Abstract Extracellular vesicles (EVs) mediate cell-to-cell communication by horizontally transferring biological materials from host cells to target cells. During exposure to pathogens, pathogen-associated molecular patterns (e.g., lipopolysaccharide, LPS) get in contact with endothelial cells and stimulate the secretion of endothelial cell-derived EVs (E-EVs). The triggered EVs secretion is known to have a modulating influence on the EVs-receiving cells. Macrophages, a major component of innate immunity, are polarized upon receiving external inflammatory stimuli, in which toll-like receptor4 (TLR4)—nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) pathway plays a key role. However, the functions of LPS-induced E-EVs (ELPS-EVs) in modulating macrophage phenotype and activation remain elusive. We collected the EVs from quiescent endothelial cells (ENor-EVs) and ELPS-EVs to detect their stimulatory role on NR8383 macrophages. Isolated EVs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), western blot assay, and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). NR8383 macrophages were stimulated with ELPS-EVs, ENor-EVs, or PBS for 24 h. Hereafter, the uptake of EVs by the macrophages was investigated. Upon EVs stimulation, cellular viability was determined by MTT assay, while macrophage phenotype was analyzed by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence analysis. Furthermore, a western blot assay was conducted to evaluate the potentially involved TLR4–NFκB pathway. Interestingly, upon exposure to LPS, endothelial cells secreted significantly higher amounts of EVs (i.e., ELPS-EVs) when compared to quiescent cells or cells in PBS. The ELPS-EVs were also better internalized by NR8383 macrophages than ENor-EVs. The cellular viability of ELPS-EVs-treated macrophages was 1.2 times higher than those in the ENor-EVs and PBS groups. In addition, ELPS-EVs modulated NR8383 macrophages towards a proinflammatory macrophage M1-like phenotype. This was indicated by the significantly upregulated expressions of proinflammatory macrophage biomarkers CD86 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) observed in ELPS-EVs-treated macrophages. The TLR4–NFκB signaling pathway was substantially activated in ELPS-EVs-treated macrophages, indicated by the elevated expressions of makers TLR4 and phosphorylated form of nuclear factor kappa B p65 subunit (p-NFκBp65). Overall, our results indicate that E-EVs play a crucial role in macrophage phenotype modulation under inflammatory conditions.

Carotenoids are involved in the formation of plant leaf color as well as photosystem photoprotection. This study showed that blue light significantly induced up-regulation of the total carotenoid content in the inner leaves of orange-head Chinese cabbage (OHCC). Furthermore, the transcriptomic analysis revealed that blue light treatment induced up-regulation of genes in photosynthesis (BrHY5-2, BrCOP1 and BrDET1) and the methylerythritol 4-phosphate pathways (BrGGPS, BrDXS and BrHDR) upstream of the carotenoid metabolic pathway. Carotenoid metabolomic analysis revealed that the accumulation of several orange and red carotenoids (lycopene, zeaxanthin, β-carotene, lutein, and β-cryptoxanthin) after blue light treatment contributed to the deepening of the leaf coloration, suggesting that short-term blue light treatment could be used to boost nutritional quality. The light signal gene BrHY5-2 participated in the blue light-induced transcriptional regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis in OHCC. Overexpression of BrHY5-2 in Arabidopsis significantly increased the total carotenoid content and the sensitivity to blue light. The above findings revealed new insights about blue-light-induced carotenoid synthesis and accumulation in OHCC lines. They suggested a new engineering approach to increase the nutritional value of vegetables.

Abstract Objective: We examined the association between food insecurity and positive childhood experiences (PCE). Design: Outcome measure was number of PCE and seven PCE constructs. Food insecurity was assessed with a three-category measure that ascertained whether the respondent could afford and choose to eat nutritious food. We then used bivariate and multivariable Poisson and logistic regressions to analyse the relationship between food insecurity and the outcome measures. The analyses were further stratified by age (≤ 5, 6–11 and 12–17 years). Setting: The National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) from 2017 to 2020, a nationally representative sample of children and adolescents in the USA. Participants: Parents/caregivers who reported on their children’s experiences of PCE and food insecurity from the 2017–2020 NSCH (n 114 709). Results: Descriptively, 22·13 % of respondents reported mild food insecurity, while 3·45 % of respondents reported moderate to severe food insecurity. On multivariable Poisson regression analyses, there was a lower rate of PCE among children who experienced mild (incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 0·93; 95 % CI 0·92, 0·94) or moderate/severe food insecurity (IRR = 0·84; 95 % CI 0·83, 0·86) compared with those who were food secure. We found an inverse relationship between food insecurity and rate of PCE across all age categories. Conclusions: Our study finding lends evidence to support that interventions, public health programmes, as well as public health policies that reduce food insecurity among children and adolescents may be associated with an increase in PCE. Longitudinal and intervention research are needed to examine the mechanistic relationship between food insecurity and PCE across the life course.

Abstract Background Several studies have provided evidence about adverse pregnancy outcomes of nurses involved in occupational exposure. However, the pregnancy outcomes among nurses in middle-income countries are not well demonstrated. The main aim of this study is to present the prevalence and influencing factors of pregnancy outcomes among female nurses in China. Methods We included 2243 non-nurse health care workers, and 4230 nurses in this national cross-sectional study in China. Information on occupational exposures and pregnancy outcomes was collected using a face-to-face investigation. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated through logistic regression. Results The proportion of threatened abortion, spontaneous abortion, and stillbirth of female nurses was 2.6%, 7%, and 2.1%, respectively. We found an increased risk of threatened abortion among nurses with overtime work (OR = 1.719, 95% CI 1.158–2.550). The risk of threatened abortion and spontaneous abortion was elevated among nurses handling disinfectant (OR = 2.293 and 1.63, respectively). We found a nearly twofold increased risk of premature birth (OR = 2.169, 95% CI 1.36–3.459) among nurses handling anti-cancer drugs. Conclusions Our findings suggested that maternal occupational exposures might be associated with the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes among female nurses in China. We recommend that policy-markers and hospital managers work together to reduce exposure to occupational hazards and improve pregnancy outcomes among female nurses.

Abstract To satisfy the requirements for the precise formation of large-scale high-performance lightweight components with inner ring reinforcement, a new multidirectional loading rotary extrusion forming technology is developed to match the linear motion with the rotary motion and actively increases the strong shear force. Its principle is that the radial force and rotating torque increase when the blank is axially extruded and loaded. Through the synergistic action of axial, radial, and rotating motions, the orderly flow of metal is controlled, and the cumulative severe plastic deformation (SPD) of an “uplift-trowel” micro-area is generated. Consequently, materials are uniformly strengthened and toughened. Simultaneously, through the continuous deformation of a punch “ellipse-circle,” a high reinforcement component is grown on the cylinder wall to achieve the high-quality formation of cylindrical parts or the inner-ring-reinforcement components. Additionally, the effective strain increases with rotation speed, and the maximum intensity on the basal plane decreases as the number of revolutions increase. The punch structure also affects the axial extrusion loading and equivalent plastic strain. Thus, the proposed technology enriches the plastic forming theory and widens the application field of plastic forming. Furthermore, the formed large-scale high-performance inner-ring-stiffened magnesium components have been successfully verified in aerospace equipment, thereby solving the problems of integral forming and severe deformation strengthening and toughening. The developed technology has good prospects for mass production and application.

Abstract Preeclampsia (PE) is a significant threat to all pregnancies that is highly associated with maternal mortality and developmental disorders in infants. However, the etiopathogenesis of this condition remains unclear. This study aims to explore the regulatory roles of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and the mediated competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNA) in the etiopathogenesis of PE through analysis of lncRNA expression patterns in PE and healthy pregnant women (HPW), as well as the construction of lncRNA-mediated ceRNA regulatory networks using bioinformatics. A total of 896 significant differentially expressed lncRNAs, including 586 upregulated lncRNAs and 310 downregulated lncRNAs, were identified in comparison between PE and HPW. Analysis of these differential expressed lncRNAs revealed their predominant enrichment in molecular functions such as sphingosine-1-phosphate phosphatase activity, lipid phosphatase activity, phosphatidate phosphatase activity, thymidylate kinase activity, and UMP kinase activity. Moreover, these differential expressed lncRNAs were predominantly enriched in KEGG analyses such as fat digestion and absorption, lysine degradation, ether lipid metabolism, glycerolipid metabolism, and sphingolipid metabolism. Two ceRNA regulatory networks were constructed based on ceRNA score, including one that had 31 upregulated lncRNAs, 11 downregulated miRNAs, and 34 upregulated mRNAs, while the other contained 128 downregulated lncRNAs, 40 upregulated miRNAs, and 113 downregulated mRNAs. These results may provide a clue to explore the roles of lncRNAs in the etiopathogenesis of PE.

Iron (Fe) deficiency is one of the most common micronutrient imbalances limiting plant growth globally, especially in arid and saline alkali regions due to the decreased availability of Fe in alkaline soils. Malus halliana grows well in arid regions and is tolerant of Fe deficiency. Here, a physiological and metabolomic approach was used to analyze the short-term molecular response of M. halliana roots to Fe deficiency. On the one hand, physiological data show that the root activity first increased and then decreased with the prolongation of the stress time, but the change trend of root pH was just the opposite. The total Fe content decreased gradually, while the effective Fe decreased at 12 h and increased at 3 d. The activity of iron reductase (FCR) increased with the prolongation of stress. On the other hand, a total of 61, 73, and 45 metabolites were identified by GC–MS in three pairs: R12h (Fe deficiency 12 h) vs. R0h (Fe deficiency 0 h), R3d (Fe deficiency 3 d) vs. R0h, and R3d vs. R12h, respectively. Sucrose, as a source of energy, produces monosaccharides such as glucose by hydrolysis, while glucose accumulates significantly at the first (R12h vs. R0h) and third time points (R3d vs. R0h). Carbohydrates (digalacturonate, L-xylitol, ribitol, D-xylulose, glucose, and glycerol) are degraded into pyruvate through glycolysis and pentose phosphate, which participate in the TCA. Glutathione metabolism and the TCA cycle coordinate with each other, actively respond to Fe deficiency stress, and synthesize secondary metabolites at the same time. This study thoroughly examines the metabolite response to plant iron deficiency, highlighting the crucial roles of sugar metabolism, tricarboxylic acid cycle regulation, and glutathione metabolism in the short-term iron deficiency response of apples. It also lays the groundwork for future research on analyzing iron deficiency tolerance.

Background/Objective: The incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) remains significant, with a rising prevalence of HPV-positive (HPV+) cases, underscoring the growing importance of appropriate treatment approaches for this condition. While HPV+ OPC typically exhibits a more favorable prognosis than HPV-negative (HPV−) OPC, certain HPV+ OPC patients still face adverse outcomes. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of TORS versus traditional surgery in treating OPC patients and investigate the prognostic implications of specific variants in the HPV genome. Methods: The clinical information, including pathological features, treatments, and outcomes (death), of 135 OPC patients treated with traditional surgery from 2008 to 2018 (the non-TORS group) and 130 OPC patients treated with TORS from 2017 to 2021 (the TORS group) were obtained from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC). A comparative analysis of 3-year overall survival (OS) was performed between these two groups. Furthermore, we conducted next-generation sequencing for the HPV16 genome of the 68 HPV+ OPC cases to characterize single-nucleotide variations (SNVs) in the HPV16 genome and evaluate its association with HPV+ OPC patient survival. Results: The comparative analysis of 3-year OS between the two groups (TORS vs. non-TORS) revealed a significant prognostic improvement in the TORS group for OPC patients with a T1–T2 classification (89.3% vs. 72.0%; p = 1.1 × 10−2), stages I–II (92.1% vs. 82.2%; p = 4.6 × 10−2), and stages III–IV (82.8% vs. 62.2%; p = 5.7 × 10−2) and for HPV− patients (85.5% vs. 33.3%; p < 1.0 × 10−6). Furthermore, three SNVs (SNV1339A>G, SNV1950A>C, and SNV4298A>G) in the HPV16 genome were identified as being associated with worse survival. These SNVs could alter protein interactions and weaken the binding affinity for MHC-II, promoting viral amplification and immune evasion. Conclusions: TORS exhibited a superior prognosis to traditional surgery in OPC patients. Additionally, identifying specific SNVs within the HPV16 genome provided potential prognostic markers for HPV+ OPC. These significant findings hold clinical relevance for treatment decision-making and prognostic assessment in patients with OPC.

In this study, a novel metal-dielectric film mode filter structure that can flexibly regulate the transverse mode inside vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is proposed. The number, volume, and stability of transverse modes inside the VCSEL can be adjusted according to three key parameters—the oxide aperture, the metal aperture, and the distance between the oxide aperture and the metal aperture—to form a flexible window, and a new parameter is defined to describe the mode identification. This study provides a complete simulation theory basis and calculation method, which is of great significance for the optical mode control in VCSELs.

The study of the intricate flight patterns and behaviors of swarm insects, such as drosophilas, has long been a subject of interest in both the biological and computational realms. Tracking drosophilas is an essential and indispensable method for researching drosophilas’ behaviors. Still, it remains a challenging task due to the highly dynamic nature of these drosophilas and their partial occlusion in multi-target environments. To address these challenges, particularly in environments where multiple targets (drosophilas) interact and overlap, we have developed a long-term Trajectory 3D Position and Orientation Tracking Method (Long 3D-POT) that combines deep learning with particle filtering. Our approach employs a detection model based on an improved Mask-RCNN to accurately detect the position and state of drosophilas from frames, even when they are partially occluded. Following detection, improved particle filtering is used to predict and update the motion of the drosophilas. To further enhance accuracy, we have introduced a prediction module based on the self-attention backbone that predicts the drosophila’s next state and updates the particles’ weights accordingly. Compared with previous methods by Ameni, Cheng, and Wang, our method has demonstrated a higher degree of accuracy and robustness in tracking the long-term trajectories of drosophilas, even those that are partially occluded. Specifically, Ameni employs the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) combined with the Global Nearest Neighbor (GNN) assignment algorithm, primarily designed for tracking larger, more predictable targets like aircraft, which tends to perform poorly with small, fast-moving objects like drosophilas. The method by Cheng then integrates particle filtering with LSTM networks to predict particle weights, enhancing trajectory prediction under kinetic uncertainties. Wang’s approach builds on Cheng’s by incorporating an estimation of the orientation of drosophilas in order to refine tracking further. Compared with those methods, our method performs with higher accuracy on detection, which increases by more than 10% on the F1 Score, and tracks more long-term trajectories, showing stability.

With the emerging large- and medium-sized engineering projects, prominent project delivery methods make sense in terms of cost, risk, management, and schedule. Among these, the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) method stands out due to its adaptability for growing scale and complexity projects. This study compares the IPD method with other methods, emphasizing its benefits in large- and medium-sized projects and introducing the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) model to analyze IPD’s adaptability quantitatively. By conducting a matrix calculation of eighteen second-level indicators, this study derived weight values for four first-level indicators: Cost control, Risk control, Management control, and Schedule control. These first-level indicators were then used to formulate the total evaluation index calculation. Based on this foundation, we verified the calculations using a case study in Fujian. Implementing the IPD method led to a lower cost than the Owner’s Representative method and a one-year schedule acceleration. The FAHP model introduced in this study offers a novel and objective approach for adaptability analysis of the IPD method in large- and medium-sized engineering projects, coupling decision theory into project management.

Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata is distributed in several Asian countries. The larvae and adults often cause substantial economic losses to Solanaceae crops such as potato, tomato, eggplant, and Chinese boxthorn. Even though a chromosome-level genome has been documented, the expression profiles of genes involved in development are not determined. In this study, we constructed embryonic, larval, pupal, and adult transcriptomes, generated a comprehensive RNA-sequencing dataset including ~52 Gb of clean data, and identified 602,773,686 cleaned reads and 33,269 unigenes. A total of 18,192 unigenes were successfully annotated against NCBI nonredundant protein sequences, Swissprot, Eukaryotic Orthologous Groups, Gene Ontology (GO), or Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases. There were 3580, 2040, 5160, 2496, 3008, and 3895 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between adult/egg, egg/larval, larval/pupal, adult/pupal, egg/pupal, and adult/larval samples, respectively. GO and KEGG analyses of the DEGs highlighted several critical pathways associated with specific developing stages. This is the first comprehensive transcriptomic dataset encompassing all developmental stages in H. vigintioctomaculata. Our data may facilitate the exploitation of gene targets for pest control and can serve as a valuable gene resource for future molecular investigations.

Taste, dietary choices, and gut microbiota are often analyzed as major factors of metabolic health. Populations living in cold or hot regions have different dietary habits. This study aims to investigate the potential association among ambient temperature, food taste preferences, and cecal microbiota community profiles in mice. By exposing mice to mixed diets containing sweet, sour, salty, and bitter flavors at low (4 °C) and high (37 °C) ambient temperatures, the taste preferences of mice at both ambient temperatures were in the order of saltiness > sweetness > bitterness > sourness. Exposing mice to sweet, sour, salty, and bitter diets, respectively, revealed that in a low-temperature environment, mice consuming salty (5.00 ± 1.49 g), sweet (4.99 ± 0.35 g), and sour (3.90 ± 0.61 g) diets had significantly higher weight gain compared to those consuming normal feeds (2.34 ± 0.43 g, p < 0.05). Conversely, in a high-temperature environment, no significant changes in body weight were observed among mice consuming different flavored diets (p > 0.05). In a low-temperature environment, mice fed sour and sweet diets showed a significant difference in the gut microbiota composition when compared to those fed a normal diet. A higher abundance of Lachnospiraceae, UBA1819, and Clostridiales was identified as the most significant taxa in the sour group, and a higher abundance of Ruminiclostridium was identified in the sweet group. These differences were associated with microbial pathways involved in carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and energy metabolism. A high-temperature environment exhibited only minor effects on the gut microbiota profile. Overall, our findings provide evidence for temperature-modulated responses to the taste, gut microbiota functions, and body weight changes in mice.

Electrocardiography (ECG) has emerged as a ubiquitous diagnostic tool for the identification and characterization of diverse cardiovascular pathologies. Wearable health monitoring devices, equipped with on-device biomedical artificial intelligence (AI) processors, have revolutionized the acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of ECG data. However, these systems necessitate AI processors that exhibit flexible configuration, facilitate portability, and demonstrate optimal performance in terms of power consumption and latency for the realization of various functionalities. To address these challenges, this study proposes an instruction-driven convolutional neural network (CNN) processor. This processor incorporates three key features: (1) An instruction-driven CNN processor to support versatile ECG-based application. (2) A Processing element (PE) array design that simultaneously considers parallelism and data reuse. (3) An activation unit based on the CORDIC algorithm, supporting both Tanh and Sigmoid computations. The design has been implemented using 110 nm CMOS process technology, occupying a die area of 1.35 mm2 with 12.94 µW power consumption. It has been demonstrated with two typical ECG AI applications, including two-class (i.e., normal/abnormal) classification and five-class classification. The proposed 1-D CNN algorithm performs with a 97.95% accuracy for the two-class classification and 97.9% for the five-class classification, respectively.

In this computational approach, four small novel acceptor molecules of A2-D-A1-D-A2 type have been designed (S1-S4) by the replacement of terminal acceptor groups (A2) of R molecule with four different types of electron accepting-units. The photovoltaic aspects of molecules have been studied by using DFT based method i.e. B3LYP/6–31 G (d, p). The energy level of ground and excited state, bandgap (Egap), excitation energy, transition density matrix (TDM), absorption maxima (λmax), light-harvesting efficiency (LHE), the density of states (DOS), open circuit voltage (VOC) and many other optoelectronic properties of molecules have been investigated in this research. Out of all the newly suggested molecules, S2 has exhibited the highest red-shift in λmax (815 nm), the lowest excitation energy (1.52 eV), small band gap and ionization potential, and the highest oscillator strength (1.97). The VOC of the studied acceptor molecules was calculated with regard to the PTB7-Th donor, and the findings showed that all of the newly suggested molecules displayed a higher VOC and a greater FF than that of R molecule. Consequently, the findings of these calculations show that our computational investigations give profound insights to support a realistic implementation of OSCs with the accepted acceptor molecules examined.

With the awakening of female consciousness, women's participation in sports has gradually gained autonomy and agency. However, Chinese women still face numerous restrictions in combat sports, hindering the development of this industry. Based on years of practice and research experience in the field, we summarize some general and specific issues, such as stigmatization and the constraints of traditional Chinese thinking. These issues need attention and consideration in the pursuit of gender equality in sports in the future.

IntroductionHeterologous grafting has been proven to be a valid approach to improving potato fertility, especially when grafting potatoes with other Solanaceae family plants. However, the mechanisms underlying grafting-induced improvement in potato fertility are still unknown.MethodsIn this study, a poor-fertility potato cultivar “Qingshu No. 9” (Q9) was grafted with a tomato cultivar “Zhongyan988” (ZY988) to study the effects of heterologous grafting in the former. The tuber yield was controlled by different grafting and cultivation approaches, and the correlation between tuber yield and pollen vigor was studied. Comparative transcriptomic analysis of the potential mechanisms of pollen in potato scion fertility changes.ResultGrafting with the tomato rootstock effectively promoted the flower and fruit formation in the scion potato and improved its pollen viability by 15%–20%. In addition, a significant negative correlation was observed between the potato tuber yield and pollen viability, suggesting a potential impact on the metabolic regulatory network related to tuber formation. From the comparative transcriptomic analysis between the pollens from Q9 self-grafted plants and Q9-tomato grafting scion, 513 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. These DEGs were found to be related to gametophyte and pollen development, carbohydrate metabolism, and protein processing. Thus, these DEGs might be involved in improved fertility after reduced tuberization in plants subjected to heterologous grafting.DiscussionPotato/tomato heterologous grafting significantly improved the pollen viability of scion potatoes and was associated with the absence of potato tubers. Heterologous grafting promotes the transcription of genes related to protein processing, carbohydrate metabolism, and pollen development in pollen cells, resulting in the production of fertile pollen. Our results provided initial clues to understanding the improvement of potato fertility using the heterologous grafting method, which might be a useful tool in assisted potato breeding.

Abstract Mechanical forces, including flow shear stress, govern fundamental cellular processes by modulating nucleocytoplasmic transport of transcription factors like Yes‐associated Protein (YAP). However, the underlying mechanical mechanism remains elusive. In this study, it is reported that unidirectional flow induces biphasic YAP transport with initial nuclear import, followed by nuclear export as actin cap formation and nuclear stiffening. Conversely, pathological oscillatory flow induces slight actin cap formation, nuclear softening, and sustained YAP nuclear localization. To elucidate the disparately YAP spatiotemporal distribution, a 3D mechanochemical model is developed, which integrates flow sensing, cytoskeleton organization, nucleus mechanotransduction, and YAP transport. The results unveiled that despite the significant localized nuclear stress imposed by the actin cap, its inherent stiffness counteracts the dispersed contractile stress exerted by conventional fibers on the nuclear membrane. Moreover, alterations in nuclear stiffness synergistically regulate nuclear deformation, thereby governing YAP transport. Furthermore, by expanding the single‐cell model to a collective vertex framework, it is revealed that the irregularities in actin cap formation within individual cells have the potential to induce topological defects and spatially heterogeneous YAP distribution in the cellular monolayer. This work unveils a unified mechanism of flow‐induced nucleocytoplasmic transport, providing a linkage between transcription factor localization and mechanical stimulation.

Virtual reality (VR)-based mindfulness is a promising method to improve the health of older adults. Therefore, many attempts have been made to explore the application of VR-based mindfulness, such as VR meditation and mind–body exercises, in older adults. Generally, current studies indicate the heavy reliance on apparatus for implementing VR-based mindfulness interventions. In VR meditation, the crucial apparatus is VR headsets. In VR mind–body exercises, three essential components are required: motion capture sensors, main consoles, and display screens. In the aspect of health promotion, VR meditation is an effective method for improving mental health, pain, and quality of life in older adults. VR mind–body exercises contribute to increasing the mental health and physical function of older adults. Furthermore, VR mind–body exercises may be combined with other forms of exercise as a mixed method to promote the health of older adults. VR-based mindfulness interventions enhance the meditation and mind–body exercises experience for older adults while improving accessibility. However, their implementation still encounters a series of challenges, such as cost, technical anxiety, and apparatus-related issues. Additionally, we recommend future research to examine the optimal exercise dose for VR mind–body exercises to maximize their health benefits.

Leaf nutrient content (nitrogen, phosphorus) and their stoichiometric ratio (N/P) as key functional traits can reflect plant survival strategies and predict ecosystem productivity responses to environmental changes. Previous research on leaf nutrient traits has primarily focused on the species level with limited spatial scale, making it challenging to quantify the variability and influencing factors of forest leaf nutrient traits on a macro scale. This study, based on field surveys and literature collected from 2005 to 2020 on 384 planted forests and 541 natural forests in China, investigates the differences in leaf nutrient traits between forest types (planted forests, natural forests) and their driving factors. Results show that leaf nutrient traits (leaf nitrogen content (LN), leaf phosphorus content (LP), and leaf N/P ratio) of planted forests are significantly higher than those of natural forests (P< 0.05). The impact of climatic and soil factors on the variability of leaf nutrient traits in planted forests is greater than that in natural forests. With increasing forest age, natural forests significantly increase in leaf nitrogen and phosphorus content, with a significant decrease in N/P ratio (P< 0.05). Climatic factors are key environmental factors dominating the spatial variability of leaf nutrient traits. They not only directly affect leaf nutrient traits of planted and natural forest communities but also indirectly through regulation of soil nutrients and stand factors, with their direct effects being more significant than their indirect effects.

Lithium Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI ie. HQ-115), a polymer electrolyte used in energy applications, has been detected in the environment, yet its health risks and environmental epigenetic effects remain unknown. This study aims to unravel the potential health risks associated with LiTFSI, investigate the role of DNA methylation-induced toxic mechanisms in its effects, and compare its hepatotoxic impact with the well-studied Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA). Using a murine model, six-week-old male CD1 mice were exposed to 10 and 20 mg/kg/day of each chemical for 14 days as 14-day exposure and 1 and 5 mg/kg/day for 30 days as 30-day exposure. Results indicate that PFOA exposure induced significant hepatotoxicity, characterized by liver enlargement, and elevated serum biomarkers. In contrast, LiTFSI exposure showed lower hepatotoxicity, accompanied by mild liver injuries. Despite higher bioaccumulation of PFOA in serum, LiTFSI exhibited a similar range of liver concentrations compared to PFOA. Reduced Representative Bisulfite Sequencing (RRBS) analysis revealed distinct DNA methylation patterns between 14-day and 30-day exposure for the two compounds. Both LiTFSI and PFOA implicated liver inflammatory pathways and lipid metabolism. Transcriptional results showed that differentially methylated regions in both exposures are enriched with cancer/disease-related motifs. Furthermore, Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), a regulator of lipid metabolism, was upregulated in both exposures, with downstream genes indicating potential oxidative damages. Overall, LiTFSI exhibits distinct hepatotoxicity profiles, emphasizing the need for comprehensive assessment of emerging PFAS compounds.

Thermal insulation is crucially important to the safety and reusability of aerospace vehicles. Fabrication of thermal insulation materials with light weight, high mechanical strength and low thermal conductivity remains challenging. In this study, porous polymer derived silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) ceramics with hierarchical structures mimicking cuttlebones were prepared through stereolithography additive manufacturing followed by pyrolysis. The compressive strength of SiOC ceramics with ridges (“R” structures) alongside the sinusoidal walls (“S” structures) (RS-SiOC, 13.37 ± 0.86 MPa for 7-RS-SiOC) mimicking those of cuttlebone was much higher than that of SiOC ceramics with just sinusoidal walls (S–SiOC, 8.43 ± 0.81 MPa), while the density of RS-SiOC with 7 ridges (7-RS-SiOC) and S–SiOC were 0.40 g/cm3 and 0.39 g/cm3, respectively. Our results revealed that the tailored “S” and “R” structures of biomimetic 7-RS-SiOC ceramics, together with the amorphous network of SiOC assembled in the layer-by-layer manner, rendered the high mechanical strength. In addition, the 7-RS-SiOC sample exhibited a low thermal conductivity of 0.12 W/(m·K) at room temperature. The back temperature of the 7-RS-SiOC sample was 179.5 °C when exposed to 800 °C for 1200 s, showing excellent thermal insulation capability. The state-of-the-art biomimetic design of lightweight SiOC ceramics likely offers a solution to high-performance thermal insulation for aerospace vehicles.

The lacustrine level changes affects the sedimentary process of the basin, and has an important influence on the hydrocarbon source-Reservoir assemblage system. In this study, the method of wavelet transform and Fisher plot were used to identify 58 high-frequency cycles on drilling well, with an average cycle thickness of 8.21 m. On this basis, the cumulative offset value was calculated, and finally the lacustrine level changes curve was established during the Triassic period in Lunnan area. The results show that there were three obvious lacustrine level fluctuation cycles in the Triassic period in this area. In the descending stage of lacustrine level, the grain size of the sediments in the study area is large, mainly medium-fine sandstone. In the ascending stage of Lacustrine level, the sediment granularity is small, mainly fine-siltstone and mudstone deposits. Under the control of lacustrine level changes, three sets of “binary structure” lithologic assemblage were deposited in the study area, with large grain size lower and small grain size upper. It is found that the sandstone in the lower part of the “binary structure” has good porosity and permeability. The average porosity of the TⅢ oil formation of Karamay Formation is 15.80 %, and the maximum permeability is 3.785 μm2, which can be used as a good reservoir. The TOC content of the upper part of the “binary structure” is very high, and the average TOC is 3.8 % in Huangshanjie Formation, which is a very good source rock. Therefore, lacustrine level changes in this area has a very important control effect on the on the hydrocarbon source rock and reservoir.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing ceramics based on vat photopolymerization (VPP) have attracted increasing interest in recent years because of their intrinsic properties and a wide range of potential applications. To overcome the drawbacks of traditional printing slurries, such as weak interlayer bonding and high viscosity, a series of organosilicon-grafted silica nanoparticles with a core/shell structure were prepared. These grafted nanoparticles possess small size (around 20 nm), good dispersion in photoactive diluents, and excellent photoactivity. Based on them, organic/inorganic hybrid materials with uniform microstructure and excellent mechanical performance (compressive stress 235.4 ± 33.2 MPa) were obtained by the vat photopolymerization technique. Further, oxide ceramics and carbide/oxide ceramic composites (compressive stress around 15 MPa) were prepared by calcination in air and argon, respectively. This study demonstrates the synthesis of organic/inorganic hybrid silica nanoparticles with good photoactivity, and their promising application as 3D-printable raw materials.

Introduction: Behaviors of swimming rodents are not uniform, exhibiting large variations, which may underlie the individual differences in swimming exercise-induced benefits. The study aimed to monitor individualized swimming behavior and evaluate its biological significance.Methods: A swimming tank which can monitor individualized rodent swimming behavior during exercise was established. A total of 45 mice were subjected to swimming training for 1 month (1 h per day) and the swimming behaviors of each mouse were recorded.Results: The swimming behaviors of mice displayed considerable variations in aspects of distance, velocity, and area preference. For example, nearly one-third of mice preferred to swim in central area and most of the mice exhibited an even area distribution. Long-term exercise training improved cardiac systolic function and decreased blood pressure in mice, but hardly changed swimming behaviors. Analyses of the relationship between swimming behavior and cardiovascular adaptations to exercise training revealed that swimming behavior indicated the biological effects of swimming training. Specifically, mice which preferred swimming at the central zone or were trainable in behavior during 1-month training exhibited better outcomes in cardiac function and blood pressure post long-term exercise. Mechanistically, a centralized swimming behavior indicated a smaller stress during exercise, as evidenced by a milder activation of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis.Discussion: These results suggest that swimming behavior during training indicates individualized adaptations to long-term exercise, and highlight a biological significance of swimming behavior monitoring in animal studies.

Heavy metal toxicity is a significant global health concern, with particular attention given to lead (Pb) exposure due to its adverse effects on cognitive development, especially in children exposed to low concentrations. While Pb neurotoxicity has been extensively studied, the analysis and molecular mechanisms underlying the transgenerational effects of Pb exposure-induced neurotoxicity remain poorly understood. In this study, we utilized Drosophila, a powerful developmental animal model, to investigate this phenomenon. Our findings demonstrated that Pb exposure during the developmental stage had a profound effect on the neurodevelopment of F0 fruit flies. Specifically, we observed a loss of correlation between the terminal motor area and muscle fiber area, along with an increased frequency of the β-lobe midline crossing phenotype in mushroom bodies. Western blot analysis indicated altered expression levels of synaptic vesicle proteins, with a decrease in Synapsin (SYN) and an increase in Bruchpilot (BRP) expression, suggesting changes in synaptic vesicle release sites. These findings were corroborated by electrophysiological data, showing an increase in the amplitude of evoked excitatory junctional potential (EJP) and an increase in the frequency of spontaneous excitatory junctional potential (mEJP) following Pb exposure. Importantly, our results further confirmed that the developmental neurotoxicity resulting from grandparental Pb exposure exhibited a transgenerational effect. The F3 offspring displayed neurodevelopmental defects, synaptic function abnormalities, and repetitive behavior despite lacking direct Pb exposure. Our MeDIP-seq analysis further revealed significant alterations in DNA methylation levels in several neurodevelopmental associated genes (eagle, happyhour, neuroglian, bazooka, and spinophilin) in the F3 offspring exposed to Pb. These findings suggest that DNA methylation modifications may underlie the inheritance of acquired phenotypic traits resulting from environmental Pb exposure.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the leading risk factor for gastric carcinogenesis. Fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 (FGFR4) is a member of transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptors that are activated in cancer. We investigated the role of FGFR4 in regulating the cellular response to H. pylori infection in gastric cancer. High levels of oxidative stress signature and FGFR4 expression were detected in gastric cancer samples. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) demonstrated enrichment of NRF2 signature in samples with high FGFR4 levels. H. pylori infection induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) with a cellular response manifested by an increase in FGFR4 with accumulation and nuclear localization NRF2. Knocking down FGFR4 significantly reduced NRF2 protein and transcription activity levels, leading to higher levels of ROS and DNA damage following H. pylori infection. We confirmed the induction of FGFR4 and NRF2 levels using mouse models following infection with a mouse-adapted H. pylori strain. Pharmacologic inhibition of FGFR4 using H3B-6527, or its knockdown, remarkably reduced the level of NRF2 with a reduction in the size and number of gastric cancer spheroids. Mechanistically, we detected binding between FGFR4 and P62 proteins, competing with NRF2-KEAP1 interaction, allowing NRF2 to escape KEAP1-dependent degradation with subsequent accumulation and translocation to the nucleus. These findings demonstrate a novel functional role of FGFR4 in cellular homeostasis via regulating the NRF2 levels in response to H. pylori infection in gastric carcinogenesis, calling for testing the therapeutic efficacy of FGFR4 inhibitors in gastric cancer models.

The continuous development of the economy and the constant improvement in living standards have led tourists to have higher expectations for the entire travel experience. However, outdated Pingyao lacquerware tourism souvenirs have struggled to attract tourists' attention and cannot better meet their demands. It is worth considering whether analyzing tourists' demands could solve the current issues with lacquerware tourism souvenirs. To address this question, tourists in the Pingyao region were surveyed, and semi-structured interviews and questionnaires as research methods. Initially, semi-structured interviews were conducted with tourists in the Pingyao region to obtain the initial demand indicators for Pingyao lacquerware tourism souvenirs. Based on a literature review and expert summaries, 21 demand indicators were selected for the KANO model questionnaire, and 400 tourists were surveyed using stratified sampling. Data analysis revealed that of the 21 demand indicators evaluated by tourists, 5 as must-be quality, 7 as one-dimensional quality, 5 as attractive quality, and 4 as indifferent quality. The results of this study indicate that the demand attributes evaluated are related to tourists' satisfaction levels, and the lack of these attributes could lead to dissatisfaction with lacquerware tourism souvenirs. Tourists have shown a strong demand for appearance and a desire for functional diversification in lacquerware souvenirs, with higher expectations for regional and commemorative aspects. Due to the uniqueness of lacquerware materials, tourists have highly prioritized safety and environmental friendliness. Combining the KANO model and AHP have better-assisted researchers in identifying the quality types and importance of tourist demands, providing more targeted insights for designing Pingyao lacquerware tourism souvenirs.

Abdominal fat deposition (AFD) in chickens is closely related to the gut microecological balance. In this study, the gut microbiota from high-AFD chickens was transplanted into the same strain of 0-day-old chicks via fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). The FTM from chickens with high AFD had no obvious effects on growth traits, adult body weight, carcass weight, abdominal fat weight, and abdominal fat percentage, but did reduce the coefficient of variation of AFD traits. FMT significantly decreased cecal microbiome richness, changed the microbiota structure, and regulated the biological functions associated with energy metabolism and fat synthesis. Additionally, the cecal metabolite composition and metabolic function of FMT recipient chickens were also significantly altered from those of the controls. Transplantation of high-AFD chicken gut microbiota promoted fatty acid elongation and biosynthesis and reduced the metabolism of vitamins, steroids, and carbohydrates in the cecum. These findings provide insights into the mechanisms by which chicken gut microbiota affect host metabolic profiles and fat deposition.

Previous research has indicated that natural landscapes exhibit a greater capacity for ameliorating negative emotional states in individuals when compared to urban landscapes. Nevertheless, significant scientific inquiries, such as the uniformity of the rejuvenating effect across distinct categories of natural landscapes on college students and the choice of the optimal plant community for achieving the most potent restorative effect, remain unexplored. This study aimed to address these questions by selecting four plant communities (single-layer grassland, single-layer woodland, tree-grass composite woodland, tree-shrub-grass composite woodland) and using an electroencephalography method to capture the neuroelectric activity of the participants in combination with the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule score to explore the effects of plant community types on emotional recovery. The results showed that all four plant communities significantly increased positive emotions and significantly reduced negative emotions. There was no significant difference in the recovery effect of positive emotions among the four plant community types, but there was a significant difference in the recovery effect of negative emotions. The effect of tree-shrub-grass composite woodland on the negative emotion recovery effect is the best; the EEG results found that the alpha wave amplitude induced by the tree-shrub-grass composite woodland was significantly higher than that of the other three groups of plant communities, and the EEG and behavioral results were consistent. The results show that the tree-shrub-grass composite woodland has the best restoration effect and has stronger planning and design significance.

Objectives: Patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) can benefit from individualized targeted therapy. This study aims to develop, compare, analyse prediction models based on dual-energy spectral computed tomography (DESCT) and CT-based radiomic features to non-invasively predict EGFR mutation status in LUAD. Materials and methods: Patients with LUAD (n = 175), including 111 patients with and 64 patients without EGFR mutations, were enrolled in the current study. All patients were randomly divided into a training dataset (122 cases) and validation dataset (53 cases) at a ratio of 7:3. After extracting CT-based radiomic, DESCT and clinical features, we built seven prediction models and a nomogram of the best prediction. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the mean area under the curve (AUC) values were used for comparisons among the models to obtain the best prediction model for predicting EGFR mutations. Results: The best distinguishing ability is the combined model incorporating radiomic, DESCT and clinical features for predicting the EGFR mutation status with an AUC of 0.86 (95 % CI: 0.79–0.92) in the training group and an AUC value of 0.83 (95 % CI: 0.73, 0.96) in the validation group. Conclusions: Our study provides a predictive nomogram non-invasively with a combination of CT-based radiomic, DESCT and clinical features, which can provide image-based biological information for targeted therapy of LUAD with EGFR mutations.

Lacquerware is one of the oldest traditional handicrafts in China. Pingyao lacquer art began in the Spring and Autumn Period, developed better in the Tang Dynasty, and reached its peak in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, when Pingyao lacquerware was exported both at home and abroad with the continuous development of Jin merchant culture. Pingyao lacquer art gained popularity as a handicraft culture of the time. The lacquer decorative ornaments of this period were also influenced by religion and rulers on top of that, forming a fine and rich style characteristic. At the same time, its different themes and painting styles reflect the outlook and spirituality of the local people. This study takes the animal and plant ornamentation of Pingyao lacquerware in the Ming and Qing dynasties as the main object, based on a large number of photographic materials, and systematically analyzes and summarizes the morphological categories and cultural implications of the decorative ornamentation of Pingyao lacquerware through literature and fieldwork, which is an in-depth investigation and study of the animal and plant ornamentation of Pingyao lacquerware, making up for the deficiencies of the existing decorative ornamentation studies, contributing to the inheritance and development of traditional decorative ornamentation, and providing a basis for modern decorative ornamentation design. It is also conducive to the inheritance and development of traditional decorative ornamentation and provides a basis for modern decorative ornament design.

Summary: Realizing camouflage by illusion and cloaking based on the metasurface has received widespread attention recently. However, existing metasurface-based illusion and cloaking devices are valid for the incident wave with a specific frequency, angle, or polarization, or exhibit a single function. Therefore, a terahertz tunable vanadium dioxide (VO2) metasurface carpet cloak is proposed for dynamic illusion and cloaking. Simulation results show that by controlling the state of the VO2, the metasurface carpet cloak can simultaneously achieve illusion and cloaking functions, working at 0.45 THz and 0.6 THz, and is effective for orthogonal circularly polarized waves with different incidence angles. That is the function, frequency, incident angle, and polarization of the metasurface carpet cloak are dynamically adjustable. Besides, the metasurface carpet cloak is robust to the incident angle and is capable of polarization angle stability. This work has potential value in the real-life application of metasurface-based illusion and cloaking devices.
