114. The spillway design for the dam’s height over 300 meters

Abstract

According the current hydropower development plan in China, numbers of hydraulic power plants with height over 300 meters will be built in the western region of China. These hydraulic power plants would be in crucial situation with the problems of high water head, huge discharge and narrow riverbed. Spillway is the most common structure in power plant which is used to drainage and flood release. According to the previous research, the velocity would be reaching to 55 m/s and the discharge can reach to 300 m3/s.m during spillway operation in the dam height over 300 m. The high velocity and discharge in the spillway may have the problems such as atomization nearby, slides on the side slope and river bank, Vibration on the pier, hydraulic jump, cavitation and the negative pressure on the spill way surface. All these problems may cause great disasters for both project and society. This paper proposes a novel method for flood release on high water head spillway which is named Rumei hydropower spillway located in the western region of China. This paper has following components: Determining the type and the layout of the spillway through the perspectives of air entrainment, flow jet angle and water energy dissipation in flushing pond structure. The physical hydraulic model has been used to evaluate spillway design effects.

115. Effect of riparian vegetation roots on development of meander bends in Tarim River, Northwest China

Abstract

Meandering channel with distorted bends develops along the Tarim River, the longest dryland river in China. The river bank and bed is majorly composed of coarse silt and fine sand and almost none clay content, making the bank strength very low. The development of meander bend in such environment hence is somehow irrational. We preliminarily investigate the effects of riparian vegetation root on bend development in this region through examining the root cohesion and its enhancement on bank stability. In-situ measurements and sampling of roots from local typical riparian vegetation (i.e., populous, Tamarix, and Phragmites Australis) were conducted to obtain root parameters like diameter and root area ratio. Local bend curvature corresponding to sampling sites are also obtained. BSTEM model is used to quantitatively estimate the effects of different root conditions on improving channel bank strength. Four vegetation root scenarios were modelled, i.e., tree (populous), shrub (Tamarix), grass (Phragmites Australis) and no root. The results show that root supplies effective cohesive reinforcement for the channel bank and enhances the bank safety factors (Fs). Riparian vegetation should be a necessary condition for development of meandering channel in Tarim River.

Abstract

A fast and efficient recognition method of transgenic lines will greatly improve detection efficiency and reduce cost. In this study, we successfully identified the transgenic soybean plants by the color. We isolated a GmW1gene encoding a flavonoid 3′5′-hydroxylase from a soybean cultivar ZH42 (purple flower). We found that purple flowers occurred in the overexpression lines in the Jack and Williams 82 backgrounds (white flower). All plants with purple flowers were positive, and this trait seems stably inherited in the offspring. We have also obtained the editing plants, which were classified into three types according to the different flower colors appeared. We analyzed the phenotype and the homozygous types of the T1mutants. We also found that a correspondence between flower color and stem color. This study provides a visible color reporter on soybean transformation. It can be quickly and early to identify the transgenic soybean plants by stem color of seedlings, which substantially reduces the amount of labor and cost.

Abstract

The advantage of wind energy is significant to the improvement of energy structure. This paper is mainly to demonstrate a bionic design for wind turbine blades inspired by the airfoil of owl wing and the herringbone groove structure of owl feathers. The blade of A 200 W horizontal axis wind turbine is taken as prototype blade. The design of bionic airfoil blade is based on 50% and 70% cross section airfoils of owl wing, which is combined with the parameters of the prototype blade. The design of bionic coupling blade is based on bionic airfoil blade, which is coupled with the herringbone groove structure. Numerical simulation is utilized to study the aerodynamic performance of all blades. These simulations utilize an incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes solver and shear stress transport k–ω turbulent model at different tip speed ratios (TSRs). Results show that the power coefficient (Cp) of bionic airfoil blades is higher than that of prototype blade in the TSR of 6–9; the Cp of bionic coupling blades is higher than that of bionic airfoil blades in the TSR of 6–10. The larger curvature of leading edge of blades leads to larger flow velocity, which leads to the smaller pressure on the leeward surface. The herringbone groove structure enhances the flow attachment by generating vortices, which reduces the pressure on the leeward surface of bionic coupling blades. Compared with the prototype blade and bionic airfoil blade, the pressure difference between the windward surface and the leeward surface of the bionic coupling blade is larger.
