We present a view of language that crosses modal considerations (e.g., speech vs. augmentative systems) and places language within an interaction framework. We emphasize the need to consider normal social, cognitive, and linguistic development in selecting program guidelines for developmentally delayed persons. We address the child's linguistic code not as a set of phonetic, syntactic, and semantic features that can be trained in isolation, but as a means by which he can exercise the various pragmatic uses of communication. In effect, our interest has thus expanded from the child alone to the child as one member of a communicating dyad. Programming in the areas of mother's verbal input, expanding children's language skills, training in augmentative systems--all reflect an overriding objective of optimizing the language-user's ability to successfully participate in interactions with other persons in his/her environment.

Presented is an unusual case of congenital atresia of the lower vagina with regular menses through a fistulous tract. Diagnostic ultrasound was very helpful in defining the problem and aiding in the determination of a therapeutic plan. Distention of the blind vaginal pouch with fluid greatly facilitated a surgical solution to the problem and has applicability to other forms of vaginal atresia.

This article reviews the research and clinical literature that has investigated the topography and functions of eye-to-face gaze in normal children and adults. These data and data from a recent pilot study are then compared to the criteria typically used in eye-contact training programs with autistic children. This comparison reveals some educationally relevant discrepancies between the normative data and the training criteria. The need to base educational interventions for autistic individuals on normative standards is discussed, and suggestions for future research are provided.

The binding of 125I-Bolton Hunter-cholecystokinin octapeptide (125I-BH-CCK-8) to small cell lung cancer cell lines was investigated. 125I-BH-CCK-8 bound with high affinity (Kd = 2.4 nM) to an apparent single class of sites (1700/cell) using cell line NCI-H209. Binding was time dependent and the ratio of specific/nonspecific binding was 8/1. Pharmacology studies indicated that gastrin, caerulein, CCK-33 and nonsulfated CCK-8 were potent inhibitors of specific 125I-BH-CCK-8 binding whereas CCK-26-32-NH2 was not. Because CCK receptors are present on small cell lung cancer cells, CCK may function as a regulatory peptide in this disease.
