110. A real pivot structure for MEMS tunable lasers

Abstract

This paper presents the design of a real pivot formed by a double-clamped beam for the rotational tuning structures in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) tunable lasers. Micromechanical properties such as beam deformation, pivot position and pivot shift are investigated and compared with the virtual pivot formed by a cantilever beam. It is shown that the real pivot has negligible shift when subjected to load and fabrication error owing to its feature of structural symmetry, while the virtual pivot suffers from significant pivot shift, which would severely limit the wavelength tuning range. The two pivot designs are implemented into MEMS tuning structures that are fabricated by deep etching and released using a dry release approach. The real pivot measures a depth variation of 16% over the double-clamped beam but maintains the symmetry to the midpoint, and is still able to produce a rotation angle of 4.7[degrees]. In contrast, the virtual pivot has a depth reduction of 4% over the cantilever beam, but achieves only a 2.4[degrees] rotation due to the pull-in problem originated from the severe pivot shift. The real pivot design is more suitable for the MEMS tunable lasers as it is simple, symmetric, robust, and suitable for single-chip integration. Abstract

A self-latched micromachined mechanism with large displacement ratio is presented in this paper. The large output displacement is obtained by amplifying the small input motion through the elastic deformation of the compliant configuration, which realizes the self-latched output by local bifurcation effect. The design theory and synthesis of compliant microstructures are analyzed. The numerical and analytical simulations are implemented to the linear amplification, which shows that as high as >50 times displacement magnification can be obtained. Self-latching is realized by bifurcation effect to maintain fixed output displacement even though the input goes further as indicated by the large displacement simulation. This micromachined mechanism along with a comb-drive actuator is fabricated by deep-reactive ion-etching (DRIE) process. In experiment, it measures an output displacement of 52.0 [micro]m at an input displacement of only 0.96 [micro]m, obtaining a displacement ratio of 54.2. For further input displacement, the output displacement remains unchanged, proving the self-latching effect. Abstract

In one-dimensional hexagonal piezoelectric quasi-crystals, there exist the phonon–phason, electro–phonon, and electro–phason couplings. Therefore, the phonon–phason coupling and piezoelectric effects on axial guided wave characteristics in one-dimensional hexagonal functionally graded piezoelectric quasi-crystal (FGPQC) cylinders are investigated by utilizing the Legendre polynomial series method. The dispersion curves and cut-off frequencies are illustrated. Wave characteristics in three hollow cylinders with different quasi-periodic directions are comparatively studied. Some new wave phenomena are revealed: the phonon–phason coupling and piezoelectric effects on the longitudinal and torsional phonon modes (N = 0) vary as the quasi-periodic direction changes; the phonon–phason coupling effect on flexural–torsional modes in the r -, z -FGPQC hollow cylinders, and on flexural–longitudinal modes in ϑ -FGPQC hollow cylinders increases as N increases. The corresponding results obtained in this work lay the theoretical foundation for the design and manufacture of piezoelectric transducers with high resolution and energy-conversion efficiency. Abstract

Human mononuclear phagocytes comprise phenotypically and functionally overlapping subsets of dendritic cells (DCs) and monocytes, but the extent of their heterogeneity and distinct markers for subset identification remains elusive. By integrating high-dimensional single-cell protein and RNA expression data, we identified distinct markers to delineate monocytes from conventional DC2 (cDC2s). Using CD88 and CD89 for monocytes and HLA-DQ and FcεRIα for cDC2s allowed for their specific identification in blood and tissues. We also showed that cDC2s could be subdivided into phenotypically and functionally distinct subsets based on CD5, CD163, and CD14 expression, including a distinct subset of circulating inflammatory CD5−CD163+CD14+ cells related to previously defined DC3s. These inflammatory DC3s were expanded in systemic lupus erythematosus patients and correlated with disease activity. These findings further unravel the heterogeneity of DC subpopulations in health and disease and may pave the way for the identification of specific DC subset-targeting therapies. Using high-dimensional protein and RNA single-cell analyses, Dutertre et al. analyze human dendritic cell and monocyte subsets and identify markers that delineate them and unravel their heterogeneity. They also reveal the presence of inflammatory CD14+ DC3s, a subset of cDC2s, that correlate with disease progression and may be functionally involved in systemic lupus erythematosus immunopathology. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.

Abstract

Se piensa que las comunidades microbianas del suelo son responsables del efecto de preparación de la rizósfera (RPE). Sin embargo, desde que las comunidades microbiales están compuestas de diversos componentes, se conoce muy poco acerca de cuál es el componente que tiene el rol principal en dicho efecto. En este estudio, se hicieron crecer soja y algodón en dos lugares a diferentes latitudes con diferentes condiciones de luz y temperatura in situ. Se cuantificó RPE usando un método natural de δC13 y se midió la abundancia, riqueza y composición de las comunidades de hongos y bacterias con métodos moleculares basados en el ADN. Entre todas las variables potenciales, incluyendo los tres índices de comunidades de hongos y bacterias anteriormente mencionados, e índices vegetales y físico-químicos del suelo, se mostró que la abundancia de bacterias explicó una gran proporción de la variación en RPE. Nuestro estudio identificó el mecanismo biológico que subyace este importante proceso ecológico. Soil microbial communities are thougth to be responsible for the rhizosphere priming effect (RPE). However, because soil microbial communities are comprised of diverse components, very little is known about which component plays the critical role. Here, soybean and cottonwood were grown at two latitudinal locations with different temperature and light conditions in-situ. We quantified RPE using a natural 13C method, and measured the abundance, richness and composition of bacteria and fungi communities with DNA-based molecular methods. Among all potential variables, including the three aforementioned indexes of bacteria and fungi communities and soil physiochemical and plant indexes, bacterial abundance was found to explain a large proportion of variation in RPE. Abstract

Reflection high-energy electron diffraction and optical measurements show that only a single monolayer (ML) of InAs can be grown pseudomorphically on GaAs. InAs can be grown up to a thickness of one ML and deposition of two MLs will result in three dimensional nucleation. However, when two MLs are deposited, the growth of the first ML is disrupted by growth of the second ML. This result is contrary to the original Stranski-Krastanov growth model.
