Abstract

Dark matter particles could be superheavy, provided their lifetime is much longer than the age of the universe. Using the sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory to ultra-high energy neutrinos and photons, we constrain a specific extension of the Standard Model of particle physics that meets the lifetime requirement for a superheavy particle by coupling it to a sector of ultra-light sterile neutrinos. Our results show that, for a typical dark coupling constant of 0.1, the mixing angle $\theta_m$ between active and sterile neutrinos must satisfy, roughly, $\theta_m \lesssim 1.5\times 10^{-6}(M_X/10^9~\mathrm{GeV})^{-2}$ for a mass $M_X$ of the dark-matter particle between $10^8$ and $10^{11}~$GeV., Comment: Version accepted for publication in PRD Letters, including Supplemental Material

Abstract

This note is about the observation that the various transition formulas between bases of trigonometric polynomials can be expressed in terms binomial coefficients. More specifically, we write the entries of the Chebyshev matrices $ T$ and $ U$ in terms of binomial coefficients. We remark that the inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ T$ correspond to classical power reduction formulas for trigonometric functions. Therefore the entries of $ T^{-1}$ are expressible in terms of binomial coefficients and powers of two. The inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ U$ appear in power reduction formulas involving the Catalan triangles. We could not spot them in the literature. As a corollary the Catalan triangles are interpreted as inverses of rather natural matrices of binomial coefficients. We explain the matrix inversions in terms of Riordan arrays. We solve the integral $ \int _{0}^{2\pi }\cos^{2m}( x)\sin^{2n}( x) dx$ and deduce a hypergeometric identity from the Fourier expansion of $\cos^{2m}(x)$ and $ \sin^{2n}( x)$. As a corollary we prove that super Catalan numbers are integers. We emphasize that from the point of view of these base changes between the trigonometric polynomials it is more natural to work with $2\cos(x)$ and $2\sin(x)$ instead of $\cos(x)$ and $\sin(x)$, since the transition matrices become invertible over the integers. We do a similar analysis for the spread polynomials. This enables us to make a conjecture of Goh and Wildberger more precise. In this exposition we give a mostly self-contained account of the matter, the prerequisites just being four semesters of calculus, linear algebra, elementary complex variables and the residue theorem.

Abstract

Results obtained by the RPC ECOgas@GIF++ Collaboration, using Resistive Plate Chambers operated with new, eco-friendly gas mixtures, based on Tetrafluoropropene and carbon dioxide, are shown and discussed in this paper. Tests aimed to assess the performance of this kind of detectors in high-irradiation conditions, analogous to the ones foreseen for the coming years at the Large Hadron Collider experiments, were performed, and demonstrate a performance basically similar to the one obtained with the gas mixtures currently in use, based on Tetrafluoroethane, which is being progressively phased out for its possible contribution to the greenhouse effect. Long term aging tests are also being carried out, with the goal to demonstrate the possibility of using these eco-friendly gas mixtures during the whole High Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider., Comment: Submitted to European Physical Journal C on October 24, 2023, 15 pages, 14 figures
