111. Facilitating research through serendipity of recommendations

Abstract

Recommender systems are used to suggest items that are useful to users. The recommendations can be surprising and may be categorized as serendipitous recommendations. One of the limitations with serendipitous recommendations is that the user interface of such a recommender system rarely supports the user to switch from accuracy orientation to serendipity facilitations. Using serendipitous recommendations can be challenging. This is because the user might not fully benefit from and understand the serendipitous recommendations. One main advantage of this type of system is that a serendipity-oriented recommender system can be used for the supervision of research students. It can help them to find a novel topic in the area of their research interests. This paper reports on a novel user interface design for facilitating serendipitous recommendations generation in educational environments. The user interface of this recommender system provides students with user controls and visualization in order to explore research articles. This research comprises user experience experiments conducted in an academic environment and evaluated by means of a user centered design evaluation. It involves research articles recommender system named JabRef. The recommender systems were used by students at the undergraduate level. Users reported an enhanced user experience while using the user controls and visualization and serendipitous resource discovery. It was found that user interface design can facilitate a serendipity recommender system in the learning environment. University professors supervising students during the research can also benefit from the recommender system.

112. Acknowledgment scheme using cloud for node networks with energy-aware hybrid scheduling strategy

Abstract

Cloud computing is attracting a lot of traffic on the Internet. Due to the distributed nature of the ad hoc networks, there is no clear path for the communication between nodes. Additionally, there is no centralized or master node to guide the rest of the nodes in the distributed networks. Since the networks are continually expanding, it is vital to mention that there is a substantial increase in the number of attacks. As such, we became interested to consider monitoring the wireless network using cloud. This way, we will be able to deal with varies attacks and to provide better guidance for the networks. In this paper, we propose a new approach for acknowledgement scheme, using a one hop cloud technology, called Cloud Acknowledgement Scheme. This approach strengthens the wireless network by introducing cloud as a monitoring tool as well as to act as a leader node. An efficient cloud provisioning needs a better scheduling scheme. Towards this end, this paper is proposing a new approach to support the short-lived nature of acknowledgment packets in an efficient manner. Our proposed approach constitutes of two developed algorithms that act as one. These scheduling algorithms help to accomplish the purpose of cloud acknowledgment scheme. It is also important and significant to consider the cloud’s awareness of energy consumption to reduce the impact on the environment. Towards this end, monitoring energy consumption is achieved by assigning priorities on the given tasks and balancing the performance and the energy of the cloud. The proposed approach is demonstrated and proved as working models using simulations. The results suggest that our proposed approach has the potential to alternate other existing acknowledgement schemes.

Abstract

In this paper, we address the problem of managing driving behaviours within the context of Connected Vehicles (CVs). In contrast with the existing related solutions, we are proposing a Cyber Physical System (CPS) architecture that ultimately enables the continuous acquisition and processing of driving data and then the assessment and classification of driving performance according to a welldefined set of driving states. The transitions between these states are decided based on current and previous driving records. In addition to their use for the generation of the appropriate feedback to the driver, the driving states could be used to identify relevant data to be shared with the CVs in the vicinity. They could also be used to recommend personalized trainings to the driver based on his/her driving performance.

Abstract

Access to and processing of personal data is regulated by norms that are written down in legal source documents, including laws, regulations and contracts. Compliance can be automated through the formalisation of these norms, reducing human effort and making the applied interpretations explicit. In addition, trust between parties may increase, thus promoting collaborations to gain more insights from sharing data. Although several policy specification languages have been proposed, there are not many that can be used to specify both social policies, such as privacy regulations and contracts, and system-level policies such as those used for access control. In this work, we present extensions to eFLINT, a domain-specific language developed to formalise norms from various sources. The extensions make it possible to interconnect social and system-level policies. We demonstrate the new features of eFLINT within the healthcare domain by formalising the regulatory document of the SIOPE DIPG/DMG Network, a consortium established to advance research into a rare form of pediatric brain cancer, and by showing how the resulting specifications are used to automate compliance checking of access and processing requests made by members of the consortium.

Abstract

State of the art mass transit systems, such as bus rapid transit (BRT), have appeared to be an innovative solution to meet the mobility needs of many world cities. However, their ability to transform surrounding urban fabric remains less explored in the developing world. This paper examines the impacts of BRT Lahore on land development patterns, considering the phenomena of land use revitalization, densification, and property reconfiguration. We have used quantitative approaches to gauge the changes in the urban fabric, with respect to the local neighborhood conditions and parcel level attributes, using multilevel logit models. The results of the logit models reveal heterogeneous impacts on conversions to commercial plazas, apartment buildings, and mixed-use buildings. The distance to the BRT station and size of the property is significantly associated with these conversions. Overall, one can notice a lack of a sense of place making and an absence of transit-oriented zoning around BRT stations. The desire of sustainable transit-oriented development to intensify land uses according to local conditions requires local urban designers and planners to think ahead of the curve by working on the regulatory and zoning restrictions governing the designs of built environment and also address the issues of gentrification and social inequity. ispartof: Sustainability vol:13 issue:13 nrpages: 33 status: Published online
