The observation of chirality is ubiquitous in nature. Contrary to intuition, the population of opposite chiralities is surprisingly asymmetric at fundamental levels. Examples range from parity violation in the subatomic weak force to the homochirality in essential biomolecules. The ability to achieve chirality-selective synthesis (chiral induction) is of great importance in stereochemistry, molecular biology and pharmacology. In condensed matter physics, a crystalline electronic system is geometrically chiral when it lacks any mirror plane, space inversion center or roto-inversion axis. Typically, the geometrical chirality is predefined by a material's chiral lattice structure, which is fixed upon the formation of the crystal. By contrast, a particularly unconventional scenario is the gyrotropic order, where chirality spontaneously emerges across a phase transition as the electron system breaks the relevant symmetries of an originally achiral lattice. Such a gyrotropic order, proposed as the quantum analogue of the cholesteric liquid crystals, has attracted significant interest. However, to date, a clear observation and manipulation of the gyrotropic order remain challenging. We report the realization of optical chiral induction and the observation of a gyrotropically ordered phase in the transition-metal dichalcogenide semimetal $1T$-TiSe$_2$. We show that shining mid-infrared circularly polarized light near the critical temperature leads to the preferential formation of one chiral domain. As a result, we are able to observe an out-of-plane circular photogalvanic current, whose direction depends on the optical induction. Our study provides compelling evidence for the spontaneous emergence of chirality in the correlated semimetal TiSe$_2$. The interplay between topology and magnetism is essential for realizing novel topological states including the axion insulator, the magnetic Weyl semimetal, etc. An intrinsically ferromagnetic topological material with only the topological bands at the charge neutrality energy has so far remained elusive. By rationally designing the natural heterostructure consisting of [MnBi2Te4] septuple layers and [Bi2Te3] quintuple layers, we report MnBi8Te13 as the first intrinsic ferromagnetic topological material with clean low-energy band structure. Based on the thermodynamic, transport and neutron diffraction measurements, our data show that despite the adjacent [MnBi2Te4] being 44.1 {\AA} apart, MnBi8Te13 manifests long-range ferromagnetism below 10.5 K with strong coupling between magnetism and charge carriers. Our first-principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements further demonstrate that MnBi8Te13 is an intrinsic ferromagnetic axion state. Therefore, MnBi8Te13 serves as an ideal system to investigate rich emergent phenomena, including the quantized anomalous Hall effect and quantized topological magnetoelectric effect., Comment: 6 figs

The nonlinear optical responses from topological semimetals are crucial in both understanding the fundamental properties of quantum materials and designing next-generation light-sensors or solar-cells. However, previous work was focusing on the optical effects from bulk states only, disregarding topological surface responses. Here we propose a new (hitherto unknown) surface-only topological photocurrent response from chiral Fermi arcs. Using the ideal topological chiral semimetal RhSi as a representative, we quantitatively compute the topologically robust photocurrents from Fermi arcs on different surfaces. By rigorous crystal symmetry analysis, we demonstrate that Fermi arc photocurrents can be perpendicular to the bulk injection currents regardless of the choice of materials' surface. We then generalize this finding to all cubic chiral space groups and predict material candidates. Our theory reveals a powerful notion where common crystalline-symmetry can be used to induce universal topological responses as well as making it possible to completely disentangle bulk and surface topological responses in many conducting material families.

Recent theoretical advances have proposed a new class of topological crystalline insulator (TCI) phases protected by rotational symmetries. Distinct from topological insulators (TIs), rotational symmetry-protected TCIs are expected to show unique topologically protected boundary modes: First, the surface normal to the rotational axis features unpinned Dirac surface states whose Dirac points are located at generic k points. Second, due to the higher-order bulk boundary correspondence, a 3D TCI also supports 1D helical edge states. Despite the unique topological electronic properties, to date, purely rotational symmetry-protected TCIs remain elusive in real materials. Using first-principles band calculations and theoretical modeling, we identify the van der Waals material $\alpha$-Bi4Br4 as a TCI purely protected by rotation symmetry. We show that the Bi4Br4's (010) surface exhibits a pair of unpinned topological Dirac fermions protected by the two-fold rotational axis. These unpinned Dirac fermions show an exotic spin texture highly favorable for spin transport and a band structure consisting of van Hove singularities due to Lifshitz transition. We also identify 1D topological hinge states along the edges of an $\alpha$-Bi4Br4 rod. We further discuss how the proposed topological electronic properties in $\alpha$-Bi4Br4 can be observed by various experimental techniques.

Three-dimensional (3D) topological semimetals represent a new class of topological matters. The study of this family of materials has been at the frontiers of condensed matter physics, and many breakthroughs have been made. Several topological semimetal phases, including Dirac semimetals (DSMs), Weyl semimetals (WSMs), nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs), and triple-point semimetals, have been theoretically predicted and experimentally demonstrated. The low-energy excitation around the Dirac/Weyl nodal points, nodal line, or triply degenerated nodal point can be viewed as emergent relativistic fermions. Experimental studies have shown that relativistic fermions can result in a rich variety of exotic transport properties, e.g., extremely large magnetoresistance, the chiral anomaly, and the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect. In this review, we first briefly introduce band structural characteristics of each topological semimetal phase, then review the current studies on quantum oscillations and exotic transport properties of various topological semimetals, and finally provide a perspective of this area., Comment: To appear in Annual Review of Materials Research

Rectification is a process that converts electromagnetic fields into a direct current. Such a process underlies a wide range of technologies such as wireless communication, wireless charging, energy harvesting, and infrared detection. Existing rectifiers are mostly based on semiconductor diodes, with limited applicability to small voltage or high frequency inputs. Here, we present an alternative approach to current rectification that uses the intrinsic electronic properties of quantum crystals without using semiconductor junctions. We identify a previously unknown mechanism for rectification from skew scattering due to the inherent chirality of itinerant electrons in time-reversal-invariant but inversion-breaking materials. Our calculations reveal large, tunable rectification effects in graphene multilayers and transition metal dichalcogenides. When the Fermi level matches the Dirac point in graphene, the reduced charge screening can dramatically enhance electron-electron (e-e) scattering to produce a strongly interacting Dirac liquid. While the dominance of e-e scattering already leads to novel behaviors, such as electron hydrodynamic flow, further exotic phenomena have been predicted to arise specifically from the unique kinematics of e-e scattering in massless Dirac systems. Here, we use optoelectronic probes, which are highly sensitive to the kinematics of electron scattering, to uncover a giant intrinsic photocurrent response in pristine graphene. This photocurrent emerges exclusively at the charge neutrality point and vanishes abruptly at non-zero charge densities. Moreover, it is observed at places with broken reflection symmetry, and it is selectively enhanced at free graphene edges with sharp bends. Our findings reveal that the photocurrent relaxation is strongly suppressed by a drastic change of fast photocarrier kinematics in graphene when its Fermi level matches the Dirac point. The emergence of robust photocurrents in neutral Dirac materials promises new energy-harvesting functionalities and highlights intriguing electron dynamics in the optoelectronic response of Dirac fluids., Comment: Originally submitted version

The quantum behaviour of electrons in materials lays the foundation for modern electronic and information technology. Quantum materials with novel electronic and optical properties have been proposed as the next frontier, but much remains to be discovered to actualize the promise. Here we report the first observation of topological quantum properties of chiral crystals in the RhSi family. We demonsrate that this material hosts novel phase of matter exhibiting nearly ideal topological surface properties that emerge as a consequence of the crystals' structural chirality or handedness. We also demonstrate that the electrons on the surface of this crystal show a highly unusual helicoid structure that spirals around two high-symmetry momenta signalling its topological electronic chirality. Such helicoid Fermi arcs on the surface experimentally characterize the topological charges of $\pm{2}$, which arise from the bulk chiral fermions. The existence of bulk high-fold degenerate fermions are guaranteed by the crystal symmetries, however, in order to determine the topological charge in the chiral crystals it is essential to identify and study the helical arc states. Remarkably, these topological conductors we discovered exhibit helical Fermi arcs which are of length $\pi$, stretching across the entire Brillouin zone and orders of magnitude larger than those found in all known Weyl semimetals. Our results demonstrate novel electronic topological state of matter on a structurally chiral crystal featuring helicoid Fermi arc surface states. The exotic electronic chiral fermion state realised in these materials can be used to detect a quantised photogalvanic optical response or the chiral magnetic effect and its optical version in future devices as described by G. We propose a novel design of a true 3D chiral metasurface behaving as a spatial polarization converter with asymmetric transmission. The metasurface is made of a lattice of metallic sesquialteral (one and a half pitch) helical particles. Each particle contains six rectangular bars arranged in a series one above the another creating a helix The proposed metasurface exhibits a dual-band asymmetric transmission accompanied by the effect of a complete polarization conversion in the response on the particular distributions of currents induced in the particle's bars by an incident wave. Regarding circularly polarized waves the metasurface demonstrates a strong circular dichroism. A prototype of the metasurface is manufactured for the microwave experiment by using 3D-printing technique utilizing Cobalt-Chromium alloy, which exhibits good performances against thermal fatigue and corrosion at high temperatures. We reveal peculiarities of the trapped (dark) mode excitation in a polarization-insensitive all-dielectric metasurface, whose unit super-cell is constructed by particularly arranging four cylindrical dielectric particles. Involving group-theoretical description we discuss in detail the effect of different orientations of particles within the super-cell on characteristics of the trapped mode. The theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations and experimental investigations. Since the metasurface is realized from simple dielectric particles without the use of any metallic components, they are feasibly scalable to both micro- and nanometer-size structures, and they can be employed in flat-optics platforms for realizing efficient light-matter interaction for multiple hotspot light localization, optical sensing, and highly-efficient light trapping., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Owing to the unusual geometry of kagome lattices-lattices made of corner-sharing triangles-their electrons are useful for studying the physics of frustrated, correlated and topological quantum electronic states. In the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, the magnetic and electronic structures of kagome lattices are further entangled, which can lead to hitherto unknown spin-orbit phenomena. Here we use a combination of vector-magnetic-field capability and scanning tunnelling microscopy to elucidate the spin-orbit nature of the kagome ferromagnet Fe3Sn2 and explore the associated exotic correlated phenomena. We discover that a many-body electronic state from the kagome lattice couples strongly to the vector field with three-dimensional anisotropy, exhibiting a magnetization-driven giant nematic (two-fold-symmetric) energy shift. Probing the fermionic quasi-particle interference reveals consistent spontaneous nematicity-a clear indication of electron correlation-and vector magnetization is capable of altering this state, thus controlling the many-body electronic symmetry. These spin-driven giant electronic responses go well beyond Zeeman physics and point to the realization of an underlying correlated magnetic topological phase. The tunability of this kagome magnet reveals a strong interplay between an externally applied field, electronic excitations and nematicity, providing new ways of controlling spin-orbit properties and exploring emergent phenomena in topological or quantum materials., Comment: Nature, online (2018)

The electrical Hall effect is the production of a transverse voltage under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Historically, studies of the Hall effect have led to major breakthroughs including the discoveries of Berry curvature and the topological Chern invariants. In magnets, the internal magnetization allows Hall conductivity in the absence of external magnetic field. This anomalous Hall effect (AHE) has become an important tool to study quantum magnets. In nonmagnetic materials without external magnetic fields, the electrical Hall effect is rarely explored because of the constraint by time-reversal symmetry. However, strictly speaking, only the Hall effect in the linear response regime, i.e., the Hall voltage linearly proportional to the external electric field, identically vanishes due to time-reversal symmetry. The Hall effect in the nonlinear response regime, on the other hand, may not be subject to such symmetry constraints. Here, we report the observation of the nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) in the electrical transport of the nonmagnetic 2D quantum material, bilayer WTe2. Specifically, flowing an electrical current in bilayer WTe2 leads to a nonlinear Hall voltage in the absence of magnetic field. The NLHE exhibits unusual properties sharply distinct from the AHE in metals: The NLHE shows a quadratic I-V characteristic; It strongly dominates the nonlinear longitudinal response, leading to a Hall angle of about 90 degree. We further show that the NLHE directly measures the "dipole moment" of the Berry curvature, which arises from layer-polarized Dirac fermions in bilayer WTe2. Our results demonstrate a new Hall effect and provide a powerful methodology to detect Berry curvature in a wide range of nonmagnetic quantum materials in an energy-resolved way.

The charge density wave (CDW) in 1T-TiSe2 accompanied by the periodic lattice distortion has a nontrivial symmetry configuration. The symmetry is important as an indication of the mechanism and a cue for experimental probes. We examine the symmetry of the system and clear up the connection of electronic structures between the normal and the CDW states. Especially, we unravel the consequential irreducible representations (IRs) of electronic states and, more ahead, those of gap functions among bands when the CDW occurs. Normally symmetry-related topology will be achieved directly, so we assert that the theory is valuable and practical for the search of topological CDW insulators., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Recent experimental evidence for the quantum spin Hall (QSH) state in monolayer WTe$_2$ has bridged two of the most active fields of condensed matter physics, 2D materials and topological physics. This 2D topological crystal also displays unconventional spin-torque and gate-tunable superconductivity. While the realization of QSH has demonstrated the nontrivial topology of the electron wavefunctions of monolayer WTe$_2$, the geometrical properties of the wavefunction, such as the Berry curvature, remain unstudied. On the other hand, it has been increasingly recognized that the Berry curvature plays an important role in multiple areas of condensed matter physics including nonreciprocal electron transport, enantioselective optical responses, chiral polaritons and even unconventional superconductivity. Here we utilize mid-infrared optoelectronic microscopy to investigate the Berry curvature in monolayer WTe$_2$. By optically exciting electrons across the inverted QSH gap, we observe an in-plane circular photogalvanic current even under normal incidence. The application of an out-of-plane displacement field further systematically controls the direction and magnitude of the photocurrent. Our observed photocurrent reveals a novel Berry curvature dipole that arises from the nontrivial wavefunctions near the inverted gap edge. These previously unrealized Berry curvature dipole and strong electric field effect are uniquely enabled by the inverted band structure and tilted crystal lattice of monolayer WTe$_2$. Such an electrically switchable Berry curvature dipole opens the door to the observation of a wide range of quantum geometrical phenomena, such as quantum nonlinear Hall, orbital-Edelstein and chiral polaritonic effects., Comment: Originally submitted version, main text combined with part of the SI

Topological crystalline insulators (TCI) are insulating electronic phases of matter with nontrivial topology originating from crystalline symmetries. Recent theoretical advances have provided powerful guidelines to search for TCIs in real materials. Using density functional theory, we identify a class of new TCI states in the tetragonal lattice of the Ca$_2$As material family. On both top and side surfaces, we observe topological surface states protected independently by rotational and mirror symmetries. We show that a particular lattice distortion can single out the newly proposed topological protection by the rotational symmetry. As a result, the Dirac points of the topological surface states are moved to generic locations in momentum space away from any high symmetry lines. Such topological surface states have not been seen before. Moreover, the other family members, including Ca$_2$Sb, Ca$_2$Bi and Sr$_2$Sb, feature different topological surface states due to their distinct topological invariants. We thus further propose topological phase transitions in the pseudo-binary systems such as (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)$_2$As and Ca$_2$As$_x$Sb$_{1-x}$. We study the quantum nonlinear Hall effect in two-dimensional materials with time-reversal symmetry. When only one mirror line exists, a transverse charge current occurs in second-order response to an external electric field, as a result of the Berry curvature dipole in momentum space. Candidate 2D materials to observe this effect are two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides~(TMDCs). First we use an ab initio based tight-binding approach to demonstrate that monolayer $T_d$-stricture TMDCs exhibit a finite Berry curvature dipole. In the $1H$ and $1T'$ phase of TMDCs, we show the emergence of finite Berry curvature dipole with the application of strain and electrical displacement field respectively., Comment: 4 figures
