This study aims to assess the antibacterial activity of boric acid ester derived from boron mines, which is utilised as an active component in the paint industry. Multiple product variations were obtained by adding boric acid ester to the base, referred to as the reference sample, known as silk matte paint, and used as an interior paint with active substance concentrations ranging from 0.005% to 0.6%. Escherichia coli (ATCC10536) bacteria were inoculated at 78000 cfu cm−2 into samples with 0.005- 0.075% active substance, and at 24000 cfu cm−2 into samples containing 0.15- 0.6% of the active substance, and the reduction rates were determined by a mathematical equation via multivariate linear regression analysis, relating Escherichia coli reduction percentages, surface energy values, and pH measurements, including the power percentages and gloss values for the reference sample. Fennel essential oil was encapsulated in β-cyclodextrin to prepare microcapsules (β-CD-FEO). Single-factor experiments and model fitting were used to optimise the microcapsules. When the optimal core/wall material ratio was 10:0.6, encapsulation time set as 90 min, and encapsulation temperature controlled at 60°C, an optimal encapsulation efficiency of 77.05 ± 0.14% can be obtained. Using β-CD-FEO blended with low acyl gellan gum (LA-GG) as main constituents, three-component coating solutions containing sodium alginate (SA), sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), and konjac glucomannan (KGM) were investigated to evaluate their effect on the preservation of blueberries. Compared with the noncoated sample, coated blueberries showed excellent storage properties, especially KGM/LA-GG/β-CDs-FEO group had the highest sensory evaluation score under 25°C for 8 days. This paper solves the dynamic contact problem when a rigid flat punch indents into an exponentially graded (FG) viscoelastic coated homogeneous half-plane. A harmonic vertical force is applied to the FG coating, and the solution is obtained for the stress and displacement for both the FG viscoelastic coating and the half-plane using the Helmholtz functions and the Fourier integral transform technique. By applying specific boundary conditions, the contact mechanics problem is converted into a singular integral equation of the first kind. This equation is then solved numerically using the Gauss-Chebyshev integration formulas. The analysis provides detailed insights into how various parameters—such as external excitation frequency, loss factor ratio, Young's modulus ratio, density ratio, Poisson's ratio, indentation load, and punch length—affect the dynamic contact stress and dynamic in-plane stress. This work is a study aimed at optimizing the process of superarc metallization, with a focus on the effect of voltage on the properties of the spraying coatings. In this work, 30HGSA grade steel wire was used for the coating of 45 steel, widely used in mechanical engineering. The use of supersonic arc metallizer SX-600 allowed to obtain coatings at different voltages (32 V, 38 V and 44 V) and the same current strength. Various metallization process parameters such as material feed rate, voltage, current, distance and nozzle geometry are discussed in this paper. Using various analytical techniques including X-ray diffraction analysis, microscopy, microhardness and corrosion resistance tests, the qualities of the coatings were evaluated. Particular attention was paid to analyzing the phase composition of the coatings, porosity, substrate bond strength and tribological characteristics. It was found that the voltage during the supersonic arc metallization process has a significant effect on these characteristics. The selected optimum voltage allows to obtain dense and homogeneous coatings with improved performance properties. The results of the study revealed that the best physical and mechanical properties were exhibited by the sample processed at 38 V, which showed lower porosity and improved strength characteristics compared to the other samples. These findings can be used to improve manufacturing processes in industries such as automotive and mechanical engineering, where restoration and improved performance of worn parts is required. In current biomedical and environmental detection, multi-modal optical imaging technology is playing an increasingly important role. By utilizing information from dimensions such as spectra and polarization, it reflects the detailed characteristics and material properties of the targets. However, as detection system performance becomes more complex, issues such as aberrations introduced by multilayered lenses, signal attenuation, decreased polarization sensitivity, and latency can no longer be ignored. These factors directly affect the assessment of image details, influencing subsequent analyses. In this paper, we propose a method for designing and optimizing spectrum-splitting filters that considers the wavefront aberration and transmittance of the multi-modal optical imaging system. The method of optimizing coating phases to minimize scalar phase aberrations while maximizing system transmission leads to substantially improved imaging performance. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the method can improve the imaging performance. The electrodeposition of copper (Cu), silver (Ag), and their alloys has been a subject of interest since the 19th century. Primarily due to their exceptional features such as good mechanical hardness and electrical conductivity, high resistance to corrosion, and electromigration, Cu–Ag electrodeposits continue to be investigated and developed to improve their properties for different applications. This paper reviews the state of the art in the field of electroplated Cu–Ag alloys in an aqueous solution, with particular emphasis on the observed properties and variety of electrochemical processes used to produce high-quality materials. Moreover, this review paper focuses on the experimental conditions employed for Cu–Ag electrodeposition, intending to understand the basis and manipulate the processes to obtain coatings with superior characteristics and for attractive usage. Currently available focal knee resurfacing implants (FKRIs) are fully or partially composed of metals, which show a large disparity in elastic modulus relative to bone and cartilage tissue. Although titanium is known for its excellent osseointegration, the application in FKRIs can lead to potential stress‐shielding and metal implants can cause degeneration of the opposing articulating cartilage due to the high resulting contact stresses. Furthermore, metal implants do not allow for follow‐up using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).To overcome the drawbacks of using metal based FKRIs, a biomimetic and MRI compatible bi‐layered non‐resorbable thermoplastic polycarbonate‐urethane (PCU)‐based FKRI was developed. The objective of this preclinical study was to evaluate the mechanical properties, biocompatibility and osteoconduction of a novel Bionate® 75D ‐ zirconium oxide (B75D‐ZrO2) composite material in vitro and the osseointegration of a B75D‐ZrO2 composite stem PCU implant in a caprine animal model. The tensile strength and elastic modulus of the B75D‐ZrO2 composite were characterized through in vitro mechanical tests under ambient and physiological conditions. In vitro biocompatibility and osteoconductivity were evaluated by exposing human mesenchymal stem cells to the B75D‐ZrO2 composite and culturing the cells under osteogenic conditions. Cell activity and mineralization were assessed and compared to Bionate® 75D (B75D) and titanium disks. The in vivo osseointegration of implants containing a B75D‐ZrO2 stem was compared to implants with a B75D stem and titanium stem in a caprine large animal model. After a follow‐up of 6 months, bone histomorphometry was performed to assess the bone‐to‐implant contact area (BIC). Mechanical testing showed that the B75D‐ZrO2 composite material possesses an elastic modulus in the range of the elastic modulus reported for trabecular bone. The B75D‐ZrO2 composite material facilitated cell mediated mineralization to a comparable extent as titanium. A significantly higher bone‐to‐implant contact (BIC) score was observed in the B75D‐ZrO2 implants compared to the B75D implants. The BIC of B75D‐ZrO2 implants was not significantly different compared to titanium implants. A biocompatible B75D‐ZrO2 composite approximating the elastic modulus of trabecular bone was developed by compounding B75D with zirconium oxide. In vivo evaluation showed an significant increase of osseointegration for B75D‐ZrO2 composite stem implants compared to B75D polymer stem PCU implants. Background and Objectives: Our country has been importing various kinds of wallpaper from different countries for many years. With the increase of foreign exchange problems, the local production of wallpaper and its self-sufficiency has been proposed as a suitable solution. On the other hand, currently, domestic companies are producing paper from white waste paper, which is not justified for use as printing and writing grades due to many problems. However, many companies in the country are producing white grades from white waste paper, the use of which as a base paper in the production of decorative paper or wall paper has not been scientifically investigated. The purpose of this research is to study and investigate the possibility of producing wall paper from recycled white paper produced in the country. Methodology: The stages of this project were carried out in 6 separate and consecutive phases, which include: 1) determining the quality characteristics of the papers; 2) preparation of coating material formulation with starch as binder; 3) preparation of coating material formulation with latex and starch as binder; 4) coating of papers with the prepared coating formulations ; 5) Coating papers and non-woven fabric (Non-Woven) with polyvinyl chloride (PVC); 6) Application of four-color printing on the selected samples of coated papers. For this purpose, first, samples of papers produced by several Iranian companies were acquired and they were transferred to the laboratory of Biosystems and Bioproducts of Shahid Beheshti University for coating and performing the necessary treatments. In order to perform the mentioned treatment on the paper samples, various chemical substances were used, including calcium carbonate powder, kaolin, titanium oxide, corn starch, latex and PVC powder. With this aim, coating solutions with different percentage of solids were prepared steadily and with trial and error using various combinations of these materials (with a total of 110 and 124 parts). Then, these coated solutions were added on various domestic base papers (mostly recycled). Finally, the image of a flower was printed in four colors on the most desirable coated papers. Results: In determining the quality characteristics of base papers, including measurements of water absorption, ash content, thickness, permeability to air, tensile strength, tear resistance index and burst resistance index, two paper samples produced by two companies of Pardis Paper and Tabriz paper were selected as the best and considering the amount of ash, Tabriz paper was introduced as the base paper more suitable than other local papers. Further, after applying the coating material, coated papers with a relatively favorable appearance and whiteness percentages of about 60 to 85 were obtained, and finally, based on the results, a significant relationship was found between the increase in the solids percentage of the coated solutions and the whiteness percentage of the coated paper. Also, after the printing operation on the selected samples, Rasha Superkraft and Tabriz Kraft papers were introduced as the best samples. Also, the highest quality of printing was reached with PVC on Pars white paper with 16% PVC, on whitetop Rasha with 28% PVC and on non-woven fabric (non-woven fabric) with 28% PVC compared to the weight of the paper. Conclusion: The conclusion of the results of this research are listed below: A) The best solid percentage of coating solution (concentration of the mixture) was 41-46%. b) The best combination of binder and pigment, equal to 100 + 12 + 12 = 124 parts and the ratio of the dry weight of the coating mixture added to the dry weight of the base paper is equal to 12%. c) The highest whiteness obtained by adding calcium carbonate + titanium oxide + starch. t) The most suitable concentration of starch that can be used in the coating solution is 15%. c) The best coating and uniform and good coating appearance was obtained on Rasha Superkraft paper with the formula: kaolin + titanium oxide + latex with a whiteness of 77.7% and on Tabriz kraft paper with the formula: kaolin + titanium oxide + latex, with a whiteness of 71.8%. This study investigates the optimization of process parameters for coating silk sutures with Acanthus ilicifolius leaf extract. The increasing awareness of surgical site infections is a critical concern associated with the use of sutures in medical procedure undertaking. Our study aimed to assess the impact of three crucial coating factors, namely extract content, temperature, and duration, on the mechanical and antibacterial characteristics of silk sutures braided together. Through Box–Behnken design, in conjunction with the response surface approach, we conducted a thorough analysis to refine the model. The result showed that extract concentration directly influences both antimicrobial activity and elongation, while temperature and time primarily affect tensile strength and bending stiffness. To achieve the maximum tensile strength, minimum breaking elongation, minimum bending stiffness, and lower friction, all while maintaining the important antimicrobial efficacy of the sutures, this study emphasizes the use of response surface methodology in optimizing coating parameters for A. ilicifolius leaf extract on silk sutures. Lignosulphonate-based azo pigments are synthesized by functionalizing industrial waste lignosulphonate material through a diazo coupling reaction. It has dispersion and metal surface protection function by coating. Aniline, 4,4′-bis(4-aminophenoxy) biphenyl (BAP-Biphenyl), and o-dianisidine were used to synthesize three lignosulphonate-based azo pigments. 1H-NMR, FT-IR, HRMS, and UV spectroscopic methods confirm the pigment formation through the diazo coupling reaction of lignosulphonate and products. By using TGA and DSC analysis, the thermal behaviour of azo pigments was examined. Successive increase in mass also suggests successful diazo coupling reaction. The light scattering technique gives particle size of azo pigments for aniline-azo-LS, BAP-Biphenyl-azo-LS and o-dianisidine-azo-LS were found to be 1578, 2387, and 1917 nm, respectively. Additionally, the negative zeta potential was noticed indicating the pigments' dispersion ability. This dispersible ability was utilized for paint formulation, and chemical resistance of metal coating was observed. The formulation has good mechanical stability, and TGA suggests the thermal stability over 200 °C. This lignin-based functional pigment will find new forms of an environmentally friendly and sustainable method for a cleaner utilization of lignin in metal coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iron scrap is one of the substances rejected in large quantities of by-products from the steel industrial sector. In this work, waste cellulosic fibers and iron shavings were used as reinforcement and abrasive particles, respectively. Two methods of the synthesis of the hybrid composites were applied namely spraying and coating. Different analytical techniques of characterization, i.e., Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), were used to analyze the studied samples. The morphology of the abrasives displayed the presence of spherical grains on the surface with a diameter ranging from 100 to 200 µm. In the spraying process, the surface was characterized by the presence of hollows, bumps, and small empty areas. For the coating process, the fibers of the reinforcement and some drops of resins were visible on the surface of the abrasives. The EDX analysis suggested that the abrading action of the composite surface might be done by tearing off the iron grains. The properties of the matrices, process considered, size of the grains, and their distribution were found to be the principal parameters governing the abrasive process. This paper presents an investigation into the influence of Y-La and Y-Hf-La modifiers on the structure and properties of Ni-Cr-Al consumable cathodes used for heat-resistant coatings on turbine blades via the arc-ion plating method. The study shows that the introduction of these modifiers positively affects the structure formation process of the consumable cathodes. The modifiers contribute to a higher degree of microstructural homogeneity in the cathodes, achieved through the formation of nanosized stabilizing phases between the alloying elements and the rare earth metal groups. This study experimentally confirms that Ni-Cr-Al coatings produced with the Y-La and Y-Hf-La modified cathodes outperform traditional Y-only modified coatings in oxidation tests. Structural analysis of the coatings reveals that samples with Y-Hf-La exhibit greater homogeneity and fewer defects, which is particularly important when depositing coatings with large thicknesses (over 40 µm). It was found that the introduction of the Y-Hf-La complex enables the application of coatings up to 90 µm thick by forming a less defective structure. Additionally, it has been established that Y-Hf-La modification enhances the adhesion of the coating to the substrate and allows for maximum uniformity in the distribution of alloying elements throughout the entire thickness of the applied coating. In order to expand the range of practically useful products based on renewable raw materials, a number of fatty acid derivatives, products of sunflower oil processing, were synthesized. The reaction of methyl esters of fatty acids with mono-, diethanolamine and piperazine yielded the corresponding amides of fatty acids. By reacting ethanolamide derivatives with maleic anhydride, maleated amidoester derivatives of fatty acids containing free carboxyl or hydroxyl groups were synthesized. A copper-containing product was prepared by the interaction of the dimaleinated derivative with copper acetate. All synthesized products showed solubility in alcohols and aromatic solvents. The obtained products were studied as multifunctional components of a film-forming system based on alkyd-urethane varnish brand AU(AL)-52W. It is shown that the synthesized ethanolamide and amidoester derivatives are regulators of the rheological properties of the varnish. Depending on the concentration, they can reduce (by 25–52%) or increase the dynamic viscosity of the varnish. Along with the effect on rheological properties, the synthesized additives in concentrations of up to 0.5–1.5% contribute to increasing the hardness of varnish coatings by 7.5–12.5% and do not negatively affect the drying time. In the present work, the corrosion properties and the surface chemistry of a graphene oxide-coated AZ91D alloy were investigated. The coatings were deposited on the substrate specimens by immersion in solutions with GO concentrations of 0.05% and 0.1% (m/v). An intermediate silane layer was firstly obtained to improve adhesion between the GO films and the AZ91D substrate. The electrochemical behavior of the coated specimens was assessed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization curves in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The surface chemistry was assessed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The GO films consisted of a mixture of carbon-based bonds (C-C, C-OH, C=O, and O-C=O). The surface morphology of the coated specimens was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that the compactness of the GO films was dependent on the deposition conditions. Energy-efficient materials are essential in buildings to reduce energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance indoor comfort. These materials help address the increasing energy demand and environmental impact of traditional construction methods. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review that explores advanced materials and technologies for improving building energy efficiency, sustainability, and occupant comfort. The study applies a comparative analysis of peer-reviewed research to examine key technologies analyzed include building-integrated photovoltaics, advanced insulating materials, reflective and thermal coatings, glazing systems, phase-change materials, and green roofs and walls. The study highlights the significant energy savings, thermal performance, and environmental benefits of these materials. By integrating these technologies, buildings can achieve enhanced energy efficiency, reduced carbon footprints, and improved indoor comfort. The findings underscore the potential of advanced building materials in fostering sustainable construction practices. The methodology of this review involves collecting, analyzing, summarizing, comparing and synthesizing existing research to draw conclusions on the performance and efficiency of these technologies. Slow-release fertilizer was developed by encapsulating NPK compound pellets with graphene oxide (GO) sheets employing a waterless synthesis technique. As-prepared GO sheets were characterized by XRD, Raman, XPS, FTIR, SEM, and EDS. The XRD patterns of the GO sheets indicate that the peak for the GO is observed at 2θ = 9.3°, and the peak (002) for graphite vanished. Moreover, a higher intensity ratio of the Raman ID/IG of the GO sheets than that of pristine graphite confirms the oxidation of the graphite. The FTIR and XPS analyses provided information on electronic structure, chemical structure, and oxygen-bonding neighbors. The SEM images indicated the GO sheet, whereby its morphology resembles a thin curtain or corrugated shape. The EDS spectrum of coated GO-F pellets revealed the distribution of C, O, N, P, and K elements in the synthesized materials. Afterwards, GO shell formation on fertilizer pellets greatly improved the slow-release characteristics of fertilizer, thus providing plants with their requisite nutrients and reducing environmental pollution. Electroless ZnO (≈900 nm) was deposited on the surface of an Mg-Al alloy (AM60) to reduce its degradation in the marine environment. Uncoated and coated ZnO samples were exposed to an SME simulated marine solution for up to 30 days. The AFM and optical images revealed that the corrosion attack on the ZnO-AM60 surface was reduced due to an increase in the surface hydrophobicity of the ZnO coating (contact angle of ≈91.6°). The change in pH to more alkaline values over time was less pronounced for ZnO-AM60 (by ≈13%), whereas the release of Mg 2 + ions was reduced by 34 times, attributed to the decrease in active sites on the Mg-matrix provided by the electroless ZnO coating. The OCP (free corrosion potential) of ZnO-AM60 shifted towards less negative values of ≈100 mV, indicating that electroless ZnO may serve as a good barrier for AM60 in a marine environment. The calculated polarization resistance ( R p ), based on EIS data, was ≈3 times greater for ZnO-AM60 than that of the uncoated substrate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a study on the SnSx (x < 1) decoration of porous TiO2 nanoparticle thin films using the ionic layer adsorption and reaction (ILAR) method. UV-vis absorption measurements revealed a direct bandgap of 1.40–2.10 eV for SnSx (with x = 0.85) and 3.15 eV for TiO2. Degradation of rhodamine B molecules in aqueous solutions shows that coating with a Sn-to-Ti molar ratio of 2% improves the efficiency of the photocatalytic performance of titanium dioxide, but excessive coverage decreases it. We interpret the observed behavior as due to a delicate balance of many competing factors. The formation of intimate interfaces guaranteed by the ILAR growth technique and a nearly optimal alignment of conduction band edges facilitate electron transfer, reducing electron–hole recombination rates. However, the valence hole transfer from TiO2 to SnS reduces the oxidative potential, which is crucial in the degradation mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polymer 3D printing has is used in a wide range of applications in the medical field. Polyamide 12 (PA12) is a versatile synthetic polymer that has been used to reconstruct bony defects. Coating its surface with calcium phosphate compounds, such as hydroxyapatite (HA), could enhance its bonding with bone. The aim of this study was to coat 3D-printed polyamide 12 specimens with hydroxyapatite by a simple innovative surface treatment using light-cured resin cement. Polyamide 12 powder was printed by selective laser sintering to produce 80 disc-shaped specimens (15 mm diameter × 1.5 mm thickness). The specimens were divided randomly into two main groups: (1) control group (untreated), where the surface of the specimens was left without any modifications; (2) treated group, where the surface of the specimens was coated with hydroxyapatite by a new method using a light-cured dental cement. The coated specimens were characterised by both Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), (n = 10/test). The control and treated groups were further randomly subdivided into two subgroups according to the immersion in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The first subgroup was not immersed in PBS and was left as 3D-printed, while the second subgroup was immersed in PBS for 15 days (n = 10/subgroup). The surfaces of the control and treated specimens were examined using an environmental scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA) before and after immersion in PBS. Following the standard American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM D3359), a cross-cut adhesion test was performed. The results of the FTIR spectroscopy of the coated specimens were confirmed the HA bands. The TEM micrograph revealed agglomerated particles in the coat. The SEM micrographs of the control 3D-printed polyamide 12 specimens illustrated the sintered 3D-printed particles with minimal porosity. Their EDXA revealed the presence of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen as atomic%: 52.1, 23.8, 24.1 respectively. After immersion in PBS, there were no major changes in the control specimens as detected by SEM and EDXA. The microstructure of the coated specimens showed deposited clusters of calcium and phosphorus on the surface, in addition to carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, with atomic%: 9.5, 5.9, 7.2, 30.9, and 46.5, respectively. This coat was stable after immersion, as observed by SEM and EDXA. The coat adhesion test demonstrated a stable coat with just a few loose coating flakes (area removed <5%) on the surface of the HA-coated specimens. It could be concluded that the 3D-printed polyamide 12 could be coated with hydroxyapatite using light-cured resin cement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents and demonstrates the development of a new lightweight coating for aluminum alloy from a novel multicomponent alloy based on the AlSiMgCu system. The coating was applied using a newly designed approach that combined high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) and plasma spraying processes. This hybrid technique enables the deposition of coatings with enhanced performance characteristics. The optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM + EDS) revealed a strong adhesion and compaction between the multicomponent coating and the A6061 substrate. The new coating improved hardness by 50% and increased electrical conductivity by approximately 3.3 times compared to the as-cast alloy. Corrosion tests showed a lower corrosion rate, comparable to thermally treated A6061 alloy. Tribological tests indicated over 20% reduction in friction and over 50% reduction in wear rate. This suggests that multicomponent aluminum coatings could improve automotive and parts in contact with hydrogen by enhancing hydrogen fragilization resistance, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and wear properties, with further optimization of thermal spraying potentially boosting performance even further. High-temperature oxidation resistance is the major influence on the high-temperature service stability of refractory high entropy alloys. The oxidation behavior of lightweight Al0.2CrNbTiV refractory high entropy alloy coatings with different dilution ratios at 650 °C and 800 °C deposited by high-speed laser cladding was analyzed in this paper. The oxidation kinetic was analyzed, the oxidation resistance mechanism of the Al0.2CrNbTiV coating was clarified with the analysis of the formation and evolution of the oxidation layer, and the effect of the dilution rate on high-temperature performances was revealed. The results showed that the oxide layer was mainly composed of rutile oxides (Ti, Cr, Nb)O2 after isothermal oxidation at 650 °C and 800 °C for 50 h. The Al0.2CrNbTiV coating in low dilution exhibited better oxidation performance at 650 °C, due to the dense oxide layer formed with the synergistic growth of fine AlVO3 particles and (Ti, Cr, Nb)O2, and higher percentage of Cr, Nb in (Ti, Cr, Nb)O2 strengthened the lattice distortion effect to inhibit the penetration of oxygen. The oxide layer formed at 800 °C for the Al0.2CrNbTiV coating was relatively loose, but the oxidation performance of the coating in high dilution improved due to the precipitation of Cr2Nb-type Laves phases along grain boundaries, which inhibits the diffusion of oxygen. This literature review deals with the electrophoretic deposition of bioactive glass coatings on metallic substrates to produce bone implants. Biocompatible metallic materials, such as titanium alloys or stainless steels, are commonly used to replace hard tissue functions because their mechanical properties are appropriate for load-bearing applications. However, metallic materials barely react in the body. They need a bioactive surface coating to trigger beneficial biological and chemical reactions in the physiological environment. Bioactive coatings aim to improve bone bonding, shorten the healing process after implantation, and extend the lifespan of the implant. Bioactive glasses, such as 45S5, 58S, S53P4, 13-93, or 70S30C, are amorphous materials made of a mixture of oxides that are accepted by the human body. They are used as coatings to improve the surface reactivity of metallic bone implants. Their high bioactivity in the physiological environment induces the formation of strong chemical bonding at the interface between the metallic implant and the surrounding bone tissue. Electrophoretic deposition is one of the most effective solutions to deposit uniform bioactive glass coatings at low temperatures. This article begins with a review of the different compositions of bioactive glasses described in the scientific literature for their ability to support hard tissue repair. The second part details the different stages of the bioactivity process occurring at the surface of bioactive glasses immersed in a physiological environment. Then, the mechanisms involved in the electrophoretic deposition of bioactive glass coatings on metallic bone implants are described. The last part of the article details the current developments in the process of improving the properties of bioactive glass coatings by adding biocompatible elements to the glassy structure. As reported by the FAO, in 2022, approximately 735 million people experienced undernourishment, underscoring the critical need for effective strategies to address micronutrient deficiencies. Among these strategies, the mass fortification of staple foods, particularly rice—a dietary staple for half of the global population—has emerged as one of the most effective approaches. Conventional milling processes diminish the nutritional content of rice, necessitating the development of fortification methods to enhance its nutrient profile. This study investigates advanced fortification techniques to improve the nutritional value of rice, focusing on vitamins B1, B2, and B6, with guidelines from the US Institute of Medicine's Dietary Reference Intakes. The results indicate that implementing ultrasonic treatments and optimal soaking conditions (60 °C for 60 min) significantly enhances the absorption of these vitamins. Effective parameters included a concentration of 1500 ppm for vitamin B1 and higher levels for vitamins B2 and B6, with a rice-to-vitamin solution ratio of 1:4. These conditions yielded an absorbed vitamin B1 content of 1050 mg/kg, bringing the fortified rice closer to meeting recommended intake levels. Given the global average daily consumption of 100 g of rice per person, this research demonstrates the feasibility of fortifying rice to address nutrient deficiencies effectively and contribute to improved dietary health worldwide. Further enhancement of vitamin B2 and B6 levels remains essential for optimal fortification, highlighting the potential of fortified rice as a sustainable solution for improving global nutrition. Polyurethane coatings were synthesized through polyaddition polymerization using various polyols. These polyols included polypropylene glycol with different molecular weights, such as PPG-2000, and PPG-1200, as well as 1,4-butanediol. Additionally different contents of bisphenol F; namely 4.5, 11.5, and 24.2%, as well as methylene diphenyl diisocyanate at an NCO/OH ratio of 2.0. The prepolymer polyurethane films were analyzed to study their characteristics using techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, thixotropic index analysis, and mechanical property evaluations. The pot life and dry times of polyurethane coating containing 11.5% bisphenol F were 90 minutes and 10 hours (time to touch), respectively, with full hardening achieved at 28 hours. Furthermore, the coating exhibited excellent mechanical properties: tensile strength of 80 N/m², elongation of 260%, adhesion strength of 10 MPa (crosshatch), hardness of 95, and a contact angle of 118°. These properties, coupled with its strong adhesion (10 MPa) to metal surfaces, contributed to its outstanding chemical and corrosion resistance. The coatings obtained from the prepolymer polyurethane based on 11.5% bisphenol F exhibited the highest mechanical properties and water, chemical, and corrosion resistance followed by 4.5%, and 24.2%, respectively. Acrylic substrates made from polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) are anticipated to develop craze and scratches owing to their continual wear. In this study, novel silane modified acrylic resin based organic-inorganic hybrid coating materials have been formulated to provide protection to PMMA substrates against wear. Varied amounts (5, 10 and 15 % wt./wt.) of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) were added to the acrylic resin solution (containing xylene and 10% ammonia) and the resultant hybrid coating materials were then coated on PMMA substrates through the dip coating method. The hybrid coating materials were transformed into hard coats upon hydrolysis, condensation and cross-linking. The coated samples were characterized to assess the effect of TEOS addition on optical and mechanical properties as well as abrasion resistance of the hybrid coatings. Hardness, stiffness and reduced elastic modulus of the dry coatings obtained through the instrumented indentation technique were observed to increase (up to ca. 56%, 28% and 65% respectively) whereas their viscous nature and plasticity decreased with the addition of TEOS. The hybrid coatings also demonstrated improved wet abrasion resistance which augurs well with their physico-mechanical properties. These observations can be ascribed to the combined contributions of organic-inorganic phase interactions in the coating materials via hydrogen bonding and the formation of cross-linked silica structures as observed through infrared spectroscopy and microscopy. Copper pillar bumps are widely utilized in advanced packaging technologies, representing a crucial foundation for 3D packaging. However, the mechanical properties of Sn3Ag bumps on copper columns often fall short of meeting increasingly demanding service conditions. Additionally, the loss of effectiveness due to excessive growth of intermetallic compounds at the interface needs to be addressed. To enhance the Sn₃Ag bumps and inhibit the excessive growth of intermetallic compounds, CoSn₃ nanocrystals were prepared, and Sn₃Ag–CoSn₃ composite copper pillar bumps were fabricated through composite electroplating. Upon reflowing, the CoSn3 nanocrystals decomposed, resulting in a significant formation of (Cu,Co)6Sn5 nanoparticles within the Sn3Ag matrix. The (Cu,Co)6Sn5 nanoparticles not only strengthen the solder joints by pinning, but also significantly reduced the excessive growth of interfacial intermetallic compounds, ultimately improving the service performance and reliability of the solder joints.

To improve the corrosion resistance and wide the application of Al alloy sheet in the engineering production, a corrosion potential gradient along the thickness of the Al alloy sheet was fabricated using the sprayed Zn layer. The process of arc spraying was employed to obtain the Zn coating with optimizing the parameters. Electrochemical testing was conducted on the surface of Al alloy sprayed with Zn layers at different depths. As the depth in the thickness direction increases, the content of Zn alloy elements gradually decreases and the potential gradually increases. This exhibits a gradual decrease in corrosion tendency. The results of electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) revealed the existence of pitting corrosion on the surface of the Al alloy. This even extended to the underlying substrate material. In contrast, the Zn coating, when exposed to a corrosive environment, demonstrated the beneficial cathodic effect as a sacrificial anode and the protective function of a passivating film, thus mitigating corrosion. The gradual increase in charge transfer resistance in the impedance spectrum suggested that the corrosion resistance of the sample is increasingly improved. Therefore, it exhibited remarkable resistance to corrosion. Additionally, the SEM surface morphology and XRD pattern were utilized to further explain the corrosion mechanism of the arc-sprayed Zn coating. The Zn coating can provide sacrificial protection to the Al layer due to its higher negative potential and localized corrosion reactivity. This is attributed to the micro-galvanic couples formed between the Zn and Al layer, thus increasing the corrosion resistance of the sheets.

Ni–Al based coating is one of the common high temperature and corrosion resistant protective coatings. In the present paper, the effect of Si content on the formation of Al2O3 layer and the corrosion resistance of Ni–Al coating to chloride molten salt was studied. The research results show that the Ni–Al coatings with varying Si content mainly form NiAl2O4 and Al2O3 oxide layers after pre-oxidation, and form a three-layer structure after molten salt corrosion. The appropriate amount of Si added to the Ni–Al coating can promote the formation of the α-Al2O3 layer during pre-oxidation and thermal corrosion, improving the corrosion resistance of the coating to high temperature chloride molten salt, and hindering the diffusion of Cr elements. Particularly, the Ni–Al coating with Si content of 1.2 at.% has the thickest and densest Al2O3 protective layer, showing the best corrosion resistance. The simulation results shows that compared with the Ni–Al coating without Si, the Cl atoms in the Si-added Ni–Al coating need to overcome greater energy barriers to diffusion during the molten salt corrosion process, which also indicates that the addition of Si can improve the corrosion resistance of the coating.

Complex compositions and structural designs severely restrict the practical application of high-temperature microwave-infrared compatible stealth coatings. To address this issue, high-temperature microwave-infrared compatible stealth coatings of a single 8 wt% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) component are proposed for the first time. Originating from conductive, interfacial and dipole polarization losses, 8YSZ coating presents superior microwave absorbing properties at 900 °C, including strong absorption (minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −50 dB), a thin thickness of 1.5 mm, and a better effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 2 GHz. Moreover, it maintains low infrared emissivity (ε < 0.3) in the infrared bands of 3–5 μm compared with traditional materials. In contrast to the conventional strategy in which microwave-infrared compatible stealth materials are explored in the pool of “complex” multiple-component or metamaterial, this work reveals an avenue to look into materials with simple compositions realizing microwave-infrared compatible stealth simultaneously, which would be of both scientific and technological significance in the fields of stealth technology. Moreover, the present work reveals new applications of 8YSZ coatings in the field of high-temperature stealth technology.

Abstract Purpose Nanoparticles (NPs) as radiosensitizers present a promising strategy for enhancing radiotherapy effectiveness, but their potential is significantly influenced by the properties of their surface coating, which can impact treatment outcomes. Most Monte Carlo studies have focused on metallic NPs without considering the impact of coating layers on radiosensitization. In this study, we aim to assess both the physical and radiobiological effects of nanoparticle coatings in nanoparticle-based radiation therapy. Materials and methods In this simulation study, we used Geant4 Monte Carlo (MC) toolkit (v10.07.p02) and simulated the bismuth, gold, iridium and gadolinium NPs coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG-400: Density: 1.13 g/cm³, Molar mass: 380–420 g/mol) as radiosensitizer for photon beams of 30, 60 and 100 keV. Secondary electron number and reactive oxygen species enhancement factor were estimated. Also, dose enhancement factor (DEF) was determined in spherical shells with logarithmic scale thickness from the nanoparticle surface to 4 mm. Results Secondary electron emission was highest at 30 keV for gold, bismuth, and iridium NPs, while gadolinium NPs peaked at 60 keV. Coating reduced electron emissions across all energies, with thicker coatings leading to a more significant decrease. DEF values declined with increasing radial distance from the NP surface and were lower with thicker coatings. For gadolinium NPs, DEF behavior differed due to K-edge energy effects. Reactive species generation varied, showing maximum production at 30 keV for gold, bismuth, and iridium NPs, while gadolinium NPs showed peak activity at 60 keV. PEG coatings enhanced reactive species formation at 100 keV. Conclusion The findings indicate that the coating layer thickness and material not only influence the emission of secondary particles and DEF but also affect the generation of reactive species from water radiolysis. Specifically, thicker coatings reduce secondary particle emission and DEF, while PEG coatings demonstrate a dual behavior, offering both protective and enhancing effects depending on photon energy. These insights underscore the importance of optimizing NP design and coating in future studies to maximize therapeutic efficacy in nanoparticle-based radiation therapy.

Microwave absorption (MA) materials are essential for protecting against harmful electromagnetic radiation. In this study, highly efficient and ultrawide-band microwave-absorbing fabrics with superhydrophobic surface features were developed using a facile dip-coating method involving in situ graphene oxide (GO) reduction, deposition of TiO2 nanoparticles, and subsequent coating of a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and octadecylamine (ODA) on polyester fabrics. Owing to the presence of hierarchically structured surfaces and low-surface-energy materials, the resultant reduced GO (rGO)/TiO2-ODA/PDMS-coated fabrics demonstrate superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 159° and sliding angle of 5°. Under the synergistic effects of conduction loss, interface polarization loss, and surface roughness topography, the optimized fabrics show excellent microwave absorbing performances with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −47.4 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EABmax) of 7.7 GHz at a small rGO loading of 6.9 wt%. In addition, the rGO/TiO2-ODA/PDMS coating was robust, and the coated fabrics could withstand repeated washing, soiling, long-term ultraviolet irradiation, and chemical attacks without losing their superhydrophobicity and MA properties. Moreover, the coating imparts self-healing properties to the fabrics. This study provides a promising and effective route for the development of robust and flexible materials with microwave-absorbing properties.

In favor of better cultures development and productivity, new studies are seeking different alternatives, efficient technologies, and lower environmental impact to achieve such purposes, thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the application effect of a chitosan-based product in the germination and vigor of corn. The study was carried out at the Ceará State University, Campus Itaperi. A completely randomized design was adopted with four replications of 50 seeds, except for the mass, length tests and image analysis carried out in five replications of 20 seeds. Seeds of the cultivar SM 996 were used and submitted to six concentrations of chitosan-based product: 0.0% (control); 0.5%; 1%; 2.5%; 5%; and 10%. It evaluated the following parameters: first count, germination test, radicle, shoot and seedling length and fresh mass, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, electrolyte extravasation, image computerized analysis by Vigor-S®, emergence, and length, fresh and dry mass of the seedlings in a bed. The use of coating with the bioproduct in corn seeds significantly increased the germination test results, the shoots’ first count emerged in a bed, as well as, root and seedlings fresh mass, fresh and dry mass in the field, length of the seedlings in the field, seedlings total length and growth index obtained by the Vigor-S®. It is concluded that the bioproduct presents as an essential bio-stimulant for corn seeds favoring germination parameters, vigor, and development of the seedlings.

Abstract Background The Mexican lime (Citrus aurantifolia cv.), widely consumed in Iran and globally, is known for its high perishability. Edible coatings have emerged as a popular method to extend the shelf life of fruits, with xanthan gum-based coatings being particularly favored for their environmental benefits. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an edible coating formulated from xanthan gum, enriched with Spirulina platensis (Sp) and pomegranate seed oil (PSO), in improving the quality and reducing the weight loss of Mexican lime fruit under conditions of 20 ± 2 °C and 50–60% relative humidity. Results Based on the results, the application of coatings was generally effective in reducing fruit weight loss, with the least weight loss observed in the xanthan gum 0.2%+ Spirulina platensis extract (1%) treatment. Additionally, the levels of total phenols and flavonoids in the treated fruits exceeded those in the control group, with xanthan gum 0.2%+ Spirulina platensis extract (1%) and xanthan gum 0.2% exhibiting the highest concentrations of these compounds. The antioxidant capacity of the fruits was also enhanced by the coatings, surpassing that of the control group, with xanthan gum 0.2%+ Spirulina platensis extract (1%) achieving the highest levels. The treatments significantly suppressed the activity of the polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzyme, with xanthan gum 0.2% demonstrating the most potent inhibitory effect. Furthermore, the treatments resulted in increased activities of catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) enzymes compared to the control. Except for xanthan gum 0.2%+ pomegranate seed oil (0.05%), all treatments maintained the fruit’s greenness (a*) more effectively than the control. Conclusions Peel browning is a major factor contributing to the decline in quality and shelf life of lime fruit. The application of 0.1% and 0.2% xanthan gum coatings, as well as a combination of 0.2% xanthan gum and Spirulina platensis extract, significantly inhibited PPO activity and enhanced the activity of CAT and POD and phenolic compound in Mexican lime fruits stored at of 20 ± 2 °C for 24 days. Consequently, these treatments comprehensively preserved lime fruit quality by significantly reducing browning, maintaining green color, and preserving internal quality parameters such as TA, thereby enhancing both visual appeal and overall fruit quality.

Hypromellose (HM) is a cellulose-derived polymer of pharmaceutical grade that forms easily from thin films and coatings. As few studies concern HM-formulated systems, this study focuses on the formulation of HM films by incorporating a fatty acid additive, making it possible to control surface properties such as wetting and slip behavior for pharmaceutical or medical applications. The results show that the addition of a very small amount (from 0.1 to 1% w/w) of fatty acid additive reduces HM film affinity for water and water vapor transmission rate, while film appearance and gloss are rather preserved. Surface properties were probed using wettability measurements, Tapping Mode AFM, ATR-FTIR spectrometry, and friction measurements. Tapping Mode AFM images show that the surface roughness reduces by up to 65%. Wettability results show that the surface energy decreases from 43 to 31 mJ.m−2, whereas surface FTIR spectrometry measurements demonstrate that fatty acid molecules migrate on the surface of the formulated films, the driving force being the microphase separation between the polar HM macromolecules and the hydrophobic additive, leading to the formation of a weak boundary layer with poor cohesion. As a consequence, the surface coefficient of friction significantly reduces from 0.38 to 0.08, and fatty acid molecules thus act as a lubricant, improving the sliding properties of HM-based coatings.

Local defects in coatings allow aggressive electrolytes penetrate to the coating/substrate interface, accelerating the corrosion of the exposed Mg substrate and compromising its biocompatibility. In this work, self-healing calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) coating incorporated with 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (3,5-D) or 5-amino salicylic acid (5-A) is designed on Mg. The results reveal that the self-healing and corrosion resistance performance of DCPD improves after adding 3,5-D/5-A. Namely, incorporating 3,5-D/5-A into DCPD accelerates the self-healing process and repair the coating at the initial stage. The released 3,5-D/5-A additives could adsorb on the exposed Mg surface and combine with the Ca2+ ions to precipitate. The interfacial adsorption mechanism of 3,5-D/5-A additives is disclosed by quantum chemical calculation. The simultaneously responsive adsorption and deposition of additives during coating degradation increase the thickness and compactness of the deposition layer at the coating defects, further inhibiting corrosion and stabilizing pH. These findings suggest taking biocompatibility recovery into consideration of preparing self-healing coating for biomedical applications.

In the last decades, corrosion control of metals and their alloys has been of environmental, aesthetic, economic, and technical importance. Ecologically acceptable, environment-friendly, and readily available corrosion inhibitors are one of the best options for protecting metals against corrosion. In this regard, use of polymers for inhibiting metallic corrosion is an authentic and acceptable practice, with a low environmental threat. Polymers may be used as composites, blends, or isolation for optimal inhibitory effects. Inhibition efficiencies of corrosion inhibitors were determined using mass loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization techniques, etc. The present study gives the idea about natural, synthetic, and conducting polymers and their utilization for corrosion inhibition applications. Effects of halide ions as additives or surfactants on their anticorrosion performances are also discussed. Polymeric materials as coatings are reviewed to align with recent research interests, such as cost-effectiveness, environment friendliness, and self-healing products, which are more convenient to synthesize and use in future applications.

The precise combination of conflicting biological properties through sophisticated structural and functional design to meet all the requirements of anastomotic healing is of great demand but remains challenging. Here, we develop a smart responsive anastomotic staple (Ti–OH-MC) by integrating porous titanium anastomotic staple with multifunctional polytannic acid/tannic acid coating. This design achieves dynamic sequential regulation of antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and cell proliferation properties. During the inflammatory phase of the anastomotic stoma, our Ti–OH-MC can release tannic acid to provide antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, together with immune microenvironment regulation function. At the same time, as the healing progresses, the multifunctional coating gradually falls off to expose the porous structure of the titanium anastomotic staple, which promotes cell adhesion and proliferation during the later proliferative and remodeling phases. As a result, our Ti–OH-MC exceeds the properties of clinically used titanium anastomotic staple, and can effectively promote the healing. The staple’s preparation strategy is simple and biocompatible, promising for industrialisation and clinical application. This work provides an effective anastomotic staple for anastomotic stoma healing and serve as a reference for the functional design and preparation of other types of titanium-based tissue repair materials.

This study aims to develop alkyd-aldehyde and alkyd-ketone blends by modification of waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) based alkyd resin with urea-aldehyde (UA) and cyclohexanone formaldehyde (CHF) resins for use in coating applications. PET flakes were depolymerized by simultaneous hydrolysis-glycolysis reaction, and depolymerization product (DP) was used completely instead of the diol in the alkyd synthesis. For comparison, reference alkyds without PET were also synthesized. The effect of modifier resin at different ratios and the presence of DP on the coating and thermal properties of blend films were investigated. Medium-hard/hard and gloss/high gloss films with excellent adhesion and impact resistance were obtained from both blends. These films also demonstrated superior chemical and environmental resistance. Blends with CHF resin had better alkali resistance than those with UA resin. In PET-based blends, thermal resistance significantly increased with the addition of the CHF resin to the alkyd resin. Notably, the use of DP did not show a negative effect on the properties of alkyd resin and blend films. On the contrary, much better results were obtained than the alkyd resin alone. Overall, the modification with UA and CHF modifiers and using DP improved the coating properties of the blends. These blends are expected to be considered a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative for designing versatile coatings for various applications.
