Abstract

Procalcitonin (PCT) and presepsin (PSEP) are sepsis markers, but their diagnostic accuracy may be compromised in acute kidney injury (AKI). We evaluated their diagnostic accuracy in patients with/without AKI. This retrospective study comprised 91 patients with at least one criterion of systematic inflammatory response syndrome. AKI markers plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), plasma cystatin C (CysC), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were measured upon hospital admission and on days 1, 3, 5, and 7. Patients were divided into non-AKI and AKI groups. APACHE II severity scores were determined. PCT and PSEP levels were increased significantly in non-AKI and AKI patients with infection. NGAL, CysC, and eGFR in patients with infection were associated with PCT, PSEP, and APACHE II score, and levels of PCT and PSEP were correlated significantly with disease severity. PCT and PSEP are useful markers of bacterial infections in AKI but different thresholds should be applied.

Abstract

We present 12 mm Mopra observations of the dense (>10^3 cm^-3 ) molecular gas towards the north-east (NE) of the W28 supernova remnant (SNR). This cloud is spatially well-matched to the TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1801-233 and is known to be a SNR-molecular cloud interaction region. Shock-disruption is evident from broad NH3 (1,1) spectral line-widths in regions towards the W28 SNR, while strong detections of spatially-extended NH3(3,3), NH3(4,4) and NH3(6,6) inversion emission towards the cloud strengthen the case for the existence of high temperatures within the cloud. Velocity dispersion measurements and NH3(n,n)/(1,1) ratio maps, where n=2, 3, 4 and 6, indicate that the source of disruption is from the side of the cloud nearest to the W28 SNR, suggesting that it is the source of cloud-disruption. Towards part of the cloud, the ratio of ortho to para-NH3 is observed to exceed 2, suggesting gas-phase NH3 enrichment due to NH3 liberation from dust grain mantles. The measured NH3 abundance with respect to H2 is ~(1.2+/-0.5)*10^-9, which is not high, as might be expected for a hot, dense molecular cloud enriched by sublimated grain-surface molecules. The results are suggestive of NH3 sublimation and destruction in this molecular cloud, which is likely to be interacting with the W28 SNR shock., 16 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Astronomical Society (MNRAS)

Abstract

HESS J1825-137 is a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) whose TeV emission extends across ~1 deg. Its large asymmetric shape indicates that its progenitor supernova interacted with a molecular cloud located in the north of the PWN as detected by previous CO Galactic survey (e.g Lemiere, Terrier & Djannati-Ata\"i 2006). Here we provide a detailed picture of the ISM towards the region north of HESS J1825-137, with the analysis of the dense molecular gas from our 7mm and 12mm Mopra survey and the more diffuse molecular gas from the Nanten CO(1-0) and GRS $^{13}$CO(1-0) surveys. Our focus is the possible association between HESS J1825-137 and the unidentified TeV source to the north, HESS J1826-130. We report several dense molecular regions whose kinematic distance matched the dispersion measured distance of the pulsar. Among them, the dense molecular gas located at (RA, Dec)=(18.421h,-13.282$^{\circ}$) shows enhanced turbulence and we suggest that the velocity structure in this region may be explained by a cloud-cloud collision scenario. Furthermore, the presence of a H$\alpha$ rim may be the first evidence of the progenitor SNR of the pulsar PSR J1826-1334 as the distance between the H$\alpha$ rim and the TeV source matched with the predicted SNR radius R$_{\text{SNR}}$~120 pc. From our ISM study, we identify a few plausible origins of the HESS J1826-130 emission, including the progenitor SNR of PSR J1826-1334 and the PWN G018.5-0.4 powered by PSR J1826-1256. Abstract

RX J1713.7-3946 is a unique core-collapse SNR that emits bright TeV gamma-rays and synchrotron X-rays caused by cosmic rays, in addition to interactions with interstellar gas clouds. We report here on results of ALMA $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) observations toward the northwestern shell of the SNR. We newly found three molecular complexes consisting of dozens of shocked molecular cloudlets and filaments with typical radii of $\sim$0.03-0.05 pc and densities of $\sim$$10^4$ cm$^{-3}$. These cloudlets and filaments are located not only along synchrotron X-ray filaments, but also in the vicinity of X-ray hotspots with month or year-scale time variations. We argue that X-ray hotspots were generated by shock-cloudlet interactions through magnetic-field amplification up to mG. The ISM density contrast of $\sim$$10^5$, coexistence of molecular cloudlets and low-density diffuse medium of $\sim$0.1 cm$^{-3}$, is consistent with such a magnetic field amplification as well as a wind-bubble scenario. Abstract

An accurate estimate of the interstellar gas density distribution is crucial to understanding the interstellar medium (ISM) and Galactic cosmic rays (CRs). To comprehend the ISM and CRs in a local environment, a study of the diffuse $\gamma$-ray emission in a mid-latitude region of the third quadrant was performed. The $\gamma$-ray data in the 0.1--25.6~GeV energy range of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and other interstellar gas tracers such as the HI4PI survey data and the Planck dust thermal emission model were used, and the northern and southern regions were analyzed separately. The variation of the dust emission Dem with the total neutral gas column density NH was studied in high dust-temperature areas, and the NH/Dem ratio was calibrated using $\gamma$-ray data under the assumption of a uniform CR intensity in the studied regions. The measured integrated $\gamma$-ray emissivities above 100~MeV are $(1.58\pm0.04)\times10^{-26}~\mathrm{photons~s^{-1}~sr^{-1}~H\mbox{-}atom^{-1}}$ and $(1.59\pm0.02)\times10^{-26}~\mathrm{photons~s^{-1}~sr^{-1}~H\mbox{-}atom^{-1}}$ in the northern and southern regions, respectively, supporting the existence of a uniform CR intensity in the vicinity of the solar system. While most of the gas can be interpreted to be HI with a spin temperature of $T_\mathrm{S} = 125~\mathrm{K}$ or higher, an area dominated by optically thick HI with $T_\mathrm{S} \sim 40~\mathrm{K}$ was identified., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

The Galactic supernova remnant HESS J1534-571 (also known as G323.7-1.0) has a shell-like morphology in TeV gamma-ray emission and is a key object in the study of cosmic ray origin. Little is known about its distance and local environment. We examine Mopra $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO(1-0) data, Australian Telescope Compact Array HI, and Parkes HI data towards HESS J1534-571. We trace molecular clouds in at least five velocity ranges, including clumpy interstellar medium structures near a dip in HI emission at a kinematic velocity consistent with the Scutum-Crux arm at ~3.5 kpc. This feature may be a cavity blown-out by the progenitor star, a scenario that suggests HESS J1534-571 resulted from a core-collapse event. By employing parametrisations fitted to a sample of supernova remnants of known distance, we find that the radio continuum brightness of HESS J1534-571 is consistent with the ~3.5 kpc kinematic distance of the Scutum-Crux arm HI dip. Modelling of the supernova evolution suggests an ~8-24 kyr age for HESS J1534-571 at this distance., 16 pages, 10 Figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

N49 (LHA 120-N49) is a bright X-ray supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We present new $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 3-2), HI, and 1.4 GHz radio-continuum observations of the SNR N49 using Mopra, ASTE, ALMA, and ATCA. We have newly identified three HI clouds using ATCA with an angular resolution of ~20": one associated with the SNR and the others located in front of the SNR. Both the CO and HI clouds in the velocity range from 280-291 km s$^{-1}$ are spatially correlated with both the soft X-rays (0.2-1.2 keV) and the hard X-rays (2.0-7.0 keV) of N49 on a ~10 pc scale. CO 3-2/1-0 intensity ratios indicate higher values of the CO cloud toward the SNR shell with an angular resolution of ~45", and thus a strong interaction was suggested. Using the ALMA, we have spatially resolved CO clumps embedded within or along the southeastern rim of N49 with an angular resolution of ~3''. Three of the CO clumps are rim-brightened on a 0.7-2 pc scale in both hard X-rays and the radio continuum$:$ this provides further evidence for dynamical interactions between the CO clumps and the SNR shock wave. The enhancement of the radio synchrotron radiation can be understood in terms of magnetic-field amplification around the CO clumps via a shock-cloud interaction. We also present a possible scenario in which the recombining plasma that dominates the hard X-rays from N49 was formed via thermal conduction between the SNR shock waves and the cold$/$dense molecular clumps., 28 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Abstract

High-mass star formation is an important step which controls galactic evolution. GM 24 is a heavily obscured star cluster including a single O9 star with more than $\sim$100 lower mass stars within a 0.3 pc radius toward $(l,b)\sim$ (350.$^{\circ}$5, 0.$^{\circ}$96), close to the Galactic min-starburst NGC 6334. We found two velocity components associated with the cluster by new observations of $^{12}$CO $J=$ 2-1 emission, whereas the cloud was previously considered to be single. We found the distribution of the two components of $5$ km s$^{-1}$ separation shows complementary distribution which fits well with each other, if a relative displacement of 3 pc is applied along the Galactic plane. A position-velocity diagram of the GM 24 cloud is explained by a model based on the numerical simulations of two colliding clouds, where an intermediate velocity component created by collision is taken into account. We estimate the collision time scale to be $\sim$Myr in projection of a relative motion titled to the line of sight by 45 degrees. Abstract

N44 is the second active site of high mass star formation next to R136 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We carried out a detailed analysis of HI at 60 arcsec resolution by using the ATCA & Parkes data. We presented decomposition of the HI emission into two velocity components (the L- and D-components) with the velocity separation of 60 km s$^{-1}$. In addition, we newly defined the I-component whose velocity is intermediate between the L- and D-components. The D-component was used to derive the rotation curve of the LMC disk, which is consistent with the stellar rotation curve (Alves et al. 2000). Toward the active cluster forming region of LHA 120-N 44, the three velocity components of HI gas show signatures of dynamical interaction including bridges and complementary spatial distributions. We hypothesize that the L- and D-components have been colliding with each other since 5 Myrs ago and the interaction triggered formation of the O and early B stars ionizing N44. In the hypothesis the I-component is interpreted as decelerated gas in terms of momentum exchange in the collisional interaction of the L- and D-components. In the N44 region the Planck sub-mm dust optical depth is correlated with the HI intensity, which is well approximated by a linear regression. We found that the N44 region shows a significantly steeper regression line than in the Bar region indicating less dust abundance in the N44 region, which is ascribed to the tidal interaction between the LMC with the SMC 0.2 Gyrs ago., 36 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables, accepted to the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Abstract

Formation mechanism of a supergiant H II region NGC 604 is discussed in terms of collision of H I clouds in M33. An analysis of the archival H I data obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA) reveals complex velocity distributions around NGC 604. The H I clouds are composed of two velocity components separated by ~ 20 km s^-1 for an extent of ~ 700 pc, beyond the size of the the H II region. Although the H I clouds are not easily separated in velocity with some mixed component represented by merged line profiles, the atomic gas mass amounts to 6 x 10^6 M_Sol and 9 x 10^6 M_Sol for each component. These characteristics of H I gas and the distributions of dense molecular gas in the overlapping regions of the two velocity components suggest that the formation of giant molecular clouds and the following massive cluster formation have been induced by the collision of H I clouds with different velocities. Referring to the existence of gas bridging feature connecting M33 with M31 reported by large-scale HI surveys, the disturbed atomic gas possibly represent the result of past tidal interaction between the two galaxies, which is analogous to the formation of the R136 cluster in the LMC., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan

Abstract

Polarized emission from aligned dust is a crucial tool for studies of magnetism in the ISM and a troublesome contaminant for studies of CMB polarization. In each case, an understanding of the significance of the polarization signal requires well-calibrated physical models of dust grains. Despite decades of progress in theory and observation, polarized dust models remain largely underconstrained. During its 2012 flight, the balloon-borne telescope BLASTPol obtained simultaneous broad-band polarimetric maps of a translucent molecular cloud at 250, 350, and 500 microns. Combining these data with polarimetry from the Planck 850 micron band, we have produced a submillimeter polarization spectrum for a cloud of this type for the first time. We find the polarization degree to be largely constant across the four bands. This result introduces a new observable with the potential to place strong empirical constraints on ISM dust polarization models in a previously inaccessible density regime. Comparing with models by Draine and Fraisse (2009), our result disfavors two of their models for which all polarization arises due only to aligned silicate grains. By creating simple models for polarized emission in a translucent cloud, we verify that extinction within the cloud should have only a small effect on the polarization spectrum shape compared to the diffuse ISM. Thus we expect the measured polarization spectrum to be a valid check on diffuse ISM dust models. The general flatness of the observed polarization spectrum suggests a challenge to models where temperature and alignment degree are strongly correlated across major dust components., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures. Abstract

We present the ALMA observations of CO isotopes and 1.3 mm continuum emission toward the N159E-Papillon Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The spatial resolution is 0"25-0"28 (0.06-0.07 pc), which is a factor of 3 higher than the previous ALMA observations in this region. The high resolution allowed us to resolve highly filamentary CO distributions with typical widths of $\sim$0.1 pc (full width half maximum) and line masses of a few 100 $M_{\odot}$ pc$^{-1}$. The filaments (more than ten in number) show an outstanding hub-filament structure emanating from the nebular center toward the north. We identified for the first time two massive protostellar outflows of $\sim$10$^4$ yr dynamical age along one of the most massive filaments. The observations also revealed several pillar-like CO features around the Nebula. The H II region and the pillars have a complementary spatial distribution and the column density of the pillars is an order of magnitude higher than that of the pillars in the Eagle nebula (M16) in the Galaxy, suggesting an early stage of pillar formation with an age younger than $\sim$10$^5$ yr. We suggest that a cloud-cloud collision triggered the formation of the filaments and protostar within the last $\sim$2 Myr. It is possible that the collision is more recent, as part of the kpc-scale H I flows come from the tidal interaction resulting from the close encounter between the LMC and SMC $\sim$200 Myr ago as suggested for R136 by Fukui et al., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We have performed a multi-wavelength study of the mid-infrared bubble S44 to investigate the origin of isolated high-mass star(s) and the star-formation process around the bubble formed by the HII region. In this paper, we report the results of new CO observations ($^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO $J=$1-0, and $^{12}$CO $J=$3-2) toward the isolated bubble S44 using the NANTEN2, Mopra, and ASTE radio telescopes. We found two velocity components in the direction of the bubble, at $-84$ km s$^{-1}$ and $-79$ km s$^{-1}$. These two clouds are likely to be physically associated with the bubble,both because of the enhanced $^{12}$CO $J=$3-2/1-0 intensity ratio from a ring-like structure affected by ultraviolet radiation from embedded high-mass star(s) and from the morphological correspondence between the 8 $\mu$m emission and the CO distribution. Assuming a single object, we estimate the spectral type of the embedded star inside the bubble to be O8.5-9 ($\sim 20 M_{\odot}$) from the radio-continuum free-free emission. We hypothesize that the two clouds collided with each other 3 Myr ago, triggering the formation of the isolated high-mass star in S44, as also occurred with RCW 120 and RCW 79. Abstract

We carry out spatially resolved spectral analysis with a physical scale of $\sim$10 pc in X-ray for the superbubble 30 Dor C, which has the largest diameter of $\sim$80 pc and the brightest non-thermal emission in superbubbles for the first time. We aim at investigating spatial variation of the physical properties of non-thermal emission as detected in some supernova remnants in order to study particle acceleration in a superbubble. We demonstrated that non-thermal components are detected in all the regions covering the entire field of 30 Dor C. The spectra in the west region of 30 Dor C can be described with a combination of the thermal and non-thermal components while the spectra in the east region can be fitted with the non-thermal component alone. The photon index and absorption corrected intensity in 2-10 keV of the non-thermal component show spatial variation from $\sim$2.0 to $\sim$3.7 and (4-130) $\times$ 10$^{-8}$ erg~s$^{-1}$~cm$^{-2}$~str$^{-1}$, respectively, and the negative correlation between the non-thermal physical properties is observed. The temperature and normalization of the thermal component also vary within a range of $\sim$0.2-0.3 keV and $\sim$0.2-7 $\times$ 10$^{17}$ cm$^{-5}$ str$^{-1}$, respectively, and the positive correlation between the photon index and the normalization is also detected. We revealed the correlations in a supperbubble for the first time as is the case in SNRs, which suggests the possibility that the same acceleration mechanism works also in the supperbubble., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

A new extended gamma-ray source, which was named as Source A, in the southwest of Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G306.3$-$0.9 was detected with a significance of $\sim$13$\sigma$ at the location of R.A. (J2000) = 13$^{\rm{h}}$ 17$^{\rm{m}}$ 52$^{\rm{s}\!\!}$.80, Decl. (J2000) = $-$63$^{\circ}$ 55$'$ 48$"\!\!$.00 using about 9 years of Fermi-LAT data. In order to investigate this unidentified gamma-ray source in multi-wavelengths, we performed Swift observations of Source A. Abstract

By performing a global magneto-hydrodynamical simulation for the Milky Way with an axisymmetric gravitational potential, we propose that spatially dependent amplification of magnetic fields possibly explains the observed noncircular motion of the gas in the Galactic center region. The radial distribution of the rotation frequency in the bulge region is not monotonic in general. The amplification of the magnetic field is enhanced in regions with stronger differential rotation, because magnetorotational instability and field-line stretching are more effective. The strength of the amplified magnetic field reaches >~ 0.5 mG, and radial flows of the gas are excited by the inhomogeneous transport of angular momentum through turbulent magnetic field that is amplified in a spatially dependent manner. In addition, the magnetic pressure-gradient force also drives radial flows in a similar manner. As a result, the simulated position-velocity diagram exhibits a time-dependent asymmetric parallelogram-shape owing to the intermittency of the magnetic turbulence; the present model provides a viable alternative to the bar-potential-driven model for the parallelogram-shape of the central molecular zone. This is a natural extension into the central few 100 pc of the magnetic activity, which is observed as molecular loops at radii from a few 100 pc to 1 kpc. Abstract

We investigate the longevity of broad bridge features in position-velocity diagrams that appear as a result of cloud-cloud collisions. Broad bridges will have a finite lifetime due to the action of feedback, conversion of gas into stars and the timescale of the collision. We make a series of analytic arguments with which to estimate these lifetimes. Our simple analytic arguments suggest that for collisions between clouds larger than R~10 pc the lifetime of the broad bridge is more likely to be determined by the lifetime of the collision rather than the radiative or wind feedback disruption timescale. However for smaller clouds feedback becomes much more effective. This is because the radiative feedback timescale scales with the ionising flux Nly as R^{7/4}Nly^{-1/4} so a reduction in cloud size requires a relatively large decrease in ionising photons to maintain a given timescale. We find that our analytic arguments are consistent with new synthetic observations of numerical simulations of cloud-cloud collisions (including star formation and radiative feedback). We also argue that if the number of observable broad bridges remains ~ constant, then the disruption timescale must be roughly equivalent to the collision rate. If this is the case our analytic arguments also provide collision rate estimates, which we find are readily consistent with previous theoretical models at the scales they consider (clouds larger than about 10 pc) but are much higher for smaller clouds., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the MNRAS main journal

Abstract

RCW 38 is the youngest super star cluster in the Galaxy and is located at a distance of 1.7 kpc. Molecular observations revealed that the cluster is associated with two molecular clouds having velocity difference of 12 km s−1. We interpret that the two clouds are colliding with each other and the collision triggered the cluster formation. The natal molecular gas still survives within ~ 0.5 pc of the central O stars which have an age of 0.1 Myrs as inferred from the collision morphology. We suggest that the high column density of one of the clouds 1023 cm−2 enabled formation of ~ 20 O stars in the cluster center and discuss the implications on massive cluster formation.

Abstract

HESS J1614$-$518 and HESS J1616$-$508 are two tera-electron volt (TeV) $\gamma$-ray sources that are not firmly associated with any known counterparts at other wavelengths. We investigate the distribution of interstellar medium towards the TeV $\gamma$-ray sources using results from a 7 mm-wavelength Mopra study, the Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey, the Millimetre Astronomer's Legacy Team - 45 GHz survey and [CI] data from the HEAT telescope. Data in the CO(1$-$0) transition lines reveal diffuse gas overlapping the two TeV sources at several velocities along the line of sight, while observations in the CS(1$-$0) transition line reveal several interesting dense gas features. To account for the diffuse atomic gas, archival HI data was taken from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. The observations reveal gas components with masses $\sim10^3$ to $10^5$ M$_\odot$ and with densities $\sim10^2$ to $10^3$ cm$^{-3}$ overlapping the two TeV sources. Several origin scenarios potentially associated with the TeV $\gamma$-ray sources are discussed in light of the distribution of the local interstellar medium. Abstract

We report an observational study of the giant molecular cloud (GMC) associated with the Galactic infrared ring-like structure N35 and two nearby HII regions G024.392+00.072 (HII region A) and G024.510-00.060 (HII region B), using the new CO J=1-0 data obtained as a part of the FOREST Unbiased Galactic Plane Imaging survey with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope (FUGIN) project at a spatial resolution of 21". Our CO data revealed that the GMC, with a total molecular mass of 2.1x10^6Mo, has two velocity components over ~10-15km/s. The majority of molecular gas in the GMC is included in the lower-velocity component (LVC) at ~110-114km/s, while the higher-velocity components (HVCs) at ~118-126km/s consist of three smaller molecular clouds which are located near the three HII regions. The LVC and HVCs show spatially complementary distributions along the line-of-sight, despite large velocity separations of ~5-15km/s, and are connected in velocity by the CO emission with intermediate intensities. By comparing the observations with simulations, we discuss a scenario where collisions of the three HVCs with LVC at velocities of ~10-15km/s can provide an interpretation of these two observational signatures. The intermediate velocity features between the LVC and HVCs can be understood as broad bridge features, which indicate the turbulent motion of the gas at the collision interfaces, while the spatially complementary distributions represent the cavities created in the LVC by the HVCs through the collisions. Our model indicates that the three HII regions were formed after the onset of the collisions, and it is therefore suggested that the high-mass star formation in the GMC was triggered by the collisions., 30 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Abstract

We have analyzed the atomic and molecular gas using the 21 cm HI and 2.6/1.3 mm CO emissions toward the young supernova remnant (SNR) RCW 86 in order to identify the interstellar medium with which the shock waves of the SNR interact. We have found an HI intensity depression in the velocity range between $-46$ and $-28$ km s$^{-1}$ toward the SNR, suggesting a cavity in the interstellar medium. The HI cavity coincides with the thermal and non-thermal emitting X-ray shell. The thermal X-rays are coincident with the edge of the HI distribution, which indicates a strong density gradient, while the non-thermal X-rays are found toward the less dense, inner part of the HI cavity. The most significant non-thermal X-rays are seen toward the southwestern part of the shell where the HI gas traces the dense and cold component. We also identified CO clouds which are likely interacting with the SNR shock waves in the same velocity range as the HI, although the CO clouds are distributed only in a limited part of the SNR shell. The most massive cloud is located in the southeastern part of the shell, showing detailed correspondence with the thermal X-rays. These CO clouds show an enhanced CO $J$ = 2-1/1-0 intensity ratio, suggesting heating/compression by the shock front. We interpret that the shock-cloud interaction enhances non-thermal X-rays in the southwest and the thermal X-rays are emitted by the shock-heated gas of density 10-100 cm$^{-3}$. Moreover, we can clearly see an HI envelope around the CO cloud, suggesting that the progenitor had a weaker wind than the massive progenitor of the core-collapse SNR RX J1713.7$-$3949. Abstract

We present high-resolution (sub-parsec) observations of a giant molecular cloud in the nearest star-forming galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud. ALMA Band 6 observations trace the bulk of the molecular gas in $^{12}$CO(2-1) and high column density regions in $^{13}$CO(2-1). Our target is a quiescent cloud (PGCC G282.98-32.40, which we refer to as the "Planck cold cloud" or PCC) in the southern outskirts of the galaxy where star-formation activity is very low and largely confined to one location. We decompose the cloud into structures using a dendrogram and apply an identical analysis to matched-resolution cubes of the 30 Doradus molecular cloud (located near intense star formation) for comparison. Structures in the PCC exhibit roughly 10 times lower surface density and 5 times lower velocity dispersion than comparably sized structures in 30 Dor, underscoring the non-universality of molecular cloud properties. In both clouds, structures with relatively higher surface density lie closer to simple virial equilibrium, whereas lower surface density structures tend to exhibit super-virial line widths. In the PCC, relatively high line widths are found in the vicinity of an infrared source whose properties are consistent with a luminous young stellar object. More generally, we find that the smallest resolved structures ("leaves") of the dendrogram span close to the full range of line widths observed across all scales. As a result, while the bulk of the kinetic energy is found on the largest scales, the small-scale energetics tend to be dominated by only a few structures, leading to substantial scatter in observed size-linewidth relationships., Accepted by ApJ; 21 pages in AASTeX two-column style

Abstract

We carried out a molecular line study toward the three Spitzer bubbles S116, S117 and S118 which show active formation of high-mass stars. We found molecular gas consisting of two components with velocity difference of {$\sim 5$ \kms}. One of them, the small cloud, has typical velocity of {$-63$ \kms} \ and the other, the large cloud, has that of $-58$ \kms. The large cloud has a nearly circular intensity depression whose size is similar to the small cloud. We present an interpretation that the cavity was created by a collision between the two clouds and the collision compressed the gas into a dense layer elongated along the western rim of the small cloud. In this scenario, the O stars including those in the three Spitzer bubbles were formed in the interface layer compressed by the collision. By assuming that the relative motion of the clouds has a tilt of \timeform{45D} to the line of sight, we estimate that the collision continued over the last 1 Myr at relative velocity of $\sim$10 \kms. In the S116--117--118 system the \HII \ regions are located outside of the cavity. This morphology is ascribed to the density-bound distribution of the large cloud which made the \HII \ regions more easily expand toward the outer part of the large cloud than inside of the cavity. The present case proves that a cloud-cloud collision creates a cavity without an action of O star feedback, and suggests that the collision-compressed layer is highly filamentary., 23 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Understanding of massive cluster formation is one of the important issues of astronomy. By analyzing the HI data, we have identified that the two HI velocity components (L- and D-components) are colliding toward the HI Ridge, in the southeastern end of the LMC, which hosts the young massive cluster R136 and $\sim$400 O/WR stars (Doran et al. 2013) including the progenitor of SN1987A. The collision is possibly evidenced by bridge features connecting the two HI components and complementary distributions between them. We frame a hypothesis that the collision triggered the formation of R136 and the surrounding high-mass stars as well as the HI & Molecular Ridge. Fujimoto & Noguchi (1990) advocated that the last tidal interaction between the LMC and the SMC about 0.2 Gyr ago induced collision of the L- and D-components. This model is consistent with numerical simulations (Bekki & Chiba 2007b). We suggest that a dense HI partly CO cloud of 10$^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$, a precursor of R136, was formed at the shock-compressed interface between the colliding L- and D-components. We suggest that part of the low-metalicity gas from the SMC was mixed in the tidal interaction based on the $Planck/IRAS$ data of dust optical depth (Planck Collaboration et al. 2014)., 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted to Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan

Abstract

We present a large-scale combination of near-infrared (near-IR) interstellar polarization data from background starlight with polarized emission data at submillimeter (sub-mm) wavelengths for the Vela C molecular cloud. The near-IR data consist of more than 6700 detections probing a range of visual extinctions between $2$ and $20\,$mag in and around the cloud. The sub-mm data was collected in Antartica by the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol). This is the first direct combination of near-IR and sub-mm polarization data for a molecular cloud aimed at measuring the "polarization efficiency ratio" ($R_{\mathrm{eff}}$), a quantity that is expected to depend only on grain intrinsic physical properties. It is defined as $p_{500}/(p_{I}/\tau_{V})$, where $p_{500}$ and $p_{I}$ are polarization fractions at $500\,\mu$m and $I$-band, respectively, and $\tau_{V}$ is the optical depth. To ensure that the same column density of material is producing both polarization from emission and from extinction, we conducted a careful selection of near-background stars using 2MASS, $Herschel$ and $Planck$ data. This selection excludes objects contaminated by the Galactic diffuse background material as well as objects located in the foreground. Accounting for statistical and systematic uncertainties, we estimate an average $R_{\mathrm{eff}}$ value of $2.4\pm0.8$, which can be used to test the predictions of dust grain models designed for molecular clouds when such predictions become available. $R_{\mathrm{eff}}$ appears to be relatively flat as a function of the cloud depth for the range of visual extinctions probed., Comment: 23 pages, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

International audience; We present the ALMA Band 3 and Band 6 results of 12CO(2-1), 13CO(2-1), H30α recombination line, free-free emission around 98 GHz, and the dust thermal emission around 230 GHz toward the N159 East Giant Molecular Cloud (N159E) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). LMC is the nearest active high-mass star-forming face-on galaxy at a distance of 50 kpc and is the best target for studing high-mass star formation. ALMA observations show that N159E is the complex of filamentary clouds with the width and length of ˜1 pc and several parsecs. The total molecular mass is 0.92 × 105 M⊙ from the 13CO(2-1) intensity. N159E harbors the well-known Papillon Nebula, a compact high-excitation H II region. We found that a YSO associated with the Papillon Nebula has the mass of 35 M⊙ and is located at the intersection of three filamentary clouds. It indicates that the formation of the high-mass YSO was induced by the collision of filamentary clouds. Fukui et al. reported a similar kinematic structure toward two YSOs in the N159 West region, which are the other YSOs that have the mass of ≳35 M⊙. This suggests that the collision of filamentary clouds is a primary mechanism of high-mass star formation. We found a small molecular hole around the YSO in Papillon Nebula with a sub-parsec scale. It is filled by free-free and H30α emission. The temperature of the molecular gas around the hole reaches ˜80 K. It indicates that this YSO has just started the distruction of parental molecular cloud.

Abstract

The Orion Nebula Cluster toward the HII region M42 is the most outstanding young cluster at the smallest distance 410pc among the rich high-mass stellar clusters. By newly analyzing the archival molecular data of the 12CO(J=1-0) emission at 21" resolution, we identified at least three pairs of complementary distributions between two velocity components at 8km/s and 13km/s. We present a hypothesis that the two clouds collided with each other and triggered formation of the high-mass stars, mainly toward two regions including the nearly ten O stars, theta1 Ori and theta2 Ori, in M42 and the B star, NU Ori, in M43. The timescale of the collision is estimated to be ~0.1Myr by a ratio of the cloud size and velocity corrected for projection, which is consistent with the age of the youngest cluster members less than 0.1Myr. The majority of the low-mass cluster members were formed prior to the collision in the last one Myr. We discuss implications of the present hypothesis and the scenario of high-mass star formation by comparing with the other eight cases of triggered O star formation via cloud-cloud collision., 32 pages, 19 figures. Abstract

We analyzed the 2.6-mm CO and 21-cm HI lines toward the Magellanic superbubble 30 Doradus C, in order to reveal the associated molecular and atomic gas. We uncovered five molecular clouds in a velocity range from 251 to 276 km s$^{-1}$ toward the western shell. The non-thermal X-rays are clearly enhanced around the molecular clouds on a pc scale, suggesting possible evidence for magnetic field amplification via shock-cloud interaction. The thermal X-rays are brighter in the eastern shell, where there are no dense molecular or atomic clouds, opposite to the western shell. The TeV $\gamma$-ray distribution may spatially match the total interstellar proton column density as well as the non-thermal X-rays. If the hadronic $\gamma$-ray is dominant, the total energy of the cosmic-ray protons is at least $\sim1.2 \times 10^{50}$ erg with the estimated mean interstellar proton density $\sim60$ cm$^{-3}$. In addition the $\gamma$-ray flux associated with the molecular cloud (e.g., MC3) could be detected and resolved by the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Abstract

Hi-GAL (Herschel InfraRed Galactic Plane Survey) is a large-scale survey of the Galactic plane, performed with Herschel in five infrared continuum bands between 70 and 500 μm. We present a band-merged catalogue of spatially matched sources and their properties derived from fits to the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and heliocentric distances, based on the photometric catalogues presented in Molinari et al., covering the portion of Galactic plane −71 ∘. 0 < ℓ < 67 ∘. 0. The band-merged catalogue contains 100 922 sources with a regular SED, 24 584 of which show a 70-μm counterpart and are thus considered protostellar, while the remainder are considered starless. Thanks to this huge number of sources, we are able to carry out a preliminary analysis of early stages of star formation, identifying the conditions that characterize different evolutionary phases on a statistically significant basis. We calculate surface densities to investigate the gravitational stability of clumps and their potential to form massive stars. We also explore evolutionary status metrics such as the dust temperature, luminosity and bolometric temperature, finding that these are higher in protostellar sources compared to pre-stellar ones. The surface density of sources follows an increasing trend as they evolve from pre-stellar to protostellar, but then it is found to decrease again in the majority of the most evolved clumps. Finally, we study the physical parameters of sources with respect to Galactic longitude and the association with spiral arms, finding only minor or no differences between the average evolutionary status of sources in the fourth and first Galactic quadrants, or between ‘on-arm’ and ‘interarm’ positions. Abstract

We carried out new CO ($J=$1-0, 2-1 and 3-2) observations with NANTEN2 and ASTE in the region of the twin Galactic mini-starbursts NGC 6334 and NGC 6357. We detected two velocity molecular components of 12 km s$^{-1}$ velocity separation, which is continuous over 3 degrees along the plane. In NGC 6334 the two components show similar two-peaked intensity distributions toward the young HII regions and are linked by a bridge feature. In NGC 6357 we found spatially complementary distribution between the two velocity components as well as a bridge feature in velocity. Based on these results we hypothesize that the two clouds in the two regions collided with each other in the past few Myr and triggered formation of the starbursts over $\sim$ 100 pc. We suggest that the formation of the starbursts happened toward the collisional region of $\sim$ 10-pc extents with initial high molecular column densities. For NGC 6334 we present a scenario which includes spatial variation of the colliding epoch due to non-uniform cloud separation. The scenario possibly explains the apparent age difference among the young O stars in NGC 6334 raging from $10^4$ yrs to $10^6$ yrs; the latest collision happened within $10^5$ yrs toward the youngest stars in NGC 6334 I(N) and I which exhibit molecular outflows without HII regions. For NGC 6357 the O stars were formed a few Myrs ago, and the cloud dispersal by the O stars is significant. Abstract

We studied roles of the magnetic field on the gas dynamics in the Galactic bulge by a three-dimensional global magnetohydrodynamical simulation data, particularly focusing on vertical flows that are ubiquitously excited by magnetic activity. In local regions where the magnetic filed is stronger, it is frequently seen that fast down-flows slide along inclined magnetic field lines that are associated with buoyantly rising magnetic loops. The vertical velocity of these down-flows reaches ~ 100 km s$^{-1}$ near the foot-point of the loops by the gravitational acceleration toward the Galactic plane. The two footpoints of rising magnetic loops are generally located at different radial locations and the field lines are deformed by the differential rotation. The angular momentum is transported along the field lines, and the radial force balance breaks down. As a result, a fast downflow is often observed only at the one footpoint located at the inner radial position. The fast downflow compresses the gas to form a dense region near the footpoint, which will be important in star formation afterward. Furthermore, the horizontal components of the velocity are also fast near the foot-point because the down-flow is accelerated along the magnetic sliding slope. Abstract

We carried out synthetic observations of interstellar atomic hydrogen at 21cm wavelength by utilizing the magneto-hydrodynamical numerical simulations of the inhomogeneous turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) Inoue and Inutsuka (2012). The cold neutral medium (CNM) shows significantly clumpy distribution with a small volume filling factor of 3.5%, whereas the warm neutral medium (WNM) distinctly different smooth distribution with a large filling factor of 96.5%. In projection on the sky, the CNM exhibits highly filamentary distribution with a sub-pc width, whereas the WNM shows smooth extended distribution. In the HI optical depth the CNM is dominant and the contribution of the WNM is negligibly small. The CNM has an area covering factor of 30% in projection, while the WNM has a covering factor of 70%. This causes that the emission-absorption measurements toward radio continuum compact sources tend to sample the WNM with a probability of 70%, yielding smaller HI optical depth and smaller HI column density than those of the bulk HI gas. The emission-absorption measurements, which are significantly affected by the small-scale large fluctuations of the CNM properties, are not suitable to characterize the bulk HI gas. Larger-beam emission measurements which are able to fully sample the HI gas will provide a better tool for that purpose, if a reliable proxy for hydrogen column density, possibly dust optical depth and gamma rays, is available., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We present the physical and evolutionary properties of prestellar and protostellar clumps in the Herschel Infrared GALactic plane survey (Hi-GAL) in two large areas centered in the Galactic plane and covering the tips of the long Galactic bar at the intersection with the spiral arms. The areas fall in the longitude ranges 19 < l < 33 and 340 < l < 350, while latitude is -1 < b < 1. Newly formed high mass stars and prestellar objects are identified and their properties derived and compared. A study is also presented on five giant molecular complexes at the further edge of the bar. The star-formation rate was estimated from the quantity of proto-stars expected to form during the collapse of massive turbulent clumps into star clusters. This new method was developed by applying a Monte Carlo procedure to an evolutionary model of turbulent cores and takes into account the wide multiplicity of sources produced during the collapse. The star-formation rate density values at the tips are 1.2 +- 0.3 10-3 Msol/yr/kpc2 and 1.5+-0.3 10-3 Msol/yr/kpc2 in the first and fourth quadrant, respectively. The same values estimated on the entire field of view, that is including the tips of the bar and background and foreground regions, are 0.9+-0.2 10-3 Msol/yr/kpc2 and 0.8+-0.2 10-3 Msol/yr/kpc2. The conversion efficiency is approximately 0.8% in the first quadrant and 0.5% in the fourth quadrant, and does not show a significant difference in proximity of the bar. The star forming regions identified through CO contours at the further edge of the bar show star-formation rate densities larger than the surrounding regions but their conversion efficiencies are comparable. Abstract

The shell-type supernova remnant HESS J1731$-$347 emits TeV gamma-rays, and is a key object for the study of the cosmic ray acceleration potential of supernova remnants. We use 0.5-1 arcminute Mopra CO/CS(1-0) data in conjunction with HI data to calculate column densities towards the HESS J1731$-$347 region. We trace gas within at least four Galactic arms, typically tracing total (atomic+molecular) line-of-sight H column densities of 2-3$\times$10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. Assuming standard X-factor values and that most of the HI/CO emission seen towards HESS J1731$-$347 is on the near-side of the Galaxy, X-ray absorption column densities are consistent with HI+CO-derived column densities foreground to, but not beyond, the Scutum-Crux Galactic arm, suggesting a kinematic distance of $\sim$3.2 kpc for HESS J1731$-$347. At this kinematic distance, we also find dense, infrared-dark gas traced by CS(1-0) emission coincident with the north of HESS J1731$-$347, the nearby HII region G353.43$-$0.37 and the nearby unidentified gamma-ray source HESS J1729$-$345. This dense gas lends weight to the idea that HESS J1729$-$345 and HESS J1731-347 are connected, perhaps via escaping cosmic-rays., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

A new extended gamma-ray source (PS J1934.5+1845) was detected with a significance of $\sim$13$\sigma$ at a location of 1$^{\circ}\!\!$.83 away from the radio location of the Galactic supernova remnant 3C 400.2 using about 9 years of Fermi-LAT data. The 68% containment radius of PS J1934.5+1845's extension was found to be 0$^{\circ}\!\!$.61 and PS J1934.5+1845 is showing a power-law type spectrum with a spectral index of $\sim$2.38. Abstract

The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) has revealed many TeV (10 12 eV) gamma-ray sources along the Galactic Plane and around 30 percent of these sources remain unidentified. The morphology and dynamics of dense gas coincident and surrounding the gamma-ray emission can provide clues about the nature of the TeV emission. The H2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) undertaken with the Mopra radio telescope, includes several dense gas tracers, such as NH3 (n,n) transitions and HC3N (3-2), star formation tracers including H2O masers, and radio recombination lines which trace ionised gas. A search for dense gas, traced by NH3 (1,1) emission seen in HOPS and additional observations, towards Galactic TeV sources has been undertaken. Of the 49 Galactic TeV sources covered by 12 mm observations, NH3 (1,1) is detected towards or adjacent to 38 of them. Dense gas counterparts have been detected near several unidentified Galactic TeV sources which display morphology pointing to a hadronic origin to the TeV gamma-rays. The dense gas detected towards some TeV sources displays unusual emission characteristics, including very broad linewidths and enhanced ortho-to-para NH3 abundance ratios towards HESS J1745-303 and HESS J1801-233, which reflects previous shock activity within the gas., Comment: 24 pages, 26 figures

149. Interstellar gas toward the Magellanic supernova remnants

Abstract

We present new CO observations toward 25 supernova remnants (SNRs) residing with the Large Magellanic Cloud, including the TeV γ-ray sources N132D and 30 Doradus C. Our observations revealed that∼90% of the SNRs were detected by 12CO(J = 1–0) line emission with a 3σ level or higher. At least ten of them were shown to have CO clouds that have a good spatial correspondence with thermal/non-thermal X-rays; this indicates that shock-cloud interactions may have occurred. The molecular gases associated with N132D showed a high intensity ratio of 12CO J = 3–2 / 1–0 > 0.8, indicates that shock-heating occurred. We also found five molecular clouds and three Hi clouds associated with 30 Doradus C, which showed either complimentary or similar distributions to the non-thermal X-ray filaments in a 10 pc scale. The interstellar proton density of 30 Doradus C was estimated to be ∼ 60 cm−3, which corresponded to the total energy of the cosmic-ray protons being at least∼1.2×1050 erg.

Abstract

Using the NANTEN2 Observatory, we carried out a molecular line study of high-mass star forming regions with reflection nebulae, NGC 2068 and NGC 2071, in Orion in the 13CO(J=2-1) transition. The 13CO distribution shows that there are two velocity components at 9.0 and 10.5 km/s . The blue-shifted component is in the northeast associated with NGC 2071, whereas the red-shifted component is in the southwest associated with NGC 2068. The total intensity distribution of the two clouds shows a gap of ~1 pc, suggesting that they are detached at present. A detailed spatial comparison indicates that the two show complementary distributions. The blue-shifted component lies toward an intensity depression to the northwest of the red-shifted component, where we find that a displacement of 0.8 pc makes the two clouds fit well with each other. Furthermore, a new simulation of non-frontal collisions shows that observations from 60 degrees off the collisional axis agreed well with the velocity structure in this region. On the basis of these results, we hypothesize that the two components collided with each other at a projected relative velocity 3.0 km/s estimated to be 0.3 Myr for an assumed axis of the relative motion 60 degrees off the line of sight. We assume that the two most massive early B-type stars in the cloud, illuminating stars of the two reflection nebulae, were formed by collisional triggering at the interfaces between the two clouds. Given the other young high-mass star forming regions, namely, M42, M43, and NGC 2024 (Fukui et al. 2018b; Ohama et al. 2017a), it seems possible that collisional triggering has been independently working to form O-type and early B-type stars in Orion in the last Myr over a projected distance of ~80 pc., Comment: 20 peges, 7 figures
