Abstract

Context.Keplerian accretion discs around massive black holes (MBHs) are gravitationally unstable beyond a few hundredths of a parsec, and they should collapse to form stars. It has indeed been shown recently that an accretion/star formation episode took place a few million years ago in the Galactic center (GC). This raises the question of how the disc can survive in AGN and quasars and continue to transport matter towards the black hole.

Abstract

We discuss the possibility that astrophysical accretion disks are dynamically unstable to non-axisymmetric disturbances with characteristic scales much smaller than the vertical scale height. The instability is studied using three methods: one based on the energy integral, which allows the determination of a sufficient condition of stability, one using a WKB approach, which allows the determination of the necessary and sufficient condition for instability and a last one by numerical solution. This linear instability occurs in any inviscid stably stratified differential rotating fluid for rigid, stress-free or periodic boundary conditions, provided the angular velocity Ωdecreases outwards with radius r. At not too small stratification, its growth rate is a fraction of Ω. The influence of viscous dissipation and thermal diffusivity on the instability is studied numerically, with emphasis on the case when ${\rm d} \ln \Omega / {\rm d} \ln r =-3/2$(Keplerian case). Strong stratification and large diffusivity are found to have a stabilizing effect. The corresponding critical stratification and Reynolds number for the onset of the instability in a typical disk are derived. We propose that the spontaneous generation of these linear modes is the source of turbulence in disks, especially in weakly ionized disks.

Abstract

Context. Rotational splittings are currently measured for several main sequence stars and a large number of red giants with the space mission Kepler. This will provide stringent constraints on rotation profiles. Aims. Our aim is to obtain seismic constraints on the internal transport and surface loss of the angular momentum of oscillating solar-like stars. To this end, we study the evolution of rotational splittings from the pre-main sequence to the red-giant branch for stochastically excited oscillation modes. Methods. We modified the evolutionary code CESAM2K to take rotationally induced transport in radiative zones into account. Linear rotational splittings were computed for a sequence of 1.3 M⊙ models. Rotation profiles were derived from our evolutionary models and eigenfunctions from linear adiabatic oscillation calculations. Results. We find that transport by meridional circulation and shear turbulence yields far too high a core rotation rate for red-giant models compared with recent seismic observations. We discuss several uncertainties in the physical description of stars that could have an impact on the rotation profiles. For instance, we find that the Goldreich-Schubert-Fricke instability does not extract enough angular momentum from the core to account for the discrepancy. In contrast, an increase of the horizontal turbulent viscosity by 2 orders of magnitude is able to significantly decrease the central rotation rate on the red-giant branch. Conclusions. Our results indicate that it is possible that the prescription for the horizontal turbulent viscosity largely underestimates its actual value or else a mechanism not included in current stellar models of low mass stars is needed to slow down the rotation in the radiative core of red-giant stars. 139. Hydrodynamic stability and mode coupling in Keplerian flows: local strato-rotational analysis

Abstract

Aims.We present a qualitative analysis of key (but yet unappreciated) linear phenomena in stratified hydrodynamic Keplerian flows: (i) the occurrence of a vortex mode, as a consequence of strato-rotational balance, with its transient dynamics; (ii) the generation of spiral-density waves (also called inertia-gravity or g? waves) by the vortex mode through linear mode coupling in shear flows.Methods.Non-modal analysis of linearized Boussinesq equations were written in the shearing sheet approximation of accretion disk flows.Results.It is shown that the combined action of rotation and stratification introduces a new degree of freedom, vortex mode perturbation, which is in turn linearly coupled with the spiral-density waves. These two modes are jointly able to extract energy from the background flow, and they govern the disk dynamics in the small-scale range. The transient behavior of these modes is determined by the non-normality of the Keplerian shear flow. Tightly leading vortex mode perturbations undergo substantial transient growth, then, becoming trailing, inevitably generate trailing spiral-density waves by linear mode coupling. This course of events ? transient growth plus coupling ? is particularly pronounced for perturbation harmonics with comparable azimuthal and vertical scales, and it renders the energy dynamics similar to the 3D unbounded plane Couette flow case.Conclusions.Our investigation strongly suggests that the so-called bypass concept of turbulence, which has been recently developed by the hydrodynamic community for spectrally stable shear flows, can also be applied to Keplerian disks. This conjecture may be confirmed by appropriate numerical simulations that take the vertical stratification and consequent mode coupling into account in the high Reynolds number regime.

140. Rotational mixing in stellar radiation zones: successes and weaknesses

Abstract

The common way to build stellar models is to treat the radiation zones as inert, stable regions, in contrast with the well mixed convection zones. This allows to account for the main features of stellar evolution, such as the main sequence and the existence of red giants. But there are many indications that some mixing occurs within the radiation zones, and that it has an impact on the later stages. 
Manuel Forestini was one the first to undertake the implementation of such mixing in his stellar code, and thus to go beyond the standard model. Here I will briefly describe the mixing processes that are likely to operate in stellar radiation zones, as we understand them today, and discuss how well they account for the observed properties of stars.

Due to radiative acceleration and gravitational settling, stars would display vast differences in their surface composition, if these were not smoothed out, at least partly, by some competing processes. Possible mechanisms have been suggested and examined by Georges Michaud and his collaborators: mass loss, turbulent mixing and meridional circulation. They will be discussed here in the light of more recent developments.

143. Characterization of Volatile Organic Emissions and Wastes from a Swine Production Facility

Abstract

Analytical methods for monitoring the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, for defining atmospheric transport coefficients, and for monitoring solution phase chemistry have been developed to define processes regulating emission of malodorous and other VOCs from a high odor swine production facility. Of the 40 organic compounds identified in liquid and outdoor air samples from the swine production facility, 27 VOCs were confirmed to contribute to decreased air quality in the vicinity of the facility. Specifically, C2 through C9 organic acids demonstrated the greatest potential for decreased air quality, since these compounds exhibited the highest transport coefficients and highest airborne concentrations. Flux measurements suggested that the total rate of nonmethane VOC emissions from the deep basin swine waste storage system was 500‐ to 5700‐fold greater than established nonmethane VOC fluxes from nonanthropogenic sources. The volatilization rate of malodorous and other VOCs from the stored swine waste was positively correlated with wind velocity between 0.2 and 9.4 m s−1, and a maximum concentration of VOCs present in the air was observed to occur at a wind velocity of 3.6 m s−1. Experimental Henry's law coefficients adequately predicted the transport efficiency observed for some of the VOC emissions measured from air samples taken at 0, 25, and 100 m from the swine waste storage basin; however, results indicated that laboratory‐based extraction procedures, currently used to estimate malodor potential for swine slurry samples, provide an inaccurate representation of malodorous and other airborne VOCs actually present in the air near swine production facilities.

144. Palindrome resolution and recombination in the mammalian germ line

Abstract

Genetic instability is promoted by unusual sequence arrangements and DNA structures. Hairpin DNA structures can form from palindromes and from triplet repeats, and they are also intermediates in V(D)J recombination. We have measured the genetic stability of a large palindrome which has the potential to form a one-stranded hairpin or a two-stranded cruciform structure and have analyzed recombinants at the molecular level. A palindrome of 15.3 kb introduced as a transgene was found to be transmitted at a normal Mendelian ratio in mice, in striking contrast to the profound instability of large palindromes in prokaryotic systems. In a significant number of progeny mice, however, the palindromic transgene is rearranged; between 15 and 56% of progeny contain rearrangements. Rearrangements within the palindromic repeat occur both by illegitimate and homologous, reciprocal recombination. Gene conversion within the transgene locus, as quantitated by a novel sperm fluorescence assay, is also elevated. Illegitimate events often take the form of an asymmetric deletion that eliminates the central symmetry of the palindrome. Such asymmetric transgene deletions, including those that maintain one complete half of the palindromic repeat, are stabilized so that they cannot undergo further illegitimate rearrangements, and they also exhibit reduced levels of gene conversion. By contrast, transgene rearrangements that maintain the central symmetry continue to be unstable. Based on the observed events, we propose that one mechanism promoting the instability of the palindrome may involve breaks generated at the hairpin structure by a hairpin-nicking activity, as previously detected in somatic cells. Because mammalian cells are capable of efficiently repairing chromosome breaks through nonhomologous processes, the resealing of such breaks introduces a stabilizing asymmetry at the center of the palindrome. We propose that the ability of mammalian cells to eliminate the perfect symmetry in a palindromic sequence may be an important DNA repair pathway, with implications regarding the metabolism of palindromic repeats, the mutability of quasipalindromic triplet repeats, and the early steps in gene amplification events.

Abstract

The solar magnetism is no more considered as a purely superficial phenomenon. The SoHO community has shown that the length of the solar cycle depends on the transition region between radiation and convection. Nevertheless, the internal solar (stellar) magnetism stays poorly known. Starting in 2008, the American instrument HMI/SDO and the European microsatellite PICARD will enrich our view of the Sun-Earth relationship. Thus obtaining a complete MHD solar picture is a clear objective for the next decades and it requires complementary observations of the dynamics of the radiative zone. For that ambitious goal, space prototypes are being developed to improve gravity mode detection. The Sun is unique to progress on the topology of deep internal magnetic fields and to understand the complex mechanisms which provoke photospheric and coronal magnetic changes and possible longer cycles important for human life. We propose the following roadmap in Europe to contribute to this "impressive" revolution in Astronomy and in our Sun-Earth relationship: SoHO (1995-2007), PICARD (2008-2010), DynaMICS (2009-2017) in parallel to SDO (2008-2017) then a world-class mission located at the L1 orbit or above the solar poles., 10 pages, 8 figures, will appear in the proceedings of 2005 ESLAB symposium 19-21 April 2005
