Abstract

Verification of carbon density profile measurements with charge exchange spectroscopy of CVI (Δn = 8 - 7, λ = 529.2 nm) using hydrogen and deuterium neutral beams is described. This is a key issue in the study of the comparison of the carbon density profile between hydrogen and deuterium plasma, because the hydrogen neutral beams are injected in the hydrogen plasma and the deuterium neutral beams are injected in the deuterium plasma. By applying the precise beam attenuation calculation using precise atomic data, identical carbon density profile is obtained for the plasma with hydrogen beam and deuterium beam. A Verification of the measurement is performed by comparison of carbon density profile measured with charge exchange spectroscopy and increment of electron density profile just after the carbon pellet injection.

Abstract

The fast ion confinement time in the Large Helical Device (LHD) is investigated by using the neutron measurement and simulations. To estimate the fast ion confinement time, a series of short pulse neutral beam (NB) injection experiments have been performed. Additionally, the NB heating simulation code, CONV_FIT3D, has been extended to estimate the neutron emission rate in LHD. We estimate the fast ion confinement time from the differences between the measured and the simulated neutron decay times after the NB is turned off. It is found that the fast ion confinement time of three tangential NBs have similar values τc ∼ 0.5 sec and the confinement time of the perpendicular NB is approximately τc ∼ 0.06 sec. Additionally, by using the confinement time and the ion ratio data estimated from the simulation result, we can obtain a simulation result similar to the measured data.

Abstract

Since a room temperature ferromagnetism of fullerene was reported (It has been retracted now.), many studies have been carried out theoretically and experimentally on the magnetism of nano-carbon materials [1]–[3]. Both theoretical and experimental studies have suggested that hydrogen adsorption on edges or surface of graphene sheets plays an important role in the ferromagnetism of graphene. In this work, a magnetism of multilayered graphene oxide sheets was investigated.

Abstract

Amorphous(a-) CoFeSiB alloy has exhibited excellent soft magnetic properties, and there have been many articles on the magnetic properties and the structures of a-CoFeSiB ribbons [1]. The a-CoFeSiB thin film is a promising material for a thin film yoke and a multilayered magnetic core. In our previous paper [2], we have reported a thermal stability of a-CoFeSiB thin films and an influence of Hf addition on the thermal stability. In this study, we report the magnetic properties and thermal stability of a-CoFeSiBHf thin films in detail.

Abstract

Twelve high schools in Japan (of which six are in Fukushima Prefecture), four in France, eight in Poland and two in Belarus cooperated in the measurement and comparison of individual external doses in 2014. In total 216 high-school students and teachers participated in the study. Each participant wore an electronic personal dosimeter 'D-shuttle' for two weeks, and kept a journal of his/her whereabouts and activities. The distributions of annual external doses estimated for each region overlap with each other, demonstrating that the personal external individual doses in locations where residence is currently allowed in Fukushima Prefecture and in Belarus are well within the range of estimated annual doses due to the terrestrial background radiation level of other regions/countries. © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract

We have searched for the simplest kaonic nuclear state, KNN, using the in-flight 3He (K-, n) reaction at the J-PARC hadron experimental facility. In the semi-inclusive neutron missing-mass spectrum at θnlab=0°, an excess of yield was observed just below the K- pp mass-threshold, which cannot be explained by any elementary reactions [PTEP 2015, 061D01]. To understand the missing-mass spectrum of 3He (K-, n) X, we investigated the elementary (K-, n) reactions using hydrogen and deuterium targets. The p (K-, n) X missing-mass spectrum was well described by the charge-exchange reaction. However, in the d (K-, n) X spectrum, we observed an excess of yield just below the K- p mass-threshold, which was similar to that in the 3He (K-, n) X spectrum. (Less)

Abstract

Objectives: Studies of palliative care are often performed using single-arm pre–post study designs that lack causal inference. Thus, in this study, we propose a novel data analysis approach that incorporates risk factors from single-arm studies instead of using paired t-tests to assess intervention effects. Methods: Physical, psychological and social evaluations of eligible cancer inpatients were conducted by a hospital-based palliative care team. Quality of life was assessed at baseline and after 7 days of symptomatic treatment using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C15-PAL. Among 35 patients, 9 were discharged within 1 week and 26 were included in analyses. Structural equation models with observed measurements were applied to estimate direct and indirect intervention effects and simultaneously consider risk factors. Results: Parameters were estimated using full models that included associations among covariates and reduced models that excluded covariates with small effects. The total effect was calculated as the sum of intervention and covariate effects and was equal to the mean of the difference (0.513) between pre- and post-intervention quality of life (reduced model intervention effect, 14.749; 95% confidence intervals, −4.407 and 33.905; p = 0.131; covariate effect, −14.236; 95% confidence interval, −33.708 and 5.236; p = 0.152). Conclusion: Using the present analytical method for single-arm pre–post study designs, factors that modulate effects of interventions were modelled, and intervention and covariate effects were distinguished based on structural equation model.

Abstract

Attempting to lose weight by normal or underweight adolescent girls is a serious issue in many countries. It has been reported that the mode of attempted weight loss does not differ between normal weight and overweight girls. These inappropriate weight loss attempts (IWLA) by normal or underweight adolescent girls is associated with various health issues, but factors associated with IWLA have only been marginally elucidated. In this study, we applied a single multivariate regression analysis to clarify independent factors for IWLA. Study subjects were 134 pairs of early adolescent girls (aged 12-15) and their mothers. In addition to IWLA, many factors including height, weight, body image, perceived weight status, depressive symptoms, media influence and self-esteem were surveyed in both mothers and daughters and subjected to multivariate analysis. Approximately half of girls surveyed had IWLA, even though all were of normal weight and 62.9% knew that they were of normal weight. IWLA were independently associated with depressive symptoms (OR (95% CI); 2.80 (1.21-6.50), p=0.016) independent of actual or perceived weight status. Factors significantly associated with IWLA by the girls were percentage deviation of weight from standard weight (%DW) and media influence on the girls themselves, and media influence on and self-esteem of their mothers. IWLA, which were frequently observed among early adolescent girls even among those of normal weight, were closely related to depressive status. IWLA were significantly associated with not only factors related to the girls (1.09 (1.04-1.14), p=0.001), but also with maternal psychological factors (1.06 (1.00-1.13), p=0.035) conveyed by the media. Future prospective or interventional studies are required to clarify whether these factors could be targeted in an effort to prevent IWLA.

Abstract

Objectives: Oral health care providers may discover systemic diseases incidentally from signs observed in the oral cavity. Here, we report a case in which oral health care providers in a hospital discovered a patient with strongly suspected bullous pemphigoid (BP), which is a relatively rare but important disease, in a ward. Methods: The patient was a 78-year-old Japanese woman admitted to our hospital because of severe Alzheimer's disease. We discovered recurrent ulcers in the oral mucosa and skin when performing oral care in her ward. Biopsy could not be performed safely because of involuntary biting. We performed blood tests for anti-BP180-NC16a antibody, which is autoantibody specific for BP. Results: The patient had a very high anti-BP180-NC16a antibody titre. We consulted a dermatologist regarding her clinical course and the clinical features of the oral mucosa and skin along with blood test results. BP was very strongly suspected. Discussion: In cases in which oral health care providers suspect their patients may have BP, appropriate examination and provision of information to the doctor are important. Oral health care providers should have knowledge about systemic diseases, the signs of which appear in oral cavity to avoid missing important systemic diseases.

Abstract

The neutron-deuteron (nd) scattering is studied in the Faddeev formalism, employing the NN sector of the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction fss2. The energy-dependence of the NN interaction, inherent to the resonating-group formulation of two three-quark clusters, is eliminated by the standard off-shell transformation utilizing the square root of the normalization kernel. This procedure yields an extra nonlocality to the quark-model exchange kernel, which is very important to reproduce all the observables for the bound state and the elastic scattering below En ≤ 65 MeV . The deuteron breakup differential cross sections are also examined.

Abstract

We derive single-hyperon potentials for light nuclei, based on the G-matrix calculations of the quark-model baryon-baryon interactions developed by the Kyoto-Niigata group. The Ξ12 C (0+) and Ξ16 O potentials have non-trivial oscillating behavior, reflecting strong isospin dependence of the ΞN interaction; namely, attractive isospin I = 0 ΞN interaction and weakly repulsive I = 1 interaction. The latter repulsive effect is largely enhanced in the intermediate region of the Ξ-core potential, resulting in very weak attraction at the surface region.

Abstract

Although the introduction of filament twisting with high resistive barrier between the filaments is effective to reduce the AC loss, the J c value of the tape was easily decreased by the filament twisting and insertion of high resistive barrier. This decrease in J c is a problem to achieve low AC loss and high I c tape. In this study, the effects of filament twist and high resistive barrier on the microstructure and J c property were investigated to overcome the J c reduction. The Bi2223 tapes with filament twist or oxide barrier were fabricated by powder-in-tube method. The J c value of twist tape gradually decreased as decreasing the twist pitch, and the degree of J c reduction was small in slim tape compared to wide tape. This reduction would attribute to the small actual cross sectional area of the filament perpendicular to the current direction because the filament has a tilt angle from the tape axis. On the other hand, the conversion ratio of Bi2223 became small as increasing the thickness of SZO barrier layer. Since the SZO barrier has less reactivity with 2223 filament, this suppression of the Bi2223 formation would not be caused by the formation of impurity phase but would be caused by the suppression of gas release from the filaments by oxide barrier. The conversion ratio of Bi2223 increased in the short sample where the gas could be released from the both end of the tape. These results suggest that the gas diffusion from filaments would be important for the formation of Bi2223. Hence, the use of slim tape for decreasing the tilt angle of the filament and keeping the diffusion path of gas from the filaments may improve the J c value of twist and barrier tapes. .

Abstract

Plasma grid bias has been utilized for reducing an electron density in the vicinity of a plasma grid in negative ion sources for fusion, resulting in achievement of low co-extracted electron current. In this study, the effectiveness and feasibility of the plasma grid bias on beam optics optimization are demonstrated. It is shown that the beam optics strongly depends on the bias voltage and is successfully optimized at different bias voltages depending on the discharge power. Responses of the beam properties such as the perveance and the current ratio to the plasma grid bias are also shown for both hydrogen and deuterium beams.

Abstract

The behavior of carbon impurities in deuterium plasmas and its impact on thermal confinement were investigated in comparison with hydrogen plasmas in the Large Helical Device (LHD). Deuterium plasma experiments have been started in the LHD and high-ion-temperature plasmas with central ion temperature (T i) of 10 keV were successfully obtained. The thermal confinement improvement could be sustained for a longer time compared with hydrogen plasmas. An isotope effect was observed in the time evolution of the carbon density profiles. A transiently peaked profile was observed in the deuterium plasmas due to the smaller carbon convection velocity and diffusivity in the deuterium plasmas compared with the hydrogen plasmas. The peaked carbon density profile was strongly correlated to the ion thermal confinement improvement. The peaking of the carbon density profile will be one of the clues to clarify the unexplained mechanisms for the formations of ion internal transport barrier and impurity hole on LHD. These results could also lead to a better understanding of the isotope effect in the thermal confinement in torus plasma.

Abstract

Recently, the shift of the kaonic helium-4 2p state was precisely determined by the E570 and SIDDHARTA experiments. Prior to the experiment by E570, the average of three earlier experimental results showed - 43±8 eV, while most of the theoretical calculations give ∼ 0 eV. This five-sigma discrepancy between theory and experiment was known as the "kaonic helium puzzle". A recent theoretical model showed a possible resonance-like shift of maximum 10 eV for a certain value of a deep antikaon-nucleon interaction potential, which is different in helium 3 and helium 4. The E570 experiment determined the shift of the kaonic helium-4 2p state as +2±2 (stat)±2 (sys) eV in 2007. The SIDDHARTA experiment determined the shift as 0±6 (stat)±2 (sys) eV in 2009. The results of these experiments resolved the long-standing puzzle. A new experiment of the kaonic helium-3 X-ray measurement is being prepared by the J-PARC E17 collaborators, and the kaonic helium-3 X-ray data taken very recently by the SIDDHARTA experiment are on the way to be analyzed. The results of the E570, E17 and SIDDHARTA experiments examine the strong interaction for light nuclei with different isospin, and test furthermore recent theoretical predictions. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract

We reexamine the spin-orbit splitting of [Formula: see text] excited states in terms of the SU6 quark-model baryon-baryon interaction. The previous folding procedure to generate the Λα spin-orbit potential from the quark-model ΛN LS resonating-group kernel predicted three to five times larger values for ΔEℓs = Ex(3/2+) - Ex(5/2+) in the model FSS and fss2. This time, we calculate Λα LS Born kernel, starting from the LS components of the nuclear-matter G-matrix for the Λ hyperon. This framework makes it possible to take full account of an important P-wave ΛN-ΣN coupling through the antisymmetric LS(-) force involved in the Fermi-Breit interaction. We find that the experimental value, [Formula: see text], is reproduced by the quark-model G-matrix LS interaction with a Fermi-momentum around kF = 1.0 fm -1, when the model FSS is used in the energy-independent renormalized RGM formalism. On the other hand, the model fss2 gives too large splitting of almost 200 keV, owing to the uncanceled contribution of the scalar-meson exchange LS components.

Abstract

Strong interactions acting between baryons, the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction among others, play a basic role in building nuclei. Because of its importance enormous efforts, both experimental and theoretical, have hitherto been paid to understand the nature of the NN interaction. The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) [1] is nowadays believed to be a fundamental theory of the strong interaction. From this modern view, Yukawa's meson theory [2] for the nuclear force is regarded as an effective description of the interaction of the composite nucleons, governed by the strongly nonperturbative dynamics of quarks and gluons. A recent lattice QCD calculation [3] confirms this view by producing both the short-range repulsion and medium-range attraction for the three-quark plus three-quark (3q-3q) configuration. Further studies in this direction have to be made for a quantitative description of the nuclear force.

Abstract

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a component of mildly-oxidized LDL and the lipid rich core of atherosclerotic plaques, elicits platelet activation. LPA is the ligand of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) of the EDG family (LPA(1-3)) and the newly identified LPA(4-7) subcluster. LPA(4), LPA(5) and LPA(7) increase cellular cAMP levels that would induce platelet inhibition rather than activation. In the present study we quantified the mRNA levels of the LPA(1-7) GPCR in human platelets and found a rank order LPA(4) = LPA(5) > LPA(7) > LPA(6) = LPA(2) >> LPA(1) > LPA(3). We examined platelet shape change using a panel of LPA receptor subtype-selective agonists and antagonists and compared them with their pharmacological profiles obtained in heterologous LPA(1-5) receptor expression systems. Responses to different natural acyl and alkyl species of LPA, and octyl phosphatidic acid analogs, alpha-substituted phosphonate analogs, N-palmitoyl-tyrosine phosphoric acid, N-palmitoyl-serine phosphoric acid were tested. All of these compounds elicited platelet activation and also inhibited LPA-induced platelet shape change after pre-incubation, suggesting that receptor desensitization is likely responsible for the inhibition of this response. Fatty acid free albumin (10 microM) lacking platelet activity completely inhibited platelet shape change induced by LPA with an IC(50) of 1.1 microM but had no effect on the activation of LPA(1,2,3,&5) expressed in endogenously non-LPA-responsive RH7777 cells. However, albumin reduced LPA(4) activation and shifted the dose-response curve to the right. LPA(5) transiently expressed in RH7777 cells showed preference to alkyl-LPA over acyl-LPA that is similar to that in platelets. LPA did not increase cAMP levels in platelets. In conclusion, our results with the pharmacological compounds and albumin demonstrate that LPA does not induce platelet shape change simply through activation of LPA(1-5), and the receptor(s) mediating LPA-induced platelet activation remains elusive.

Abstract

The Japan Arteriosclerosis Longitudinal Study-Existing Cohorts Combine (JALS-ECC) is a pooled study based on individual participant data from existing prospective cohort studies in Japan. Its purpose was to consider associations between risk factors and cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes, as well as differences between subgroups, defined by age, gender or geographical region, which could not be detected in the smaller samples.Individual records for 66,691 participants in 21 cohort studies were pooled, accounting for a total of 575,628 person-years. From this data, there were 409 deaths attributed to stroke and 169 deaths attributed to coronary heart disease (CHD). Total stroke and CHD events were 1,478 and 178, respectively. Of the 1,424 total stroke events with a reported stroke subtype, 975 were classified as ischemic, 267 as hemorrhagic, and 178 as subarachnoid hemorrhage.The JALS-ECC collected data from existing cohort studies covering a diverse Japanese population, which has provided information about the effects of modifiable factors on the risks of the CVD. Such information should provide a reliable basis for establishing prevention strategies.

Abstract

Background and purpose: α1-Adrenoceptor antagonists are extensively used in the treatment of hypertension and lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Among the side effects, ejaculatory dysfunction occurs more frequently with drugs that are relatively selective for α1A-adrenoceptors compared with other drugs of this class. This suggests that α1A-adrenoceptors may contribute to ejaculation. However, this has not been studied at the molecular level. Experimental approach: The physiological contribution of each α1-adrenoceptor subtype was characterized using α1-adrenoceptor subtype-selective knockout (KO) mice (α1A-, α1B- and α1D-AR KO mice) since the subtype-specific drugs available are only moderately selective. We analysed the role of α1-adrenoceptors in the blood pressure and vascular response as well as ejaculation by determining these variables in α1-adrenoceptor subtype-selective KO mice and in mice with all their α1-adrenoceptor subtypes deleted (α1-AR triple-KO mice). Key results: The pregnancy rate was reduced by 50% in α1A-adrenoceptor KO mice, and this reduction was dramatically enhanced in α1-adrenoceptor triple-KO mice. Contractile tension of the vas deferens in response to noradrenaline was markedly decreased in α1A-adrenoceptor KO mice, and this contraction was completely abolished in α1-adrenoceptor triple-KO mice. This attenuation of contractility was also observed in the electrically stimulated vas deferens. Conclusions and implications: These results demonstrate that α1-adrenoceptors, particularly α1A-adrenoceptors, are required for normal contractility of the vas deferens and consequent sperm ejaculation as well as having a function in fertility. The phase diagram of the nematic mesophase present in the tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide/sodium bromide/water ternary system was determined. A calamitic nematic mesophase (NC) was observed which extends to very high concentrations of electrolyte. The order parameters of the surfactant head group in the mesophases were studied by the NMR quadrupolar splitting of the deuterated surfactant. On increasing the temperature of nematic mesophases with low electrolyte concentrations, a phase separation occurs with the formation of a more highly ordered hexagonal phase and an isotropic phase. Diffusion measurements of the isotropic micellar solution by the NMR PFG method were used to estimate hydrodynamic radii at low surfactant concentrations and to study micelle diffusion as the concentration of the surfactant was increased to the liquid crystalline region. Abstract

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been synthesized by a laserirradiated chemical vapor deposition (LICVD), where a laser with 514.5 nm was used as a source of heat. The irradiation laser power dependence was investigated for growth of suspended SWNTs. On the basis of the results, the suspended SWNTs were formed between the patterned catalysts at irradiation power of 5 mW by LICVD method. The 514.5-nm Raman scattering spectroscopy measurement revealed that the radial breading mode was clearly observed. As a result of the resonant effect, SWNTs, which are resonant to irradiation laser with 514.5 nm, might be easily bridged between the patterned catalysts.

Abstract

This report addresses several questions regarding the deactivation of alumina in catalytic epoxidation using aqueous 70% H 2 O 2 . The structural, textural, morphological, and chemical changes of a polycrystalline alumina ( γ -Al 2 O 3 and boehmite) were studied in five consecutives reactions of 24 h. The chemical and physical processes involved in the transformations during alumina recycling are attributed mainly to the presence of water in the reaction mixture. Water plays a dual role in the catalytic system. On the one hand, water may cause deleterious changes of the structure of γ -Al 2 O 3 and its textural properties. On the other hand, the presence of water shifts the adsorption equilibria of the organic molecules (acetic acid, diols, and oligomers), preserving the type Ia Al OH sites, which are active for catalytic epoxidation. In this way, the water in the alumina/H 2 O 2 catalytic system seems to be significant in prolonging the lifetime of the catalyst.

In order to detect plant aroma in a natural environment, we have investigated roses' aroma using an odor sensor of quartz crystal resonator (QCR).In present work, we describe experimental setup for real-time sensing of roses' aroma and feature extraction of roses' aroma sensed by QCR sensors. This method can distinguish as different aroma as human sense of smell judged for two kinds of roses. We measured one rose's aroma 3 times repeatedly in first day, second day and third day, respectively, and the result shows that rose aroma of first day is different from the ones of the other two days.

Abstract

An experiment to search for the $K^-pp$ bound state was performed via the in-flight $^3$He($K^-,n)$ reaction using 5.3 $\times$ $10^9$ kaons at 1 GeV/$c$ at the J-PARC hadron experimental facility. In the semi-inclusive neutron missing-mass spectrum at $\theta_{n}^{lab}=0^\circ$, no significant peak was observed in the region corresponding to $K^-pp$ binding energy larger than 80 MeV, where a bump structure has been reported in the $\Lambda p$ final state in different reactions. Assuming the state to be isotropically decaying into $\Lambda p$, mass-dependent upper limits on the production cross section were determined to be 30--180, 70--250, and 100--270 $\mu$b/sr, for the natural widths of 20, 60, and 100 MeV, respectively, at 95\% confidence level., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

This study answers several pending questions about alumina-catalyzed epoxidation with aqueous 70 wt% H 2 O 2 . To evaluate the effect of the water-to-aluminum tri- sec -butoxide molar ratio, this was systematically changed from 1 to 24. The xerogels were calcined at 450 °C and gave different γ -Al 2 O 3 's with distinct textural and acidic properties. A combination of 27 Al MAS NMR and TPD-NH 3 results of calcined aluminas allowed us to assign the type Ia Al OH sites as the catalytic sites for epoxidation. The type Ib Al OH sites have no function in catalytic epoxidation, because ethyl acetate poisons these sites. The strong acid sites of types IIa, IIb, and III Al OH groups are responsible for the undesired H 2 O 2 decomposition and decreased oxidant selectivity.

Abstract

The changes in the structural, morphological and acidity properties of nanocrystalline aluminas provoked by hydration under a controlled humidity atmosphere at room temperature were studied. Besides the physical and chemical adsorption of water on the surface, the hydration process causes the formation of aluminum oxy-hydroxide and trihydroxide (boehmite and bayerite). The recalcination of hydrated γ-Al2O3 cannot recuperate the initial acidic properties of the material. The populations of weak to moderate acid sites strongly decrease under recalcination of hydrated aluminas. On the other hand, the stronger acid site populations are not strongly affected by recalcination.

Abstract

A Bombyx EST cDNA database was searched using the Drosophila takeout gene and nine cDNAs were obtained. The homology search suggested that these genes are widespread in insects and organize a large gene family, and that they have hydrophobic ligands. A phylogenetic tree indicated that the genes are first divided into two large groups, juvenile hormone binding protein and other protein genes, and the latter group diversified within a short time at an early stage. The expression study of five Bombyx genes indicated that they are expressed in various tissues and are regulated by development and feeding conditions. The Bombyx genes might have roles related to the regulation of metabolism, growth or development related to nutritional conditions.

Abstract

A golden yellow-colored cerium dioxide film has been deposited by immersion of an electroplated-nickel substrate into an aqueous solution containing 0.02 mol L −1 cerium nitrate at temperatures ranging between 303 and 343 K. The deposition rate of the film increased with an increase in solution temperature. The films exhibited good adhesion to nickel substrate. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XRD analysis revealed that the crystalline CeO 2 thin films with a fluorite structure were formed directly on the nickel substrate. XPS analysis suggested that the films mainly consisted of cerium(IV) oxide, while the surface was covered with hydroxide.

To study the cosmic ray anisotropy, a harmonic analysis is performed on the EAS arrrival LSTs (local sidereal times) observed by the LAAS group. The amplitude and phase of the first harmonic obtained are 0.23 ± 0.04 % and 0.4 ± 0.7 hr LST in the energy region from 5 × 10 13 to 10 15 eV .

Abstract

Using data from 2.5 years of observations with the Large Area Air Shower (LAAS) experiments in Okayama area, we report the cosmic ray energy spectrum obtained by applying cuts on the number of coincidences of 4 extensive air shower (EAS) arrays, which are synchronized by GPS time stamp system with an accuracy of 1 μs. The spectral indices in the energy ranges of 1015 – 1016eV and 1016 – 1018eV are obtained and are consistent with assumed ones within statistical errors. The methods to determine the energy spectrum without evaluating the parameters for each individual EAS in each LAAS array, are reported in this paper. The performances of each single array are simulated as well as those of multiple arrays coincident within a several μs time interval.

Abstract

The probabilities of observing simultaneous parallel extensive air showers (EAS) produced by nuclear fragments of cosmic ray nuclei which disintegrated in collisions with solar photons are calculated as function of longitudinal angle from the sun direction. The mean separation distances of such events are also numerically simulated by analyzing fragment trajectories of nuclei in the solar magnetic field. We report on candidates of events observed at both small and long baseline array combinations in LAAS in this paper.
