indication of effective diagnoses. Thus, the versatility, selectivity, and portability of the electroanalytical techniques make the electrochemical sensors a favorite tool for the determination of drugs and compounds of clinical interest. It will be possible to follow in the present work that carbon nanomaterials have excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, strong adsorption capacity, high electrocatalytic effect, high biocompatibility, and high surface area. The possibility of formation of different composite materials based on carbonaceous nanomaterials that makes these materials promising for the development of analytical sensors, contributing to rapid, sensitive, and low-cost analyses can also be highlighted.

Abstract: The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. An additional cosmic-ray population with higher source density and softer spectra, presumably also extragalactic and dominating the cosmic-ray flux at EeV energies, is also required to reproduce the overall spectrum and composition results for all energies down to 0.6~EeV., Comment: Matches published version
