Abstract

Abstract: The magnetoresistance, magnetization, and microstructure of granular composites with the general formula (Fe40Co40B20)x(Al2O3)100−x were studied for contents of the amorphous metallic component both above and below the percolation threshold (x≈43). The low-temperature transverse magnetoresistance of the composites is negative at x=41 and practically zero for x=49. For metal contents below the percolation threshold (x=31), a noticeable (7–8%) positive magnetoresistance, reached in magnetic fields of about 17 kOe, was observed. Possible mechanisms of the generation of inverse (positive) magnetoresistance are discussed.

It is shown that the transport process of KH2PO4 molecules during the fractal aggregate formation is the superdiffusion process and it is caused by hierarchicity of fractal structure and by stochasticity of transport processes

Abstract

International audience; The VO-Paris Data Centre (VO-PDC) is a new data centre that gathers ten laboratories in the Paris area (GEPI, IAP, IMCCE, LATMOS, LERMA, LESIA, LPMAA, LUTH, SYRTE, USN). It is specialized in the development of Virtual Observatory services. The objective of this federation is to build a sustainable infrastructure to offer high quality diffusion services to the community. It gives also the opportunity to promote exchanges and to share expertise on the development of VO services between scientists and computer engineers. VO-PDC is a multidisciplinary data center. Its main axes are atomic and molecular physics, VO-Theory, planetology and solar physics. It also develops several services concerning the diffusion of traditional astronomical data, catalogues, as well as geodesy services.

Methods: We genotyped 475 patients with varicose veins, 168 individual without chronic venous disease, and the population-based group of 896 subjects. Association was studied using logistic regression analysis adopting co-dominant, additive, recessive, and dominant models of inheritance. Results: None of the polymorphisms showed a statistically significant association with the risk of varicose veins. Conclusions: Our results provide evidence that the studied polymorphisms do not contribute to genetic susceptibility to varicose veins in ethnical Russians.

Methods: Allele, genotype, and haplotype frequencies were determined in the sample of 474 patients with primary varicose veins and in the control group of 478 individuals without a history of chronic venous disease. Results: Polymorphisms rs7189489, rs4633732, and rs1035550 showed the association with the increased risk of varicose veins, but none of the observed associations remained significant after correction for multiple testing. Haplotype analysis revealed the association of haplotype rs7189489 C–rs4633732 T–rs34221221 C–rs1035550 C–rs34152738 T–rs12711457 G with the increased risk of varicose veins (OR = 2.67, P = 0.01). Conclusions: Our results provide evidence that the studied polymorphisms do not play a major role in susceptibility to varicose veins development in the Russian population.

Abstract

Abstract: Macroscopic fractal aggregates of KH2PH4 (KDP) measuring up to 500 m have been obtained. The fractal structure forms as a result of the precipitation of KDP particles from a supersaturated aqueous solution in the presence of a temperature gradient followed by a diffusioncontrolled mechanism of aggregation. The electron-microscopic analysis performed has shown that the fractals are formed predominantly from crystallites of the tetragonal modification measuring ∼1 m. The dielectric constant (ɛ) of fractal KH2PO4 has been measured in the temperature range 80–300 K. A characteristic anomaly has been discovered on the ɛ(T) curve in the vicinity of 122 K, which attests to a ferroelectric phase transition. The absolute value of ɛ is significantly smaller than the components ɛ 11 and ɛ 33 for KH2PO4.

Abstract

Abstract: We have observed that carbon deposits obtained by atomizing graphite in an electric arc in an atmosphere of argon and helium exhibit porosity and possess fractal structure. The results of measurements of the internal friction Q −1 and the effective Young’s modulus E as a function of temperature are presented. Data on the resistivity, density, and microhardness of the carbon deposits are presented. A possible mechanism for formation of fractal structures in carbon deposits is discussed.

Several years ago a series of powerful millisecond radio bursts with close dispersion measures was detected toward the galaxy M31. Taking the hypothesis about the possible association of these radio bursts with a magnetar in M31 as a starting point, we have searched for periodic X-ray signal sources using data from the XMM-Newton X-ray telescope. As a result of our data analysis, we have identified a signal from the already known periodic X-ray source 3XMM J004301.4+413017, an accreting pulsar in a binary system. However, we have failed to detect new candidates. In particular, we have revealed no object that could be associated with the hypothetical magnetar responsible for the observed radio bursts that could have a luminosity erg s . Abstract

Experimental data on the self-organization of massive fractal granules with a total volume of up to 1.1 cm3 consisting of carbon nanofibers with transverse dimensions within 50–70 nm and a length of up to 1000 nm are presented. The fractal granules have a density of 1.3 g/cm3, an elastic modulus of 37.4 MPa, and a fractal dimension of D = 2.95. The resistivity of this material is about three orders of magnitude greater than the values typical of pyrolytic graphite. The surface layers in the fractal granule are characterized by a Seebeck coefficient of about S ∼ 24 μV/K, whereas the bulk regions have S ∼ 11 μV/K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
