History of medicine is a multidisciplinary major that a combination of majors from history to medicine is involved in. Therefore, both humanity and medical sciences groups have their own contributions to research in this field. Their different views on the subject cause some complications to touch history of medicine as research area. Then, it needs to make closer situation to dialogue between different parties in history of medicine. For this aim, as a post congress event of the 2nd International Congress on history of Medicine in Iran and Islam (Nov. 26-29, 2019 - Tehran), a series of workshops and panels, entitled "Methodology of Research in History of Medicine and Pharmacy" was held by hosting Research Office for the History of Persian Medicine, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in the Velayat Complex at Nov 30, 2019 (Figure 1). Anesthesia is one of the main issues in surgery and has progressed a lot since two centuries ago. The formal history of surgery indicates that beginning of anesthesia backs to the 18th century, but reviewing the history of medicine shows that pain management and anesthesia has a long history in ancient times. The word "anesthesia", comes from Greek language: an-(means: "without") and aisthēsis (means: "sensation"), the combination of which means the inhibition of sensation. The oldest reports show that the Sumerians maybe were the first people that they cultivated and harvested narcotic sedative like the opium Poppy as early as 3400 BC and used them as pain killers. There are some texts which show us that Greek and Mesopotamia's doctors prescribed alcoholic beverages before their surgeries. In the Byzantine time, physicians used an elixir known as "laudanum" that was a good sedative prior the patient's operation. Ancient Persia and China were as the biggest civilizations, of which medicine anesthesia had a great role in. Also, Persian and other Muslim physicians developed the field of anesthesiology in early medieval era which is called Islamic Golden Age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Corneal edema is an ophthalmic disorder which has two causes; one of them is increasing intraocular pressure that is the result of glaucoma and another reason is decompensation of endothelium that includes inflammatory and non-inflammatory types. Although, it is believed that this disorder is a new concept in medicine, reviewing the Avicenna’ Canon of Medicine (written in 1025AD) show that Avicenna described this disorder under the title of Saratan-e Cheshm. He has defined it and also described its sign and symptoms like exquisite pain, elongation of eye vessels, needle irritation, and redness of the eye, headache, anorexia, and hurt from looking at the things have humility. Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the health problems in the world. It is necessary to develop new treatment procedure for control of this disease. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of Zofa (Nepeta bracteata Benth) on AR patients. Materials and Methods: In this double-blind randomized clinical trial study, 71 patients (37 patients in treatment and 34 in placebo group) participated. In treatment group, N. bracteata syrup (NBS) was used for 4 weeks as three times a day. The efficacy of the drug regarding AR symptoms (rhinorrhea, sneezing, nasal obstruction, itchy nose, and ocular symptoms) were evaluated through a visual analog scale (VAS) by 0-10 before administration and at the end of the whole treatment period. The collected information was entered in the SPSS software (version 18) and was analyzed using the Fisher's exact test, Chi-square test, independent sample t-test, and paired sample test. Results: The improvement of AR symptoms in the group receiving NBS was significantly higher compared to control group (4.73 ± 1.84 vs. 0.38 ± 2.06; P < 0.0001). Furthermore, the mean of total VAS before and after the treatment (in case group) was 7.10 ± 1.92 and 2.37 ± 1.76, respectively (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that N. bracteata has significant effects on improving the symptoms of AR. Hence, it can be a good alternative to AR symptoms relief. Dizziness and vertigo are the most common complaints of patients that has a high economic burden on the health system. In modern medicine, treatment for dizziness and vertigo consists of chemical pharmacological therapy. Although these drugs are useful in controlling the disease, their side effects and inefficiency in full control of the disease require the use of complementary medicine in this field. Persian medicine consists of valuable experiences of Persian medicine scholars based on the theory of humors and temperaments. In Persian medicine, 2 types of disease are presented: dizziness (sadar) and vertigo (dovar). Persian medicine physicians expressed a different mechanism of action than modern medicine for these diseases. They believed that accumulation of abnormal humors, reeh (normal bloating) or causative pathologic substances, is the basic cause of sadar and dovar and that the most important treatment is cleansing the body, particularly the head from accumulated substances by bloodletting methods.
