Diastereomeric meso- and d,l-bis(bicyclopropylidenyl) (5) were obtained upon oxidation with oxygen of a higher-order cuprate generated from lithiobicyclopropylidene (4) in 50 and 31 % yield, respectively. Their perdeuterated analogues meso-[D(14)]- and d,l-[D(14)]-5 were obtained along the same route from perdeuterated bicyclopropylidene [D(8)]-3 (synthesized in six steps in 7.4 % overall yield from [D(8)]-THF) in 20.5 % yield each. Dehalogenative coupling of 1,1-dibromo-2-cyclopropylcyclopropane (6) gave a mixture of all possible stereoisomers of 1,5-dicyclopropylbicyclopropylidene 16 in 69 % yield, from which (Z)-cis-16 was separated by preparative gas chromatography (26 % yield). The crystal structure of meso-5 looks like a superposition of the crystal structures of two outer bicyclopropylidene units (3) and one inner s-trans-bicyclopropyl unit, whereas the two outer cyclopropyl moieties adopt a gauche orientation with respect to the cyclopropane rings at the inner bicyclopropylidene units in (Z)-cis-16. Birch reduction with lithium in liquid ammonia of meso-5 and d,l-5 gave two pairs of diastereomeric quatercyclopropanes trans,trans-(R*,S*,R*, S*)-17/cis,trans-(R*,S*,R*,R*)-18 and trans,trans-(R*,S*,S*,R*)-19/cis,trans-(R*,S*,S*,S*)-20 in 97 and 76 % yield, respectively, in a ratio 9:1 for every pair. The latter diastereomer was also obtained as the sole product by Birch reduction of (Z)-cis-16 in 96 % yield. Under the same conditions, tetradecadeuterio analogues trans,trans-[D(14)]-(R*,S*,R*,S*)-17/cis,trans-[D(14)]-(R*, S*,R*,R*)-18 (8:1) and trans,trans-[D(14)]-(R*,S*,S*,R*)-19/cis,trans-[D(14)]-(R*,S*,S*,S*)-20 (12:1) were prepared from meso-[D(14)]-5 and d,l-[D(14)]-5 in 37 and 63 % yield, respectively. Reduction of meso-5 with diimine gave the cis,cis-quatercyclopropane (S*,S*,R*,R*)-21 as the main product (58 % yield) along with the cis,trans-diastereomer (S*,S*,R*,S*)-18 (29 % yield). Thus, five of the six possible diastereomeric quatercyclopropanes were obtained from meso-5, d,l-5, and (Z)-cis-16. The X-ray crystal structure analyses of trans,trans-(R*,S*,R*,S*)-17 and cis,cis-(S*,S*,R*,R*)-21 revealed for the both an unusual conformation in which the central bicyclopropyl unit adopts an s-trans-(antiperiplanar) orientation with phi=180.0 degrees , and the two terminal bicyclopropyl moieties adopt a synclinal conformation with phi=49.8 and 72.0 degrees , respectively. In solution the vicinal coupling constants (3)J(H,H) in trans,trans-(R*,S*,R*,S*)-[D(14)]-17, trans,trans-(R*,S*,S*,R*)-[D(14)]-19, trans,cis-(R*,S*,R*,R*)-[D(14)]-18 and trans,cis-(R*,S*,S*,S*)-[D(14)]-20 were found to be 4.1, 4.7, 5.9 and 5.9 Hz, respectively. This indicates a predominance of the all-gauche conformer in (R*,S*,R*,S*)-17 and a decreasing fraction of it in this sequence of the other diastereomers.

Flash vacuum pyrrolysis of vinyl epoxides provides cis-dihydrofuran carboxylic esters in good yields and diastereoselectivities, which, on base-promoted epimerisation afford the complementary trans series. The compounds provide a viable template for a Lewis acid promoted cyclisation to provide the 2,6-diaryl-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane core found in the furofuran series of natural lignans. This strategy is stereodivergent and can be controlled to provide the exo-exo, exo-endo or endo-endo stereochemistries. The approach has been exemplified in syntheses of the sesamyl furofurans (+/-)-epiasarinin and (+/-)-asarinin.

(P)-(+)-Hexaspiro[2.0.0.0. 0.0.2.1.1.1.1.1]pentadecane [(P)-17] as well as (M)-(-)- and (P)-(+)-octaspiro[2.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.2.1.1.1.1.1.1.1]nonadecanes [(M)- and (P)-25]-enantiomerically pure unbranched [7]- and [9]triangulanes-have been prepared starting from racemic THP-protected (methylenecyclopropyl)methanol 6. The relative configurations of all important intermediates as well as the absolute configurations of the key intermediates were established by X-ray crystal structure analyses. This new convergent approach to enantiomerically pure linear [n]triangulanes for n=7, 9 was also tested in two variants towards [15]triangulane. Some of the most prominent and unexpected features of the newly prepared compounds are the remarkable modes of self-assembly of the diols (P)-14, (E)-(3S,3'S,4S,4'S,5R,5'R)-21, (P)-(+)-22, and (E)-31 in the solid state through frameworks of intermolecular hydrogen bonds leading to, depending on the respective structure, nanotube- [(P)-14, (P)-(+)-22, and (E)-31], honeycomb-like structures [(E)-(3S,3'S,4S,4'S,5R,5'R)-21] or a supramolecular double helix [(P)-(+)- and (M)-(-)-22]. Liquid crystalline properties of the esters and ethers of the diols (P)-14, (P)-, and (M)-22 have also been tested. Although all of these [n]triangulanes have no chromophore which would lead to significant absorptions above 200 nm, they exhibit surprisingly high specific rotations even at 589 nm with [alpha](20)(D)=+672.9 (c=0.814 in CHCl(3)) for (P)-(+)-17, +909.9 (c=0.96 in CHCl(3)) for (P)-(+)-25, -890.5 (c=1.01 in CHCl(3)) for (M)-(-)-25, and -1302.5 (c=0.36 in CHCl(3)) for (M)-(-)-39, and the specific rotations increase drastically on going to shorter wavelengths. This outstanding rotatory power is in line with their rather rigid helical arrangement of sigma bonds, and accordingly these helically shaped unbranched [n]triangulanes may be termed "sigma-[n]helicenes", as they represent the sigma-bond analogues of the aromatic pi-[n]helicenes. Density functional theory (DFT) computations at the B3 LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory for the geometry optimization and time-dependent DFT for determining optical rotations with a triplet-zeta basis set (B3 LYP/TZVP) reproduce the optical rotatory dispersions (ORD) very well for the lower members (n=4, 5) of the sigma-[n]helicenes. For the higher ones (n=7, 9, 15) the computed specific rotations turn out increasingly larger than the experimental values. The remarkable increase of the specific rotation with an increasing number of three-membered rings is proportional neither to the molecular weight nor to the number of cyclopropane rings in these sigma-[n]helicenes.

[Reaction: see text]. Polyfunctional tetrahydropyrido[2,3-b]pyrazine scaffolds can be synthesized by sequential reaction of pentafluoropyridine with sodium phenylsulfinate and an appropriate diamine. The polyfunctionality possessed by the difluorinated tetrahydropyrido[2,3-b]pyrazine scaffolds was demonstrated in selected model reactions with nucleophiles to give access to various polysubstituted [6,6]-ring fused systems.

[reaction: see text] Representative polyfunctional tetrahydropyrido[3,4-b]pyrazine scaffolds have been synthesized very readily by a one-pot annelation reaction of pentafluoropyridine with appropriate diamines. The trifluorinated pyridopyrazine products react sequentially with various nucleophiles to give poly-substituted tetrahydropyridopyrazines, demonstrating the potential of the polyfluorinated ring fused pyridine system as a scaffold for the synthesis of previously inaccessible poly-substituted pyridopyrazine derivatives. This general approach has special relevance to the development of new chemical entities for the life science industries and particularly in the drug discovery arena, in which low molecular weight, polyfunctional heterocyclic derivatives are playing an increasingly important role.

Epoxidation of bullvalene (1) with a neutralized solution of Oxone gave racemic trisepoxide rac-6 in 93 % isolated yield. Its structure was examined by X-ray crystallography. The two enantiomers of 6 were separated by preparative HPLC and exhibited specific rotations of [alpha](25)(D)= +160, [alpha](25)(365)= +567 (c=0.946, CHCl(3)) for the firstly eluted and [alpha](25)(D)= -157, [alpha](25)(365)= -554 (c=0.986, CHCl3) for the secondly eluted enantiomer of 6. The geometry of (+)-6 and the absolute configuration of (-)-6 were determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis and anomalous diffraction, respectively. According to this, (-)-6 possesses (3R,5S,7S,9R,11R,13S)- and (+)-6 has (3S,5R,7R,9S,11S,13R)-configuration. Upon treatment with BF(3)Et(2)O at -78 degrees C, trisepoxide rac-6 rearranges with retention of the skeletal three-membered carbocycle to give the cage trisether rac-8, as proved by X-ray crystal structure analysis, in virtually quantitative yield. Enantiomers of rac-8 were separated by preparative HPLC and exhibited specific rotations of [alpha](25)(D)= +49, [alpha](25)(365)= +170 (c=1.01, CHCl3) (firstly eluting) and [alpha](25)(D)= -46, [alpha](25)(365)= -160 (c=1.02, CHCl(3)) (secondly eluting enantiomer). The absolute configuration of (-)-8 was determined by anomalous diffraction to be (1R,3R,7R,9R,11R,13R). DFT computations at the TD-B3 LYP/6-31+G(d,p)//B3 LYP/6-31+G(d) level of theory for (3R,5S,7S,9R,11R,13S)-6 and (1R,3R,7R,9R,11R,13R)-8 predicted specific rotations of -206.7 and -83.4, respectively. Acid-catalyzed isomerization of the enantiomerically pure (+)-6 proceeded without racemization to give exclusively (-)-8, and (-)-6 provided only (+)-8. Thus, this isomerization occurs with ring opening of the three C--O bonds in the epoxide moieties in the alpha-position relative to the three-membered carbocycle rather than in the beta-position.

The enthalpies of formation [Delta(g)] of tricyclo[8.2.2.2(4,7)]hexadeca-1(13),2,4(16),5,7(15),10(14),11-heptaene (2, 1,2-dehydro[2.2]paracyclophane or [2.2]paracyclophane-1-ene) and tricyclo[8.2.2.2(4,7)]hexadeca-1(13),2,4(16),5,7(15),8,10(14),11-octaene (3, 1,2,9,10-dehydro[2.2]paracyclophane or [2.2]paracyclophane-1,9-diene) have been determined by measuring their heats of combustion in a microcalorimeter and their heats of sublimation by the transpiration method. Values of the strain energies (SE) [SE(2) = 34.7 kcal mol(-)(1), SE(3) = 42.0 kcal mol(-)(1)] have been derived from the gas-phase heats of formation and are compared with those from MM3 and PM3 calculations and with the corresponding value SE(1) = 30.1 kcal mol(-)(1) for the parent tricyclo[8.2.2.2(4,7)]hexadeca-1(13),4(16),5,7(15),10(14),11-hexaene (1, [2.2]paracyclophane). The higher strain energies of 2 and 3 (by 4.6 and 11.9 kcal mol(-)(1)) are in accord with the well-known increased reactivities of their aromatic rings as a consequence of their increased bending. As revealed by an X-ray crystal structure analysis, the bending in the monoene 2 corresponds to that of 1 and 3 at one of two bridging corners.

Perfluoro-4-isopropylpyridine was used as a building block for the two-step synthesis of a variety of macrocyclic systems bearing pyridine sub-units which were characterised by X-ray crystallography. Electrospray mass spectrometry revealed that complexation of either cations and, unusually, anions is possible depending on the structure of the macrocycle.

The crystal structures of (1R,1'S)-2',2'-dichloro-N-(1-phenylethyl)cyclopropane-1'-carboxamide, C(12)H(13)Cl(2)NO, (I), and (1R,1'R)-2',2'-difluoro-N-(1-phenylethyl)cyclopropane-1'-carboxamide, C(12)H(13)F(2)NO, (II), have been determined. Both crystals contain two independent molecules with different conformations of the phenylethyl groups. In the crystals of both compounds, the molecules are linked together by N-H...O hydrogen bonds, thus forming chains in the a direction.

The electronic properties of the benzene molecule, for example its quadrupole moment and the electric field gradients (EFG's) at the H nuclei, are of fundamental importance in theoretical and experimental chemistry. With this in mind, single-crystal X-ray diffraction data on C(6)H(6) were collected with a charge-coupled device detector at T approximately 110 K. As accurate modelling of the thermal motion in the crystal was regarded as vital, especially for the hydrogen atoms, anisotropic-displacement parameters (ADP's) for the C and H atoms in C(6)H(6) were derived in a straightforward fashion from analysis of the temperature dependence of ADP's for the C and D atoms in C(6)D(6) at 15 K and 123 K obtained by neutron diffraction. Agreement between C-atom ADP's derived from thermal-motion analysis of neutron data and those obtained from multipole refinement by using the X-ray data is extraordinarily good; this gives confidence in the modelling of vibrational motion for the H atoms. The molecular quadrupole moment derived from the total charge density of the molecule in the crystal is (-29.7+/-2.4)x10(-40) C m(2), in excellent agreement with measurements made in the gas phase and in solution. The average deuterium nuclear quadrupole coupling constant (DQCC) derived from EFG tensors at H atoms is 182+/-17 kHz, also in excellent agreement with independent measurements. The strategy employed in this work may be of more general applicability for future accurate electron density studies.

Two subsets of data, corresponding to different crystalline modifications of the title compound, 5-oxatricyclo[5.1.0.0(1,3)]octane-4-one (C(7)H(8)O(2)), have been obtained from the same experiment. Both structures were successfully solved and refined. The packing of identical layers of molecules is different for monoclinic and orthorhombic forms.

(M)-(-)- and (P)-(+)-Trispiro[2.0.0.2.1.1]nonanes [(M)- and (P)-3] as well as (M)-(-)- and (P)-(+)-tetraspiro[2.0.0.0.2.1.1.1]undecanes [(M)- and (P)-4]-enantiomerically pure unbranched [4]- and [5]triangulanes-have been prepared starting from racemic bicyclopropylidenecarboxylic [(1RS)-12] and exo-dispiro[2.0.2.1]heptane-1-carboxylic [(1RS,3SR)-13] acids. The optical resolutions of rac-12 and rac-13 furnished enantiomerically pure acids (S)-(+)-12, (R)-(-)-12, (1R,3S)-(-)-13, and (1S,3R)-(+)-13. The ethyl ester (R)-25 of the acid (R)-(-)-12 was cyclopropanated to give carboxylates (1R,3R)-26 and (1R,3S)-26. The ester (1R,3S)-26 and acids (1R,3S)-13 and (1S,3R)-13 were converted into enantiomerically pure methylene[3]triangulanes (S)-(-)- and (R)-(+)-28. An alternative approach consisted of an enzymatic deracemization of endo-[(1SR,3SR)-dispiro[2.0.2.1]heptyl]methanol (rac-20) or anti-[(1SR,3RS)-4-methylenespiropentyl]methanol (rac-18). This afforded (S)-(-)- and (R)-(+)-28 (starting from rac-20), as well as enantiomerically pure (M)-(-)- and (P)-(+)-1,4-dimethylenespiropentanes [(M)- and (P)-23] starting from rac-18. The methylenetriangulanes (S)-(-)- and (R)-(+)-28 were cyclopropanated furnishing (M)- and (P)-3. The rhodium-catalyzed cycloaddition of ethyl diazoacetate onto (S)-(-)- and (R)-(+)-28 yielded four diastereomeric ethyl trispiro[2.0.0.2.1.1]nonane-1-carboxylates in approximately equal proportions. The enantiomerically pure esters (1R,3S,4S)- and (1S,3R,4R)-30 were isolated by careful distillation and then transformed into [5]triangulanes (M)- and (P)-4 using the same sequence of reactions as applied for (M)- and (P)-3. The structures of the key intermediates (R)-12 and rac-31 were confirmed by X-ray analyses. Although [4]- and [5]triangulanes have no chromophore which would lead to any significant absorption above 200 nm, they have remarkably high specific rotations even at 589 nm with [alpha](20)D=-192.7 [(M)-3, c=1.18, CHCl(3))] or +373.0 [(P)-4, c=1.18, CHCl(3))]. This remarkable optical rotatation is in line with their helical arrangement of sigma bonds, as confirmed by a full valence space single excitation configuration interaction treatment (SCI) in conjunction with DFT computations at the B3LYP/TZVP//B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory which reproduce the ORD very well. Thus, it is appropriate to call the helically shaped unbranched [n]triangulanes the "sigma-[n]helicenes", representing the sigma-bond analogues of the aromatic [n]helicenes.

Perspirocyclopropanated bicyclopropylidene (6) was prepared in three steps from 7-cyclopropylidenedispiro[2.0.2.1]heptane (4) (24% overall) or, more efficiently, through dehalogenative coupling of 7,7-dibromo[3]triangulane (15) (82%). This type of reductive dimerization turned out to be successful for the synthesis of (E)- and (Z)-bis(spiropentylidene) 14 (67%) and even of the "third-generation" spirocyclopropanated bicyclopropylidene 17 (17% overall from 15). Whereas the parent bicyclopropylidene 1 dimerized at 180 degrees C to yield [4]rotane, dimerization of 6 at 130 degrees C under 10 kbar pressure occured only with opening of one three-membered ring to yield the polyspirocyclopropanated (cyclopropylidene)cyclopentane derivative 19 (34% yield), and at the elevated temperature the polyspirocyclopropanated 2-cyclopropylidene[3.2.2]propellane derivative 20 (25 % yield). Perspirocyclopropanated bicyclopropylidene 6 and the "third-generation" bicyclopropylidene 17 gave addition of bromine, hydrogen bromide, and various dihalocarbenes without rearrangement. The functionally substituted branched [7]triangulane 28 and branched dichloro-C2v-[15]triangulane 32 were used to prepare the perspirocyclopropanated [3]rotane (D3h-[10]triangulane) 49 (six steps from 6, 1.4% overall yield) and the C2v-[15]triangulane 51 (two steps from 17, 41% overall). Upon catalytic hydrogenation, the perspirocyclopropanated bicyclopropylidene 6 yielded 7,7'-bis(dispiro[2.0.2.]-heptyl) (52) and, under more forcing conditions, 1,1'-bis(2,2,3,3-tetramethylcyclopropyl) (53). The bromofluorocarbene adduct 33 of 17 reacted with butyllithium to give the unexpected polyspirocyclopropanated 1,4-di-n-butyl-2-cyclopropylidenebicyclo[2.2.0]hexane derivative 37 as the main product (55% yield) along with the expected "third-generation" perspirocyclopropanated dicyclopropylidenemethane 38 (21% yield). Mechanistic aspects of this and the other unusual reactions are discussed. The structures of all new unusual hydrocarbons were proven by X-ray crystal structure analyses, and the most interesting structural and crystal packing features are presented.

The central three-membered ring in the title compound, trans-1,1',1"-cyclopropane-1,2,3-triyltris(cyclopropanol), C(12)H(18)O(3), shows pronounced asymmetry of the bond lengths, which is induced by the different orientations of the substituents. A network of hydrogen bonds links the molecules into sheets.

The crystal structure of poly[copper(II)-di-mu-hypophosphito-mu-urea], [Cu(H2PO2)2(CH4N2O)]n, has been determined at 293, 100 and 15 K. The geometry of the hypophosphite anion is very close to ideal, with point symmetry mm2. Each Cu atom lies on an inversion centre and is coordinated to six O atoms from four hypophosphite anions and two urea molecules, forming a tetragonal bipyramid. The unique urea molecule lies on a twofold axis. Each hypophosphite anion in the structure is coordinated to two Cu atoms. The hypophosphite anions, urea molecules and Cu(II) cations form polymeric ribbons. The Cu(II) cations in the ribbon are linked together by two hypophosphite anions and a urea molecule, which is coordinated to Cu via an O atom. The ribbons are linked to each other by N-H...O hydrogen bonds and form polymeric layers.

A remarkably high specific rotation, even at 589 nm, is shown by (M)-1, the first enantiomerically pure unbranched [4]triangulane, although it has no chromophore that would lead to any significant absorption above 200 nm. This outstanding rotatory power is in line with a helical arrangement of its sigma bonds, as confirmed by high-level computations. Thus, it is appropriate to call (M)-1 a "sigma-[4]helicene", the first sigma-bond analogue of the aromatic [n]helicenes.
