This article takes 14 prefectures in Xinjiang as the research object, constructs an evaluation index system for new urbanization and intensive use of arable land, and comprehensively uses methods such as entropy method and coupling coordinated development model to study the comprehensive development level and spatiotemporal characteristics of the coupling coordinated development level between the two systems in Xinjiang from 2010 to 2020. The results show that the development level of new urbanization in Xinjiang is on the rise as a whole, but there are large differences among regions. Except for Urumqi, the development potential of new urbanization in other regions is still strong. Although the level of intensive use of cultivated land in the whole region is on the rise, the overall effect is not obvious. The level of intensive use of cultivated land is generally low except for Kashgar and Altay. In addition, the coupling and coordination degree of the two systems is mainly concentrated between “near imbalance” and “moderate coordination”. Therefore, on the basis of existing resources, Xinjiang should adjust measures to local conditions, steadily promote the construction of new urbanization, and simultaneously improve the intensive utilization of arable land, strengthen financial and technological investment, improve infrastructure, in order to coordinate development. [Objectives] To determine the potential habitat range of Caragana acanthophylla in Xinjiang. [Methods] The known distribution points of C acanthophylla were used as samples, and a MaxEnt model was developed based on their climatic variables to identify key environmental factors afecting the potential habitats of C acanthophylla through jackknife method and construction of a response relationship between representative variables and habitat suitability; the suitability of habitats for C acanthophylla in Xinjiang was evaluated based on the output results of the model. [ Results] ( i) The accuracy of the model verified by AUC curve was 0. 971, indicating that the potential habitats of C acanthophylla in Xinjiang predicted by MaEnt model were highly credible. % ii) The optimum climatic characteristics for the distribution of C acanthophylla in Xinjiang were: isothermality 18.8% -34%, minimum temperature of coldest month -30°C to -13°C, mean temperature of coldest quarter - 18°C to -4°C, annual precipitation 80 -410 mm, precipitation of driest month 0-25 mm, precipitation of driest quarter 0-82 mm, and precipitation of coldest quarter 0-75 mm. ( iii) The total potential distribution area of C acanthophylla in Xinjiang was modeled to be 1. 03 X 105 km², of which 8. 54 X 10³ km² was high suitability area, manly in the front mountain belt of the north slope of Tianshan Mountain in Urumqi City, Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, and Yili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture and the front mountain belt of Baluk Mountain in Tacheng Prefecture. As basal group of mega-diverse Cicadelloidea (leafhoppers), the Mesozoic family Archijassidae has been widely recorded from the Upper Triassic of Australia and the Lower Jurassic to mid-Cretaceous of Eurasia; its precise document in China, however, is scarce. We herein describe and illustrate Karamayojassus xinjiangensis gen. et sp. n. based upon an isolated tegmen from the Lower Jurassic Badaowan Formation at the Tuziakeneigou outcrop of Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, NW China, representing the first discovery of Archijassidae in the Jurassic of China. The new genus and species can be attributed to the subfamily Archijassinae on the basis of a series of venational characteristics, and is distinctly discriminated from known archijassines by some critical tegminal traits. Karamayojassus gen. n. is likely related to the two genera (Cixiella and Mesocicada) from the Lower Jurassic of Kyrgyzstan by sharing a synapomorphic venational feature (long stem R + M present). We propose to resurrect Cixiella and Mesojassus from synonymy, since the two genera possess tegminal venation distinctly different from that of Archijassus. Prediction of fine particulate matter with particle size less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) is an important component of atmospheric pollution warning and control management. In this study, we propose a deep learning model, namely, a spatiotemporal weighted neural network (STWNN), to address the challenge of poor long-term PM2.5 prediction in areas with sparse and uneven stations. The model, which is based on convolutional neural network–bidirectional long short-term memory (CNN–Bi-LSTM) and attention mechanisms and uses a geospatial data-driven approach, considers the spatiotemporal heterogeneity effec It is correct.ts of PM2.5. This approach effectively overcomes instability caused by sparse station data in forecasting daily average PM2.5 concentrations over the next week. The effectiveness of the STWNN model was evaluated using the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region as the study area. Experimental results demonstrate that the STWNN exhibits higher performance (RMSE = 10.29, MAE = 6.4, R2 = 0.96, and IA = 0.81) than other models in overall prediction and seasonal clustering. Furthermore, the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method was introduced to calculate the contribution and spatiotemporal variation of feature variables after the STWNN prediction model. The SHAP results indicate that the STWNN has significant potential in improving the performance of long-term PM2.5 prediction at the regional station level. Analyzing spatiotemporal differences in key feature variables that influence PM2.5 provides a scientific foundation for long-term pollution control and supports emergency response planning for heavy pollution events. Background: Hyalomma ticks are widely distributed in semi-arid zones in Northwest China. They have been reported to harbor a large number of zoonotic pathogens. Methods: In this study, a total of 334 Hyalomma asiaticum ticks infesting domestic animals were collected from four locations in Xinjiang, Northwest China, and the bacterial agents in them were investigated. Results: A putative novel Borrelia species was identified in ticks from all four locations, with an overall positive rate of 6.59%. Rickettsia sibirica subsp. mongolitimonae, a human pathogen frequently reported in Europe, was detected for the second time in China. Two Ehrlichia species (Ehrlichia minasensis and Ehrlichia sp.) were identified. Furthermore, two Anaplasma species were characterized in this study: Candidatus Anaplasma camelii and Anaplasma sp. closely related to Candidatus Anaplasma boleense. It is the first report of Candidatus Anaplasma camelii in China. Conclusions: Six bacterial agents were reported in this study, many of which are possible or validated pathogens for humans and animals. Wuqia is located in the western part of Xinjiang, with a special flora. Based on field investigations of the region, through specimen research and literature review, Didymophysa Boiss., a newly recorded genus of Brassicaceae from western Xinjiang, China is reported. Didymophysa Boiss. have three species, D. fedtschenkoana Regel, D. aucheri Boiss. and D. fenestrata. The morphological description and the distinctive features to the species of Didymophysa are provided, and the detailed morphological description and photographs of D. fedtschenkoana Regel are provided. Lastly, the biogeographical significance of the discovery of newly recorded genus and species was discussed, as well as the plant diversity, specificity, and work recommendations in the western plateau region of Xinjiang. With the development of detrital zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotope analysis as conventional sedimentological research methods, a large number of studies have been conducted in the Tarim, West Kunlun, Tajik, Pamir and Tianshuihai regions and abundant data have been accumulated. Summarizing these data to characterize sedimentary units and source regions is more important than local studies of specific geological epochs; therefore, we compiled a database of detrital zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotope analyses from the Tarim, West Kunlun, Pamir, Tajik and Tianshuihai terranes. The database contains data from 90 papers, including 35,281 individual U–Pb ages and 4,181 Hf isotope analyses. The database records the literature source, petrologic sample information, regional geological information, geographic coordinates and analytical parameters for each data point in as much detail as possible to allow readers to review, process, analyse and use the data. The database relies on the Deep‐time Digital Earth (DDE) platform and uses an open database update system to enable sharing and collaborative building. Based on a survey of and in-depth interviews with journalists working in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, a politically sensitive area with a strong Muslim presence, this study examines how socioeconomic attainments and subjective norms shape journalists' self-perceived status. Linking the study of journalists with social stratification theories, the data reveals that (1) The proportion of journalists who regard themselves as upper-middle and upper class is much higher than the proportion of the general public in this region and journalists in other regions in China. (2) Professional norms and the sense of achievement have more significant influence than income and education in shaping journalists' perceived social status. (3) The ethnic variation of self-perceived social status is manifested through different reference-grouping processes. As the first study on perceived social status of journalists in this region, these findings contribute to the general understanding of journalists, the government policies and the political and social landscape in this area. Objective To summarize the clinical features of infection-associated autoimmune encephalitis (IAE) with different antibodies in Xinjiang region, and to explore the diagnostic value of relevant laboratory indicators for IAE. Methods A total of 47 patients with IAE diagnosed and treated in People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uiger Autonomous Region from January 2018 to October 2023 were enrolled, including 18 cases (38.30%) of anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibody-associated encephalitis, 16 cases (34.04%) of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis, 8 cases (17.02%) of anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody-associated encephalitis, and 5 cases (10.64%) of anti-γ-aminobutyric acid receptor type B (GABABR) encephalitis. Social demographic data, clinical manifestations, laboratory and other examinations were collected, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn to evaluate the diagnostic value of relevant laboratory indicators for IAE. Results The age of onset (χ² = 9.500, P = 0.023), myasthenia (χ² = 9.967, P = 0.019), vision loss (χ² = 9.967, P = 0.019) and seizures (χ² = 8.046, P = 0.045), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) white blood cell count (χ² = 15.237, P = 0.002) and chloride (F = 4.156, P = 0.011) in patients with anti-LGI1 antibody-associated encephalitis, anti-NMDAR encephalitis, anti-MOG antibody-associated encephalitis and anti-GABABR encephalitis were statistically significant. The age of onset in patients with anti-LGI1 antibody-associated encephalitis was larger than that in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis (Z =-2.384, P = 0.017) and anti-MOG antibody-associated encephalitis (Z =-2.420, P = 0.016). The CSF white blood cell count in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis was higher than that in patients with anti-LGI1 antibody-associated encephalitis (Z =-3.307, P = 0.001) and anti-MOG antibody-associated encephalitis (Z =-2.835, P = 0.005). CSF chloride was higher in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis (t = 3.159, P = 0.007) and anti-GABABR encephalitis (t =-4.592, P = 0.007) than in patients with anti-LGI1 antibody-associated encephalitis. ROC curve showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of age of onset for diagnosis of anti-LGI1 antibody-associated encephalitis was 0.722 (95%CI: 0.569-0.875, P = 0.012), the sensitivity was 0.556, the specificity was 0.821, and the cut-off value was 54.50 years old. The AUC of CSF white blood cell count in the diagnosis of anti-LGI1 antibody-associated encephalitis was 0.706 (95%CI: 0.558-0.855, P = 0.019), the sensitivity was 0.889, the specificity was 0.571, and the cut-off value was 4.50 x 106/L. The AUC in the diagnosis of anti-NMDAR encephalitis was 0.790 (95%CI: 0.643-0.937, P = 0.002), the sensitivity was 0.600, the specificity was 0.967, and the cut-off value was 13.50 x 106/L. The AUC of CSF chloride for the diagnosis of anti-LGI1 antibody-associated encephalitis was 0.748 (95%CI: 0.598-0.898, P = 0.005), with a sensitivity of 0.722 and a specificity of 0.714, and a cut-off value of 122.70 mmol/L. Conclusions IAE with different antibodies in Xinjiang region has specific clinical features. Age of onset, CSF white blood cell count and chloride have important value in the diagnosis of anti-LGI1 antibody-associated encephalitis, and CSF white blood cell count has important value in the diagnosis of anti-NMDAR encephalitis. The fundamental component of the ecological compensation system, as well as the crucial basis for its efficient functioning, is calculating the ecological compensation amount and establishing the ecological compensation standard. This study integrates the ecological footprint with natural capital monetization and other methods by introducing a natural capital accounting system. From the standpoint of natural capital supply and demand, it also builds an accounting framework for ecological compensation standards that is standardized, dynamic, and regionally differentiated while taking local socioeconomic aspects into account. We determined the amount of ecological compensation by using Xinjiang as the research object and calculating and analyzing the features of regional and temporal changes in the monetary and physical quantities of natural capital in Xinjiang from 2010 to 2020. The findings show that from 2010 to 2020, Xinjiang's ecological footprint increased by 1.26 times in physical terms and 1.21 times in monetary terms and that its ecological carrying capacity increased by 4.13% in physical terms and 9.42% in monetary terms. The ecological deficit continues to grow in physical and monetary terms, with a per capita ecological deficit in 2020 of 19.92 s-nha/cap and 70,100 CNY/cap in physical and monetary terms, respectively. The amount of ecological compensation required to be paid in Xinjiang increased from CNY 5659 million to CNY 10,259 million, and the per capita ecological compensation payment standard increased from 259.42 CNY/cap/yr to 396.11 CNY/cap/yr. In summary, Xinjiang's natural capital supply is insufficient to meet the demand for consumption, and the ecological deficit is growing with time, necessitating the payment of ecological compensation. The study's results lay the foundation for formulating and implementing ecological compensation policies in Xinjiang and provide theoretical support for constructing ecological civilization in Xinjiang. In addition, the ecological compensation accounting framework constructed in this study organically integrates natural capital theory, ecosystem services, and socioeconomic influencing factors, which enriches the methodology of accounting for ecological compensation standards, and, at the same time, can be used as a paradigm of a dynamic and equitable ecological compensation accounting framework to further promote its use at different scales and regions. The study of the relationship between the central government and the borderlands to the west of China during the Nationalist Republican period (1912–1949) is relevant to our understanding of today’s policies and controversies in the Tibetan regions and Xinjiang. In this way, Frontier Fieldwork, a historical study, is important for engaging with the evolving debate on the political orientation and practice of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in this domain. The western provinces represent the one remaining serious unresolved problem of national integration in Mainland China regarding the country’s minority nationalities.

Background The prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA) is increasing year by year, and fewer studies have been conducted for the Xinjiang region. Because the population in Xinjiang has special regional and dietary characteristics, regional studies are necessary. Objective To investigate the current status of HUA among people aged≥35 years in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and explore the correlation of cardiometabolic index (CMI) with HUA among healthy population undergoing health examinations of different ethnicities and genders, so as to provide a reference basis for the development of personalized preventive measures for HUA patients in the region. Methods This was a cross-sectional study, and 9 429 medical examiners aged≥35 years who participated in health checkups at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from October 2021 to October 2022 were selected as the study subjects and divided into the HUA group (n=527) and the non-HUA group (n=8 902) according to the combination of HUA; and the study subjects were stratified into Q1 (CMI≤0.34) , Q2 (0.340.99) according to the CMI. General demographic information (gender, age, ethnicity) , past medical history (coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, stroke) , physical examination and laboratory test indices of the study subjects were collected and compared by reviewing the medical record system. A multivariate Logistic regression model was used to analyze the effect of CMI on the risk of HUA (model Ⅰ adjusted for age, gender, gender and BMI; model Ⅱ adjusted for age, gender, past history, urea nitrogen, etc.) , and the correlation between CMI and HUA was analyzed bystratification according to gender (male/female) and ethnicity (Han/Uyghur/Kazak) . Results There were 527 (5.58%) HUA patients among 9 429 medical examiners, with an average age of (54.3±12.9) years; 434 (82.4%) were male and 93 (17.6%) were female; 402 (76.3%) of them were Han nationality, 82 (15.5%) were Uyghurs, and 43 (8.2%) were Kazakhs. Abstract Background To investigate the prevalence and risk factors for astigmatism in 7-19-year-old students in Xinjiang, China. Methods A school-based, cross-sectional study was conducted on students who underwent refraction examination in Xinjiang, China, between May and December 2019. The prevalence of astigmatism was determined. Astigmatism was defined as cylinder power (C) ≤-0.75 D, undefined astigmatism as ≤-1.50 D, and high astigmatism as C ≤-3.00 D. Astigmatism types were: against-the-rule astigmatism (maximum refraction of the main meridian in 180° ± 30°), with-the-rule astigmatism (maximum refraction of the main meridian at 90°±30°), and oblique astigmatism (all other cases). Results Of the 71,838 students examined (51.0% boys, 7 − 19 years old), 25,945 (36.1%, 95%CI: 35.52−36.68%) had astigmatism and 1267 (1.8%, 95%CI: 1.07−2.53%) had high astigmatism. The prevalence of astigmatism was greater in Han individuals (39.6%) compared with the Hui (34.0%), Kazakh (34.0%), Kyrgyz (32.1%), and Uyghur (26.4%) populations. Among the 25,945 students with astigmatism, 19,947 had with-the-rule astigmatism (76.9%), 3405 had against-the-rule astigmatism (13.1%), and 2593 had oblique astigmatism (10.0%). Objective The 509 Daobanxi deposit in the West Kunlun orogenic belt is a newly discovered large pegmatite-type lithium-polymetallic deposit in northwestern China. As a typical granite pegmatite lithium deposit in the region, the metallogenic characteristics and pegmatite evolution of the 509 Daobanxi deposits are of great significance for understanding the entire lithium-polymetallic mineralization process of the West Kunlun metallogenic belt. The granite pegmatites contain assemblages of plagioclase, spodumene, quartz, muscovite, etc., exhibiting strong mylonization and forming typical ductile deformation characteristics in the 509 Daobanxi deposit. Quartz, an essential mineral in granite pegmatite, is ideal for tracking pegmatite's mineralization process and studying the deformation behavior of continental rocks in long-term geological history. Methods To study the late-stage emplacement process of pegmatite evolution, comprehensive analyses were conducted on the quartz deformation structures measurements, fluid inclusion temperature, and quartz trace elements for the 509 Daobanxi granite pegmatites. Cathodoluminescence (CL) analysis of quartz in deformed granite pegmatite samples was performed to reveal the compositional zoning of Ti in quartz. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was used to analyze 64 points from samples Zk2707-9 and Zk1107-2. Results The minerals of spodumene and plagioclase in deformed pegmatites primarily show brittle fracturing characteristics, with the features of rigid body deformation and the muscovite presence of mica-fish. Meanwhile, the conspicuous feature is that quartz grains mainly develop dynamic recrystallization and contain subgranis. According to the microstructural characteristics of spodumene, plagioclase, and quartz, the deformation temperature of mylonitized granite pegmatite is 300~400℃. The CL images of quartz bands in the granite pegmatite samples have no apparent zoning, indicating that the Ti content reaches a relative equilibrium state in the quartz deformation stage. The LA-ICP-MS analysis shows quartz from the 509 Daobanxi granite pegmatites contains a lower concentration of Ti (1.03 ×10−6 to 7.67×10−6 and 1.04 ×10−6 to 6.75×10−6), suggesting relatively lower deformation temperatures. The Ti-in-quartz thermobarometry indicates quartz deformation temperatures ranging from 371 to 398°C and 351 to 377°C, respectively. The thermometric measurement shows that homogenization temperatures of the quartz fluid inclusions in pegmatite varied from 260℃ to 283℃, likely recording the temperature of the late stage of pegmatite evolution. Conclusion Comprehensive analysis shows that the 509 Daobanxi granite pegmatites underwent a period of intense ductile deformation during the emplacement process, with low temperature and high strain rate. The emplacement of pegmatite is a product of the rapid cooling process, and the grain size reduction caused by dynamic recrystallization (GBM) under high-stress and low-temperature conditions profoundly changed the rheological properties of pegmatite. The supercooling process from ~400℃ to ~260℃ (ΔT=140℃±), resulting in less rapid mineral crystalline new nuclei in pegmatites, is more conducive to the formation of coarse quartz and other mineral particles, forming the significant characteristics of granite pegmatites. [ Significance ]In fact, the emplacement process of granitic pegmatites remains a puzzle, and high-quality, accurate systematic work is needed to understand the evolution process and behavior of granite pegmatite. By studying the 509 Daobanxi granite pegmatites, we proposed that the pegmatite emplacement was a product of the rapid cooling process, and supercooling plays an essential role in pegmatite emplacement. Similar deformation characteristics are widely developed in the Tugeman lithium deposit in the Altyn Tagh area and the Jiajika lithium deposit in the western Sichuan. Although the current work is preliminary, our study provides some clues for exploring the emplacement process of granitic pegmatites.

Ecosystem health is a key indicator of regional sustainable development and is important for guiding regional ecological improvement. However, long-term time-series analyses of ecosystem health, its drivers, and changes related to future trends have not yet been adequately carried out. Xinjiang, a typical Central Asian arid region, is taken as a case study, and an indicator system based on the driver–pressure–state–impact–response model is established. Then, an ecosystem health assessment method using the TOPSIS model with the combined weighting method is proposed, and the determinants influencing the health of ecosystems are scrutinized utilizing the geographical detector approach and the geographically weighted regression model. Finally, the future trend of ecosystem health change was predicted by applying the Hurst exponent combined with slope trend analysis. The findings reveal the following observations: First, between 2000 and 2020, the zones in Xinjiang demonstrating robust ecosystem health predominantly encompassed the Altai Mountains and areas proximal to the Tian Shan Mountains; the low-value regions were concentrated in the Junggar Basin and around the Tarim Basin; and the areas with an improved ecosystem health index accounted for 92.1% of the research zone. Second, natural driving factors dominate the research zone. Dominant drivers vary among regions and are affected by interactions between multiple factors, with positive and negative effects. Third, in the designated study area, regions exhibiting an increase and persistent trend in ecosystem health are projected to constitute 85.05% of the total area. This research is promising for providing decision support and a case for sustainable development in Xinjiang.

Agricultural water resources in Xinjiang, China, face significant supply and demand contradictions. Agricultural water demand risk is a key factor impacting water resource management. This study employs the copula function (CF) and Monte Carlo (MC) methods to evaluate agricultural water demand risk at 66 stations in Xinjiang. The evaluation is based on the marginal distributions of precipitation (PR) and reference evapotranspiration (RET). The findings classify Xinjiang’s precipitation–evapotranspiration relationship into three types: evapotranspiration, precipitation, and transition. Regions south of the Tianshan Mountains (TMs) primarily exhibit evapotranspiration characteristics. The Ili River Valley and areas north of the TMs display precipitation characteristics. Other areas north of the TMs have transitional characteristics. Both annual precipitation and RET in Xinjiang follow the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution. The Frank CF effectively describes the coupling relationship between precipitation and RET, revealing a negative correlation. This negative correlation is stronger north of the TMs and weaker to the south. The agricultural water demand risk in Xinjiang varies significantly across regions, with the precipitation–RET relationship being a crucial influencing factor. The demand index (DI) for agricultural water decreases as the risk probability (RP) increases. The stability of the DI is greatest in evapotranspiration-type regions, followed by transition-type, and weakest in precipitation-type regions. When the RP is constant, the DI decreases in the order of evapotranspiration, transition, and precipitation types. This study quantifies the spatial pattern of agricultural water demand risk in Xinjiang. The advantage of the CF–MC method lies in its ability to assess this risk without needing crop planting structures and its ability to evaluate spatial variations. However, it is less effective in areas with few meteorological stations or short monitoring periods. Future efforts should focus on accurately assessing water demand risk in data-deficient areas. The findings are crucial for guiding the regulation and efficient use of agricultural water resources in Xinjiang.

This study presents a one-step multiplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method for the simultaneous detection of multiple viruses affecting melon crops. Viruses such as Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), Squash mosaic virus (SqMV), Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), Papaya ring spot virus (PRSV), and Melon yellow spot virus (MYSV) pose a great threat to melons. The mixed infection of these viruses is the most common observation in the melon-growing fields. In this study, we surveyed northern Xingjiang (Altay, Changji, Wujiaqu, Urumqi, Turpan, and Hami) and southern Xingjiang (Aksu, Bayingolin, Kashgar, and Hotan) locations in Xinjiang province and developed a one-step multiplex RT-PCR to detect these melon viruses. The detection limits of this multiplex PCR were 103 copies/μL for ZYMV and MYSV and 102 copies/μL for WMV, SqMV, PRSV, CMV, and TMV. The detection results in the field showed 242 samples were infected by one or more viruses. The multiplex RT-PCR protocol demonstrated rapid, simultaneous, and relatively effective detection of viruses such as WMV, CMV, ZYMV, SqMV, TMV, PRSV, and MYSV. The technique is designed to identify these melon viruses in a single reaction, enhancing diagnostic efficiency and reducing costs, thus serving as a reference for muskmelon anti-virus breeding in Xinjiang.

Traditional villages are one of the basic types of rural revitalisation and one of the important carriers of cultural inheritance. This research is based on the data of 53 traditional villages in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region with the aid of the ArcGIS10.8.1 spatial analysis platform. The study identifies the spatial evolution characteristics from the spatial distribution type, distribution direction, distribution density, distribution balance, etc., and explores their influence mechanisms. The study shows that 1. the spatial structure of traditional villages in Xinjiang was analysed as a cohesive structure type by using the nearest neighbour index method, which shows the evolutionary characteristics of the agglomerative tendency to increase gradually. Among them, Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture and Turpan City have the highest degree of concentration. 2. The establishment and development of traditional villages in Xinjiang is mainly influenced by natural factors such as geographical features and hydrography. Social factors such as population distribution, transport conditions and economic progression have very important implications for the preservation and continuation of traditional villages.

The Northern Slope of the Tianshan Mountains (NSTM) is characterized by complex and diverse terrain, which represents a fragile ecological environment. Soil wind erosion is a key factor affecting the natural ecosystem and the social development of the region, but it has not been well understood until now. In this study, the revised wind erosion equation (RWEQ) was employed to display the spatial and temporal characteristics of soil wind erosion in the NSTM from 2000 to 2018. In addition, the main driving factors of wind erosion were analyzed. The results showed that approximately 94.25% of the NSTM experienced soil wind erosion, with a multi-year average actual soil wind erosion modulus of 6556.40 t·km−2·a−1. From 2000 to 2018, the actual soil wind erosion modulus in the NSTM showed a trend of fluctuational increase, with an increase rate of 44.65 t·km−2·a−2, but the area affected by soil wind erosion exhibited a downward trend. The wind erosion rate decreased in 76.38% of the total area, except for some areas such as Hami, with an increasing trend of soil wind erosion. The wind factor in RWEQ showed a significant linear relationship with the soil wind erosion modulus (r = 0.62, p < 0.01). Land use changes also have a critical impact on the soil wind erosion. The results of geographical detectors show that the combined effect of weather factor and vegetation factor can explain more than 60% of the changes in soil wind erosion.

Camels, vital to economies in Asia, Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula, have been domesticated for over 4000 years. They thrive in arid regions like Xinjiang, China, but face challenges from internal and external parasites, particularly gastrointestinal parasites, which impact health, meat and milk quality, and production efficiency. This study investigates the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth infections in camels from five major regions in Xinjiang. We collected 435 fresh fecal samples and used the saturated saline flotation method and McMaster’s method for detection. Molecular examination followed. The overall prevalence was 18.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 14.7–22.2%), with Urumqi showing the highest prevalence (29%, 95% CI: 23.4–35.1%) compared to other regions (odds ratio [OR]: 4.62, 95% CI: 2.63–8.41%). Younger camels (≤3 years old) were more likely infected by the parasites after adjusting for the region differences (OR: 10.53, 5.12–24.65%). However, we found no evidence that the prevalence was different between male and female camels. PCR analysis identified Trichostrongylus spp., Chabertia ovina, and Haemonchus contortus as predominant parasites, with observed co-infections indicating a complex parasitic landscape. The findings provide essential epidemiological data for effective parasite control strategies.

As the core area of human activities and economic development in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, the hilly oasis zone of Xinjiang directly affects the regional sustainable development and stability of the ecosystem. Understanding the effects of different geomorphic types on vegetation distribution is crucial for maintaining vegetation growth and development, especially the improvement in the terrestrial ecological environment in arid areas under the background of climate change. However, there are few studies on the effect of spatial differences in detailed geomorphic types on vegetation distribution patterns. Therefore, this paper divides the Xinjiang hilly oasis zone into six geomorphologic level zones and innovatively investigates the influence of detailed geomorphologic types on the spatial distribution of vegetation and vegetation cover. Further, the area proportion of detailed landform types corresponding to different vegetation coverage in each geomorphic area was quantitatively calculated. Finally, the Geodetector method was used to detect the drivers of interactions between vegetation and the environment. The findings are shown as follows: (1) In the same climate zone, the spatial differentiation of landforms has a great influence on the vegetation distribution, manifesting as the significantly different vegetation distribution in different landform types. Grassland is the main vegetation type in the erosion and denudation of Nakayama; cultivated vegetation and meadows have a larger coverage in the alluvial flood plain and alluvial plain; and the distribution of vegetation in the Tianshan economic zone is characterized by obvious vertical zoning with the geomorphology. (2) The landform type and morphological types are the strongest driving factors for vegetation coverage with q values of 0.433 and 0.295, respectively, which effectually fill the gap caused by only using two terrain indicators, slope and elevation, to study the relationship between landforms and vegetation. (3) In addition, the improved nonlinear interaction resulting from the double factor of landform type and slope is 0.486, which has a stronger control on vegetation coverage than the single factor of landform type. These findings are conducive to enhancing the supply services of vegetation to the ecosystem in arid areas as well as providing important scientific guidance for the construction of ecological civilization and sustainable development in Xinjiang. Soil diversity plays an important role in maintaining ecological balance and ensuring the sustainability of the land. Xinjiang is a typical arid and semi-arid region of China, and the study of Xinjiang soils is significant for understanding soil properties in all such environments. This study applied the moving window technique and the species–area curve model from ecology to establish optimal analysis windows, calculate landscape pattern indices, and reveal soil distribution characteristics in Southern Xinjiang. Additionally, we used geographic detectors to identify the primary influencing factors in different geomorphic regions. The results indicate a positive correlation between soil richness and area in the Southern Xinjiang region. The Tarim Basin, despite being the largest area, shows the lowest diversity and evenness indices. Overall, mountainous areas have higher soil evenness when compared to basins. In terms of natural factors, temperature, precipitation, and topography play a crucial role in the variation of soil diversity in mountainous areas, while parent material has a greater influence in the basin regions. The characteristics of soil diversity vary by region and are influenced by the interactive effects of various natural factors. However, the impact of human activities also requires consideration. The low evenness poses a greater challenge for soil restoration in the basin regions. Soil conservation efforts in arid regions are of paramount importance. The research findings can provide valuable insights for the development of sustainable agriculture, soil conservation, and for addressing climate change challenges in arid regions. The basin ecological compensation can effectively solve the externality issues generated in the process of resources development and utilization, and it is of great significance in promoting the coordinated development of economy-society-ecology in the basin. Based on the evolutionary game theory, this paper analyzed the tripartite dynamic evolution scenarios of the higher government and the upper and lower local governments. Taking the Bosten Lake basin in Xinjiang as the research object, it set up a basin ecological compensation mechanism. The results indicate that only when the fines imposed by the higher government on the defaulting party are higher than the ecological protection costs and compensation fees in the upstream and downstream of the basin, the upstream and downstream can reach a stable equilibrium state of "protection" and "compensation" strategies. Based on the evolution results, the ecological compensation and ecological protection cost of Bosten Lake are 2.64×107 and 2.20×107 Yuan/year. Adopting the "compensation method for key pollution factors exceeding the standard" to determine penalty standards. In the Western world China stands accused of severe human rights violations regarding its treatment of the Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim minorities in its northwestern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. This is the first article to systematically analyze the response of China's international state media to these allegations. By studying the YouTube channels of two leading Chinese state media, China Global Television Network (CGTN) and New China TV (operated by Xinhua News Agency), it presents an in-depth understanding of how China's foreign-facing propaganda works in a crucial case. The quantitative content analysis highlights how China reacted to increasing international (mostly United States) pressure regarding its Xinjiang policies by producing higher volumes of videos and putting out new counternarratives. The qualitative analysis that follows provides in-depth treatment of the most important discourses that Chinese media engage in to salvage the nation's international image, namely those on development, culture, nature, and terrorism. It finds several ways of countering criticism, ranging from presenting a positive image of China, in line with traditional propaganda guidelines and President Xi Jinping's assignment to state media to "tell the China story well," to more innovative approaches. Thus the development narrative becomes more personalized, the discourse on culture supports the "heritagization process" to incorporate minority cultures into a harmonized "Chinese civilization," representations of nature firmly tie Xinjiang into the discourse of "beautiful China," the "terror narrative" strategically employs shocking footage in an attempt to gain international "discourse power," etc. The article provides an up-to-date picture of China's state media strategy on a highly contentious international issue. Situated in China's arid and semi-arid zones, the Xinjiang region heavily relies on groundwater for its freshwater supply. This study utilizes data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission, covering the years 2003 to 2021, to quantitatively evaluate the temporal and spatial changes in groundwater storage anomalies (GWSA) in the Xinjiang region. Furthermore, we incorporate the HydroSHEDS dataset to examine the spatial variations in groundwater storage anomalies across watersheds of varying scales. Based on our findings, the GWSA decreased during the study period at a mean rate of −0.381 mm/month, marked by a consistent trend and notable interannual variability. In addition, significant regional disparities are observed; while groundwater storage in the southeastern watersheds is on an upward trend, a general decline is noted in the northern and central regions. The most pronounced depletion is detected in the northwest, especially in the Ili River basin and along the western slopes of the Tianshan Mountains. These changes are intricately linked to anthropogenic factors, including population growth and escalating water demands. In response, the study advocates for the development and enforcement of more rigorous and scientifically informed groundwater management strategies to promote sustainable water use in Xinjiang. China has implemented a series of ecological protection and restoration projects in Tianshan Mountain and Yili Valley in Xinjiang, which have significantly improved regional vegetation coverage. Vegetation improves soil structure through roots, especially increasing non-capillary porosity, which enhances the precipitation infiltration performance, thus reducing surface runoff, increasing the interception and infiltration of groundwater resources, and enhancing regional water retention capacity of soil. In order to quantitatively study the impact of ecological conservation and restoration (represented by fraction of natural vegetation coverage, FVC) on groundwater storage (GWS), we investigated GWS changes in this region, identified the main factors, and quantified their relative impacts. Here, we combined data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite, GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO), and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) hydrological model from January 2003 to December 2020 and evaluated GWS changes. We used the variable importance in projection and partial least squares regression methods to determine the main influencing factors. We found that (1) before and after 2012, GWS decreased at a rate of 0.80 cm/yr and 0.75 cm/yr (with statistical significance p < 0.01), respectively. (2) Before 2012, the main factors affecting the decrease in GWS were agricultural planting areas, and after 2012, they were temperature, evaporation, and FVC, with relative contributions of 54.72%, 34.59%, and 10.69%, respectively. Przewalski's horse (Equus ferus) is a national protected species in China. It first became extinct in the wild in 1976, and was reintroduced to the Kalamaili National Park (KNP) in Xinjiang, China in 2001. This study aimed to analyze the genetic diversity and structure of the reintroduced population of Przewalski's horse in KNP. Here, we developed and designed microsatellite molecular markers using 48 feces samples and combined this with published genomic data from the species. A preliminary analysis of genetic diversity within the Przewalski's horse population in the KNP was conducted using 16 pairs of simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers with high levels of polymorphism and high stability. A total of 199 alleles were amplified using 16 SSR primer pairs, averaging 12.438 at each locus. In the sample of 48 genomes, the average effective number of alleles detected was 2.695, the average expected heterozygosity was 0.577 and the inbreeding coefficient was 0.232. Twelve loci showed significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium following Bonferroni sequential corrections. Our research finds that the genetic diversity of the Przewalski's horse population in the KNP remains high. This is the first research using newly developed SSR markers to describe the genetic diversity and structure of the reintroduced Przewalski's horse population in KNP, China. Water cycle is important for maintaining the dynamic balance of regional water resources. Here, based on the input–output water circulation flux accounting model, we take Xinjiang as a case area to empirically explore the mechanism of the 'nature‐society‐trade' ternary water cycle. The results show that the water transferred out was much larger than the transferred in in Xinjiang. The scale of water resources development and utilization and the social water cycle fluxes have been constantly expanding, but there was a mismatch between the hydrological system and the socio‐economic system in terms of water resource utilization. From 2007 to 2017, agriculture had always been the department with the largest amount of direct water consumption and virtual water transfer in Xinjiang, which mainly transferred virtual water to the light industry and service sector where the production of final products requires large amounts of agricultural products as raw materials or intermediate products. In Xinjiang, the virtual water transferred outside through trade in products and services was much larger than the virtual water transferred in from other regions, and it was thus always in a state of net virtual water outflow as a whole. In inter‐provincial trade of China, Xinjiang mainly transferred virtual water to areas with abundant water resources, developed economies and dense populations in eastern China. Lastly, we put forward targeted suggestions on the optimal allocation of water resources to promote the sustainable development of Xinjiang and we hope that our study will be instructive for water resources management in other arid inland river basins. This article provides an overview of the politics of education as they affect regions and communities on the periphery of the People's Republic of China. Drawing on the articles in this special issue of Comparative Education, it analyses tensions related to the attempted imposition of Bejing's homogenising and totalising vision of Chineseness across Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and amongst the mainland's migrant underclass. Also considered here are the politics of comparative educational scholarship, as they relate to a widespread failure to engage critically with the diversity and complexity of Chinese societies. Attributable largely to the West's own 'culture wars', this failure betrays much-touted ethical commitments to social justice and anti-'hegemonic' resistance. It is thus a central purpose of this essay – and special issue – to urge educational scholars to interrogate the politics of oppression and injustice in China and elsewhere 'beyond the Western horizon'. China is among the 30 countries with a high burden of tuberculosis (TB) worldwide, and TB remains a public health concern. Kashgar Prefecture in the southern Xinjiang Autonomous Region is considered as one of the highest TB burden regions in China. However, molecular epidemiological studies of Kashgar are lacking. A population-based retrospective study was conducted using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to determine the characteristics of drug resistance and the transmission patterns. A total of 1,668 isolates collected in 2020 were classified into lineages 2 (46.0%), 3 (27.5%), and 4 (26.5%). The drug resistance rates revealed by WGS showed that the top three drugs in terms of the resistance rate were isoniazid (7.4%, 124/1,668), streptomycin (6.0%, 100/1,668), and rifampicin (3.3%, 55/1,668). The rate of rifampicin resistance was 1.8% (23/1,290) in the new cases and 9.4% (32/340) in the previously treated cases. Known resistance mutations were detected more frequently in lineage 2 strains than in lineage 3 or 4 strains, respectively: 18.6% vs. 8.7 or 9%, P < 0.001. The estimated proportion of recent transmissions was 25.9% (432/1,668). Multivariate logistic analyses indicated that sex, age, occupation, lineage, and drug resistance were the risk factors for recent transmission. Despite the low rate of drug resistance, drug-resistant strains had a higher risk of recent transmission than the susceptible strains (adjusted odds ratio, 1.414; 95% CI , 1.023–1.954; P = 0.036). Among all patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), 78.4% (171/218) were attributed to the transmission of DR-TB strains. Our results suggest that drug-resistant strains are more transmissible than susceptible strains and that transmission is the major driving force of the current DR-TB epidemic in Kashgar. To harness the rich solar energy resources in Xinjiang Region of Northwest China, this study tries to address the issue of lack of downward surface shortwave radiation (DSSR) observations and the need to improve the accuracy of satellite retrieval and numerical simulation of DSSR under varied sky and meteorological conditions. (1) A two-layer aerosol model specific to Xinjiang was developed to capture the vertical distributions of aerosols based on multiple data sources including lidar, GPS sounding, ground meteorological observations, and profiles from the ECMWF reanalysis version 5 (ERA5) data. The results show that the ERA5/PBLH (planetary boundary layer height) and ERA5/ALH (aerosol layer height) could be used to establish the two-layer aerosol model and characterize the vertical distribution of aerosols in Xinjiang Region. (2) Using the Santa Barbara Discrete Atmospheric Radiative Transfer (SBDART) model, a localized inverse model of clear-sky DSSR was established. After parameter adjustment and using the optimal combination of input parameters for DSSR simulation together with the two-layer aerosol model, the model-simulated DSSR (DSSRSBD) under clear-sky conditions improved significantly compared to the initial results, with all fitting indices greatly improved. (3) In addition, the study demonstrated that the impact of the two-layer aerosol model on DSSR was more pronounced under dust conditions than clear-sky conditions. (4) Using the localized clear-sky DSSR inversion model and its required parameters, simulations were also conducted to capture the spatiotemporal distribution of DSSR under clear-sky conditions in Xinjiang from 2017 to 2019. The annual average DSSRSBD under clear-sky conditions in Xinjiang during 2017–2019 was 606.78 W m−2, while DSSR from CERES (DSSRCER) under the same conditions was generally higher (703.95 W m−2). (5) It is found that satellite remote sensing products experienced data loss in high-altitude snow areas, where numerical simulation technology could serve as a valuable complement. Based on the NDVI and climate data from 2000 to 2022, this study systematically investigated the spatial and temporal patterns, trend characteristics, and stability of the NDVI in Xinjiang using the one-way linear regression method, Theil–Sen Median trend analysis, the Mann–Kendall significance test, and the coefficient of variation. Meanwhile, the persistence of the NDVI distribution was analyzed by combining the trend results and Hurst index. Finally, partial correlation analysis was used to deeply explore the response mechanisms of interannual and seasonal-scale NDVI and climatic factors in Xinjiang, and the characteristics of multi-year vegetation distribution were comprehensively analyzed with the help of human footprint data. The findings indicate the following: (1) The NDVI of interannual and seasonal vegetation in Xinjiang showed a significant increasing trend during the 23-year period, but the spatial distribution was heterogeneous, and the improvement of the vegetation condition in the southern part of the region was remarkable. (2) The NDVI is relatively stable across the region. Unlike in other regions, in general, it is difficult to maintain the existing trend in NDVI in the study area for a long period of time, and the reverse trend is more persistent. (3) On the interannual scale, both precipitation and temperature are positively correlated with the NDVI, and the influence of temperature (80.94%) is greater than that of precipitation (63.82%). Precipitation was dominantly positively correlated with the NDVI in spring, summer, and the growing season, while it was negatively correlated with it in autumn. Temperature and NDVI were positively correlated, with the greatest influence in the spring. (4) Human activities had the greatest impact on the areas with low vegetation cover and areas with medium–low vegetation cover, and there was a high degree of overlap between the areas where the interannual human footprints and NDVI showed an increasing trend. The percentage of human footprints that significantly correlated with interannual NDVI was 34.79%. Reservoirs are essential hydraulic facilities for water resource allocation in Xinjiang. Since the 1950s, many reservoirs have been constructed for oasis water resource utilization in Xinjiang, enhancing the storage capacity of water resources. There are a few intact and open reservoir archives containing both geolocations and hydraulic attributes, such as the reservoir completion year, which can facilitate our understanding of the correlation between hydraulic engineering and oasis expansion. This paper mapped all the reservoirs of Xinjiang using Sentinel-2 MSI images from 2022. It associated their attributes with the reservoir's extent, such as the capacity, area, complete year, altitude, etc., by consulting historical almanac data to establish a full elemental dataset with both geographic and attribute information. Furthermore, the spatial variability and historical process of the reservoirs were discussed against geomorphic information and oasis evolution. The results showed that 804 reservoirs were mapped cumulatively in Xinjiang up to 2022, and 1960–1980 and 2005–2010 are the rapidly developed periods. The construction history of the reservoirs indicates that reservoirs' locations have the spatial tendency to shift from being in oasis plain areas to mountainous areas, and the newly built reservoirs showed a trend of miniaturization in area and maximization in volume. This article examines the impact of rural origin on higher education access among one ethnic group, the Uyghur, a Muslim minority group who reside mostly in China's northwestern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). The article is based on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with Uyghur university students, graduates, and the faculty who teach them. Since the time of the research, changes in China and in XUAR have impacted education policies, many of which had been developed to provide ethnic minorities in China with better access to higher education. This article discusses some of these policy changes to illustrate that the ways in which policy issues are framed also defines what constitutes the "problem" and thus also constrains the debate. Atmospheric precipitable water vapor (PWV) is a key parameter to study and monitor weather changes. According to the characteristics of complex terrain, harsh climate environment and insufficient water vapor sampling rate in Xinjiang, the accuracy of the PWV data provided by the latest ERA5 and MERRA-2 atmospheric reanalysis data is analyzed, with the PWV (GNSS-PWV) from the data of 11 GNSS stations in Xinjiang in 2018 as the reference value. After verifying the accuracy with the sounding station PWV data, the accuracy of ERA5 and MERRA-2 PWV in Xinjiang is evaluated. The temporal and spatial variation characteristics of the PWV bias (Bias),root mean square error (RMSE) of the two types of analysis data and the diurnal anomaly variation are analyzed. The results show that:(1) The annual mean Bias of ERA5 and MERRA-2 in Xinjiang are -0. 97 and -1. 20 mm. The annual mean RMSE are 1. 81 and 2. 11 mm. The accuracy PWV in the two kinds of analysis is better. ERA5 PWV is slightly more accurate than MERRA-2 PWV. (2) The PWV accuracy of both analysis data has obvious seasonal variation, generally low in summer and high in winter. (3) In terms of the diurnal variation of PWV, the two analysis data show high consistency with GNSS-PWV, indicating better diurnal variation of PWV in Xinjiang. Therefore, the two reanalysis data have high accuracy and stability in the PWV of Xinjiang, and is an important data source to study the water vapor change in Xinjiang. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

【Objective】Study the spatial-temporal characteristics and driving factors of agricultural carbon emissions in Xinjiang, to provide references for promoting green development of agriculture and rural areas and achieving the“dual carbon”goals in the region.【Methods】Using 19 types of carbon sources from plantation, livestock and agricultural energy end-consumption as raw data, the agricultural carbon emissions and carbon emission intensities of Xinjiang from 2007 to 2021 were measured. Using 15 types of carbon sources from plantation and livestock as raw data, the carbon emissions and carbon emission intensities of fourteen prefectures（cities） in Xinjiang in 2010, 2015, and 2020 were measured. The driving factors were analyzed by the LMDI（logarithmic mean divisia index） model. The grey prediction model was used to predict the trend of agricultural carbon emissions development in Xinjiang from 2022 to 2030.【Results】During 2007 to 2021, Xinjiang agricultural carbon emissions had the overall trend of“steady-increasing-decreasing-increasing”, while carbon emission intensities had the overall trend of “decreasing-increasing-decreasing”. In 2010, 2015 and 2020, Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture had the highest total carbon emissions, Karamay had the lowest total carbon emissions, Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture had the highest carbon emission intensities. Bayingol Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture had the lowest carbon emission intensities in 2010. Turpan had the lowest carbon emission intensities in 2015 and 2020. The impacts of driving factors on agricultural carbon emissions were：agricultural economic level effect > agricultural structure effect > agricultural population scale effect > agricultural production efficiency. From 2022 to 2030, the agricultural carbon emissions in Xinjiang were predicted to have an increasing trend while the intensities have a decreasing trend.【Conclusion】From 2007 to 2021, the total agricultural carbon emissions in Xinjiang showed an overall upward trend, while the agricultural carbon emission intensity showed an overall downward trend. Agricultural economic level effect promoted the increase of agricultural carbon emissions, while agricultural structure effect, agricultural population scale effect, and agricultural production efficiency restrained the increase of agricultural carbon emissions. It was predicted that from 2022 to 2030, the agricultural carbon emissions in Xinjiang will increase year by year, while the agricultural carbon emission intensities will decrease year by year.
