Tuning of the Fermi level (EF) near Weyl points is one of the promising approaches to realize the large anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). In this work, we introduce an efficient approach to tune EF for the Co2MnAl Weyl semimetal through a layer-by-layer combinatorial deposition of the Co2MnAl1−xSix (CMAS) thin film. A single-crystalline composition-spread film with x varied from 0 to 1 was fabricated. The structural characterization reveals the formation of a single-phase CMAS alloy throughout the composition range with a gradual improvement of L21 order with x similar to the co-sputtered single layered film, which validates the present fabrication technique. Hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy for the CMAS composition-spread film directly confirmed the rigid band-like EF shift of ∼0.40 eV toward the composition gradient direction from x = 0 to 1. The anomalous Ettingshausen effect (AEE), the reciprocal of the ANE, has been measured for the whole x range using a single strip along the composition gradient using the lock-in thermography technique. The similarity of the x dependence of observed AEE and ANE signals clearly demonstrates that AEE measurement on the composition-spread film is an effective approach to investigate the composition dependence of the ANE of Weyl semimetal thin films and realize the highest performance without fabricating several films, which will accelerate the research on ANE-based energy harvesting.

COVID-19 has affected many areas of daily life, including communication and learning. Social distancing is essential to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In these situations, teaching communication skills is essential for helping individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) reach their full potential. To provide communication education while maintaining social distancing, we developed a communication training system using a tele-operated robot. In this system, we prepared a PC and a robot for each participant. The participants were grouped in pairs and communicated with each other through the tele-operated robot. The objective of this study was to test whether this system can maintain motivation for training in individuals with ASD and whether our system was useful for improving communication skills. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the taking a class by teachers alone (TCT) group or robot-mediated communication exercise (RMC) group. Participants in the TCT group took a class about communication skills from their teacher. Participants in the RMC group, in addition to taking a class by teacher, were grouped in pairs and communicated with each other through the tele-operated robot once a week over 4 weeks (for a total of five sessions). In total, twenty individuals with ASD participated in the study. One-way ANOVA revealed that there were significantly greater improvements in being good at describing their thoughts to others, which was self-rated (F = 6.583; p = 0.019), and good at listening to the thoughts or feelings of others, which was rated by themselves (F = 5.635; p = 0.029) and their teacher (F = 5.333; p = 0.033). As expected, the motivation for training using this system was maintained during a session. Overall, this study revealed that our system was useful for improving communication skills (e.g., listening to the thoughts or feelings of others). Teaching communication skills under pandemic conditions is important, and this study demonstrated the feasibility of communication training using tele-operated robots.

In this article, we show that rotation of a black hole can create antigravity and anti-gravitational waves, given that there is a strong gravity in the black hole, which distorts time and space. At first, we derived the curvature tensors upon Einstein’s field equation, using spherical polar coordinates, and then calculated the coefficients of the curvature tensors to simulate the strength of each component of the tensors. It is assumed that the stress-energy tensor, which is located outside of the black hole, can reflect the strength of the gravitational field and the gravitational waves. As the result, we concluded that, if the time and space are distorted in the black hole, the rotation can create antigravity and the anti-gravitational waves. In addition, the result of the simulation shows that the antigravity positively contributes to the stress-energy tensor, which may expand the size of the Universe.

Despite growing evidence of aberrant neuronal complexity in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), it remains unclear how this variation arises. Neural oscillations reportedly comprise different functions depending on their own properties. Therefore, in this study, we investigated details of the complexity of neural oscillations by decomposing the oscillations into frequency, amplitude, and phase for AD patients. We applied resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) to 17 AD patients and 21 healthy control subjects. We first decomposed the source time series of the MEG signal into five intrinsic mode functions using ensemble empirical mode decomposition. We then analyzed the temporal complexities of these time series using multiscale entropy. Results demonstrated that AD patients had lower complexity on short time scales and higher complexity on long time scales in the alpha band in temporal regions of the brain. We evaluated the alpha band complexity further by decomposing it into amplitude and phase using Hilbert spectral analysis. Consequently, we found lower amplitude complexity and higher phase complexity in AD patients. Correlation analyses between spectral complexity and decomposed complexities revealed scale-dependency. Specifically, amplitude complexity was positively correlated with spectral complexity on short time scales, whereas phase complexity was positively correlated with spectral complexity on long time scales. Regarding the relevance of cognitive function to the complexity measures, the phase complexity on the long time scale was found to be correlated significantly with the Mini-Mental State Examination score. Additionally, we examined the diagnostic utility of the complexity characteristics using machine learning (ML) methods. We prepared a feature pool using multiple sparse autoencoders (SAEs), chose some discriminating features, and applied them to a support vector machine (SVM). Compared to the simple SVM and the SVM after feature selection (FS + SVM), the SVM with multiple SAEs (SAE + FS + SVM) had improved diagnostic accuracy. Through this study, we 1) advanced the understanding of neuronal complexity in AD patients using decomposed temporal complexity analysis and 2) demonstrated the effectiveness of combining ML methods with information about signal complexity for the diagnosis of AD.

Tunable coherent light sources operating in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region in the 100–200-nm (6–12 eV) wavelength range have important spectroscopic applications in many research fields, including time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Recent advances in laser technology have enabled the upconversion of visible femtosecond lasers to the vacuum and extreme ultraviolet regions. However, the complexity of their experimental setups and the scarcity of bulk nonlinear crystals for VUV generation have hampered its widespread use. Here, we propose the use of a free-standing dielectric nanomembrane as a simple and practical method for tunable VUV generation. We demonstrate that third harmonic VUV light is generated with sufficient intensity for spectroscopic applications from commercially available SiO2 nanomembranes of submicron thicknesses under excitation with visible femtosecond laser pulses. The submicron thickness of the nanomembranes is optimal for maximizing VUV generation efficiency and prevents self-phase modulation and spectral broadening of the fundamental beam. The observed VUV photons are up to 107 photons per pulse at 157 nm with a 1-kHz repetition rate, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 10−6. Moreover, the central VUV wavelength can be tuned in the 146–190-nm wavelength range by changing the fundamental wavelength. We also explore material and thickness dependence with experiments and calculations. The presented results suggest that dielectric nanomembranes can be used as practical nonlinear media for VUV spectroscopic applications.

In this research we formulated the curvature tensors with the system of spherical polar coordinates, which describe the gravitational field and gravitational waves of a black hole; and then we calculated eigenvalues of the curvature tensors to estimate the relative strengths of their components to the stress-energy tensor in Einstein’s field equation. For this simulation, we assumed that the time and the distance interact with each other if we travel from Earth to the inside of the black hole, and then the result of the simulation showed that the gravitational waves carry the same components of the gravitational field of the black hole. On the other hand, when we assumed that the time and the distance are independent, which resembles the situation outside of the boundary of the black hole toward Earth, the curvature tensors are different between those of the gravitational field and the gravitational waves. Upon the results of the simulation we conclude that the gravitational waves that come from the inside of the black hole carry the information of the gravitational field inside of the black hole, if we assume that time and space are dependent each other.

The effectiveness of a simulated microgravity environment as a novel method for preserving the freshness of vegetables was investigated. Three types of vegetables were selected: vegetable soybean, mung bean sprouts, and white radish sprouts. These selected vegetables were fixed on a three-dimensional rotary gravity controller, rotated slowly. The selected vegetables were stored at 25°C and 66% of relative humidity for 9, 6, or 5 d while undergoing this process. The simulated microgravity was controlled utilizing a gravity controller around 0 m s-2. The mung bean sprouts stored for 6 d under simulated microgravity conditions maintained higher thickness levels than the vegetable samples stored under normal gravity conditions (9.8 m s-2) for the same duration. The mass of all three items decreased with time without regard to the gravity environment, though the samples stored within the simulated microgravity environment displayed significant mass retention on and after 3 d for mung bean sprout samples and 1 d for white radish sprout samples. In contrast, the mass retention effect was not observed in the vegetable soybean samples. Hence, it was confirmed that the mass retention effect of microgravity was limited to sprout vegetables. As a result of analysis harnessing a mathematical model, assuming that the majority of the mass loss is due to moisture loss, a significant difference in mass reduction coefficient occurs among mung bean sprouts and white radish sprouts due to the microgravity environment, and the mass retention effect of simulated microgravity is quantitatively evaluated utilizing mathematical models. Simulated microgravity, which varies significantly from conventional refrigeration, ethylene control, and modified atmosphere, was demonstrated effective as a novel method for preserving and maintaining the freshness of sprout vegetables. This founding will support long-term space flight missions by prolonging shelf life of sprout vegetables.

Abstract Background A growing body of anecdotal evidence indicates that the use of robots may provide unique opportunities for assisting children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, previous studies investigating the effects of interventions using robots on joint attention (JA) in children with ASD have shown insufficient results. The robots used in these studies could not turn their eyes, which was a limitation preventing the robot from resembling a human agent. Methods We compared the behavior of children with ASD with that of children with typical development (TD) during a JA elicitation task while the children interacted with either a human or a robotic agent. We used the robot “CommU,” which has clear eyes and can turn its eyes, for the robotic intervention. The age range of the participants was limited to 5–6 years. Results Sixty-eight participants participated in this study, including 30 (10 females and 20 males) children with ASD and 38 (13 females and 25 males) children with TD. The participants were randomly assigned to one of the following two groups: the robotic intervention group or the control group. JA in the children with ASD was better during the robotic intervention than during the human agent intervention. These children exhibited improved performance in the JA task with human after interacting with the robot CommU. JA was differentially facilitated by the human and robotic agents between the ASD and TD children. Conclusions The findings of this study significantly contribute to the literature on the impact of robots on JA and provide information regarding the suitability of specific robot types for therapeutic use.

Association between variants in 11 different genes and breast cancer risk has been established and sequencing of these genes is recommended to provide personalized diagnosis, therapy, and surveillance for the high-risk patients and their relatives. Here the authors analyse the frequency of germline pathogenic mutations in these genes specifically in a Japanese population.

In this article, we made the mathematical explanation of the anti-gravitational waves, by the inspiration that we got from the observed positron in cosmic rays. Then, we analyzed the mathematical difference between positive and negative flows of gravitational waves; and we calculated the spin of the negative flow of gravitational waves, which is used to stabilize the movement of the waves. In the mathematical formulas we found that positive and negative flows move in opposite directions from each other; therefore, if we see the spin (rotation) of the waves from the planet that emits the waves, the positive flow rotates anti-clockwise, while the negative flow rotates clockwise. We also investigated the possible origin of gravitational waves, and concluded that the negative flow can occur when the positive flow appears, leaving holes behind, in the gravitational field, which is trig-gered by the movements of a large mass of the planet.

Abstract Background The generation of recombinant proteins for commercialisation must be cost-effective. Despite the cost-effective production of recombinant feline interferon (rFeIFN) by a baculovirus expression system, this rFeIFN carries insect-type N-glycans, with core α 1,3 fucosyl residues that act as potential allergens. An alternative method of production may yield recombinant glycoproteins with reduced antigenicity. Results A cDNA clone encoding the fifteenth subtype of FeIFN-α (FeIFN-α15) was isolated from a Japanese domestic cat. This clone encoded a protein of 189 amino acids with a molecular mass of 21.1 kDa. The rFeIFN-α15 was expressed using a transgenic silkworm system, which was expected to yield an N-glycan structure with reduced antigenicity compared with the protein produced by the baculovirus system. The resulting rFeIFN-α15 accumulated in the sericin layer of silk fibres and was easily extracted and purified by column chromatography. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of purified rFeIFN-α15 was identical to the mature form of natural sequence. Moreover, its N-glycans did not include detectable core α 1,3 fucosyl residues. Its anti-vesicular stomatitis virus activity (2.6 × 108 units/mg protein) was comparable to that of the baculovirus-expressed rFeIFN. Conclusions The lower allergy risk of rFeIFN produced by the transgenic silkworm system than by the baculovirus expression system is due to the former lacking core α 1,3 fucosyl residues in its N-glycans. The rFeIFN-α15 produced by the transgenic silkworm system may be a prospective candidate for the next generation of rFeIFN in veterinary medicine.

Although current in-plane giant magnetoresistance (CIP-GMR) is widely used as various magnetic field sensors, a higher magnetoresistance (MR) ratio is still required to improve their sensitivity and detectivity for certain applications. Here, we report dramatic enhancement of the MR ratio up to 26.5% in a spin valve device and 40.5% in an antiferromagnetically coupled trilayer device using fully epitaxial Co50Fe50/Cu/Co50Fe50 structures with metastable bcc-Cu spacer layers. Transmission electron microscopy analysis indicated that the metastable bcc-Cu had a perfect lattice match at the bcc-Co50Fe50/bcc-Cu interfaces. First-principles calculations showed good electronic band matching that induces a large spin asymmetry of the electron transmittance in the in-plane direction. The combination of this substantial lattice match and electronic band match is attributed to the large MR ratio, suggesting that exploring the use of metastable structure in ferromagnetic/nonferromagnetic multilayers will lead to further enhancement of CIP-GMR.

Abstract Objective All childhood vaccines, except the oral polio vaccine, should be kept at 2–8 °C, since the vaccine potency can be damaged by heat or freezing temperature. A temperature monitoring study conducted in 2008–2009 reported challenges in cold chain management from the provincial level downwards. The present cross-sectional pilot study aimed to assess the current status of the cold chain in two provinces (Saravan and Xayabouly) of Lao People’s Democratic Republic between March–April 2016. Two types of temperature data loggers recorded the temperatures and the proportions of time exposed to 8 °C were calculated. Results The temperature remained within the appropriate range in the central and provincial storages. Abstract Background Carney complex (CNC) is a very rare disease. Although thyroid lesions are included in the diagnostic criteria for CNC, they are an infrequent occurrence. Case presentation The patient was a 69-year-old woman who had undergone the removal of a left atrial myxoma 10 years earlier, at the age of 59. At the time of the operation, thyroid ultrasonography (US) revealed multiple hypoechoic nodules. Thyroid scintigraphy revealed an increased uptake of 99mTc in these lesions, which was consistent with toxic multinodular goiter, and she was diagnosed with CNC. Genetic studies showed no mutation in the PRKAR1A (protein kinase A regulatory subunit 1-α) gene. From then on, she received annual brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), abdominal computed tomography (CT), and thyroid US examinations. Her follicular thyroid nodules gradually increased in number and size. Although aspiration cytology samples from the thyroid nodules diagnosed them as class III, thyroid cancer could not be ruled out. The patient underwent a partial thyroidectomy, and the pathological diagnosis was multiple follicular adenomas. Conclusion Careful and frequent evaluation of the thyroid gland should be required for CNC patients due to the potential for carcinoma to develop in the context of a variety of follicular thyroid lesions.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a rash team management intervention designed by certified nurses, medical physicians, and certified pharmacists. The quality of life (QOL) of patients administered epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) was assessed using the dermatology life quality index (DLQI) and Skindex-29 QOL questionnaires. Methods: A total of 51 patients with nonsmall cell lung cancer who were treated using EGFR-TKIs were examined between November 1, 2014, and October 31, 2015, at the Institute of Biomedical Research and Innovation in Kobe city, Japan. All the patients were treated daily with erlotinib, gefitinib, or afatinib. The common terminology criteria for adverse events (version 4.0) system were used to grade treatment-induced toxicity events. The multimodality rash management team included nurses, pharmacists, and physicians. The team intervened before the initiation of treatment with EGFR-TKIs and at every visit. Patient QOL characteristics were evaluated using the DLQI and Skindex-29 assessment tools. Results: The number of patients with high-grade toxicity decreased when the multimodal approach was used. No grade 3 skin toxicities were recorded in the postintervention cohort. QOL scores for symptoms and feelings (emotions) were impaired in patients who were treated with EGFR-TKIs. Conclusions: The rash team management approach may be useful for patients treated with EGFR-TKIs. Specific QOL evaluation tools for the assessment of the effects of a team approach for rash management should be developed.
