102. Detecting density dependence on tree survival in a deciduous broadleaved forest in Baotianman National Nature Reserve

Abstract

It has been found that density dependence plays a crucial role in determination of species distribu- tion and coexistence, and the effect of negative density dependence also plays an important part among phy- logenetically related species. Based on two census datasets in 2009 and 2014 of the 1-ha deciduous broad- leaved forest plot in Baotianman National Nature Reserve, generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) were used to examine the density dependence on individual survival of the top 11 species (with high important value) at different neighborhood scales and different DBH sizes (1 cm ≤ DBH< 5 cm, 5 cm ≤ DBH < 10 cm, DBH ≥ 10 cm). The results showed that (1) mean annual mortality and recruitment rate of indi- viduals (DBH ≥ 1 cm) were 5.85% and 0.27%, respectively; (2) survival rate of 5 tree species was nega- tively correlated with abundance or neighbor conspecific basal area; (3) density dependence and phylogenetic diversity exerted significant effects on survival of small individuals (at 5 m neighborhood scale), whereas no significant influence on medium trees. With increasing tree size, phylogenetic diversity exerted important ef- fect on large individuals at 7.5 m and 10 m neighborhood scales. In conclusion, density dependence and phy- logenetic diversity play different roles on tree survival at different life stages and neighborhood scales in the deciduous broad-leaved forest in Baotianman National Nature Reserve. ·研究报告·

Abstract

Gambogic acid (GA), a natural product with unique structure, was reported to have broad antiproliferation activities against cancer cell lines. As a reactive Michael acceptor, the 10-position of GA is susceptible to nucleophiles, thus limiting its clinical application as an anticancer agent. Moreover, the 6-OH forms an intramolecular hydrogen bond with 8-CO, which can make the 9, 10 double bond more reactive to nucleophiles. In this essay, two strategies (A and B) were applied to solve the above-mentioned problems. Strategy A was to increase the steric hindrance of C-10 to reduce the activity of GA towards nucleophiles. Strategy B was to replace the hydroxyl of C-6 with other substituents based on the assumption that the intra-molecular hydrogen bond could increase the electrophilicity of C-10. Results showed the electrophilicity of C-10 disappeared as well as the antiproliferation activity against cancer cell lines by introducing a methyl group at C-10. Strategy B showed that the electrophilicity of C-10 was reduced dramatically while maintained the activity by replacement of the hydroxyl of C-6 with neutral or basic groups.

Abstract

Abstract: Congeneric species often have similar ecological characteristics and use similar resources. These similarities may make it easier for them to co‐occur in a similar habitat but may also lead to strong competitions that limit their coexistence. Hence, how do similarities in congeneric species affect their coexistence exactly? This study mainly used spatial point pattern analysis in two 1 hm2 plots in the Baotianman National Nature Reserve, Henan, China, to compare the similarities in spatial distributions and interspecific associations of Quercus species. Results revealed that Quercus species were all aggregated under the complete spatial randomness null model, and aggregations were weaker under the heterogeneous Poisson process null model in each plot. The interspecific associations of Quercus species to non‐Quercus species were very similar in Plot 1. However, they can be either positive or negative in different plots between the co‐occurring Quercus species. The spatial distributions of congeneric species, interspecific associations with non‐Quercus species, neighborhood richness around species, and species diversity were all different between the two plots. We found that congeneric species did have some similarities, and the closely related congeneric species can positive or negative associate with each other in different plots. The co‐occurring congeneric species may have different survival strategies in different habitats. On the one hand, competition among congenerics may lead to differentiation in resource utilization. On the other hand, their similar interspecific associations can strengthen their competitive ability and promote local exclusion to noncongeneric species to obtain more living space. Abstract

We report a detailed analysis of optical properties of single submonolayer InAs structures grown on GaAs (001) matrix. It is shown that the formation of InAs dots with 1 monolayer (ML) height leads to localization of exciton under certain submonolayer InAs coverage, which play a key role in the highly improved luminescence efficiency of the submonolayer InAs/GaAs structures.
