Abstract

Graphical abstract In papers of the piezoelectric coating/substrate system under smooth spherical contact (DOI: 10.1177/1081 286519 865773), conical contact (DOI: 10.1016/j.ijsolstr.2019.08.031), and cylinder flat head contact (DOI: 10.1007/s11012-019-01085-1), Green's function method has been applied to solve the problem of piezoelectric friction contact. We deduced the analytical expression of piezoelectric coating structure, which is expressed by elementary functions. The numerical results highlight the best thickness to maintain a higher potential difference and a critical potential difference. 113. Frontal Neurons Modulate Memory Retrieval across Widely Varying Temporal Scales

Abstract

Once a memory has formed, it is thought to undergo a gradual transition within the brain from short- to long-term storage. This putative process, however, also poses a unique problem to the memory system in that the same learned items must also be retrieved across broadly varying time scales. Here, we find that neurons in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) of monkeys, an area interconnected with both temporal and frontal associative neocortical regions, signaled the need to alter between retrieval of memories formed at different times. These signals were most closely related to the time interval between initial learning and later retrieval, and did not correlate with task switch demands, novelty, or behavioral response. Consistent with these physiological findings, focal inactivation of the VLPFC led to a marked degradation in retrieval performance. These findings suggest that the VLPFC plays a necessary regulatory role in retrieving memories over different temporal scales.

148. Analysis of the Composition and Microstructure of Coral Fossil

Abstract

Coral fossil is formed by various geological effects while buried under the ground for a long time. Current research on coral fossils is focused mainly on the geological and biological evolution of the coral fossils, but less on their components and microstructure. X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Thermo-gravimetric Analysis (TG) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and other methods were conducted to determine composition, content and microstructure characteristics of coral fossil samples collected from Shanxi province. The results show that the coral fossils from Shanxi province are composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and the average content is as high as 98.6%. Phase transition of coral fossils occurred at 700℃ with a sharp decline in the mass, namely the CaCO3 decomposed to CaO and CO2. The internal structure of Coral fossils showed a large number of pores whose size is 1-5 μm. Fracture morphology is the same as cleavage fracture, corresponding with 'river pattern'. Coral fossil storage and processing methods to avoid acidic substances and high temperature are described. The highest temperature is 650℃. It is important to avoid a cleavage plane or make an angle between a facet and cleavage plane during processing.
