A case study was initiated from the perspective of three research questions: (1) CLIL teachers' practices at secondary schools of Aktobe during COVID-19 pandemic; (2) challenges for the teachers; (3) support provided for the teachers. The research methodology combined face-to-face personal interviews, and non-participant observation. Data analysis was conducted in line with Mayring's (2020) approach to content analysis and by means of categorization into specific themes that emerge from teachers' conceptualization of their CLIL practices. The analysis of teachers' reflections on their experiences and challenges of using the CLIL approach during the pandemic, support provided to them and teachers' attitudes towards the approach is presented in the paper. Research data on the secondary schools Science teachers' CLIL practices in a remote learning setting was categorized related preparation to teaching, resources used by the teachers, students' interaction during the lessons, and stakeholders' attitudes and perceptions of the approach. The obtained data enables to understand Science teachers' practices in terms of using the CLIL approach in Kazakhstani secondary schools in the period of COVID-19 pandemic, and will contribute to teacher development and preparation for successful CLIL realization in a nontraditional classroom.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how to improve higher education students' awareness of global issues with English teaching within the scope of the theme-based model of content-based language teaching (CBLT) approach and how to overcome problems that may be encountered during the implementation. Designed as an action research, the study was conducted in the spring term of the 2015-2016 academic year, with sophomores of a state university's vocational school. "Gender equality" theme was addressed within the scope of the study. The research data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, student journals, researcher journal and student products. The findings of the study revealed that while the concept of gender equality was generally limited to gender equality under the law prior to application, the scope of this concept was expanded to encompass not only law but also home, work, family and social life in many ways after the implementation. As a result of the research, it was concluded that theme-based activities contributed to awareness raising about the theme and increased the students' motivation towards the course, to learn the language, take steps on the solution of global problems and research on global issues.

To better understand the factors facilitating or impeding the translation of "promising controversies" (Taylor & Snoddon, 2013, p. 439) of plurilingualism theory into meaningful practices, this article presents a synthesis of 30 empirical studies on plurilingual pedagogy as enacted and experienced by educators and learners in various global K-12 and postsecondary contexts. Informed by plurilingualism (Coste et al., 1997/2009; Council of Europe, 2020), this synthesis forefronts the key contributions of plurilingual pedagogy as it fosters: (a) students' development of plurilingual (and pluri-/intercultural) competence, (b) evolution of language beliefs towards a positive orientation to plurality and hybridity, (c) affirmation of student and teacher identity and promotion of agency, and (d) language and literacy development. The perceived challenges, however, are related to the nature and practical issues of designing and implementing plurilingual pedagogy in the classroom which are interconnected with institutional policies and ideological discourses. The results illuminate the up-to-date progress as well as hurdles of promoting plurilingual pedagogies across different contexts and provide important implications for multiple stakeholders involved in pre-service teacher education, in-service professional development, curriculum improvement, and language policy making in Canada and other multicultural and multilingual societies and communities.

Foreign language anxiety in English learning has always been a major focus of English teaching research. How to relieve English majors' foreign language anxiety and improve their classroom participation becomes an imperative issue for English teachers. Based on the American teaching model of Sheltered Teaching and Observation Protocol (SIOP), this study explores whether the SIOP teaching model can help relieve English learning anxiety. The experiment on 60 freshmen majoring in business English shows that the SIOP model can relieve students' foreign language learning anxiety and improve their classroom participation. The SIOP teaching model is worth popularizing in business English teaching.

Using the framework of CLIL for the content and ESP for the language functions, this research investigated and analyzed the needs of current MA students, MA graduates and prospective employers as the basis for designing a textbook for an elective course entitled English for International Business. The results of a survey of 42 MA students, 48 MA graduates, and 35 prospective employers of MA graduates revealed what topics of international business and what English language functions in writing and speaking needed to be included. Moreover, in-depth interviews were conducted with two MA students, two MA graduates, and four prospective employers of MA graduates to gain a deeper understanding of the responses and the results from the survey data. All in all, the results from the survey and in-depth interviews can enable the writer of the textbook to proceed with the project in a clearer and more specific direction to serve the needs of the stakeholders of this English course offered by the university in the current study.

This study is aimed at investigating the perceptions of inservice English-medium instruction (EMI) teachers towards CLIL and CLIL teachers' target language and intercultural competences. The participants were 59 Thai/local and international native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) and non-native English-speaking teachers (NNESTs) at EMI schools in Thailand. The participants attended the one-day CLIL teacher training workshop used as the research context of the study. Questionnaire and audio recordings of the workshop were used as instruments in collecting both quantitative and qualitative data. Results indicated that Thai teachers generally perceived their CLIL knowledge and competences as the lowest in all areas. International NNESTs, by contrast, ranked themselves the highest in most areas, except for overall target language competence, where their perceived competence was slightly lower than international NESTs. These results can raise question of whether NESTs are more competent in EMI classrooms. Through thematic analysis, it was found that opportunities to learn and share about CLIL, to use English in intercultural settings, and to learn about intercultural awareness can contribute to EMI/CLIL teacher competences. Recommendations are provided regarding CLIL teachers' professional development for local and international teachers in the Thai EMI school contexts and alike.

In this study, Microteaching Lesson Study (hereafter MLS) was applied for a research lesson designed by the MLS group members including three third-year prospective English language teachers in line with the Content and Language Integrated Learning (hereafter CLIL) approach. This qualitative study aims to uncover the contribution of MLS to the improvement of the teaching within a single lesson geared toward young learners and the perspectives of MLS group members about major components of the MLS process. The participants of the study are three MLS group members, 15 peers and an instructor in the English Language Teaching (hereafter ELT) department of a state university in Turkey. The lesson collaboratively developed by the MLS group members was presented three times by a different member to a different group of five peers who pretended to be young learners. After each lesson, revision meetings were held to analyze the self-reflection of the presenter, the peer/instructor feedback about the lesson and the recorded lesson. The analysis of the revision meetings illustrated the instructional improvement cycle of MLS. Moreover, the analysis of the semi-structured interviews with the MLS group members revealed that they were generally satisfied with the major components of MLS, such as collaborative lesson planning and receiving feedback from peers although a few concerns were mentioned as well. It is suggested that MLS should be incorporated into ELT programs.

While the use of digital technologies is increasingly prominent in higher education, research suggests that adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) learners within the English Further Education (FE) sector have fewer opportunities to access them as part of their language learning. This paper explores whether the use of authentic digital materials in a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach helped promote positive learning outcomes for ESOL students at a FE college in the Northwest of England. Using a tablet-based app that teaches students authentic life-saving vocabulary and skills, a mixed methods research design involving a questionnaire, pre- and post-tests and focus groups was used with a group of 32 adult ESOL learners aged 18-61. The main findings from the study were that authentic digital materials were found to contribute to the ESOL learners' motivation and learning outcomes in their study of English. In conclusion several pedagogical implications are identified for ESOL teachers who aim to harness authentic digital materials, as well as for policymakers in terms of the need to provide more opportunities for adult ESOL learners to acquire digital literacy skills in the English FE sector.

As the vision in "A Framework for K-12 Science Education" and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) takes hold in schools and classrooms, there is an urgent need for teacher professional development (PD) programs that align with NGSS-designed curriculum materials and address the unique strengths and needs of diverse student groups, including multilingual learners (MLs). The purpose of this article is to propose our conceptual framework for PD programs that aligns with current reform efforts and is grounded in the mutually supportive nature of contemporary science and language instructional shifts. Specifically, we examine our previous NGSS-designed curriculum development project with MLs and review the literature in science education and language education with MLs. Our conceptual framework for PD programs is grounded in the perspective of "symmetry" that teacher professional learning experiences should be symmetrical to the learning experiences we organize for students. Grounded in this perspective, our conceptual framework consists of three design principles that describe how PD programs can guide teachers to (a) develop an asset-oriented view of MLs and instructional practices for recognizing and leveraging their assets, (b) integrate science and language in mutually supportive ways with MLs, and (c) develop more sophisticated instructional practices for integrating science and language with MLs over time. We describe contributions of our conceptual framework, which could generate a new research agenda and inform PD programs aimed at facilitating uptake of NGSS-designed curriculum materials in linguistically diverse science classrooms.

The use of scientific modeling has been shown to be highly effective in the learning of science content in multiple disciplines for non-English Learners (EL). However, the benefits of using this pedagogy with ELs have not been heavily explored. This article discusses the use of modeling-based evolution and population ecology pedagogical units in a sheltered biology high school class for ELs. A sheltered EL class is one where only ELs are enrolled and they learn both language and science concurrently. This article specifies the at the scaffolding used to adjust the pedagogy for this unique set of students. The effectiveness of this method was assessed using a convergent mixed method case study design. Data was collected using assessments in content, scientific reasoning and attitudes towards science (i.e., self-efficacy, fascination, and valuation of science) as well as teacher interviews, and classroom observations. The cases were an EL modeling-based sheltered biology class, and two non-EL inquiry-based biology classes, all at the upper secondary level. The EL modeling cohort achieved posttest comparison content scores that were not significantly different from the non-EL cohort and significantly higher posttest scientific reasoning scores. The effect sizes in both of these cases were much larger for the EL cohort. The affective assessments demonstrated intriguing results with the EL cohort having a greater fascination with science than the non-EL cohort but a decline in self-efficacy. Both cohorts valued science to the same extent. This methodology holds promise in helping to decrease the science gap between ELs and non-ELs taught with inquiry-based pedagogies.

Background Study: English education has been promoted in Taiwan for many years. Recently, content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has received attention as an effective way to integrate English into real-life contexts. With advances in technology, digital storytelling is suitable for students to develop multiple skills such as narrating real-life stories and recording them in English. Objectives: The present study developed a cooperative learning model in a CLIL context to enhance elementary school students' digital storytelling, English speaking proficiency performance, and financial knowledge. Methods: The participants were 43 sixth-grade students from two classes: the experimental group (n = 26) and the control group (n = 17). To investigate whether the digital storytelling results produced by the experimental group under the cooperative learning approach differed from the digital storytelling results produced individually by the control group, an experimental design was implemented throughout the 9-week course. All the participants took financial knowledge and English-speaking proficiency pre-tests and then received financial knowledge classes and digital storytelling instruction to help them effectively design digital storytelling videos, which incorporated the concepts of financial knowledge and English-speaking skills. Results and Conclusions: The results showed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in the overall digital storytelling performance, English speaking proficiency, and financial knowledge.

An ever-increasing need for a bilingual education in globalized societies have set new challenges for all stakeholders from ideological (monoglossic vs heteroglossic) as well as methodological perspectives. Teachers' persistent interest in different forms of bilingual education has attracted us to explore the potential of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) as a means of attaining a bilingual education in the second decade of the 21st century, especially the professional development of teachers who work in the given context. In this study, narrative analysis is employed to investigate how teachers' explicit meaningful experiences lead a teacher to become a CLIL teacher in the Estonian educational settings, and disclose the factors shaping this process. The results reveal a variation in the teachers' meaningful experiences driven mostly by their context -- the type of bilingual program, the status of the foreign language, school support for collaborative practices - as well as a variation in the belief of what constitutes CLIL - views on languages and personal pedagogical beliefs.

British Council for East Asia reported that the level of English competency of Indonesian pupils in primary and secondary education in English lessons and other scientific disciplines was very concerning. They did not use English as Medium Instruction (EMI) in Science class well. Besides, pupils need to have English communication skills in the 21st century. Because of that, the research aims to investigate how EMI should be applied in Science class. The purposive survey method was used in this study involving the process of data triangulation from tests, questionnaires, unstructured interviews, and observations of learning. The research subjects were selected by a purposive sampling technique involving 172 pupils aged 11-13 years from several secondary schools in four major cities in Indonesia which use English as the medium of instruction in Science class. The results showed that EMI can be applied in Science class by bilingual strategies. Most of the pupils understood the teachers' instruction, scientific terms, even scientific concepts but they felt safer using both Indonesian and monolingual languages to avoid some errors e.g. misconceptions when teachers explain fundamental science concepts. Introducing keywords in the form of bilingual terms related to the fundamental concepts of science helps pupils to understand science concepts more deeply and develop pupils' ability to speak English actively. These findings are expected to become a reference for how to use EMI in science class.

English has emerged as the language of scientific communication (Björkman, 2011; Jenkins, 2006). Given the significance of English, in addition to ESP courses that have been incorporated in university curriculum, the CLIL method can be one of the choices for improving students' English mastery. Before implementing CLIL and creating the necessary resources, a comprehensive investigation is required to determine the 'what' and 'how' the content, curriculum, assessment, and evaluation will be produced (Flowerdew, 2013). Prior to developing "Fundamental of Social Studies" CLIL-based content, this research intends to analyse several aspects. It investigates: (1) the significance students place on grammar, vocabulary, and language skills in the English learning process; (2) the students' preferences in English learning activities; and (3) the language components that students improved the most. Students in the Social Studies Program were given a survey. The implication based on the findings is that future material developments are recommended to include audio-materials, pay more attention to speaking activities, and incorporate more diverse grammar activities. Moreover, the type of activities involved are suggested to include group work as it is favoured by the students; especially for speaking performance. This paper aims to explore student experiences resulting from collaborative teaching and learning of academic literacy and content knowledge, for multiple objectives at a South African University of Technology. Using the qualitative research approach, undergraduate students who attended the Communication Skills course were randomly selected. Data were collected using in-depth interviews and questionnaires. The data were thematically coded to make sense of the experiences shared by the participants. The results indicated that academic literacy courses in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) were often regarded as peripheral, until we the lecturers in the present study collaborated to align disciplinary or content knowledge with academic literacy. Our alignment included the practice of decolonising the language and academic literacy curriculum, collaborative teaching, integrating content and language teaching and learning, and implementing a range of blended pedagogies, along with social media. Based on the student reflection and feedback, we are inclined to conclude that this pedagogy enhanced the overall teaching and learning experience. We further found that student learning experiences improved as the literacy course was moved from the periphery to the mainstream of the academic project by adopting various approaches in teaching and learning, guided by student needs, the language context of the class, and the learning outcomes or needs of the discipline.

This study addressed the intractable issue of ensuring that all students, including those who are linguistically and culturally diverse, have access to high quality science education. We explored the efforts of two organizations in the United States (one that supports science teachers and one that focuses on language development) to design resources that can inform science instruction for multilingual learners. We used Bronstein's (2003) framework for interdisciplinary collaboration to shed light on the institutional, program, and interpersonal factors that defined and helped sustain the collaboration between the two organizations. The findings showcase what it takes to integrate equity, science, and language development considerations in resources designed to inform content-area instruction for multilingual learners. The paper adds to the nascent literature on the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in supporting the science education of multilingual students and is unique in its exploration of both the process and the product of this collaboration.

Despite the prolific research on textbook evaluation in language teaching (Garinger, 2002; Miekley, 2005; Mukundan & Ahour, 2010; Nimehchisalem & Mukundan, 2015, among others), Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) textbook evaluation is still a field to be developed. The lack of specific tools prevents CLIL teachers and other stakeholders from easily identifying strengths and weaknesses of the textbooks that contribute to conveying content through a foreign language (usually English). This study provides educators with a checklist to analyse and evaluate CLIL textbooks. It is the second part of a three-stage process which replicates in CLIL contexts the study by Mukundan, Hajimohammadi, & Nimehchisalem (2011), who created a valid and reliable checklist for that purpose in the English language teaching field. The checklist for CLIL textbooks is the final version based on a previous tentative checklist (López-Medina, 2016), which is the starting point for this part of the study. The final version of the tool was created incorporating the input provided by a focus group of CLIL teachers. Further research is in progress to provide each item of the list with specific weight through factor analysis, and to test the checklist for its validity and reliability.

While research on Irish-medium immersion education (IME) has heralded benefits such as cognitive skills, academic achievement and language and literacy development, many studies have also identified challenges to its successful implementation. Immersion-specific research-validated tools can help school leaders navigate the school self-evaluation journey, critically review and evaluate the quality of aspects of their school's provision and plan for improvement. This paper reports on one theme, leadership, from a larger study, Quality indicators of best practice in Irish-medium immersion (Ó Ceallaigh and Ní Shéaghdha, 2017). Qualitative in nature, the study was guided by the following research question: What are IME educators' perceptions of best practices in IME?. The study explored 120 IME educators' perceptions of best practice in IME to inform the development of IME quality indicators. Individual interviews and focus group interviews were utilised to collect data. Data analysis revealed particular themes related to best IME leadership practices. Findings in turn informed the design of an evidence-informed school self-evaluation tool for IME settings. The various functions of the tool will be explored with a particular emphasis on building teaching and leadership capacity in IME through the school self-evaluation process.

The objective of this article is to explore the effectiveness of a method of teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesian higher institutions called project based Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) higher education institutions. The design proposed was based on the principle of language integrated learning (CLIL). Quantitative data were obtained from the scores of students' English proficiency before and after CLIL model application. While the qualitative data were obtained from the output of language produced by students during the learning process took place The results showed that CLIL English language course at higher education institutions in Lampung could work effectively. This is evident from the implementation of the whole program activities, from the implementation of the formation of groups, students work in groups to finish the project, group presentation activities, personal presentations and students' responses to all activities.

This article presents our narration of the emergence and development of a research area about the teaching and learning of the English language in Colombia and the creation of a research group named Critical Studies of Colombian Education Policies. The narration includes a description of the bilingual education policy in Colombia and a literature review of how the themes "Different Shades of the Colombian National Plan of Bilingualism" and "Theoretical and Practical Concerns over Bilingualism" have been addressed by authors of local journals, such as How, Profile, Íkala, and Colombian Applied Linguistics Journal, in the issues published from 2008 to 2020. The description and literature review link the life stories of our growth as teachers and researchers as related to the research area and research group mentioned above. A final part of the narration refers to our contributions to the ELT field in Colombia through the following two themes: "Dimensions of Language Policies: A Political Discourse Perspective" and "Making Teachers' Agency Relevant: Bottom-up Approaches to the Study of Language Education Policies."

Computer science is regarded one of the subjects best suited for teaching with ICT-supported CLIL, as the English language is the lingua franca of computing, and the computer science classroom is an ideal place to apply digital technologies. This paper aims to explore the role of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) in the teaching and learning of computer science in English -- focusing especially on using information and communication technology (ICT). For this purpose, a systematic literature review based on the PRISMA protocol was carried out. A total of 31 documents published in the period 2011-2021 on CLIL in computer science and ICT in the CLIL environment were analysed. In this article, first, the advantages of using CLIL in computer science will be discussed, followed by illustrating the benefits and challenges of applying ICT in CLIL lessons. Finally, trends in research on technology enhanced CLIL will be presented, outlining existing findings as well as identifying research gaps in the field. The most important shortcomings and difficulties outlined in the related literature are the limited research on both CLIL and ICT supported CLIL in the subject of computer science, the inconsistent terminology for using ICT in CLIL, and the need in CLIL teacher training courses for the effective use of digital technologies. Therefore, the findings of this paper identify a variety of future research agendas in order to increase the effective, ICT-supported CLIL in the subject of computer science.

This paper reports an exploratory sequential mixed-methods and action research study of the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) methodology at a state institution in Florencia (Colombia). The study aimed to explore the implementation of CLIL in a virtual learning environment and its implications for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning during the health emergency caused by COVID-19. The data collection instruments were a single interview, observations, reflective journals, classroom artefacts, and a questionnaire. The findings reveal that the CLIL methodology contributes to English learning. Thus, the results show the significant role of keywords and content vocabulary, contextualized lessons, assignments, and virtual games in fostering the students' listening skills, oral production, motivation, critical thinking, and development of cultural awareness. Hence, the outcomes demonstrate that the integration of virtual tools benefits the CLIL methodology in the virtual learning environment. Finally, the paper contains evidence supporting the implementation of CLIL, the contributions to EFL learning, and suggestions for further studies.

This study sets two main objectives to address this research gap in CLIL materials design: to identify and to evaluate teachers' approaches to text modification. The study focuses on four secondary teachers who teach non-language subjects to grades 7-9 in Finland, in English. The qualitative data consist of interviews and teaching materials designed by the participants. A review of over 60 studies is conducted in order to provide a framework for the evaluation of input modification strategies. The studies indicate that elaboration devices seem to enhance L2 comprehension and vocabulary development. The same cannot be as confidently stated about the effect of simplification. This study identifies all three main approaches to text modification in the participants' teaching materials. Regardless of their previous teaching experience, most teachers use elaboration strategies when adjusting the linguistic and cognitive level of texts. More experienced teachers seem to avoid using simplification strategies, whilst less experienced teachers adopt a wide range of strategies. All participants use some types of rediscursification strategy. This study can provide the professionals in the field of CLIL education with an insight into the reality of how CLIL practitioners modify materials. The results may also contribute to CLIL teacher education and in-service training by informing teachers of the commonly used input modification strategies and raising awareness of the effectiveness of these techniques.

This study collected the perception of medical students about the use of English for teaching through the use of a strategy based in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach at Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira (UTP) Colombia. A descriptive observational quantitative research was conducted in a group of 128 students of medicine who agreed to participate in the strategy called "Strategy for Paper's Bilingual Presentation (SPBP)" in the subjects of Surgical Clinic I and II. Of this group, 98.5% (126) considered learning English important in their training and 86% (110) essential to advance without difficulties in their studies. In addition, there was a 52.3% (67) of students who stated that the University should foster the use of English integrated with contents in specific programs. In reference to the teaching of English at the University, 85.9% (110) of the students considered that it should be integrated into the content of the academic programs. The didactic strategy was positively evaluated by 86.7% (111), and 61% (78) used English exclusively or preferentially. Scenic fear and lack of knowledge of technical language were arguments for the preferential use of Spanish in the session. Among the recommendations made by the students were the extension of the preparation time for the activity, the inclusion of clinical cases, and the selection of the assigned topics with the teacher. The didactic strategy used proved to be very useful and replicable in other semesters and training levels of the Medicine program. It is imperative to design and promote bilingual spaces that allow the use of English as a strategy to integrate contents and language in the teaching of Medicine.

CLIL teachers, particularly in tertiary "hard" CLIL settings, tend to underestimate the role of language for developing conceptual understanding of new content. Nevertheless, they consistently engage with English outside the classroom and even report a variety of activities that they carry out in English with the explicit hope that this will improve their language skills. However, they do not seem to develop transfer strategies that would allow them to benefit from this language engagement in their teaching. The results of a nation-wide study on CLIL teacher wellbeing in Austria confirmed this disconnect, prompting our present follow-up study, which aims to combine teacher training and research and to raise tertiary CLIL teachers' levels of Teacher Language Awareness (TLA). By means of an online questionnaire, class observations and stimulated recall interviews, we explored teachers' conceptualization of language, specifically their awareness of the language needed for effective content teaching. Results suggest that research-based TLA coaching must be part of CLIL teacher training to resolve the disconnect between the general communicative functions of language, on the one hand, and the pedagogical functions of language, on the other hand. This can help teachers unlock the potential of their existing language engagement for improving their classroom discourse and practices.

Studies on multi-stage writing tasks with adults and children have shown that model texts and task repetition aid language acquisition, especially when learners work in collaboration. However, these studies have not included measures of task motivation, which is vital in young learners (YLs) and could help develop a more comprehensive understanding of task effectiveness. The present study analyses task motivation in 24 EFL YLs writing in pairs during three sessions divided into a model group (MG) and a task repetition group (TRG). Results show that students' task motivation is high in general but declines in the MG while it is maintained in the TRG. As for the motives, working together is the main reason students give to justify their positive scores. These results complete previous knowledge about models and TR, reinforce the value of collaborative writing and encourage the inclusion of motivation measures in task-based research.

e-CLIP or Content and Language Integrated Pedagogy via Electronic Communication is an innovation in the Thai education system which supports the integration of electronic media and content-based English. e-CLIP is one of the tools developed to cope with the 21st century and has been integrated into several Thai schools in recent years. This research aims to compare students' perceptions of e-CLIP application in two distinct settings: a small and large-sized school. This study was conducted in Secondary Educational Service Area 39 Thailand. The data were collected through a survey, focus group interviews, and observations. The collected qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. Additionally, descriptive and inferential statistics were performed to interpret the quantitative data. The quantitative findings exposed that students from both schools showed positive perceptions of integrating electronic media and content-based English in their classes. However, qualitative data showed that small-sized students were more motivated to participate in activities utilizing the e-CLIP model than those in the large-sized school.

Due to increasing globalisation, workforce mobility and international assignments, higher education providers are attempting to equip their graduates with professional knowledge and proficient language skills to enhance their competitiveness in the global job market. In addition, intercultural competence is regarded as essential to enable graduates to communicate effectively between cultures. CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) education is expected to accommodate these targets in one approach. In our study, we designed a CLIL-based cultural training course and an accompanying self-produced textbook to develop our 43 university students' intercultural awareness before they started a one-year hospitality internship, either at home or overseas. CQ tests were conducted before and after an 18-week course intervention, and the results showed significant increments in the cognitive, meta-cognitive and behavioural dimensions of CQ, but not in motivational CQ. In the interview, the learners also commented on their high level of satisfaction with the course and its activities. The research calls for the implementation of various teaching techniques or educational policies borrowed from Internationalisation at Home (IaH) to enhance the success of cultural training in the classroom.

The Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach has become one of the most frequent teaching options used as a pivotal element of bilingual programs. Over the last two decades, a lot has been written about its characteristics, its potential, and the methodological approaches that should be used to encourage such programs. Since the main objective of CLIL is to improve the use of the foreign language as a vehicle for communication by students when accessing and manipulating content matter, it seems evident that methodological strategies should be promoted to provide the opportunity to maximize the use of the language within the classroom. In this respect, project-based learning (PBL) is depicted, in principle, as an ideal proposal for CLIL, since its implementation will entail an increase in language management. Especially concerning the content, this will result in an improvement in students' ability to perform more comfortably in school and, presumably, more effectively. Nevertheless, there might not be such a straightforward cause-effect relationship and, therefore, it is necessary to dig deeper into the real impact of using PBL. This study is aimed at analyzing its influence from the students' point of view, to drill down on their feelings and behavior towards PBL and how they tackle and solve the arising challenges. Results have shown interesting information about their views on the benefits of working by projects but also some concerns regarding the use of this teaching and learning model.

This article examines the relationship between European language policy and funded language learning projects in the field of LSP. We look at why and how the objectives were expressed, how the overall directions have evolved over the past decade, and how the LSP landscape has been redefined through research and implementation. Our discursive and ethnographic analysis is based on the framework texts published by Europe in the "Lifelong Learning Programme" and then in the "Erasmus+ Programme." These institutional texts are put into perspective with the documents produced in the framework of three European projects in which we have participated: LILAMA (employability), INCLUDE (social inclusion), TRAILs (teacher training). Our analysis seeks to identify and explain the reasons that led to the shift from working on the needs of companies and employees to focusing on the needs necessary for implementation, which implies that interest is now focused on the training needs of the teachers involved in this context (Basturkmen, 2019) and on the challenges that remain to be met.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the readiness of future primary school teachers for trilingual teaching with CLIL technology. Qualitative research method was used in the study. A semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers was used to collect the data. 160 teacher candidates studying at various universities in Kazakhstan in the 2020-2021 academic year participated in the research. As a result of the research, it was determined that the primary school teacher candidates' readiness for trilingual instruction with CLIL technology was insufficient. Research findings revealed the necessity of reorganizing the learning curricula in higher education programs in order for primary school teacher candidates to gain competence in the field of trilingual education with CLIL technology.

(1) Background: based on the constantly increasing requirements for modern university graduates, we have developed an educational model that allows us to introduce content and language integrated learning into classes with a multilingual approach, which will allow students to use several foreign languages in the process of professional communication. The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the efficiency of a newly introduced integrated learning model from the perspective of students, to identify the impact of such a model on students' professional discipline learning outcomes and to determine if the learning model contributes to an improvement in foreign language proficiency. (2) Methods: for our research we used qualitative and quantitative data from students' records of professional discipline and Spanish testing, as well as surveys and interviews on proposed learning model efficiency. Two groups of students took part in the experiment (N = 23 and N = 24). (3) Results: results on students' Spanish proficiency showed that the proposed learning model had a positive influence. Students from the experimental group got higher results on Listening, Reading and Speaking. According to results on professional discipline, both groups achieved approximately equal scores. Moreover, students described such a proposed learning model as efficient and progressive, giving a lot of advantages. (4) Conclusions: the experiment conducted confirmed the efficiency of the proposed learning model. In conclusion, it can be recommended for the realization of a multilingual approach, as well as the learning of a professional discipline.

ELLs need to engage with topics and situations in the classroom that equip them with the social, professional and civic cultural skills to address real-life interactions for their present realities, as well as their future realities (American, 2009, Garett, 2005; Perez & Morrison, 2016). Teachers face the challenge of balancing conventional textbooks and curriculum, which are fixed and often limited to customary topics, not fully addressing the dynamic and changing realities of ELLs. This article describes how a post-methods teaching approach (Kumaravadivelu, 1994; Masouleh, 2012), which represents a self-designed flexible and pragmatic alternative to strict adherence to a singular method, can be tailored to ELLs' needs and commonly-encountered relevant contexts to connect learning to real-life experiences. The discussion highlights the value of a multi-method approach, falling under the umbrella of Situated Learning, to provide real-life scenarios within which students can complete tasks, engage in projects, and/or study and learn from relevant content-based material. In doing so, ELLs' language proficiency, as well as their world-readiness, are effectively developed.

The novel exigencies of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic caused a shift towards online learning environments and teleconference platforms, which have also affected teaching practicums. The impact of this approach on teacher preparation is yet unknown and may render pre-service teachers (PSTs) more vulnerable to the challenges of early professional learning through practice, especially when implementing a methodology they have been insufficiently introduced to. Following three students of primary teacher education who opted for a practicum in a CLIL class at a Finnish teacher training school, this case study examines how the online practicum affected these PSTs' emotions and understanding of CLIL. The case study is based on the analytical categories of teacher identity and emotion and draws on essay, diary, and interview data. The thematic analysis of the data suggests that the online practicum met participants' expectations for building confidence and was perceived as an overall instructive experience, which was improved by the quality of mentorship and peer support they received. However, feelings of frustration or dissatisfaction accompanied moments of conflict with incoming expectations, principally related to using English in CLIL. The analysis further suggests that the online practicum strengthened participants' earlier conception of CLIL as a language-oriented teaching tool. Regardless of whether online CLIL practicums remain a future option, acquiring disciplinary and language knowledge alike are important aspects in teacher preparation for CLIL, which could be an optional part of teacher education programs for PSTs who are aware of or sensitive to language as a tool for learning.

Pedagogical practices that are effective in content courses are often effective in CLIL courses too, yet one such practice -- content compression -- is generally neglected. Content compression is the purposeful reduction of the content to be taught; however, the CLIL literature often warns against the reduction and simplification of content for fear that it might harm students' understanding of the subject content. This paper explains the ostensibly paradoxical result that content compression improves students' understanding of content and shows why it is well suited to CLIL, if applied correctly. It presents content compression principles and techniques that are appropriate to content production and teaching practice in the CLIL classroom and shows how it was used to enhance language acquisition by students in a CLIL business course at a Colombian university over a period of three semesters. This experience suggested that content compression, in combination with other pedagogical practices, not only increased students' linguistic confidence, but also enhanced their perceived learning in both content and language.

Previous literature has focused on investigating the use of sources in the classroom and how much they contribute to building a coherent mental representation of the texts. These studies explain how integration from multiple document sources occurs; however, their results are limited to the first language and do not inform about the types of these sources or how they are used. In this sense, the objective of this case study is to identify the types of sources used in four courses of a student exchange program in a Chilean University. The data was collected through focus groups with sixty students and in-depth interviews with four professors to determine in what sense the type of document selected could contribute to the learning process. A content analysis was carried out using Nvivo 12 to report on the pedagogical implications of using these sources in a Spanish L2 teaching setting.

This paper presents the results of a research into the foreign teachers' attitudes towards the first foreign language (FL 1) teaching according to the CLIL approach. The first foreign language teachers (FL 1 teachers) should have carried out their FL 1 lessons using the CLIL approach. The results of the twelve interviews: teachers agree upon the importance of the education process of teachers-to-be, for any teacher working at an early level should have completed a BA in class teaching and should have acquired a degree in the methodology of early language teaching. Most teachers who used the CLIL approach in the first year of its introduction (school year 2014-2015), refrained from it in the second year, or only used some elements of the CLIL approach, for they felt that it was impossible to follow the guidelines of the "hard" CLIL. Consequently, they only used some elements or strategies of the CLIL approach, which some authors call "soft" CLIL. Although some teachers claimed to have encountered numerous obstacles in teaching according to CLIL, they nevertheless considered it to be a suitable approach in the FL 1 classroom and they feel that CLIL has contributed significantly to the learning outcomes.

The fact that our world increasingly faces serious problems including poverty, wars, environmental destruction, climate change, pandemics, gender inequality, hunger, oppression and so on raises the question of the role of foreign language teaching profession in struggling to find solutions to those global issues. This understanding relates to an educational stance called global education which aims to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and ability to effectively communicate in a foreign language and enable them to be socially conscious of global problems and provide them with the linguistic tools to take action. In this regard, this study aimed to uncover a group of tertiary level EFL learners' perspectives on a course integrating global issues and language education. To this end, a study with a qualitative design was conducted, and focus group interviews were held with a group of students at a state university in Turkey. The data analysis revealed that the learners' conceptions of global issues included ones such as poverty, environment, education, and oppression. Furthermore, they had mainly positive opinions about the effects of dealing with global issues in class, primarily referring to expanding their perspectives and improving learning gains. Finally, they made suggestions for textbook content and classroom activities. The results of this study might contribute to the attempts to make global education one of the vital approaches of foreign language education with the hope that the world could turn into a better place.

This research paper endeavors to evaluate, assess and assert the expediency and efficacy of employing content and language integrated learning (CLIL) in teaching Reading skills to EFL students. It is a qualitative paper which examines and underscores the usefulness of developing EFL reading comprehension skills by using the CLIL teaching. The outcome of this teaching and learning methodology is predicted and determined by presenting and evaluating considerable researches carried out in this field by eminent language researchers. These studies unequivocally demonstrate that the application of CLIL in classrooms with regard to the acquisition and retention of EFL reading and vocabulary skills among college students has proved to be very helpful and palpable. It must be understood that CLIL does not help in making the teaching content simple or revising what learners already know. CLIL courses actually blend language and content together so as to enhance the language as well as the thinking abilities of the learners. The significant amount of research interest in this subject and its growing demand as a foreign language teaching approach necessitate intensive research and analysis as to its efficacy in other parts of the world. In this context, this paper examines and validates its efficacy for the Saudi EFL learners, in view of its ostensible advantages related to language awareness and content knowledge. This paper aims to address the problems and concerns of Saudi learners and teachers of EFL, and lays down the plans to implement CLIL courses in Saudi universities for the benefit of the students in this part of the world. The research concludes by encapsulating and analyzing the researches undertaken in this field and explaining the lessons learnt by employing CLIL courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels in Saudi universities.

The worldwide proliferation of English-medium instruction (EMI) in the higher education sector has compelled researchers to investigate the implementation challenges faced by teachers and students in such contexts. However, very few studies have focused on changes in pedagogical approaches to enhance EMI teaching and learning. This explanatory mixed-methods study aimed to examine the value of two pedagogical practices, i.e., formative feedback (FF) and experiential learning (EL), used in an entrepreneurship course in a science-and-technology EMI university in South Korea. The findings of a survey of the 352 business and engineering students enrolled in the course revealed that learners who engaged in extensive FF and EL activities (treatment group) had significantly better self-perceived subject comprehension, motivation, and overall satisfaction with the course than their counterparts who were taught in a lecture-type environment (control group). The analysis of the focus group interview data confirmed that learners perceived these pedagogical practices as effective in promoting the simultaneous acquisition of knowledge of the subject and English language skills, which is the most desirable outcome in an EMI class. This study paves the way for more rigorous research on EMI pedagogy.

Many educational researchers and teachers have agreed that language can be fostered in the context of science teaching. However, the effect of language fostering has depended heavily on teacher's perception. Recognizing the role of teaching (including Physics teaching) in language training will help teachers become conscious while designing teaching activities, contributing to promoting cognitive activities of students. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to identify teachers' perceptions to foster language in the context of physics teaching in Northern Vietnam, where many ethnic minority students study for whom Vietnamese is like the second language. A survey was used to collect the data from 64 physics teachers who taught in high schools. The differences in teaching experience and education background of physics teachers toward languages fostering were examined by the independent sample t-test and the one-way ANOVA. The obtained results show that (i) most teachers held a positive view about the importance of language of physics in teaching (ii) There were no statistically significant differences in the importance of language in teaching physics based on the education background of teachers; (iii) The novice teachers held a more positive perception than the experienced ones about the importance and signs of language in the student's physics learning process. These results would prove to be a valuable source of information for designing physics teaching activities for language fostering in mountainous areas of Vietnam.

In this article we will present a study undertaken in the scope of a Content and Language Integrated Learning project, which was implemented at a local private primary school in the Oporto area, Portugal. This project takes into account the promotion of a teaching and learning process based on the fostering of 21st Century skills, the so-called "creactical skills", i.e., critical thinking and creativity into action (Ohler, 2013) and a global and sustainable awareness. By developing an action research project and following a mixed-method research methodology, we analysed the project's implementation, online questionnaires results, and other data including lesson plans, supervision reports/notes, pictures, videos and projects in order to find evidence of practices which foster the "creactical skills". The results show that pupils' critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and cultural awareness skills may have been fostered, but there is still some work to be done regarding other skills mainly due to teachers' approaches which have to change.

The language of teaching and learning challenges Physical Sciences teachers and impacts learners' achievements. The study aimed to investigate how language literacy is integrated into the teaching of Physical Sciences. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The participants were five Grade 10 Physical Sciences teachers and 211 learners (108 boys; 103 girls) from nine schools exhibiting low academic achievements. Data were gleaned through the Literacy Skills Usage Survey Questionnaire (LSUSQ). The results show that 77.78% of the teachers did not engage learners in report writing and arguments which are fundamental to language literacy, suggesting that integrating literacy in science teaching was inadequate. Learners had difficulties in contributing to word walls, writing reports, and arguing from evidence. The lack of integration suggests that teachers lacked training in integrating language literacy into science teaching. These findings underscore the need for workshops to enable teachers to incorporate language literacy in teaching Physical Sciences.

We have developed a program called Content Integrated Language Instruction for Adults, incorporating research-based practices in vocabulary and language instruction to facilitate a deep and broad understanding of complex content. A subset of words critical to comprehension of the subject matter is covered in each lesson, using group discussion and extensive writing as well as utilizing contextual clues and doing morphological analysis. We have implemented this curriculum with two cohorts of English Language learners studying U.S. history and civics. There was significant growth in both vocabulary (for intentionally studied words, incidentally encountered words, morphologically complex words) and comprehension of the content.

Pedagogical translanguaging has been extensively researched over the past decade. Yet, little is known about the attitudes of students towards this practice. Students constitute an integral part of classroom interactions and their learning process is significantly affected by teachers' classroom discourse. This action research (AR) study, situated in a Chinese university Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) reading classroom and aided by lesson recordings and two sets of questionnaires, explores the translanguaging strategies employed by the teacher as well as the students' attitudes to such strategies. Through incorporating feedback collected from students regarding the teacher's modifications of language use, the study has demonstrated how the teacher mobilizes her full linguistic resources, in the form of translanguaging, to achieve pedagogical outcomes, which eventually leads to the establishment of a mutually beneficial classroom ecology. The study also indicates that advanced EFL learners, highly motivated to improve language proficiency and acquire subject content unanimously reject the traditional monolingual approach to teaching. The findings call for further research into the impact of pedagogical translanguaging on students' learning process in multilingual classrooms.

CLIL approach refers to Content and Language Integrated Learning. This paper discusses the self-efficacy of Malaysian Gifted Students (MGS) at GENIUS@Pintar Negara in understanding Arabic tasks in the classroom, for example, understanding the Arabic terms in the lesson of Haji. These terms are; a) dam tertib and takdir, b) dam tertib and ta'dil, c) dam takhyir and takdir, d) dam takhyir and ta'dil. Besides, by employing the CLIL, the MGS can improve themselves because the CLIL approach encourages their self-efficacy to completely deal with the language task. The present study employs; qualitative study by using an interview, verbal report, and observation. This method is an instrument to answer two research questions. a) How the individual of MGS adapts his/ her situation to understand the four Arabic terms of the dam in Haji after undergo the three principles stages of classroom task in CLIL? b) What is the best method to memorize the four Arabic terms of the dam in Haji? In this study, three participants took part in the pilot study, and seven participants took part in the actual study. The present study revealed that the MGS in the Pusat GENIUS@Pintar Negara prefer to be independent learners by using the internet to understand the four Arabic terms and memorize by using keywords related to the four Arabic terms in performing Haji.

Our article argues for content and language integrated learning (CLIL) in the social sciences, as part of a new literacy towards 21st century challenges at school. At first, we will show how multilingualism is closely juxtaposed with global discourses in a worldwide network of glocalities. Thereafter, for the conceptual framework of the suggested pedagogy, we explain why cosmopolitanism must constitute an integral part thereof, accompanying the genesis of classroom glocalities. The heart of our competence model for CLIL in the social sciences fosters the promotion of global discourse competence with adolescent students. In short, this learning aim is a hybrid of subject and language learning, incorporating the merits of language didactics as well as "21st century skills". Finally, in the last step, we will present #climonomics, a simulation of a multilingual EU parliamentary debate about climate change and climate action for secondary students. This example intends to demonstrate how multilingualism through CLIL amplifies the magnitude of global discourses during a simulation yet realistic setting. It should provide 'food for thought' for similar initiatives in research and teaching, to encourage the facilitation of cosmopolitan visions in classroom glocalities.

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has become the focus of Foreign Language (FL) research within the last decades. CLIL provides a more complete, naturalistic, and meaningful context to FL learning, which has proven to bring many benefits to learners, such as a higher motivation and promotion of creativity, and better results in receptive skills, vocabulary, morphology and fluency. Nevertheless, most CLIL research has focused on primary and secondary level students and, thus, more research is needed with younger learners, namely, pre-primary students. The present study examines the learning of FL vocabulary in pre-primary learners following a soft-CLIL program, as compared to their same age peers following Formal Instruction (FI) of English. Over the course of six months, pre-primary students of two grades, namely 4- and 5-year-old students (N=155), took part in such program, aiming at teaching two curricular preschool units, traditionally taught in the mother tongue (L1), in English in the FL sessions. A longitudinal study was conducted, and students were administered a general vocabulary level pre-test, as well as a target words receptive vocabulary post-test after the two units had been worked on. The focus of the research was on receptive vocabulary acquisition, but age and word frequency effects were also analyzed. Results showed positive tendencies in receptive vocabulary development through soft-CLIL, although not statistically significant. A significant frequency effect was found, indicating that high-frequency words are recalled more easily than lower-frequency ones, but no significant differences were found when comparing learners from the two grades.
