Abstract

The room-temperature synthesis of a new two-dimensional (2D) zirconium-containing carbide, Zr3C2Tz MXene is presented. In contrast to traditional preparation of MXene, the layered ternary Zr3Al3C5 material instead of MAX phases is used as source under hydrofluoric acid treatment. The structural, mechanical, and electronic properties of the synthesized 2D carbide are investigated, combined with first-principles density functional calculations. A comparative study on the structrual stability of our obtained 2D Zr3C2Tz and Ti3C2Tz MXenes at elevated temperatures is performed. The obtained 2D Zr3C2Tz exhibits relatively better ability to maintain 2D nature and strucural integrity compared to Ti-based Mxene. The difference in structural stability under high temperature condition is explained by a theoretical investigation on binding energy. Abstract

Hypertension increases expression of growth factors and MHC II in chronic allograft nephropathy.BackgroundHypertension of the recipient is strongly associated with chronic allograft nephropathy. It is unclear, however, whether hypertension is the cause or the consequence of chronic allograft nephropathy.MethodsThe present study was performed in the Fisher to Lewis rat kidney transplant model. Transplanted rats (N = eight in each group) received either no treatment or were made hypertensive by administration of deoxycorticosteron acetate (DOCA) and salt. Proteinuria and systolic blood pressure was measured monthly, grafts were harvested at 3 and 6 months for semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and for immunohistology.ResultsSystolic blood pressure was markedly elevated in rats receiving DOCA/salt. Allografts of hypertensive animals contained significantly more cells expressing the proliferating cell nuclear antigen compared to isografts and to allografts from normotensive animals (P < 0.05). Histologic staining and mRNA expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) II was markedly increased in allografts of hypertensive animals compared to all other groups (P < 0.05). Expression of mRNA for platelet-derived growth factor-B (PDGF-B), transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and collagen was higher in allografts than in isografts and was highest in hypertensive animals.ConclusionWe conclude that hypertension augments the expression of growth factors in the allograft possibly aggravating the intimal hyperplasia observed in chronic allograft nephropathy. By increasing the expression of MHC II antigens, hypertension may render the allograft more susceptible to alloantigen-dependent damage. Hypertension and alloantigen-dependent factors appear to exert additive or synergistic effects on inflammatory pathways leading to graft injury.

133. Aggregation induced emission based fluorescence pH and temperature sensors: probing polymer interactions in poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-tetra(phenyl)ethene acrylate)/poly(methacrylic acid) interpenetrating polymer networks

Abstract

Aggregation induced emission (AIE) active copolymers P1-P6 with high molecular weights (14 000 - 17 000) and low polydispersity indices (1.3-1.4) were prepared through copolymerization of N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) and tetra(phenyl) ethene (TPE)-based acrylate monomers. Copolymers P1-P6 show comparable thermal stability to poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), while their glass transition temperatures are higher by 7-9 degrees C than those of pristine PNIPAM. Copolymers P1-P6 are soluble in common organic solvents as well as in water. They retain a similar thermal sensitivity to PNIPAM, but their lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) are reduced with increase of TPE content. By changing the molar ratio of P1-P6/poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) and pH, complexes P1-P6-PMMA were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The complexes are non-emissive in THF, and their fluorescence can be turned on upon addition of water. Moreover, their fluorescence is enhanced with the decrease in pH values due to the formation of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) through inter-polymer hydrogen bonding. Fluorescence spectroscopy and DLS results also reveal that the phase transition behaviour of IPNs upon heating could be significantly modified by pH change. Reduction in the pH value from 7.0 to 4.0 leads to the decrease in LSCT of IPNs by up to 5 1C with respect to PNIPAM. By tuning the pH value to dissociate the formed inter-polymer hydrogen bonds, the formed IPNs would be able to fold cooperatively to a compact structure without a loss of solubility at temperatures below the LCST. Thus, these novel IPNs with AIE active moieties would be used as drug delivery systems, in which the release process could be readily monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy.

Abstract

A microporous hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) derived from a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) intermediate and an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogen tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative has been synthesized and structurally characterized by various methods. This unique HOF exhibits a permanent porosity with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 101.9 m2 g-1. This HOF could be well dispersed in organic solvents in the form of nanoparticles with a size of a few hundred nanometers. These nanoparticles are highly fluorescent in organic solution, and exhibit a high fluorescence quenching selectivity towards copper ions. Furthermore, the fluorescence of this HOF could be recovered by the removal of copper ions upon addition of cyanide and, more interestingly, this process could be repeated several times without considerably sacrificing the sensing activity towards copper ions. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

135. Cultivation Technique of Seedling Used for Raw Material of Fetal Tea

Abstract

Fetal tea is a new type of tea made from seedling before its big euphylla come into leaf. So the yield and quality of seedling used for raw material of fetal tea directly affect the fetal tea yield and quality; the main purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of full light, half light and dark conditions on the growth of seedling used for raw material of fetal tea, and to provide a reference basis for the production of seedling with high quality. The tea tree seeds were cultivated with water under full light, half light and dark conditions, respectively; Then quadrats were set to observed regularly germination state of seed, growth of baconic and germ, meanwhile growth of root, stem, leaf, euphylla of “germ seedling”; By comparing the difference between different illumination conditions, the appropriate light conditions were selected as follows. The number and speed of seed crack were 27.0% and 63.4% higher under full light than under dark conditions and half light, respectively; Meanwhile the number of seed crack was 28.6% higher under dark conditions than under half light. As a result, the full light was the best for cultivating seedling used for fetal tea, dark condition was middle, and half light was worst. The baconic elongation of seed were 87.7% and 93.7% higher under full light than half light and dark condition, respectively, while 3.1% higher under half light than dark condition; therefore, full light was the best condition to promote baconic growth, half light was second, dark condition was the worst. The growth length of germ were 76.0% and 92.0% lower under half light and under dark condition than under full light, respectively, while 66.6% lower under dark condition than under half light, hence, full light was the best condition to promote germ growth, half light was second, and dark condition is the worst. Based on above results, it was concluded that cultivating tea seed with water under full light can obtain higher output of seedling used for raw material of fetal tea.

Electrospun aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-based copolymer films exhibit an approximately 9-fold increase in response to explosive vapors compared to dense films although porous copolymer films have a thickness as high as 560 +/- 60 nm.
