112. A brain-to-gut signal controls intestinal fat absorption

Abstract

Although fat is a crucial source of energy in diets, excessive intake leads to obesity. Fat absorption in the gut is prevailingly thought to occur organ-autonomously by diffusion1–3. Whether the process is controlled by the brain-to-gut axis, however, remains largely unknown. Here we demonstrate that the dorsal motor nucleus of vagus (DMV) plays a key part in this process. Inactivation of DMV neurons reduces intestinal fat absorption and consequently causes weight loss, whereas activation of the DMV increases fat absorption and weight gain. Notably, the inactivation of a subpopulation of DMV neurons that project to the jejunum shortens the length of microvilli, thereby reducing fat absorption. Moreover, we identify a natural compound, puerarin, that mimics the suppression of the DMV–vagus pathway, which in turn leads to reduced fat absorption. Photoaffinity chemical methods and cryogenic electron microscopy of the structure of a GABAAreceptor–puerarin complex reveal that puerarin binds to an allosteric modulatory site. Notably, conditional Gabra1knockout in the DMV largely abolishes puerarin-induced intestinal fat loss. In summary, we discover that suppression of the DMV–vagus–jejunum axis controls intestinal fat absorption by shortening the length of microvilli and illustrate the therapeutic potential of puerarin binding to GABRA1 in fat loss.

Abstract

Herein, a chiral charge transfer crystal that exhibits reversible phase transition between chiral space groups has been fabricated. When the phase switches from left-handed to right-handed chiral space group, more pronounced orbital angular momentum effects will be generated, where magneto-responsive optics are the opposite for chiral enantiomers. Moreover, circularly polarized light could enhance the chiral orbit of the crystal with the same spiral orientation to let spin have a better ability to resist external magnetic field. Thus, the magnetic field dependence of transmission and photoluminescence of chiral crystals are strongly dependent on the polarized state of incident light. Furthermore, by studying the coupling among spin, orbit, and circular photon, we obtained that the chiral orbit plays a key role in the coupling between the spin and circular photon. Abstract

Considerable research has been conducted on single-ion conductive polymeric electrolytes with high lithium ion transference numbers. However, low ionic conductivity is a long-standing challenge for lithium metal batteries, hindering the development of extending their cycle life. In this study, we synthesized a novel fluorine-containing single-ion polymeric electrolyte, LiP(VDF-co-MAF)BB (Polyvinylidene fluoride trifluoromethyl acrylate lithium borate polymer; subsequently referred to as PPMBB), exhibiting a room temperature conductivity of 1.03 × 10−3 S/cm. This electrolyte demonstrates a high lithium ion transference number of 0.7901 and an extended electrochemical stability window of 5.5 V. Under a 2 C discharge rate, it manifests a remarkable discharge specific capacity of 146.8 mAh/g. Moreover, even after 364 cycles, the capacity retention remains at 76%. The single-ion polymeric gel electrolyte designed in this work provides a promising strategy for the prolonged cycling performance of lithium metal batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

At present, under the background of the excess product oil market, "reducing oil products and increasing chemical raw materials" has become the mainstream trend in the chemical industry. In recent years, ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst has been widely used in the aromatization of FCC gasoline, but its modification to improve its aromatization catalytic performance is still not perfect. Therefore, based on the existing process technology, the effect of pseudo-boehmite on the aromatization performance of Zn-P-Al/ZSM-5 catalysts was investigated on a small continuous fixed-bed reactor using 75-120 °C fractions of FCC gasoline as feedstock. The results show that the aromatization performance of Zn-P-Al/ZSM-5 catalyst is better than that of Zn-P/ZSM-5 and HZSM-5, and the best aromatization performance is obtained when the pseudo-boehmite ratio is 30%, the aromatics content and aromatics yield in liquid products are 90.82% and 54.38%, respectively.
