Abstract

Electrochemical reduction of N2 at ambient conditions is emerging as a promising route and can be powered by sustainable energies. Large overpotential and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are the two major issues associated with the N2 reduction. Thus, the development of efficient electrocatalysts with low overpotential is of utmost significance for electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). In this theoretical study, we report a valuable insight toward a novel two dimensional (2D) transition metal monoboride (TMB) material possessing efficient electrocatalysts application for NRR, investigated by density functional theory method. Through systematically exploring the Gibbs free energy of N2 adsorption on the different TMB (TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Mo) nanosheets and analyzing adsorption energy of N2H and NH2 species on these catalysts, we found MoB nanosheets may be the optimum choice as an electrocatalyst for NRR. Moreover, our results also indicate that NRR on MoB nanosheets via the enzymatic pathway is the most favored pathway and *NH*NH → *NH*NH2 is potential‐limiting step with a very low applied overpotential of 0.14 V. In addition, the limiting potentials of NRR (−0.30 V) and HER (−0.48 V) on MoB nanosheet suggest that NRR is prefer to happen on the catalyst. Overall, this study demonstrates that MoB nanosheets as a novel 2D monolayer, which might be utilized as an efficient electrocatalyst for NRR at ambient conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

MgO/NiFe/MgO trilayers, the new development in highly sensitive anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) sensor film materials, exhibit severely reduced magnetoresistance ratios at small NiFe thicknesses. By inserting ultrathin NiFe(І) layers into the top and bottom MgO layers of MgO/NiFe/MgO trilayers, films with a structure of MgO/NiFe(І)/MgO/NiFe/MgO/NiFe(І)/MgO were designed and synthesized. The AMR value can be significantly enhanced for thin NiFe films due to the improved specular reflections of electrons at both NiFe/MgO interfaces. For a thin NiFe film with the structure of MgO/NiFe(І)(1.5 nm)/MgO/NiFe(5 nm)/MgO/NiFe(І)(1.5 nm)/MgO, the AMR value was greatly enhanced to as high as 2.71%, an increase of 37% over MgO/NiFe(5 nm)/MgO film. Abstract

Aerobic recovered carbon fibers (ARCFs) are chosen as functionalized support for both anodic MoO2and cathodic MnO2of asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). Based on the improved surface area, enhanced specific capacitance, and expanded potential window derived from O-containing radicals on the ARCF surface, the potentials of MoO2/ARCF anode and MnO2/ARCF cathode are respectively widened to −1.2 to 0 and 0–1.0 V, and thus the voltage range of ASC constructed by the MoO2/ARCF anode and MnO2/ARCF cathode is 2.2 V. In addition, this ASC exhibits a maximum energy density of 39.4 Wh kg–1and power density of 5.5 kW kg–1and owns 93.75% capacitance retention after 3000 cycles. This work provides a new strategy to develop a high-performance energy-storage device by choosing a functionalized support.

Abstract

A stable, efficient, and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction catalyst is very momentous to deal with energy crisis and achieve sustainable energy conversion and storage. Herein, the composite of Ni(OH)2 and reduced graphene oxide were obtained by a hydrothermal method at a high temperature and high pressure in a one-step hydrothermal process. SEM images showed that a multilayer sandwich structure with reduced graphene oxide in the middle of two layers of Ni(OH)2 was achieved for the electrode. This unique hierarchical catalyst exhibited remarkable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrochemical activity in 1 M KOH media: a 313-mV overpotential at 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 46 mV dec−1, and excellent stability for a 22-h chronopotentiometry test. In addition, the overpotential of our catalyst is much lower than that of RuO2, i.e., 20 mV lower at 50 mA cm−2. Abstract

A series of nickel foam (NF)-based composites of MxOy/RGO/Ni(OH)2 [MxOy = Co3O4, MnO2, and Ni(OH)2] with diverse multilayer nano-architectures were designed and grown in situ on NF through a one-pot hydrothermal process. Based on the redox reaction between the active NF substrate and graphene oxide (GO), along with electrostatic forces between the Mn+ ions and GO in the solution, strong interactions take place at the interfaces of MxOy/RGO, RGO/Ni(OH)2, and Ni(OH)2/Ni, and thus, there is good contact for electron transfer. These MxOy/RGO/Ni(OH)2 samples were directly used as conductive-agent- and binder-free anodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), and the Ni(OH)2/RGO/Ni(OH)2/NF composite electrode showed a high specific capacity, good rate capability, and excellent cycling stability, especially, it had a high reversible capacity of about 1330 mAh g-1 even after 200 cycles at 100 mA g-1. This general strategy presents a promising route for the design and synthesis of various multilayer nano-architectural transition metal oxides (hydroxide)/RGO composites on NF as energy storage materials.

146. In situ conversion of sub-4 nm Co(OH)2 nanosheet arrays from phytic acid-derived Co3(HPO4)2(OH)2 for superior high loading supercapacitors.

Abstract

Co(OH)2 is a candidate cathode material for supercapacitors due to its essential features of high theoretical capacity and long cycle life. Herein, by using phytic acid (PA) as an intermediate connector between Co foam substrates and Ni2+ ions, a Ni-PA nanofilm-covered Co3(HPO4)2(OH)2 precursor was grown in situ on Co foam in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS). A 3D nanoarchitecture of ultrathin Co(OH)2 nanosheet arrays was built through the spontaneous in situ conversion of a Co3(HPO4)2(OH)2 precursor immersed in an alkaline solution. Even with a high loading of 12 mg cm−2, the as-prepared SDS-modified Ni-PA/Co(OH)2@CoF (SNC@CoF) electrodes exhibited a high specific capacitance (Qm) of 429 mA h g−1 (0.42 A g−1) and excellent cyclability with 124.3% retention after 20 000 cycles. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) using the modified material can deliver a large energy density of 51.3 W h kg−1 and an outstanding cycle life (96% retention after 20 000 cycles). 148. Porous Co9S8Nanosheet Arrays@Co Foam Electrode via in Situ Sulfidation at Room Temperature for Superior Supercapacitors

Abstract

In this work, novel porous Co9S8nanosheet arrays are prepared on Co foam through a simple and scalable chemical liquid-phase processing strategy, which involves the uniform growth of cobalt hydroxide hydrogen phosphate microbelts followed by subsequent in situ sulfidation with sodium sulfide at room temperature. As-prepared porous Co9S8nanosheet arrays can be directly used as binderless electrodes for a supercapacitor. Even at a high mass loading of 11.54 mg cm–2, it delivers a high capacitance of 14518.9 mF cm–2(1279.4 F g–1) and an exceptional cycle life with a capacitance retention of 85.7% after 15000 cycles at 200 mA cm–2. Moreover, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor based on an activated carbon negative electrode delivers an encouraging energy density (42.9 W h kg–1at 828.5 W kg–1) and an excellent cycle life (86% retention after 10000 cycles). This method can be extended to design and construct other high-performance sulfide electrodes for supercapacitors and other energy storage systems.

149. Surface Reconstruction of La0.8Sr0.2Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δfor Superimposed OER Performance

Abstract

Perovskites have become important OER electrocatalysts. Herein, as-prepared La0.8Sr0.2Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ(LSCF-0) is chosen as a sample to exhibit the superimposed effect of surface reconstruction accompanied by reduction of Co3+to Co2+on the further improvement of its activity and stability. As-synthesized LSCF-0 perovskite is chemically treated by simply immersing in an aqueous solution of NaBH4for 1.0 h at room temperature. The optimized LSCF (LSCF-2) owns an amorphous layer consisting of nanosized particles of ∼20 nm (vs smooth bulk crystalline surface for untreated LSCF), which exhibits superior OER performance to LSCF-0. LSCF-2 has an overpotential of 248 mV (10 mA cm–2) and a Tafel slope of 51 mV dec–1(vs 355 mV and 76 mV dec–1for LSCF-0 and 381 mV and 91 mV dec–1for LCO) and an excellent cycle stability for 20 h running. This work supplies a new strategy to enhance OER performance through surface reconstruction of as-prepared perovskites.
