Understanding the role of traits in dispersal is necessary to improve our knowledge of historical biogeography, community assembly processes and predictions of species' future movements. Here we aimed to determine the relationship between three traits (coastal distribution, body size, position on the fast/slow life history continuum) and past dispersal probability on an evolutionary timescale in chameleons (Chamaeleonidae). Using species' distribution data we identified the nine most important biogeographic regions for all included chameleons (181/217 species). We compiled life history trait data and used phylogenetic factor analysis to infer independent body size and fast/slow life history trait axes. Finally, we tested whether traits and trait combinations related to biogeographic dispersal success in the past, using trait‐dependent biogeographic models. All three traits were associated with past biogeographical movements. Lineages having coastal distributions and those with large bodies had higher dispersal probabilities. Interestingly, chameleons with either a very fast or very slow life history were more successful dispersers than species with an intermediate strategy. Together, the three traits – coastal, large‐bodied and extreme life history – form a dispersal syndrome. Traits have played an important role in the biogeographic history of chameleons. While only fast traits have been linked to present‐day invasion success in reptiles, both extremes of the life history spectrum were likely advantageous for dispersal and establishment during past biogeographic movements. Fast‐living species may be less susceptible to stochastic extinction in the first phases of a colonization (due to rapid population growth), and slow‐living species may be less vulnerable to environmental stochasticity (due to low demographic variability). Our results call for broader analyses testing the general influence of life history strategy in biogeographic dispersal success, which would help explain species distribution patterns on Earth. The 2(H)-pyran-2-one bearing electron-donating tert-butylcarbamate (BocNH-) group at the 5- position is a "chameleon" diene and undergoes efficient Diels–Alder cycloadditions with alkene dienophiles with both electron-rich and electron-deficient substituents. Cycloadditions afford the 5-substituted bicyclic lactone cycloadducts regardless of the electronic nature of the dienophile. Clustering consists of various applications on machine learning, image segmentation, data mining and pattern recognition. The proper selection of clustering is significant in feature selection. Therefore, in this paper, a Text Feature Selection (FS) and Clustering using Grasshopper–Chameleon Swarm Optimization with Density Peaks Clustering algorithm (TFSC-G-CSOA-DPCA) is proposed. Initially, the input features are pre-processed for converting text into numerical form. These preprocessed text features are given to Grasshopper–Chameleon Swarm Optimization Algorithm, which selects important text features. In Grasshopper–Chameleon Swarm Optimization Algorithm, the Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm selects local feature from text document and Chameleon Swarm Optimization Algorithm selects the best global feature from local feature. These important features are tested using density peaks clustering algorithm to maximize the reliability and minimize the computational time cost. The performance of Grasshopper–Chameleon Swarm Optimization Algorithm is analyzed with 20 News groups dataset. Moreover, the performance metrics, like accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, execution time and memory usage are analyzed. The simulation process shows that the proposed TFSC-G-CSOA-DPCA method provides better accuracy of 97.36%, 95.14%, 94.67% and 91.91% and maximum sensitivity of 96.25%, 87.25%, 93.96% and 92.59% compared to the existing methods such as TFSC-BBA-MCL, TFSC-MVO-K-Means C, TFSC-GWO-GOA-FCM and TFSC-WM-K-Means C, respectively. Background: Squamate reptiles (lizards, snakes, and amphisbaenians) exhibit incredible diversity in their locomotion, behavior, morphology, and ecological breadth. Although they often are used as models of locomotor diversity, surprisingly little attention has been given to muscle development in squamate reptiles. In fact, the most detailed examination was conducted almost 80 years ago and solely focused on the proximal limb regions. Herein, we present forelimb and hindlimb muscle morphogenesis data for three lizard species with different locomotion and feeding strategies: the desert grassland whiptail lizard, the central bearded dragon, and the veiled chameleon. This study fills critical gaps in our understanding of muscle morphogenesis in squamate reptiles and presents a comparative and temporospatial analysis of muscle development. Results: Our results reveal a conserved pattern of early muscle development among lizards with different adult morphologies and ecologies. The variations that exist are concentrated in distal regions, particularly the specialized autopodia of chameleons, where differentiation of muscles associated with the digits is delayed. Conclusions: The chameleon autopod provides an example of major evolutionary modifications to the skeleton with only minor disruption of the conserved order and pattern of limb muscle development. This robustness of muscle patterning facilitates the evolution of extreme yet functional phenotypes. Sex-specific reproductive strategies are shaped by the distribution of potential mates in space and time. Labord's chameleon (Furcifer labordi) from southwestern Madagascar is the shortest-lived tetrapod whose life-time mating opportunities are restricted to a few weeks. Given that these chameleons grow to sexual maturity within about three months and that all individuals die soon after breeding, their mating strategies should be adapted to these temporal constraints. The reproductive tactics of this or any other Malagasy chameleon species have not been studied, however. Radio-tracking and observations of 21 females and 18 males revealed that females exhibit high site fidelity, move small cumulative and linear distances, have low corresponding dispersal ratios and small occurrence distributions. In contrast, males moved larger distances in less predictable fashion, resulting in dispersal ratios and occurrence distributions 7–14 times larger than those of females, and males also had greater ranges of their vertical distribution. Despite synchronous hatching, males exhibited substantial inter-individual variation in body mass and snout-vent length that was significantly greater than in females, but apparently unrelated to their spatial tactics. Females mated with up to 6 individually-known mates, but frequent encounters with unmarked individuals indicate that much higher number of matings may be common, as are damaging fights among males. Thus, unlike perennial chameleons, F. labordi males do not seem to maintain and defend territories. Instead, they invest vastly more time and energy into locomotion for their body size than other species. Pronounced variation in key somatic traits may hint at the existence of alternative reproductive tactics, but its causes and consequences require further study. This first preliminary study of the mating system of a Malagasy chameleon indicates that, as in other semelparous tetrapods, accelerated life histories are tied to a mating system with intense contest and scramble competition among males. A missing chapter in the history of postwar left-wing Hong Kong cinema involves the channeling of its energies into television in the 1970s. At Rediffusion (RTV), producer Lee Sil-hong – son of director Lee Sun-fung – mobilized veterans from the classical period of the left-wing studios to produce a tetralogy of serialized television dramas that represent the apotheosis of the jiating lunli pian, not only resurrecting the spirit behind such classic Union melodramas as In the Face of Demolition (1953) or their celebrated adaptation of Ba Jin's "Torrents" trilogy, but doing so with an epic ambition with regard to historical scope and scale that had been inconceivable even in the heyday of left-wing Hong Kong cinema in the 1950s. Providing a panoramic account of twentieth--century Chinese history, Lee's tetralogy – Chameleon (1978), Gone with the Wind (1980), Fatherland (1980), and Hong Kong Gentlemen (1981) – predates by at least a decade attempts by China's Fifth Generation, New Taiwan Cinema, and the Hong Kong New Wave to address such subject matter in comparable fashion through the social epic or family melodrama. Factors that made possible Lee's achievement include: (i) the central importance of television as a medium for the expression of local cultural identity during the period of Hong Kong's economic takeoff, (ii) the renewal on television of left-wing filmmaking philosophy and practices inherited from Thirties Shanghai and Fifties Hong Kong, and (iii) the social realist sensibility of the left-wing tradition – along with its strong interest in the transcultural adaptation of foreign literature – that allowed it to frame local experience in terms of the global, benefitting from an awareness of both the 19th-century European novel and the contemporary American television epic. Situating Lee's tetralogy within the broader historical context of persistent Chinese left-wing efforts across generations to contest politically rival screen practices, this essay analyzes Chameleon for its distinctive worldview and methods characteristic of the jiating lunli pian, while assessing its functional aesthetic as rooted in the literature-inspired realist melodrama with didactic aims – an inherited tradition to which it contributed a magisterial endpoint but beyond which it was unwilling to advance, unlike the groundbreaking modernism of the Hong Kong New Wave's television work. Voltage-gated sodium and calcium channels are distinct, evolutionarily related ion channels that achieve remarkable ion selectivity despite sharing an overall similar structure. Classical studies have shown that ion selectivity is determined by specific binding of ions to the channel pore, enabled by signature amino acid sequences within the selectivity filter (SF). By studying ancestral channels in the pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis), Guan et al. showed in a recent JBC article that this well-established mechanism can be tuned by alternative splicing, allowing a single CaV3 gene to encode both a Ca2+-permeable and an Na+- permeable channel depending on the cellular context. The article presents a study which explores the invasive chameleons released from predation display more conspicuous colors. It mentions the findings of the study demonstrate that relaxed predation pressure can result in character release of dynamic social signals in introduced species experiencing strong sexual selection.

A two-year-old male veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) was referred for a gular oedema and bilateral blepharoedema. The echocardiography revealed a ventricular hypertrophy, pericardial effusion, and valvular regurgitation of the right atrioventricular valve. Treatment with hydrochlorothiazide, enalapril, and carvedilol was commenced. Within 3 weeks of treatment, the valvular regurgitation was noticeably decreased. In the 4th week of treatment, the echocardiography revealed a reduction in the myocardium hypertrophy. After an additional month of home treatment, the patient was presented with anorexia and decreased activity. Despite the supportive care, the patient died. The histopathology revealed mild to moderate fibrosis of the epicardium. Moderate to severe fibrosis, degeneration of the myofibrils, fatty atrophy, interstitial oedema and mild calcification was seen in the atria. The tunica intima, media and adventitia of the major cardiac vessels were moderately fibrotic, swollen and interfused by myxoedema. The kidney histopathology revealed moderate sclerosis and atrophy of the glomeruli, vacuolation of the tubular epithelium, fibrosis, and infiltration of the leucocytes in the interstitium. The therapeutic protocol with hydrochlorothiazide, ACE inhibitor enalapril and β-blocker carvedilol reduced the myocardium hypertrophy and the valvular regurgitation; however, the prolonged use of diuretics jeopardized the renal function in our patient. The Critically Endangered Chapman's pygmy chameleon Rhampholeon chapmanorum is endemic to the low elevation rainforest of the Malawi Hills in southern Malawi. Much of this forest has been converted to agriculture and it was uncertain whether chameleon populations have persisted. We used current and historical satellite imagery to identify remaining forest patches and assess deforestation. We then surveyed forest patches for the presence of this chameleon, and assessed its genetic diversity and structure. We estimated that 80% of the forest has been destroyed since 1984, although we found extant populations of the chameleon in each of the patches surveyed. Differentiation of genetic structure was strong between populations, suggesting that gene flow has been impaired. Genetic diversity was not low, but this could be the result of a temporal lag as well as lack of sensitivity in the mitochondrial marker used. Overall, the impact of forest loss is assumed to have led to a large demographic decline, with forest fragmentation preventing gene flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chameleon signatures introduced by Krawczyk and Rabin are based on well-established hash-and-sign paradigm. It is a non-interactive signature scheme that simultaneously provides the properties of non-transferability and non-repudiation. The chameleon hash function is a trapdoor one-way function which prevents everyone except the holder of the trapdoor information from computing collision on a message digest. The chameleon signature scheme achieves non-transferability as the recipient of the signature is the holder of the trapdoor information. He could be able to compute collision on the hash value and hence no third party could be able to identify the real signer. In the initial constructions of chameleon signature schemes, the occurrences of collisions expose the secret key of the recipient. This strongly prevents the recipient to compute hash collisions, partially undermining the concept of non-transferability. Hence it is important to overcome this key exposure problem, and its aligned problems of key revocation and key redistribution. Also the existing chameleon signature schemes are based on the hard problems in number theory such as integer factorization or the discrete log problem over various groups. The construction of a large-scale quantum computer would render insecurity to these schemes. Hence as recommended by NISTIR 8105, we propose a quantum resistant chameleon hashing and signature scheme based on hard problems in coding theory. The scheme also satisfies the security properties of chameleon signature, such as collision resistance, semantic security, key exposure freeness, non-transferability and unforgeability. As code-based cryptosystem is an important candidate of postquantum cryptosystem, the proposed code-based chameleon signature scheme would be a promising alternative to the number theoretic based schemes. In addition, we also propose a method to transform the code-based chameleon hashing scheme into an ordinary signature scheme and prove its unforgeability in the random oracle model. The mechanisms that underpin ecological speciation, morphological convergence and the evolution of ecological morphotypes (ecomorphs) in squamates have allowed for a better appreciation of the speciation process in chameleons. In particular, attention has been drawn to several populations of chameleons (Sauria, Chamaeleonidae, Bradypodion) from the Cape Fold Mountains, South Africa. Previous work suggested that these populations are genetically divergent, but with strong similarities in phenotype. Using an integrative taxonomic approach that accounts for genetic diversity, habitat and morphology, three of these populations are described as species. One population is from an isolated forest patch and is genetically different at the species level, but morphologically similar to Bradypodion damaranum (Boulenger, 1887) from forested areas in the Knysna region. Although not sister species, the two are in the same clade and probably diverged through vicariance of the forest. Two other populations are from fynbos habitat in adjacent mountain ranges (Tsitsikamma/Langkloof/Kouga mountains and Baviaanskloof Mountains) and are also morphologically similar, but genetically divergent at the species level. These two species are not sister taxa and are not in the same clade yet have a virtually identical phenotype presumably as the result of convergent evolution for the fynbos habitat. Within the context of morphological taxonomy, these populations have been difficult to evaluate. However, when viewed in the context of ecological speciation, convergence and morphological conservatism, the species boundaries are apparent, allowing for them to be described as new taxa. Although reproductive strategies are poorly documented in chameleons, sperm storage has been confirmed among some species for which male reproductive success may be maximised by increasing the number of females inseminated and/or preventing subsequent female copulation with rival males. Behaviour, such as mate searching, may enable males to maximise the number of mating opportunities with different partners and mate guarding may increase the likelihood that a male will sire offspring with a particular female. In this study, we investigated behavioural differences in movement (distance travelled) and perch choice between sexes of the Cape Dwarf Chameleon, Bradypodion pumilum, to offer data for a better understanding of mate searching and mate guarding behaviours. Wild chameleons were radio-tracked in 2010 (n = 8) and 2014 (n = 5) for approximately two weeks. The geographic location and perch height above ground were recorded multiple times per day to capture both the scale of movement and their perch use. Linear mixed effect models were used to assess differences between sexes. Our results indicated that females perched lower than males and moved shorter distances, offering support of a mate searching strategy in males. Ad hoc field observations revealed behaviours consistent with mate guarding by some males, and mate avoidance by some unreceptive females. Our results could indicate that males increase their reproductive fitness by using higher perches in both a mate guarding and mate searching context and moving further distances in search of receptive females. Nowadays time-stamped data is being generated by a variety of applications and stored in a variety of database systems. Depending on the data structure and the importance of the time aspect those database systems may be either general-purpose or time-series oriented. Most popular time-series DBMS use only simple data types for non-time values, whereas generalpurpose databases usually lack specialized query methods designed for time-series aspects. Each of those solutions has some drawbacks as far as data handling is concerned. Extending SQL with built-in time series focused components enables the combination of relational queries with document and time-series-oriented queries. At the same time, the popularity of SQL among data analysts and data scientists would give them the benefit of an easy start. This paper presents such an extension and introduces ChQL, a query language designed to work with both document data and multivariate time series. This language is designed to imitate the syntax of the Python language, so that it could be easily integrated as a library into object-oriented languages such as Python, Javascript, or PHP. The main architectural concept behind the data model for both languages is to use a mixed data model based on both document and time-series storage. We here describe fossil remains from three Lower and Middle Miocene localities of Anatolia, which we tentatively refer to chamaeleonids. The material comprises isolated tooth-bearing bones from the Early Miocene (MN 3) of Sabuncubeli (western Anatolia), the Early Miocene (MN 4) of Dededağ (western Anatolia), and the Middle Miocene (MN 5) of the world-renowned hominoid locality of Paşalar (northwestern Anatolia). If our identifications are correct, these specimens would represent the only fossil record of this group from Anatolia as well as the oldest occurrences of chameleons from Asia. Moreover, the recovery of these specimens across different Lower and Middle Miocene localities, suggest that these animals were a typical element of the Anatolian herpetofaunas of the early Neogene. Differences among the specimens from the three localities point to a higher taxonomic diversity of Miocene Anatolian chamaeleonids, however, based on such limited material, intraspecific or ontogenetic variation cannot be ruled out. The oldest among these occurrences, the Sabuncubeli material, coincides chronologically with the oldest chameleons, which had been previously described from Central Europe (MN 3). As such, this supports the recently suggested biogeographic scenario, according to which chamaeleonids dispersed from Afro-Arabia to Europe during the Burdigalian, via the "Gomphotherium Landbridge," through Anatolia and the Balkans. Finally, a few additional lizard and snake remains from the locality of Dededağ are described, adding to the poorly known fossil herpetofaunas of Anatolia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The faster-X/Z effect hypothesis states that genes linked to X/Z chromosomes should accumulate mutations faster than autosomal genes. Although faster evolution of X/Z-linked genes has been reported in several plant and animal lineages, conflicting results have been reported in others. We examined the faster-Z effect in chameleons of the genus Furcifer, a lineage with differentiated ZZ/ZW chromosomes for at least 20 million years. We sequenced the genomes of four species of Furcifer chameleons in the Illumina platform and compared the substitution rates of synonymous and non-synonymous mutations and their ratios among autosomal, Z-specific, and pseudoautosomal protein-coding genes. The inclusion of two chameleon outgroups lacking the differentiated ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes allowed us to control for gene-specific evolutionary rates that might confound the testing of the faster-X/Z effect. Significant differences in evolutionary rates were found between autosomal, Z-specific, and pseudoautosomal genes of Furcifer chameleons. However, the inclusion of the outgroups with different sex chromosomes suggests that these genes had different evolutionary rates prior to their incorporation into the differentiated ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes of the Furcifer genus. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic autoimmune disease. Gastrointestinal manifesting as nausea, vomiting, and pain abdomen are not so uncommon in SLE flare. However, gastrointestinal intestinal vasculitis as an initial presenter of SLE is very rare. This case report narrated gastrointestinal vasculitis as an initial presentation of systemic lupus erythematous, which mimicked lithium toxicity in a patient of preexisting bipolar disorder who was on long-term lithium therapy. A 26-year-old female presented with abdominal pain and persistent vomiting for 2 months. On further workup, she was antinuclear, anti-Smith, and anti-ds-DNA antibody positive. The serum lithium level was found to be normal computed tomography angiogram of the abdomen suggestive of vasculitis. A final diagnosis of SLE with gastrointestinal vasculitis as an initial presenter was made. She was treated with high-dose corticosteroid, cyclophosphamide, and other supportive care. She improved dramatically and was discharged with an oral corticosteroid, hydroxychloroquine, and ramipril. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The traditional approach to Niger-Congo gender systems conflates the number markers of nouns and the gender-number markers of adnominals and pronouns into a single category of 'class markers'. Using Jóola Fóoñi as an illustration, this paper discusses several types of phenomena commonly found in these systems that are problematic for the traditional notion of noun class and support the necessity of a revision of the conceptual and terminological framework commonly used in the description of Niger-Congo gender systems. The Nguru spiny pygmy chameleon (Rhampholeon acuminatus) is endemic to the Nguru mountains in Tanzania. It is assessed as Critically Endangered and is collected from the wild for the pet trade. An ex-situ population of this species was recently established at The Wild Planet Trust, Paignton Zoo, in the hope of learning more about the husbandry and biology of this species. We report on the captive husbandry of adults and the successful breeding, hatching and rearing of juveniles. Females carried four eggs but laid them in pairs. When eggs were incubated at 19.2-22.8 °C, hatchlings emerged roughly 180 days after laying. The hatchlings had a total length of about 30 mm and weighed 0.2-0.3 g. To our knowledge, this is the first published account of captive breeding for this species. The husbandry methods described could be used to establish populations of this and other Rhampholeon species in captivity, which in turn would reduce the demand for wild caught (Rhampholeon), as well as inform future conservation breeding programmes for this species. A 3-yr-old female panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) was presented with a history of long-term inactivity, anorexia, and difficulty defecating. Using sonographic examination, we diagnosed preovulatory follicular stasis with suspected ovarian cysts. Surgical management was elected, and the ovaries were intertwined and showed severe torsion and morphologic changes. The colon was caught within the entanglement, resulting in obstipation and urate retention. After ovariectomy, the animal was able to pass feces 17 h postsurgery and regained appetite. Preovulatory follicular stasis, as well as constipation, are commonly seen conditions in reptiles; however, torsions are rarely described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 4-yr-old, captive-bred, male veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) presented with anorexia, weight loss, and stomatitis. Complete blood count revealed pancytopenia and a marked leukocytosis (197 × 103/µL) composed of blast cells (195 × 103/µL) that had oval to irregular nuclei with finely stippled chromatin and occasional nucleoli. The diagnosis was acute leukemia of presumptive myeloid origin. Treatment with prednisone (1.5 mg/kg once daily orally) and cytosine arabinoside (300 mg/m2 subcutaneously) was initiated. Post treatment hematologic analysis revealed decreased blast count (88.5 × 103/µL) and improved mentation. Additional doses of cytosine arabinoside were given 2 and 3 wk after the initial diagnosis with marked improvement in circulating blast concentration (15.3 × 103/µL). During the course of treatment, which included the chemotherapeutics, fluid therapy, and oral supportive care, the chameleon's weight increased 32.5% (199–295 g). Unfortunately, the animal died 33 days after presentation. Histopathologic evaluation revealed hypocellular bone marrow with rare, blast-like cells within vessels and mycotic granulomatous hepatitis with intralesional hyphae and fructiferous bodies. The blast cells expressed Iba1 but not CD3, CD79a, or lysozyme, suggesting a myeloid origin. Cell morphology further reinforced an acute myeloid leukemia. The authors surmised that the chameleon was responding to treatment, but ultimately succumbed to the mycotic hepatitis. Background: Pronounced asymmetric changes in ocular globe size during eye development have been observed in a number of species ranging from humans to lizards. In contrast, largely symmetric changes in globe size have been described for other species like rodents. We propose that asymmetric changes in the three‐dimensional structure of the developing eye correlate with the types of retinal remodeling needed to produce areas of high photoreceptor density. To test this idea, we systematically examined three‐dimensional aspects of globe size as a function of eye development in the bifoveated brown anole, Anolis sagrei. Results: During embryonic development, the anole eye undergoes dynamic changes in ocular shape. Initially spherical, the eye elongates in the presumptive foveal regions of the retina and then proceeds through a period of retraction that returns the eye to its spherical shape. During this period of retraction, pit formation and photoreceptor cell packing are observed. We found a similar pattern of elongation and retraction associated with the single fovea of the veiled chameleon, Chamaeleo calyptratus. Conclusions: These results, together with those reported for other foveated species, support the idea that areas of high photoreceptor packing occur in regions where the ocular globe asymmetrically elongates and retracts during development. We present the complete genome sequences of Caribbean watersnake bornavirus (CWBV) and Mexican black-tailed rattlesnake bornavirus (MRBV), which we identified in archived raw transcriptomic read data of a Caribbean watersnake (Tretanorhinus variabilis) and a Mexican black-tailed rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus nigrescens), respectively. The genomes of CWBV and MRBV have a length of about 8,900 nucleotides and comprise the complete coding regions and the untranslated regions. The overall genomic makeup and predicted gene content is typical for members of the genus Orthobornavirus within the family Bornaviridae. Alternative splicing was detected for the L and M genes. Based on a phylogenetic analysis of all viral proteins, we consider both viruses to be members of a single novel species within the genus Orthobornavirus. Both viruses form a distinct outgroup to all currently known orthobornaviruses. Based on the novel virus genomes, we furthermore identified closely related endogenous bornavirus-like nucleoprotein sequences in transcriptomic data of veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) and a common lancehead (Bothrops atrox). New complexes of Eu(III) and Tb(III) tris(β-diketonates) with Lewis bases were synthesized. The spin-coating technique was used to produce composite films consisting of polystyrene (PS) polymer doped with mixtures of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes with different ratio of luminophores. An increase in the content of the Tb(III) complexes in the 5 %Eu x%Tb films intensifies emission of both the Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions due to occurring intermolecular energy transfer and leads to a significant increase in photostability of the material (the loss of luminescence intensity ratio did not exceed 0.5 %/hour). These photostable films were characterized as potential luminescent temperature sensors. The temperature sensitivity of their luminescence intensity and lifetime was investigated in the range of 298–383 K. The maximum absolute sensitivity of the films reaches 6.00 µs/K and exceeds that of all known lanthanide-containing thermal sensors designed for measuring physiological temperatures. A recent research article published in Angewandte Chemie by Guanjun Xiao et al. discusses the discovery of an all-inorganic zero-dimensional metal-halide perovskite with a significant piezochromic range. The researchers used a diamond anvil cell to observe the pressure-induced piezochromic behavior in Cs3Cu2Cl5 nanocrystals. The nanocrystals exhibited a shift in emission energy from red fluorescence to blue fluorescence, covering the entire visible wavelength range. One special variety of Burmese amber is "chameleon" amber, named for the bluish-green colour that appears to float on its surface. This material is found in the famous Tengchong market in Yunnan Province, China's largest Burmese amber market. Its bodycolour ranges from golden brown to brownish-red or even red. When exposed to sunlight or strong white light against a black background, its surface shows a uniform green colour. This research presents the gemological properties, spectral characteristics and organic components of Burmese 'chameleon' amber. Three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence spectra showed that Burmese 'chameleon' amber had fluorescence centres near 433, 465 and 470 nm, and the excitation wavelengths of the fluorescence centres of Burmese 'chameleon' amber were shifted from the ultraviolet region (380 ± 10 nm) to the visible region (410 ± 10 nm), with the emission wavelengths concentrated at the bluish-green region. Through the colour simulation and superimposition, the phenomenon of floating bluish-green fluorescence colour of Burmese 'chameleon' amber is not only derived from bluish-green fluorescence centres, but also enhanced by the mixture of surface fluorescence and its bodycolour. Headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC–MS) analysis demonstrated the variety of aromatic compounds in Burmese 'chameleon' amber was related to geological process and the presence of fluorescence components. The high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector obtained some fluorescent aromatics, particularly benzo[a]anthracene with yellowish-green fluorescence, which is responsible for the fluorescence characteristics of Burmese 'chameleon' amber. Few studies have considered the capabilities of gastropods living in minerally-deficient acidified coastal waters to compensate for outer shell corrosion or compromised growing edge shell production. We compared inner shell thickening between pristine shells (control) and corroded shells (experiment) of two related intertidal neritid gastropod species from reduced salinity and acidified environments. We predicted that the rocky-shore, Nerita chamaeleon , which has greater access to shell building biomineralization substrates, should better control shell thickness than the estuarine, Neripteron violaceum. Accordingly, N. chameleon was found to compensate perfectly for variation in the thickness of the outer calcitic blocky layer (BL). Optimal shell thickness (OST) was maintained by selective reabsorption of the aperture ridge of the distal shell (aragonitic crossed-lamellar layer, CL) and by increased internal deposition of proximal (older) shell (aragonitic protocrossed lamellar, PCL). Despite greater exposure to acidification and hyposalinity, N. violaceum showed no significant compensatory shell thickening. These findings reveal that shell thickening capability may vary greatly among intertidal gastropods and that this may be constrained by environmental biomineralization substrate availability.
