In the natural composites, the reinforcement particles are subtly organized into complex structures in matrix, and its various microstructures endow the biomaterials with a variety of excellent mechanical behaviors. Among the various reinforcement building blocks used in biomaterials, short fibers are the most ubiquitous reinforcement elements. Unfortunately, because of the limitation of fabrication technique, replication of these fiber-reinforced biological composites can be extremely difficult in practice. In this paper, we developed a fiber assembly 3D printing process, which can manipulate the orientation of fibers during 3D printing procedure. Benefiting from this technology, the reinforcement particles were manipulated remotely and the arrangement of reinforcement particles with higher degree of freedom was achieved. Subsequently, based on the herringbone-modified helicoidal architecture of mantis shrimp, the bio-inspired composites with various microstructures were reconstructed by 3D magnetic printing. In addition, the influence of microstructure type and parameters of bio-inspired composites on the properties of composites was studied systematically, and the quantitative relationship between microstructure and properties of the composites was established. The results show that the impact resistance and compression resistance of the composites can be significantly improved by the simple internal microstructures design, and the regression model established in this article can be used for accurate prediction of composites properties and the reliability is higher. In a word, this study opens a new route for the design of composites with unusual features.

This study aimed to investigate the potential involvement of FEZF1-AS1 in GBM.Methods: FEZF1-AS1 expression in paired GBM and non-tumor tissues from GBM patients was determined by RT-qPCR. A 2-year follow-up was performed to analyze the prognostic value of FEZF1-AS1 for GBM. Cell transfections were performed to analyze the interactions between FEZF1-AS1, miR-34a and Notch-1. Transwell assay was performed to analyze the role of FEZF1-AS1, miR-34a and Notch-1 in regulating GBM cell invasion and migration.Results: In this study, analysis of TCGA dataset revealed the upregulation of FEZF1-AS1 in GBM, and the overexpression of FEZF1-AS1 in GBM was further confirmed using GBM tissues from GBM patients included in this study. High levels of FEZF1-AS1 were correlated with poor survival. FEZF1-AS1 was predicted to form base pairing with miR-34a. However, overexpression of FEZF1-AS1 and miR-34a failed to affect the expression of each other. However, upregulation of Notch-1, a target of miR-34a, was observed after FEZF1-AS1 in GBM cells. Moreover, increased invasion and migration rates of GBM cells were observed after FEZF1-AS1 and Notch-1 overexpression. MiR-34a played an opposite role and reduced the effects of FEZF1-AS1 and Notch-1 overexpression.Conclusion: FEZF1-AS1 may sponge miR-34a to upregulate Notch-1 in GBM, thereby promoting cancer cell invasion and migration.Keywords: glioblastoma, FEZF1-AS1, miR-34a, Notch-1

To improve the corrosion resistance of steel wires, a uniform thin layer of bulk metallic glass alloy with different compositions of (Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5)100-xNbx (x=0, 3, 5, 8 at%) was coated on the surface of Q195 steel wires by a newly developed continuous coating process. Phase analysis results show that the coating is mainly composed of metallic glass alloy and some other intermetallics. The potentiodynamic polarization tests indicate that the steel wires with metallic glass coating show passivation behavior, and have higher pitting potential and lower corrosion current density than Q195 steel wires. With the increment of Nb content, the passivation region of the metallic glass-coated steel wires become wider while pitting potential is increased. As shown in composition analysis results, it may be attributed to the addition of Nb which has properties of easy passivation and stabilizing the passivation elements of Zr and Ti

The x wt% graphene–Ti composites (x = 0, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were obtained using the powder metallurgy method. The X-ray diffraction results demonstrated that the peak intensity of graphene increased monotonically with increasing graphene content. Furthermore, the number of grain boundary and interface between graphene and matrix increased as graphene increased, which led to a sharp rise of thermal resistances. The thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity of composites initially decreased drastically with addition of graphene, but then increased with increasing graphene content from 0.2 to 0.4 wt%. This phenomenon was connected with the graphene content and the characteristics of Ti matrix (pores, grain boundary and interface between graphene and matrix). The variation of the compressive strength of composites was attributed to the interaction effects of the average grain size of the Ti matrix (d m) and the volume fraction (V f) and aspect ratio (λ) of graphene.
