In order to explore the scavenging ability of free radicals in polymers and the derivation mechanism with the different influence of the composition and various structure of nanomaterials, two-dimensional graphene oxide, one-dimensional carbon nanotubes and zero-dimensional carbon black in carbon nanomaterials, and halloysite nanotubes in silicate nanomaterials were selected to carry out a task. The results manifest that the content of free radicals produced by γ-ray irradiation in epoxy resin reduced because of the introduction nanoparticle. Among them, the epoxy resin reinforced by graphene oxide has the least free radical, followed by carbon nanotubes, halloysite nanotubes and carbon black, respectively. The analysis shows that the free radical scavenging capability was significantly different in variety types of nanomaterials. The free radical scavenging ability of carbon nanomaterials is ascribed to its well-organized honeycomb lattice, which is different from the fact that silicate nanomaterials is attributed to its electron acceptor sites. Meanwhile, the stable electron cloud was formed in the carbon nanomaterials, which is more conducive to eliminate the free radicals. The addition of nanomaterials decreases the number of free radicals in the resin, and correspondingly weakens the damage of free radicals for the resin, resulting in improving the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the epoxy resin.

Soil enzyme activities play a pivotal role in ecosystem processes, such as organic carbon decomposition or nitrogen and phosphorus mineralization. Thus, enzyme activities measurements can provide insights into the rates of ecosystem-level processes in peatlands. Hummock-hollow microtopography is a common feature in boreal peatlands, but its influence on soil enzyme activity is not well understood. We investigated the effects of hummock-hollow microtopography on activities of three soil hydrolases (β-1,4-glucosidase (βG), 4-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG), and acid phosphatase (AP)) and one oxidase (peroxidase (PER)), as well as environmental variables in a sedge-dominated peatland in Changbai Mountains, in northeast China. We found that soil enzyme activities had large microtopographical and seasonal heterogeneity. During the growing season, the activities of three soil hydrolases (βG, NAG and AP) in hummocks were 6.6, 4.6 and 5.5 times higher than those in hollows, while the PER activity in hollows was 1.9 times higher than in hummocks. Soil enzyme activities in hummocks exhibited obvious seasonal variation, with the βG, AP and PER presenting minimum values in summer and peak values in spring and autumn. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that soil enzyme activity had larger microtopographical heterogeneity than seasonal variations. Water table position explained most variation (74.1%) in soil enzyme activity, followed by soil temperature (5.5%) and pH (3.1%) based on ordination analysis using RDA. We conclude that hummock-hollow microtopography creates heterogeneity in hydrologic conditions, soil temperature and nutrients, and thus influences soil enzyme activity involved in carbon and nutrient cycling in sedge-dominated peatlands. This information stresses the importance of hummock-hollow microtopography in regulating carbon and nutrient cycling in northern peatlands.

Aging has become a serious social problem in China. Traditional informal long-term care is hard to sustain because of the reduction in family size and elders’ children migration to big cities. The institution offering services for the disabled elders has been a tendency. There exists a strange phenomenon: some nursing homes are difficult to enter for most disabled elders, while the other ones must search for elders to maintain operation. Therefore, for the evaluation of nursing homes, two problems should be considered: (1) selecting suitable nursing homes for disabled elders; (2) obtaining the key factors influencing the selection of elders and helping nursing homes improve their services based on the key factors. First, we propose a new DEMATEL (Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) method for PLTSs to solve the second problem. Then, we present a novel PROMETHEE (Preference Ranking Organization Methods for Enrichment Evaluations) method to rank the alternatives and make a sensitivity analysis for criteria. Finally, we illustrate our proposed methods to an evaluation problem in Zhenjiang City by a case study. Based on the case study, we can obtain that our proposed methods are effective and practicable.

Research on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) starts from the earliest assumption that cells derived from the bone marrow have the ability to repair tissues. Several scientists have since documented the crucial role of bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) in processes such as embryonic bone and cartilage formation, adult fracture and tissue repair, and immunomodulatory activities in therapeutic applications. In addition to BM-MSCs, several sources of MSCs have been reported to possess tissue repair and immunoregulatory abilities, making them potential treatment options for many diseases. Therefore, the therapeutic potential of MSCs in various diseases including autoimmune conditions has been explored. In addition to an imbalance of T cell subsets in most patients with autoimmune diseases, they also exhibit complex disease manifestations, overlapping symptoms among diseases, and difficult treatment. MSCs can regulate T cell subsets to restore their immune homeostasis toward disease resolution in autoimmune conditions. This review summarizes the role of MSCs in relieving autoimmune diseases via the regulation of T cell phenotypes.

ObjectiveWe aim to estimate the total factor productivity and analyze factors related to the Chinese government's health care expenditure in each of its provinces after its implementation of new health care reform in the period after 2009.Materials and methodsWe use the Malmquist DEA model to measure efficiency and apply the Tobit regression to explore factors that influence the efficiency of government health care expenditure. Data are taken from the China statistics yearbook (2004-2020).ResultsWe find that the average TFP of China's 31 provincial health care expenditure was lower than 1 in the period 2009-2019. We note that the average TFP was much higher after new health care reform was implemented, and note this in the eastern, central and western regions. But per capita GDP, population density and new health care reform implementation are found to have a statistically significant impact on the technical efficiency of the provincial government's health care expenditure (PConclusionAlthough the implementation of the new medical reform has improved the efficiency of the government's health expenditure, it is remains low in 31 provinces in China. In addition, the government should consider per capita GDP, population density and other factors when coordinating the allocation of health care input.SignificanceThis study systematically analyzes the efficiency and influencing factors of the Chinese government's health expenditure after it introduced new health care reforms. The results show that China's new medical reform will help to improve the government's health expenditure. The Chinese government can continue to adhere to the new medical reform policy, and should pay attention to demographic and economic factors when implementing the policy.

A variant of somatic nuclear autoantigenic sperm protein (sNASP) was identified from the murine lupus susceptibility locus Sle2c1 by whole exome sequencing (WES). Previous studies have shown that mutant sNASP could synergize with the Faslpr mutation in exacerbating autoimmunity and aggravating end-organ inflammation. In the current study, the sNASP mutation was introduced into Sle1.Yaa mice to detect whether it has a synergistic effect with Sle1 or Yaa loci. As expected, compared with Sle1.Yaa mice, Sle1.Yaa.ΔsNASP mice showed enlarged lymph nodes, aggravated renal inflammation, and shortened survival time. The proportions of CD3+ T cells, activated CD19+CD86+ B cells, Th1 cells in the spleen and lymph nodes, and Th17 cells in lymph nodes in Sle1.Yaa.ΔsNASP mice were increased compared to those in Sle1.Yaa mice. The levels of IFN-γ and TNF-α in the serum of Sle1.Yaa.ΔsNASP mice were higher than those of Sle1.Yaa mice. The above results show that mutant sNASP can interact with different lupus susceptibility genes and promote the disease process of systemic lupus erythematosus.

Background: Side effects in psychotherapy are a common phenomenon, but due to insufficient understanding of the relevant predictors of side effects in psychotherapy, many psychotherapists or clinicians fail to identify and manage these side effects. The purpose of this study was to predict whether clients or patients would experience side effects in psychotherapy by machine learning and to analyze the related influencing factors.Methods: A self-compiled “Psychotherapy Side Effects Questionnaire (PSEQ)” was delivered online by a WeChat official account. Three hundred and seventy participants were included in the cross-sectional analysis. Psychotherapy outcomes were classified as participants with side effects and without side effects. A number of features were selected to distinguish participants with different psychotherapy outcomes. Six machine learning-based algorithms were then chosen and trained by our dataset to build outcome prediction classifiers.Results: Our study showed that: (1) the most common side effects were negative emotions in psychotherapy, such as anxiety, tension, sadness, and anger, etc. (24.6%, 91/370); (2) the mental state of the psychotherapist, as perceived by the participant during psychotherapy, was the most relevant feature to predict whether clients would experience side effects in psychotherapy; (3) a Random Forest-based machine learning classifier offered the best prediction performance of the psychotherapy outcomes, with an F1-score of 0.797 and an AUC value of 0.804. These numbers indicate a high prediction performance, which allowed our approach to be used in practice.Conclusions: Our Random Forest-based machine learning classifier could accurately predict the possible outcome of a client in psychotherapy. Our study sheds light on the influencing factors of the side effects of psychotherapy and could help psychotherapists better predict the outcomes of psychotherapy.

Introduction With population ageing the prevalence of multi-morbidity (the co-occurrence of two or more chronic medical conditions) is increasing. Objectives and Approach Our goal was to use data linkage to obtain clinically validated data on the incidence of a range of common chronic conditions developed by participants in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health (57,000 women) and hence to track the cumulative incidence of multi-morbidity over time. Results The major data sources differed for different conditions, e.g. the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme was important for identifying musculoskeletal conditions, whereas hospital admission data was crucial for identifying stroke. The most common combinations of conditions differed for women at different ages, e.g., mental health, musculoskeletal and respiratory conditions were most common for women born in 1989-95, whereas heart disease was a prominent part of multi-morbidity for women born in 1921-26. Among these older women about 50% had 3 or more chronic conditions in 2002 (when they were aged 76-81) and this increased to over 80% by 2015 (when they were 89-93). For comparison, among women born in 1973-78 fewer than 5% had 2 or more chronic conditions in 2002 (when they were aged 24-29) and this increased to about 15% in 2016 (when they were 38-43). Conclusion / Implications Record linkage from multiple data sources, repeated over a long time span, is a powerful method for studying the development of multi-morbidity patterns in cohorts.

Secondary electrons (SEs) of high-energy cosmic rays in high-altitude areas can cause irradiation damage to insulators. In this paper, the Monte Carlo method is utilized to analyze the energy loss of SEs irradiated by extensive air showers in insulators. We investigate the formation of electron–hole pairs in insulators, the influence on the insulation characteristics, and the physical mechanism of the process. The results show that the energy of the SEs is much greater than the energy of the electrons in the transmission line, which may pose a threat to the equipment of a power system, and the energy loss of the incident electrons in insulators with different energies shows different characteristics. When the electron energy is lower than 364 keV, displacement damage will not occur in the insulators, and the insulation characteristics will not change; when the electron energy is between 364 keV and 723 keV, electron–hole pairs are generated in insulators but without damage cascade, which will have little impact on the insulation characteristics; when the electron energy exceeds 723 keV, damage cascade will occur, along with many electron–hole pairs, and the insulator insulation characteristics will be greatly affected.

Background: An increasing incidence of pancreatic cancer has been observed worldwide over the last few decades. Previous reports suggested that hay fever, a common allergic disease, may function in pancreatic cancer. Data on hay fever as a risk or protective factor for pancreatic cancer was controversial in several case–control reports. So, we here did a meta-analysis on published studies to evaluate the association of hay fever and the risk of pancreatic cancer.Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed through public databases. The association between hay fever and pancreatic cancer was evaluated by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The Cochran's Q test and I2 index were used to evaluate heterogeneity.Results: We included 8 population-based case–control studies involving 10,454 participants from 1986 to 2014. A history of hay fever was associated with a decreased risk of pancreatic cancer (OR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.50–0.64, P < 0.00001) through fixed effect model.Conclusion: The result of our study suggested that hay fever may significantly decrease the risk of pancreatic cancer.

Cloud detection is an important step in the processing of optical satellite remote-sensing data. In recent years, deep learning methods have achieved excellent results in cloud detection tasks. However, most of the current models have difficulties to accurately classify similar objects (e.g., clouds and snow) and to accurately detect clouds that occupy a few pixels in an image. To solve these problems, a cloud-detection framework (Cloudformer) combining CNN and Transformer is being proposed to achieve high-precision cloud detection in optical remote-sensing images. The framework achieves accurate detection of thin and small clouds using a pyramidal structure encoder. It also achieves accurate classification of similar objects using a dual-path decoder structure of CNN and Transformer, reducing the rate of missed detections and false alarms. In addition, since the Transformer model lacks the perception of location information, an asynchronous position-encoding method is being proposed to enhance the position information of the data entering the Transformer module and to optimize the detection results. Cloudformer is experimented on two datasets, AIR-CD and 38-Cloud, and the results show that it has state-of-the-art performance.

It is important to distinguish between two common defects, fatigue cracks and reflective cracks, and determine their locations (the top and bottom) in the highway pavement because they require individually targeted treatment measures. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has the potential to detect cracks in the highway pavement due to the change of the electromagnetic properties of highway-pavement media, arising from the existences of cracks. By using a theoretical analysis and a numerical simulation, we compare the characteristics of corresponding radargrams, including the amplitude variation of diffracted waves with various models of presetting cracks inside the layered homogeneous media. For those fatigue cracks and reflective cracks extending to the road surface, the amplitude curves of direct ground wave can intuitively indicate the locations of the top of the cracks and qualitatively compare the width of these cracks. Furthermore, we find that the shape and pattern of diffraction hyperbolas of both types of cracks with bottoms at different locations are quite similar, but their amplitudes are significantly different. To be specific, for those cracks with the same width, the amplitude of diffracted waves generated by fatigue cracks is slightly higher than that generated by reflective cracks at the interface between the asphalt surface and the semi-rigid base layer. In contrast, the amplitude of the former is significantly lower than the latter at the interface between the semi-rigid base and the roadbed. We applied these findings to the interpretation of the field GPR data of a highway pavement in China, and successfully identified the locations of the cracks and corresponding types. Our model results and field results clearly show the efficiency of our findings in the detection of cracks for highway-pavement rehabilitation.

Objectives: Whether pre-operative biliary drainage (PBD) affects long-term survival of patients with obstructive jaundice with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy is still controversial. Most of the previous research did not include the important total serum bilirubin (TB) level before intervention as well as before surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of PBD on long-term survival after considering the TB level.Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from patients with obstructive jaundice who underwent resection of pancreatic head cancer in a high-volume center. X-Tile software and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were applied to determine the optimal cut-off levels for TB and age based on the minimal probability (P)-value and the largest χ2-value. Multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed after univariate analysis to assess independent prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS).Results: Of 426 patients with obstructive jaundice who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for resectable pancreatic head cancer during a 7 year period, 242 (56.8%) received PBD and 184 (43.2%) underwent surgery directly. The OS of patients who received PBD was significantly worse than that of patients who did not receive PBD by univariate analysis (median of 16.6 vs. 22.2 months, P = 0.048). After including liver function parameters in the multivariate Cox regression, we found that the use of PBD was not associated with OS or DFS, while TB before intervention >150 μmol/L was an independent adverse prognostic factor for both OS [hazard ratio (HR), 1.42; 95% CI, 1.05–1.91] and DFS (HR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.08–1.77).Conclusions: In patients with obstructive jaundice with resectable pancreatic head cancer, undergoing PBD before pancreaticoduodenectomy did not impair or benefit survival rates compared with surgery alone. However, TB before intervention >150 μmol/L predicted an unfavorable prognosis, irrespective of the PBD procedure.

Objectives: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) followed by lymphadenectomy is performed for patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) located in the head of the pancreas. Because the head of the pancreas could be divided into dorsal or ventral primordium in relation to embryonic development, the metastasis of lymph node (LN) may differ. In this retrospective study, we evaluated the impact of extended or standard LN dissection for PDAC located in ventral or dorsal primordia of the pancreatic head.Methods: From February 2016 to November 2018, 178 patients who underwent PD for PDAC were enrolled at the Pancreatic Disease Center, Ruijin Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. According to the tumor location and the range of LN dissection, all patients were divided into three groups: ventral primordium with extended lymphadenectomy (VE group), ventral primordium with standard lymphadenectomy (VS group), and dorsal primordium with extended lymphadenectomy (DE group). Clinical and pathological features were retrospectively analyzed as were the long-term survival outcomes.Results: More patients in the VE group were detected with metastasis in the lymph nodes around the superior mesenteric artery (LN14) than those in the DE group (LN along the right side of the superior mesenteric artery, LN14ab): 22.9 vs. 5.9%, p = 0.005; (LN along the left side of the superior mesenteric artery, LN14cd): 10.0 vs. 0.0%, p = 0.022. LN14 was involved in more patients in the VE group than in the VS group (22.9 vs. 5.0%, p = 0.015). For IIb-stage patients in the VE group, the overall survival time (18.3 vs. 9.3 months, p < 0.001) and disease-free survival time (12.2 vs. 5.1 months, p = 0.045) were longer in those with LN14cd (–) than those with LN14cd (+).Conclusion: This study suggested that patients with PDAC located in the ventral head of the pancreas had higher risk of LN14 involvement compared with those at dorsal. Thus, a thorough dissection of LN14 in PDAC located in the ventral head of the pancreas is recommended to optimize the regional extended lymphadenectomy.

Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic intestinal inflammation that is a risk factor for many gastrointestinal cancers. Exosomes are gradually gaining attention as an emerging treatment method for IBD due to their important biological characteristics. NF‐κB is an important pro‐inflammatory transcription factor kept inactive by IκB protein in the cytoplasm by masking the nuclear localization signal of NF‐κB. The deterioration of IκB is mainly ubiquitination, and this depends on neddylation. Methods In this study, we established a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)‐induced IBD model in BABL/C mice to evaluate the effect of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell‐derived exosomes (hucMSC‐exosomes, hucMSC‐Ex) on the repair of IBD. At the same time, human colorectal mucosa cells (FHC) were stimulated by LPS (lipopolysaccharide) in vitro to activate the inflammatory environment to study the mechanism of hucMSC‐Ex regulating neddylation. The microRNA (miRNA) obtained by sequencing and transfection with hucMSC‐Ex was used to verify the role of miR‐326/neddylation/IκB/NF‐κB signaling pathway in IBD repair. Results HucMSC‐Ex inhibited the process of neddylation in relieving DSS‐induced IBD in mice. The binding of NEDD8 (neural precursor cell‐expressed, developmentally downregulated gene 8) to cullin 1 and the activation of NF‐κB signaling pathway were suppressed along with reduced expression levels of neddylation‐related enzyme molecules. The same phenomenon was observed in FHC cells. The miRNA comparison results showed that miR‐326 was highly expressed in hucMSC‐Ex and played an important role in inhibiting the neddylation process. The therapeutic effect of hucMSC‐Ex with high expression of miR‐326 on IBD mice was significantly stronger than that of ordinary hucMSC‐Ex. Conclusions HucMSC‐Ex relieves DSS‐induced IBD in a mouse model by inhibiting neddylation through miR‐326.

BACKGROUND:Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease and its transmission is closely linked to climate. We aimed to review available information on the projection of dengue in the future under climate change scenarios. METHODS:Using five databases (PubMed, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Web of Science), a systematic review was conducted to retrieve all articles from database inception to 30th June 2019 which projected the future of dengue under climate change scenarios. In this review, "the future of dengue" refers to disease burden of dengue, epidemic potential of dengue cases, geographical distribution of dengue cases, and population exposed to climatically suitable areas of dengue. RESULTS:Sixteen studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria, and five of them projected a global dengue future. Most studies reported an increase in disease burden, a wider spatial distribution of dengue cases or more people exposed to climatically suitable areas of dengue as climate change proceeds. The years 1961-1990 and 2050 were the most commonly used baseline and projection periods, respectively. Multiple climate change scenarios introduced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), including B1, A1B, and A2, as well as Representative Concentration Pathway 2.6 (RCP2.6), RCP4.5, RCP6.0 and RCP8.5, were most widely employed. Instead of projecting the future number of dengue cases, there is a growing consensus on using "population exposed to climatically suitable areas for dengue" or "epidemic potential of dengue cases" as the outcome variable. Future studies exploring non-climatic drivers which determine the presence/absence of dengue vectors, and identifying the pivotal factors triggering the transmission of dengue in those climatically suitable areas would help yield a more accurate projection for dengue in the future. CONCLUSIONS:Projecting the future of dengue requires a systematic consideration of assumptions and uncertainties, which will facilitate the development of tailored climate change adaptation strategies to manage dengue.

BACKGROUND:Many studies have shown associations between rising temperatures, El Niño events and dengue incidence, but the effect of sustained periods of extreme high temperatures (i.e., heatwaves) on dengue outbreaks has not yet been investigated. This study aimed to compare the short-term temperature-dengue associations during different dengue outbreak periods, estimate the dengue cases attributable to temperature, and ascertain if there was an association between heatwaves and dengue outbreaks in Hanoi, Vietnam. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:Dengue outbreaks were assigned to one of three categories (small, medium and large) based on the 50th, 75th, and 90th percentiles of distribution of weekly dengue cases during 2008-2016. Using a generalised linear regression model with a negative binomial link that controlled for temporal trends, temperature variation, rainfall and population size over time, we examined and compared associations between weekly average temperature and weekly dengue incidence for different outbreak categories. The same model using weeks with or without heatwaves as binary variables was applied to examine the potential effects of extreme heatwaves, defined as seven or more days with temperatures above the 95th percentile of daily temperature distribution during the study period. This study included 55,801 dengue cases, with an average of 119 (range: 0 to 1454) cases per week. The exposure-response relationship between temperature and dengue risk was non-linear and differed with dengue category. After considering the delayed effects of temperature (one week lag), we estimated that 4.6%, 11.6%, and 21.9% of incident cases during small, medium, and large outbreaks were attributable to temperature. We found evidence of an association between heatwaves and dengue outbreaks, with longer delayed effects on large outbreaks (around 14 weeks later) than small and medium outbreaks (4 to 9 weeks later). In recent years, lots of multifactorial optimization evolutionary algorithms have been developed to optimize multiple tasks simultaneously, which improves the overall efficiency using implicit genetic complementarity between different tasks. In this paper, a novel multitask fireworks algorithm is proposed with novel transfer sparks to solve multitask optimization problems. For each task, some transfer sparks would be generated with adaptive length and promising direction vector, which are very helpful to transfer useful genetic information between different tasks. Finally, the proposed algorithm is compared against some chosen state-of-the-art evolutionary multitasking algorithms. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides better performance on several single objectives and multiobjective MTO test suites.

Objectives: The optimal number of the examined lymph nodes (ELNs) in pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma has been widely studied. However, the accuracy of nodal positivity for the patients with inadequate lymphadenectomy is still unclear. The purpose of our study was to determine the accuracy of the number of positive nodes reported for patients with 1–3 positive nodes and the probability that 4 or more nodes could be positive along with tumor size and number of nodes examined.Methods: We obtained data on patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma diagnosed during 2004–2013 from the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry. An mathematical model based on Hypergeometric Distribution and Bayes' Theorem was used to estimate the accuracy.Results: Among the 9,945 patients, 55.6% underwent inadequate lymphadenectomy. Of them, 1,842, 6,049, and 2,054 had T1, T2, and T3 stage disease, respectively. The accuracy of the number of observed positive nodes increased as the number of ELNs increased and the tumor size decreased. To rule out the possibility of N2 stage (4 and more positive nodes), there should be at least 13 ELNs for the patients with 1 observed positive lymph node and 14 for the patients with 2.Conclusion: Inadequate lymphadenectomy could result in underestimation of the N stage, and this would have adverse impact on recurrence, efficacy of postoperative treatment, and even overall survival. This model combined with the observed positive lymph nodes, the number of ELNs, and tumor size could provide a more accurate determination of nodal positivity of these patients.

Background: The diagnostic value of pleural effusion mononuclear cells count for tuberculous pleurisy (TBP) is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of pleural effusion mononuclear cells count and its combination with adenosine deaminase (ADA) in TBP patients.Methods: We initially analyzed 296 patients with unknown pleural effusion from the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Provincial People's Hospital during January 2014 to February 2018. Ultimately, 100 tuberculous pleurisy (TBP) patients and 105 non-tuberculous pleurisy (non-TBP) patients with pleural effusion were investigated in the current study. Meanwhile, pleural effusion mononuclear cells count and ADA test were performed to evaluate the diagnostic value for TBP. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), positive likelihood ratio (LR+), negative likelihood ratio (LR–), accuracy and area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) of pleural effusion mononuclear cells count only and its combination with ADA for TBP diagnosis were investigated.Results: (i) The best cut-off value of pleural effusion mononuclear cells count for TBP diagnosis was 969.6 × 106/L, with the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of 76, 57, and 66%, respectively. (ii) Combination of pleural effusion mononuclear cells count and ADA test suggested diagnostic value for TBP. Specifically, serial test showed the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy of 65, 90, 78%, respectively, whereas parallel test revealed the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy of 92, 45, 68%, respectively. The sensitivity of parallel test (92%) was significantly higher than pleural effusion mononuclear cells count alone (76%) (X2 = 23.19, p < 0.001). (iii) The area under the ROC of pleural effusion mononuclear cells count and it combined with ADA were 0.66 (95% CI, 0.59–0.72) and 0.83 (95% CI, 0.78–0.89), respectively, with statistically significant difference (Z = 3.46, p < 0.001).Conclusion: This retrospective case-control study demonstrated that pleural effusion mononuclear cells count is relatively useful for TBP diagnosis. Furthermore, the pleural effusion mononuclear cells count in combination with ADA can further improve the diagnostic accuracy of TBP.

Traditional Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches are designed to work well in static environments. In many real-world scenarios, the environments are complex and dynamic, in which the performance of traditional RL approaches may drastically degrade. One of the factors which results in the dynamicity and complexity of the environment is a change in the position and number of obstacles. This paper presents a path planning approach for autonomous mobile robots in a complex dynamic indoor environment, where the dynamic pattern of obstacles will not drastically affect the performance of RL models. Two independent modules, collision avoidance without considering the goal position and goal-seeking without considering obstacles avoidance, are trained independently using artificial neural networks and RL to obtain their best control policies. Then, a switching function is used to combine the two trained modules for realizing the obstacle avoidance and global path planning in a complex dynamic indoor environment. Furthermore, this control system is designed with a special focus on the computational and memory requirements of resource-constrained robots. The design was tested in a real-world environment on a mini-robot with constrained resources. Along with the static and dynamic obstacles' avoidance, this system has the ability to achieve both static and dynamic targets. This control system can also be used to train a robot in the real world using RL when the robot cannot afford to collide. Robot behavior in the real ground shows a very strong correlation with the simulation results.

Northeast China lies in the transition zone from the humid monsoonal to the arid continental climate, with diverse ecosystems and agricultural land highly susceptible to climate change. This region has experienced significant greening in the past three decades, but future trends remain uncertain. In this study, we provide a quantitative assessment of how vegetation, indicated by the leaf area index (LAI), will change in this region in response to future climate change. Based on the output of eleven CMIP6 global climates, Northeast China is likely to get warmer and wetter in the future, corresponding to an increase in regional LAI. Under the medium emissions scenario (SSP245), the average LAI is expected to increase by 0.27 for the mid-century (2041–2070) and 0.39 for the late century (2071–2100). Under the high emissions scenario (SSP585), the increase is 0.40 for the mid-century and 0.70 for the late century, respectively. Despite the increase in the regional mean, the LAI trend shows significant spatial heterogeneity, with likely decreases for the arid northwest and some sandy fields in this region. Therefore, climate change could pose additional challenges for long-term ecological and economic sustainability. Our findings could provide useful information to local decision makers for developing effective sustainable land management strategies in Northeast China.

(1) Background: Chronic inflammation has been regarded as a risk factor for the onset and progression of human cancer, but the critical molecular mechanisms underlying this pathological process have yet to be elucidated. (2) Methods: In this study, we investigated whether interleukin (IL)-17-mediated inflammation was involved in cigarette smoke-induced genomic instability. (3) Results: Higher levels of both IL-17 and the DNA damage response (DDR) were found in the lung tissues of smokers than in those of non-smokers. Similarly, elevated levels of IL-17 and the DDR were observed in mice after cigarette smoke exposure, and a positive correlation was observed between IL-17 expression and the DDR. In line with these observations, the DDR in the mouse lung was diminished in IL-17 KO when exposed to cigarette smoke. Besides this, the treatment of human bronchial epithelium cells with IL-17 led to increased levels of the DDR and chromosome breakage. (4) Conclusions: These results suggest that cigarette smoke induces genomic instability at least partially through IL-17-mediated inflammation, implying that IL-17 could play an important role in the development of lung cancer.

Abstract Sensitive detection of features in a nanostructure may sometimes be puzzled in the presence of significant background noise. In this regard, background suppression and super-resolution are substantively important for detecting weakly scattering nanoscale features. Here, we present a lens design, termed hyperbolic-polaritons-enabled dark-field lens (HPEDL), which has the ability to accomplish straightforward sensitive detection. This HPEDL structure consists of type I and type II hyperbolic media that support high-k field waves via hyperbolic polaritons (HPs). We show that the cone-like characteristics of the HPs could be manipulated while the influence of the low-k field waves would be removed. Numerical simulations demonstrate that this proposed structure can successfully realize straightforward sensitive detection by modifying its thickness under the phase compensation condition. Besides, the minimum resolvable length and angular-dependent performance for sensitive detection are also demonstrated by simulations. Remarkably, these findings are very promising for propelling nanophotonics technologies and constitute a further important step towards practical applications of optical microscopy.

Abstract Long segmental repair of trachea stenosis is an intractable condition in the clinic. The reconstruction of an artificial substitute by tissue engineering is a promising approach to solve this unmet clinical need. 3D printing technology provides an infinite possibility for engineering a trachea. Here, we 3D printed a biodegradable reticular polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold with similar morphology to the whole segment of rabbits’ native trachea. The 3D-printed scaffold was suspended in culture with chondrocytes for 2 (Group I) or 4 (Group II) weeks, respectively. This in vitro suspension produced a more successful reconstruction of a tissue-engineered trachea (TET), which enhanced the overall support function of the replaced tracheal segment. After implantation of the chondrocyte-treated scaffold into the subcutaneous tissue of nude mice, the TET presented properties of mature cartilage tissue. To further evaluate the feasibility of repairing whole segment tracheal defects, replacement surgery of rabbits’ native trachea by TET was performed. Following postoperative care, mean survival time in Group I was 14.38 ± 5.42 days, and in Group II was 22.58 ± 16.10 days, with the longest survival time being 10 weeks in Group II. In conclusion, we demonstrate the feasibility of repairing whole segment tracheal defects with 3D printed TET.

The Sle2c1rec1c (rec1c) sublocus is derived from the mouse lupus susceptibility 2 (Sle2) locus identified in the NZM2410 model. Our current study dissected the functional characters and the genetic basis of the rec1c locus relative to lupus when co-expressed with the Faslpr mutation, an established inducer of autoimmunity. The rec1c.lpr mice exhibited mild expansion of lymph nodes and had a normal T cell cellularity, but developed significantly kidney and lung inflammation, indicating that the rec1c amplifies lpr-induced autoimmune pathogenesis. A variant of somatic nuclear autoantigenic sperm protein (sNASP) was identified from the rec1c interval as a substitution of two consecutive amino acid residues in the histone-binding domain, resulting in an increased binding affinity to histone H4 and H3.1/H4 tetramer. To determine the role of the sNASP rec1c allele in mouse lupus, a novel strain was generated by introducing the rec1c mutations into the B6 genome. In this transgenic model, the sNASP allele synergized with the lpr mutation leading to moderate autoimmune phenotypes and aggravating inflammatory pathology alterations in kidney and lung that were similar to those observed in the rec1c.lpr mice. These results establish that the sNASP allele is a pathogenic genetic element in the rec1c sublocus, which not only promotes autoimmunity, but also exacerbates the inflammation reaction of end organs in mouse lupus pathogenesis. It also shows the complexity of the Sle2c locus, initially mapped as the major locus associated with B1a cell expansion. In addition to Cdkn2c, which regulates this expansion, we have now identified in the same locus a protective allele of Csf3r, a variant of Skint6 associated with T cell activation, and now a variant of sNASP that amplifies autoimmunity and tissue damage.

Background We occasionally noticed that native collateral blood flow showed a recessive trend in the early stages of acute myocardial infarction in rats, which greatly interferes with the accurate assessment of native collateral circulation levels. Here, we sought to recognize the coronary collateral circulation system in depth, especially the microcirculation part, on this basis. Methods and Results In this study, we detected native collateral flow with positron emission tomography perfusion imaging in rats and found that the native flow is relatively abundant when it is initially recruited. However, this flow is extremely unstable in the early stage of acute myocardial infarction and quickly fails. We used tracers to mark the collateral in an ischemic area and a massive preformed collateral network was labeled. The ultrastructures of these collateral microvessels are flawed, which contributes to extensive leakage and consequent interstitial edema in the ischemic region. Conclusions An unrecognized short‐lived native coronary collateral microcirculation reserve is widely distributed in rat hearts. Recession of collateral blood flow transported by coronary collateral microcirculation reserve contributes to instability of native collateral blood flow in the early stage of acute myocardial infarction. The immature structure determines that these microvessels are short‐lived and provide conditions for the development of early interstitial edema in acute myocardial infarction.

Hydraulic oil is the key medium for the normal operation of hydraulic machinery, which carries various wear debris. The information reflected by the wear debris can be used to predict the early failure of equipment and achieve predictive maintenance. In order to realize the real-time condition monitoring of hydraulic oil, an impedance debris sensor that can detect inductance and resistance parameters is designed and studied in this paper. The material and size of wear debris can be discriminated based on inductance-resistance detection method. Silicon steel strips and two rectangular channels are designed in the sensor. The silicon steel strips are used to enhance the magnetic field strength, and the double rectangular detection channels can make full use of the magnetic field distribution region, thereby improving the detection sensitivity and throughput of the sensor. The comparison experiment shows that the coils in series are more suitable for the monitoring of wear debris. By comparing and analyzing the direction and the presence or absence of the signal pulses, the debris sensor can detect and distinguish 46 µm iron particles and 110 µm copper particles. This impedance detection method provides a new technical support for the high-precision distinguishing measurement of metal debris. The sensor can not only be used for oil detection in the laboratory, but also can be made into portable oil detection device for machinery health monitoring.

Dust cycle is actively involved in the Earth’s climate and environmental systems. However, the spatiotemporal pattern and recent trend of dust emission from the drylands in East Asia remain unclear. By calculating dust aerosol optical depth (DOD) from the newly released moderate resolution imaging spectrometer aerosol products, we obtain a relatively long satellite-based time series of dust activity from 2001 to 2020 over China and Mongolia. We identify pronounced interannual variability of dust activity that is consistent with ground-based meteorological observations in the study area. A substantial reduction in spring dust activity in northern China is also found, which seems in accordance with the long-term weakening trend since the 1970s that has been attributed to the wind speed decline by previous studies. However, the spatial pattern of the trends in both annual mean and seasonal dust activity during the last 20 years is divergent, and the most significant dust diminishing is found over north-central China where large-scale vegetation restoration projects have been implemented. It indicates that in addition to the potential contribution of wind speed change, land-use change also plays an important role in the recent inhibition of dust emission. The current results show that dust activity occurs most intensively in spring, followed by summer and relatively weaker in autumn and winter. However, dust activity in autumn and winter has increased significantly in NW China despite the overall decreasing trend in other two seasons, probably associated with different seasonal atmospheric and land surface conditions. Finally, the DOD distribution reveals that the Tarim Basin, Gobi and Qaidam Basin Deserts are three major dust sources in East Asia. Compared to ground observations which are spatially limited and distributed unevenly, remote sensing provides an important complement, and it can serve as reference for identification of dust sources using other methods such as geochemical fingerprint and modeling.

This paper presents a new type of time domain CMOS temperature sensor with a 9b successive approximation register (SAR) control logic and a fine delay line. We adopted an N-type poly resistor as the sensing element for temperature linearity. The chip was implemented in a standard 0.18 m 1P6M bulk CMOS process with general VTH transistors and the active die area was 0.432 mm2. The temperature resolution was 0.49 °C and the temperature error was from −1.6 to +0.6 °C over the range of 0 to 100 °C after two-point calibration. The supply voltage sensitivity was 0.085 °C/mV. The conversion rate was 25kHz and the energy efficiency was 7.2 nJ/sample.

Active flutter suppression and subspace identification for a flexible wing model using micro fiber composite actuator were experimentally studied in a low speed wind tunnel. NACA0006 thin airfoil model was used for the experimental object to verify the performance of identification algorithm and designed controller. The equation of the fluid, vibration, and piezoelectric coupled motion was theoretically analyzed and experimentally identified under the open-loop and closed-loop condition by subspace method for controller design. A robust pole placement algorithm in terms of linear matrix inequality that accommodates the model uncertainty caused by identification deviation and flow speed variation was utilized to stabilize the divergent aeroelastic system. For further enlarging the flutter envelope, additional controllers were designed subject to the models beyond the flutter speed. Wind speed was measured online as the decision parameter of switching between the controllers. To ensure the stability of arbitrary switching, Common Lyapunov function method was applied to design the robust pole placement controllers for different models to ensure that the closed-loop system shared a common Lyapunov function. Wind tunnel result showed that the designed controllers could stabilize the time varying aeroelastic system over a wide range under arbitrary switching.

In this study, the structures of external costs are built in line with coal-fired and biomass power plant life cycle activities in Northeast China. The external cost of coal-fired and biomass power plants was compared, using the lifecycle approach. In addition, the external costs of a biomass power plant are calculated for each stage for comparison with those of a coal-fired power plant. The results highlight that the external costs of a coal-fired plant are 0.072 US $/kWh, which are much higher than that of a biomass power plant, 0.00012 US$/kWh. The external cost of coal-fired power generation is as much as 90% of the current price of electricity generated by coal, while the external cost of a biomass power plant is 1/1000 of the current price of electricity generated by biomass. In addition, for a biomass power plant, the external cost associated with SO2, NOX, and PM2.5 are particularly lower than those of a coal-fired power plant. The prospect of establishing precise estimations for external cost mechanisms and sustainable energy policies is discussed to show a possible direction for future energy schemes in China. The paper has significant value for supporting the biomass power industry and taxing or regulating coal-fired power industry to optimize the energy structure in China.

Objectives: Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) play an important role in postnatal neovascularization. The number and function of EPCs declines as part of aging-associated senescence, thereby potentially contributing to vascular pathologies. Here, we investigated the significance and molecular mechanisms of microRNA-22 (miR-22) governing EPC senescence. Methods: EPCs were isolated from human circulating mononuclear cells from healthy young and aged volunteers. Cell senescence, proliferation, migration and tube formation ability were detected by SA-β-gal staining assay, MTT assay, transwell assay and Matrigel-based angiogenesis assay. Gene and protein expression were analyzed by qRT-PCR and Western blot respectively. Results: We found that miR-22 was upregulated in aged EPCs. Overexpression of miR-22 in young EPCs induced cell senescence, decreased proliferation and migration, and impaired angiogenesis in vitro. Conversely, silencing of endogenous miR-22 led to decreased cell senescence, increased proliferation and migration, and improved angiogenesis. AKT3 was identified as a direct target of miR-22, and restoration of AKT3 expression attenuated the effects of miR-22 in young EPCs. Conclusion: Our results indicate that miR-22 induces EPC senescence by downregulating AKT3 expression, providing a potential novel target for the reversal of EPC dysfunction in angiogenesis.

Transient electronics are becoming a hot topic due to the rapid development of bioelectronics, self-destructive devices and environmental sensors. This letter reports a novel scheme for triggering degradation of 250 μm-thick Mg target using acetic acid regarding transient electronics applications. The triggered transience has also been demonstrated using commercial vinegar. To achieve programmable transience as well as device protection, polypropylene carbonate (PPC) was investigated as passivation layer. The proposed method has demonstrated simplicity, high safety, low cost and low trigger temperature.

Holograms show great potential in optical or acoustical waves applications due to their capability to reconstruct images. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to realize acoustic holograms based on an ultrathin metasurface with arbitrary phase control ability. Compared with the conventional imaging method, e.g., concave mirror, which has a bulky size and limited imaging effects, the acoustic metasurface comprises a single layer of Helmholtz-like elements that can largely reduce the complexity of production. With this ultrathin reflective metasurface, acoustic holograms are constructed through a subtle structure design for single and multiple focal imaging, while the potential thermoviscous effects are minimized. We further demonstrate that the metasurface has the capability of arbitrary phase control in a certain frequency range, where the reflected phase dispersion is linear. Our proposed ultrathin metasurface holograms would be very useful in numerous applications, such as acoustic sensing, medical imaging, and so on.

A multifunction detection sensor for hydraulic oil contaminants based on a microfluidic chip is proposed, which consists of double solenoid coils and a straight microchannel. The inductance detection model of metal particles and capacitance detection model of nonmetal particles are constructed theoretically. In order to further improve detection sensitivity, experiments of effects of silicon steel sheets on the sensitivity of detection are carried out. Experimental results show that the silicon steel sheets can significantly improve the detection sensitivity of metal particles. The inductance amplitude and signal-to-noise (SNR) of iron particles ranging from 60−130 μm and copper particles ranging from 120−180 μm can be increased by at least 7.0−2.4 and 4.5−2.0 times, respectively. We demonstrate the successful detection of 30 μm iron particles and 90 μm copper particles using double solenoid coils with silicon steel sheets. In capacitance detection experiments, the silicon steel sheets can improve the sensitivity of capacitance detection, but the improvement effect is not obvious. We demonstrate the successful detection of 140 μm water droplets and 240 μm bubbles using double solenoid coils with and without silicon steel sheets. The capacitance amplitude and SNR of detecting water droplets ranging from 140−150 μm and bubbles ranging from 240−250 μm can be increased by 37.4−21.9% and 18.5−8.0% using double solenoid coils with silicon steel sheets, respectively.

Recent years, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted increased attention from researchers worldwide. Owing to their conductivity and triboelectric characteristics, metal materials can be made as both triboelectric materials and conductive electrodes. However, the surface of typical metals (such as copper, aluminum, and iron) is likely to be corroded when the sweat generated by human-body movement drops on the surface of TENGs, as this corrosion is detrimental to the output performance of TENGs. In this work, we proposed a novel corrosion-resistant copper−nickel based TENG (CN-TENG). Copper−nickel alloy conductive tape and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape played the role of the triboelectric materials, and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was utilized as the supporting part. The conductive copper−nickel alloy tape also served as a conductive electrode. The open-circuit voltage (VOC) and short-circuit current (ISC) can arrive at 196.8 V and 6 μA, respectively. Furthermore, peak power density values of 45 μW/cm2 were realized for the CN-TENG. A series of experiments confirmed its corrosion-resistant property. The approximate value of VOC for the fabricated TENG integrated into the shoe reached 1500 V, which is capable of driving at least 172 high-power LEDs in series. The results of this research provide a workable method for supporting corrosion-resistant self-powered wearable electronics.

In order to realize the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments of a certain type of electric linear actuator in the laboratory, an electric linear load simulator (ELLS) based on LabVIEW+PXI platform was developed to simulate the external force of the actuator under actual working conditions. In structural design, the ball screw is used to convert the PMSM torque into linear force. In hardware design, the system is built using the upper-lower computer system architecture based on PXI bus. In software design, the program is written in LabVIEW, which mainly includes the data processing and display program in the upper computer and the data acquisition program, the loading motor control program and the actuator control program in the lower computer (PXI), in order to ensure the loading accuracy of ELLS, control methods such as force closed-loop PID controller, position feedforward compensation and input feedforward compensation are also introduced in the loading motor program. Finally, the ELLS was built and the signal tracking tests were carried out. The experimental results shows that the loading accuracy can reach 93.5% and 90.3% when ELLS tracks 1000N-2 Hz and 1000N-5 Hz respectively, which proved that the accuracy of ELLS satisfies the “Double Ten Index”.

World Heritage sites in general are exposed to the impacts of natural hazards, which threaten their integrity and may compromise their value. Floods are a severe threat to the Angkor World Heritage site. Studies of regional floods and flood hazard zoning have played an increasingly important role in ensuring sustainability of the Angkor site. This study developed a flood hazard index (FHI) model based on a geographic information system (GIS) and used synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to extract historical floods at Angkor from 2007 to 2013. Four indices (flood affected frequency, absolute elevation, elevation standard deviation, drainage density) were used to identify flood-prone areas. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Delphi method were employed to determine the weight of each index. The weighted indices were then used to develop a distribution map of flood hazards at Angkor. The results show that 9 monuments are at risk by potential floods among the 52 components of the Angkor monuments. The high hazard and moderate-to-high hazard areas in the core zone are mainly located surrounding the West Baray but will not bring direct risk impact on the monuments located in the core archaeological zone. The moderate hazard areas are located on both sides of the Siem Reap and Roluos rivers and in the flooded area of the Tonle Sap Lake in the core archaeological zone. These areas cover 19.4 km2, accounting for 9.13% of the total area of the core zone. This moderate hazard zone poses a greater flood threat to the core zone and must be given higher attention. The buffer zone is a small area with fewer sites. As such, flooding has a low impact on the buffer zone. The methods used in this study can be applied to flood hazard assessments of other heritage sites in Southeast Asia.

An optical fiber is a promising approach for data and clock transmission in distributed underwater sonar systems. However, synchronization is a critical challenge in distributed sonar systems, which mandates accurate clock synchronization down to a sub degree. Potential phase misalignment is caused by fiber length variations. In this paper, we propose a fiber-based phase stabilizer method to achieve accurate clock synchronization among sensor nodes. We use fiber-based feedback loop between sensor nodes and central station unit to monitor phase variations. Subsequently, we leverage phase shifters symmetrically arranged on the forward lane and feedback lane to compensate real-time phase variation and maintain high-precision synchronization. Besides, an ambiguity eliminator circuit is designed to remove the clock’s cyclic ambiguity. Both analysis and experimental results suggest that the proposed phase stabilizer can achieve 10 MHz reference clock synchronization within 0.4 degree. We also analyze the impact of the reference clock’s phase error on the system range detection accuracy, which indicates that the proposed phase stabilizer can greatly improve detection accuracy of sonar systems.

Phased array radars are able to provide highly accurate airplane surveillance and tracking performance if they are properly calibrated. However, the ambient temperature variation and device aging could greatly deteriorate their performance. Currently, performing a calibration over a large-scale phased array with thousands of antennas is time-consuming. To facilitate the process, we propose a fast calibration method for phased arrays with omnidirectional radiation patterns based on the graph coloring theory. This method transforms the calibration problem into a coloring problem that aims at minimizing the number of used colors. By reusing the calibration time slots spatially, more than one omnidirectional antenna can perform calibration simultaneously. The simulation proves this method can prominently reduce total calibration time and recover the radiation pattern from amplitude and phase errors and noise. It is worth noting that the total calibration time consumed by the proposed method remains constant and is negligible compared with other calibration methods.

A single piezoelectric patch can be used as both a sensor and an actuator by means of the self-sensing piezoelectric actuator, and the function of self-sensing shows several advantages in many application fields. However, some problems exist in practical application. First, a capacitance bridge circuit is set up to realize the function of self-sensing, but the precise matching of the capacitance of the bridge circuit is hard to obtain due to the standardization of electric components and variations of environmental conditions. Second, a local strain is induced by the self-sensing actuator that is not related to the global vibration of the structure, which would affect the performance of applications, especially in active vibration control. The above problems can be tackled by the feedforward compensation method that is proposed in this paper. A configured piezoelectric self-sensing circuit is improved by a feedforward compensation tunnel, and a gain of compensation voltage is adjusted by the time domain and frequency domain’s steepest descent algorithms to alleviate the capacitance mismatching and local strain problems. The effectiveness of the method is verified in the experiment of the active vibration control in a wind tunnel, and the control performance of compensated self-sensing actuation is compared to the performance with capacitance mismatching and local strain. It is found that the above problems have negative effects on the stability and performance of the vibration control and can be significantly eliminated by the proposed method.

Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of weather variables in influencing the incidence of influenza. However, the role of air pollution is often ignored in identifying the environmental drivers of influenza. This research aims to examine the impacts of air pollutants and temperature on the incidence of pediatric influenza in Brisbane, Australia. Lab-confirmed daily data on influenza counts among children aged 0–14 years in Brisbane from 2001 January 1st to 2008 December 31st were retrieved from Queensland Health. Daily data on maximum and minimum temperatures for the same period were supplied by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Winter was chosen as the main study season due to it having the highest pediatric influenza incidence. Four Poisson log-linear regression models, with daily pediatric seasonal influenza counts as the outcome, were used to examine the impacts of air pollutants (i.e., ozone (O3), particulate matter ≤ 10 μm (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)) and temperature (using a moving average of ten days for these variables) on pediatric influenza. The results show that mean temperature (Relative risk (RR): 0.86; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.82–0.89) was negatively associated with pediatric seasonal influenza in Brisbane, and high concentrations of O3 (RR: 1.28; 95% CI: 1.25–1.31) and PM10 (RR: 1.11; 95% CI: 1.10–1.13) were associated with more pediatric influenza cases. There was a significant interaction effect (RR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.93–0.95) between PM10 and mean temperature on pediatric influenza. Adding the interaction term between mean temperature and PM10 substantially improved the model fit. This study provides evidence that PM10 needs to be taken into account when evaluating the temperature–influenza relationship. O3 was also an important predictor, independent of temperature.
