101. Dissecting Fine-Tuning Unlearning in Large Language Models

Abstract: Fine-tuning-based unlearning methods prevail for preventing targeted harmful, sensitive, or copyrighted information within large language models while preserving overall capabilities. However, the true effectiveness of these methods is unclear. In this work, we delve into the limitations of fine-tuning-based unlearning through activation patching and parameter restoration experiments. Our findings reveal that these methods alter the model's knowledge retrieval process, providing further evidence that they do not genuinely erase the problematic knowledge embedded in the model parameters. Instead, the coefficients generated by the MLP components in the model's final layer are the primary contributors to these seemingly positive unlearning effects, playing a crucial role in controlling the model's behaviors. Furthermore, behavioral tests demonstrate that this unlearning mechanism inevitably impacts the global behavior of the models, affecting unrelated knowledge or capabilities. 102. Engineering the Nonlinearity of Bosonic Modes with a Multi-loop SQUID

Abstract: Engineering high-order nonlinearities while suppressing lower-order terms is crucial for quantum error correction and state control in bosonic systems, yet it remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we introduce a general framework of Nonlinearity-Engineered Multi-loop SQUID (NEMS) device, enabling the realization of arbitrary nonlinearities by tuning fluxes in multiple loops within superconducting circuits. We demonstrate specific examples of NEMS devices that selectively engineer pure cubic, quartic, and quintic interactions with suppressed parasitic couplings, showing great promise for realizing Kerr-cat bias-preserving {\scshape cnot} gates and stabilizing four-leg cat qubits. By opening new avenues for tailoring nonlinear Hamiltonians of superconducting devices, this work enables sophisticated and precise manipulation of bosonic modes, with potential applications in quantum computation, simulation, and sensing., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures

103. O1 Replication Journey: A Strategic Progress Report -- Part 1

Abstract: This paper introduces a pioneering approach to artificial intelligence research, embodied in our O1 Replication Journey. In response to the announcement of OpenAI's groundbreaking O1 model, we embark on a transparent, real-time exploration to replicate its capabilities while reimagining the process of conducting and communicating AI research. Our methodology addresses critical challenges in modern AI research, including the insularity of prolonged team-based projects, delayed information sharing, and the lack of recognition for diverse contributions. By providing comprehensive, real-time documentation of our replication efforts, including both successes and failures, we aim to foster open science, accelerate collective advancement, and lay the groundwork for AI-driven scientific discovery. Our research progress report diverges significantly from traditional research papers, offering continuous updates, full process transparency, and active community engagement throughout the research journey. Technologically, we proposed the journey learning paradigm, which encourages models to learn not just shortcuts, but the complete exploration process, including trial and error, reflection, and backtracking. With only 327 training samples and without any additional tricks, journey learning outperformed conventional supervised learning by over 8\% on the MATH dataset, demonstrating its extremely powerful potential. We believe this to be the most crucial component of O1 technology that we have successfully decoded. Abstract: Using (2712.4 $\pm$ 14.3)$\times 10^{6}$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, a partial wave analysis of the decay $\psi(3686) \to \phi \eta \eta' $ is performed with the covariant tensor approach. An axial-vector state with a mass near 2.3 $\rm GeV/c^2$ is observed for the first time. Its mass and width are measured to be 2316 $\pm 9_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 30_{\mathrm{syst}}\,\rm MeV/c^2$ and 89 $\pm 15_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 26_{\mathrm{syst}}\,\rm MeV$, respectively. The product branching fractions of $\mathcal{B}(\psi(3686) \to X(2300) \eta') \mathcal{B}(X(2300)\to \phi \eta)$ and $\mathcal{B}(\psi(3686) \to X(2300) \eta)\mathcal{B}(X(2300)\to \phi \eta')$ are determined to be (4.8 $\pm 1.3_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.7_{\mathrm{syst}})\times 10^{-6}$ and (2.2 $\pm 0.7_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.7_{\mathrm{syst}})\times 10^{-6}$, respectively. The branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(\psi(3686) \to \phi \eta \eta')$ is measured for the first time to be (3.14$\pm0.17_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.24_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-5}$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Abstract: We search for the radiative decays $D^{+} \to \gamma \rho^+$ and $D^{+} \to \gamma K^{*+}$ using 20.3~fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. No significant signals are observed, and the upper limits on the branching fractions of $D^{+} \to \gamma \rho^+$ and $D^{+} \to \gamma K^{*+}$ at 90\% confidence level are set to be $1.3\times10^{-5}$ and $1.8\times10^{-5}$, respectively.

106. Enhancing SPARQL Generation by Triplet-order-sensitive Pre-training

Abstract: Semantic parsing that translates natural language queries to SPARQL is of great importance for Knowledge Graph Question Answering (KGQA) systems. Although pre-trained language models like T5 have achieved significant success in the Text-to-SPARQL task, their generated outputs still exhibit notable errors specific to the SPARQL language, such as triplet flips. To address this challenge and further improve the performance, we propose an additional pre-training stage with a new objective, Triplet Order Correction (TOC), along with the commonly used Masked Language Modeling (MLM), to collectively enhance the model's sensitivity to triplet order and SPARQL syntax. 107. Mitigating Modality Prior-Induced Hallucinations in Multimodal Large Language Models via Deciphering Attention Causality

Abstract: Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have emerged as a central focus in both industry and academia, but often suffer from biases introduced by visual and language priors, which can lead to multimodal hallucination. These biases arise from the visual encoder and the Large Language Model (LLM) backbone, affecting the attention mechanism responsible for aligning multimodal inputs. Existing decoding-based mitigation methods focus on statistical correlations and overlook the causal relationships between attention mechanisms and model output, limiting their effectiveness in addressing these biases. To tackle this issue, we propose a causal inference framework termed CausalMM that applies structural causal modeling to MLLMs, treating modality priors as a confounder between attention mechanisms and output. Specifically, by employing backdoor adjustment and counterfactual reasoning at both the visual and language attention levels, our method mitigates the negative effects of modality priors and enhances the alignment of MLLM's inputs and outputs, with a maximum score improvement of 65.3% on 6 VLind-Bench indicators and 164 points on MME Benchmark compared to conventional methods. 108. Self-rationalization improves LLM as a fine-grained judge

Abstract: LLM-as-a-judge models have been used for evaluating both human and AI generated content, specifically by providing scores and rationales. Rationales, in addition to increasing transparency, help models learn to calibrate its judgments. Enhancing a model's rationale can therefore improve its calibration abilities and ultimately the ability to score content. We introduce Self-Rationalization, an iterative process of improving the rationales for the judge models, which consequently improves the score for fine-grained customizable scoring criteria (i.e., likert-scale scoring with arbitrary evaluation criteria). Self-rationalization works by having the model generate multiple judgments with rationales for the same input, curating a preference pair dataset from its own judgements, and iteratively fine-tuning the judge via DPO. Intuitively, this approach allows the judge model to self-improve by learning from its own rationales, leading to better alignment and evaluation accuracy. After just two iterations -- while only relying on examples in the training set -- human evaluation shows that our judge model learns to produce higher quality rationales, with a win rate of $62\%$ on average compared to models just trained via SFT on rationale . This judge model also achieves high scoring accuracy on BigGen Bench and Reward Bench, outperforming even bigger sized models trained using SFT with rationale, self-consistency or best-of-$N$ sampling by $3\%$ to $9\%$.

109. Constructing probing functions for direct sampling methods for inverse scattering problems with limited-aperture data: finite space framework and deep probing network

Abstract: This work studies an inverse scattering problem when limited-aperture data are available that are from just one or a few incident fields. This inverse problem is highly ill-posed due to the limited receivers and a few incident fields employed. Solving inverse scattering problems with limited-aperture data is important in applications as collecting full data is often either unrealistic or too expensive. The direct sampling methods (DSMs) with full-aperture data can effectively and stably estimate the locations and geometric shapes of the unknown scatterers with a very limited number of incident waves. However, a direct application of DSMs to the case of limited receivers would face the resolution limit. To break this limitation, we propose a finite space framework with two specific schemes, and an unsupervised deep learning strategy to construct effective probing functions for the DSMs in the case with limited-aperture data. Several representative numerical experiments are carried out to illustrate and compare the performance of different proposed schemes.

110. CAR: Controllable Autoregressive Modeling for Visual Generation

Abstract: Controllable generation, which enables fine-grained control over generated outputs, has emerged as a critical focus in visual generative models. Currently, there are two primary technical approaches in visual generation: diffusion models and autoregressive models. Diffusion models, as exemplified by ControlNet and T2I-Adapter, offer advanced control mechanisms, whereas autoregressive models, despite showcasing impressive generative quality and scalability, remain underexplored in terms of controllability and flexibility. In this study, we introduce Controllable AutoRegressive Modeling (CAR), a novel, plug-and-play framework that integrates conditional control into multi-scale latent variable modeling, enabling efficient control generation within a pre-trained visual autoregressive model. CAR progressively refines and captures control representations, which are injected into each autoregressive step of the pre-trained model to guide the generation process. Our approach demonstrates excellent controllability across various types of conditions and delivers higher image quality compared to previous methods. Additionally, CAR achieves robust generalization with significantly fewer training resources compared to those required for pre-training the model. Abstract: We report the detection of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source coincident with the locations of middle-aged (62.4~\rm kyr) pulsar PSR J0248+6021, by using the LHAASO-WCDA data of live 796 days and LHAASO-KM2A data of live 1216 days. A significant excess of \gray induced showers is observed both by WCDA in energy bands of 1-25~\rm TeV and KM2A in energy bands of $>$ 25~\rm TeV with 7.3 $\sigma$ and 13.5 $\sigma$, respectively. The best-fit position derived through WCDA data is R.A. = 42.06$^\circ \pm$ 0.12$^\circ$ and Dec. = 60.24$^\circ \pm $ 0.13$^\circ$ with an extension of 0.69$^\circ\pm$0.15$^\circ$ and that of the KM2A data is R.A.= 42.29$^\circ \pm $ 0.13$^\circ$ and Dec. = 60.38$^\circ \pm$ 0.07$^\circ$ with an extension of 0.37$^\circ\pm$0.07$^\circ$. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of this LHAASO source has been found from the radio band to the GeV band. The most plausible explanation of the VHE \gray emission is the inverse Compton process of highly relativistic electrons and positrons injected by the pulsar. 112. Distillation-Free One-Step Diffusion for Real-World Image Super-Resolution

Abstract: Diffusion models have been achieving excellent performance for real-world image super-resolution (Real-ISR) with considerable computational costs. Current approaches are trying to derive one-step diffusion models from multi-step counterparts through knowledge distillation. However, these methods incur substantial training costs and may constrain the performance of the student model by the teacher's limitations. To tackle these issues, we propose DFOSD, a Distillation-Free One-Step Diffusion model. Specifically, we propose a noise-aware discriminator (NAD) to participate in adversarial training, further enhancing the authenticity of the generated content. Additionally, we improve the perceptual loss with edge-aware DISTS (EA-DISTS) to enhance the model's ability to generate fine details. Our experiments demonstrate that, compared with previous diffusion-based methods requiring dozens or even hundreds of steps, our DFOSD attains comparable or even superior results in both quantitative metrics and qualitative evaluations. 113. Flatbands from Bound States in the Continuum for Orbital Angular Momentum Localization

Abstract: A flatband material is a system characterized by energy bands with zero dispersion, allowing for the compact localization of wavefunctions in real space. This compact localization significantly enhances inter-particle correlations and light-matter interactions, leading to notable advancements such as fractional Chern insulators in condensed matter systems and flat-band lasers in photonics. Previous flatband platforms, including twisted bilayer graphene and artificial kagome/Lieb lattices, typically focused on nondegenerate flatbands, lacking access to the high degeneracy that can facilitate the localization of orbital angular momentum (OAM). Here, we propose a general framework to construct highly degenerate flatbands from bound states in the continuum (BICs)--a concept originating from quantum theory but significantly developed in photonics and acoustics in recent years. The degeneracy of flatbands is determined by the number of BICs within each unit cell in a lattice. We experimentally validate this approach in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) acoustic crystals, demonstrating flatbands with 4-fold and 12-fold degeneracies, respectively. The high degeneracy provides sufficient internal degrees of freedom, enabling the selective excitation of localized OAM at any position in any direction. 114. Penalized Sparse Covariance Regression with High Dimensional Covariates

Abstract: Covariance regression offers an effective way to model the large covariance matrix with the auxiliary similarity matrices. In this work, we propose a sparse covariance regression (SCR) approach to handle the potentially high-dimensional predictors (i.e., similarity matrices). Specifically, we use the penalization method to identify the informative predictors and estimate their associated coefficients simultaneously. We first investigate the Lasso estimator and subsequently consider the folded concave penalized estimation methods (e.g., SCAD and MCP). However, the theoretical analysis of the existing penalization methods is primarily based on i.i.d. data, which is not directly applicable to our scenario. To address this difficulty, we establish the non-asymptotic error bounds by exploiting the spectral properties of the covariance matrix and similarity matrices. Then, we derive the estimation error bound for the Lasso estimator and establish the desirable oracle property of the folded concave penalized estimator. Abstract: ASPIRE (A SPectroscopic survey of bIased halos in the Reionization Era) is a quasar legacy survey primarily using JWST to target a sample of 25 $z>6$ quasars with NIRCam slitless spectroscopy and imaging. The first study in this series found evidence of a strong overdensity of galaxies around J0305-3150, a luminous quasar at $z=6.61$, within a single NIRCam pointing obtained in JWST Cycle 1. Here, we present the first results of a JWST Cycle 2 mosaic that covers 35 arcmin$^2$ with NIRCam imaging/WFSS of the same field to investigate the spatial extent of the putative protocluster. 117. Accelerating Diffusion Transformers with Token-wise Feature Caching

Abstract: Diffusion transformers have shown significant effectiveness in both image and video synthesis at the expense of huge computation costs. To address this problem, feature caching methods have been introduced to accelerate diffusion transformers by caching the features in previous timesteps and reusing them in the following timesteps. However, previous caching methods ignore that different tokens exhibit different sensitivities to feature caching, and feature caching on some tokens may lead to 10$\times$ more destruction to the overall generation quality compared with other tokens. In this paper, we introduce token-wise feature caching, allowing us to adaptively select the most suitable tokens for caching, and further enable us to apply different caching ratios to neural layers in different types and depths. Extensive experiments on PixArt-$\alpha$, OpenSora, and DiT demonstrate our effectiveness in both image and video generation with no requirements for training. For instance, 2.36$\times$ and 1.93$\times$ acceleration are achieved on OpenSora and PixArt-$\alpha$ with almost no drop in generation quality.

118. Look Twice Before You Answer: Memory-Space Visual Retracing for Hallucination Mitigation in Multimodal Large Language Models

Abstract: Despite their impressive capabilities, Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) are susceptible to hallucinations, especially assertively fabricating content not present in the visual inputs. To address the aforementioned challenge, we follow a common cognitive process - when one's initial memory of critical on-sight details fades, it is intuitive to look at them a second time to seek a factual and accurate answer. Therefore, we introduce Memory-space Visual Retracing (MemVR), a novel hallucination mitigation paradigm that without the need for external knowledge retrieval or additional fine-tuning. In particular, we treat visual prompts as supplementary evidence to be reinjected into MLLMs via Feed Forward Network (FFN) as key-value memory, when the model is uncertain or even amnesic about question-relevant visual memories. Comprehensive experimental evaluations demonstrate that MemVR significantly mitigates hallucination issues across various MLLMs and excels in general benchmarks without incurring added time overhead, thus emphasizing its potential for widespread applicability.

Abstract: Let $K$ be a non-archimedean local field of residual characteristic $p\neq 2$. Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over $K$, let $\theta$ be an involution of $G$ over $K$, and let $H$ be the connected component of $\theta$-fixed subgroup of $G$ over $K$. By realizing the Steinberg representation of $G$ as the $G$-space of complex smooth harmonic cochains following the idea of Broussous--Court\`es, we study its space of distinction by $H$ as a finite dimensional complex vector space. We give an upper bound of the dimension, and under certain conditions, we show that the upper bound is sharp by explicitly constructing a basis using the technique of Poincar\'e series. Finally, we apply our general theory to the case where $G$ is a general linear group and $H$ a special orthogonal subgroup, which leads to a complete classification result., Comment: 75 pages, 8 figures. Abstract: Using $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4$ fb$^{-1}$, the forward-backward asymmetry in the $pp \to Z/\gamma^{*} \to \mu^+\mu^-$ process is measured. The measurement is carried out in ten intervals of the difference between the muon pseudorapidities, within a fiducial region covering dimuon masses between $66$ and $116$ GeV, muon pseudorapidities between $2.0$ and $4.5$ and muon transverse momenta above $20$ GeV. These forward-backward asymmetries are compared with predictions, at next-to-leading order in the strong and electroweak couplings. The measured effective leptonic weak mixing angle is $\sin^2\theta_{\rm eff}^\ell = 0.23147 \pm 0.00044 \pm 0.00005 \pm 0.00023$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second arises from systematic uncertainties associated with the asymmetry measurement, and the third arises from uncertainties in the fit model used to extract $\sin^2\theta_{\rm eff}^\ell$ from the asymmetry measurement. 121. Towards a Theoretical Understanding of Memorization in Diffusion Models

Abstract: As diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) are being employed as mainstream models for Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), the study of their memorization of training data has attracted growing attention. Existing works in this direction aim to establish an understanding of whether or to what extent DPMs learn via memorization. Such an understanding is crucial for identifying potential risks of data leakage and copyright infringement in diffusion models and, more importantly, for trustworthy application of GenAI. Existing works revealed that conditional DPMs are more prone to training data memorization than unconditional DPMs, and the motivated data extraction methods are mostly for conditional DPMs. However, these understandings are primarily empirical, and extracting training data from unconditional models has been found to be extremely challenging. In this work, we provide a theoretical understanding of memorization in both conditional and unconditional DPMs under the assumption of model convergence. Our theoretical analysis indicates that extracting data from unconditional models can also be effective by constructing a proper surrogate condition. Based on this result, we propose a novel data extraction method named \textbf{Surrogate condItional Data Extraction (SIDE)} that leverages a time-dependent classifier trained on the generated data as a surrogate condition to extract training data from unconditional DPMs. Empirical results demonstrate that our SIDE can extract training data in challenging scenarios where previous methods fail, and it is, on average, over 50\% more effective across different scales of the CelebA dataset., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2406.12752

122. IoT-LLM: Enhancing Real-World IoT Task Reasoning with Large Language Models

Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities across textual and visual domains but often generate outputs that violate physical laws, revealing a gap in their understanding of the physical world. Inspired by human cognition, where perception is fundamental to reasoning, we explore augmenting LLMs with enhanced perception abilities using Internet of Things (IoT) sensor data and pertinent knowledge for IoT task reasoning in the physical world. In this work, we systematically study LLMs capability to address real-world IoT tasks by augmenting their perception and knowledge base, and then propose a unified framework, IoT-LLM, to enhance such capability. In IoT-LLM, we customize three steps for LLMs: preprocessing IoT data into formats amenable to LLMs, activating their commonsense knowledge through chain-of-thought prompting and specialized role definitions, and expanding their understanding via IoT-oriented retrieval-augmented generation based on in-context learning. To evaluate the performance, We design a new benchmark with five real-world IoT tasks with different data types and reasoning difficulties and provide the benchmarking results on six open-source and close-source LLMs. Experimental results demonstrate the limitations of existing LLMs with naive textual inputs that cannot perform these tasks effectively. We show that IoT-LLM significantly enhances the performance of IoT tasks reasoning of LLM, such as GPT-4, achieving an average improvement of 65% across various tasks against previous methods. The results also showcase LLMs ability to comprehend IoT data and the physical law behind data by providing a reasoning process. Abstract: Based on 7.33 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies from 4.128 to 4.226 GeV, a search for the Majorana neutrino $\nu_m$ is conducted in the lepton-number-violating decays of $D_s^+\to h^-h^0e^+e^+$. Here, $h^-$ represents a $K^-$ or $\pi^-$, and $h^0$ represents a $\pi^0$, $K_S^0$ or $\phi$. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limits of their branching fractions at the 90\% confidence level are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to \phi\pi^-e^+e^+) < 6.9 \times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to \phi K^-e^+e^+) < 9.9 \times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K_S^0\pi^-e^+e^+) < 1.3 \times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K_S^0K^-e^+e^+) < 2.9 \times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to \pi^-\pi^0e^+e^+) < 2.9 \times 10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^-\pi^0e^+e^+) < 3.4 \times 10^{-5}$. The Majorana neutrino is searched for with different mass assumptions within the range [0.20, 0.80] GeV$/c^2$ in the decay of $D_s^+\to\phi e^+\nu_m$ with $\nu_m\to\pi^-e^+$, and the upper limits of the branching fractions at the 90\% confidence level are at the level of $10^{-5}-10^{-2}$, depending on the mass of the Majorana neutrino.

Abstract: Multi-label data stream usually contains noisy labels in the real-world applications, namely occuring in both relevant and irrelevant labels. However, existing online multi-label classification methods are mostly limited in terms of label quality and fail to deal with the case of noisy labels. On the other hand, the ground-truth label distribution may vary with the time changing, which is hidden in the observed noisy label distribution and difficult to track, posing a major challenge for concept drift adaptation. Motivated by this, we propose an online multi-label classification algorithm under Noisy and Changing Label Distribution (NCLD). The convex objective is designed to simultaneously model the label scoring and the label ranking for high accuracy, whose robustness to NCLD benefits from three novel works: 1) The local feature graph is used to reconstruct the label scores jointly with the observed labels, and an unbiased ranking loss is derived and applied to learn reliable ranking information. 2) By detecting the difference between two adjacent chunks with the unbiased label cardinality, we identify the change in the ground-truth label distribution and reset the ranking or all information learned from the past to match the new distribution. 3) Efficient and accurate updating is achieved based on the updating rule derived from the closed-form optimal model solution. Finally, empirical experimental results validate the effectiveness of our method in classifying instances under NCLD.

Abstract: Integrating modern artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, particularly generative AI, holds the promise of revolutionizing computer-aided design (CAD) tools and the engineering design process. However, the direction of "AI+CAD" remains unclear: how will the current generation of intelligent CAD (ICAD) differ from its predecessor in the 1980s and 1990s, what strategic pathways should researchers and engineers pursue for its implementation, and what potential technical challenges might arise? As an attempt to address these questions, this paper investigates the transformative role of modern AI techniques in advancing CAD towards ICAD. It first analyzes the design process and reconsiders the roles AI techniques can assume in this process, highlighting how they can restructure the path humans, computers, and designs interact with each other. Abstract: The prevalence of vision-threatening eye diseases is a significant global burden, with many cases remaining undiagnosed or diagnosed too late for effective treatment. Large vision-language models (LVLMs) have the potential to assist in understanding anatomical information, diagnosing eye diseases, and drafting interpretations and follow-up plans, thereby reducing the burden on clinicians and improving access to eye care. However, limited benchmarks are available to assess LVLMs' performance in ophthalmology-specific applications. In this study, we introduce LMOD, a large-scale multimodal ophthalmology benchmark consisting of 21,993 instances across (1) five ophthalmic imaging modalities: optical coherence tomography, color fundus photographs, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, lens photographs, and surgical scenes; (2) free-text, demographic, and disease biomarker information; and (3) primary ophthalmology-specific applications such as anatomical information understanding, disease diagnosis, and subgroup analysis. In addition, we benchmarked 13 state-of-the-art LVLM representatives from closed-source, open-source, and medical domains. The results demonstrate a significant performance drop for LVLMs in ophthalmology compared to other domains. Systematic error analysis further identified six major failure modes: misclassification, failure to abstain, inconsistent reasoning, hallucination, assertions without justification, and lack of domain-specific knowledge. In contrast, supervised neural networks specifically trained on these tasks as baselines demonstrated high accuracy. Abstract: Understanding when and how reionization happened is crucial for studying the early structure formation and the properties of first galaxies in the Universe. At $z>5.5$, the observed IGM optical depth shows a significant scatter, indicating an inhomogeneous reionization process. However, the nature of the inhomogeneous reionization remains debated. ASPIRE is a JWST Cycle 1 program that has spectroscopically identified $>400$ [OIII] emitters in 25 quasar fields at $z>6.5$. Combined with deep ground-based optical spectroscopy of ASPIRE quasars, ASPIRE program provides the current largest sample for IGM-galaxy connection studies during cosmic reionization. We present the first results of IGM effective optical depth measurements around [OIII] emitters using 14 ASPIRE quasar fields. We find the IGM transmission is tightly related with reionization-era galaxies to the extent that significant excess of Ly$\alpha$ transmission exists around [OIII] emitters. We measure the stacked IGM effective optical depth of IGM patches associated with [OIII] emitters and find they reach the same IGM effective optical depth at least dz~0.1 ahead of those IGM patches where no [OIII] emitters are detected, supporting earlier reionization around [OIII] emitters. Our results indicate an enhancement in IGM Ly$\alpha$ transmission around [OIII] emitters at scales beyond 25 $h^{-1}$ cMpc, consistent with the predicted topology of reionization from fluctuating UV background (UVB) models., Comment: 27 pages, 19 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: The absence of global magnetic fields is often cited to explain why Mars lacks a dense atmosphere. This line of thought is based on a prevailing theory that magnetic fields can shield the atmosphere from solar wind erosion. However, we present observations here to demonstrate a counterintuitive understanding: unlike the global intrinsic magnetic field, the remnant crustal magnetic fields can enhance atmosphere loss when considering loss induced by plasma wave-particle interactions. An analysis of MAVEN data, combined with observation-based simulations, reveals that the bulk of O+ ions would be in resonance with ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves when the latter were present. This interaction then results in significant particle energization, thus enhancing ion escaping. A more detailed analysis attributes the occurrence of the resonance to the presence of Mars' crustal magnetic fields, which cause the majority of nearby ions to gyrate at a frequency matching the resonant condition ({\omega}-k_{\parallel} v_{\parallel}={\Omega}_i) of the waves. The ULF waves, fundamental drivers of this entire process, are excited and propelled by the upstream solar wind. Abstract: The interaction between Ribonucleic Acids (RNAs) and proteins, also called RNA Protein Interaction (RPI), plays an important role in the life activities of organisms, including in various regulatory processes, such as gene splicing, gene localization, and disease pathogenesis. RPI Prediction (RPIP) predicts the interactions between RNAs and proteins, which includes looking for the existence of interactions and the binding sites of interactions, and adding RNA-protein functional annotations (such as immunity regulation, neuroprotection, etc). Due to the huge amounts of complex biological data, Deep Learning-based RPIP (DL-based RPIP) has been widely investigated, as it can extract high-dimensional features from data and make accurate predictions. Over the last decade, there have been many achievements and contributions in DL-based RPIP. Although some previous studies review DL-based RPIP, to the best of our knowledge, there is still a lack of a comprehensive survey. In this paper, we extensively survey DL-based RPIP in terms of its entire process, including: feature encoding, deep learning modeling, results evaluation, RPIP application domains, and available websites and software. We also identify some open research challenges, and discuss the potential future work for DL-based RPIP.

Abstract: We present Uni$^2$Det, a brand new framework for unified and universal multi-dataset training on 3D detection, enabling robust performance across diverse domains and generalization to unseen domains. Due to substantial disparities in data distribution and variations in taxonomy across diverse domains, training such a detector by simply merging datasets poses a significant challenge. Motivated by this observation, we introduce multi-stage prompting modules for multi-dataset 3D detection, which leverages prompts based on the characteristics of corresponding datasets to mitigate existing differences. This elegant design facilitates seamless plug-and-play integration within various advanced 3D detection frameworks in a unified manner, while also allowing straightforward adaptation for universal applicability across datasets. Experiments are conducted across multiple dataset consolidation scenarios involving KITTI, Waymo, and nuScenes, demonstrating that our Uni$^2$Det outperforms existing methods by a large margin in multi-dataset training. 134. Frequency Adaptive Normalization For Non-stationary Time Series Forecasting

Abstract: Time series forecasting typically needs to address non-stationary data with evolving trend and seasonal patterns. To address the non-stationarity, reversible instance normalization has been recently proposed to alleviate impacts from the trend with certain statistical measures, e.g., mean and variance. Although they demonstrate improved predictive accuracy, they are limited to expressing basic trends and are incapable of handling seasonal patterns. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a new instance normalization solution, called frequency adaptive normalization (FAN), which extends instance normalization in handling both dynamic trend and seasonal patterns. Specifically, we employ the Fourier transform to identify instance-wise predominant frequent components that cover most non-stationary factors. Furthermore, the discrepancy of those frequency components between inputs and outputs is explicitly modeled as a prediction task with a simple MLP model. FAN is a model-agnostic method that can be applied to arbitrary predictive backbones. We instantiate FAN on four widely used forecasting models as the backbone and evaluate their prediction performance improvements on eight benchmark datasets. Abstract: The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a future Higgs factory to measure the Higgs boson properties. Like the other future experiments, the simulation software plays a crucial role in CEPC for detector designs, algorithm optimization and physics studies. Due to similar requirements, the software stack from the Key4hep project has been adopted by CEPC. As the initial application of Key4hep, a simulation framework has been developed for CEPC based on DD4hep, EDM4hep and k4FWCore since 2020. However, the current simulation framework for CEPC lacks support for the parallel computing. To benefit from the multi-threading techniques, the Gaussino project from the LHCb experiment has been chosen as the next simulation framework in Key4hep. This contribution presents the application of Gaussino for CEPC. 136. Spatial Fluctuation of the Electric Field within SF6 Streamer Channel in Highly Non-Uniform Fields: Phenomenon, Validation, and Mechanism

Abstract: The electric field within the streamer channel is a critical parameter in the calculation model for the nonlinear breakdown voltage of SF6, motivating the research presented in this paper. By using a 2D fluid model, we investigate the microscopic characteristics of the SF6 streamer channel in highly non-uniform fields and uncover a previously unexplained coherent structure: the spatial fluctuation of the electric field (SFEF). We validate the physical validity of SFEF by modifying model parameters that could potentially introduce non-physical effects. Further comparative analysis reveals that SFEF is driven by an ion-conducting channel formed due to the strong electronegativity of SF6. This ion-conducting channel exhibits local characteristics, which fundamentally arise from the slow response of charged species to local charge relaxation. We identify that some charge separation originates from the accumulation of negative ions at the rear edge of the streamer head due to strong electric field shielding in this region. As the streamer propagates, charge separation is continuously generated and passively carried into the streamer channel, ultimately forming the SFEF. Finally, we confirm that SFEF does not occur in uniform fields, indicating that it is a phenomenon exclusive to highly non-uniform fields. These findings provide a deep insight into the electric field within the SF6 streamer channel and offer a potential avenue for further investigation into the mechanisms of SF6 nonlinear breakdown voltage.

137. A Multi-station Meteor Monitoring (M$^3$) System. I. Design and Testing

Abstract: Meteors carry important and indispensable information about the interplanetary environment, which can be used to understand the origin and evolution of our solar system. We have developed a Multi-station Meteor Monitoring ($\rm M^3$) system that can observe almost the entire sky and detect meteors automatically, and it determines their trajectories. They are highly extensible to construct a large-scale network. Each station consists of a waterproof casing, a wide field-of-view lens with a CMOS camera, and a supporting computer. The camera has a built-in GPS module for accurately timing the meteoroid entry into the atmosphere (accurate to 1 $\mu$s), which is the most prominent characteristic compared with other existing meteor monitoring devices. We have also developed a software package that can efficiently identify and measure meteors appearing in the real-time video stream and compute the orbits of meteoroids in the solar system via multi-station observations. During the Geminid meteor shower in 2021, the M$^3$ system was tested at two stations ($\sim$55 km apart) in the suburbs of Beijing. The test results show that the astrometric accuracy is about 0.3-0.4 arcmin. About 800 meteors were detected by these two stations. A total of 473 meteors have their orbits calculated by our software, and 377 of them belong to the Geminid meteoroid stream. 139. How do Practitioners Perceive Energy Consumption on Stack Overflow?

Abstract: Energy consumption of software applications has emerged as a critical issue for practitioners to contemplate in their daily development processes. Previous studies have performed user surveys with a limited number of practitioners to comprehend practitioners' viewpoints on energy consumption. In this paper, we complement prior studies by conducting an empirical analysis of a meticulously curated dataset comprising 985 Stack Overflow (SO) questions concerning energy consumption. These questions reflect real-world energy-related predicaments faced by practitioners in their daily development activities. To understand practitioners' perception of energy consumption, we investigate the intentions behind these questions, their semantic topics, as well as the tag categories associated with these questions. Our empirical study results reveal that (i) the intentions that drive the questioners to initiate posts and ask questions are primarily associated with understanding a concept or how to use an API; (ii) the most prevalent topic related to energy consumption concerns computing resources; (iii) monitoring energy usage poses a challenging issue, and it takes the longest response time to receive a community response to the questions; and (iv) practitioners are apprehensive about energy consumption from different levels, i.e., hardware, operating systems, and programming languages, during the development of the applications. Our work furnishes insights into the issues related to energy consumption faced by practitioners. Our observations raise awareness among practitioners about the impact of energy consumption on developing software systems from different perspectives, such as coding efficiency and energy monitoring, and shed light on future research opportunities to assist practitioners in developing energy-efficient software systems.

Abstract: Aims. We present an extensive catalog of the physical properties of more than a million galaxies within the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), one of the largest spectroscopic surveys to date. Spanning over a full variety of target types, including emission line galaxies and luminous red galaxies as well as quasars, our survey encompasses an unprecedented range of spectroscopic redshifts, stretching from 0 to 6. Methods. The physical properties, such as stellar masses and star formation rates, are derived via the CIGALE spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code accounting for the contribution coming from active galactic nuclei (AGN). Based on the modeling of the optical-mid-infrared (grz complemented by WISE photometry) SEDs, we study galaxy properties with respect to their location on the main sequence. Results. We revise the dependence of stellar mass estimates on model choices and availability of the WISE photometry. The WISE information is mandatory to minimize the misclassification of star-forming galaxies as AGN. Given the diverse nature of visual data, MultiModal Large Language Models (MM-LLMs) exhibit variations in model designing and training for understanding images, short videos, and long videos. Our paper focuses on the substantial differences and unique challenges posed by long video understanding compared to static image and short video understanding. Unlike static images, short videos encompass sequential frames with both spatial and within-event temporal information, while long videos consist of multiple events with between-event and long-term temporal information. In this survey, we aim to trace and summarize the advancements of MM-LLMs from image understanding to long video understanding. We review the differences among various visual understanding tasks and highlight the challenges in long video understanding, including more fine-grained spatiotemporal details, dynamic events, and long-term dependencies. We then provide a detailed summary of the advancements in MM-LLMs in terms of model design and training methodologies for understanding long videos. While there are many tools developed to automatically redact the logs for identifying and removing sensitive information, they have severe limitations which can cause either over redaction and loss of critical diagnostic information (false positives), or disclosure of sensitive information (false negatives), or both. To address the problem, in this paper, we argue for a source code analysis approach for log redaction. To identify a log message containing sensitive information, our method locates the corresponding log statement in the source code with logger code augmentation, and checks if the log statement outputs data from sensitive sources by using the data flow graph built from the source code. Appropriate redaction rules are further applied depending on the sensitiveness of the data sources to preserve the privacy information in the logs. We conducted experimental evaluation and comparison with other popular baselines. The results demonstrate that our approach can significantly improve the detection precision of the sensitive information and reduce both false positives and negatives.

143. A complete waveform comparison of post-Newtonian and numerical relativity in eccentric orbits

Abstract: This study presents a thorough comparative analysis between post-Newtonian (PN) and numerically relativistic (NR) waveforms in eccentric orbits, covering nonspinning and spin-aligned configurations. The comparison examines frequency, amplitude, and phase characteristics of various harmonic modes, such as 22, 21, 33, 32, 44, 43, and 55 modes. The study utilizes eccentric PN waveforms based on 3PN quasi-Keplerian parameterization with 3PN radiative reaction, surpassing Newtonian quadrupole moment with higher-order moments. NR waveforms from RIT and SXS catalogs span mass ratios from 1/4 to 1, eccentricities up to 0.45, and durations exceeding $17000M$ across nonspinning and spin-aligned configurations. Focusing on the 22 mode, frequency comparisons between quadrupole and higher-order moments of $\Psi_4^{22}$ and $h^{22}$ were conducted. Amplitude comparisons revealed superior accuracy in quadrupole moments of $\Psi_4^{22}$. Analysis of total 180 sets of eccentric waveforms showed increasing fitting residuals with rising eccentricity, correlating with smaller mass ratios. Comparisons of initial eccentricity from PN fitting, 3PN quasi-Keplerian parameterization, and RIT/SXS catalogs revealed alignment discrepancies. Abstract: The rocketing prosperity of large language models (LLMs) in recent years has boosted the prevalence of vision-language models (VLMs) in the medical sector. In our online medical consultation scenario, a doctor responds to the texts and images provided by a patient in multiple rounds to diagnose her/his health condition, forming a multi-turn multimodal medical dialogue format. Unlike high-quality images captured by professional equipment in traditional medical visual question answering (Med-VQA), the images in our case are taken by patients' mobile phones. These images have poor quality control, with issues such as excessive background elements and the lesion area being significantly off-center, leading to degradation of vision-language alignment in the model training phase. In this paper, we propose ZALM3, a Zero-shot strategy to improve vision-language ALignment in Multi-turn Multimodal Medical dialogue. Since we observe that the preceding text conversations before an image can infer the regions of interest (RoIs) in the image, ZALM3 employs an LLM to summarize the keywords from the preceding context and a visual grounding model to extract the RoIs. The updated images eliminate unnecessary background noise and provide more effective vision-language alignment. To better evaluate our proposed method, we design a new subjective assessment metric for multi-turn unimodal/multimodal medical dialogue to provide a fine-grained performance comparison. Our experiments across three different clinical departments remarkably demonstrate the efficacy of ZALM3 with statistical significance.

Abstract: A search for the very rare $B^{*0}\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B_{s}^{*0}\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decays is conducted by analysing the $B_c^+\to \pi^+\mu^+\mu^-$ process. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9$\text{\,fb}^{-1}$. The signal signatures correspond to simultaneous peaks in the $\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\pi^+\mu^+\mu^-$ invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed for either signal decay mode. 146. EventHDR: from Event to High-Speed HDR Videos and Beyond

Abstract: Event cameras are innovative neuromorphic sensors that asynchronously capture the scene dynamics. Due to the event-triggering mechanism, such cameras record event streams with much shorter response latency and higher intensity sensitivity compared to conventional cameras. On the basis of these features, previous works have attempted to reconstruct high dynamic range (HDR) videos from events, but have either suffered from unrealistic artifacts or failed to provide sufficiently high frame rates. In this paper, we present a recurrent convolutional neural network that reconstruct high-speed HDR videos from event sequences, with a key frame guidance to prevent potential error accumulation caused by the sparse event data. Additionally, to address the problem of severely limited real dataset, we develop a new optical system to collect a real-world dataset with paired high-speed HDR videos and event streams, facilitating future research in this field. Our dataset provides the first real paired dataset for event-to-HDR reconstruction, avoiding potential inaccuracies from simulation strategies. Experimental results demonstrate that our method can generate high-quality, high-speed HDR videos. Abstract: In this paper, we explore the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a black hole surrounded by a fluid of strings within the framework of Rastall gravity. We analyze the behavior of scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational perturbations, focusing on the influence of the black hole charge $Q$ and angular momentum $l$ on the quasinormal frequencies. Our numerical results reveal a significant dependence on the parameter $\varepsilon$. These trends are consistent across different types of perturbations, emphasizing the relationship between black hole parameters and QNMs behavior.

148. Conditional Testing based on Localized Conformal p-values

Abstract: In this paper, we address conditional testing problems through the conformal inference framework. We define the localized conformal p-values by inverting prediction intervals and prove their theoretical properties. These defined p-values are then applied to several conditional testing problems to illustrate their practicality. Firstly, we propose a conditional outlier detection procedure to test for outliers in the conditional distribution with finite-sample false discovery rate (FDR) control. We also introduce a novel conditional label screening problem with the goal of screening multivariate response variables and propose a screening procedure to control the family-wise error rate (FWER). Finally, we consider the two-sample conditional distribution test and define a weighted U-statistic through the aggregation of localized p-values. Numerical simulations and real-data examples validate the superior performance of our proposed strategies.

149. Exploring Information-Theoretic Metrics Associated with Neural Collapse in Supervised Training

Abstract: In this paper, we utilize information-theoretic metrics like matrix entropy and mutual information to analyze supervised learning. We explore the information content of data representations and classification head weights and their information interplay during supervised training. Experiments show that matrix entropy cannot solely describe the interaction of the information content of data representation and classification head weights but it can effectively reflect the similarity and clustering behavior of the data. Inspired by this, we propose a cross-modal alignment loss to improve the alignment between the representations of the same class from different modalities. Moreover, in order to assess the interaction of the information content of data representation and classification head weights more accurately, we utilize new metrics like matrix mutual information ratio (MIR) and matrix information entropy difference ratio (HDR). 150. The Cosmic Evolution of the Supermassive Black Hole Population: A Hybrid Observed Accretion and Simulated Mergers Approach

Abstract: Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) can grow through both accretion and mergers. It is still unclear how SMBHs evolve under these two channels from high redshifts to the SMBH population we observe in the local universe. Observations can directly constrain the accretion channel but cannot effectively constrain mergers yet, while cosmological simulations provide galaxy merger information but can hardly return accretion properties consistent with observations. In this work, we combine the observed accretion channel and the simulated merger channel, taking advantage of both observations and cosmological simulations, to depict a realistic evolution pattern of the SMBH population. With this methodology, we can derive the scaling relation between the black-hole mass ($M_\mathrm{BH}$) and host-galaxy stellar mass ($M_\star$) and the local black-hole mass function (BHMF). Our scaling relation is lower than those based on dynamically measured $M_\mathrm{BH}$, supporting the claim that dynamically measured SMBH samples may be biased. We show that the scaling relation has little redshift evolution. The BHMF steadily increases from $z=4$ to $z=1$ and remains largely unchanged from $z=1$ to $z=0$. The overall SMBH growth is generally dominated by the accretion channel, with possible exceptions at high mass ($M_\mathrm{BH}\gtrsim10^{8}~M_\odot$ or $M_\star\gtrsim10^{11}~M_\odot$) and low redshift ($z\lesssim1$). We also predict that around 25% of the total SMBH mass budget in the local universe may be locked within long-lived, wandering SMBHs, and the wandering mass fraction and wandering SMBH counts increase with $M_\star$., Comment: 29 pages, 22 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ
