The laterality difference in the occipitotemporal region between Chinese (bilaterality) and alphabetic languages (left laterality) has been attributed to their difference in visual appearance. However, these languages also differ in orthographic transparency. To disentangle the effect of orthographic transparency from visual appearance, we trained subjects to read the same artificial script either as an alphabetic (i.e., transparent orthography) or a logographic (i.e., nontransparent orthography) language. Consistent with our previous results, both types of phonological training enhanced activations in the left fusiform gyrus. More interestingly, the laterality in the fusiform gyrus (especially the posterior region) was modulated by the orthographic transparency of the artificial script (more left-lateralized activation after alphabetic training than after logographic training). These results provide an alternative account (i.e., orthographic transparency) for the laterality difference between Chinese and alphabetic languages, and may have important implications for the role of the fusiform in reading.

Previous functional neuroimaging studies have shown that the left mid-fusiform cortex plays a critical role in reading. However, there is very limited research relating this region's anatomical structure to reading performance either in native or second language. Using structural MRI and three reading tasks (Chinese characters, English words, and alphabetic pseudowords) and a non-reading task (visual-auditory learning), this study investigated the contributions of the left mid-fusiform cortical thickness to reading in a large sample of 226 Chinese subjects. Results showed that the cortical thickness in the left mid-fusiform gyrus was positively correlated with performance on all three reading tasks but not with the performance on the non-reading task. Our findings provide structural evidence for the left mid-fusiform cortex as the "gateway" region for reading Chinese and English. The absence of the association between the left mid-fusiform cortical thickness and non-reading performance implied the specific role of this area in reading skills, not in general language skills.

Response inhibition refers to the suppression of inappropriate or irrelevant responses. It has a central role in executive functions, and has been linked to a wide spectrum of prevalent neuropsychiatric disorders. Increasing evidence from neuropharmacological studies has suggested that gene variants in the norepinephrine neurotransmission system make specific contributions to response inhibition. This study genotyped five tag single-nucleotide polymorphisms covering the whole alpha-2B-adrenergic receptor (ADRA2B) gene and investigated their associations with response inhibition in a relatively large healthy Chinese sample (N=421). The results revealed significant genetic effects of the ADRA2B conserved haplotype polymorphisms on response inhibition as measured by stop-signal reaction time (SSRT) (F(2, 418)=5.938, p=0.003). Individuals with the AAGG/AAGG genotype (n=89; mean SSRT=170.2 ms) had significantly shorter SSRTs than did those with either the CCAC/AAGG genotype (n=216; mean SSRT=182.4 ms; uncorrected p=0.03; corrected p=0.09) or the CCAC/CCAC genotype (n=116; mean SSRT=195.8 ms; corrected p

Using unfamiliar and meaningless pictographs that varied in their degree of similarity to Chinese characters, the current study tested whether the early electrophysiological response was modulated by character likeness. We measured P100 and N170 while 20 native Chinese speakers were viewing Chinese characters, drawings of objects, and pictographs. Comparisons across the three categories of stimuli showed that pictographs elicited a smaller N170 amplitude than did Chinese characters and a stronger N170 amplitude than did objects, but did not differ in the P100 amplitude from the other two categories. Within the category of pictographs, stimuli with a higher degree of character likeness elicited larger N170 amplitudes and shorter N170 peak latencies, and this effect was again not observed in P100. These results suggest that N170 is sensitive to visual stimuli's character likeness even though they are unfamiliar pictographs with no meanings or sounds.

[Objectives] Compared with trimarans, the trimaran small waterplane area center hull (TriSWACH)has a larger underwater ship and the waterline surface is greatly reduced,therefore,the seakeeping law of ordinary trimaran is not completely applicable to TriSWACH. The seakeeping performance of the TriSWACH is still to be researched.[Methods] As model tests are time-consuming, expensive,and demanding in terms of the environment required,it is difficult to test and analyze all schemes. Therefore, STAR-CCM + is used to simulate the viscous flow around the hull. Firstly, considering the influence of grid setting and flow field model selection,we verified the feasibility and reliability of STAR-CCM + for calculating the seakeeping performance of trimarans. Then,the variation law of the TriSWACH's seakeeping performance is analyzed with different side-hulls.[Results] The results show that the seakeeping performance of the TriSWACH is better than that of a trimaran when Fr=0.234 (low speed). The simulation of Fr=0.494-0.701(middle and high speed) is complicated. The seakeeping performance of the TriSWACH is better when the side-hull is placed closer to the ship bow.[Conclusions] The results can serve as a reference for TriSWACH design.

[Objectives] Due to its excellent seakeeping, rapidity and stability, Trimaran Small Waterplane Area Center Hull(TriSWACH)has an increasing number of applications in both civil vessels and warships. However, the laws of resistance of different submerged body shapes and side-hull configurations at different speeds still require research. As model tests are time-consuming and expensive, and cannot cover all potential hulls, numerical calculation based on STAR-CCM + is becoming increasingly preferred.[Methods] With the free surface effect consideration,STAR-CCM+ is validated to be practical for TriSWACH resistance prediction. The resistance performance is calculated with different side-hull configurations,including longitudinal and transverse,of circular submerged body shapes under the Fr series.[Results] As the results indicate,with the increase of speed,when the side-hull is arranged behind and moves closer to the main hull,the total resistance of TriSWACH is significantly lower than that of traditional trimarans,in the range of Fr=0.338~0.494.[Conclusions] The findings in this paper can provide useful references for future TriSWACH design.

Previous studies have identified the critical role of the left fusiform cortex in visual word form processing, learning, and memory. However, this so-called visual word form area's (VWFA) other functions are not clear. In this study, we used fMRI and the subsequent memory paradigm to examine whether the putative VWFA was involved in the processing and successful memory encoding of faces as well as words. Twenty-two native Chinese speakers were recruited to memorize the visual forms of faces and Chinese words. Episodic memory for the studied material was tested 3h after the scan with a recognition test. The fusiform face area (FFA) and the VWFA were functionally defined using separate localizer tasks. We found that, both within and across subjects, stronger activity in the VWFA was associated with better recognition memory of both words and faces. Furthermore, activation in the VWFA did not differ significantly during the encoding of faces and words. Our results revealed the important role of the so-called VWFA in face processing and memory and supported the view that the left mid-fusiform cortex plays a general role in the successful processing and memory of different types of visual objects (i.e., not limited to visual word forms).

Aims: Acute kidney injury (AKI) has been associated with a variety of neurological problems, while the neurobiological mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, we utilized resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs‐fMRI) to detect brain injury at an early stage and investigated the impact of microglia on the neuropathological mechanism of AKI. Methods: Rs‐fMRI data were collected from AKI rats and the control group with a 9.4‐Tesla scanner at 24, 48, and 72 h post administration of contrast medium or saline. The amplitude of low‐frequency fluctuations (ALFF) was then compared across the groups at each time course. Additionally, flow cytometry and SMART‐seq2 were employed to evaluate microglia. Furthermore, pathological staining and Western blot were used to analyze the samples. Results: MRI results revealed that AKI led to a decreased ALFF in the hippocampus, particularly in the 48 h and 72 h groups. Additionally, western blot suggested that AKI‐induced the neuronal apoptosis at 48 h and 72 h. Flow cytometry and confocal microscopy images demonstrated that AKI activated the aggregation of microglia into neurons at 24 h, with a strong upregulation of M1 polarization at 48 h and peaking at 72 h, accompanying with the release of proinflammatory cytokines. The ALFF value was strongly correlated with the proportion of microglia (|r| > 0.80, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that microglia aggregation and inflammatory factor upregulation are significant mechanisms of AKI‐induced neuronal apoptosis. We used fMRI to detect the alterations in hippocampal function, which may provide a noninvasive method for the early detection of brain injury after AKI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

People value the opportunity to exercise control over the environment or make their own choices. Recent studies have revealed that simply having the opportunity to make choices can facilitate memory performance, suggesting an interaction between reward (due to choice making) and memory systems. However, little is known about the electrophysiological basis of choice‐related memory. In the current study, we used scalp electroencephalography combined with a choice encoding task to examine the role of theta oscillations (which have been widely connected to reward and memory processing) in choice‐related memory formation. The encoding task had two conditions. In the choice condition, participants were asked to choose between two occluded memoranda by themselves, whereas in the fixed condition, the decision was made by the computer. Behavioral results showed the choice effect, with better performance in the choice condition than the fixed condition on the recognition test given after a 24‐h delay. Increases in theta power during an early latency of encoding period predicted successful memory formation in the choice condition, but not in the fixed condition. Furthermore, decreases in theta power during a late latency predicted successful memory formation in both the fixed and the choice conditions. Finally, we observed increased theta power in the choice condition compared to the fixed condition during an early latency of encoding period and decreased theta power in the choice condition compared to the fixed condition during a late latency. Our results suggest that theta oscillations play a significant role in choice‐related memory formation. This study explores the novel role of theta oscillations in shaping choice‐related memory formation. It uncovers distinct patterns of theta power during different latency phases of the encoding period. Specifically, in the choice condition, theta power during the early latency positively predicts subsequent memory performance, while during the late latency, it negatively predicts memory performance in both choice and fixed conditions. These findings advance our knowledge of active and motivational learning mechanisms by establishing a link between theta activity and the formation of choice‐based memories, thus highlighting their unique contributions beyond existing literature. Hawthorn leaves are a kind of widely used medicinal plant in China. The major ingredient, hawthorn leaves flavonoids (HLF), have cardiotonic, cardioprotective, and vascular protective effects. The study evaluated the protective role of HLF in cardiac remodelling and the underlying mechanisms under simulated microgravity by hindlimb unloading rats. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into control, HLF, HU (hindlimb unloading) and HU + HLF groups (n = 8). After HU and daily intragastric administration at the dose of 100 mg/kg/d for 8 weeks, cardiac function and structure were evaluated by biochemical indices and histopathology. We identified the main active compounds and mechanisms involved in the cardioprotective effects of HLF via bioinformatics and molecular docking analysis, and relative signalling pathway activity was verified by Western blot. HLF treatment could reverse the HU-induced decline in LV-EF (HU, 55.13% ± 0.98% vs. HU + HLF, 71.16% ± 5.08%), LV-FS (HU, 29.44% ± 0.67% vs. HU + HLF, 41.62% ± 4.34%) and LV mass (HU, 667.99 ± 65.69 mg vs. HU + HLF, 840.02 ± 73.00 mg). Furthermore, HLF treatment significantly increased NPRA expression by 135.39%, PKG by 51.27%, decreased PDE5A by 20.03%, NFATc1 by 41.68% and Rcan1.4 by 54.22%. HLF plays a protective effect on HU-induced cardiac remodelling by enhancing NPRA-cGMP-PKG pathway and suppressing the calcineurin-NFAT pathway, which provides a theoretical basis for use in clinical therapies. Microcystin (MC)-producing (MC+) and MC-free (MC−) Microcystis always co-exist and interact during Microcystis -dominated cyanobacterial blooms (MCBs), where MC+ Microcystis abundance and extracellular MC-content (EMC) determine the hazard extent of MCBs. The current study elucidated intraspecific interaction between MC+ and MC− Microcystis at various nitrogen (N) levels (0.5–50 mg/L) and how such N-mediated interaction impacted algicidal and EMC-inhibiting effect of luteolin, a natural bioalgicide. Conclusively, MC+ and MC− Microcystis were inhibited mutually at N-limitation (0.5 mg/L), which enhanced the algicidal and EMC-inhibiting effects of luteolin. However, at N-sufficiency (5–50 mg/L), MC− Microcystis promoted MC+ ecotype growth and dominance, and such intraspecific interaction induced the cooperative defense of two ecotypes, weakening luteolin's algicidal and EMC-inhibiting effects. Mechanism analyses further revealed that MC+ Microcystis in luteolin-stress co-culture secreted exopolymeric substances (EPSs) for self-protection against luteolin-stress and also released more EMC to induce EPS-production by MC− Microcystis as protectants, thus enhancing their luteolin-resistance and promoting their growth. This study provided novel ecological implications of MC− Microcystis toward MC+ ecotype in terms of assisting the dominant establishment of MC+ Microcystis and cooperative defense with MC+ ecotype against luteolin, which guided the application of bioalgicide (i.e. luteolin) for MCBs and MCs pollution mitigation in different eutrophication-degree waters. Achieving highly selective oxidation of aryl alkenes to aldehydes is of great significance in chemical industry. Herein, the performance of catalytic aryl alkene oxidation is enhanced via constructing a hierarchical fractal polyoxometalate‐based metal–organic framework (POM@MOF) containing hierarchical pores and layered surface structure, which improve the mass transfer efficiency of substrates and increase the accessibility to active POMs clusters. Accordingly, the activity of fractal POM@MOF is increased by 4.8 times compared with microporous counterpart in 4‐tert‐butylstyrene oxidation to aldehyde product. This work paves a way for designing efficient catalysts for selective oxidation of aryl alkenes via increasing the accessibility of active sites and broadening the diffusion channels by hierarchical construction.
