This work deals with a study of asymmetric melting in a vertical stainless steel pipe. The pipe is filled with a phase change material and heated asymmetrically by a resistive heater attached to a part of its circumference along its entire height. The pipe is exposed to natural or forced convection external conditions. The experimental results include melt fraction that gives an accurate quantitative measure of the melting progress, obtained by measurements of the solid shape at different times. Also, infrared measurements of the outer surface of the pipe are presented. The experimental results constitute a reliable reference to a three-dimensional numerical model built using a commercial software. The modeling of system geometry and boundary conditions is explained. The numerical results include solid shapes during melting, temperature distribution, melt fraction and fluid velocity distribution. In a qualitative comparison of solid shapes, the experimental and numerical findings are in good agreement. The numerical results reveal details of the flow and heat transfer during melting.

Phase change materials have the potential for use in high-density thermal energy storage. However, their low thermal conductivity and the need for shape stabilization restrict their performances and implementation in various fields. The inclusion of thermally conductive nanomaterial as a single or hybrid filling is expected to form 3D network that enhances the thermal performances of phase change materials. The encapsulation of the colloidal composites in a polymer matrix stabilizes the phase change material.A paraffin matrix was loaded with carbon-based fillers of various dimensionalities, namely, 1D-carbon nanotubes, 2D-graphene nanoplatelets, and 3D-graphite flakes. The thermal conductivity of the colloidal composite was measured by transient plane source and the latent heat capacity by differential scanning calorimetry techniques. Modeling the thermal conductivity by the effective medium approach predicts the experimental results.The thermal conductivity of the phase change material loaded with fillers is enhanced from 0.2 to 11 W (m K)

Rotating flows with free-surface vortices can be found in many engineering applications, such as pump and turbine intakes, vessels, and nuclear reactors. The need to address rather different flow regions existing in such flows, such as Ekman and Stewartson layers and the line vortex zone, in a coupled manner, makes modeling of free-surface rotating flows very challenging. In this work, the flow field of a free-surface vortex, created in a rotating cylinder with a drain hole in its bottom, is investigated numerically and analytically. Above the drain hole of the cylinder, a free-surface vortex, accompanied by axial velocity, is created. This axial velocity profile is governed by the Ekman boundary layer far from the axis and by the drainage in its proximity. The experiments of Andersen et al. [“Anatomy of a bathtub vortex,” Phys. Rev. Lett. 91(10), 104502 (2003a); “The bathtub vortex in a rotating container,” J. Fluid Mech. 556, 121–146 (2006)] on the so-called bathtub vortex are numerically modeled with the finite volume method. The simulations are validated with the available measurements from the experiments. Using the simulation results, self-similar and non-self-similar models, describing the velocity fields in the Ekman boundary layer, are compared and tested. It is shown that the self-similar model is more accurate than the non-self-similar model. It is also demonstrated that the analytical model of Andersen et al. [“Anatomy of a bathtub vortex,” Phys. Rev. Lett. 91(10), 104502 (2003a); “The bathtub vortex in a rotating container,” J. Fluid Mech. 556, 121–146 (2006)], when modified as suggested in the present study, is capable of predicting the free-surface profile for low rotation rates. However, for high rotation rates, only the numerical simulation can predict the relation between the flow field within the liquid and the free-surface profile.

We investigate the presence of spin- and planar-squeezing in generalized superpositions of atomic (or spin) coherent states. Spin-squeezing has been shown to be a useful tool in determining the presence of entanglement in multipartite systems, such as collections of two-level atoms, as well as being an indication of reduced projection noise and sub-shot-noise-limited phase uncertainty in Ramsey spectroscopy, suitable for measuring phases ϕ ∼ 0 . On the other hand, planar-squeezed states display reduced projection noise in two directions simultaneously and have been shown to lead to enhanced metrological precision in measuring phases without the need for explicit prior knowledge of the phase value. In this paper, we show that the generalized superposition state can be parametrized to display both spin-squeezing along all orthogonal axes and planar-squeezing along all orthogonal planes for all values of J > 1 / 2 . We close with an application of the maximally spin- and planar-squeezed states to quantum metrology.
