The key to its success is the introduction of a bipyridine-type bidentate auxiliary, 4,4′-di(tert-butyl)-2,2′-bipyridine, on the phenol oxygen, which is readily prepared and easily attachable, detachable, and recyclable. The reaction proceeds smoothly in the presence of copper salt alone to form the corresponding phenol-azole heterobiaryls, which are prevalent motifs in functional molecules such as excited-state intramolecular proton transfer materials.

The key to success is the introduction of bidentately coordinating phenanthroline directing group, which enables the otherwise challenging and regioselective C−H activation at the proximal alkenyl C−H bonds over the conceivably competitive allylic C−O bond activation. The same Pd/phenanthroline system is efficient for the C−H alkynylation of allylic alcohols with alkynyl bromides.

Additionally, no stereochemical erosion is observed during the course of the reaction, and the use of enantioenriched and substituted oxetane thus provides a new avenue to the optically active benzolactone.

Abstract

Molecules that contain one or more fluorine atoms are crucial to drug discovery. There are protocols available for the selective synthesis of different organofluorine compounds, including those with a fluoro-substituted or a trifluoromethyl-substituted stereogenic carbon centre. However, approaches for synthesizing compounds with a trifluoromethyl- and fluoro-substituent stereogenic carbon centre are far less common. This potentially impactful set of molecules thus remains severely underdeveloped. Here we introduce a catalytic regio-, diastereo- and enantioselective strategy for the preparation of homoallylic alcohols bearing a stereogenic carbon centre bound to a trifluoromethyl group and a fluorine atom. The process, which involves a polyfluoroallyl boronate and is catalysed by an in situ-formed organozinc complex, can be used for diastereodivergent preparation of tetrafluoro-monosaccharides, including ribose core analogues of the antiviral drug sofosbuvir (Sovaldi). Unexpected reactivity/selectivity profiles, probably originating from the trifluoromethyl- and fluoro-substituted carbon site, are discovered, foreshadowing other unique chemistries that remain unknown.

Abstract

Triplicated traveltime curve has three arrivals at a given distance with the bowtie shape in the traveltime-offset curve. The existence of the triplication can cause a lot of problems such as several arrivals for the same wave type, anomalous amplitudes near caustics, anomalous behaviour of rays near caustics, which leads to the structure imaging deviation and redundant signal in the inversion of the model parameters. Hence, triplication prediction becomes necessary when the medium is known. The research of the triplication in transversely isotropic medium with a vertical symmetry axis (VTI) has been well investigated and it has become clear that, apart from the point singularity case, the triplicated traveltime only occurs for S wave. On contrary to the VTI case, the triplication behaviour in the orthorhombic (ORT) medium has not been well focused due to the model complexity. In this paper, we derive the second-order coefficients of the slowness surface for two S waves in the vicinity of three symmetry axes and define the elliptic form function to examine the existence of the on-axis triplication in ORT model. The existence of the on-axis triplication is found by the sign of the defined curvature coefficients. Three ORT models are defined in the numerical examples to analyse the behaviour of the on-axis triplication. The plots of the group velocity surface in the vicinity of three symmetry axes are shown for different ORT models where different shapes: convex or the saddle-shaped (concave along one direction and convex along with another) indicates the existence of the on-axis triplication. Abstract

In seismic data processing, serious problems could be caused by the existence of triplication and need to be treated properly for tomography and other inversion methods. The triplication in transversely isotropic medium with a vertical symmetry axis has been well studied and concluded that the triplicated traveltime only occurs for S wave and there is no triplication for P and converted PS waves since the P wave convexity slowness always compensates the S wave slowness concavity. Compared with the vertical symmetry axis model, the research of the triplication in transversely isotropic medium with a tilted symmetry axis is still keeping blank. In order to analyse the triplication for the converted wave in the tilted symmetry axis model, we examine the traveltime of the triplication from the curvature of averaged P and S wave slowness. Three models are defined and tested in the numerical examples to illustrate the behaviour of the tilted symmetry axis model for the triplicated traveltime with the change of the rotation angle. Since the orientation of an interface is related to the orientation of the symmetry axis, the triplicated traveltime is encountered for the converted wave in the tilted symmetry axis model assuming interfaces to be planar and horizontal.
