115. A self-fused hydrogel for the treatment of glottic insufficiency through outstanding durability, extracellular matrix-inducing bioactivity and function preservation

Abstract

Injection laryngoplasty with biomaterials is an effective technique to treat glottic insufficiency. However, the inadequate durability, deficient pro-secretion of extracellular matrix (ECM) and poor functional preservation of current biomaterials have yielded an unsatisfactory therapeutic effect. Herein, a self-fusing bioactive hydrogel comprising modified carboxymethyl chitosan and sodium alginate is developed through a dual-crosslinking mechanism (photo-triggered and dynamic covalent bonds). Owing to its characteristic networks, the synergistic effect of the hydrogel for vocal folds (VFs) vibration and phonation is adequately demonstrated. Notably, owing to its inherent bioactivity of polysaccharides, the hydrogel could significantly enhance the secretion of major components (type I/III collagen and elastin) in the lamina propria of the VFs both in vivo and in vitro. In a rabbit model for glottic insufficiency, the optimized hydrogel (C1A1) has demonstrated a durability far superior to that of the commercially made hyaluronic acid (HA) Gel. More importantly, owing to the ECM-inducing bioactivity, the physiological functions of the VFs treated with the C1A1 hydrogel also outperformed that of the HA Gel, and were similar to those of the normal VFs. Taken together, through a simple-yet-effective strategy, the novel hydrogel has demonstrated outstanding durability, ECM-inducing bioactivity and physiological function preservation, therefore has an appealing clinical value for treating glottic insufficiency.

Abstract

Video super-resolution, which attempts to reconstruct high-resolution video frames from their corresponding low-resolution versions, has received increasingly more attention in recent years. Most existing approaches opt to use deformable convolution to temporally align neighboring frames and apply traditional spatial attention mechanism (convolution based) to enhance reconstructed features. However, such spatial-only strategies cannot fully utilize temporal dependency among video frames. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning based VSR algorithm, named Deformable Kernel Spatial Attention Network (DKSAN). Thanks to newly designed Deformable Kernel Convolution Alignment (DKC_Align) and Deformable Kernel Spatial Attention (DKSA) modules, DKSAN can better exploit both spatial and temporal redundancies to facilitate the information propagation across different layers. We have tested DKSAN on AIM2020 Video Extreme Super-Resolution Challenge to super-resolve videos with a scale factor as large as 16. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed DKSAN can achieve both better subjective and objective performance compared with the existing state-of-the-art EDVR on Vid3oC and IntVID datasets., Comment: To appear in ECCVW 2020

Abstract

This paper reviews the video extreme super-resolution challenge associated with the AIM 2020 workshop at ECCV 2020. Common scaling factors for learned video super-resolution (VSR) do not go beyond factor 4. Missing information can be restored well in this region, especially in HR videos, where the high-frequency content mostly consists of texture details. The task in this challenge is to upscale videos with an extreme factor of 16, which results in more serious degradations that also affect the structural integrity of the videos. A single pixel in the low-resolution (LR) domain corresponds to 256 pixels in the high-resolution (HR) domain. Due to this massive information loss, it is hard to accurately restore the missing information. Track 1 is set up to gauge the state-of-the-art for such a demanding task, where fidelity to the ground truth is measured by PSNR and SSIM. Perceptually higher quality can be achieved in trade-off for fidelity by generating plausible high-frequency content. Track 2 therefore aims at generating visually pleasing results, which are ranked according to human perception, evaluated by a user study. In contrast to single image super-resolution (SISR), VSR can benefit from additional information in the temporal domain. However, this also imposes an additional requirement, as the generated frames need to be consistent along time.

119. Optimization study of finite element simulation based on multi-layer structure and anisotropic CFRP

Abstract

Introduction: Current research has mostly simplified CFRP components as isotropic media or homogenized them as anisotropic media, which fails to present the actual acoustic propagation behavior inside the CFRP components and restricts the accuracy of decoupling sound line tracking results and defect feature information.Method: Based on clarifying the influence of fiber direction on the spatial distribution of CFRP elastic properties, this paper proposes an acoustic modeling method for CFRP multi-directional plates considering the coupling effect of multi-layer structure and elastic anisotropy.Results: There are two main innovations: 1. The model is optimized using the Voigt representation method, which can quantitatively characterize the elastic anisotropy of any homogeneous material with a 6 × 6 elastic stiffness matrix containing 21 independent elastic constants. In this paper, the elastic stiffness matrix only includes five independent elastic constants; 2. Finite element simulation is used to analyze the propagation rules of ultrasonic waves inside CFRP and compare the detection methods with or without sound coupling layer.Discussion: The acoustic characteristics of the sound coupling layer are changed to find the optimal coupling method, reduce the refraction of ultrasonic waves in the specimen layer, and make the sound line path more accurate.

Abstract

Point cloud analysis is a fundamental task in 3D computer vision. Most previous works have conducted experiments on synthetic datasets with well-aligned data; while real-world point clouds are often not pre-aligned. How to achieve rotation invariance remains an open problem in point cloud analysis. To meet this challenge, we propose a novel approach toward achieving rotation-invariant (RI) representations by combining local geometry with global topology. In our local-global-representation (LGR)-Net, we have designed a two-branch network where one stream encodes local geometric RI features and the other encodes global topology-preserving RI features. Motivated by the observation that local geometry and global topology have different yet complementary RI responses in varying regions, two-branch RI features are fused by an innovative multi-layer perceptron (MLP) based attention module. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first principled approach toward adaptively combining global and local information under the context of RI point cloud analysis. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that our LGR-Net achieves the state-of-the-art performance on various rotation-augmented versions of ModelNet40, ShapeNet, ScanObjectNN, and S3DIS.

Abstract

Abstract Urinary stone is conceptualized as a chronic metabolic disorder punctuated by symptomatic stone events. It has been shown that the occurrence of calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) during stone formation is regulated by crystal growth modifiers. Although crystallization inhibitors have been recognized as a therapeutic modality for decades, limited progress has been made in the discovery of effective modifiers to intervene with stone disease. In this study, we have used metabolomics technologies, a powerful approach to identify biomarkers by screening the urine components of the dynamic progression in a bladder stone model. By in-depth mining and analysis of metabolomics data, we have screened five differential metabolites. Through density functional theory studies and bulk crystallization, we found that three of them (salicyluric, gentisic acid and succinate) could effectively inhibit nucleation in vitro. We thereby assessed the impact of the inhibitors with an EG-induced rat model for kidney stones. Notably, succinate, a key player in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, could decrease kidney calcium deposition and injury in the model. Transcriptomic analysis further showed that the protective effect of succinate was mainly through anti-inflammation, inhibition of cell adhesion and osteogenic differentiation. These findings indicated that succinate may provide a new therapeutic option for urinary stones.
