104. Ecklonia cava Polyphenols Have a Preventive Effect on Parkinson’s Disease through the Activation of the Nrf2-ARE Pathway

Abstract

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a degenerative neurological disorder defined by the deterioration and loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra, leading to a range of motor impairments and non-motor symptoms. The underlying mechanism of this neurodegeneration remains unclear. This research examined the neuroprotective properties of Ecklonia cava polyphenols (ECPs) in mitigating neuronal damage induced by rotenone via the activation of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)–antioxidant response element (ARE) pathway. Using human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells and PD model mice, we found that ECP, rich in the antioxidant polyphenol phlorotannin, boosted the gene expression and functionality of the antioxidant enzyme NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase-1. ECP also promoted Nrf2 nuclear translocation and increased p62 expression, suggesting that p62 helps sustain Nrf2 activation via a positive feedback loop. The neuroprotective effect of ECP was significantly reduced by Compound C (CC), an AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) inhibitor, which also suppressed Nrf2 nuclear translocation. In PD model mice, ECPs improved motor functions impaired by rotenone, as assessed by the pole test and wire-hanging test, and restored intestinal motor function and colon tissue morphology. Additionally, ECPs increased tyrosine hydroxylase expression in the substantia nigra, indicating a protective effect on dopaminergic neurons. These findings suggest that ECP has a preventative effect on PD.

Abstract

In the estimation of the mean matrix in a multivariate normal distribution, the generalized Bayes estimators with closed forms are provided, and the sufficient conditions for their minimaxity are derived relative to both matrix and scalar quadratic loss functions. The generalized Bayes estimators of the covariance matrix are also given with closed forms, and the dominance properties are discussed for the Stein loss function.

Abstract

In 2015 the Gamma-Ray Observation of Winter Thunderstorms (GROWTH) collaboration launched a mapping observation campaign for high-energy atmospheric phenomena related to thunderstorms and lightning discharges. This campaign has developed a detection network of gamma rays with up to 10 radiation monitors installed in Kanazawa and Komatsu cities, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, where low-charge-center winter thunderstorms frequently occur. During four winter seasons from October 2016 to April 2020, in total 70 gamma-ray glows, minute-lasting bursts of gamma rays originating from thunderclouds, were detected. Their average duration is 58.9 sec. Among the detected events, 77% were observed in nighttime. The gamma-ray glows can be classified into temporally-symmetric, temporally-asymmetric, and lightning-terminated types based on their count-rate histories. An averaged energy spectrum of the gamma-ray glows is well fitted with a power-law function with an exponential cutoff, whose photon index, cutoff energy, and flux are $0.613\pm0.009$, $4.68\pm0.04$ MeV, and $(1.013\pm0.003)\times10^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (0.2-20.0MeV), respectively. Abstract

The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), a heat-charge conversion mechanism based on a magnetic metal, has been extensively studied for application in thin thermoelectric devices. The low magnetization and fabrication at room temperature are important for flexible ANE thermoelectric devices on plastic substrates. Therefore, we investigated the ANE in ferrimagnetic GdxFe100-x films with low magnetization in this study by systematically varying the Gd composition x. Although the Gd33Fe67 film with a Gd composition close to magnetic compensation composition exhibited very low magnetization, an ANE coefficient |S_ANE| of 2.13 uV/K was obtained, which is close to the highest value reported thus far. Finally, we demonstrated the ANE in a Gd33Fe67 film deposited on a flexible sheet. A sufficient ANE voltage was obtained while maintaining the flexibility of the sample, indicating the potential application of this material in thermoelectric devices exploiting the ANE of Gd-Fe films., Comment: We notified the critical mistake in the thermoelectric measurements. Abstract

Abstract The spin Hall effect enables fast and reliable writing operations for next‐generation spin‐orbit‐torque magnetoresistive random‐access memories (SOT‐MRAMs). To develop SOT‐MRAMs; however, the spin Hall material should have a sufficiently low writing energy and high annealing stability for the semiconductor integration process. Thus far, none of the crystalline‐based spin Hall materials are able to satisfy these requirements. Here, a promising solution for SOT‐MRAMs is provided using amorphous W─Ta─B alloys. Even without a long‐range crystal order, W─Ta─B alloys exhibit both large effective spin Hall angles up to 40% derived from a Ta substitutional doping and superior annealing stability (up to 400 °C) due to the addition of B, enabling them to satisfy both requirements. Nanoscale three‐terminal SOT‐MRAM cells are fabricated, and these are demonstrated to have high magnetoresistance ratios (up to 130%) and extremely low intrinsic switching current densities (down to 4 × 106 A cm−2). These results show that amorphous spin Hall materials can provide the key for realizing high‐performance SOT‐MRAMs.

Abstract

The application of 28 GHz millimeter-wave is prevalent owing to the global spread of fifth-generation wireless communication systems. Its thermal effect is a dominant factor which potentially causes pain and tissue damage to the body parts exposed to the millimeter waves. However, the threshold of this thermal sensation, that is, the degree of change in skin temperature from the baseline at which the first subjective response to the thermal effects of the millimeter waves occurs, remains unclear. Here, we investigated the thermal sensation threshold and assessed its reliability when exposed to millimeter waves. Twenty healthy adults were exposed to 28 GHz millimeter-wave on their left middle fingertip at five levels of antenna input power: 0.2, 1.1, 1.6, 2.1, and 3.4 W (incident power density: 27–399 mW/cm2). This measurement session was repeated twice on the same day to evaluate the threshold reliability. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland–Altman analysis were used as proxies for the relative and absolute reliability, respectively. The number of participants who perceived a sensation during the two sessions at each exposure level was also counted as the perception rate. Mean thermal sensation thresholds were within 0.9°C–1.0°C for the 126–399 mW/cm2 conditions, while that was 0.2°C for the 27 mW/cm2 condition. The ICCs for the threshold at 27 and 126 mW/cm2 were interpreted as poor and fair, respectively, while those at higher exposure levels were moderate to substantial. Apart from a proportional bias in the 191 mW/cm2 condition, there was no fixed bias. All participants perceived a thermal sensation at 399 mW/cm2 in both sessions, and the perception rate gradually decreased with lower exposure levels. Importantly, two-thirds of the participants answered that they felt a thermal sensation in both or one of the sessions at 27 mW/cm2, despite the low-temperature increase. These results suggest that the thermal sensation threshold is around 1.0°C, consistent across exposure levels, while its reliability increases with higher exposure levels. Furthermore, the perception of thermal sensation may be inherently ambiguous owing to the nature of human perception.

In this article, we consider numerical schemes for polynomial diffusions on the unit ball, which are solutions of stochastic differential equations with a diffusion coefficient of the form $\sqrt{1-|x|^{2}}$. We introduce a semi-implicit Euler--Maruyama scheme with the projection onto the unit ball and provide the $L^{2}$-rate of convergence.
