We summarize recent progress in ultrafast Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor development and the application of neural networks for post-processing of CMOS and charge-coupled device (CCD) image data to achieve sub-pixel resolution (thus $super$-$resolution$). Generating wind power scenarios is very important for studying the impacts of multiple wind farms that are interconnected to the grid. We develop a graph convolutional generative adversarial network (GCGAN) approach by leveraging GAN's capability in generating large number of realistic scenarios without using statistical modeling. Unlike existing GAN-based wind power data generation approaches, we design GAN's hidden layers to match the underlying spatial and temporal characteristics. We advocate the use of graph filters to embed the spatial correlation among multiple wind farms, and a one-dimensional (1D) convolutional layer to represent the temporal feature filters. The proposed graph and feature filter design significantly reduce the GAN model complexity, leading to improvements in training efficiency and computation complexity. Numerical results using real wind power data from Australia demonstrate that the scenarios generated by the proposed GCGAN exhibit more realistic spatial and temporal statistics than other GAN-based outputs.

Although augmentations (e.g., perturbation of graph edges, image crops) boost the efficiency of Contrastive Learning (CL), feature level augmentation is another plausible, complementary yet not well researched strategy. Thus, we present a novel spectral feature argumentation for contrastive learning on graphs (and images). To this end, for each data view, we estimate a low-rank approximation per feature map and subtract that approximation from the map to obtain its complement. This is achieved by the proposed herein incomplete power iteration, a non-standard power iteration regime which enjoys two valuable byproducts (under mere one or two iterations): (i) it partially balances spectrum of the feature map, and (ii) it injects the noise into rebalanced singular values of the feature map (spectral augmentation). For two views, we align these rebalanced feature maps as such an improved alignment step can focus more on less dominant singular values of matrices of both views, whereas the spectral augmentation does not affect the spectral angle alignment (singular vectors are not perturbed). We derive the analytical form for: (i) the incomplete power iteration to capture its spectrum-balancing effect, and (ii) the variance of singular values augmented implicitly by the noise. We also show that the spectral augmentation improves the generalization bound. Implicit neural representation (INR) characterizes the attributes of a signal as a function of corresponding coordinates which emerges as a sharp weapon for solving inverse problems. However, the capacity of INR is limited by the spectral bias in the network training. In this paper, we find that such a frequency-related problem could be largely solved by re-arranging the coordinates of the input signal, for which we propose the disorder-invariant implicit neural representation (DINER) by augmenting a hash-table to a traditional INR backbone. Given discrete signals sharing the same histogram of attributes and different arrangement orders, the hash-table could project the coordinates into the same distribution for which the mapped signal can be better modeled using the subsequent INR network, leading to significantly alleviated spectral bias. Experiments not only reveal the generalization of the DINER for different INR backbones (MLP vs. SIREN) and various tasks (image/video representation, phase retrieval, and refractive index recovery) but also show the superiority over the state-of-the-art algorithms both in quality and speed., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Smart contracts are pieces of code that reside inside the blockchains and can be triggered to execute any transaction when specifically predefined conditions are satisfied. Being commonly used for commercial transactions in blockchain makes the security of smart contracts particularly important. Over the last few years, we have seen a great deal of academic and practical interest in detecting and fixing the bugs in smart contracts written by Solidity. But little is known about the real bug fixes in Solidity smart contract projects. To understand the bug fixes and enrich the knowledge of bug fixes in real-world projects, we conduct an empirical study on historical bug fixes from 46 real-world Solidity smart contract projects in this paper. We provide a multi-faceted discussion and mainly explore the following four questions: File Type and Amount, Fix Complexity, Bug distribution, and Fix Patches. We distill four findings during the process to explore these four questions. Finally, based on these findings, we provide actionable implications to improve the current approaches to fixing bugs in Solidity smart contracts from three aspects: Automatic repair techniques, Analysis tools, and Solidity developers., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures. Embodied dialogue instruction following requires an agent to complete a complex sequence of tasks from a natural language exchange. The recent introduction of benchmarks (Padmakumar et al., 2022) raises the question of how best to train and evaluate models for this multi-turn, multi-agent, long-horizon task. This paper contributes to that conversation, by arguing that imitation learning (IL) and related low-level metrics are actually misleading and do not align with the goals of embodied dialogue research and may hinder progress. We provide empirical comparisons of metrics, analysis of three models, and make suggestions for how the field might best progress. First, we observe that models trained with IL take spurious actions during evaluation. Second, we find that existing models fail to ground query utterances, which are essential for task completion. Load frequency control (LFC) is a key factor to maintain the stable frequency in multi-area power systems. As the modern power systems evolve from centralized to distributed paradigm, LFC needs to consider the peer-to-peer (P2P) based scheme that considers limited information from the information-exchange graph for the generator control of each interconnected area. This paper aims to solve a data-driven constrained LQR problem with mean-variance risk constraints and output structured feedback, and applies this framework to solve the LFC problem in multi-area power systems. By reformulating the constrained optimization problem into a minimax problem, the stochastic gradient descent max-oracle (SGDmax) algorithm with zero-order policy gradient (ZOPG) is adopted to find the optimal feedback gain from the learning, while guaranteeing convergence. In addition, to improve the adaptation of the proposed learning method to new or varying models, we construct an emulator grid that approximates the dynamics of a physical grid and performs training based on this model. Once the feedback gain is obtained from the emulator grid, it is applied to the physical grid with a robustness test to check whether the controller from the approximated emulator applies to the actual system. Numerical tests show that the obtained feedback controller can successfully control the frequency of each area, while mitigating the uncertainty from the loads, with reliable robustness that ensures the adaptability of the obtained feedback gain to the actual physical grid.

Wide-area dynamic studies are of paramount importance to ensure the stability and reliability of power grids. This paper puts forth a comprehensive framework for inferring the dynamic responses in the small-signal regime using ubiquitous fast-rate ambient data collected during normal grid operations. We have shown that the impulse response between any pair of locations can be recovered in a model-free fashion by cross-correlating angle and power flow data streams collected only at these two locations, going beyond previous work based on frequency data only. The result has been established via model-based analysis of linearized second-order swing dynamics under certain conditions. Numerical validations demonstrate its applicability to realistic power system models including nonlinear, higher-order dynamics. In some quantum many particle systems, the fermions could form Cooper pairs by exchanging intermediate bosons. This then drives a superconducting phase transition or a superfluid transition. Such transitions should be theoretically investigated by using proper non-perturbative methods. Here we take the neutron superfluid transition as an example and study the Cooper pairing of neutrons mediated by neutral $\pi$-mesons in the low density region of a neutron matter. We perform a non-perturbative analysis of the neutron-meson coupling and compute the pairing gap $\Delta$, the critical density $\rho_{c}$, and the critical temperature $T_c$ by solving the Dyson-Schwinger equation of the neutron propagator. We first carry out calculations under the widely used bare vertex approximation and then incorporate the contribution of the lowest-order vertex correction. This vertex correction is not negligible even at low densities and its importance is further enhanced as the density increases. The transition critical line on density-temperature plane obtained under the bare vertex approximation is substantially changed after including the vertex correction. These results indicate that the vertex corrections play a significant role and need to be seriously taken into account., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures

In the past two decades, quantum key distribution networks based on telecom fibers have been implemented on metropolitan and intercity scales. One of the bottlenecks lies in the exponential decay of the key rate with respect to the transmission distance. Recently proposed schemes mainly focus on achieving longer distances by creating a long-arm single-photon interferometer over two communication parties. Despite their advantageous performance over long communication distances, the requirement of phase-locking between two independent lasers is technically challenging. By adopting the recently-proposed mode-pairing idea, we realize high-performance quantum key distribution without global phase-locking. Using two independent off-the-shelf lasers, we show a quadratic key-rate improvement over the conventional measurement-device-independent schemes in the regime of metropolitan and intercity distances. For longer distances, we also boost the key rate performance by three orders of magnitude via 304 km commercial fiber and 407 km ultra-low-loss fiber. Large-scale datasets have played indispensable roles in the recent success of face generation/editing and significantly facilitated the advances of emerging research fields. However, the academic community still lacks a video dataset with diverse facial attribute annotations, which is crucial for the research on face-related videos. In this work, we propose a large-scale, high-quality, and diverse video dataset with rich facial attribute annotations, named the High-Quality Celebrity Video Dataset (CelebV-HQ). CelebV-HQ contains 35,666 video clips with the resolution of 512x512 at least, involving 15,653 identities. All clips are labeled manually with 83 facial attributes, covering appearance, action, and emotion. We conduct a comprehensive analysis in terms of age, ethnicity, brightness stability, motion smoothness, head pose diversity, and data quality to demonstrate the diversity and temporal coherence of CelebV-HQ. Besides, its versatility and potential are validated on two representative tasks, i.e., unconditional video generation and video facial attribute editing. Furthermore, we envision the future potential of CelebV-HQ, as well as the new opportunities and challenges it would bring to related research directions. The bone age, reflecting the degree of development of the bones, can be used to predict the adult height and detect endocrine diseases of children. Both examinations of radiologists and variability of operators have a significant impact on bone age assessment. To decrease human intervention , machine learning algorithms are used to assess the bone age automatically. However, conventional supervised deep-learning methods need pre-labeled data. In this paper, based on the convolutional auto-encoder with constraints (CCAE), an unsupervised deep-learning model proposed in the classification of the fingerprint, we propose this model for the classification of the bone age and baptize it BA-CCAE. In the proposed BA-CCAE model, the key regions of the raw X-ray images of the bone age are encoded, yielding the latent vectors. The K-means clustering algorithm is used to obtain the final classifications by grouping the latent vectors of the bone images. A set of experiments on the Radiological Society of North America pediatric bone age dataset (RSNA) show that the accuracy of classifications at 48-month intervals is 76.15%. Although the accuracy now is lower than most of the existing supervised models, the proposed BA-CCAE model can establish the classification of bone age without any pre-labeled data, and to the best of our knowledge, the proposed BA-CCAE is one of the few trails using the unsupervised deep-learning method for the bone age assessment.

Graph contrastive learning (GCL) improves graph representation learning, leading to SOTA on various downstream tasks. The graph augmentation step is a vital but scarcely studied step of GCL. In this paper, we show that the node embedding obtained via the graph augmentations is highly biased, somewhat limiting contrastive models from learning discriminative features for downstream tasks. Thus, instead of investigating graph augmentation in the input space, we alternatively propose to perform augmentations on the hidden features (feature augmentation). Inspired by so-called matrix sketching, we propose COSTA, a novel COvariance-preServing feaTure space Augmentation framework for GCL, which generates augmented features by maintaining a "good sketch" of original features. To highlight the superiority of feature augmentation with COSTA, we investigate a single-view setting (in addition to multi-view one) which conserves memory and computations. Solving the optimal power flow (OPF) problem is a fundamental task to ensure the system efficiency and reliability in real-time electricity grid operations. We develop a new topology-informed graph neural network (GNN) approach for predicting the optimal solutions of real-time ac-OPF problem. To incorporate grid topology to the NN model, the proposed GNN-for-OPF framework innovatively exploits the locality property of locational marginal prices and voltage magnitude. Furthermore, we develop a physics-aware (ac-)flow feasibility regularization approach for general OPF learning. The advantages of our proposed designs include reduced model complexity, improved generalizability and feasibility guarantees. By providing the analytical understanding on the graph subspace stability under grid topology contingency, we show the proposed GNN can quickly adapt to varying grid topology by an efficient re-training strategy. Numerical tests on various test systems of different sizes have validated the prediction accuracy, improved flow feasibility, and topology adaptivity capability of our proposed GNN-based learning framework.

Existing face swap methods rely heavily on large-scale networks for adequate capacity to generate visually plausible results, which inhibits its applications on resource-constraint platforms. In this work, we propose MobileFSGAN, a novel lightweight GAN for face swap that can run on mobile devices with much fewer parameters while achieving competitive performance. A lightweight encoder-decoder structure is designed especially for image synthesis tasks, which is only 10.2MB and can run on mobile devices at a real-time speed. To tackle the unstability of training such a small network, we construct the FSTriplets dataset utilizing facial attribute editing techniques. FSTriplets provides source-target-result training triplets, yielding pixel-level labels thus for the first time making the training process supervised. We also designed multi-scale gradient losses for efficient back-propagation, resulting in faster and better convergence. Experimental results show that our model reaches comparable performance towards state-of-the-art methods, while significantly reducing the number of network parameters. We develop a model-free learning algorithm for the infinite-horizon linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problem. Specifically, (risk) constraints and structured feedback are considered, in order to reduce the state deviation while allowing for a sparse communication graph in practice. By reformulating the dual problem as a nonconvex-concave minimax problem, we adopt the gradient descent max-oracle (GDmax), and for modelfree setting, the stochastic (S)GDmax using zero-order policy gradient. By bounding the Lipschitz and smoothness constants of the LQR cost using specifically defined sublevel sets, we can design the stepsize and related parameters to establish convergence to a stationary point (at a high probability). Numerical tests in a networked microgrid control problem have validated the convergence of our proposed SGDmax algorithm while demonstrating the effectiveness of risk constraints. The SGDmax algorithm has attained a satisfactory optimality gap compared to the classical LQR control, especially for the full feedback case.

Existing light field representations, such as epipolar plane image (EPI) and sub-aperture images, do not consider the structural characteristics across the views, so they usually require additional disparity and spatial structure cues for follow-up tasks. Besides, they have difficulties dealing with occlusions or larger disparity scenes. To this end, this paper proposes a novel Epipolar Focus Spectrum (EFS) representation by rearranging the EPI spectrum. Different from the classical EPI representation where an EPI line corresponds to a specific depth, there is a one-to-one mapping from the EFS line to the view. Accordingly, compared to a sparsely-sampled light field, a densely-sampled one with the same field of view (FoV) leads to a more compact distribution of such linear structures in the double-cone-shaped region with the identical opening angle in its corresponding EFS. Hence the EFS representation is invariant to the scene depth. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we develop a trainable EFS-based pipeline for light field reconstruction, where a dense light field can be reconstructed by compensating the "missing EFS lines" given a sparse light field, yielding promising results with cross-view consistency, especially in the presence of severe occlusion and large disparity. A key challenge in metabolomics is annotating measured spectra from a biological sample with chemical identities. Currently, only a small fraction of measurements can be assigned identities. Two complementary computational approaches have emerged to address the annotation problem: mapping candidate molecules to spectra, and mapping query spectra to molecular candidates. In essence, the candidate molecule with the spectrum that best explains the query spectrum is recommended as the target molecule. Despite candidate ranking being fundamental in both approaches, no prior works utilized rank learning tasks in determining the target molecule. We propose a novel machine learning model, Ensemble Spectral Prediction (ESP), for metabolite annotation. ESP takes advantage of prior neural network-based annotation models that utilize multilayer perceptron (MLP) networks and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). Based on the ranking results of the MLP and GNN-based models, ESP learns a weighting for the outputs of MLP and GNN spectral predictors to generate a spectral prediction for a query molecule. Importantly, training data is stratified by molecular formula to provide candidate sets during model training. Further, baseline MLP and GNN models are enhanced by considering peak dependencies through multi-head attention mechanism and multi-tasking on spectral topic distributions. ESP improves average rank by 41% and 30% over the MLP and GNN baselines, respectively, demonstrating remarkable performance gain over state-of-the-art neural network approaches. We show that annotation performance, for ESP and other models, is a strong function of the number of molecules in the candidate set and their similarity to the target molecule.

In this article, we propose a sparse spectra graph convolutional network (SSGCNet) for solving Epileptic EEG signal classification problems. The aim is to achieve a lightweight deep learning model without losing model classification accuracy. We propose a weighted neighborhood field graph (WNFG) to represent EEG signals, which reduces the redundant edges between graph nodes. WNFG has lower time complexity and memory usage than the conventional solutions. Using the graph representation, the sequential graph convolutional network is based on a combination of sparse weight pruning technique and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Our approach can reduce computation complexity without effect on classification accuracy. We also present convergence results for the proposed approach. The performance of the approach is illustrated in public and clinical-real datasets. Compared with the existing literature, our WNFG of EEG signals achieves up to 10 times of redundant edge reduction, and our approach achieves up to 97 times of model pruning without loss of classification accuracy., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved remarkable success by extending traditional convolution to learning on non-Euclidean data. The key to the GNNs is adopting the neural message-passing paradigm with two stages: aggregation and update. The current design of GNNs considers the topology information in the aggregation stage. However, in the updating stage, all nodes share the same updating function. The identical updating function treats each node embedding as i.i.d. random variables and thus ignores the implicit relationships between neighborhoods, which limits the capacity of the GNNs. The updating function is usually implemented with a linear transformation followed by a non-linear activation function. To make the updating function topology-aware, we inject the topological information into the non-linear activation function and propose Graph-adaptive Rectified Linear Unit (GReLU), which is a new parametric activation function incorporating the neighborhood information in a novel and efficient way. The parameters of GReLU are obtained from a hyperfunction based on both node features and the corresponding adjacent matrix. To reduce the risk of overfitting and the computational cost, we decompose the hyperfunction as two independent components for nodes and features respectively. In this paper, we study stationary structures near the planar Couette flow in Sobolev spaces on a channel $\mathbb{T}\times[-1,1]$, and asymptotic behavior of Couette flow in Gevrey spaces on $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}$ for the $\beta$-plane equation. Let $T>0$ be the horizontal period of the channel and $\alpha={2\pi\over T}$ be the wave number. We obtain a sharp region $O$ in the whole $(\alpha,\beta)$ half-plane such that non-parallel steadily traveling waves do not exist for $(\alpha,\beta)\in O$ and such traveling waves exist for $(\alpha,\beta)$ in the remaining regions, near Couette flow for $H^{\geq5}$ velocity perturbation. The borderlines between the region $O$ and its remaining are determined by two curves of the principal eigenvalues of singular Rayleigh-Kuo operators. Our results reveal that there exists $\beta_*>0$ such that if $|\beta|\leq \beta_*$, then non-parallel traveling waves do not exist for any $T>0$, while if $|\beta|>\beta_*$, then there exists a critical period $T_\beta>0$ so that such traveling waves exist for $T\in \left[T_\beta,\infty\right)$ and do not exist for $T\in \left(0,T_\beta\right)$, near Couette flow for $H^{\geq5}$ velocity perturbation. This contrasting dynamics plays an important role in studying the long time dynamics near Couette flow with Coriolis effects. Moreover, for any $\beta\neq0$ and $T>0$, there exist no non-parallel traveling waves with speeds converging in $(-1,1)$ near Couette flow for $H^{\geq5}$ velocity perturbation, in contrast to this, we construct non-shear stationary solutions near Couette flow for $H^{<{5\over2}}$ velocity perturbation, which is a generalization of Theorem 1 in [22] but the construction is more difficult due to the $\beta$'s term.
