Millimeter-sized single crystals of LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO1-xFx, and LaFe1-xCoxAsO were grown in NaAs flux at ambient pressure. The detailed growth procedure and crystal characterizations are reported. The as-grown crystals have typical dimensions of 3 * 4 * 0.05-0.3 mm3 with the crystallographic c-axis perpendicular to the plane of the plate-like single crystals. Some crystals manifest linear dimensions as large as 4-5 mm. X-ray and neutron single crystal scattering confirmed that LaFeAsO crystals exhibit a structural phase transition at Ts ~ 154 K and a magnetic phase transition at TSDW ~ 140 K. The transition temperatures agree with those determined by anisotropic magnetization, in-plane electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements and are consistent with previous reports on polycrystalline samples. Co and F were successfully introduced into the lattice leading to superconducting LaFe1-xCoxAsO and LaFeAsO1-xFx single crystals, respectively. This growth protocol has been successfully employed to grow single crystals of NdFeAsO. Thus it is expected to be broadly applicable to grow other RMAsO (R = rare earth, M = transition metal) compounds. These large crystals will facilitate the efforts of unraveling the underlying physics of iron pniticide superconductors.

We present thermodynamic, structural and transport measurements on Ba(Fe0.973Cr0.027)2As2 single crystals. All measurements reveal sharp anomalies at ~ 112 K. Single crystal x-ray diffraction identifies the structural transition as a first order, from the high-temperature tetragonal I4/mmm to the low-temperature orthorhombic Fmmm structure, in contrast to an earlier report.

Single crystalline Ba(Fe(1-x)TMx)2As2 (TM = Rh, Pd) series have been grown and characterized by structural, thermodynamic and transport measurements. These measurements show that the structural/magnetic phase transitions, found in pure BaFe2As2 at 134 K, are suppressed monotonically by the doping and that superconductivity can be stablized over a dome-like region. Temperature-composition (T-x) phase diagrams based on electrical transport and magnetization measurements are constructed and compared to those of the Ba(Fe(1-x)TMx)2As2 (TM = Co, Ni) series. Despite the generic difference between 3d and 4d shells and the specific, conspicuous differences in the changes to the unit cell parameters, the effects of Rh doping are exceptionally similar to the effects of Co doping and the effects of Pd doping are exceptionally similar to the effects of Ni doping. These data show that whereas the structural / antiferromagnetic phase transition temperatures can be parameterized by x and the superconducting transition temperature can be parameterized by some combination of x and e, the number of extra electrons associated with the TM doping, the transition temperatures of 3d- and 4d- doped BaFe2As2 can not be simply parameterized by the changes in the unit cell dimensions or their ratios.

Study and comparison of over 30 examples of electron doped BaFe2As2 for transition metal (TM) = Co, Ni, Cu, and (Co/Cu mixtures) have lead to an understanding that the suppression of the structural/antiferromagnetic phase transition to low enough temperature in these compounds is a necessary condition for superconductivity, but not a sufficient one. Whereas the structural/antiferromagnetic transitions are suppressed by the number of TM dopant ions (or changes in the c-axis) the superconducting dome exists over a limited range of values of the number of electrons added by doping (or values of the {a/c} ratio). By choosing which combination of dopants are used we can change the relative positions of the upper phase lines and the superconducting dome, even to the extreme limit of suppressing the upper structural and magnetic phase transitions without the stabilization of low temperature superconducting dome.

The Nernst effect in metals is highly sensitive to two kinds of phase transition: superconductivity and density-wave order. The large positive Nernst signal observed in hole-doped high-Tc superconductors above their transition temperature Tc has so far been attributed to fluctuating superconductivity. Here we show that in some of these materials the large Nernst signal is in fact caused by stripe order, a form of spin / charge modulation which causes a reconstruction of the Fermi surface. In LSCO doped with Nd or Eu, the onset of stripe order causes the Nernst signal to go from small and negative to large and positive, as revealed either by lowering the hole concentration across the quantum critical point in Nd-LSCO, or lowering the temperature across the ordering temperature in Eu-LSCO. In the latter case, two separate peaks are resolved, respectively associated with the onset of stripe order at high temperature and superconductivity near Tc. This sensitivity to Fermi-surface reconstruction makes the Nernst effect a promising probe of broken symmetry in high-Tc superconductors.

The compound CaV2O4 contains V^{+3} cations with spin S = 1 and has an orthorhombic structure at room temperature containing zigzag chains of V atoms running along the c-axis. We have grown single crystals of CaV2O4 and report crystallography, static magnetization, magnetic susceptibility \chi, ac magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity Cp, and thermal expansion measurements in the temperature T range of 1.8-350 K on the single crystals and on polycrystalline samples. An orthorhombic to monoclinic structural distortion and a long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) transition were found at sample-dependent temperatures T_S \approx 108-145 K and T_N \approx 51-76 K, respectively. In two annealed single crystals, another transition was found at \approx 200 K. In one of the crystals, this transition is mostly due to V2O3 impurity phase that grows coherently in the crystals during annealing. However, in the other crystal the origin of this transition at 200 K is unknown. The \chi(T) shows a broad maximum at \approx 300 K associated with short-range AF ordering and the anisotropy of \chi above T_N is small. The anisotropic \chi(T \to 0) data below T_N show that the (average) easy axis of the AF magnetic structure is the b-axis. The Cp(T) data indicate strong short-range AF ordering above T_N, consistent with the \chi(T) data. We fitted our \chi(T) data near room temperature by a J1-J2 S = 1 Heisenberg chain model, where J1(J2) is the (next)-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction. We find J1 \approx 230 K, and surprisingly, J2/J1 \approx 0 (or J1/J2 \approx 0). The interaction J_\perp between these S = 1 chains leading to long-range AF ordering at T_N is estimated to be J_\perp/J_1 \gtrsim 0.04., Comment: 22 pages, 24 figures, 6 tables

Single crystalline samples of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with $x < 0.12$ have been grown and characterized via microscopic, thermodynamic and transport measurements. With increasing Co substitution, the thermodynamic and transport signatures of the structural (high temperature tetragonal to low temperature orthorhombic) and magnetic (high temperature non magnetic to low temperature antiferromagnetic) transitions are suppressed at a rate of roughly 15 K per percent Co. In addition, for $x \ge 0.038$ superconductivity is stabilized, rising to a maximum $T_c$ of approximately 23 K for $x \approx 0.07$ and decreasing for higher $x$ values. The $T - x$ phase diagram for Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ indicates that either superconductivity can exist in both low temperature crystallographic phases or that there is a structural phase separation. Anisotropic, superconducting, upper critical field data ($H_{c2}(T)$) show a significant and clear change in anisotropy between samples that have higher temperature structural phase transitions and those that do not. These data show that the superconductivity is sensitive to the suppression of the higher temperature phase transition.

The thermopower S of the high-Tc superconductor La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4) was measured as a function of temperature T near its pseudogap critical point, the critical hole doping p* where the pseudogap temperature T* goes to zero. Just above p*, S/T varies as ln(1/T) over a decade of temperature. Below p*, S/T undergoes a large increase below T*. As with the temperature dependence of the resistivity, which is linear just above p* and undergoes a large upturn below T*, these are typical signatures of a quantum phase transition. This suggests that p* is a quantum critical point below which some order sets in, causing a reconstruction of the Fermi surface, whose fluctuations are presumably responsible for the linear-T resistivity and logarithmic thermopower. The London penetration depth, $\lambda(T)$, has been measured in several single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{0.93}$Co$_{0.07}$)$_2$As$_2$. Thermodynamic, electromagnetic, and structural characterization measurements confirm that these crystals are of excellent quality. The observed low temperature variation of $\lambda(T)$ follows a power-law, $\Delta \lambda (T) \sim T^n$ with $n=2.4 \pm 0.1$, indicating the existence of normal quasiparticles down to at least $0.02T_c$. This is in contrast to recent penetration depth measurements on single crystals of NdFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, which indicate an anisotropic but nodeless gap. We propose that a more three-dimensional character in the electronic structure of Ba(Fe$_{0.93}$Co$_{0.07}$)$_2$As$_2$ may lead to an anisotropic $s-$wave gap with point nodes that would explain the observed $\lambda(T)$., Comment: 4 pages

Detailed measurements of the global and local electromagnetic properties of Ba(Fe$_{0.93}$Co$_{0.07}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals are reported. Analysis of the irreversible magnetic response provides strong evidence for similar vortex physics in this Fe-based pnictide superconductor to the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates, such as Y-Ba-Cu-O or Nd-Ce-Cu-O. In particular, we have found a nonmonotonic "fishtail" magnetization in $M(H,T=const)$ loops and its signature is also present in $M(H=const,T)$ scans. The supercurrent density is evaluated by using several techniques, including direct transport measurements. At 5 K we estimate its value to be a moderate $j \approx 2.6 \pm 0.2 \times 10^5$ A/cm$^2$. Analysis of the magnetic relaxation is consistent with the collective pinning and creep models (weak pinning and fast creep) and suggests a crossover from the collective to the plastic creep regime in fields exceeding the value corresponding to the maximum in fishtail magnetization.

A procedure is outlined for the determination of magnetic exchange constants in anisotropic perovskite anitferromagnets using powder inelastic neutron scattering. Spin wave densities-of-states are measured using time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering for LaMnO$_{3}$ ($A$-type antiferromagnet), LaVO$_{3}$ ($C$-type), and LaFeO$_{3}$ ($G$-type) and compared to Heisenberg model calculations. The anisotropy of in-plane ($J_{ab}$) and out-of-plane ($J_{c}$) exchange constants can be obtained from the data. The procedure quickly determines the magnetic exchange interactions without the need for single-crystal dispersion measurements and allows for rapid systematic studies of the evolution of magnetism in perovskite systems., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

A fundamental question of high-temperature superconductors is the nature of the pseudogap phase which lies between the Mott insulator at zero doping and the Fermi liquid at high doping p. Here we report on the behaviour of charge carriers near the zero-temperature onset of that phase, namely at the critical doping p* where the pseudogap temperature T* goes to zero, accessed by investigating a material in which superconductivity can be fully suppressed by a steady magnetic field. Just below p*, the normal-state resistivity and Hall coefficient of La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 are found to rise simultaneously as the temperature drops below T*, revealing a change in the Fermi surface with a large associated drop in conductivity. At p*, the resistivity shows a linear temperature dependence as T goes to zero, a typical signature of a quantum critical point. These findings impose new constraints on the mechanisms responsible for inelastic scattering and Fermi surface transformation in theories of the pseudogap phase., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures. Plate-like single crystals of SrFe2As2 as large as 3x3x0.5 mm3 have been grown out of Sn flux. The SrFe2As2 single crystals show a structural phase transition from a high temperature tetragonal phase to a low temperature orthorhombic phase at To = 198 K, and do not show any sign of superconductivity down to 1.8 K. The structural transition is accompanied by an anomaly in the electrical resistivity, Hall resistivity, specific heat, and the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. In an intermediate temperature range from 198 K to 160 K, single crystal X-ray diffraction suggests a coexistence of the high-temperature tetragonal and the low-temperature orthorhombic phases.

Using x-ray resonant magnetic scattering and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, techniques that are element specific, we have elucidated the role of Ho3+ in multiferroic HoMnO3. In zero field, Ho3+ orders antiferromagnetically with moments aligned along the hexagonal c direction below 40 K, and undergoes a transition to another magnetic structure below 4.5 K. Magnetically pure spinel compound ${\rm LiV_2O_4}$ is a rare $d$-electron heavy fermion. Measurements on single crystals are needed to clarify the mechanism for the heavy fermion behavior in the pure material. In addition, it is known that small concentrations ($< 1$ mol%) of magnetic defects in the structure strongly affect the properties, and measurements on single crystals containing magnetic defects would help to understand the latter behaviors. Herein, we report flux growth of ${\rm LiV_2O_4}$ and preliminary measurements to help resolve these questions. The magnetic susceptibility of some as-grown crystals show a Curie-like upturn at low temperatures, showing the presence of magnetic defects within the spinel structure. The magnetic defects could be removed in some of the crystals by annealing them at 700 $^\circ$C\@. A very high specific heat coefficient $\gamma$ = 450 mJ/(mol K${^2}$\@) was obtained at a temperature of 1.8 K for a crystal containing a magnetic defect concentration $n$${\rm_{defect}}$ = 0.5 mol%. $^{51}$V NMR studies on CaV2O4 single crystals and $^{17}$O NMR studies on $^{17}$O-enriched powder samples are reported. The temperature dependences of the $^{17}$O NMR line width and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate give strong evidence for a long-range antiferromagnetic transition at Tn = 78 K in the powder. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that Tn = 69 K in the crystals. A zero-field $^{51}$V NMR signal was observed at low temperatures (f $\approx$ 237 MHz at 4.2 K) in the crystals. The field swept spectra with the field in different directions suggest the presence of two antiferromagnetic substructures. Each substructure is collinear, with the easy axes of the two substructures separated by an angle of 19(1) degree, and with their average direction pointing approximately along the b-axis of the crystal structure. The two spin substructures contain equal number of spins. The temperature dependence of the ordered moment, measured up to 45 K, shows the presence of an energy gap Eg in the antiferromagnetic spin wave excitation spectrum. X-ray diffraction experiments were performed on polycrystalline and single-crystal specimens of Ce$_{2}$Fe$_{17}$ at temperatures between 10 K and 300 K. Below $T_{\mathrm{t}}$ = 118$\pm$2 K, additional weak superstructure reflections were observed in the antiferromagnetically ordered state. The superstructure can be described by a doubling of the chemical unit cell along the $\mathbf{c}$ direction in hexagonal notation with the same space group $R \bar{3} m$ as the room-temperature structure. The additional antiferromagnetic satellite reflections observed in earlier neutron diffraction experiments can be conclusively related to the appearance of this superstructure., Comment: 8 pages, figures, submitted for publication in Phys. The magnetic exchange energies in charge ordered La_(1/3)Sr_(2/3)FeO_(3-d) (LSFO) and its parent compound LaFeO_(3) (LFO) have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering. In LSFO, the measured ratio of ferromagnetic exchange between Fe3+ - Fe5+ pairs (J_F) and antiferromagnetic exchange between Fe3+ - Fe3+ pairs (J_AF) fulfills the criterion for charge ordering driven by magnetic interactions (|J_F/J_AF| > 1). The 30% reduction of J_AF as compared to LFO indicates that doped holes are delocalized, and charge ordering occurs without a dominant influence from Coulomb interactions., Comment: 18 pages, 4 color figures
