In this paper, we focus on the general free scalar-tensor gravity with three free coupling functions, which in the near-field region looks like general relativity (GR) plus a fifth force of Yukawa-type induced by the scalar field. We show that the fifth force is always attractive in the theory. We investigate the effects of the attractive fifth force and calculate in detail the fifth force-induced orbital precession rate $\delta\omega/\omega$ and the parameterized post-Newtonian parameters $\gamma$ and $\beta$, all of which depend on the fifth force parameters and the interaction distance. It turns out that, due to the attractive fifth force, $\delta\omega/\omega$ is always greater than zero, $\gamma$ is always less than one, $\beta$ is greater than one at large distances, and additionally this class of theories is ruled out as an alternative theory to dark matter. We place stringent constraints on the fifth force parameters by combining the lunar laser ranging (LLR), Cassini, and Mercury precession experiments, and derive the upper bounds on the strength ratio of the fifth force to gravitational force at different scales from the LLR observation. We find that the Mercury constraint is not competitive with the LLR and Cassini constraints and the LLR observation imposes much more stringent bounds on the strength ratio on large scales than on small scales. Removing degradation from document images not only improves their visual quality and readability, but also enhances the performance of numerous automated document analysis and recognition tasks. However, existing regression-based methods optimized for pixel-level distortion reduction tend to suffer from significant loss of high-frequency information, leading to distorted and blurred text edges. To compensate for this major deficiency, we propose DocDiff, the first diffusion-based framework specifically designed for diverse challenging document enhancement problems, including document deblurring, denoising, and removal of watermarks and seals. DocDiff consists of two modules: the Coarse Predictor (CP), which is responsible for recovering the primary low-frequency content, and the High-Frequency Residual Refinement (HRR) module, which adopts the diffusion models to predict the residual (high-frequency information, including text edges), between the ground-truth and the CP-predicted image. DocDiff is a compact and computationally efficient model that benefits from a well-designed network architecture, an optimized training loss objective, and a deterministic sampling process with short time steps. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DocDiff achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on multiple benchmark datasets, and can significantly enhance the readability and recognizability of degraded document images. Furthermore, our proposed HRR module in pre-trained DocDiff is plug-and-play and ready-to-use, with only 4.17M parameters. A superconducting microstrip single-photon detector (SMSPD) generally requires a shunt resistor to avoid latching, caused by its high current-carrying capacity and low kinetic inductance. Here, the effect of the shunt resistor on the behaviors of microbridge SMSPDs was investigated. We analyzed the change in equivalent switching current at different shunt resistances in two ways and determined the operating current range using intrinsic dark count rate (iDCR) curves. We observed that the reduction in shunt resistance can increase the operating current range, which helps to improve the internal detection efficiency (IDE) and reduce the iDCR. However, the reduction in the shunt resistance can reduce the pulse amplitude and increase the pulse decay time, which can degrade the timing jitter and count rate performance of the SMSPD. The trends of the experimental results can be qualitatively reproduced using a circuit model for an SMSPD with a shunt resistor, which provides useful information for the selection of shunt resistors. Furthermore, we report the improved detection performance of a helium-ion-irradiated SMSPD shunted with a small resistance of 5.2 {\Omega}. We present a general computational framework to investigate ground state properties of quantum spin models on infinite two-dimensional lattices using automatic differentiation-based gradient optimization of infinite projected entangled-pair states. The approach exploits the variational uniform matrix product states to contract infinite tensor networks with unit-cell structure and incorporates automatic differentiation to optimize the local tensors. We applied this framework to the Kitaev-type model, which involves complex interactions and competing ground states. To evaluate the accuracy of this method, we compared the results with exact solutions for the Kitaev model and found that it has a better agreement for various observables compared to previous tensor network calculations based on imaginary-time projection. Additionally, by finding out the ground state with lower variational energy compared to previous studies, we provided convincing evidence for the existence of nematic paramagnetic phases and 18-site configuration in the phase diagram of the $K$-$\Gamma$ model. Furthermore, in the case of the realistic $K$-$J$-$\Gamma$-$\Gamma'$ model for the Kitaev material $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, we discovered a non-colinear zigzag ground state. Lastly, we also find that the strength of the critical out-of-plane magnetic field that suppresses such a zigzag state has a lower transition field value than the previous finite-cylinder calculations. The framework is versatile and will be useful for a quick scan of phase diagrams for a broad class of quantum spin models.

We propose a method for coupling a tapered optical fiber to an inverted tapered SiN waveguide by fabricating a microfiber using 3D nanoprinting lithography. The microfiber consists of three parts: a tapered cladding cap, an S-bend, and a straight part, all composed of high-refractive-index material. Light is adiabatically coupled from the tapered fiber to the printed microfiber through the cladding cap. The light is then transmitted through the S-bend and the straight part with low loss and is finally coupled to the waveguide through the evanescent field. In the simulation, our design can achieve a high coupling efficiency (TE mode) of ~97% at a wavelength of 1542 nm with a wide bandwidth of ~768 nm at the 1-dB cut-off criterion., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Quantization plays a critical role in digital signal processing systems, allowing the representation of continuous amplitude signals with a finite number of bits. However, accurately representing signals requires a large number of quantization bits, which causes severe cost, power consumption, and memory burden. A promising way to address this issue is task-based quantization. By exploiting the task information for the overall system design, task-based quantization can achieve satisfying performance with low quantization costs. In this work, we apply task-based quantization to multi-user signal recovery and present a hardware prototype implementation. The prototype consists of a tailored configurable combining board, and a software-based processing and demonstration system. Through experiments, we verify that with proper design, the task-based quantization achieves a reduction of 25 fold in memory by reducing from 16 receivers with 16 bits each to 2 receivers with 5 bits each, without compromising signal recovery performance.

The employment of extremely large antenna arrays and high-frequency signaling makes future 6G wireless communications likely to operate in the near-field region. In this case, the spherical wave assumption which takes into account both the user angle and distance is more accurate than the conventional planar one that is only related to the user angle. Therefore, the conventional planar wave based far-field channel model as well as its associated estimation algorithms needs to be reconsidered. Here we first propose a distance-parameterized angular-domain sparse model to represent the near-field channel. In this model, the user distance is included in the dictionary as an unknown parameter, so that the number of dictionary columns depends only on the angular space division. This is different from the existing polar-domain near-field channel model where the dictionary is constructed on an angle-distance two-dimensional (2D) space. Next, based on this model, joint dictionary learning and sparse recovery based channel estimation methods are proposed for both line of sight (LoS) and multi-path settings. To further demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested algorithms, recovery conditions and computational complexity are studied. Our analysis shows that with the decrease of distance estimation error in the dictionary, the angular-domain sparse vector can be exactly recovered after a few iterations. The high storage burden and dictionary coherence issues that arise in the polar-domain 2D representation are well addressed. Finally, simulations in multi-user communication scenarios support the superiority of the proposed near-field channel sparse representation and estimation over the existing polar-domain method in channel estimation error.

The origin of the high temperature superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors remains elusive after being extensively studied for more than a decade. Determination of the pairing symmetry is essential in understanding the superconductivity mechanism. In the iron-based superconductors that have hole pockets around the Brillouin zone center and electron pockets around the zone corners, the pairing symmetry is generally considered to be s$_\pm$, endowing a sign change in the superconducting gap between the hole and electron pockets. For the iron-based superconductors with only hole pockets, however, a couple of pairing scenarios have been proposed but the exact symmetry is still highly controversial. Here we report our determination of the pairing symmetry in KFe$_2$As$_2$ which is a prototypical iron-based superconductor with hole pockets both around the zone center and around the zone corners. By taking laser-based angle resolved photoemission measurements with super-high resolution and at ultra-low temperature, we have precisely determined the superconducting gap distribution and identified the locations of the gap nodes on all the Fermi surface around the zone center and the zone corners. The complete superconducting gap structure, in combination with the observation of the spin resonance in neutron scattering, provides strong evidence on the s$_\pm$ pairing symmetry in KFe$_2$As$_2$ with a gap sign reversal between the hole pockets around the zone center and the hole pockets around the zone corners. These results unify the pairing symmetry in the hole-doped iron-based superconductors and point to the spin fluctuation as the pairing glue in generating superconductivity.

As the COVID-19 pandemic puts pressure on healthcare systems worldwide, the computed tomography image based AI diagnostic system has become a sustainable solution for early diagnosis. However, the model-wise vulnerability under adversarial perturbation hinders its deployment in practical situation. The existing adversarial training strategies are difficult to generalized into medical imaging field challenged by complex medical texture features. To overcome this challenge, we propose a Contour Attention Preserving (CAP) method based on lung cavity edge extraction. The contour prior features are injected to attention layer via a parameter regularization and we optimize the robust empirical risk with hybrid distance metric. We then introduce a new cross-nation CT scan dataset to evaluate the generalization capability of the adversarial robustness under distribution shift. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in multiple adversarial defense and generalization tasks. We study a simple extension of the original Hartnoll, Herzog and Horowitz (HHH) holographic superfluid model with two nonlinear scalar self-interaction terms $\lambda |\psi|^4$ and $\tau |\psi|^6$ in the probe limit. Depending on the value of $\lambda$ and $\tau$, this setup allows us to realize a large spectrum of holographic phase transitions which are 2nd, 1st and 0th order as well as the ``cave of wind'' phase transition. We speculate the landscape pictures and explore the near equilibrium dynamics of the lowest quasinormal modes (QNMs) across the whole phase diagram at both zero and finite wave-vector. We find that the zero wave-vector results of QNMs correctly present the stability of the system under homogeneous perturbations and perfectly agree with the landscape analysis of homogeneous configurations in canonical ensemble. The zero wave-vector results also show that a 0th order phase transition cannot occur since it always corresponds to a global instability of the whole system. The finite wave-vector results show that under inhomogeneous perturbations, the unstable region is larger than that under only homogeneous perturbations, and the new boundary of instability match with the turning point of condensate curve in grand canonical ensemble, indicating a new explanation from the subsystem point of view. The practical description of disordered chemical reactions, where reactions involve multiple species at multiple sites, is presently challenge using correlated electronic structure methods. Here we describe the gradient theory of multi-fragment density matrix embedding theory, which potentially provides a minimal computational framework to model such processes at the correlated electron level. We present the derivation and implementation of the gradient theory, its validation on model systems and chemical reactions using density matrix embedding, and its application to a molecular dynamics simulation of proton transport in a small water cluster, a simple example of multi-site reaction dynamics.

With the rapid development of cloud computing, edge computing, and smart devices, computing power resources indicate a trend of ubiquitous deployment. The traditional network architecture cannot efficiently leverage these distributed computing power resources due to computing power island effect. To overcome these problems and improve network efficiency, a new network computing paradigm is proposed, i.e., Computing Power Network (CPN). Computing power network can connect ubiquitous and heterogenous computing power resources through networking to realize computing power scheduling flexibly. In this survey, we make an exhaustive review on the state-of-the-art research efforts on computing power network. We first give an overview of computing power network, including definition, architecture, and advantages. Next, a comprehensive elaboration of issues on computing power modeling, information awareness and announcement, resource allocation, network forwarding, computing power transaction platform and resource orchestration platform is presented. The computing power network testbed is built and evaluated. The applications and use cases in computing power network are discussed. Then, the key enabling technologies for computing power network are introduced. Finally, open challenges and future research directions are presented as well.
