117. New functional probiotic Lactobacillus sakei probio 65 alleviates atopic symptoms in the mouse.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the improvement of allergic dermatitis in chemical allergen-induced mice by Lactobacillus sakei probio 65. L. sakei probio-65 was isolated from kimchi, a traditional Korean fermented food. This strain was resistant to gastric acidity, bile, and several antibiotics and possessed antimicrobial activity against several pathogenic microorganisms. To investigate whether the probiotic activity of L. sakei probio 65 was effective for treating allergic dermatitis, the organism was supplied to mice triggered by allergen (1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene). Mice that received L. sakei probio 65 showed a more rapid recovery compared to control mice, as assessed by visual evaluation of the severity of allergic dermatitis and levels of immunoglobulin (Ig) E and interleukin (IL)-4. L. sakei probio 65 exhibited good probiotic properties in vitro and in mice and was effective in reducing allergen-induced skin inflammation through the regulation of both elevated IgE and IL-4 in sensitized mice. Abstract

Paleosols collected from several Paleolithic sites in Korea were used to extract organic materials for 14C AMS dating. Two types of soil profiles can be classified based on the 14C ages resulting from these materials compared with those of charcoals from the same stratigraphic horizon. For sites having type 1 column profiles, paleosol results gave ages considerably younger than the charcoal age, regardless of the pretreatment method used to extract organic materials. However, correct depositional ages were obtained from paleosols of type 2 which meets conditions on column profiles, such as alluvial and flood plain deposits overlain by iron and aluminum hydroxides rich deposits. The difference between these two results could be explained by the flocculation–dispersion effect for the downward translocation of clay particles, which contains young biogenic carbonaceous materials, and/or by the variation of soil permeability which induces the different leaching velocity. 121. Robust digital position control of brushless DC motor with adaptive load torque observer

Abstract

A new control method for the robust position control of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor using the adaptive load torque observer is presented. It is shown that the augmented state variable feedback can be applied to the BLDC motor system approximately linearised using the field-orientation method. To overcome the problem of an unknown parameter or a parameter variation such as a flux linkage, an adaptive mechanism is employed. As a result, the robustness can be obtained without affecting the overall system response. The load disturbance is detected by the adaptive 0-observer of an unknown and inaccessible input, and is compensated by feedforwarding the equivalent current having the fast response.

122. Acantholytic dyskeratotic epidermal nevus induced by ultraviolet B radiation

Abstract

We report a case of acantholytic dyskeratotic epidermal nevus induced by repeated ultraviolet B radiation in a 16-year-old Korean girl. She had experienced pruritic skin rashes on the right side of the abdomen and flank area in a zosteriform distribution for the past 10 years. They were aggravated during the summer and spontaneously disappeared in the winter. Papules revealed acantholytic dyskeratotic cells that were diagnosed as acantholytic dyskeratotic epidermal nevus. Suberythemal and erythemal doses of UVB were irradiated to the lesional skin (right side of abdomen) and nonlesional skin (left side of abdomen) for 4 consecutive days. UVB-induced pruritic papules were observed on the lesional skin and a biopsy specimen of the papules also showed acantholytic dyskeratotic cells, which were compatible with acantholytic dyskeratotic epidermal nevus. 124. Synergism of glucose and fructose in net glycogen synthesis in perfused rat livers.

Abstract

Synergism of glucose and fructose in net glycogen synthesis was studied in perfused livers from 24-h fasted rats. With either glucose or fructose alone, net glycogen deposition did not occur (p greater than 0.10 for each), whereas the addition of both together resulted in significant glycogen accumulation (net glycogen accumulation was 0.21 +/- 0.03 mumol of glucose/g of liver/min at 2 mM fructose and 30 mM glucose, p less than 0.001). To better understand this synergism, intermediary substrate levels were compared at steady state with various glucose levels in the absence and in the presence of 2 mM fructose. Independent of fructose, hepatic glucose and glucose 6-phosphate increased proportionally when glucose level in the medium was raised (r = 0.86, p less than 0.001). Unlike glucose 6-phosphate, UDP-glucose did not consistently increase with glucose (p greater than 0.10); in fact, there was a small decrease at a very high glucose level (30 mM), a result consistent with the well-established activation of glycogen synthase by glucose. With elevated glucose, the level of glucose 6-phosphate was strongly correlated with glycogen content (r = 0.71, p less than 0.01, slope = 32). Adding fructose increased the "efficiency" of glucose 6-phosphate to glycogen conversion: the effect of a given increment in glucose 6-phosphate upon glycogen accumulation was increased 2.6-fold (r = 0.73, p less than 0.01, slope = 86). A kinetic modeling approach was used to investigate the mechanisms by which fructose synergized glycogen accumulation when glucose was elevated. Based on steady-state hepatic substrate levels, net hepatic glucose output, and net glycogen synthesis rate, the model estimated the rate constants of major enzymes and individual fluxes in the glycogen metabolic pathway. Modeling analysis is consistent with the following scenario: glycogen synthase is activated by glucose, whereas glucose-6-phosphatase was inhibited. In addition, the model supports the hypothesis that fructose synergizes net glycogen accumulation due to suppression of phosphorylase. Overall, our analysis suggests that glucose enhances the metabolic flux to glycogen by inducing a build up of glucose 6-phosphate via combined effects of mass action and glucose-6-phosphatase inhibition and activating glycogen synthase and that fructose enhances glycogen accumulation by retaining glycogen via phosphorylase inhibition.

Abstract

A combined buck and boost zero-current-switched series-resonant AC/DC power converter for DC output voltage regulation with a high power factor is proposed. The proposed single-phase AC/DC power converter enables zero current switching operation of all the power devices, allowing the circuit to operate at high switching frequencies and high power levels. A dynamic model for this AC/DC power converter is developed in a discrete-time domain and an analysis of the internal operational characteristics is explored. Based on this analysis, a switched sliding-mode control technique is investigated with its advantages over the other type of current-control technique being discussed. With the proposed control techniques, unity power factor without current overshoot and a wide output voltage range can be obtained.

126. Torque harmonics minimisation in permanent magnet synchronous motor with back EMF estimation

A predictive current control in the synchronous reference frame with the back EMF estimation using the previous voltages and currents is presented. To reduce the torque harmonics produced by the air gap flux harmonics, the compensated d-axis and q-axis currents from the estimated back EMFs are employed. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is compared to the conventional one through simulation and experiment.

Abstract

Harry Diamond Laboratories (HDL), Woodbridge, VA, currently uses groundplane version electric- and magnetic-field sensors to measure the electric and magnetic fields produced during a simulated high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP). These sensors are also used for the measurement of such pulsed fields in the vicinity of metallic enclosures. A new sensor structure has been developed to measure the electric and magnetic fields accurately. The authors have recently fabricated and mounted a hollow metallic cylinder behind the sensor's 0.218-m (8 1/2 in) ground plane to house a fiber-optic transmitter, amplifiers, and other equipment necessary for data collection. The presence of this metallic cylinder increases (“enhances”) the amplitude of a signal when measured with this new sensor structure geometry (“sensor/cylinder”). The electric- and magnetic-field enhancements caused by the presence of this metallic cylinder were measured in both the frequency and time domains. The enhancement was also calculated numerically using a three-dimensional finite-difference code. To eliminate unwanted field coupling to the sensor's coaxial signal cable, the output of the sensor is transmitted through fiber-optic cables to remotely located recording equipment. In the frequency domain, the enhancements for both the electric and magnetic field were determined using a large transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cell. In the time domain, the enhancements were determined by comparing simulated HEMP fields measured with this sensor/cylinder to those measured with miniature electric- and magnetic-field sensors. The degree of enhancement of this sensor/cylinder will vary as a function of distance when the sensor/cylinder is placed next to a conducting object, such as a metallic shelter. These enhancements were also determined using miniature electric- and magnetic-field sensors.

Abstract

An experimental technique to measure transient surface currents of a scatterer using a King-type semicircular miniature probe is reported. The principal extension of the King technique is the use of the loop probe in transient currents measurement. The transient characteristics of the probe are considered based on the Whiteside theory (29) for the loop. The probes fabricated were subjected to transient excitation in a coaxial calibration jig. Their frequency responses were determined by Fourier transforming their output and deconvolving the excitation spectrum. The agreement between the measured results and the Whiteside theory is observed and evaluated. The probe geometry was tested in an application context, namely, the probing of current on a cylindrical scatterer. The induced surface currents were measured using the probe along the scatterer, and deconvolution of the probe transfer function was carried out subsequently. The deconvolved waveforms are reported and the results of numerical predictions by way of a time domain integral equation technique are reported for comparison. The application goal for this work lies in the numerical extraction of the Singularity Expansion Method (SEM) description of scattering from a given object, using measured transient data.

Abstract

A method is described in this paper for crack propagation prediction using only the initial crack length of the target specimen. The proposed method consists of two parts: (1) crack length estimation using support vector regression (SVR) and (2) crack length prediction using a new trans-fitting method. Features based on the filtered wave signals were defined and a model was constructed using the SVR method to estimate the crack length. The hyper-parameters of the SVR model were selected based on a grid search algorithm. Prediction of the crack length was based on the previous crack length, which was estimated based on the wave signals. In this step, a newly proposed trans-fitting method was applied. The proposed trans-fitting method updated the selected candidate function to translocate the trend of crack propagation based on the training dataset. By translocating the trends to the estimated crack length of the target specimen, the crack propagation could be predicted. The proposed method was validated by comparison with given specimens. The results show that the proposed method can estimate and predict the crack length accurately.

Abstract

Aim of the study: Sasim, a traditional prescription composed of seven herbal mixtures, has been widely used as an oriental medicine for the treatment of cerebral infarction in Korea. However, the regulatory mechanisms by which the formula affects immune processing in cerebral infarction patients remain unknown.Materials and methods: The levels of secretory protein of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha were determined in both THP-1 differentiated macrophage-like (THP-1/M) cells and Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from cerebral infarction patients. Also, the levels of protein and mRNA of TNF-alpha and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) were detected in THP-1/M cells under our experimental condition.Results: Sasim markedly suppressed lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced TNF-alpha at the levels of secretory protein and mRNA in both PBMCs from cerebral infarction patients and THP-1/M cells. Interestingly, Sasim strongly induced HO-1, the rate-limiting enzyme of heme catabolism, at both the protein and mRNA levels in THP-1/M cells. Treatment with tin protoporphyrin IX (SnPP), an inhibitor of the catalytic activity of HO, significantly abolished the suppressive effect of Sasim on LPS-induced TNF-a production in THP-1/M cells.Conclusions: These data indicate that Sasim may be beneficial in the cessation of inflammatory processes associated with cerebral infarction through the induction of HO-1 expression. Abstract

An explosive hydrogen burning process occurring in novae or X-ray bursts has been suggested to be important for observation of 1.809-MeV gamma rays of 26Al. In order to study relevant proton resonances in 26Si and 27P above the proton threshold, we performed elastic scattering experiments at low energies by using 25Al and 26Si radioactive ion beams. We investigated proton resonances in 26Si up to E c.m. = 3.016 MeV as well as in 27P up to E c.m. = 3.290 MeV. We compared observed proton resonances in 27P with those obtained by the OXBASH shell model calculation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
