115. Active View Planning for Visual SLAM in Outdoor Environments Based on Continuous Information Modeling

Abstract

Visual simultaneous localization and mapping (vSLAM) is widely used in satellite-denied and open-field environments for ground and surface robots. However, due to frequent perception failures derived from featureless areas or the swing of robot view direction on rough terrains, the accuracy and robustness of vSLAM are still to be enhanced. This article develops a novel view planning approach of actively perceiving areas with maximal information to address the mentioned problem; a gimbal camera is used as the main sensor. First, a map representation based on feature distribution-weighted Fisher information is proposed to completely and effectively represent environmental information richness. With the map representation, a continuous environmental information model is further established to convert the discrete information space into a continuous one for numerical optimization in real time. Subsequently, receding horizon optimization is utilized to obtain the optimal informative viewpoints with simultaneously considering the robotic perception, exploration, and motion cost based on the continuous environmental model. Finally, several simulations and outdoor experiments are performed to verify the improvement of localization robustness and accuracy by the proposed approach. We release our implementation as an open-source1 package for the community.

Abstract

Apples and their products exemplify the recently reemphasized link between dietary fruit intake and the alleviation of human disease. Their consumption does indeed improve human health due to their high phytochemical content. To identify potentially relevant articles from clinical trials, some epidemiological studies and meta‐analyses, and in vitro and in vivo studies (cell cultures and animal models), PubMed was searched from January 1, 2012, to May 15, 2022. This review summarized the potential effects of apple and apple products (juices, puree, pomace, dried apples, extracts rich in apple bioactives and single apple bioactives) on health. Apples and apple products have protective effects against cardiovascular diseases, cancer, as well as mild cognitive impairment and promote hair growth, healing of burn wounds, improve the oral environment, prevent niacin‐induced skin flushing, promote the relief of UV‐induced skin pigmentation, and improve the symptoms of atopic dermatitis as well as cedar hay fever among others. These effects are associated with various mechanisms, such as vascular endothelial protection, blood lipids lowering, anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant, antiapoptotic, anti‐invasion, and antimetastatic effects. Abstract

The viscoelastic properties of a gallium-indium alloy in the pre-yield region make it easier to understand their characteristics, particularly the varying degrees of stiffness and damping properties. These viscoelastic properties were measured with a strain-controlled rheometer, where both strain amplitude sweep mode and the angular frequency sweep mode were conducted. Three groups of experiments were carried out in the strain amplitude sweep mode. In the angular frequency sweep mode, the storage modulus G′ and the loss modulus G″ were investigated at the linear region, the critical region, and the non-linear region. Experimental results indicate that the gallium-indium alloy exhibited similar viscoelastic properties. The linear viscoelastic region takes place when the strain amplitude is less than the critical strain amplitude of 1 %. At the critical regime, the gallium-indium alloy has the strongest relative elasticity. These results are helpful to understand the intrinsic properties of gallium-indium alloys and find their application in flexible circuits, soft robotics, self-healing, and mechanical shock absorption.

Abstract

We present the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) at $z=2-3$ in the stellar mass range of $M_\star\approx 10^{6.5}-10^{9.5}M_\odot$ using 55 dwarf galaxies in the Abell 2744 and SMACS J0723-3732 galaxy cluster fields. These dwarf galaxies are identified and confirmed by deep JWST/NIRISS imaging and slitless grism spectroscopic observations. Taking advantage of the gravitational lensing effect, we extend the previous MZR relation at $z=2-3$ to a much lower mass regime by more than 2.5 orders of magnitude compared with previous studies. We find that the MZR has a shallower slope at the low-mass end ($M_\star10^{9}M_\odot$), with a slope turnover point at around the stellar mass of $10^9 M_\odot$. This implies that dominating feedback processes in dwarf galaxies may be different from that in galaxies with higher mass. From $z=3$ to $z=2$, the metallicity of the dwarf galaxies is enhanced by $\approx0.1$ dex for a given stellar mass, consistent with the mild evolution found in galaxies with higher mass. Further, we confirm the existence of a 3D relation between the gas-phase metallicity, stellar mass, and star formation rate, i.e., fundamental metallicity relation (FMR), in dwarf galaxies at $z=2-3$.
