132. Set-theoretic models of three-way decision

Abstract

The theory of three-way decision is about a philosophy of thinking in threes, a methodology of working with threes, and a mechanism of processing in threes. We approach a whole through three parts, in terms of three units, or from three perspectives. A trisecting–acting–outcome (TAO) model of three-way decision involves trisecting a whole into three parts and acting on the three parts, in order to produce an optimal outcome. In this paper, we further explore the TAO model in a set-theoretic setting and make three new contributions. The first contribution is an examination of three-way decision with nonstandard sets for representing concepts under the two kinds of objective/ontic and subjective/epistemic uncertainty. The second contribution is an introduction of an evaluation-based framework of three-way decision. We present a classification of trisections and investigate the notion of an evaluation space. The third contribution is, within the proposed framework, a systematical study of three-way decision with rough sets, interval sets, fuzzy sets, shadowed sets, rough fuzzy sets, interval fuzzy sets (or equivalently, vague sets, interval-valued fuzzy sets, intuitionistic fuzzy sets), and soft sets.

133. Algebraic approaches to granular computing

Abstract

We study the granular structures in granular computing from algebraic views. We model a granular structure based on an algebra that consists of a universe and a closure operator. Based on this formulation, we define the basic granules in a granular structure through the notion of subalgebras. Using formal concept analysis and rough set analysis as two examples, we demonstrate that the proposed formulation can unify a number of current studies on the related areas of granular computing. Moreover, by modelling the granular structures in rough sets with algebraic approaches, we generalize the notion of approximations in rough sets into a general granular structure. The algebraic approaches provide a mathematical formulation of granular structures, which may assist us in the construction and interpretation of granules and granular structures.

134. Feature Selection Using Zentropy-Based Uncertainty Measure

Abstract

Feature selection and entropy theory are two efficacious data analysis tools for investigating uncertainty information processing in artificial intelligence. The fruitful marriage of the two has been an active research topic in knowledge discovery. Currently, most feature selection methods via entropy theory mainly focus on the information measures at a single granular level. However, it ignores the interaction between granular levels, which leads to the poor stability and accuracy of related methods. Hence, this article proposes a novel zentropy-based uncertainty measure to design a feature selection method by exploiting the granular level structure in knowledge space. Subsequently, by analyzing the granular level structure in decision data, the zentropy-based uncertainty measure and its properties are designed and analyzed to depict the uncertainty knowledge from whole and internal. Moreover, two importance measures are defined to evaluate features based on the designed uncertainty measure, and then a corresponding feature selection algorithm is developed. Finally, some experiments are carried out on public datasets to demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art performance among methods, especially regarding stability and classification accuracy.

135. Geodesic Fuzzy Rough Sets for Discriminant Feature Extraction

Abstract

Feature extraction is a fundamental and challenging task in machine learning, which aims at extracting a subset of significant and discriminant features from raw data for various downstream tasks. The extraction process involves mapping the original data into a space with lower dimensions while preserving the desirable information. However, the data often has hidden manifold structures, which contain neighbor sample information within the same class. Most existing methods that extract data features without considering the potentially significant manifold structures would result in poorly discriminative features. To address these challenges, we propose a novel geodesic fuzzy rough set model (GFRS) to capture those complex manifold structures embed in the data. Given GFRS, we further design a discriminant feature extraction algorithm based on graph embedding to enhance the discriminative performance of the extracted features. Extensive experiments on fourteen real-world datasets and visualization results on modified national institute of standards and technology (MNIST) digits demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and its superiority over baselines methods.
