- Abstract
© 2017 Elsevier Ltd The tight reservoir of the Lucaogou Formation in the Jimsar sag, located in the southeastern Junggar Basin, northwest China, has been investigated for its great potential tight oil resources. In this study, petrography and mineralogy, pore microstructures, and pore size distributions of the samples collected from nine wells, were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), total organic carbon (TOC), thin sections and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The major rock types were identified as dolomite and siltstone, which had different pore type assemblages and various pore size distribution patterns. Based on the pore origin, pores were identified as: primary mineral pores, dissolved mineral pores, primary organic matter pores and secondary organic matter pores. Their sizes followed a power law distribution, regardless of lithological variability or SEM magnification. However, the power law exponent D was associated with lithology and diagenesis as well as hydrocarbon generation. In dolomite, the decrease in dolomite content and the increase in dolomite particle size were commonly in accordance with the decrease in the power law exponent D. Compaction and cementation were the principal diagenetic processes that had a crucial effect on the pore size distribution with a large D equal to 2.77. In siltstone, the influence of various pore types on the pore size distribution was controlled by diagenesis, in which case dissolution and cementation were compensating for their influence with a fluctuating power law exponent D ranging from 1.5 to 2.7.

In this paper we report on the observations of TeV gamma ray sources performed by the air shower de- tector ARGO-YBJ. The objects studied in this work are the blazar Markarian 421 and the extended galactic source MGROJ1908+06, monitored during 2 years of operation. Mrk421 has been detected by ARGO-YBJ with a statisti- cal significance of 11 standard deviations. The observed TeV emission was highly variable, showing large enhance- ments of the flux during active periods. The study of the spectral behaviour during flares revealed a positive correla- tion of the hardness with the flux, as already reported in the past by the Whipple telescope, suggesting that this is a long term property of the source. ARGO-YBJ observed a strong correlation between TeV gamma rays and the X-ray flux measured by RXTM/ASM and SWIFT/BAT during the whole period, with a time lag compatible with zero, supporting the one-zone SSC model to describe the emission mechanism. MGROJ1908+06 has been detected by ARGO-YBJ with 5 standard deviation of significance. From our data the source appears extended and the measured extension is ext=0.48 +0.26 0.28 , in agreement with a previous HESS obser- vation. The average flux is in marginal agreement with that reported by MILAGRO, but significantly higher than that ob- tained by HESS, suggesting a possible flux variability. The large field of view ( 2 sr) and the high duty cycle allow a continuous monitoring of the sky in the declination band from 0 to 70 . In this paper we report on the ob- servations of two bright gamma ray sources, performed dur- ing 2 years: the blazar Mrk421 and the extended galactic source MGROJ1908+06.

Cosmic ray antiprotons provide an important probe for the study of cosmic-ray propagation in the interstellar space and to investigate the existence of Galactic dark matter. Cosmic rays are hampered by the Moon, therefore a deficit of cosmic rays in its direction is expected (the so-called Moon shadow). The Earth–Moon system acts as a magnetic spectrometer. In fact, due to the geomagnetic field the center of the Moon shifts westward by an amount depending on the primary cosmic ray energy. Paths of primary antiprotons are therefore deflected in an opposite sense in their way to the Earth. This effect allows, in principle, the search of antiparticles in the opposite direction of the observed Moon shadow. The ARGO-YBJ experiment, in stable data taking since November 2007 with an energy threshold of a few 100s of GeV, is observing the Moon shadow with high statistical significance. Using about 1 year data, an upper limit of the p ¯ / p flux ratio in the few-TeV energy region is set to a few percent with a confidence level of 90%.

The measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum, in particular for individual species of nuclei, is an important tool to investigate cosmic ray production and propagation mechanisms. The determination of the ``knees'' in the spectra of different species remains one of the main challenges in cosmic ray physics. In fact, experimental results are still conflicting. In this paper we report a measurement of the mixed proton and helium energy spectrum, obtained with the combined data of the ARGO-YBJ experiment and a wide field of view Cherenkov telescope, a prototype of the future LHAASO experiment. By means of a multiparameter technique, we have selected a high-purity proton plus helium sample. The reconstructed energy resolution is found to be about 25% throughout the investigated energy range from 100 TeV to 3 PeV, with a systematic uncertainty in the absolute energy scale of 9.7%. The found energy spectrum can be fitted with a broken power-law function, with a break at the energy ${\mathrm{E}}_{k}=700\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}230(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}70(\mathrm{sys})\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$, where the spectral index changes from $\ensuremath{-}2.56\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05$ to $\ensuremath{-}3.24\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.36$. The statistical significance of the observed spectral break is 4.2 standard deviations.

ARGO-YBJ is a full coverage layer of Resistive Plate Counters (RPCs) covering an area of about 5.800 m 2 to be installed at the YangBaJing Laboratory (Tibet, China) at 4.300 m a.s.l . The DAQ system is based on a Central Station which receives the detector information from distributed readout electronics. Data from each RPC are acquired from a Receiver Card which reads out and digitizes the space and time information from 10 pick-up pads and gives out the pad multiplicity for trigger purposes. The Receiver Cards are hosted in Local Stations which Group 12 RPCs. On trigger occurrence, each Local Station sends the collected data to the Central Station. Both the detector and the electronics allow 1 ns accuracy in time measurements. In this work a detailed description of the Local Station and the Trigger System are presented.

- Abstract
The High Energy cosmic-Radiation Detection (HERD) facility is one of several space astronomy payloads onboard China's Space Station, which is planned for operation starting around 2025 for about 10 years. The main scientific objectives of HERD are searching for signals of dark matter annihilation products, precise cosmic electron (plus positron) spectrum and anisotropy measurements up to 10 TeV, precise cosmic ray spectrum and composition measurements up to the knee energy, and high energy gamma-ray monitoring and survey. HERD is composed of a 3-D cubic calorimeter (CALO) surrounded by microstrip silicon trackers (STKs) from five sides except the bottom. CALO is made of about 7,500 cubes of LYSO crystals, corresponding to about 55 radiation lengths and 3 nuclear interaction lengths, respectively. The top STK microstrips of six X-Y layers are sandwiched with tungsten converters to make precise directional measurements of incoming electrons and gamma-rays. In the baseline design, each of the four side STKs is made of only three layers microstrips. All STKs will also be used for measuring the charge and incoming directions of cosmic rays, as well as identifying back scattered tracks. With this design, HERD can achieve the following performance: energy resolution of 1% for electrons and gamma-rays beyond 100 GeV and 20% for protons from 100 GeV to 1 PeV; electron/proton separation power better than 10-5; effective geometrical factors of >3 m2sr for electron and diffuse gamma-rays, >2 m2sr for cosmic ray nuclei. R&D is under way for reading out the LYSO signals with optical fiber coupled to image intensified IsCMOS and CALO prototype of 250 LYSO crystals., QC 20181214

Tin oxide (SnO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures are widely studied because of their peculiar physical and chemical properties and the large number of possible application fields. Surface functionalization of these materials is a very important topic because it is a powerful tool for modifying or tuning their properties, in order to better match the device requests. For example, palladium/palladium oxide (Pd/PdO) nanoparticles are often used to enhance selectivity of chemoresistive gas sensing properties of metal-oxide nanostructures. SnO2 nanowires and ZnO nanotetrapods have been grown on large areas by a combination of metal evaporation and controlled oxidation, while a MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) process has been chosen in order to deposit Pd/PdO nanoparticles on the surface of the obtained oxide nanostructures. Samples morphology, structure and composition have been studied by means of SEM and TEM microscopy, EDS microanalysis and X-Ray diffraction. The different results, obtained as a function of the synthesis and annealing parameters, are discussed focusing the attention to the experimental conditions that allowed the authors to obtain an optimal “spotted” coverage of oxide nanostructures, which is often required for gas sensing application. The measurement of the anisotropies of cosmic ray arrival direction provides important informations on the propagation mechanisms and on the identification of their sources. In this paper we report the observation of anisotropy regions at different angular scales. In particular, the observation of a possible anisotropy on scales between $\sim$ 10 $^{\circ}$ and $\sim$ 30 $^{\circ}$ suggests the presence of unknown features of the magnetic fields the charged cosmic rays propagate through, as well as potential contributions of nearby sources to the total flux of cosmic rays. Evidence of new weaker few-degree excesses throughout the sky region $195^{\circ}\leq$ R.A. $\leq 315^{\circ}$ is reported for the first time., Talk given at 12th TAUP Conference 2011, 5-9 September 2011, Munich, Germany

Cosmic ray antiprotons provide an important probe for the study of cosmic ray propagation in the interstellar space and to investigate the existence of Galactic dark matter. The ARGO-YBJ experiment is observing the Moon shadow with high statistical significance at an energy threshold of a few hundred GeV. Using all the data collected until November 2009, we set two upper limits on the p ¯ / p flux ratio: 5% at an energy of 1.4 TeV and 6% at 5 TeV with a confidence level of 90%. In the few-TeV range the ARGO-YBJ results are the lowest available, useful to constrain models for antiproton production in antimatter domains.

On behalf of the ARGO-YBJ Collaboration Abstract. We report on the search for Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the energy range 1 100 GeV in coincidence with the prompt emission detected by satellites, using the Astro- physical Radiation Ground-based Observatory at YangBa- Jing (ARGO-YBJ). With its big active surface ( 6700 m 2 ) and large field of view ( 2 sr) the ARGO-YBJ air shower detector is particularly suitable to detect unpredictable and short duration events such as GRBs. The search has been performed using the single particle technique in time coinci- dence with satellite detections both for single events and for the piling up of all the GRBs in time and in phase. Between November 2004 and June 2010 115 GRBs, de- tected by different satellites (mainly Swift and Fermi), oc- curred within the field of view of ARGO-YBJ. For 94 of these we searched for a counterpart in the ARGO-YBJ data finding no statistically significant emission. Search methods and results are discussed.

Cosmic ray physics in the 10 12 –10 15 eV primary energy range is among the main scientific goals of the ARGO-YBJ experiment. The detector, located at the Cosmic Ray Observatory of Yangbajing (Tibet, P.R. China) at 4300 m a.s.l., is a full coverage Extensive Air Shower array consisting of a carpet of Resistive Plate Chambers of about 6000 m 2 . The apparatus layout, performance and location offer a unique possibility to make a deep study of several characteristics of the hadronic component of the cosmic ray flux in an energy window marked by the transition from direct to indirect measurements. In this work we will focus on the experimental results concerning the measurements of the primary cosmic ray energy spectrum and of the proton-air cross-section. The all-particle spectrum has been measured, by using a bayesian unfolding technique, in the 1–100 TeV energy region. The proton-air cross-section has been measured at the same energies, by exploiting the cosmic ray flux attenuation for different atmospheric depths (i.e. zenith angles). The total proton–proton cross-section has then been estimated at center of mass energies between 70 and 500 GeV, where no accelerator data are currently available.

""ARGO-YBJ is an extensive air shower detector located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 ma.s.l., 606 g cm^−2 atmospheric depth, Tibet, China).. It is made by a single layer of Resistive Plate Chambers. (RPCs, total surface ~ 6700 m^2) grouped into 153 units. called “clusters”. The low energy threshold of the experiment is obtained using the ”scaler operation mode”, counting all the particles hitting the detector without reconstruction of the shower size and arrival direction. For each cluster the signals generated by these particles are put in coincidence in a narrow time window (150 ns) and read by four independent. scaler channels, giving the counting rates of channel. >= 1, >= 2, >= 3 and >= 4 hits. The study of these counting. rates pointed out a different behavior of channel >= 1. respect to the higher multiplicity channels: while the MC simulations can account fairly well for the coincident counting. rates, the expectation for channel >= 1 is sensibly less. than the measured value. Moreover, the regression coefficient with the atmospheric pressure for channel >= 1 is also. about half of the value measured for the coincident counting rates: seemingly half of these counts did not cross the atmosphere. Measurements of the natural radioactivity background. in the air of the detector hall and a MC simulation to. estimate its contribution on our counting rates are presented and discussed.""

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is an Extensive Air Shower (EAS) array which combines high altitude location and full coverage active area in order to reach low energy threshold at a level of few hundred of GeV. The large field of view (≈ 2 sr ) and the high duty cycle (≥ 90%) allow the continuous monitoring of the sky searching for unknown sources and unpredictable events, such as flares in blazar emissions and high energy Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). In this paper I will briefly report on the detector performance and on some preliminary results achieved in γ-ray astronomy.

Gamma ray source detection above 30 TeV is an encouraging approach for finding galactic cosmic ray origins. All sky survey for gamma ray sources using wide field of view detector is essential for population accumulation for various types of sources above 100 GeV. To target the goals, the ARGO-YBJ experiment has been established. Significant progresses have been made in the experiment. A large air shower detector array in an area of 1 km2 is proposed to boost the sensitivity. Hybrid detections with multi-techniques will allow a good discrimination between different types of primary particles, including photons and protons, thus enable an energy spectrum measurement for individual species. Fluorescence light detector array will extend the spectrum measurement to 100 PeV and higher where the second knee is located. An energy scale determined by balloon experiments at 10 TeV will be propagated to ultra high energy cosmic ray experiments.

In 2008 the blazar Markarian 421 entered a very active phase and was one of the brightest sources in the sky at TeV energies, showing frequent flaring episodes. Using the data of ARGO-YBJ, a full coverage air shower detector located at Yangbajing (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, China), we monitored the source at gamma ray energies E > 0.3 TeV during the whole year. The observed flux was variable, with the strongest flares in March and June, in correlation with X-ray enhanced activity. While during specific episodes the TeV flux could be several times larger than the Crab Nebula one, the average emission from day 41 to 180 was almost twice the Crab level, with an integral flux of (3.6 +-0.6) 10^-11 photons cm^-2 s^-1 for energies E > 1 TeV, and decreased afterwards. This paper concentrates on the flares occurred in the first half of June. This period has been deeply studied from optical to 100 MeV gamma rays, and partially up to TeV energies, since the moonlight hampered the Cherenkov telescope observations during the most intense part of the emission. Our data complete these observations, with the detection of a signal with a statistical significance of 3.8 standard deviations on June 11-13, corresponding to a gamma ray flux about 6 times larger than the Crab one above 1 TeV. The reconstructed differential spectrum, corrected for the intergalactic absorption, can be represented by a power law with an index alpha = -2.1 extending up to several TeV. The spectrum slope is fully consistent with previous observations reporting a correlation between the flux and the spectral index, suggesting that this property is maintained in different epochs and characterizes the source emission processes., Accepted for publication on ApJL

The ARGO-YBJ experiment, installed at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (Tibet, China), at 4300 m a.s.l., is a detector 100x110m2 large, made by a layer of Resistive Plate Counters (RPCs) consisting of a central carpet with almost full coverage extending over an area of about 5.500 m2, surrounded by a guard ring with partial coverage. The high space-time granularity, the full-coverage technique and the high altitude location make this detector a unique device for a detailed study of the atmospheric shower characteristics with an energy threshold of a few hundred GeV. These properties in addition to the large field of view and the high duty cycle enable the ARGO-YBJ experiment to monitor the sky in a continuous way. Results have been reached in a wide variety of fields ranging from Gamma Astronomy, to Solar Physics, from Cosmic Rays composition to hadronic interactions and proton-antiproton ratio. A summary of all these results will be presented and reviewed.

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is an Extensive Air Shower detector which combines high altitude location (Tibet, People's Republic of China, 4300 m a.s.l.) and full coverage with Resistive Plate Counters, resulting in an energy threshold of a few hundred GeV. The large field of view (~2 sr) and high duty cycle allow the continuous monitoring of the Northern sky, searching for unknown sources and unpredictable events, such as flares in blazar emissions or high energy Gamma Ray Bursts. In this paper I will present some results obtained in γ-ray astronomy with the ARGO-YBJ experiment.

Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-astronomy and cosmic ray physics are the main goals of the ARGO-YBJ experiment. The detector is located in Tibet (People's Republic of China) and is a full coverage Extensive Air Shower array consisting of a carpet of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). Altitude and full coverage ensure an energy threshold of few hundreds of GeV for primary photons detected in shower mode, while the RPC time resolution gives a good pointing accuracy, thus allowing a high sensitivity to g -ray sources. The large eld of view (FoV) and the high duty-cycle allow the continuous monitor of the Northern sky in the declination band (-10, +70 degrees). The detector operates also in scaler mode in order to look for Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) signals in the range 1-100 GeV in coincidence with GRB detection by satellites. After some detail about the performances of the detector, the present results concerning gamma-astronomy will be presented.

In this work the results of p-air cross section measurements with the ARGO-YBJ experiment are reported. The analysis is based on the different flux attenuation for different atmospheric depths (i.e. zenith angles), by exploiting the detector capabilities in selecting the shower development stage by means of the size, hit density and lateral profile measurements. The systematic errors introduced by fluctuations in shower development and heavier primaries have been taken into account. The results can give useful insights on p-air interactions at energies where hadronic interaction models start to give significantly different expectations and allow to infer the p-p total cross section in the energy region ( s = 80 GeV − 500 GeV ) not covered by experiments at accelerators.

ARGO‐YBJ is the first EAS detector combining a very high mountain altitude (4300 m a.s.1.) to a “full coverage” detection surface. These features allow ARGO‐YBJ to work with an energy threshold as low as a few hundreds GeV. The high duty cycle and the large field of view (∼2 sr) make ARGO‐YBJ suitable to monitor the gamma ray sky, searching for unknown sources and unexpected events, like Active Galactic Nuclei flaring episodes or high energy Gamma Ray Bursts. In this paper we present the first observations of ARGO‐YBJ concerning gamma ray astronomy, in particular the detection of the Crab Nebula and the blazar Markarian 421 during the 2006 and 2008 outbursts, and the results of a search for Gamma Ray Bursts emission in the GeV energy range using the scaler mode technique.

n this paper, the effective area of the ARGO‐YBJ experiment to detect the gamma rays with energy range from 10 GeV to 1 TeV for different incident zenith angles (0,10,20,30,40 degrees) is given respectively. The optimal event selections to search for GRB counterparts with different cutoff energy models (Ecut = 100 GeV and 1 TeV) are studied. Using these selections and their corresponding angular resolutions the searches are done within two hours around the GRB trigger time via different time windows. Finally, the result for the 20 GRBs in the field of view of ARGO between July 2006 and July 2008 is presented, and the fluence upper limit for each GRB is set at 99% confidence level.

The ARGO‐YBJ experiment is a full coverage array made of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) operated in streamer mode to detect the extensive array showers (EASs). With large field of view (>2sr) and high duty cycle (>90%), the ARGO‐YBJ detector is the right ground‐based apparatus to detect VHE GRBs, while the high altitude (4300 m a.s.l) and scaler working mode enable it to detect GRBs in the GeV region as high energy follow‐up observation of satellites such as SWIFT. If a GRB signal is detected, the four scaler channels, which correspond to different energy thresholds, can provide further information on the energy spectrum and its cut‐off. More than 40 SWIFT GRBs were in ARGO‐YBJ field of view, no significant excess was detected till now.

The ARGO-YBJ detector is an extensive air shower array consisting of a carpet of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). The main scientific goal of this Chinese-Italian experiment is the observation of very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays from astrophysical sources. High altitude and full coverage ensure a low energy threshold (few hundreds of GeV for gamma-initiated showers). High duty-cycle and large field of view allow a continuous sky survey. The data collected with the central carpet during the detector debugging have been analysed. First results about detector performance, gamma astronomy and cosmic ray physics are presented.

Using the data taken by the ARGO-YBJ experiment (606 $g/cm^{2}$, Tibet, P.R.China) in the period of July to September 2006, the first measurement of EAS size spectrum in the range of $N_{e}=5\times10^{4}-5\times10^{6}$ is presented at different zenith angles. The attenuation and absorption lengths have been determined by applying different analysis methods. Furthermore the proton-air inelastic cross section around few hundrend TeV is explored by using the factor $k=\lambda_{abs}^{sim}/\lambda_{pair}^{sim}$

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is almost completely installed at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, P.R. China). The lower energy limit of the detector (E $\sim$ 1 GeV) is reached with the scaler mode, i.e., recording the single particle rate at fixed time intervals. In this technique, due to its high altitude location and large area ($\sim$ 6700 m$^2$), this experiment is the most sensitive among all present and past ground-based detectors. In the energy range under investigation, signals due to local (e.g. solar GLEs) and cosmological (e.g. GRBs) phenomena are expected as significant enhancements of the counting rate over the background. Results on the search for GRBs in coincidence with satellite detections are presented., Proc. of "The Multi-Messenger Approach To High Energy Gamma-Ray Sources" Workshop, Barcelona, July 4-7, 2006

Very high energy gamma ray astronomy is one of the scientific goals of the ARGO-YBJ experiment. The detector, which is located in Tibet (China) at 4300 m a.s.l., is a full coverage Extensive Air Shower array consisting of a carpet of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) of about 7000m 2 . The high altitude and the full coverage ensure a very low energy threshold (few hundreds of GeV for primary photons), while the detector time resolution ( σ t ≃ 1 ns ) gives a good pointing accuracy, thus allowing a high sensitivity to γ -ray sources, with a field of view of more than 2 sr and a duty cycle close to 100%. The detector layout, performance and location, offer a unique possibility to make also a deep study of several characteristics of the hadronic component of the cosmic ray flux up to energies of several hundreds of TeV. In particular, the topological structure of the shower, the lateral distribution, the energy spectrum and the space and time flux modulations can be measured with high sensitivity. Moreover, the use of a full coverage detector with a high space granularity gives detailed images of the shower front, that can be used to test different hypotheses on the cosmic ray interaction model, the shower development in the atmosphere and particle physics at very high energies. In this work the general layout of the detector and its performance will be described, together with the first results coming from the analysis of a data sample collected with a relevant fraction of the apparatus that is already in continuous data taking.

The ARGO-YBJ experiment has been designed to decrease the energy threshold of typical Extensive Air Shower arrays by exploiting the high altitude location (Tibet, People's Republic of China, 4300 m a.s.l.) and the full coverage. The lower energy limit of the detector (a few GeV) is reached with the single particle technique, recording the counting rate at fixed time intervals. We present first results concerning the search for emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts in coincidence with satellite detections

The ARGO‐YBJ experiment, under construction at the Yangbaijing Laboratory (P.R. China, 4300 m a.s.l.), is a full coverage detector of dimension 74 × 78 m2 made by a single layer of Resistive Plate Counters. About 10% of the final active area (∼ 700 m2) is in stable operation to check the detector performance and the reconstruction algorithms. In this paper the status of the experiment and the analysis of the first data are presented.
